This paper presents a novel approach to capture ‘buzz’, the vibrancy and knowledge exchange propensity of localised informal communication flows. Building on a conceptual framework based on relational economic geography, we argue the content of buzz may allow to probe into the character of places and investigate what is ‘in the air’ within regional entrepreneurial milieux. In particular, we analyse big data to listen for the presence of buzz about innovation – defined by discursive practices that reflect an innovative atmosphere – and explore how this may influence regional firm creation. Using information from 180 million geolocated Tweets comprising almost two billion words across NUTS3 regions in the UK for the year 2014, our results offer novel evidence, robust to different model specifications, that regions characterised by a relatively higher intensity of discussion and vibrancy around topics related to innovation may provide a more effective set of informal resources for sharing and recombination of ideas, defining regional capabilities to support and facilitate entrepreneurial processes. The findings contribute to the literature on the intangible dimensions in the geography of innovation and offer new insights on the potential of natural language processing for economic geography research.

This article surveys the literature to explore whether and how internet technologies and applications such as social network sites (SNS) support social interactions and, through them, knowledge transfers at different spatial scales and settings. By employing concepts from economic geography and combining them with ideas and empirics from urban sociology, business, and media studies, this article informs urban thinking about the underpinning mechanisms behind SNS-mediated vis-à-vis face-to-face knowledge-related interactions and how they mirror but also challenge established spatial patterns of knowledge spillovers.

This paper examines how entrepreneurial opportunities co-evolve within a sustainable entrepreneurship ecosystem (SEE). Most of the literature on entrepreneurial ecosystems falls short on integrating the entrepreneurial process in empirical research. To analyze data collected from pre-start-up teams within a nascent SEE on high-tech cellulose-based materials over 3 years, we apply a design science approach that helps understand actors’ collaborative sensemaking in designing and structuring ecosystem features and relationships. Our findings show that the SEE can be seen as a design artifact which evolves by ecosystem actors collectively engaging in new venture ideation and developing opportunity confidence. Furthermore, the paper presents a novel SEE framework, which elaborates on phases and enablers of the opportunity co-evolution process within an emerging ecosystem. We contribute to the literature on sustainable as well as general entrepreneurial ecosystems and offer a new theoretical foundation for a process view on ecosystems.

[EN] Our work aims to analyze the impact of political polarization on movie ratings at the IMDb platform. For that we explore the concepts of Word of Mouth and Buzz marking the important role they play on polarized opinions in movie ratings.We develop a code on python to perform web-scrapping on the sample scope of Brazilian movies and interpret the data collected using a controversiality index based on standard deviation. The outcome sheds some light into the relation between Buzz and Controversiality within the framework of Brazil’s current political scenario.

Buzz marketing in social networks is often seen by announcers as an opportunity to reach the biggest audience. However, the risk of failure of buzz campaigns proves not to be negligible and its consequences may be serious for the company. In order to succeed in such buzz campaigns, this research study focuses on cultural aspects, and more particularly on the central role of cultural congruency. To explore these aspects, a qualitative study, based on 36 face-to-face interviews with marketing professionals/advertisers and consumers, has been carried out. The results highlight the importance of cultural values for consumers in Arab-Muslim countries, especially when buzz marketing campaigns touch the taboos. In September 2014, more than 1.3 million apps were available in Apple iTunes and Android Google Play stores. Very low entry barriers and an extremely high degree of competition characterize these markets. In such environment one of the critical issues is how to attract the attention of users. In this paper we focus on a specic strategy that app developers may use to stimulate demand for their products: versioning man- agement. Practitioners and developers are well aware that managing app updates (i.e., releasing new versions of an existing app) is critical to increase app visibility and to keep users engaged, disguising a hidden strategy to stimulate downloads. We develop a stylized theoretical model to describe why and when updates should be released. We then use an unbalanced panel with characteristics on the top 1,000 apps on iTunes and Google Play stores for ve European countries to empirically test our theoretical predictions. Our results conrm that updates boost downloads and are more likely to be released when the app is experiencing a poor performance. We interpret this nding

Early studies that categorized odontocete pulsed sounds had few means of discriminating signals used for biosonar-based foraging from those used for communication. This capability to identify the function of sounds is important for understanding and interpreting behavior; it is also essential for monitoring and mitigating potential disturbance from human activities. Archival tags were placed on free-ranging Grampus griseus to quantify and discriminate between pulsed sounds used for echolocation-based foraging and those used for communication. Two types of rapid click-series pulsed sounds, buzzes and burst pulses, were identified as produced by the tagged dolphins and classified using a Gaussian mixture model based on their duration, association with jerk (i.e., rapid change of acceleration), and temporal association with click trains. Buzzes followed regular echolocation clicks and coincided with a strong jerk signal from accelerometers on the tag. They consisted of series averaging 359 ± 210 (mean ± SD) clicks with an increasing repetition rate and relatively low amplitude. Burst pulses consisted of relatively short click series averaging 45 ± 54 clicks with decreasing repetition rate and longer inter-click interval that were less likely to be associated with regular echolocation and the jerk signal. These results suggest that the longer, relatively lower amplitude, jerk-associated buzzes are used in this species to capture prey, mostly during the bottom phase of foraging dives, as seen in other odontocetes. In contrast, the shorter, isolated burst pulses that are generally emitted by the dolphins while at or near the surface are used outside of a direct, known foraging context. Postprint

We find that only in the case of iTunes updates boost downloads and are more likely to be released when the app is experiencing poor performance. We interpret this finding as evidence that the lack of quality control by Google Play leads to an excess of updating of Android apps.

The user is the main contributor for creating information in social media. In these media, users are influenced by the information shared through thenetwork. In a social context, there are so-called “buzz”, which is a technique to make noise around an event. This technique engenders that several users will be interested in this event at a time t. A buzz is then popular information in a specific time. A buzz may be a fact (true information) or a rumour (fake, false information). We are interested in studying buzz propagation through time in the social network Delicious. Also, we study the influence of enriched user profilesthat we proposed [2] to propagate the buzz in the same social network. In this paper, we state a case study on some information of the social network Delicious. This latter contains social annotations (tags) provided by users. These tags contribute to influence the other users to follow this information or to use it. This study relies onthree main axes: 1) we focus on tags considered as buzz and analyse their propagation through time 2) we consider a user profile as the set of tags provided by him. We will use the result of our previous work on dynamic user profile enrichment in order to analyse the influence of this enrichment in the buzz propagation. 3) we analyse each enriched user profile in order to show if the enrichment approach anticipate the buzz propagation. So, we can see the interest of filtering the information in order to avoid potential rumours and then, to propose relevant results to the user (e.g. avoid “bad” recommendation).

The paper is concerned with spatial clustering of economic activity and its relation to the spatiality of knowledge creation in various sorts of interactive learning processes. It questions the merit of the prevailing explanatory model where the realm of tacit knowledge transfer is confined to local milieus whereas codified knowledge may roam the globe almost frictionless. When doing so the paper highlights the conditions under which both tacit and codified knowledge can be exchanged locally and globally. A distinction is made between, on the one hand, the learning processes taking place among actors embedded in a community by just being there - dubbed buzz - and, on the other, the knowledge attained by investing in building channels of communication - called pipelines - to selected providers located outside the local milieu. It is argued, that the co-existence of high levels of buzz and many pipelines may provide firms located in outward looking and lively clusters with a string of particular advantages not available to outsiders. Finally, some prescriptive elements, stemming from the argument, are identified.

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) has significant variability in its presentation.In this study, we present 2 novel cases of prostatitis in which “buzz” is described as the primary pain symptom. These cases describe patients with the primary complaint of “cell phone–like buzzing” within the perineum, with accompanying urinary symptoms consistent with prostatitis.CP/CPPS is a multifactorial disease within which psychological, inflammatory, neurologic, and neuromuscular etiologies are at play. As in other disease descriptions, a buzzing sensation represents the interaction of multiple pathways that have significant overlay with CP/CPPS. As such, we believe buzzing might represent a new symptom of CP/CPPS.
