Abstract

Introduction The principal voltage-gated Na+ channel, NaV1.5 governs heart excitability and conduction. NaV1.5 dysregulation is responsible for ventricular arrhythmias and subsequent sudden cardiac death (SCD) in post-infarct hearts. The transcription factor Meis1 performs a significant role in determining differentiation fate and regenerative capability of cardiomyocytes. However, the functions of Meis1 in ischemic arrhythmias following myocardial infarction (MI) are still largely undefined. Objectives Here we set out to study whether Meis1 could act as a key regulator to mediate cardiac Na+ channels and its underlying mechanisms. Methods Heart-specific Meis1 overexpression was established by AAV9 virus injection in C57BL/6 mice. The QRS duration, the incidence of ventricular arrhythmias and cardiac conduction velocity were evaluated by ECG, programmed electrical stimulation and optical mapping techniques respectively. The conventional patch clamp technique was performed to explore the INa characteristics of isolated mouse ventricular myocytes. In vitro, Meis1 was also overexpressed in hypoxic-treated neonatal cardiomyocytes. The analysis of immunoblotting and immunofluorescence were used to detect the changes in the expression of NaV1.5 in each group. Results We found that forced expression of Meis1 rescued the prolongation of QRS complex, produced anti-arrhythmic activity and improved epicardial conduction velocity in infarcted mouse hearts. In terms of mechanisms, the cardiac electrophysiological function of mice can be ameliorated by the recovery of Meis1, which is characterized by the restoration of INa current density and NaV1.5 expression level of cardiomyocytes in the marginal zone of myocardial infarction. Furthermore, the vitro studies showed that Meis1 was also able to rescue hypoxia-induced decreased expression and dysfunction of NaV1.5 in ventricular myocytes. We further revealed that E3 ubiquitin ligase CDC20 led to the ubiquitination and degradation of Meis1, which blocked the transcriptional regulation of SCN5A by Meis1 and ultimately led to the electrophysiological remodeling in ischemic-hypoxic cardiomyocytes. Conclusion CDC20 mediated ubiquitination of Meis1 to govern the transcription of SCN5A and cardiac electrical conductance in mouse cardiomyocytes. This finding uncovers a new mechanism of NaV1.5 dysregulation in infarcted heart, and provides new therapeutic strategies for malignant arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death following MI.

Abstract

With the rapid advance of Internet of Things (IoTs), it is difficult for cloud-centric computing to meet the requirements of low latency and ease of use. As an open and distributed system, edge computing integrates computing, networking, storage, and applications. It provides intelligent services on the edge of an IoT. The edge network is comprised of various wireless and wired networks, and the computing and storage resources of edge nodes are limited. These conditions make the edge network expose to a variety of cyber attacks. Additionally, it is difficult for an IoT edge node to support large-scale network data collection and detection for IoT security. Although big data-enabled intrusion detection algorithms can ensure the high accuracy of intrusion detection systems, it is stressful for resource-limited edge nodes to implement those algorithms in IoTs. Motivated by these challenges, we propose an intelligent intrusion detection algorithm implemented by big data mining based on fuzzy rough set, Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). In our method, we first propose a fuzzy rough set-based algorithm to perform feature selection for big data via IoTs. Then, we take advantage of the efficient feature extraction capabilities of CNN for implementing intrusion detection based on selected features. Furthermore, after combining CNN and GAN, we propose an intelligent algorithm to realize intrusion detection in a variety of scenarios. Finally, the proposed method is compared with existing methods for evaluation. Simulation results show that our method has up to 4% higher accuracy than existing methods.

Abstract

With the massive deployment of the Internet of things (IoT) devices, many data analysis applications emerge for the large amount of data accumulated by IoT. Federated learning (FedL) on IoT devices is an appealing mode to train a precise data analysis model. However, existing federated learning schemes either take expensive computation costs (e.g., public key cryptographic operations) or a large number of interactions among participants. Obviously, these schemes are unsuitable for IoT devices due to the limited computational and communication resources. In this work, we propose a lightweight privacy-preserving federated learning scheme for IoT devices. To protect the privacy of individual local data, we add masks to intervening parameters. An effective secret sharing scheme is adopted to ensure that masks can be eliminated accurately. Considering that FedL involves multiple iterations and mask generation for each iteration costs a large number of interactions among users for privacy guarantee, we also design a secure mask reusing mechanism for large-scale FedL tasks. We prove that our scheme is secure against the honest-but-curious model. In addition, we also expand our scheme to deal with the collusion attack. Extensive experiments on real IoT devices demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of our work.

Abstract

We propose an unsupervised cross-view facial expression adaptation network(UCFEAN) to simultaneously generate and recognize cross-view facial expressions in images in an unsupervised manner. The main idea of UCFEAN is to convert the unsupervised domain adaptation between two image spaces with different appearance into semi-supervised learning(SSL) in feature spaces with the same semantic content. The cyclic image generation of cross-view facial expressions based on the generative adversarial network(GAN) is carried out to project unlabeled target images and labelled source images to the corresponding feature spaces with the same semantic content. This helps realize the unsupervised feature learning of the target image. Labels of facial expressions represented in the projected target features can then be learned using the projected source features, because the distributions of the projected features in the two domains are close enough for knowledge transfer by using SSL. Three techniques are developed to train UCFEAN in an effective and stable manner. Extensive experiments are conducted to evaluate the UCFEAN on two multi-view facial expression image databases including RaFD and Multi-PIE. The results show that the proposed method can generate realistic target images of the facial expression and recognize cross-view facial expressions with high precision.

Abstract

To reduce the cost of human and material resources and improve the collaborations among medical systems, research laboratories and insurance companies for healthcare researches and commercial activities, electronic medical records (EMRs) have been proposed to shift from paperwork to friendly shareable electronic records. To take advantage of EMRs efficiently and reduce the cost of local storage, EMRs are usually outsourced to the remote cloud for sharing medical data with authorized users. However, cloud service providers are untrustworthy. In this paper, we propose an efficient, secure, and flexible EMR sharing system by introducing a novel cryptosystem called dual-policy revocable attribute-based encryption and tamper resistance blockchain technology. Our proposed system enables EMRs to be shared at a fine-grained level and allows data users to detect any unauthorized manipulation. Moreover, the key generation center can revoke malicious users without affecting the honest users. We provide the formal security model as well as the concrete scheme with security analysis. The experimental simulation and experimental analysis of our proposed scheme demonstrate that our proposed system has superior performances to the most relevant solutions.

Abstract

The fast and high response detection of neurotoxic H2S is of great importance for the environment. In this paper, directly electrospinning technology on the ceramic tube is developed to improve the response of H2S detector based on superlong SnO2 fibers. The submillimeter continuous fibers are deposited directly on ceramic tubes by in-situ electrospinning method and can keep morphology of fibers during calcination. By employing this technology, CuO-doped SnO2 fiber H2S detectors are fabricated, and 10% atom CuO-doped SnO2 H2S detector shows the highest response of 40 toward 1 ​ppm ​H2S at 150 ​°C while the response is only 3.6 for the H2S detector prepared in traditional route. In addition, the in-situ electrospinning H2S detectors show faster response and recovery compared to the H2S detectors fabricated by the conventional way. The high and fast response of H2S detectors based on in-situ electrospinning can be ascribed to the continuous fiber structure and CuO modification. The present in-situ electrospinning technology may provide a new strategy for the development of other gas-detectors and bio-detectors with fast and high response.

Abstract

In this article, we study a multiproduct multiperiod production planning problem faced by a cash-strapped manufacturer, who utilizes inventory-based financing (IBF) to capture additional demand during peak season, which otherwise will not be met due to cash shortage. Each product has a unique selling season and its production incurs a significant setup cost. We formulate the problem as an integer program and show the special case with one product is NP-hard. By exploiting the inherent structure of three distinct but related decisions, i.e., the production, financing, and working capital allocation decisions, we develop a Lagrangian relaxation-based branch-and-bound procedure to solve the model. Through a series of numerical experiments using real data, this article presents managerial insights into how the manufacturer's optimal production plan could differ with and without IBF. In an optimal plan, we show the profit maximizing strategy for the cash-strapped manufacturer is to overstock and pledge inventories to secure more loans prior to peak demand periods.

Abstract

In this work, we study an important task in location-based services, namely Personalized Route Recommendation (PRR). Given a road network, the PRR task aims to generate user-specific route suggestions for replying to users' route queries. A classic approach is to adapting search algorithms to construct pathfinding-like solutions. These methods typically focus on reducing search space with suitable heuristic strategies. For these search algorithms, heuristic strategies are often handcrafted, which are not flexible to work in complicated task settings. In this paper, we propose to improve search algorithms with neural networks for solving the PRR task based on the widely used A* algorithm. Our model consists of two components. First, we employ attention-based Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) to model the cost from the source to the candidate location by incorporating useful context information. Second, we propose to use an estimation network for predicting the cost from a candidate location to the destination. The two components are integrated in a principled way for deriving a more accurate cost of a candidate location for the A* algorithm. Extensive experiment results on three real-world datasets have shown the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed model.

9. Reducing catheter related bloodstream infection risk of infant with a prophylactic antibiotic therapy before removing peripherally inserted central catheter: A retrospective study

Abstract

Purpose This study examined the efficacy of prescribing antibiotics, specifically a single dose of vancomycin, in reducing the incidence of culture-positive and culture-negative sepsis prior to the removal of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). Materials and methods We retrospectively reviewed charts of infants who had PICCs in a tertiary level hospital during the period from 2010 to 2019. The incidence of post-catheter removal clinical sepsis between the groups with or without antibiotics was compared. The antibiotic group was defined by receiving a single dose of vancomycin or any other antibiotic prior to line removal. Results We enrolled 585 PICC removal episodes in 546 infants for analysis. Antibiotics were given prior to removal in 257 cases (43.9%) and not given prior to removal in 328 cases (56.1%). There were 13 episodes of post-catheter removal clinical sepsis detected within 72 h (2.2%), 2 of which were culture-positive (0.3%). A 9.3-fold decrease in the odds for clinical sepsis was observed in the antibiotic group (p = 0.01). The incidence of post-catheter removal sepsis was decreased by a single prophylactic dose of vancomycin (p = 0.02), whereas the use of other antibiotics showed no effect (p = 0.35). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that comorbidities with gastrointestinal diseases (p = 0.01), PICC insertion sites in the scalp and neck (p = 0.04), and no vancomycin administration prior to line removal (p = 0.02) were independent risk factors for subsequent clinical sepsis. Conclusion A single prophylactic dose of vancomycin prior to PICC line removal might reduce clinical sepsis events in infants.

Abstract

The demand for high-density, high-efficiency bi-directional battery chargers is driven by the fast development of energy storage system in renewable energy system, micro-grid, and transportation electrification. Isolated dc-dc converter that interfaces a battery with a variable voltage range is one of the critical components. Input-parallel output-series (IPOS) partial power (PP) converter is considered a promising high-efficiency, high density solution because only a fraction of power is processed via multi-stage converters to regulate the output voltage. However, due to the tight coupling between two dc transformers (DCXs), the design of PP converter is complicated. To solve this issue, a design procedure for a bi-directional soft-switching resonant type PP converter is proposed. In the parameters design part, a decoupled design method is proposed to simplify the DCXs design. With this method, two DCXs can be designed separately, and the typical optimization method can be easily applied. As for the hardware design part, to minimize the ac loop inductance and resistance, a 2-directions (2-D) flux cancelation method and an “intra-leaving” winding structure are proposed for circuit layout and high-frequency transformer to obtain high operation efficiency and power density. Finally, the whole design procedure is verified by an 18 kW rated, 25 kW peak, prototype operating at 500 kHz. The realized PP converter features a peak efficiency of 98. 8% and a power density of 142 W/in3. This article is accompanied by two videos demonstrating the dynamic voltage regulation test and the efficiency measurement.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Among patients with stable coronary disease and moderate or severe ischemia, whether clinical outcomes are better in those who receive an invasive intervention plus medical therapy than in those who receive medical therapy alone is uncertain. METHODS: We randomly assigned 5179 patients with moderate or severe ischemia to an initial invasive strategy (angiography and revascularization when feasible) and medical therapy or to an initial conservative strategy of medical therapy alone and angiography if medical therapy failed. The primary outcome was a composite of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, or hospitalization for unstable angina, heart failure, or resuscitated cardiac arrest. A key secondary outcome was death from cardiovascular causes or myocardial infarction. RESULTS: Over a median of 3.2 years, 318 primary outcome events occurred in the invasive-strategy group and 352 occurred in the conservative-strategy group. At 6 months, the cumulative event rate was 5.3% in the invasive-strategy group and 3.4% in the conservative-strategy group (difference, 1.9 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.8 to 3.0); at 5 years, the cumulative event rate was 16.4% and 18.2%, respectively (difference, -1.8 percentage points; 95% CI, -4.7 to 1.0). Results were similar with respect to the key secondary outcome. The incidence of the primary outcome was sensitive to the definition of myocardial infarction; a secondary analysis yielded more procedural myocardial infarctions of uncertain clinical importance. There were 145 deaths in the invasive-strategy group and 144 deaths in the conservative-strategy group (hazard ratio, 1.05; 95% CI, 0.83 to 1.32). CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with stable coronary disease and moderate or severe ischemia, we did not find evidence that an initial invasive strategy, as compared with an initial conservative strategy, reduced the risk of ischemic cardiovascular events or death from any cause over a median of 3.2 years. The trial findings were sensitive to the definition of myocardial infarction that was used. Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether matrine can affect the phenotypes and functional maturation of dendritic cells (DC), and to secrete many cytokines, as well as the cytotoxic T lymophocyte (CTL) specific killing effect induced by gastric carcinoma dendritic cells vaccine in vitro. Materials and methods: The experimental groups consisted of three concentrations of matrine (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/mL). The DC maturation was detected by flow cytometry. The proliferation of T cells was detected by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) method. The secretions of cytokines by CTLs were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The specific killing capacity of CTLs to target MKN45 gastric cancer cells was detected by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay. Results: The results showed that matrine could increase the expressions of CD86 and CD83 in a dose-dependent manner. Matrine could promote T cell proliferation (P). Moreover, matrine also significantly increased the levels of interferon-γ (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-12p70 (IL-12p70), respectively (P). The therapeutic vaccination with DCs vaccine treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) plus matrine resulted in improved killing effect as compared to that observed with DCs treated with LPS alone (P). Conclusion: These findings define matrine as an immune adjuvant that enhances the DC activation and demonstrate a new pharmacological approach to improve the therapeutic effect of autogenous DC vaccines.

Abstract

Introduction The standard approach to thyroidectomy is a collar incision via the anterior neck, and the neck scar has always been a source of worry for patients. Acceptable wound cosmetology has become a focus for thyroid surgeons. Objective To verify the effectiveness and cosmetic results of thyroidectomy through a lateral supraclavicular incision. Methods 180 patients were randomly divided into two groups: a lateral supraclavicular approach and a conventional transcervical approach. The main outcomes included incision length, intraoperative blood loss, operative time, total drainage volume, hospitalization expense, early postoperative pain measured by visual analog scale, infection, and perceived cosmetic outcome. Results There were no statistical significances between the two groups in terms of age, gender, nodule size, intraoperative blood loss, operative time, total drainage volume, hospital expense and postoperative complications, whereas there were significant differences in terms of incision length (5.2 ± 1.04 cm vs. 6.9 ± 1.14 cm, p < 0.05). Conclusions The lateral supraclavicular incision is a safe and feasible approach for thyroidectomy. Compared with conventional approach, it provides a better cosmetic result. Resumo Introdução A abordagem padrão para tireoidectomia é uma incisão em colar na face anterior do pescoço; a cicatriz no pescoço sempre foi uma fonte de preocupação para os pacientes; consequentemente, a cosmetologia aceitável da ferida tornou‐se um foco de atenção para os cirurgiões de cabeça e pescoço. Objetivos Verificar a eficácia e os resultados cosméticos da tireoidectomia por meio de incisão supraclavicular lateral. Método Foram divididos aleatoriamente 180 pacientes em dois grupos: um grupo supraclavicular lateral (Grupo LS) e outro transcervical convencional (Grupo TC). Os desfechos principais incluíram comprimento da incisão, perda de sangue intraoperatória, tempo cirúrgico, volume total de drenagem, despesas hospitalares, dor no pós‐operatório imediato medida através de escala visual analógica, infecção e resultado cosmético percebido. Resultados Não houve significância estatística entre os dois grupos em termos de idade, sexo, tamanho do nódulo, perda sanguínea intraoperatória, tempo cirúrgico, volume total de drenagem, custo hospitalar e complicações pós‐operatórias, mas houve diferença significante em termos de comprimento da incisão (5,2 ± 1,04 cm vs. 6,9 ± 1,14 cm, p < 0,05). Conclusão A incisão supraclavicular lateral é uma abordagem segura e viável para tireoidectomia. Em comparação com a abordagem convencional, oferece um melhor resultado cosmético.

Abstract

A privacy-preserving data analytics system enables a cloud user to perform the distributed job in a secure manner such that the data privacy can be guaranteed during the cloud-outsourced computation. However, many SGX-based solutions are vulnerable to some side-channel attacks, including the access pattern leakage from both network and memory. Several data-oblivious algorithms with full obliviousness have been proposed in the literature, but they are impractical to be used in the cloud due to the expensive computational overhead. In this paper, we propose a DPSpark system with the security defined in a notion of (,)-differentially private obliviousness ((,)-DPO), which relaxes full obliviousness to enable an efficiency improvement. Based on this definition, we present a perturbation-shuffle-analysis (PSA) computing architecture and design several typical differentially oblivious operators. In further, we optimize the system efficiency by reducing the number of oblivious shuffles and choosing an appropriate privacy budget. Finally, we benchmark the system in different parameters. The experimental results show that DPSpark significantly outperforms two state-of-the-art solutions, only with 10.1-85.4% additional overhead performing an SGX-based data analysis application.

Abstract

Nowadays, online spamming has already been a remarkable threat to contents security of Internet of Things (IoT). Due to constant technical progress, online spamming activities have been more and more concealed. This brings much fuzziness to spammer detection scenarios, yielding the issue of fuzzy detection of spammers. Although existing detection techniques for spammers utilized idea of deep learning, they still ignore to release power of label spaces. As real nature about a user may be usually fuzzy, but the label annotated for a user is always certain. To remedy such gap, this paper proposes a label smoothing-based fuzzy detection method for spammers (Fuz-Spam). First of all, deep representation is still utilized to deeply fuse features, which acts as the foundation of neural computing. On this basis, generative adversarial learning is introduced to transform previous label spaces into distributed forms. In addition, two groups of experiments are carried out on two real-world datasets for evaluation. The results demonstrate that the Fuz-Spam improves identification efficiency about 10% to 20% than previous ones, and that the Fuz-Spam is endowed with proper stability.

17. HPSTOS: High-Performance and Scalable Traffic Optimization Strategy for Mixed Flows in Data Center Networks

Abstract

In data center networks, traffic needs to be distributed among different paths using traffic optimization strategies for mixed flows. Most of the existing strategies consider either distributed or centralized mechanisms to optimize the latency of mice flows or the throughput of elephant flows. However, low network performance and scalability issues are intrinsic limitations of both strategies. In addition, the current elephant flow detection methods are inefficient. In this paper, we propose a high-performance and scalable traffic optimization strategy (HPSTOS) based on a hybrid approach that leverages the advantages of both centralized and distributed mechanisms. HPSTOS improves the efficiency of elephant flow detection through sampling and flow-table identification. HPSTOS guarantees preferential transmission of mice flows using priority scheduling and adjusts their transmission rate by coding-based congestion control on the end-host, reducing their latency. Additionally, HPSTOS schedules elephant flows by cost-aware dynamic flow scheduling on a centralized controller to improve their throughput. The controller handles only elephant flows, which constitutes the minority of the flows, allowing effective scalability. Evaluations show that HPSTOS outperforms existing schemes by realizing efficient elephant flow detection and improving network performance and scalability.

Abstract

Most of existing mobile edge computing (MEC) studies consider the remote cloud server as a special edge server, the opportunity of edge-cloud collaboration has not been well exploited. We propose a dependency-aware offloading scheme in MEC with edge-cloud cooperation under task dependency constraints. Each mobile device has a limited budget and has to determine which sub-task should be computed locally or should be sent to the edge or remote cloud. We formulate two NP-hard task finishing time minimization sub-problems. We then devise one greedy algorithm with approximation ratio of ${1+\epsilon}$ for the first mode with edge-cloud cooperation without edge-edge cooperation. Then we design an efficient greedy algorithm for the second mode, considering both edge-cloud and edge-edge cooperations. Extensive simulation results show that for the first mode, the proposed greedy algorithm achieves near optimal performance for typical task topologies. On average, it outperforms the modified Hermes benchmark algorithm by about 23%~43.6% in terms of application finishing time with given budgets. By further exploiting collaborations among edge servers in the second cooperation mode, the proposed algorithm helps to achieve over 20.3% average performance gain on the application finishing time over the first mode under various scenarios. Real-world experiments comply with simulation results.

Abstract

For multimodal representation learning, traditional black-box approaches often fall short of extracting interpretable multilayer hidden structures, which contribute to visualize the connections between different modalities at multiple semantic levels. To extract interpretable multimodal latent representations and visualize the hierarchial semantic relationships between different modalities, based on deep topic models, we develop a novel multimodal Poisson gamma belief network (mPGBN) that tightly couples the observations of different modalities via imposing sparse connections between their modality-specific hidden layers. To alleviate the time-consuming Gibbs sampler adopted by traditional topic models in the testing stage, we construct a Weibull-based variational inference network (encoder) to directly map the observations to their latent representations, and further combine it with the mPGBN (decoder), resulting in a novel multimodal Weibull variational autoencoder (MWVAE), which is fast in out-of-sample prediction and can handle large-scale multimodal datasets. Qualitative evaluations on bimodal data consisting of image-text pairs show that the developed MWVAE can successfully extract expressive multimodal latent representations for downstream tasks like missing modality imputation and multimodal retrieval. Further extensive quantitative results demonstrate that both MWVAE and its supervised extension sMWVAE achieve state-of-the-art performance on various multimodal benchmarks.

Abstract

Sequential recommendation aims to identify and recommend the next few items for a user that the user is most likely to purchase/review, given the user's purchase/rating trajectories. It becomes an effective tool to help users select favorite items from a variety of options. In this manuscript, we developed hybrid associations models (HAM) to generate sequential recommendations using three factors: 1) users long-term preferences, 2) sequential, high-order and low-order association patterns in the users most recent purchases/ratings, and 3) synergies among those items. HAM uses simplistic pooling to represent a set of items in the associations, and element-wise product to represent item synergies of arbitrary orders. We compared HAM models with the most recent, state-of-the-art methods on six public benchmark datasets in three different experimental settings. Our experimental results demonstrate that HAM models significantly outperform the state of the art in all the experimental settings, with an improvement as much as 46.6%. In addition, our run-time performance comparison in testing demonstrates that HAM models are much more efficient than the state-of-the-art methods, and are able to achieve significant speedup as much as 139.7 folds.

Abstract

Mobile social networks include a large number of social members who forward messages cooperatively. However, spammers post links to viruses and advertisements, or follow a large number of users, which produces many misleading messages in mobile social networks. In this paper, we propose an adaptive social spammer detection (ASSD) model. We build a spammer classifier by using a small number of labeled patterns and some unlabeled patterns. The prediction accuracy is high compared with some conventional supervised learning methods. Moreover, the time and energy required to label the identity of social members are reduced by applying ASSD. Because social spammers frequently change their behavior to deceive the spammer detection model, an incremental learning method is designed to update the spammer detection model adaptively, without retraining. We evaluate ASSD by comparing it with other supervised and semi-supervised machine learning methods using the Social Honeypot Dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms the baseline methods in terms of recall and precision. Additionally, ASSD maintains a high detection accuracy by adaptively updating the model with newly generated social media data.

As a typical big data representative, the information of global Cellular Signal Strength (CSS), defined as the signal power received by mobile phones, plays an important role in geographic flow analysis, because the density of such information can reflect the urbanization variables such as population, gross domestic product, built-up area, electric power consumption, and etc. Despite the importance, the real-time analysis of global CSS distribution remains a challenging problem due to the large data scale. In this paper, a Display-driven Computing (DisDC) technique is designed and applied to provide efficient large scale interactive CSS visualization, generating results by calculating the value of each pixel that directly for display that can dramatically improve system capacity in big data handling. Specifically, we present an efficient CSS measurement algorithm, which introduces spatial indexes and a corresponding query strategy; besides, an optimized parallel computing architecture is proposed to ensure the ability of real-time visualization. Experiments show that our approach obviously outperforms traditional methods and is capable of handling more than 40 million base stations in real-time. Abstract

Abstract: Background: Long noncoding RNAs (LncRNAs) represent a large category of functional RNA molecules that play a significant role in human cancers. lncRNAs can be genes modulators to affect the biological process of multiple cancers. Methods: Here, we developed a computational framework that uses lncRNA-mRNA network and mutations in individual genes of 9 cancers from TCGA to prioritize cancer lncRNA modulators. Our method screened risky cancer lncRNA regulators based on integrated multiple lncRNA functional networks and 3 calculation methods in network. Results: Validation analyses revealed that our method was more effective than prioritization based on a single lncRNA network. This method showed high predictive performance and the highest ROC score was 0.836 in breast cancer. It’s worth noting that we found that 5 lncRNAs scores were abnormally high and these lncRNAs appeared in 9 cancers. By consulting the literatures, these 5 lncRNAs were experimentally supported lncRNAs. Analyses of prioritizing lncRNAs reveal that these lncRNAs are enriched in various cancer-related biological processes and pathways. Conclusions: Together, these results demonstrated the ability of this method identifying candidate lncRNA molecules and improved insights into the pathogenesis of cancer.

Abstract

Massive physical devices are deployed in the industrial Internet of Things (IoT) to collect ambiance data while heavy storage and communication cost are imposed on these IoT devices. To overcome this constraint, cloud-assisted technologies are introduced to store and manage the collected data. In order to protect data quality and security, encryption is required before uploading data to remote clouds. Consequently, search function is added to cloud services to find the specific data. However, traditional data searching schemes are constructed in user-oriented systems, where the search function is mainly involved with the relationship between data and users rather than data and devices. As a result, traditional search schemes are not suitable to find special IoT devices. On the other hand, the status of these devices is described by many attributes, e.g., temperature, clean water storage, and machine speed in an early warning system for industrial sewage disposal equipment. Hence, multi-keyword conjunctive queries for partial attributes should be introduced so as to find the target device more accurately and more efficiently. To address these challenges, we propose a new universal device-oriented keyword searchable encryption scheme for cloud-assisted IoT in this paper. Furthermore, the functions of a single and conjunctive keyword search are maintained to handle the device search requirement of partial attributes. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the proposed scheme. Experimental results show that our scheme has excellent performance because of the lightweight index and query trapdoor.

Abstract

The SLAM problem in dynamic scenes is regarded as a challenge. This article proposes a novel SLAM framework for dynamic environments, which combines neural network and motion information of dynamic objects, making the system more adaptable to dynamic scenes. Specifically, we adopt a fast object detection network, tightly couple the results of the object detection with the geometric information in the SLAM system. Then the feature point extracted from the image is associated with a dynamic probability. By utilizing the feature points which tend to be static, the localization result can be greatly improved in dynamic environments. We perform the experiments both on the public data set and the real environment. The result can demonstrate that the proposed method greatly improves the localization accuracy in a dynamic environment. An open-source version of the source code is available.

Abstract

The image-based virtual illumination technology directly changes the illumination effect of objects on the image. It does not require complex light propagation simulation calculations, it is an image-based rendering technology. The image mainly relies on the imaging of the visual sensor, and uses the virtual illumination technology of the image to illuminate the image obtained by the visual sensor. This is a new cross-cutting direction in computer vision, virtual reality and other fields. Face Illumination Swapping via Dense Landmark and Semantic Parsing is a major branch. Keeping the geometrical features of the target images and relighting the entire image instead of the face area are problems to be solved in the research. This paper based on the three-dimensional model to analyze the illumination information of the face images and re-render the illumination of the target face, and finally achieves the illumination swap between the two face images. We designed and implemented a 3DDFA-based face image illumination transfer method. First, 3DDFA is used to reconstruct the target face image. Estimate the surface normal and albedo. Then align and fill the surface normal and face parsing to illuminate the face image for light rendering and illumination transfer of the face images. Finally, the illumination analysis and re-rendering of face images based on 3DDFA are expanded to achieve the swap of illumination between face images. Experimental results show that this method can generate good effects of face image illumination transmission and swap while keeping the geometric features of the target images.

Abstract

Recently, Age of Information (AoI) has become an important metric to evaluate the freshness of information, and studies on minimizing AoI in wireless networks have drawn extensive attention. In mobile edge networks, the change of critical levels for distinct information is important for users’ decision making, especially when merely partial observations are available. However, existing researches have not addressed that issue yet. To tackle the above challenges, we first establish the system model, in which the information freshness is quantified by the changes of its critical levels. We formulate the Age-of-Critical-Information (AoCI) minimization issue as an optimization problem, with the purpose of minimizing the average relative AoCI of mobile clients to help them make timely decisions. Then, we propose an information-aware heuristic algorithm that can reach optimal performance with full obsevations in an offline manner. For online scheduling, an imitation learning-based scheduling approach is designed to decide update preferences for mobile clients under partial observations, where policies obtained by the above heuristic algorithm are utilized for expert policies. At last, we demonstrate the superiority of our designed algorithm from both theoretical and experimental perspectives.

Abstract

Cloud-based VANETs are designed to enable communication between high-speed vehicles. In such a highly dynamic environment, how to provide secure and anonymous communication service is a challenge. In this paper, we affirmatively address the challenge by proposing a traitor-resistant and dynamic anonymous communication framework (TD-ACF) for cloud-based VANETs. In TD-ACF, each vehicle is represented by a set of attributes and the driving data is transmitted in encrypted form. Therefore, the anonymous authentication and the confidentiality of driving data are achieved. Meanwhile, TD-ACF supports two practical requirements in cloud-based VANETs: the revocation and the traceability of traitor. For the former, TD-ACF can force a vehicle to exit the communication network at any moment. We employ an efficient binary tree algorithm to reduce the size of key updates for revocation from the traditional linear to the logarithmic level. For the latter, we overcome the barrier of the one-to-many relationship between a vehicle and the shared set of attributes to support traitor tracing. In TD-ACF, the Semi-Trusted Cloud (STC) can directly capture and punish a traitor instead of querying all the records in the list of unrevoked vehicles. The theoretical analysis and experimental simulation show that our scheme is feasible and effective.

Abstract

This article presents a programmable multiple frequencies clock generator with a process and temperature compensation circuit design. The proposed clock generator can achieve a stable and wide frequency range output for a single input frequency by using digital control codes as well as process and temperature compensation mechanisms. In our approach, the first step is to adjust the duty-cycle of the input clock by using a digitally controlled pulsewidth modulator (DCPWM) to generate an output clock signal with a duty-cycle of 20% to 80%. Second, the various duty-cycle clock outputs of the DCPWM are integrated by the duty-cycle-to-voltage converter to generate analog voltage signals to control the succeeding voltage-controlled ring oscillator (VCO). Through the use of various control voltages, different VCO output frequencies are generated. Finally, by using the process and temperature compensation circuit, the proposed clock generator can provide a stable and wide frequency range. The proposed chip is fabricated in a 180-nm CMOS process and has an output frequency range of 35–138 MHz at a supply voltage of 0.9 V. At 120 MHz, the power dissipation and rms jitter are 224.3 μW and 7.84 ps, respectively. The active area of the chip is 0.62 mm × 0.76 mm.

Abstract

With the increasing cloud storage service, users can enjoy non-interactive data sharing. Nonetheless, the data owner cannot timely update the shared data all the while. To ensure the timeliness and the authoritative source of the data, some users should be allowed to update the data on behalf of an authoritative data owner without changing data source. However, this allows harmful information to be injected into the data unnoticeably. How to efficiently realize editable cloud-based data sharing supporting malicious user tracing has not been fully explored. To address the problem, we propose a fine-grained and controllably editable cloud-based data sharing scheme with malicious user accountability. The data owner only needs to sign the shared data before uploading it and can specify a fine-grained access control policy about who can update the data and which portions of the data can be updated. The authorized users non-interactively converts signatures of original data into new ones for the updated data, which are indistinguishable from the original signatures. The proposed scheme also support malicious user accountability in the sense that malicious users who post harmful information can be traced. We demonstrate the security and practicality of our scheme via formal security analysis and extensive experiments.

Abstract

Background aims Despite the great advances in immunosuppressive therapy for severe aplastic anemia (SAA), most patients are not completely cured. Haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) has been recommended as an alternative treatment in adult SAA patients. However, haplo-HSCT presents a higher incidence of graft failure and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). The authors designed a combination of haplo-HSCT and umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) for treatment of SAA in adult patients and evaluated its effects. Methods Adult patients (≥18 years) with SAA (N = 25) were given HLA-haploidentical hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) combined with UC-MSCs after a conditioning regimen consisting of busulfan, cyclophosphamide, fludarabine and anti-thymocyte globulin and intensive GVHD prophylaxis, including cyclosporine, basiliximab, mycophenolate mofetil and short-term methotrexate. Additionally, the effects of the protocol in adult SSA patients were compared with those observed in juvenile SAA patients (N = 75). Results All patients achieved myeloid engraftment after haplo-HSCT at a median of 16.12 days (range, 11–26). The median time of platelet engraftment was 28.30 days (range, 13–143). The cumulative incidence of grade II acute GVHD (aGVHD) at day +100 was 32.00 ± 0.91%. No one had grade III–IV aGVHD at day +100. The cumulative incidence of total chronic GVHD was 28.00 ± 0.85%. The overall survival was 71.78 ± 9.05% at a median follow-up of 42.08 months (range, 2.67–104). Promisingly, the protocol yielded a similar curative effect in both young and adult SAA patients. Conclusions The authors’ data suggest that co-transplantation of HLA-haploidentical HSCs and UC-MSCs may provide an effective and safe treatment for adult SAA.

Abstract

Background The present study aimed to evaluate the elimination of three common pollutants (dimethoate, benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) and bisphenol A (BPA) by different physical exercises and to assess the possible factors which could affect the pollutants elimination. Methods A total of 200 individuals who chose different kinds of exercises in accordance to their own wish were recruited. The levels of urinary pollutants were measured using β-glucuronidase hydrolysis followed by a high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry-based method. Results Totally, the levels of dimethoate, BaP and BPA were reduced after physical exercises. However, the elimination of BaP in male was higher than that in female but the elimination of BPA in female was higher than that in male. Multivariate logistic regression showed that the degree of heart rate (HR) change was a protective factor affecting the improvement effect of dimethoate, BaP and BPA while BMI (body mass index) was a risk factor. Nevertheless, sex was a risk factor affecting the improvement of dimethoate and BaP but had a lower efficacy on BPA improvement. Conclusion The present findings indicate that physical exercises can be considered as a novel approach to eliminate pollutants level in human body and can also give suggestions for choosing specific physical exercises to male and female individuals. Moreover, those who are with higher BMI need to lose weight before eliminating pollutant level through physical exercises.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: IL-18 is known as an interferon-inducing factor that belongs to the IL-1 family, and is synthesized as an inactive precursor protein. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to investigate the expression of IL-18, IL-18R, R and IL-18 binding protein (BP) mRNA in various types of human pituitary tumors, such as adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)-producing adenomas and non-function adenomas. METHODS: Pituitary adenoma tissues were obtained during the surgery of 41 patients: nine patients had ACTH-producing pituitary adenomas, nine patients had GH-producing pituitary adenomas, five patients had TSH-producing pituitary adenomas, seven patients had PRL-producing pituitary adenomas, and 11 patients had non-functioning adenomas. The mRNA expression levels of IL-18, IL-18BP, IL-18R and IL-18R were quantified using real-time quantitative PCR. RESULTS: The mRNA expression of IL-18 was significantly higher in ACTH-, GH- and PRL-producing adenomas, when compared to non-function tumors. Similarly, a significantly higher mRNA expression of IL-18BP and IL-18R was observed in ACTH-, GH- and PRL-producing adenomas, when compared with non-functional adenomas. In contrast, no upregulation of IL-18R mRNA was observed in any of the pituitary adenomas. CONCLUSIONS: The mRNA levels of IL-18, IL-18BP and IL-18R are significantly elevated in clinical pituitary tumors, such as ACTH-, GH- and PRL-producing adenomas, when compared to non-functional adenomas. These present results suggest the possibility that IL-18 may be involved in the pathogenesis of pituitary adenoma.

Abstract

Background Aetiology detection is crucial in the diagnosis and treatment of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). However, the detection method needs improvement. In this study, we used Nanopore sequencing to build a quick detection protocol and compared the efficiency of different methods for detecting 7 VAP pathogens. Methods The endotracheal aspirate (ETA) of 83 patients with suspected VAP from Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH) was collected, saponins were used to deplete host genomes, and PCR- or non-PCR-amplified library construction methods were used and compared. Sequence was performed with MinION equipment and local data analysis methods were used for sequencing and data analysis. Results Saponin depletion effectively removed 11 of 12 human genomes, while most pathogenic bacterial genome results showed no significant difference except for S. pneumoniae. Moreover, the average sequence time decreased from 19.6 h to 3.62 h. The non-PCR amplification method and PCR amplification method for library build has a similar average sensitivity (85.8% vs. 86.35%), but the non-PCR amplification method has a better average specificity (100% VS 91.15%), and required less time. The whole method takes 5–6 h from ETA extraction to pathogen classification. After analysing the 7 pathogens enrolled in our study, the average sensitivity of metagenomic sequencing was approximately 2.4 times higher than that of clinical culture (89.15% vs. 37.77%), and the average specificity was 98.8%. Conclusions Using saponins to remove the human genome and a non-PCR amplification method to build libraries can be used for the identification of pathogens in the ETA of VAP patients within 6 h by MinION, which provides a new approach for the rapid identification of pathogens in clinical departments.

A novel paradigm named Wireless Powered Mobile Edge Computing (WP-MEC) emerges recently, which integrates Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technologies. It enables mobile clients to both extend their computing capacities by task offloading, and charge from edge servers via energy transmission. Existing studies generally focus on the centralized design of task scheduling and energy charging in WP-MEC networks. To meet the decentralization requirement of the near-coming 6G network, we propose an online learning algorithm for computation offloading in WP-MEC networks with a distributed execution manner. Specifically, we first define the delay minimization problem by considering task deadline and energy constraints. Then, we transform it into a primal-dual optimization problem based on the Bellman equation. After that, we design a novel neural model that learns both offloading and time division decisions in each time slot to solve the formulated optimization problem. To train and execute the designed algorithm distributivity, we form multiple learning models decentralized on edge servers and they work coordinately to achieve parameter synchronization. At last, both theoretical and performance analyses show that the designed algorithm has significant advantages in comparison with other representative schemes.

Abstract

Human activity recognition is an imbalance classification problem in essence since various human actions may occur at different frequencies. Traditional ensemble class imbalance learning methods integrate resampling technique with multi-classifier models, which obtain better generalization than single ones. However, the number of base classifiers is often determined in advance, resulting in the redundant structure of a multi-classifier and larger computational cost. Moreover, various combinations of base classifiers may have similar recognition accuracy, forming a multimodel optimization problem. To address the issue, a dual-ensemble class imbalance learning method is presented, in which two ensemble learning models are nested each other. For each sub-dataset, three heterogeneous sub-classifiers compose of internal ensemble learning model, and the one with the highest recognition accuracy is selected as base classifier. In external ensemble learning model, an optimal combination that contains the smallest number of base classifiers and identifies human actions most exactly is found by multimodal evolutionary algorithms. Based on seven imbalanced activity datasets derived from localization data for person activity, statistical experimental results show that the proposed evolutionary dual-ensemble class imbalance learning method provides the simplest ensemble structure with the best accuracy for imbalanced data that outperforms other five widely-used ensemble classification methods on all metrics.

Abstract

Summarization: Nonisolated photovoltaic (PV) inverters based on a single high-frequency MOSFET power switch have become more and more popular recently. Among these topologies, the conventional buck–boost inverter is fairly achievable but has low efficiency, whereas the buck with boost inverter has the main drawback that its circuit includes too many devices. In order to outperform these topologies, a new MOSFET-switch-based transformerless inverter topology sharing one common ground between the PV source and the grid is presented in this article. The inverter experiences zero leakage current and only one energy-regulating inductor is equipped. The basic principle of operation is studied based on an equivalent circuit analysis. Moreover, the control strategy adopting dead-beat controller for the proposed inverter is designed and introduced in detail. Finally, a 110-V/50-Hz/500-W prototype is built up to test the correctness of the theoretical analysis. According to the measurement results, the efficiency of the prototype is 98.81% and 95.89% in light- and full-load situations, respectively. According to the experimental results, it can be verified that the proposed dc/ac inverter exhibits satisfactory steady-state and transient performance. Abstract

The emerging 4D printing techniques open new horizons for fabricating self-actuated deformable objects by combing strength of 3D printing and stimuli-responsive shape memory materials. This work focuses on designing self-actuated deformable solids for 4D printing such that a solid can be programmed into a temporary shape and later recovers to its original shape after heating. To avoid a high material cost, we choose a dual-material strategy that mixes an expensive thermo-responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) material with a common elastic material, % for fabricating objects, which however leads to undesired deformation at the shape programming stage. We model this shape programming process as two elastic models with different parameters linked by a median shape based on customizing a constitutive model of thermo-responsive SMPs. Taking this material modeling as a foundation, we formulate our design problem as a nonconvex optimization to find the distribution of SMP materials over the whole object as well as the median shape, and develop an efficient and parallelizable method to solve it. We show that our proposed approach is able to design self-actuated deformable objects that cannot be achieved by state of the art approaches, and demonstrate their usefulness with three example applications.

Abstract

Federated learning can achieve the purpose of distributed machine learning without sharing privacy and sensitive data of end devices. However, high concurrent access to the server increases the transmission delay of model updates, and the local model may be an unnecessary model with the opposite gradient from the global model, thus incurring a large number of additional communication costs. To this end, we study a framework of edge-based communication optimization to reduce the number of end devices directly connected to the server while avoiding uploading unnecessary local updates. Specifically, we cluster devices in the same network location and deploy mobile edge nodes in different network locations to serve as hubs for cloud and end devices communications, thereby avoiding the latency associated with high server concurrency. Meanwhile, we propose a model cleaning method based on cosine similarity. If the value of similarity is less than a preset threshold, the local update will not be uploaded to the mobile edge nodes, thus avoid unnecessary communication. Experimental results show that compared with traditional federated learning, the proposed scheme reduces the number of local updates by 60%, and accelerates the convergence speed of the regression model by 10.3%.

Abstract

Background Patient delay of COVID-19 patients occurs frequently, which poses a challenge to the overall epidemic situation. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the extent of patient delay, explore its factors, and investigate the effects of patient interval on epidemic situation. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted with 136 COVID-19 patients in Tianjin, China. Factors associated with patient delay were explored using logistic regression models. The relationship was investigated by spearman correlation analysis and mean absolute error between patient interval of lagging days and epidemic situation. Results The factors associated with patient delay of COVID-19 patients were mainly the imported cases, the first presentation to a tertiary hospital, close contacts and spatial accessibility to fever clinic. The longer the patient intervals of lagging days, the greater the number of new-onset and confirmed cases in 3-4 and 5-7 days after the first day symptoms, respectively. Conclusions Identification and quarantine of close contacts, promoting the spatial accessibility to fever clinics and creating public awareness are crucial to shortening patient delays to flat the curve for COVID-19.

Abstract

The maximum radiation efficiency can be obtained when the feed array excitation of a reflector antenna is synthesized by the conjugate field matching (CFM) method. However, the CFM method can only get the strongly tapered feeding power distribution. This will lead to most of power amplifiers (PAs) working in low efficiency states and reduce the Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) with the limited power consumption. In this work, combining the radiation efficiency and the PA efficiency, the radiated power efficiency (RPE) is defined as the new design goal and is to be raised to achieve higher EIRP. For this reason, a method based on the near-field pattern synthesis is proposed. In this method, all the on-state PAs are required to work in the highest efficiency state. Then, with well-trained support vector machine (SVM), the on-off states of the PAs are adjusted so that the reflected focal field can be better synthesized by the near-field pattern of the feed array. Thus, the loss of the radiation efficiency is minimized. As a result, the RPE is about 22% higher than that of the CFM method and about 10% higher than that of the optimum CFM truncation case.

Abstract

In the last decade, a number of severe urban power outages have been caused by extreme natural disasters, e.g., hurricanes, snowstorms and earthquakes, which highlights the need for rethinking current planning principles of urban energy systems and expanding the classical reliability-oriented view. In addition to being reliable to low-impact and high-probability outages, power system should also have high level of resilience to withstand high-impact and low-probability (HILP) events. Compared with power system, multi-energy systems (MESs) have advantages in improving resilience through energy shifting across multiple energy sectors, a variety of generalized energy storage resources and thermal inertia of heat/cooling loads. This paper proposes a resilience-oriented planning method to determine optimal configuration of distribution level MES, e.g., urban energy supply systems, considering comprehensive impacts from supply, network and demand sides in MES. Impacts of energy shifting at supply side, pipe storage at network side and thermal inertia at demand side are described in the same linear modeling framework using energy hub (EH) model. Generalized energy storage resources including centralized and distributed energy storage devices, pipe network storage and building heat capacity are all modeled into centralized energy storage to facilitate an efficient configuration planning of MES.

Neighbor discovery (ND) is a key initial step of network configuration and prerequisite of vehicular ad hoc network (VANET). However, the convergence efficiency of ND is facing the requirements of multi-vehicle fast networking of VANET with frequent topology changes. This paper proposes gossip-based information dissemination and sensing information assisted ND with multi-packet reception (GSIM-ND) algorithm for VANET. GSIM-ND algorithm leverages efficient gossip-based information dissemination in the case of multi-packet reception (MPR). Besides, through multi-target detection function of multiple sensors installed in roadside unit (RSU), RSU can sense the distribution of vehicles and help vehicles to obtain the distribution of their neighbors. Thus, GSIM-ND algorithm leverages the dissemination of sensing information as well. The expected number of discovered neighbors within a given period is theoretically derived and used as the critical metric to evaluate the performance of GSIM-ND algorithm. The expected bounds of the number of time slots when a given number of neighbors needs to be discovered is derived as well. The simulation results verify the correctness of theoretical derivation. It is discovered that GSIM-ND algorithm proposed in this paper can always reach the short-term convergence quickly. Moreover, GSIM-ND algorithm is more efficient and stable compared with completely random algorithm (CRA), scan-based algorithm (SBA) and gossip-based algorithm. The convergence time of GSIM-ND algorithm is 40%-90% lower than that of these existing algorithms for both low density and high density networks. Thus, GSIM-ND can improve the efficiency of ND algorithm.

Abstract

With the continuous development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), autonomous driving has become a popular research area. AI enables the autonomous driving system to make a judgment, which makes studies on autonomous driving reaches a period of booming development. However, due to the defects of AI, it is not easy to realize a general intelligence, which also limits the research on autonomous driving. In this paper, we summarize the existing architectures of autonomous driving and make a taxonomy. Then we introduce the concept of hybrid human-artificial intelligence (H-AI) into a semi-autonomous driving system. For making better use of H-AI, we propose a theoretical architecture based on it. Given our architecture, we classify and overview the possible technologies and illustrate H-AI's improvements, which provides a new perspective for the future development. Finally, we have identified several open research challenges to attract the researchers for presenting reliable solutions in this area of research.
