BACKGROUND Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy is important for the prevention of sudden cardiac death, but data on clinical outcomes of ICD therapy in Asian pediatric patients are scarce. The aim of this Korean multicenter study was to evaluate the current state and elucidate the clinical outcomes of ICD therapy in children.Methods and Results:Data from 5 pediatric cardiology centers were retrospectively collected from 2007 to 2019. Altogether, 99 patients were enrolled (mean age 13.9±4.1 years). The most common underlying disease was a primary electrical disease (56%). An ICD was implanted for primary prevention in 19%. Appropriate shock occurred in 44% of patients at a median of 1.6 years after implantation. There was no significant difference in the appropriate shock rate between patients with primary and secondary prevention indications (32% vs. 48%, respectively). A total of 33 patients (33%) experienced inappropriate shock, which was associated with primary electrical disease and follow-up duration on multivariate analysis. 17% of patients had ICD-related complications. CONCLUSIONS The utilization rate of ICD for primary prevention was still low in the pediatric population in Korea, but there was a substantial rate of appropriate shock in these patients. Efforts to increase ICD usage to save the lives of high-risk patients and reduce the incidence of inappropriate shock are required.

Background: Infracardiac obstructive total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR) has a poor outcome following surgical correction. We compared the surgical outcomes of obstructive TAPVR between non-infracardiac and infracardiac types. Methods: Among 51 patients who underwent surgical repair for obstructive TAPVR, 23 with infracardiac type and 28 with non-infracardiac type were included in this investigation. The study compared the immediate postoperative courses in the intensive care unit and long-term mortality and pulmonary vein stenosis. The risk factors for long-term survival in obstructive TAPVR also were investigated. Results: The postoperative follow-up period was 79.8 ± 81.5 months. Immediate major operative complications were observed in 22 patients (43.1%); 10 patients (19.6%) died, and eight patients (15.7%) experienced pulmonary vein stenosis during the follow-up period. The Kaplan-Meier curve showed better cumulative survival in patients with infracardiac TAPVR (P = 0.308). The significant factors for survival after surgical repair of obstructive TAPVR did not include anatomical type but instead were postoperative course of ventilator care and lengths of intensive care unit and hospital stays. Conclusion: Patients with non-infracardiac TAPVR with obstruction had a longer postoperative course and experienced more complications. Their survival rate was poorer, and postoperative pulmonary vein stenosis was more frequent in those patients compared with infracardiac TAPVR patients. However, a large-scale study is mandatory to gather more data and confirm our findings.

Little research has explicitly considered the influence of retailer-provided sustainability disclosure at points of purchase for brands within specific product categories. Thus, this paper examines the conditions wherein sustainability labels with scale ratings assist consumers in determining the sustainability performance of products. Study 1 findings demonstrate that, when concerned with social desirability, consumers' product evaluations are greater for products with high (vs. low) sustainability levels. When not concerned with social desirability, this pattern exists so long as the levels are consistent with category-based expectations. Extending these findings, Study 2 results show that evaluations and purchase-related outcomes are greater for products with high levels within (vs. outside) expectations for low-efficacy consumers not concerned with social desirability. Yet, these effects are mitigated for low-efficacy consumers concerned with social desirability. Further, Study 3 suggests that the effect is attenuated for low-efficacy consumers at low levels and for high-efficacy consumers irrespective of sustainability level.

The wide array of sustainability labels used in retail environments across the globe is staggering. One source indicates that there are currently 463 labels used in 199 countries across 25 industries and the number of labels used is anticipated to grow (Ecolabel Index 2018). Despite this widespread labeling, however, consumers still express confusion over the green attributes of products, suggesting that the information presented on these product labels is frequently insufficient and that this may be a contributing factor to unsustainable choices (Frazier 2007).

Background Current cardiorespiratory monitoring equipment can cause injuries and infections in neonates with fragile skin. Impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar was recently demonstrated to be an effective contactless vital sign monitor in adults. The purpose of this study was to assess heart rates (HRs) and respiratory rates (RRs) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) using IR-UWB radar and to evaluate its accuracy and reliability compared to conventional electrocardiography (ECG)/impedance pneumography (IPG). Methods The HR and RR were recorded in 34 neonates between 3 and 72 days of age during minimal movement (51 measurements in total) using IR-UWB radar (HRRd, RRRd) and ECG/IPG (HRECG, RRIPG) simultaneously. The radar signals were processed in real time using algorithms for neonates. Radar and ECG/IPG measurements were compared using concordance correlation coefficients (CCCs) and Bland-Altman plots. Results From the 34 neonates, 12,530 HR samples and 3,504 RR samples were measured. Both the HR and RR measured using the two methods were highly concordant when the neonates had minimal movements (CCC = 0.95 between the RRRd and RRIPG, CCC = 0.97 between the HRRd and HRECG). In the Bland-Altman plot, the mean biases were 0.17 breaths/min (95% limit of agreement [LOA] -7.0–7.3) between the RRRd and RRIPG and -0.23 bpm (95% LOA -5.3–4.8) between the HRRd and HRECG. Moreover, the agreement for the HR and RR measurements between the two modalities was consistently high regardless of neonate weight. Conclusions A cardiorespiratory monitor using IR-UWB radar may provide accurate non-contact HR and RR estimates without wires and electrodes for neonates in the NICU.

The environmental conscientiousness food trend is only expected to increase as consumers demand more information on the environmental and social impacts of their food purchases. Drawing from consumers' lay theories and the match-up hypothesis, this study examines the influence of the interaction between healthiness and sustainability levels on consumer product evaluations. In particular, it argues that the fit between healthiness and sustainability (both high or both low) drives consumer buying preferences as well as product perceptions. However, a general skepticism in sustainability claims moderates this effect.

In today's retail marketplace, consumers receive little or no consistent brand‐level sustainability information, but this may change in the near future. Developing hypotheses based on the comparative brand processing and information disclosure literatures, we conduct a retail laboratory choice‐based experiment to test predictions related to the effects of brand‐level sustainability information on choices, product evaluations, and retailer perceptions. Compared to the status quo condition in which no sustainability information is provided for the product category at the retail point of purchase, the addition of positive (negative) sustainability information for the brand yields higher (lower) product evaluations and increased (decreased) brand choice. In addition, due to greenwashing concerns, many consumers may be skeptical of product‐level sustainability information, and we address the moderating role of this skepticism on retailer‐related perceptions.

The role of employee’s emotions are examined as influencers of job satisfaction, affective organizational commitment, and turnover intentions within a frontline employee context. Using a sample of 126 retail employees, structural equation modeling is used to test the theoretically developed model. Findings suggest that deep acting emotions and emotional exhaustion significantly impact job satisfaction, whereas both deep acting emotions and job satisfaction predict affective organizational commitment. When predicting turnover intentions, surface and deep acting emotions, along with emotional exhaustion, each significantly impact turnover intentions; however, neither job satisfaction nor affective organizational commitment are significant predictors.

Background and Hypothesis: Studies have shown African American patients are more likely to prefer aggressive life-sustaining treatments such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at end-of-life compared to non-Hispanic White patients. Given prior racial disparities in healthcare, low trust has been proposed to explain these preferences. We examined factors that influence surrogate decision makers’ preference for Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) status for hospitalized older adults who cannot make their own medical decisions. We explored whether race is associated with surrogate preference for DNR status for a hospitalized older adult. We also examine if race is associated with distrust and if the race/code status relationship is partially explained (mediated) by distrust in the healthcare system. Experimental Design or Project Methods: Analyses were conducted using data from an observational study of patient/surrogate dyads admitted to an ICU in a Midwest metropolitan area. Distrust was assessed using the Revised Health Care System Distrust Scale. A single item asked the surrogate which status they thought was best for the patient, full code or DNR. Results: In bivariate analysis, higher proportion of African American surrogates showed preference for full code (62.4% vs 37.6%, p=0.0001). After adjusting for trust and sociodemographic and psychological covariates, race was still significantly associated with DNR preference (aOR = 1.92; 95% CI: 1.04, 3.55; p=0.0382). Surrogate race did not show significant association with distrust in bivariate or multivariable analysis, which adjusted for sociodemographic and psychological covariates (p=0.3867). Conclusion and Potential Impact: Contrary to previous studies, we observed no association between surrogate race and distrust of the health care system. Differences in code status preference may be due to other factors related to race and culture. In order to ensure patients are receiving end-of-life care that is consistent with their values, more work is needed to understand the cultural complexities behind end-of-life care preference.

The heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) in newborns are influenced by clinical and pathological conditions such as gestational and postnatal ages, status of sleep, neonatal infections, seizure, and other variables. Using an impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar system, we assessed the HR and analyzed the HRV successfully in both time and frequency domain on a neonate, compared to conventional electrocardiogram (ECG). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study analyzing the HR and HRV in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting using non-contact IR-UWB radar.

The authors propose that mindfulness is an antidote to mindless consumption, which adversely affects individual and collective well-being. The concept of mindfulness is explained and applied to the consumption context. More specifically, the authors examine mindful consumption as an ongoing practice of bringing attention, with acceptance, to inner and outer stimuli, and the effects of this practice on the consumption process. The transformative potential of mindful consumption is reviewed across domains of consumer, societal, and environmental well-being, with suggestions for future research. The article highlights some of the challenges to realizing the transformative potential of mindful consumption and concludes with suggestions for the actions that consumers, institutions, and policy makers could take to promote mindful consumption.

The 2012 presidential election reached new heights in dollars spent and the rancorous nature of advertisements emanating from candidates and other interested parties. While ‘going negative’ has become a well-known tactic in political campaigns, several observers believe that the level of acrimony crossed the line between civil discourse essential to democratic societies and uncivil haranguing that has little to do with election issues. To explore the nuances of this topic, we open with a discussion of limited cross-disciplinary research on incivility in political discourse so that its essential nature is exposed, differentiating it from more common uses of negativity. Our empirical work examined about 350 television advertisements that were shown between the presidential debates of 2012 and the November elections. Levels of civility and incivility are noted and implications for the future of political advertising are provided.

Circulating neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is associated with obesity-related metabolic disorders. This study investigated the relationship between serum NGAL and early alteration of metabolic parameters in non-diabetic Korean women, particularly with respect to saturated fat (SFA) intake. Anthropometric parameters, fasting glycemic status, and levels of lipids, oxidative stress/inflammatory markers, and NGAL were measured in 82 non-diabetic Korean women [Super-healthy group (n=57) with 0 metabolic syndrome risk factor (MetS RF) and MetS-risk group (n=25) with MetS RF≥1]. Age, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting glucose, HbA1C, triglyceride, LDL and total-cholesterol, and NGAL levels were higher, and HDL-cholesterol was lower in the MetS-risk group than in the Super-healthy group. Age-adjusted serum NGAL levels were higher in the MetS-risk group than in the Super-healthy group. NGAL increased proportionally with increase in MetS RFs (p=0.038) and correlated positively with BMI, triglycerides, LDL- and total-cholesterol, interleukin-6, white blood cell count, and neutrophil%, and negatively with HDL-cholesterol and superoxide dismutase activity. Serum NGAL levels positively correlated with SFA intake before and after adjustment (age and BMI). Consumers’ conversations about their consumption experiences in the online environment or electronic word of mouth (e-WOM hereafter) has attracted much attention from academics and marketers. Despite its significance, a critical research gap concerns our limited knowledge of the differences between those who act as active participants (or Posters) and those who act as passive readers (or Lurkers) in the context of online consumer reviews.

In recent years, there has been considerable attention surrounding the topic of front-of-package (FOP) nutrition information disclosures. FOP nutrition disclosures are typically used to provide nutrient information that may help consumers more easily determine if a particular food is a healthy option. The current research compares four different types of FOP formats to assess consumer response. Results from two studies suggest that all FOP disclosure formats tested produce significantly more positive consumer responses than packages without any FOP nutrition information at all. Study 1 finds that levels of consumer nutrition knowledge moderate the FOP-ease of use relationship, while Study 2 reveals that an educational prime also moderates this same relationship. Additional exploratory thought analysis indicates that packages with FOP disclosures generally produce more nutrition-related thoughts than packages without any FOP nutrition information. Our results offer implications for both industry and government regulation, and generate several fruitful areas for future research.

The sustainability labeling on the front of a package featured in a print advertisement may influence consumers’ product evaluations and purchase decisions. The findings of this exploratory study suggest that consumers seem to evaluate the sustainability claim more favorably if the advertisement highlights the personal impact on them. Moreover, environmental involvement appears to further moderate the effects of sustainability claims and environmental impact framing. The interactions that emerged in this study suggest that sustainability labeling effects constitute a complex phenomenon that warrants future research.

An analysis of consumers' Weblogs and two experiments address: (1) the differences in evaluations of menu items when consumers are versus are not provided with meal calorie information, and (2) their perception of calorie levels of different types of meals. Consumers provided their calorie estimates for specific meals offered by four different fast food restaurants, and an experiment assessed effects on consumer evaluations for calorie disclosures for actual items from two of these restaurants. Results show the complex relationship between consumer perceptions regarding the restaurants, the meals and the food items that can influence consumers' calorie estimates and evaluations of meals in restaurants. ********** Given the extensive health-related risks associated with being overweight or obese, a multifaceted approach to reduce their increasing prevalence has been suggested (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2009). Although policymakers and consumer advocates have addressed this critical health issue from a number of different perspectives, the relationship between rising obesity rates and the increased level of away-from-home food consumption has generated a particularly high level of interest. In the last 30 years, the percentage of money spent on food purchases outside the home has risen to 25% and now accounts for nearly one-half of Americans' total yearly food expenditures (ERS/USDA 2009; NRA 2009). Consumers now spend almost $600 billion annually at fast food and table-service restaurants (NRA 2009). The fast food industry, in particular, has been frequently criticized for contributing to the national obesity problem by selling foods high in calories, saturated fat and sodium, often in relatively large portions (Bates et al. 2009; Binkley 2006; Wansink and Chandon 2006). A documentary film, "Super Size Me" by Morgan Spurlock, was nominated for an Academy Award and brought considerable national attention to the public about the relationship between fast food choices and increases in bodyweight and diet-related health problems. In addition, significant relationships have been found between the frequency of fast food restaurant visits and increases in bodyweight and insulin resistance, the two primary risk factors for type 2 diabetes (Pereira et al. 2005). Although the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) required standardized nutrition labels on most packaged food products, food prepared for immediate consumption has been exempt from this legislation. (However, the NLEA has required that relevant calorie and nutrient information be made available when a nutritional claim is made for a menu item.) Recent calorie disclosure mandates for restaurant chains have been passed or implemented in New York City, Seattle, Philadelphia, Maine, Massachusetts, Oregon and California. More importantly, the US health care reform legislation signed into law on March 23, 2010, will require calorie labeling on menus, menu boards and drive through windows for all restaurant chains with twenty or more outlets nationally. The Food and Drug administration was given 1 year from the date of signing of the legislation to propose specific guidelines for the national labeling of restaurant items. A key presumption of these legislative initiatives is that a change in nutrition information on menus in restaurants will be associated with changes in consumer choice at the point-of-purchase. Specifically, increasing consumer awareness of the calorie levels of the less healthful food items, which are typically underestimated, may result in more accurate product evaluations and, in turn, healthier choices. Although there have been a myriad of recent studies examining the potential effects of labeling using different methodologies and outcome variables (Bassett Mary et al. 2008; Burton et al. 2006; Chandon and Wansink 2007a, 2007b; Elbel et al. 2009; Harnack et al. 2008, Hassan, Shiu, and Michaelidou 2010), results have been mixed. …

Because of the negative aspects of smoking, the US National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse has recommended that university campuses should be smoke free. The purpose of this research was to learn students' opinions about the effectiveness of a smoking policy on campus. The policy simply stated there should be no smoking within 30 feet of a building. However, no areas were designated as smoking areas. Using phenomenological inquiry, the authors observed and interviewed both smoking and non-smoking students. Findings suggest that the existing smoking policy was weak and often ignored. Students felt the purpose of the smoking policy should be clearly stated because they were not sure if the policy was intended to make smokers quit or prevent them from smoking in front of doors. This study demonstrates the utility of careful observation as a prelude to the design and implementation of qualitative data collection methods. The results indicate observation is a valuable part of a qualitative research strategy.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the noise level and source, reduce the subway line II noise. As a result of measurement of subway line II in Busan the highest value section of uproad line was from Jigegol to Motgol by 89 dB(A). The sections of conversation and listening interference(over 80 dB(A)) were 21 sections(55%) of 38 sections. Among these sections, 15 sections(71%) were produced rolling noise, 3 sections(14%) squeal noise, 2 sections(10%) braking noise and 1 section(5%) fan noise, and then a main noise source was the rolling noise. In case of downroad line, the highest value section was from Busan Metro Art Museum to Centum city, Motgol to Jigegol by 88 dB(A). The sections of conversation and listening interference(over 80 dB(A)) were 18 sections(47%) of 38 sections. Among these sections, 15 sections(83%) produced rolling noise, 2 sections(11%) squeal noise and 1 section(6%) braking noise were investigated in this study. and then a main noise source was the rolling noise.

There has been growing concern about the role of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in the development of obesity. This study investigated factors associated with SSB intake among Korean children (7-12 years) and adolescents (13-18 years). We examined associations between SSB intake and demographic and dietary factors using nationally representative data from the 2008-2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and 3,179 children and 2,242 adolescents were included in the final analysis. We calculated adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for factors associated with high SSB intake (≥ 300 ml/day) by multivariable logistic regression. The mean daily SSB intake of school children was 98.7 ml/day, with a mean of 64.7 ml/day for those aged 7-12 years and 120.2 ml/day for those aged 13-18 years. SSB intake of ≥ 300 ml/day was found in 12.0% of the children and adolescents. Factors associated with a greater OR for high SSB intake were high energy intake (≥ 125% of EER; OR = 3.17 for boys aged 7-12 years, OR = 2.74 for girls aged 7-12 years, OR = 3.0 for girls aged 13-18 years), low milk consumption (< 1 cup/day; OR = 1.93 for boys aged 7-12 years; OR = 2.53 for girls aged 7-12 years; OR = 1.83 for boys aged 13-18 years), and not meeting the recommended fruit and vegetable intake (< 400 g/day; OR = 1.71 for boys aged 7-12 years). Being overweight and obese was significantly associated with greater ORs for high SSB intake among boys aged 7-12 years (OR = 1.72). These findings may be used to develop targeted education programs for reducing SSB intake and encouraging healthier food choices.

Background Influenza viruses have been associated with various neurological and muscular symptoms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pediatric neurological and muscular manifestations of influenza B during a 5-month epidemic at a single center. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 355 pediatric patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza B infection. Results Neurological and muscular symptoms were exhibited by 28 patients (7.9%). The mean age was 48.7 ± 25.2 months. The mean time between respiratory symptoms and neurological symptoms was 2.2 ± 1.5 days. The most common symptom was seizure (19/28, 67.9%), followed by myositis (5/28, 17.9%), increased intracerebral pressure (1/28, 3.6%), delirium (1/28, 3.6%), and severe headache (1/28, 3.6%). There was one severe case of meningitis with myocarditis (1/28, 3.6%). All seizures were febrile: 15 simple febrile seizures (78.9%), three complex febrile seizures (15.8%), and one febrile status epilepticus (5.3%). The mean age of nine patients with their first seizures was 37.9 ± 22.2 months, which was older than the typical age of onset for febrile seizure. All the patients, except one, were treated with oseltamivir. There were no deaths or chronic debilitating sequelae. Conclusions The neurological and muscular complications of influenza B infection in children are relatively mild, and febrile seizure is the most common. However, clinicians should be alert to the possibility of rare severe complications during influenza B outbreaks.

In mask fabrication, e-beam exposure equipment malfunctioning could produce erroneous masks, several consecutive mask failures in the worst case. This type of error might unexpectedly increase mask turnaround time. Due to high cost of mask fabrication and its annual growth, it is critical detecting those errors as early as possible. Since mask SEM images at after-development inspection (ADI) phase have more visible noise, edges might be hard to detect clearly using classical edge detection algorithms. In this context, we present a novel pattern error detecting algorithm to capture pattern errors in mask monitoring patterns by inspecting mask SEM images at ADI phase. The originality of this paper lies in its use of simple but powerful techniques in a series used for automated error detection. More specifically, we inspect two specific types of errors in SEM images of monitoring patterns: bridging errors in a chessboard pattern, and CD uniformity errors in a line-and-space pattern. For a chessboard pattern, we utilize both horizontal and vertical projections of image intensity histogram to find areas for inspection automatically. From one dimensional projection of the image, we identify spatial coordinates of our interests, and define a small rectangular region, called D-region. For each D-region, we determine whether a pattern bridge is likely to occur, based on the ratio of brighter pixels in it. For a line-and-space pattern, we compute base lines for CD measurement, and detect CD uniformity errors or line shift errors by applying similar one dimensional histogram analysis and CD-computation algorithm to the image. Our experimental results using real pattern images and programmed defect images support that this technique is effective and robust in detecting errors without layout data or another SEM image for comparison.

This study aimed to investigate if glycated hemoglobin (HgbA1C) as compared to fasting blood glucose is better for reflecting cardiometabolic risk in non-diabetic Korean women. Fasting glucose, HgbA1C and lipid profiles were measured in non-diabetic women without disease (n = 91). The relationships of fasting glucose or HgbA1C with anthropometric parameters, lipid profiles, and liver and kidney functions were analyzed. Both fasting glucose and HgbA1C were negatively correlated with HDL-cholesterol (r = -0.287, p = 0.006; r = -0.261, p = 0.012), and positively correlated with age (r = 0.202, p = 0.008; r = 0.221, p = 0.035), waist circumference (r = 0.296, p = 0.005; r = 0.304, p = 0.004), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (r = 0.206, p = 0.050; r = 0.225, p = 0.032), aspartate transaminase (AST) (r = 0.237, p = 0.024; r = 0.368, p < 0.0001), alanine transaminase (ALT) (r = 0.296, p = 0.004; r = 0.356, p = 0.001), lipid profiles including triglyceride (r = 0.372, p < 0.001; r = 0.208, p = 0.008), LDL-cholesterol (r = 0.315, p = 0.002; r = 0.373, p < 0.0001) and total cholesterol (r = 0.310, p = 0.003; r = 0.284, p = 0.006). When adjusted for age and body mass index, significant relationships of DBP (r = 0.190, p = 0.049), AST (r = 0.262, p = 0.018), ALT (r = 0.277, p = 0.012), and HDL-cholesterol (r = -0.202, p = 0.049) with HgbA1C were still retained, but those with fasting glucose disappeared. In addition, the adjusted relationships of LDL-cholesterol and total cholesterol with HgbA1C were much greater than those with fasting glucose. These results suggest that glycated hemoglobin may be a better predictor than fasting glucose for cardiometabolic risk in non-diabetic Korean women.

A comparison is made of several bandwidth sampling methods, including the recently proposed multi-order sampling method, in terms of envelope detection capability of RF signals, using experimental data. The quadrature sampling and second-order sampling methods among them are chosen, and the performance comparison results of the three methods are presented. The resultant image of second-order sampling method introduced too much error that manifested itself as annoying brightness fluctuations resembling ripples as compared with that of quadrature sampling method. On the contrary, the multi-order sampling method, especially fifth-order sampling method showed a very good envelope detection performance.

Purpose This study investigated the clinical presentations of symptomatic Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in children. Methods We reviewed the medical records of 43 children aged 3 days, and the most frequently prescribed antibiotic was amoxicillin-clavulanate (35.7%). Twenty-eight patients were diagnosed with CDI despite taking probiotic supplements, most commonly Lactobacillus acidophilus (53.6%). The most common symptom was diarrhea (72.1%) at the time CDI was diagnosed. C. difficile was eradicated in 11 patients (25.6%) after treatment with oral metronidazole for 10-14 days, and in the two patients (4.6%) who required two courses of oral metronidazole. Sixteen patients (37.2%) showed clinical improvement without any treatment. Conclusion This study showed the various clinical characteristics of CDI in children and that preexisting clinical conditions favored the development of CDI. In addition, CDI was found to occur in a number of patients even after probiotic prophylaxis given in conjunction with antibiotic therapy.

Background BATHE, the acronym for background, affect, trouble, handling, and empathy, is an interview approach that can be applied in the out-patient setting whereby questions belonging to each of the 5 categories are asked in the above order. As we have been taught to believe that BATHE raises the level of patient satisfaction and the quality of medical treatment overall, this study was designed to test the validity of the claim that applying BATHE heightens patient satisfaction. Methods Each of the 5 doctors was assigned 10 patients (5 in the BATHE group and the other 5 in the control group) with each patient being randomly assigned to either of the groups. The control group was interviewed as usual and the BATHE group was interviewed using BATHE. Immediately after the interview, each patient anonymously filled out a patient satisfaction questionnaire. Whether the questions asked were appropriate for each category of the protocol was evaluated by the researcher through video clips taped during the interviews. Results On 7 out of 10 items on the patient satisfaction questionnaire, the BATHE group was found to experience higher level of satisfaction than the control group in a statistically significant manner. The questions asked the BATHE group were confirmed to be more appropriate for each category of the protocol except empathy than those asked the control group. Conclusion As applying the BATHE approach was found to achieve higher level of patient satisfaction, we recommend using it in the out-patient setting.
