Abstract

Biofuels are considered as one of the best viable and inexhaustible alternatives to conventional diesel fuel. Alcohols have become very important and popular in the present scenario due to their peculiar fuel properties and production nature. This study examines the effect of n-amyl alcohol and exhaust gas recirculation of 10% and 20% on various engine characteristics of common rail direct injection (CRDI) compression ignition engine. The proportion of n-amyl alcohol varies from 5% to 25% in 5% step (by volume). The obtained results show that diesel/n-amyl alcohol blends decrease the mean gas temperature and cylinder pressure, which is 1.88% and 4.25% less at 75% load for n-amyl alcohol (25%) with conventional diesel fuel. The duration of combustion has shown a hike of 4.66 °CA for 25% n-amyl alcohol (at 75% load) compared to conventional diesel fuel. However, the cumulative heat release rate improved by 12.95% higher for 25% n-amyl alcohol at 75% load due to the extended delay in ignition. While n-amyl alcohol was used, the emission of nitrogen oxide emissions decreased considerably. However, the hydrocarbon (HC) (7–9%) and carbon monoxide (CO) (6–8%) emissions are increased due to inferior fuel properties like high latent heat evaporation of n-amyl alcohol. Compared with other blends, n-amyl alcohol (5%) produced results comparable to conventional diesel fuel, which is 3.6% higher in BSFC, 2.37% higher BTE, and 33.33% higher CO emissions 18.18% more in HC emission, and 17.55% less NOx emission. Without further modification, we can use 25% n-amyl alcohol in the combustion ignition engines. From this evidence, we can summarize that n-amyl alcohol is a biofuel that is both renewable and sustainable, and also it considerably reduces harmful nitrogen oxide emissions. The performance, if needed, can be improved by changing the parameters of the engine.

Complex results, obtained in the investigation of the critical mixture n‐amyl alcohol–nitromethane by acoustic spectroscopy and light scattering are reported. The experimental results are applied to evaluate the lifetimes, concentration fluctuation correlation length, mean concentration wavelength, and intermolecular interaction length. Acoustic measurements were performed for various concentrations, two temperatures, and a wide range of frequencies. The quantity α/ f2 was found to be dependent on the frequency, temperature, and concentration, and to exhibit a maximum for the critical composition of the mixture; the maximum decreases with increasing frequency of the acoustic wave. Dispersion of α/ f2 is not accompanied by measurable changes in the propagation velocity of the wave as a function of frequency. The theories of Chaban and Fixman are used to determine the intermolecular interaction length and concentration fluctuation correlation length. Abstract

The change in refractive index with temperature has been determined at atmospheric pressure for water, methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, n-amyl alcohol, pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, decane and four different kinds of dimethyl silicone oil from about 2 to 80°C. All measurements were made using the D spectrum of the natrium line (wavelength : 589.3 nm). Liquid sample was boxed in a small Pyrex container in order to prevent evaporation of test liquid during measurement. The Pyrex container was set into an Abbe refractometer. The measured refractive index for the length of 589.3 nm was transferred to that to the wavelength of 632.8 nm using dispersive power. The data of refractive index vs. temperature were fitted to a second-degree poloynomial. By differentiating tese equations with temperature, thermooptic coefficients dn/dT were obtained over the range of temperature. Estimated maximum error in the thermooptic coefficient is within 3%.

Abstract

The flash point is an important property of a coating. Flash points are used by various regulatory agencies to classify coatings according to their relative flammability and to determine the container type and labeling, shipping, and storage requirements. Flash points of solvent mixtures are sensitive to non-ideal behavior. Mixtures of oxygenated and hydrocarbon solvents often exhibit such non-ideal behavior. A method of calculating the flash points of coatings containing mixtures of oxygenated and hydrocarbon solvents and petroleum distillates is presented. The method accounts for mixture non-ideality by calculating component activity coefficients. A comparison of the predicted flash points with actual flash points measured on a Setaflash 01SF for seven coatings and eight thinners showed that 14 of 15 estimated flash values differed from the measured flash point by less than the reproducibility of ASTM D 3278-78., INTRODUCTION Many thinners used in the coatings industry contain mixtures of oxygenated and hydrocarbon solvents and petroleum fractions, and some coatings contain such mixtures as the solvent part of the [...]
