Abstract

Cellular networks are envisioned to be a cornerstone in future industrial IoT (IIoT) wireless connectivity in terms of fulfilling the industrial-grade coverage, capacity, robustness, and ultra-responsiveness requirements. This vision has led to verticals-centric service-based architecture in 5G radio access and core networks, with the capabilities to include 5G-AI-Edge ecosystem for computing, intelligence, and flexible deployment and integration options (e.g., centralized and distributed, physical and virtual) while eliminating the privacy/security concerns of mission-critical systems. In this paper, driven by the industrial interest in enabling large-scale wireless IIoT deployments for operational agility, flexible, and cost-efficient production, we present the state-of-the-art 5G architecture, transformative technologies, and recent design trends, which we also selectively supplemented with new results. We also identify several research challenges in these promising design trends that beyond-5G systems must overcome to support rapidly unfolding transition in creating value-centric industrial wireless networks.

Abstract

In this work, we address the problem of jointly optimizing the transmit power and blocklength of a two-users scenario for orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and non-orthogonal (NOMA) access schemes. We formulate an optimization problem to obtain the energy-optimal blocklength and transmit power under ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) reliability and latency constraints. The aim is to minimize the energy consumption at short-blocklength regime. Due to the problem's complexity, we decompose it into two sub-problems for the OMA case, where the base station (BS) employs a 2D search for strong user, and the bisection method for the weak user. On the contrary, we find the sufficient transmit power conditions for NOMA to obtain the feasible solution. Our results show that the minimum required energy increases with the reliability requirement for both the OMA and NOMA, while NOMA consumes more energy than OMA for the same reliability target. Moreover, the results indicate that NOMA reduces latency due to better blocklength utilization compared to OMA when the channel gain disparity between the users is small.

Abstract

Many new narrowband low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) (e.g., LoRaWAN, Sigfox) have opted to use pure ALOHA-like access for its reduced control overhead and asynchronous transmissions. Although asynchronous access reduces the energy consumption of IoT devices, the network performance suffers from high intra-network interference in dense deployments. Contrarily, synchronous access can improve throughput and fairness, but it requires time synchronization. Unfortunately, maintaining synchronization over the narrowband LPWANs wastes channel time and transmission opportunities. In this paper, we propose the use of out-of-band time-dissemination to relatively synchronize LoRa devices and thereby facilitate resource-efficient slotted uplink communication. To this end, we conceptualize and analyze a co-designed synchronization and random access mechanism that can effectively exploit technologies providing limited time accuracy, such as FM radio data system (FM-RDS). While considering the LoRa-specific parameters, we derive the throughput of the proposed mechanism, compare it to a generic synchronous random access using in-band synchronization, and design the communication parameters under time uncertainty. We scrutinize the transmission time uncertainty of a device by introducing a clock error model that accounts for the errors in the synchronization source, local clock, propagation delay, and transceiver's transmission time uncertainty. We characterize the time uncertainty of FM-RDS with hardware measurements and perform simulations to evaluate the proposed solution. The results, presented in terms of success probability, throughput, and fairness for a single-cell scenario, suggest that FM-RDS, despite its poor absolute synchronization, can be used effectively to realize slotted LoRa communication with performance similar to that of more accurate time-dissemination technologies., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, final version to appear in IEEE Internet of Things Journal

Abstract

Although the idea of using wireless links for covering large areas is not new, the advent of LPWANs has recently started changing the game. Simple, robust, narrowband modulation schemes permit the implementation of low-cost radio devices offering high receiver sensitivity, thus improving the overall link budget. The several technologies belonging to the LPWAN family, including the well-known LoRaWAN solution, provide a cost-effective answer to many Internet-of-things (IoT) applications, requiring wireless communication capable of supporting large networks of many devices (e.g., smart metering). Generally, the adopted MAC strategy is based on pure ALOHA, which, among other things, allows to minimize the traffic overhead under constrained duty cycle limitations of the unlicensed bands. Unfortunately, ALOHA suffers from poor scalability, rapidly collapsing in dense networks. This work investigates the design of an improved LoRaWAN MAC scheme based on slotted ALOHA. In particular, the required time dissemination is provided by out-of-band communications leveraging on FM-RDS broadcasting. An experimental setup based on low-cost hardware is used to characterize the obtainable synchronization performance and derive a timing error model. Consequently, improvements in success probability and energy efficiency have been validated by means of simulations in very large networks with up to 10000 nodes. It is shown that the advantage of the proposed scheme over conventional LoRaWAN communication is up to 100% when short update time and large payload are required. Similar results are obtained regarding the energy efficiency improvement, which is close to 100% for relatively short transmission intervals and long message duration; however, due to the additional overhead for listening to the time dissemination messages, efficiency gain can be negative for short-duration messages fastly repeating., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, to appear in IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement

Abstract

The early detection of beam losses and the alarm to the machine protection system in accelerators are crucial for the safe operation of the machine. In the low energy region of the hadron accelerators, only neutrons and photons are produced in the case of a beam loss. However, photons are also emitted by electrons at the RF cavities, becoming a natural background for losses identification. A new kind of beam loss monitors have been conceived to extend the sensitivity to the low energy region of the high intensity hadron accelerators. They are based on Micromegas detectors sensitive to fast neutrons. The appropriate configuration of the Micromegas operating conditions will allow a fast response, a sensitivity to small beam losses and a suppressed sensitivity to photons. In this paper the operation principle and the system developed for the European Spallation Source will be presented, with focus on the results obtained at different irradiation facilities. First time proof of operation in real conditions, with the detection of beam losses, will be also shown with measurements performed at LINAC4 (CERN).

Abstract

The Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) is shown as a required technology to avoid overcrowding of the licensed bands by the increasing cellular traffic. Proposed by 3GPP, LAA uses a Listen Before Talk (LBT) and backoff mechanism similar to Wi-Fi. While many mathematical models have been proposed to study the problem of the coexistence of LAA and Wi-Fi systems, few have tackled the problem of QoS provisioning, and in particular analysed the behaviour of the various classes of priority available in Wi-Fi and LAA. This paper presents a new mathematical model to investigate the performance of different priority classes in coexisting Wi-Fi and LAA networks. Using Discrete Time Markov Chains, we model the saturation throughput of all eight priority classes used by Wi-Fi and LAA. The numerical results show that with the 3GPP proposed parameters, a fair coexistence between Wi-Fi and LAA cannot be achieved. Wi-Fi users in particular suffer a significant degradation of their performance caused by the collision with LAA transmissions which has a longer duration compared to Wi-Fi transmissions.

Abstract

Machine to Machine (M2M) communication networks are expected to connect a large number of power-constrained devices in long range applications with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. Medium access control with QoS support such as the enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) defined by IEEE 802.11e provides traffic differentiation and corresponding priority classes, which guarantees QoS according to the needs of applications. In this paper, we employ a station grouping mechanism for enhancing the scalability of EDCA to handle the massive number of access attempts expected in large M2M networks. Furthermore, we develop a discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) model to analyze the performance of EDCA with station grouping. Using the developed DTMC model, we calculate throughput for each access category as well as for different combinations of grouping and EDCA parameters. The numerical results show that the model can precisely reveal the behavior of EDCA mechanism. Moreover, it is demonstrated that employing the proposed grouping mechanism for EDCA increases the normalized throughput significantly for all classes of priority.

Abstract

Transforming a graphical user interface screenshot created by a designer into computer code is a typical task conducted by a developer in order to build customized software, websites, and mobile applications. In this paper, we show that deep learning methods can be leveraged to train a model end-to-end to automatically reverse engineer user interfaces and generate code from a single input image with over 77% of accuracy for three different platforms (i.e. iOS, Android and web-based technologies).

Abstract

Many applications for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications are characterized by large numbers of devices with sporadic transmissions and subjected to low energy budgets. This work addresses the importance of energy consumption by proposing a new Medium Access Control (MAC) mechanism for improving the energy efficiency of IEEE 802.11ah, a standard targeting M2M communication. We propose to use the features of IEEE 802.11ah MAC to realize a hybrid contention-reservation mechanism for the transmission of uplink traffic. In the proposed mechanism, any device with a buffered packet will first notify the Access Point (AP) during a contention phase before being given a reserved timeslot for the data transmission. We develop a mathematical model to analyse the energy consumption of the proposed mechanism and of IEEE 802.11ah. The results show that for a monitoring scenario, the proposed contentionreservation mechanism reduces the energy consumption for a successful uplink data transmission by up to 55%.

Abstract

full-scale mechanical prototype line was deployed to a depth of 2500 m to test the leak tightness of the electronics containers and the pressure-resistant properties of an electromechanical cable under evaluation for use in the ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope. During a month-long immersion study, line parameter data were taken using miniature autonomous data loggers and shore-based optical time domain reflectometry. Details of the mechanical prototype line, the electromechanical cable and data acquisition are presented. Data taken during the immersion study revealed deficiencies in the pressure resistance of the electromechanical cable terminations at the entry points to the electronics containers. The improvements to the termination, which have been integrated into subsequent detection lines, are discussed. The line also allowed deep-sea acoustic measurements with a prototype hydrophone system. The technical setup of this system is described, and the first results of the data analysis are presented. Abstract

Juvenile localized scleroderma includes different conditions characterized by skin hardening with increased collagen deposition. Although juvenile localized scleroderma is considered a relatively benign disease, lesions may extend through the dermis, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and the underlying bone, leading to significant functional and cosmetic deformities. Furthermore, extracutaneous manifestations are described. We retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 26 patients with severe Juvenile localized scleroderma with particular attention to clinical features, therapy, and long-term outcome. A subgroup of three patients has been further evaluated with infrared thermography. Our findings were consistent with the current literature for demographic, laboratory, and clinical characteristics at disease onset, but, with our patients, the prevalence of extracutaneous manifestations was higher, thus confirming the potential for severe juvenile localized scleroderma to affect organs other than the skin, without increased risk of development toward systemic sclerosis. Correlation between various treatments and clinical endpoint showed that systemic therapy lead to a better outcome: in particular, methotrexate appeared the most effective drug, capable in halting the progression of the disease and sometimes inducing its regression.

Abstract

Neurospin, a neuroscience research centre with very high field MRI equipments, just opened in November 2006 at Saclay by the CEA life science division. One of the imaging systems will require an 11.7 T magnet with a 900 mm warm bore. This magnet is currently under development at CEA Saclay, in collaboration with Siemens Medical Solutions and Alstom Magnets and Superconductors, within the framework of the French-German consortium Iseult/INUMAC (Imaging of Neuro disease Using high field. MAgnetic resonance and Contrastophores). The main aim of the consortium is to promote magnetic resonance and molecular imaging within high magnetic fields. The proposed magnet design is based on conservative options, but definitely unusual construction methods, for an MRI magnet (pancake winding, liquefier, stabilized power supply). These key design points therefore need to be assessed with several prototypes, integrated within a 5 years projected development plan, ending in 2011. The paper will present the objectives of the project as well as the main characteristics of the magnet and its development plan.

To investigate the long-term outcome and prognostic factors of juvenile dermatomyositis (DM) through a multinational, multicenter study.Methods. Patients consisted of inception cohorts seen between 1980 and 2004 in 27 centers in Europe and Latin America. Predictor variables were sex, continent, ethnicity, onset year, onset age, onset type, onset manifestations, course type, disease duration, and active disease duration. Outcomes were muscle strength/endurance, continued disease activity, cumulative damage, muscle damage, cutaneous damage, calcinosis, lipodystrophy, physical function, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL).Results. A total of 490 patients with a mean disease duration of 7.7 years were included. At the cross-sectional visit, 41.2-52.8% of patients, depending on the instrument used, had reduced muscle strength/endurance, but less than 10% had severe impairment. Persistently active disease was recorded in 41.2-60.5% of the patients, depending on the activity measure used. Sixty-nine percent of the patients had cumulative damage. The frequency of calcinosis and lipodystrophy was 23.6% and 9.7%, respectively. A total of 40.7% of the patients had decreased functional ability, but only 6.5% had major impairment. Only a small fraction had decreased HRQOL. A chronic course, either polycyclic or continuous, consistently predicted a poorer outcome. Mortality rate was 3.1%.Conclusion. This study confirms the marked improvement in functional outcome of juvenile DM when compared with earlier literature. However, many patients had continued disease activity and cumulative damage at followup. A chronic course was the strongest predictor of poor prognosis. These findings highlight the need for treatment strategies that enable a better control of disease activity over time and the reduction of nonreversible damage. Abstract

A multiconductor-transmission-line (MTL) model of the high-voltage dc power bus of electric vehicles (composed of two shielded cables running above a metallic ground) is proposed for the prediction of the propagation of conducted electromagnetic noise up to 100 MHz. Model parameters are computed by knowing the geometry of the system and the permittivity of dielectric materials. The proposed model is validated versus measurements. Finally, an approximate lumped-parameter circuit representation is also derived from the general MTL formulation, which is specifically useful for the implementation of the model in a SPICE circuit solver.

Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope is being constructed in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of a large three-dimensional array of photo-multiplier tubes. The data acquisition system of the detector takes care of the digitisation of the photo-multiplier tube signals, data transport, data filtering, and data storage. The detector is operated using a control program interfaced with all elements. Abstract

ANTARES is a neutrino telescope being deployed in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of a three dimensional array of photomultiplier tubes that can detect the Cherenkov light induced by charged particles produced in the interactions of neutrinos with the surrounding medium. High angular resolution can be achieved, in particular when a muon is produced, provided that the Cherenkov photons are detected with sufficient timing precision. Considerations of the intrinsic time uncertainties stemming from the transit time spread in the photomultiplier tubes and the mechanism of transmission of light in sea water lead to the conclusion that a relative time accuracy of the order of 0.5 ns is desirable. Accordingly, different time calibration systems have been developed for the ANTARES telescope. In this article, a system based on Optical Beacons, a set of external and well-controlled pulsed light sources located throughout the detector, is described. This calibration system takes into account the optical properties of sea water, which is used as the detection volume of the ANTARES telescope. Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope, to be immersed depth in the Mediterranean Sea, will consist of a 3 dimensional matrix of 900 large area photomultiplier tubes housed in pressure resistant glass spheres. The selection of the optimal photomultiplier was a critical step for the project and required an intensive phase of tests and developments carried out in close collaboration with the main manufacturers worldwide. 21. Attitudes on Pain Change When Acute Pain Services are Introduced

Abstract

Context: Acute Pain Services (APS) are becoming available in many hospitals worldwide because of the numerous advantages for patients and healthcare systems. Whereas data show that patients benefit from APS in terms of pain relief and satisfaction, little is still known about the attitudes of healthcare professionals and how they may change when APS are introduced in their clinical work. Objective: This survey evaluates attitudes on pain and highlights the main differences amongst staff working in wards with and without a pain service within the same hospital. Design: Questionnaire survey. Setting: A provincial Italian hospital. Results: Of the 122 questionnaires sent, 95 (78%) were returned. The majority of respondents (81%) agreed that effective pain control improves patient outcome and 78% believed anaesthetists should decide over postoperative pain management and be involved in pain issues even when patients are discharged to the surgical wards (88%). A large number of respondents (68%) thought patients should expect some pain after surgery. A good knowledge of the APS was reported and personnel working with the APS showed to know more about it. Pain measurement and recording is still not well addressed in the clinical practice (only 42% record pain scores) especially in the group of those not working with the APS. Conclusion: Small hospitals still need to implement APS in their clinical settings, and develop more concern on pain issues for healthcare professionals who may change their attitudes, increase their knowledge and improve their practice when APS are introduced.

Abstract

In perspective of the incoming CO 2 emission regulation, the on board heat management is becoming even more relevant to assure the engine performance improvement minimizing the impact on the vehicle lay out, cooling drag and cost. The paper highlights the benefit of dual level heat rejection system where, the front module constituted by heat exchangers carrying different fluids (e.g. water-glycol, air, refrigerant fluid…), is replaced by a two coolant-to-air exchangers module and where the charge air cooler and condenser are liquid cooled. This approach allows to review the engine bay design allowing a deeper integration level: the charge air cooler can be integrated in the air intake manifold while the condenser can be placed near the compressor minimising the tube lengths and refrigerant charge. In addition, the coolant thermal inertia reduces the temperature fluctuations of the engine intake air temperature. These effects compensates the introduction of an intermediate temperature level allowing to reduce the overall vehicle fuel consumption in real use and could enable the front aerodynamic improvement. The experimental results show that it is possible to reduce the fuel consumption of up to the 4% when the air conditioning is operating and to reduce the refrigerant charge of up to the 30%. In the paper is described the system concept and the experimental results related to an application on a Fiat 500 are discussed highlighting the benefits and the open issues.

Abstract

This paper summarizes experience with plasma-exchange therapy for neurological diseases at the Saronno hospital. Most treatments were performed by discontinuous flow centrifugation, but membrane plasma separation and cascade filtration were also employed. Eighty-five patients with demyelinating diseases of the peripheral nervous system (Guillain-Barre syndrome, immune complex polyneuropathies, paraneoplastic polyneuropathies), demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system (multiple sclerosis, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis), dermatopolymyositis and myasthenia gravis have been treated so far. Particular attention is paid to the combination of plasmapheresis with lymphocytapheresis and immuno-suppressive drugs. This therapeutic approach appears to bring about dramatic and sustained improvement in most patients with neurological diseases, thus altering their natural course.

Abstract

Rebound after plasmapheresis is thought to be due to enhanced antibody and/or immune complex production. To prevent rebound a combination of steroids and immunosuppressive drugs has been used: lymphocytapheresis was employed in most patients, for not more than 10 sessions. 50 patients with myasthenia gravis, inflammatory myopathy, chronic dysimmune polyneuropathy and immune complex polyneuropathy have been treated and long-lasting benefits obtained in 35 patients. Rebound effects were observed only when cytotoxic drugs were not given or discontinued too soon. 8 patients who had been treated by plasmapheresis combined with steroids alone, after some recurrences of their disease, were switched to cytotoxic drugs, steroids and lymphocytapheresis combined with plasma exchange: in this group 7 patients eventually gained long lasting remissions. Our clinical experience strongly supports the hypothesis of a synergy between plasmapheresis and immuno-suppressive measures.
