In recent years, the number of initiatives dealing with climate change has increased significantly as human activity releases more and more greenhouse gases into the environment. There is no doubt that the effects of these emissions are numerous and increasingly alarming. Against this background, this paper assumes that climate change requires the engagement of various groups of stakeholders. This engagement is referred to in this paper as ecosystem cooperation for climate action. A feature of ecosystem cooperation is the potential to create a multistakeholder network of new partnerships that can generate innovative solutions to climate change problems. This paper argues that ecosystem collaboration is particularly important for both preventing and responding to climate change. Following a theoretical explanation of the concept of ecosystem collaboration, a case study on climate change and sustainability is presented. This case study highlights best practise examples within a European project entitled “Innovation Laboratories for Climate Actions” (ILCA). Through a consortium of six universities and three research institutes from different European countries, the ILCA project aimed to engage multiple stakeholders in national, regional and local ecosystems to develop innovative solutions to tackle climate change. The project brought together businesses, public administrations, civil society and academia from each country. The findings of this paper emphasise the importance of the ILCA project in tackling climate change through ecosystem collaboration and the establishment of a ‘Climate Innovation Lab’ at the Stefan cel Mare” University in Suceava. Such a lab brings together experts from different fields such as economics, engineering and medicine to find innovative solutions to climate problems. We also emphasise the active role of innovation in helping tourism businesses to adapt to climate change. Innovation and collaboration are crucial to fostering a cooperative environment in relation to climate change mitigation.

Climate change and its impact on the economic and social welfare is a vitally important problem explored everywhere in the modern world. The objective of this research is to determine a correlation between the amount of carbon dioxide emissions in Ukrainian regions and their economic and demographic indicators: gross regional product, turnover of business entities and population density. The study is focused on CO2 emissions from stationary pollution source. The article provides evidence-based arguments that circular economy is the model integrating two central objectives: economic growth and mitigation of effects from climate change. The study revealed a strong correlation between the implementation of circular economy practices and objectives of Sustained Development Goas, in particular with respect to minimization of СО2 emissions. A statistical analysis of the relationship between СО2 emissions and gross regional product (GRP), turnover of business entities and population density at the level of Ukrainian regions was made. It was revealed that all the Ukrainian regions with high rates of per capita GRP growth there is no tendency to increase CO2 emissions. This complies with circular economy priorities: minimization of resource extraction through processing and re-production. The regions with a higher population density were revealed to have lower СО2 emissions, which can be attributed to the fact that a higher population density often entails a more compact urban habitat. The regions with the largest turnover of business entities include regions with their highest population density. Economically developed regions often push technological innovations with breakthrough effects for energy technologies, transport and industrial processes, which help reduce CO2 emissions.

The escalation of climate-induced disasters underscores how climatic variability has become a main question in designing risk-sensitive policies in advanced and developing countries. The macroeconomic implications of Natural Hazards (NHs) are extremely significant, as they can compromise financial stability and long-term prosperity. To mitigate risks and close the knowledge, protection, and development gaps can free resources, speeding up reconstruction of infrastructure, recovering from disruption of supply chains, and returning to pre-disaster levels of activities. This is not a simple task involving different steps of a “ladder approach”, sharing the burden of cost and responsibilities across the relevant stakeholders and reducing moral hazard. This approach rests on Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs) and technological R&D public investments able to crowd private ones in and establish useful Public–Private Insurance Schemes enhancing the disaster risk management role of the state. This paper proposes leveraging innovation technology both to enhance risk assessment and reduce uncertainty for climate-related NHs such as landslides. It is an important interdisciplinary question; in fact, despite the unequivocal acknowledgment of the global warming system, the precise ramifications of global warming and associated climatic shifts on NHs like landslides remain still elusive. The advanced modeling technique implemented by our interdisciplinary PPP contributes to geographically circumscribe the areas eventually subjected to landslides and constantly monitor the vulnerability of their structures, infrastructures, economic activities, and hence population. The reliable data that we can produce through remote sensing acquisition systems are necessary inputs to contain risk exposure both physically and financially.

Business operations of hospitality enterprises are subject of intense scrutiny to determine how they are contributing to the climate action agenda. Existing scholarship is dominated by research conducted in the Global North. This paper contributes a Global South perspective and aims to identify the drivers and challenges for the adoption of carbon footprint strategies in the hospitality sector. The study randomly sampled 165 establishments from the hospitality sector in Zimbabwe. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents and SPSS version 29 was used to generate descriptive and inferential statistics. The results reveal that the main drivers for carbon footprint reduction include a positive public image, conforming to industry best practices, as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, reduction in operating costs and gaining competitive advantage. Identified barriers include financial constraints, high costs of procuring energy-efficient appliances, lack of knowledge, skills gap, weak legal framework and lack of industry cooperation. Arguably, policy interventions for the decarbonisation of hospitality enterprises must be country-specific and broadly seek out local interventions designed to increase pressures, lower barriers and boost incentives for climate change action.

Entrepreneurship is instrumental in promoting innovation towards sustainable economic growth. Through information and communication technology (ICT) access and development, digitalization enhances entrepreneurship, fostering the path to sustainable economic growth. However, the literature results evidenced thus far are mixed and do not consider simultaneously the exploration of these cumulative relationships, a gap the present article tries to fill in. Herein is explored the relationship between entrepreneurial activities, ICT, energy consumption, economic growth, and environmental degradation, examining the impact of digitalization and entrepreneurial activities on carbon degradation, with the corresponding effect on the environment, considering a panel of 16 EU countries between 2001 and 2020, using cross-sectional and causality models to account for short and long-run effects. This study also validates these economies' Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) while finding critical cross-sectional dependencies. Despite finding that ICT and entrepreneurial activities improved environmental quality, our work points out that ICT and entrepreneurial activities deteriorated the environment. All the macroeconomic variables evidence long-run relationships with carbon degradation or environmental quality. However, no causality is found between ICT and economic growth, nor between entrepreneurship and economic growth, therefore challenging the idea that growth boosts ICT or entrepreneurship activities in EU countries. Important policy directions are presented considering the results that may foster better routes to sustainable growth and development for EU countries.

ABSTRCTGlobal climate change has also become a problem faced by college students in Korea. College students can also participate in climate change-related actions, such as reducing disposables. This study investigated the effects of perception of climate change risk, media use, and personal characteristics on participation behavior for climate change with university students, who are practical stakeholders in climate change. Hypothesis 1 is susceptibility, Hypothesis 2 is severity perception, Hypothesis 3 is SNS use, Hypothesis 4 is self-efficacy, and Hypothesis 5 is the effect of social conformity on participation behavior. Data was collected through a survey, and as a result of data analysis, it was found that the social susceptibility among the two risk susceptibility increased participation behavior. It was found that personal susceptibility did not affect participation behavior. Next, the perception of the severity of climate change was verified as a key factor in increasing climate change participation behavior. Perception of severity was the most influential variable in the regression analysis. People who use SNS information on climate change were also active in participation. Among personal characteristics, people with high self-efficacy had positive participation behavior, but people’s social conformity did not affect participation behavior. These results show the perception of climate change from the perspective of college students, the millennial generation, and provide practical implications for climate change participation behavior.

AbstractThis paper uses bibliometric methods to quantitatively analyze global scientific performance and current research fields in the field of global climate change. The intention was to enhance knowledge of the scientific understanding of climate change. The data used in this analysis is based on 259 papers by scholars worldwide that were published in 498 academic journals in the Scopus database between 2006 and 2022 to investigate the methods used in scientific research to study climate change. The scientific knowledge, changes in research hotspots, worldwide geographic distribution of research, and country-specific focus are all summarized in our analysis. The findings indicate that (1) Throughout the era under investigation, the goal of research on climate change has evolved from comprehending the climate system to developing climate technology and regulations, like laws and efficient energy use; (2) The idea of climate change is reflected in modern models of energy efficiency, renewable energy transition, carbon pricing, and circular economy. The idea of climate change, seen from an overall viewpoint, affects carbon footprint, social and economic impact, rising carbon dioxide levels, and carbon sequestration; (3) since 2006, research on climate change vulnerability has grown rapidly, and its publications are widely disseminated in numerous source journals; in terms of global climate research change, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences are the two most productive institutions and Water resource-related disputes and collaboration. Our research can be used by scholars and policymakers to investigate future research goals and to consider the current directions of climate change studies. Future studies can address issues related to human health risks, inequality in society and the economy, policy and regulation in the context of global climate change, and the rate at which emissions will zero out. This study’s primary goal is to close this gap and improve our comprehension of the body of current literature.

Recently, DAC technologies have been recognized as a viable innovation in Korea’s mitigation efforts. In 2023, while formulating a specific implementation plan to meet the national mitigation target in Korea’s 2030 nationally determined contribution (NDC), the government considered setting a separate mitigation target for DAC technologies alongside the existing target for carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCUS) technologies. During government-wide meetings, a clear divide emerged between supporters and opponents. Despite strong demand from supporters, the final national implementation plan did not include a mitigation target for DAC technologies. Focusing on this contestation, this paper explores why setting a separate target for DAC technologies was contested and not accepted at the policy-drafting stage. From the theoretical ground of social acceptance of new and innovative technologies, this paper utilizes four governance principles as social norms with which stakeholders understand and interpret DAC technologies, and analyzes differing framings on DAC technologies. Research results show that dominant framing approaches, hindering the establishment of a DAC technology-specific mitigation target, are i) risks of considering short-term and binding targets in commensurate with long-term targets through DAC technologies, ii) the uncertainty of mitigation potentials by technologically and methodologically under-developed DAC technologies, and iii) the inefficiency of financial investment for DAC technologies. This paper concludes with policy recommendations, emphasizing the need to establish binding short- and mid-term targets in alignment with the 2050 long-term target, government support for technology demonstrations, methodological assistance for leveraging carbon markets, and a redefinition of the relationship between CCUS and DAC technologies.

Understanding public attitudes becomes crucial in the current context, which is defined by climate change and a critical need for sustainable solutions for energy sources. A questionnaire by the Pew Research Center, conducted through the American Trends Panel (ATP), explores the public’s opinions on various emerging energy technologies, preferred energy sources, knowledge of the nation’s energy dependence and attitudes toward environmental policies and climate change. The findings offer an insightful perspective on the interests and people’s concerns and may influence future innovations and policies in the energy sector.

The article is devoted to the study of the current situation, outlining the main trends in cooperation between the European Union and the countries of South Africa and determining the prospects for its deepening. Attention is focused on the cooperation of the European Union in the economic, political and social spheres with the countries of South Africa. The evolution of interaction, including the impact of the colonial past on modern relations is considered, and the role of the EU as a key investor and trading partner for South Africa is analyzed. The authors substantiate the importance of the EU investments in the development of infrastructure, education, health care and technology, which contribute to economic growth and increase the competitiveness of local enterprises. Particular attention is paid to the Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and the countries of South Africa (SADC EPA) and its impact on trade relations. Changes in the trade balance between the EU and South Africa, in particular the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on exports and imports, are studied. Specific examples of cooperation with countries such as Namibia and Botswana are considered, and the impact of foreign investment on their economic development is analyzed. Prospects for further development of cooperation between the EU and the countries of South Africa in certain spheres are highlighted. In particular, the EU and South African countries can work together to remove trade barriers and promote investment; the EU can continue to provide development assistance to South African countries to help them achieve their objectives; strengthen its cooperation in the field of peace and security to help address the challenges facing Africa as a whole; cooperate in the fight against climate change and on the development of a sustainable economy. The article states that cooperation between the EU and South African countries can benefit both regions. Stronger cooperation can contribute to economic growth, development, peace, and security.

The widespread concern about the devastating impact of climate change, especially in the agricultural sector, has become severe. This paper aims to explore and predict the impact of climate change on oil palm production using future climate conditions projected by the National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM). An error correction model (ECM) and autoregressive distributed lags (ARDL) cointegration approach were applied to assess the short-run and long-run impact of climate change on oil palm production. The estimated short-run coefficients disclosed that the oil palm own price and fertilizer use positively affected oil palm production in the second lag period, and increased acreage benefited oil palm production in the long run. The rainfall variable negatively affected the second lag period but positively rose oil palm production in the long run. The results of forecasting analysis revealed that SN1 (minimum climate variability), SN2 (maximum climate variability), and SN3 (average climate variability) would increase oil palm production by 5%, 1%, and 2%, respectively. Meanwhile, the oil palm yield would rise from 16.73 t/ha in 2020 to 16.89 t/ha in 2030 under SN1. However, with maximum rainfall, the yield would drop to 16.41 t/ha in 2030. Overall, climate change would likely reduce oil palm yield. This research could serve as empirical guides for policymakers and oil palm stakeholders in terms of practical and policy implications to adapt to climate change-related risks and uncertainties. The practical cover investments in technologies, such as developing drought-tolerant and early-maturity crop varieties, boosting water saving, and reducing evapotranspiration.

This qualitative study scrutinises how green energy investment affects Indigenous Wayúu people in Colombia's La Guajira region. Employing coloniality of power and decolonial feminism frameworks, we delve into Wayúu women's struggles and resilience in defending territories against large-scale wind energy projects. Our findings suggest that governments and businesses are 'tuned in' to the economic benefits of these projects, yet 'tuned out' from Indigenous peoples' ontologies, concerns, needs and cosmovisions. This dynamic prompts questions about the unintended consequences of organisations' engagement with Indigenous peoples through corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies. Despite good intentions, CSR practices that are 'tuned out' from Indigenous peoples' cosmovisions may inadvertently reinforce power imbalances and further marginalise Indigenous communities. Our study highlights the need to honour Indigenous territories and protect Indigenous women's rights in long-term investments. Clean energy focus can mask green colonialism, which Wayúu women actively safeguard, upholding Indigenous worldviews via feminist decoloniality. We advocate for businesses to incorporate diverse perspectives beyond the dominant western worldview into their climate change mitigation actions and CSR strategies, and for public policies to balance decarbonisation efforts with Indigenous rights to contribute to sustainable and equitable energy transitions. The article explores regenerative agriculture's evolution and definitions, emphasizing its transformation from traditional farming methods to holistic practices that enhance ecological, social, and economic outcomes. It also discusses the integration of medicinal and aromatic plants into regenerative agriculture systems, highlighting their roles in soil health improvement, biodiversity conservation, and economic diversification.

The article presents data from authoritative international organizations on the noticeable change in the planet's climate compared to the pre-industrial period. It is emphasized that in recent years, climate change has become especially intense. One of the results of climate change is the increase in the frequency and destructive effects of hurricanes in various parts of the planet, droughts and crop losses in agriculture, floods, and rising sea levels, which leads to large economic losses. An important area of decarbonization of the global economy is the production of electricity using climate-neutral energy sources. The article provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of the efficiency of traditional large nuclear reactors and small modular reactors (SMRs). Significant technological, environmental and economic advantages of SMRs are noted. A comprehensive model for the development of global energy in the context of decarbonization is proposed, which includes innovative areas: SMRs, large nuclear power plants, wind, solar energy and the use of biofuels.

This paper examines the academic research on climate transition risk. The objective of this study is to provide descriptive characteristics of research trends in the field of climate transition risk and make recommendations based on major bibliometric data such as authors, journals, citation figures, methodology, geographical focus and author’s location. The systematic literature review methodology was used to obtain information on publications and intellectual structure related to climate transition risk from the Scopus bibliographic database until November 2023. A search strategy was developed to screen the title for eligibility, using the abstract and full text where needed. The review showed that annual evolution has increased significantly in recent years. Findings revealed a marked European and Chinese dominance with little contribution from Global South in this research field with limited contributions from Global South in terms of focus and authors and organizations contributions. The predominant data source is data-set indices, with limited methodological diversity in climate transition risk research. Findings also showed that authors from universities, research institutes and central banks are contributing to climate transition risk literature. The main themes in climate transition risk research are banking, climate policy, stock market, and asset price and performance. The impacts of climate change on interconnectedness, systemic risk and financial stability were widely covered in overlapping publications.

Fisheries, particularly small-scale fisheries, is recognized as a source of dietary diversity, food security, and poverty alleviation. Fish is widely regarded as a significant source of protein. Despite the significance of fisheries, it is faced with several challenges such as constant change in climate. This study was conducted to examine the perception of fisher folks on climate change and the relationship between socio-economic characteristics and adoption of climate smart fisheries using semi-structured questionnaire. Perception towards climate change and adoption of climate-smart fisheries were analyzed using statistical inferential statistics. The predictor of co-management as a mitigative measure for climate change in fisheries was also analyzed with an ordered logistic regression technique. The result showed that 92.5 % of the fishers have formal education. Majority of the fishers (98.3 %) have no access to storage facilities whilst 96.66 % have access to market. In addition, 31.66 % of the fishers have access to information on climatic and weather conditions. On the perception of climate change, 47.5 % of fishers perceived decrease in amount of rainfall as evidence of climate change whilst 66.6 % perceived decrease in sea level as evidence of climate change. A few fishers perceived an increase in humidity, change in temperature and wind-storm or sea breeze as evidence of climate change. Again, 48.33 % of the fishers agree to reduction of fleet's carbon emission whilst 33.33 % fishers disagreed to diversifying sources of household income as an adoption to climate-smart fisheries. Additional cost in the beginning of adoption of climate smart fisheries as a constraint was agreed upon by 50.00 % of fishers. The results of the ordered logistic regression show that age, education, having a second source of income and an increase of fuel subsidy are statistically significant to fishers perception of the extent to which co-management could contribute to address climate change was detected.

With the well-documented predicted continuation of rising sea-levels as a result of man-made climate change over the next century, two interrelated issues have emerged in international law and global policy discussions: what to do about both those who are displaced due to climate change, those whose homelands are entirely physically eradicated due to climate change, and those whose homelands remain geographically/ physically intact but who nonetheless experience forced migrations, and what transnational duties exist in both cases. This article will explore the interrelated but separate nature of these two issues, and the salient features of appropriate transnational responses, particularly the gendered dimensions of forced migration in both cases. It builds upon the existing literature of statelessness, forced migration, displacement and gendered aspects of the transnational obligations in all of these, whilst forging new ground by advancing a new thesis for how the twentieth-century paradigms of forced migration and statelessness must be modified in the wake of this new reality, of climate-crisis-induced forced migration and statelessness.

The article proposes a conceptual approach to modeling the impact of climate change on the productivity of the agrarian sector, substantiates the factors of climate change, and forms the information base of the study. Specifically, rainfall data was taken from the Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station database (CHIRPS), which is a quasi-global dataset of precipitation amounts over 30+ years. CHIRPS incorporates 0.05° resolution satellite imagery together with data from local stations to create gridded rainfall time series to analyze trends and monitor seasonal drought. In order to obtain rainfall data for each of the selected countries, the Large-Scale International Borders (LSIB) database was used. This data is taken from two other datasets: the LSIB Lines Vector File and the World Vector Shoreline (WVS) from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). Additional precipitation information was obtained using the Google Earth Engine after performing procedures with a sample of geolocation data for each country, obtaining actual precipitation data for the observation period, exporting the data and processing them to bring the results to the annual figure. The formed information base on the factors of climate change has allowed to develop models of productivity of grain production in the countries that are the largest wheat producers in the world. The results of the development of models led to the conclusion that climate change affects crop yields in countries that are leading producers of cereals. The obtained results can be used to predict changes in yield and production depending on climatic parameters such as temperature and precipitation, as well as to determine the optimal and extreme values of climatic factors.

Enhancing sustainable tourism destinations is a crucial endeavor. Sustainability improvement measures are needed not only in newly built environments but also in physical capacities that are already established and that have been in operation for an extended period. This contribution addresses second home areas in Denmark which are generally characterized by a persistent and notable planning deficit. The challenge lies in redirecting the trajectory of these areas through meticulous planning and instilling a recognition of their sustainability potential with policy mak-ers, DMOs, second-home owners, and tourists. Drawing upon in-depth case studies in selected second home areas and general inquiries into planning practices, this contribution presents ten distinctive approaches to planning: 1): Optimizing land resource utilization. 2): Planning for sec-ond homes beyond the immediate coastal zone. 3): Enhancing accessibility. 4): Decreasing ener-gy consumption. 5): Ensuring flooding protection. 6): Mitigating insufficient wastewater treat-ment. 7): Facilitating solid waste treatment. 8): Reducing the carbon footprint from the construc-tion. 9): Enhancing biodiversity. 10): Involving the owners and tourists. The article contributes with substance to the tourism planning discussion and points to some of the challenges encoun-tered in the pursuit of the objectives.

The global financial system emerged in the aftermath of World War II, playing a crucial role in the global economic and geopolitical landscape dominated by developed nations. However, the world is currently undergoing rapid changes. Developing countries are assuming increasingly important roles and positions in the global economy. The robust resurgence of Russia’s military and political power as a superpower, along with China’s rise in economic, technological, and military domains, is unveiling a new global order. Furthermore, the relentless development of digital technology is profoundly and comprehensively reshaping the economic, social, and political fabric of nations worldwide. Global issues such as climate change and population aging play significant roles in shaping the future of the global economy and finance. The research objective is to reveal and analyze the main factors shaping the future of the global economy and finance. The article employs a qualitative research method with analysis, synthesis and commenting on secondary sources of information from related studies. The authors conclude that six main relevant factors can influence the future of the global economy and finance: (i) the development of digital technology; (ii) geopolitical situation; (iii) the international role of the US dollar; (iv) climate change; (v) population aging; (vi) the inevitability of structural transformation.

The article explores the characteristics and approaches of climate-neutral business development in the European Union based on digital transformation. The focus is on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which currently generate a significant share of global economic emissions and need to accelerate the integration of effective decarbonization models. The data indicates that the proportion of emissions generated by SMEs in the business sector and their energy consumption represent the most crucial indicators for assessing the climate neutrality of a country's development. These indicators exhibit a considerable degree of variation across EU countries. Concurrently, the research indicates a notable disparity between SMEs and large corporations in terms of their preparedness to implement various climate-oriented initiatives and their capacity to integrate digital solutions. The article presents a systematic analysis of the potential for digitalization to reduce the SMEs' carbon footprint across various emission areas. These include direct emissions from industrial processes, indirect emissions from energy consumption, and key links in the value chain. Five clusters of digital solutions were identified as the most effective and particularly supported in the European model of climate-neutral development. The bioeconomy, grounded in the shift from fossils to bio-based resources, plays an important role in the Net Zero 2050 scenario. However, even if rooted in circular thinking, bioeconomy business models are not free from environmental, social, and economic concerns. This paper deals with the causes of the unsustainability of business models in the biofuels sector, embracing an unconventional approach that focuses on the uncaptured value. The value uncaptured is the negative aspect of value, and it consists of creating too much or not enough value during the product lifecycle. Value uncaptured can threaten the sustainability of circular business models, which is why it constitutes the ‘dark side’ of circular strategies. Starting from a gap in the existing literature and supported by theoretical background, this study aims to suggest a theoretical framework to identify the causes of the negative value in the biofuel sector. The paper uses a qualitative tool, namely a case study analysis. The findings reveal that circular business models can suffer from value uncaptured, which can take the form of value absence, value destroyed, value surplus, and value missed. Identifying these forms of value can transform them into opportunities for value creation. These results enrich the research on the circular economy with a new and unconventional approach. The elaborated theoretical framework can become a qualitative tool to identify what causes companies’ circular business models to underperform.

The pitch template introduced by Faff (2015; 2021) has become increasingly popular in academic research. Therefore, this paper aims to offer readers new ideas about a more time-efficient and easy-to-understand way of exploring a new research area and topic through a reverse engineering approach. The author believes that a reverse engineering pitch is the cornerstone to assist new researchers or PhD students to sharpen their pitching skills before they start to prepare an original pitch for a new research topic.

Climate change, tourism, and green tourism destination marketing are fields that practically seem connected but were not fully explored as connected by academics globally, and that gap deserves more research attention. Global warming concerns all tourism stakeholders because it negatively affects destination marketing and tourism activities. The study aims to take stock of global climate change, tourism, and destination marketing debates to identify progress and gaps. The study explores studies that are Scopus-indexed. VOSviewer was utilized to analyze the data. The study also found that there is heavy academic dependency syndrome by the global South on the global North due to information dissemination trends from developed to underdeveloped countries. Also evident is the suppression of the South’s minds by the North not accepting ideas from the South and publishing them in European journals. The study implies that academic collaboration and publishing are encouraged between the North and South academics to tackle the three dimensions and bring solutions to the global warming and tourism time bomb crisis. No study has been done similarly covering these three constructs filling a gap in the literature.

Hailstorm research in tourism remains scant despite growing evidence of increasing hailstorms and associated damages to destinations and attractions due to climate change. This study examined hailstorm occurrence, damage and loss, preparedness and adaptation, recovery and resilience resilience-building at the Sun City Resort in South Africa. Data was collected from a staff survey (n=131), staff interviews, guest comments, and relevant Sun City Resort secondary documentation such as storm recovery and annual reports. It emerged that the 2018 hailstorm caused significant damages, yet no effective early warning systems were in place. This led to significant economic and non-economic losses, such as damage to infrastructure, cancelled activities and negative publicity. There was also no long-term strategy towards hailstorm resilience, with the resort adopting a reactive rather than proactive approach. The study contributes to climate change-induced hailstorm research in tourism while informing tourism destination resilience-building practices. Suggestions are made linked to building back and forth better in terms of hailstorm risk preparedness by the Sun City Resort.

The tourism industry contributes significantly to carbon emissions and ultimately global warming. As tourism demand starts to increase in the post-COVID-19 era, carbon emissions by the hospitality sector are also set to continue increasing. This calls for the need to focus on mitigation strategies in the hospitality sector as climate change is now regarded as an imminent crisis. There is, however, a dearth of literature on climate change disclosures by hotels in general. This study, therefore examines the state of carbon disclosures by Global South hotels, specifically in sub-Saharan Africa. A desktop review of literature sources ranging from peer-reviewed journal articles, books, book chapters and reports was utilized in this study The results of the study provide a preliminary presentation on the state of climate change reporting by hotels and contribute to the growing sustainability reporting discourse in the hotel sector of the Global South which is seen as largely voluntary and in its infancy. The findings generally reveal that carbon disclosures are minimally practised by hotels in the Global South as compared to the Global North environments.

COVID-19 brought new marketing disruptions in the tourism sector amid global traction and action towards carbon neutrality, following the Paris Agreement of 2015 and the Glasgow Pact of achieving NetZero emissions by 2050. Drawing from the Ad Net Zero Guide 10-Point Plan for businesses to infuse climate action (SDG 13) into their operations, this study utilizes a qualitative approach through annual and other company reports, interviews, observations, and Question Pros from Sun City hotels to examine the progress of the hospitality industry. The results reveal that the four hotels, Cabanas Hotel, Sun City Hotel, The Palace Hotel, and Cascades Hotel have green initiatives that improve water, waste, and energy efficiency. There is a slow pace to enforce saving the environment at a faster pace in the resort. The findings reveal that marketing communication strategies employed by Sun City Resort in exhibiting green initiatives were moderately successful. The findings reveal that the four hotels in Sun City generally harnessed the 10-Point Plan, although this may not be explicitly credited to the 2020 Ad Net Zero Initiative. The paper recommends that the entities under consideration keep improving their commitment to the Climate Action SDG and market on-the-ground initiatives widely for peer learning and to save the environment, lives, and livelihoods. However, more actions and policies need to be in place to reduce carbon emissions such as reuse, recycling, and reduction and applying sustainable marketing.

Purpose – In this study, the authors examine the push and pull effects of extreme weather events on migration among governorates in Egypt. Design/methodology/approach – To estimate the effect of extreme weather events on internal migration, the authors use migration gravity models and data from the 1996 and 2006 Population and Housing Censuses. The authors measure weather extremes by the number of months in the past 36 months with temperatures or precipitation of a governorate below the 5th percentile and above the 95th percentile of the distribution of monthly temperatures or precipitation of the corresponding governorate during the period 1900–2006. Findings – This study’s results suggest that high temperatures in the origin area act as a push factor. High-temperature extremes have a positive effect on out-migration. A 1% increase in the number of months with high-temperature extremes in the original governorate results in a 0.1% increase in the number of out-migrants. Practical implications – The study suggests that people may respond to weather extremes through migration. However, climate migrants in Egypt may encounter several significant risks that authorities must address. Originality/value – This study is one of the first attempts to measure the push and pull effect of weather extremes on migration in Egypt.

Nowadays people from all over the world have to face climate change. This issue can take different forms like changes in temperatures, sea level increases or natural disasters (floods, droughts, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunami, heat waves). Throughout this paper we test the impact of climate change (proxied by the level of precipitations) on international migration from Romania and Poland to the main destinations from the European Union by testing the gravity model of migration. Due to the fact that both countries taken into consideration are exposed to extreme weather events like floods, it is important to find out how people deal with these problems. They adapt locally or migrate abroad? Policymakers need to know how people react to climate change because they have to develop specific adaptation policies. One significant novelty in our study is that we consider new and up-to-date reasons for migrating abroad from Romania and Poland. In this way we fill the gap on this topic related to Romania and Poland as origin countries. By applying a Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood Estimator on a balanced panel database for the 2001-2018 time period we have found that Romanian people are more prone to emigrate because of climate reasons rather than Polish people.

The increasing intensity and frequency of extreme climate events have made improving the adaptability to extreme climate events a strategic imperative for manufacturing companies. This paper investigates whether manufacturing enterprises increase green technology innovation affected by different extreme climate events. Based on panel data of Chinese listed manufacturing enterprises, we show that extreme precipitation events can positively promote green technology innovation, yet extreme temperature events do not. Heterogeneity analyses suggest that the effect of extreme precipitation events on green technology innovation is more significant for non-state-owned enterprises, poor performance enterprises, and high R&D intensity enterprises than other enterprises. Furthermore, the facilitating effect of extreme precipitation events on green technology innovation is merely temporary.

The intensity of climate change on the planet under the influence of human economic activity is analyzed. 2023, according to experts, was the hottest year in the entire history of climate observations. The highest content of harmful gases in the atmosphere was also noted. Climate change causes great economic damage to humanity. In March 2024, heads of state and government and other high-ranking representatives of 32 countries gathered in Brussels for the inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit. The Summit supported global efforts to develop nuclear energy in areas such as investment, innovation, and training to address climate change and improve the energy security of the global economy. An analysis of the system of elements of economic decarbonization, their current and future value, problems of development of such elements was carried out, which showed the most important importance in the near future for the global development of small modular reactors and offshore wind energy in combination with mass production and use of electric vehicles. The key to decarbonizing the economy is effective management.

Purpose: The study aims at establishing the level of interest in the green bond market by investors and specific factors that influence stakeholders’ investment decisions in South Africa. Design/methodology/approach: The primary data was collected through interviews leveraging survey questions from the Climate Bond Initiative survey and a thematic analysis conducted. Stakeholders involved in green bonds listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange were targeted. Findings/results: Most respondents recognised green bonds as a critical enabler to support South Arica’s energy transition and the clarity on South Africa’s energy plan will catalyse investment. The study revealed a consensus for the application of strict definitions and standards for green bonds, whilst consideration should be given for leniency to increase issuances as the market matures. A barrier that was highlighted, was the slow development of a pipeline of large-scale projects. Majority of respondents indicated that beyond credit fundamentals; full or partial guarantees, subsidies and incentives will be most important in stimulating the development of the market. Practical implications: There is strong potential to grow, as investors prefer green bonds with strong returns and green credentials. Incentives such as high tax rates for investments in fossil fuels, once-off incentives for new issuers such as anchor capital or subsidies to carry reporting cost can catalyse this growth. Originality/value: This study surfaces the underlying dynamics that contribute to the growth and development of the green bond market in South Africa that largely align with that of European and Asian markets. This presents an opportunity to explore strategies that could be translated to grow the bond market.

Purpose. This research aims to quantify the willingness to pay (WTP) of urban residents in the Mekong Delta for the environmental and social benefits associated with renewable energy projects. By analysing their preferences and priorities regarding renewable energy implementation, this study aims to contribute to the increasing knowledge on the drivers of sustainable energy transitions in developing regions. Methodology / approach. This paper leverages a choice modeling (CM) framework to analyse the economic viability of renewable energy investments in Vietnam. The CM technique is advantageous for its ability to capture individual preferences for complex goods or services characterised by multiple attributes and trade-offs. This enables a detailed assessment of the diverse economic values associated with renewable energy sources, beyond their traditional energy generation capacity, including environmental externalities, social impacts, and potential synergies with other sectors. Results. Residents showed significant WTP for renewable energy initiatives improving landscape aesthetics, wildlife habitats, air quality, and job opportunities. Higher income, education, and knowledge level are positively associated with greater WTP. Younger respondents showed a strong position in favor of renewable energy sources. Households with more children were less likely to support the status quo, and married respondents were more pro-renewable. Perceived community involvement emerged as a significant factor in supporting renewable energy policies. Originality / scientific novelty. This study represents a novel application of CM within the Vietnamese context, providing valuable quantitative data for policymakers and stakeholders. By estimating WTP for specific renewable energy attributes, we inform cost-benefit assessments and support the development of efficient policies for managing renewable energy investments. This data facilitates resource allocation and prioritisation of projects with the highest societal value. Practical value / implications. Our findings underscore the crucial role of public awareness and education in driving renewable energy implementation. Residents with a clear understanding of the benefits demonstrate a higher WTP. Hence, we recommend a multifaceted communication strategy to educate the public about the environmental, social, and economic benefits of renewable energy. This involves utilising diverse channels like community meetings, media outreach, online platforms, and expert engagement to disseminate accurate and engaging information. By fostering knowledge and understanding, we can cultivate a strong public mandate for renewable energy investment, facilitating informed decision-making and accelerating the transition to a sustainable energy future in the Mekong Delta.

Globally, the EU energy system has gradually emerged as an educational science research agenda which is required for the unpredictable environment of energy consumption. Our research extends beyond ethical dimensions of the affordable and renewable energy systems but through balanced energy making decisions. Eco-innovation is driving clean energy development and sustainable solutions and can be a win-win solution for both companies and the environment. This paper examines eco-innovation in the corporate sustainability process, emphasizing the advantages of sustainable businesses. It specifically analyzes the business landscape in Moldova, exploring the adoption of sustainable practices and entrepreneurs' perspectives on business sustainability in the face of climate change. The findings reveal that Moldovan companies require support and concrete actions. While there is awareness and understanding of sustainability concepts among entrepreneurs, many companies lack a solid sustainability/eco-innovation strategy. These results highlight the need for increased awareness and proactive measures within Moldova's business community to effectively address sustainability challenges.

Considering the global state of the current economy we can notice a slowdown across both developed and developing countries, most of them facing the risk of recession. This paper aims to explore the intersection of ESG, and the pressing challenges confronting the global economy. The article will emphasize the significance and urgency of addressing these challenges to foster sustainable growth and resilience. The study seeks to analyze potential benefits that the integration of ESG norms can bring to the global economy and highlight the reasons why it has become so crucial. The research methods employed provide an overview of the key issues with the greatest impact that are shaping the present global economy as well as how ESG - Environmental, Social, and Governance factors have emerged as catalysts for change by mitigating risks, capitalizing on opportunities, and driving long-term value. The findings of this study serve as a foundation for developing more viable and resilient practices, enabling informed decision-making, and ensuring the long-term sustainable growth of the global economy overall.

Climate change and environmental constraints are the biggest challenges facing the economy and society. Because they influence price and financial stability, controversial or trade-off decisions are sometimes required. In recent years, we have observed an increasing interest concerning central banks’ role in addressing these issues and supporting green finance development. This article proposes to evidence the impact of central banks’ climate change discourse on financial stability at the European banking level, considering their role in financial stability. We employed an event study methodology on systemic risk measures computed for 181 banks listed on European stock exchanges, using daily observations for 2015-2021. On the other side, we identified speeches of European central bank governors related to their involvement in climate change policy. The empirical results confirm the assumption that participation by central banks generally has positive effects on financial stability and some concrete measures were visible. While central banks cannot make climate policy and are not the critical element in this area, along with other economic, financial and governmental institutions, they can play an important role.

The Paris Agreement's signatories submitted in 2021 their updated climate action targets and commitments, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These goals encompass the efforts that countries will make in the next few years to reduce emissions and improve resilience. Meteorological and climatic products are a significant tool in climate risk management and adaptation to climate variability. In order to build resilience for sustainable development, both climate change and extreme weather occurrences must be incorporated into risk assessments. The goal of this research is to highlight the key approaches used by the world's major countries for monitoring and preventing climate hazards. Furthermore, the main actions implemented by Romania are taken into account. We will also explore a potential link between climate risks in the context of online commerce and the redefinition of global business models.

Many developed countries have committed to targets to reduce their carbon emissions under international agreements. However, a recent 2021 study found that only one country, The Gambia, is on track to meeting its Paris targets. A key mechanism for achieving these national targets is the government. Therefore, the failure of most countries to meet their targets highlights the importance of evaluating the major policy alternatives. Australia instituted a carbon pricing scheme in 2012 that was repealed in 2014 and subsequently replaced with an emissions reduction fund in 2015. This provides a unique opportunity to study the effects of these two major alternative government policies on government salience. This study applies stakeholder theory and finds that the power and urgency of both policies was weakened by uncertainty, an often-neglected factor affecting stakeholder salience. Furthermore, we note that an evaluation of government salience must also consider firm and industry differences and the effect of positively versus negatively framed interventions.

Much of the knowledge about economic and environmental sustainability (EES) is couched in scientific and technical language and represented in complex diagrams of the knowledge flows in the process. The area is also a highly contested space. In addition, the role of individuals in decision-making about EES is downplayed with government overtures about sustainability directed to the corporate world. However, of the 23.1m SMEs in Europe, 21.6m employed fewer than nine people and their value-added part of the European economy was about €3.9 trillion. The 197m households in the EU had an average of 2.2 members. Individuals matter in decision-making about EES. While the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals are laudable, major obstacles in their implementation rest with the behaviour of individuals, e.g., the propensity of people to say one thing and do another and fail to put policy into practice. In this context, the article discusses Kurt Lewin’s “field theory” and reviews how cognitive dissonance and neuroscientific factors affect human behavior. The Circular Economy model of production and consumption illustrates how facilitating and inhibiting factors influence the implementation of its principles and practices. A review of the approaches and organizing principles used by one Higher Education Institution in delivering a subject underpinned with EES principles, demonstrates how obstacles on the road to sustainability can be overcome.

AbstractEven though Environmental tax policy impacts inequality theoretically, empirical studies remain scanty not only in the context of volumes and the estimation approaches but are also focused on selected advanced countries, communities, households, and emerging countries, the neglect of the global or big picture effect, which is essential for measuring the overall effect of the collective and individual country-concerted efforts in addressing this global cancer. We provide empirical evidence in the global context using the novel method of moments quantile regression. We found that Income Inequality across the globe is sharply reduced by restrictive environmental tax policy, a finding that has ramifications for global sustainable development, particularly in dealing with the ravaging effects of Covid-19.

AbstractClimate change carries risks that need to be mitigated by all parties, including companies because it affects company value. Many studies find that voluntary disclosure positively affects firm value in developing countries. This study aims to examine the effect of voluntary disclosure (CSR and carbon disclosure on firm value) in the developing country of Indonesia. Researchers suspect that voluntary disclosure practice in developing countries is still low, so that investors respond negatively. To test the hypothesis using regression with a total of 72 observations from the energy sector companies. The results of the study show that voluntary disclosure has a negative effect on firm value. The level of voluntary disclosure in Indonesia is still low, just complying with government regulations, and it is still considered a cost that affects the firm’s value. The implication of this research is to encourage the government to immediately make regulations and concrete steps to mitigate the impact of climate change.

AbstractAlthough studies on climate change and accounting have garnered paramount interest in last decade, there is a void in the literature in terms of a summary overview of climate change and accounting. This study aims to provide a state-of-the-art summary of the literature on climate change and accounting. For this, it uses the PRISMA protocol, VOSViewer, and R. The analysis is based on big data from Scopus for the period between 2013 and 2023. Similarly, co-occurrence and co-authorship analyses are also performed. The results show a significant increase in related research during the last decade, which reached its peak in 2022. This increase is attributed to increased publishing opportunities and intensive efforts, particularly in countries such as China and United States. Additionally, robust organizational support, such as universities, funding sponsors, and author productivity, are found to significantly contribute to this growth. Key events, such as the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and accounting standards also play a pivotal role in driving this growth. This study shows the transformation of the accounting literature in addressing climate change, leading to the emergence of new disciplines, including Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) and carbon accounting. In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive synthesis of the fragmented literature and suggests potential avenues for future review.

AbstractThis study examines strategic response towards climate change mitigation by listed firms in the energy sector in Malaysia from 2010 to 2019. It also examines whether institutional pressures and attributes of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) drive such strategic response. Using a TwoStep cluster analysis, and based on 271 firm-year observations, the results show that there are two types of strategic response portrayed by the energy firms, i.e. indifferent and emerging. To analyze the determinants of the firms’ strategic response, two logistic regression techniques are employed, i.e. robust standard errors clustered by firms and lagged structure approach. The results suggest that firms strategic response is shaped by institutional pressures and CEOs attributes, namely, CEOs with international experiences, and CEOs who have experiences in addressing environmental issues. These inferences are robust to several sensitivity tests, including the lagged structure approach, Heckman’s (1979) selection bias correction, an alternative measure of firms’ strategic responses, a matched-sample approach, and controlling for possible international pressures faced by the firms. Overall, the results indicate that in emerging countries, such as Malaysia, with weak pressures from non-governmental organizations, both the government and CEOs need to play dominant roles in addressing climate change issue.

AbstractThis study examines whether powerful CEOs and the strength of the regulatory pressures influence firms’ decisions to disclose their carbon emissions. Powerful CEOs are examined in three dimensions, i.e. CEO ownership power, CEO structural power, and CEO expert power. Focusing on firms listed on Bursa Malaysia and employing logistic regression models with clustered standard errors, the results show a negative association between CEO ownership power, measured in terms of ownership interest, and firms’ decisions to disclose carbon emissions. These results align with the findings of prior studies and provide support for agency theory, suggesting that entrenchment effects occur when CEOs own large ownership interest in the firms, thus adversely impacting carbon disclosure decisions. The results also show a positive association between the strength of the regulatory pressures and carbon disclosure decisions, supporting the institutional theory prediction that firms respond to external pressures by adjusting their organizational structure. These inferences are robust to additional sensitivity analyses, including the Heckman’s (1979) selection bias correction, alternative specifications of the ownership interests, and validation of the regulatory pressures. The results demonstrate that an indirect pressure exerted by Bursa Malaysia through the adoption of mandatory sustainability reporting has a positive impact on carbon disclosure. To further enhance carbon emissions reporting, it is timely for regulators to consider implementing direct measures, such as mandatory GHG reporting, to address associated challenges.
