Introduction Adenoid hypertrophy is a change in adenoid size that can lead to obstruction the Eustachian tube and become a risk factor for otitis media effusion (OME) in children. Standard objective examination of adenoid hypertrophy uses adenoid-nasopharyngeal ratio (A-N ratio) based on correct lateral skull radiography. Adenoid hypertrophy is one of the factors causing OME in children. There is still much debate about the association between A-N ratio and tympanogram width (Tw). Determining the association of A-N ratio and Tw in adenoid hypertrophy patients. Methods Participants performed a true lateral radiographic examination using Fujioka method to determine A-N ratio, and Tw to determine middle-ear pressure. The distance between examination of A-N ratio and tympanogram examination was at maximum of ~1 week. The association between A-N ratio and Tw in patients with adenoid hypertrophy used the Pearson correlation test. This research employed significance level p < 0.05. Results Most participants were aged between 6 and 10 years (38.10%), male patients (57.14%), and the symptom most participants complained of was snoring during sleep (38.10%). Most participants had A-N ratio of 0.53 to 0.70 (61.90%) with an average of 0.60 ± 0.05. The average value of Tw measurement was 102.83 ± 50.03 daPa (r = 0.605; p < 0.001). Conclusion There is a significant association between A-N ratio base on true lateral radiographic examination and Tw in adenoid hypertrophy patients.

Background: Primary parotid non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) is a very rare case. Case presentation: A66-year-old Indonesian male with a complaint of a lump in front of the right ear about 1 year with a history ofpostoperative primary parotid NHL 3 years ago. Patients underwent Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB)examination, showing a distribution of lymphoid cells with a diverse population (benign lymphoepitheliallesion / BLL) different from the results of FNAB 3 years ago. The patient underwent a right superficialparotidectomy, and the results of the histopathological examination revealed mature lymphocyte cells mixedwith histiocytes, forming foci of the follicle in part with an active germinal center. Conclusion: NHL reportsare necessary to minimize misdiagnosis between primary parotid NHL and BLL.

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignancy derived from lymphoepithelial tissue andnasopharyngeal epithelial cells. The response therapy of NPC evaluated from histopathological type, but insome patients with the same type was illustrated a different response of therapy. IL-10 expression expects topredict a better response therapy of NPC. IL-10 expression by immunohistochemical examination associatedwith the differentiation of tumors.Method: The study was analytic observational with the cross-sectional approach. Samples were collectedby consecutive sampling and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens were obtained.Result: The result of IL-10 expression in Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients with histopathologicalWorld health organization (WHO) type I was obtained; From all the samples, there were 36.36% of strongpositive expression and 63.64% of frail positive expression. There were increases in the number of cells thatgive a strong expression on WHO type III. Statistical analysis using Fisher’s exact test was obtained p =0.040 with a contingency coefficient of 0.384.Conclusion: There was a moderate correlation between IL-10 expression and histopathological type in NPCpatients.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is ranked 6th of malignant tumors in Indonesia. To analyze the correlation of dose and duration of cisplatin exposure with cytotoxic effects on nasopharyngeal carcinoma stem cells. The biopsy NPC tissue was cultured and processed to obtain NPC stem cells to be treated with cisplatin different doses and durations (24 and 48 h). The number of dead cells after exposure will be calculated using a hemocytometer. Death stem cell density of NPC at exposure of 2 μg/ml cisplatin dose was 81.37%, while the smallest death cell density a dose of 0.05 μg/ml after a 72-h observation was 21.3%. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common head and neck malignancy in Indonesia. Overall, it ranks fourth in males and sixth in females as the most prevalent type of cancer in that country. The data show that in the year 2011, NPC incidence was considered to be intermediate (6.2/100,000 population per year). Through histopathologic examination, about 70 to 80% of these cases were found to be type III according to the WHO classificaton. NPC carries an excellent prognosis if treated early, but most patients presented with stage III to IV disease, which negatively affected the cure rate and increased the mortality rate. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) IgA serology has been established as an effective marker for NPC. Therefore, biologic markers, DNA, and/or antibody-based diagnosis is needed to decrease NPC cases. A screening program needs to be developed that will identify people at high risk of NPC and those who are in the early stage of the disease. In this study, 20 samples were collected from post-therapy patients. An otolaryngologic examination, histopathology of nasopharyngeal tissue, and blood testing for serologic markers were performed. IgA anti-EBNA1 + VCA-p18 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed positive impact as a tool for confirming the diagnosis of NPC, but it still has to be combined with other specific diagnostic tools for post-therapy monitoring and for determining prognosis.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) awareness programme on the short-term and long-term improvement of knowledge and referral of patients with NPC by primary healthcare centres (PHCCs) staff in Indonesia. Design: The NPC awareness programme consisted of 12 symposia including a Train-The-Trainer component, containing lectures about early symptoms and risk factors of NPC, practical examination and the referral system for NPC suspects. Before and after training participants completed a questionnaire. The Indonesian Doctors Association accredited all activities. Participants: 1 representative general practitioner (GP) from each PHCC attended an NPC awareness symposium. On the basis of the Train-The-Trainer principle, GPs received training material and were obligated to train their colleagues in the PHCC. Results: 703 GPs attended the symposia and trained 1349 staff members: 314 other GPs, 685 nurses and 350 midwives.
