Voice communications via asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks is currently possible and available. However, voice-over-ATM lacks the efficiency that can convince carriers to invest in ATM technology. In addition, currently available technology cannot provide substantial cost savings in spite of the demand for voice and data traffic to be consolidated on ATM. However, ATM may still become the leading networking technology across entire public networks in the distant future.
