Purpose To explore whether patient position influences a surgeon’s ability to accurately judge anchor position on the glenoid. Materials and Methods Two anchors were inserted into the glenoid of 8 shoulders. Arthroscopic videos were taken from 3 views (posterior beach chair [pBC], posterior lateral decubitus [pLD], and anterosuperolateral decubitus [asLD]). The shoulders were disarticulated to identify “true” anchor position. Seventeen shoulder surgeons reviewed the videos and indicated anchor positions using the “clock face” method. Accuracy was measured within tolerances, ranging from zero (exact), 0.5 (half-hour), 1.0, and 1.5 hours of “true” position. Intra- and inter-rater agreement was calculated. Post hoc analyses explored for bias dependent on surgical side. Results The overall accuracy was 34.0%. At tolerances of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 hours, accuracy increased to 82.4%, 95.4%, and 98.0%. With a 30° scope, identification of exact position was more accurate in pBC than pLD (odds ratio [OR] = 1.397; P = .029) but not asLD (OR =1.341; P = .197). At a tolerance of 0.5 hour, the 30° scope was more accurate in pBC than both pLD (OR = 1.444; P = .011) and asLD (OR = 1.728; P = .009). In left shoulders, anchors were perceived as more inferior than true position in asLD and pLD. In right shoulders, anchors were perceived as more superior than true position from pBC and pLD. Inter- and intrarater agreement were highest in pBC with a 30° scope (30° scope weighted kappa = 0.783 and 70° scope weighted kappa = 0.853, respectively). Conclusion Judgment of anchor position on video is most accurate in a pBC view. Inter- and intrarater reliability were also highest from a pBC view.

Background: About 20–25% of all rotator cuff tears are associated with footprint bone cysts. Large cysts (>10 mm2) are rare but can be problematic for anchor fixation and rotator cuff repair. So far treatment of footprint bone cysts was described using large or several anchors, cement, or compaction grafting mostly with allograft bone being biologically inferior to restore bone stock compared to autologous grafts. Methods/Results: We report about a 57-year-old manual laborer with persistent pain and loss of shoulder function (subjective shoulder value [SSV] 50%). Magnetic resonance imaging showed a high-grade partial supraspinatus tendon tear (>50%) associated with a large supraspinatus footprint bone cyst (10 mm × 11 mm × 17 mm). An efficient setup in lateral position for arthroscopic autologous press-fit grafting from the iliac crest is described for single-stage arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Improved fixation was achieved using a buddy anchor interference-fit technique. Conclusion: The clinical follow-up after 12 months showed an excellent outcome (SSV >90%, DASH-Score 14 points, and Constant-Score 87 points) with dynamic ultrasound and radiographs confirming tendon and bone stock restoration. Introduction: Fractures at the anchor site following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair are rare and only a few case reports have been described. We report two additional well-documented cases of this uncommon post-operative complication and provide a review of the current literature. Case Report: A 48-year-old male underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) due to a massive rotator cuff tear. Nine weeks postoperatively, the patient suffered a humeral head fracture at the anchor site of the ARCR after trauma. Despite subsequent surgical treatment with open reduction and internal fixation, the patient demonstrates with excellent functional outcome scores at 2-year follow-up. Conclusion: Humeral head fractures are a rare complication after ARCR. The use of intraosseous anchors requires careful consideration regarding positioning and quantity used. Article provides an overview of the world and domestic samples of high-strength threaded rebar for pre-stress in concrete structures. First of all, their technical characteristics were analyzed that affect the speed of installation of buildings and structures and the metal content of reinforced concrete structures used in them. We also consider the individual characteristics of the profile of rebar that are specific to individual countries, followed by an assessment of their behavior in reinforced concrete structures. Special attention is paid to domestic developments in this direction, in order to assess the competitiveness of innovative profiles both within Russia and on the world market. One of the most important developments in recent years in our country is the rebar class Av1000P, the history of which described in the second chapter of this review. The reason for the development of this profile was significant problems related to the crack resistance, thrust and endurance of previous types of thread and periodic profiles of high-strength rebar products. In addition to the reinforcement profiles, a high-speed method of joining and anchoring with the help of coupling threaded connections was partially considered, which is only possible on a screw profile armature without labor-intensive threading on rods.

IntroductionA new technology (Sportwelding®) was recently presented, which uses ultrasonic energy to meld a resorbable suture anchor at the interface with the host bone. A standardized clinical use was not investigated yet. This study prospectively evaluated the surgical and clinical outcomes of the Fiji Anchor® (Sportwelding®, Schlieren, Switzerland) in the repair of an ulnar collateral ligament lesion of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb.Material and methodsThe range of motion, grip and pinch strength, disability of arm, shoulder and the hand (DASH) and patient rated evaluation (PRWE) score, pain, satisfaction, complications and adverse events were assessed in 24 patients after surgical treatment for an acute displaced rupture or avulsion of the ulnar collateral metacarpophalangeal ligament of the thumb using the Fiji Anchor® after 6, 12 and 52 weeks.ResultsAt final follow up, the range of motion of the metacarpophalangeal joint reached almost the contralateral side (49.3° SD 11.7°). Thumb opposition showed a Kapandji score of 9.7 (SD 0.5; range 9–10). Grip strength, the lateral, tip and the three jaw pinch showed nearly similar values compared to the contralateral side (83–101%). Pain was low (0.2 SD 0.7 at rest and 0.6 SD 1.0 during load). The DASH score was 5.0 (SD 7.3) and the PRWE score was 4.1 (SD 9.0). 81% of patients were very satisfied at final follow-up. Two patients were rated unstable during the follow-up period due to a second traumatic event. Three cases experienced difficulties during anchor insertion, whereby incorrect anchor insertion resulted in damage to the suture material; however, this was resolved after additional training.ConclusionOne advantage of this anchor appears to be its stable fixation in cancellous bone. The surgical treatment of an ulnar collateral ligament lesion of the thumb using the Fiji Anchor® can lead to an excellent clinical outcome with a minor complication rate; however, long-term dangers and the cost effectiveness of the procedure are not known yet.

Background Lateral-row (LR) arthroscopic biceps tenodesis (BT) has been described as a technique using an LR rotator cuff repair (RCR) anchor for biceps fixation. This technique has not been compared with other BT techniques. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing a suprapectoral "in-the-groove" arthroscopic BT and patients treated with an LR tenodesis performed in conjunction with arthroscopic RCR. Methods Patients undergoing arthroscopic BT in the setting of an arthroscopic RCR were evaluated preoperatively and at a minimum of 12 months' follow-up. Patients who underwent an in-the-groove BT were matched 1:1 to patients who underwent an LR BT based on age at surgery and size of the rotator cuff tear using the Patte classification. Comparisons made included age, sex, body mass index, patient-reported outcome measures, range of motion, and patient satisfaction. Results There were 82 patients (41 in each group) who met the inclusion criteria, with an average follow-up period of 33 months and average age of 61 years. By use of the Patte classification, there were 20 matched pairs with stage 1 tears, 11 matched pairs with stage 2 tears, and 10 matched pairs with stage 3 tears. Comparisons of the 2 cohorts revealed no differences in preoperative or postoperative motion, patient-reported outcome measures, or patient satisfaction. Furthermore, no differences were found in overall improvements in motion or outcome measures, as well as overall satisfaction. Conclusions Patients undergoing simultaneous RCR and BT demonstrate similar patient-reported and objective outcomes for both LR tenodesis and in-the-groove tenodesis techniques.

Background Suture anchor placement for subscapularis repair is challenging. Determining the exact location and optimum angle relative to the subscapularis tendon direction is difficult because of the mismatch between a distorted arthroscopic view and the actual anatomy of the footprint. This study aimed to compare the reliability and reproducibility of the navigation-assisted anchoring technique with conventional arthroscopic anchor fixation. Methods Arthroscopic shoulder models were tested by five surgeons. The conventional and navigation-assisted methods of suture anchoring in the subscapularis footprint on the humeral head were tested by each surgeon seven times. Angular results and anchor locations were measured and compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Interobserver intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were analyzed among the surgeons. Background Perianchor cyst formation (PCF) can occur after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) anchors; however, little is known about PCF after all-suture anchor (ASA) use. Methods We reviewed patients who underwent double-row arthroscopic rotator cuff repair from 2012 to 2017 with ASAs implanted in the medial row and PLLA anchors in the lateral row. We evaluated PCF (graded on magnetic resonance imaging) and compared physical examination and functional surveys between patients with PCF (WC) and without PCF (WoC) at long-term follow-up. Results Among twenty-two patients (23 shoulders), 93% of PLLA anchors (vs. 79% ASA) displayed a grade 0 PCF, P = .100. No PLLA anchors had a grade 3 or 4 PCF, compared to 11% of ASAs, P = .158. At a mean postoperative follow-up time of 113 weeks, there was no significant difference between WC and WoC cohorts with regard to range of motion, rotator cuff strength, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons survey scores, or retear rates. However, the WoC cohort had a significantly higher University of California at Los Angeles shoulder survey score at final follow-up (34.3 WoC vs. 30.9 WC, P = .024). Conclusion No difference was found in PCF between ASAs and PLLA anchors. At long-term follow-up, WoC patients had significantly improved functional outcome scores, based on the University of California at Los Angeles survey, but equivalent range of motion and rotator cuff strength examinations compared with WC patients.

Background Selinexor is an oral, selective nuclear export inhibitor. STORM was a phase 2b, single-arm, open-label, multicenter trial of selinexor with low dose dexamethasone in patients with penta-exposed relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) that met its primary endpoint, with overall response of 26% (95% confidence interval [CI], 19 to 35%). Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was a secondary endpoint measured using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy – Multiple Myeloma (FACT-MM). This study examines impact of selinexor treatment on HRQoL of patients treated in STORM and reports two approaches to calculate minimal clinically important differences for the FACT-MM. Methods FACT-MM data were collected at baseline, on day 1 of each 4-week treatment cycle, and at end of treatment (EOT). Changes from baseline were analyzed for the FACT-MM total score, FACT-trial outcome index (TOI), FACT-General (FACT-G), and the MM-specific domain using mixed-effects regression models. Two approaches for evaluating minimal clinically important differences were explored: the first defined as 10% of the instrument range, and the second based on estimated mean baseline differences between Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) scores. Post-hoc difference analysis compared change in scores from baseline to EOT for treatment responders and non-responders. Results Eighty patients were included in the analysis; the mean number of prior therapies was 7.9 (standard deviation [SD] 3.1), and mean duration of myeloma was 7.6 years (SD 3.4). Each exploratory minimal clinically important difference threshold yielded consistent results whereby most patients did not experience HRQoL decline during the first six cycles of treatment (range: 53.9 to 75.7% for the first approach; range: 52.6 to 72.9% for the second). Treatment responders experienced less decline in HRQoL from baseline to EOT than non-responders, which was significant for the FACT-G, but not for other scores. Conclusion The majority of patients did not experience decline in HRQoL based on minimal clinically important differences during early cycles of treatment with selinexor and dexamethasone in the STORM trial. An anchor-based approach utilizing patient-level data (ECOG PS score) to define minimal clinically important differences for the FACT-MM gave consistent results with a distribution-based approach. This paper proposes a new way to strengthen arched buildings with an insufficient bearing capacity of the foundations for the thrust perception. The new method of strengthening the arched buildings can be used in architectural and structural solutions of buildings with zones where it is impossible to place tie-beams traditionally. In the literature there are no research results on this issue. The authors described a new method of strengthening arched buildings. Using a frameless arched structure with an insufficient bearing capacity of the foundations for the thrust as an example, they considered the proposed strengthening method with two options for anchoring the arched building's foundation with tie-beams installed to perceive the thrust to semi-buried and buried anchors. The authors carried out theoretical studies and determined the magnitude of the prestresses in the installed tie-beams to ensure the bearing capacity of the arched building for the variant of asymmetric snow design load. Conclusions. The significance of the obtained results for the construction industry is to propose a method to strengthen arched structures with an insufficient bearing capacity of the foundations for the thrust perception. The proposed method of strengthening is an effective and novel way of increasing the bearing capacity of structures and foundations of arched buildings and can be used in architectural and structural solutions of buildings with zones that impede the traditional placement of tie-beams.

OBJECTIVES The present pilot study analyzed two abutment types (a retentive ball and a non-retentive dome) in implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) on 6 mm short implants with respect to clinical, radiological, and patient-reported outcomes (PROs), during the first year. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two implants were placed bilaterally in mandibular molar sites, converting existing free-end removable partial dentures (RPDs) to IARPDs. Twelve subjects were randomized to initially receive either the dome (Group A, n = 6) or the ball abutment (Group B, n = 6). After eight weeks, the abutments were exchanged. After another 8 weeks, the participants were given the choice of one of the abutments. WOS:000650535000001 PMID: 33988739 The aim of this study is to collect paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) patient data from hematology centers all over Turkey in order to identify clinical features and management of PNH patients. Patients with PNH were evaluated by a retrospective review of medical records from 19 different institutions around Turkey. Patient demographics, medical history, laboratory findings, and PNH-specific information, including symptoms at the diagnosis, complications, erythrocyte, and granulocyte clone size, treatment, and causes of death were recorded. Sixty patients (28 males, 32 females) were identified. The median age was 33 (range; 17-77) years. Forty-six patients were diagnosed as classic PNH and 14 as secondary PNH. Fatigue and abdominal pain were the most frequent presenting symptoms. After eculizumab became available in Turkey, most of the patients (n = 31/46, 67.4%) were switched to eculizumab. Three patients with classic PNH underwent stem cell transplantation. The median survival time was 42 (range; 7-183 months) months. This study is the first and most comprehensive review of PNH cases in Turkey. It provided us useful information to find out the differences between our patients and literature, which may help us understand the disease.

Background: Superior labral anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears are one of the most common injuries to the shoulder, with the type II variant representing the most frequently encountered subtype. Purpose: To systematically review the literature to better understand outcomes after arthroscopic repair of isolated type II SLAP lesions using knotted versus knotless anchors based on implant number, implant location, patient position, and portal position. Study Design: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: A systematic review investigating all studies in the literature between January 2000 and June 2019 reporting on patients undergoing arthroscopic repair for isolated type II SLAP lesions using knotted versus knotless suture anchors was performed following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines using the PubMed, BIOSIS Previews, SPORTDiscus, PEDro, and Embase databases. Results: A total of 234 patients undergoing isolated arthroscopic repair of type II SLAP lesions using suture anchors were identified, with 76% (179/234) treated using knotted anchors versus 24% (55/234) treated using knotless anchors. Complications were reported in 12% of patients treated using knotted anchors versus no patients treated using knotless anchors ( P = .008). The incidence of complications for knotted anchor repair was not significantly affected by patient position ( P = .22) or portal position ( P = .19). Using multiple regression analysis, we found no significant association with the incidence of complications when analyzing for anchor design ( R 2 = 0.02; P = .06) or anchor position ( R 2 = 0.02; P = .92). No significant difference in return-to-activity timing was appreciated based on anchor type ( P = .28), patient position ( P = .98), or portal position ( P = .97) in patients treated using knotted anchors. Conclusion: Patients treated using knotted anchors were significantly more likely to experience a postoperative complication compared with patients treated using knotless anchors after arthroscopic repair of isolated type II SLAP lesions. Despite the increased incidence of a postoperative complication after knotted anchor fixation compared with knotless anchor fixation, multiple regression analysis showed that anchor design and anchor position were not significantly predictive of the incidence of complications. Given the increasing popularity of knotless anchor fixation, further study on the long-term outcomes after knotless repair for isolated type II SLAP lesions is warranted.

Objectives: kL a mass transfer coefficient was predicted using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) for analyzing non-newtonian effects on gas liquid mass transfer in a 10 L bioreactor stirred with an Anchor Impeller. Methods/Statistical Analysis: The set up bioreactor configurations were defined by typical culturing conditions used for fungi organism. Bubble breakage frequency and coalescence rate were simulated using Luo - Colaloglou and Tavlarides models and PBM approaches, respectively. Simulated results from different shear rates due to non-newtonian behaviour are compared by analyzing its influences in bubble size and power input. Findings: A clear relationship between high levels of shear rates and small bubble sizes is found in this work. The later is also associated with the high values of kL a simulated (270 h-1) and compared to levels found at low shear rates (62 h-1). Application/Improvements: Impressed by these findings new design optimizations for non-newtonian bioprocessing applications would be improved using CFD. The treatment result in a patient with a complex deformity of the feet due to neural Charcot-Marie-Tooth amyotrophy is presented in the article. A combined use of the Ilizarov transosseous osteosynthesis method and transfer of the tibialis posterior muscle tendon by anchoring to the cuboid bone allowed us to achieve a successful long-term result of treatment and restore ability of active dorsiflexion of the foot. Functional outcome was assessed using the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scale. AOFAS score increased significantly from 26 points preoperatively to 80 points at 18 months after intervention. The ankle motion increased from 25° preoperatively to 50° on the left side and 60° on the right side at long term. In our opinion, this approach allowed the patient to start walking earlier, restored weight-bearing ability of the foot and reduced treatment time.

Object and purpose of research. A method for calculation of mechanical and electric subsystems of a float type wave-power generator is developed Materials and methods. Analytical methods for treatment of electromechanical devices and systems are used. Main results. An engineering method has been developed to calculate mechanical and electric subsystems of a float type wave-power generator. Conclusion. The obtained results enable calculation and design of float-type wave-power generators with gearless kinematic configuration.

With the wide application of anchored structures in various engineering, their durability and service life have become an important issue in the development of anchoring technique. According to the corrosion experiment results on different working conditions (close and damp, permanently soaked in water, wet and dry alternately, weak acidity aqueous soaking), and on the basis of determining the loss rate threshold of anchor steel reinforcement bearing capacity, this paper first test the experiment data and then predict the service life of anchor steel on four different working conditions by adopting GM (1,1) model. The results indicate that the grey prediction has a high accuracy.

International audience; Post-installed anchors in reinforced concrete structures are increasingly important in current constructions especially in repair or upgrading works. A research program was completed to determine the influence of the tightening torque and the anchorage depth on the pullout performances of torque-controlled expansion anchors. The diameter d of the tested anchors was 10 mm. Six configurations were tested on 18 concrete blocks. Three pre-tension loads and two anchorage depths were considered. The results show that the fastening torque has no influence on the load-bearing capacity far away from the edges. However, an increase of the torque leads to a decrease of the anchor’s slipping during pullout tests. Nevertheless, applying an excessive fastening torque may lead to a steel-rupture of the anchor during the fastening phase. An increase of the anchorage depth leads to a better load capacity of the anchor and reduces the risk of concrete cone rupture. Finally, a simplified model of the tension response of the anchor with a bilinear load-displacement relationship has been suggested.

A new design of the outriggers for mobile transport and technological machines with manipulators was developed. A new type of a outrigger allow to increase the overall stability when manipulator is working. The main support complemented by an anchoring device for the counteracting for machine overturning and shear service loads. The working element of the anchor device is inserted into the base surface at an angle. This ensures the formation of stress fields between the main support and anchor device. The FEM-simulation confirm the effectiveness of new outrigger design. It is theoretically found that working on the anchor device trying to escape from the base surface. Its front surface is consistently crack the soil by the rotating displacement of its adjacent layers along lines that would lead to the formation of the characteristic buckling of originally flat surface. The main support is counteracting for this process. Thus a second shear direction (perpendicular to the first direction) is create and significant increase of additional holding moment for 10..40 % (depending on base chassis). If angle between anchor device and base surface is 30...45 degrees the maximum efficiency will be obtained.

Traffic barriers represent one of the basic road safety features. There are several types of traffic barriers based on the material from which they are made of and their location. Bridge structures are usually fitted with steel barriers. A steel barrier is, in fact, a relatively complex system linking individual steel elements, which, as a whole, has to meet the requirements given by normative regulations. In order for the steel barriers to fulfill their function and prevent the catastrophic consequences of traffic accidents, it is absolutely necessary to ensure their correct installation on the bridge structure. It seemed until recently that carrying out quality inspections of steel barriers installation, i.e., their anchoring into the concrete ledges, was a relatively complicated time- and money-consuming process, and that is why inspections of the correct anchoring installation in new or existing barriers were not carried out as standard. This paper thoroughly describes in detail the non-destructive ultrasonic pulse method, with which the anchoring of steel barriers on selected bridge structures is being checked. From the measurements and statistical evaluation of the results, it is apparent that carrying out inspections of the anchoring of these road safety features should be considered routine, and at the same time, the inspection of anchoring quality should be required by law in order to ensure the safety of road traffic. Cytometry by Time-Of-Flight (CyTOF) uses antibodies conjugated to isotopically pure metals to identify and quantify a large number of cellular features with single-cell resolution. A barcoding approach allows for 20 unique samples to be pooled and processed together in one tube, reducing the intra-barcode technical variability. However, with only 20 samples per barcode, multiple barcode sets (batches) are required to address questions in robustly powered study designs. A batch adjustment procedure is required to reduce variability across batches and to facilitate direct comparison of runs performed across multiple barcodes run over weeks, months, or years. We describe a method using technical replicates that are included in each run to determine and apply an appropriate adjustment per batch without manual intervention. The use of technical replicate samples (i.e., anchors or reference samples) avoids assumptions of sample homogeneity among batches, and allows direct estimation of batch effects and appropriate adjustment parameters applicable to all samples within a batch. Quantification of cell subpopulations and mean signal intensity pre- and post-adjustment using both manual gating and unsupervised clustering demonstrate substantial mitigation of batch effects in the anchor samples used for this adjustment calculation, and in a second validation set of technical replicates.

Background: Few studies have compared the clinical outcomes of using 1 versus 2 suture anchors for anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) repair. American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society score, Karlsson and Peterson score, and Tegner activity level were evaluated preoperatively and ≥2.5 years postoperatively. At follow-up, patients were also asked about time to return to sport as well as level and intensity of physical fitness. Satisfaction was evaluated with the Sefton grading system. Results: After ≥2.5 years of follow-up (30 months in the 1-anchor group, 33 months in the 2-anchor group), patients in the 2-anchor group had a higher Tegner activity level than those in the 1-anchor group (mean ± SD, 4.75 ± 1.07 vs 4.05 ± 1.17; P = .039). As compared with patients in the 2-anchor group, fewer patients in the 1-anchor group returned to their preoperative activity level (54.2% vs 22.9%; P = .029); the rate of activity at the same or higher intensity as preinjury was also lower in the 1-anchor group (50% vs 79.2%; P = .038). However, there were no differences between the groups in terms of American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society and Karlsson and Peterson scores, time to return to work/sport, duration of activity participation, level of physical fitness, or satisfaction according to Sefton grading. Conclusion: Arthroscopic ATFL repair appears to be an effective treatment regardless of whether 1 or 2 suture anchors are used. The techniques had similar functional outcome scores, but 1-anchor repair produced inferior activity-related outcomes.

The problem of interaction between ground anchor and surrounding soil under pressure grouting is solved by analytical method. This estimation makes it possible to calculate stresses at the interface between anchor and soil, which can be used for determination of anchor's bearing capacity. The problem consists of two stages: stresses in the surrounding soil are determined using prescribed displacements, and after that residual stresses are calculated on the basis of viscoelastic equation.

The analysis of a sequence of interaction in which two students from ELE of intermediate level conducted an activity of information gape suggests that the learners deployed two types of mechanisms for control of intersubjectivity: anchor and the control of the other's words. Through anchorage, the partners point out their perspective and clarify the other's perspective by clarification requests and confirmation checks. Through the control of the other's words, strengthen their understanding of the perspective of the other.

An analytical method is proposed in this paper to calculate the maximum embedded depth of a dragged Hall anchor when passing through rock berm and to thus define a minimum buried depth of pipelines in rock berm to prevent pipelines from being damaged by dragging anchors. The movement of a Hall anchor in rock berm is interpreted based on the equilibrium conditions for resisting and driving moments acting on the anchor. To verify the accuracy of the proposed analytical method, model tests were carried out by using three scaled Hall anchor models and dragging them through rock berm. The comparisons between the two studies show that the average value of their differences for the stable embedded depth of a Hall anchor in sand and in rock berm are only 1.7% and 2.7%, respectively. The good agreements indicate that the proposed method is accurate enough to calculate the minimum buried depth of pipeline in rock berm during pipeline design. Accepted version

Objective This study was performed to evaluate the clinical effect of an anchor nail and titanium cable for lower patella fractures and identify an effective treatment. Methods Thirty-five patients with lower patella fractures were treated using anchor nail and titanium cable technology. The anchor was fixed to the main part of the patella; the lower patella was then fixed. A bone tunnel was created, and the titanium cable was fixed. The fracture was allowed to heal without tension. Postoperative radiographs were obtained at regular follow-up evaluations. The Böstman function scores were used to assess postoperative complications. Results All patients were followed for an average of 15 months. The fracture healing time ranged from 12 to 24 weeks. The postoperative Böstman function scores were as follows: average, 28.6 points; excellent and good scores in 28 and 7 patients, respectively (100% rate of excellent and good scores). At 6 and 12 months postoperatively, the maximum degree of active extension of the affected knee joint was comparable with that of the healthy contralateral joint. Conclusion The combination of an anchor nail and titanium cable for lower patella fractures is simple and clinically satisfactory, restores knee function well, and is a worthy orthopedic method.

In order to secure the underground stope in the ore body, 'T1', the supporting of excavated area is carried out. The supporting, in this case, is carried out by means of anchors of type SWELLEX and SN, M-20 in a combination with the resin LOKSET RESIN CAPSULES, and reinforcement mesh, which is applied with the layer of torkret concrete. This work presents the results of testing the carrying capacity of anchors in a given ore body 'T1'.

WOS: 000333317900008, PubMed ID: 24509222, Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the mode of failure and biomechanical characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V anchors biomimetically coated with calcium phosphate (CaP) for soft tissue fixation to bone in an animal model. Methods: The current study included 14 adult New Zealand white rabbits equally divided into two groups. Calcium phosphate-coated Ti-6Al-4V anchors were used in the test group and non-coated Ti-6Al-4V anchors in the control group. Anew approach was applied to synthesize the CaP coatings via the biomimetic growth in the Lac-SBF containing Ca2+ and PO43- ions, Na-lactate and lactic acid (HL). Titanium anchors were implanted into the right tibia, followed by biomechanical tensile strength tests. Histological studies were carried out after removal of anchors (bone-implant surface). Results: The CaP-coated Ti-6Al-4V anchors had significantly higher tensile strength (p=0.003) and displacement values (p=0.004) than the non-coated anchors. Control group scores were higher than those of the test group (14 and 9, respectively) in tensile strength tests. Conclusion: The new CaP coating can be used in orthopedic surgery as catalyzer to improve bone ingrowth. ABSTRACT: This paper presents the results of centrifuge model testing on slopes reinforced by anchored geosynthetics and subjected to seepage conditions. The tests were conducted on 2V:1H slope models under steady seepage condition at 50g. Surface settlements and pore water pressures at different locations were recorded during the test. The influence of anchor stiffness, anchor length, and anchor pretensioning were examined. With an increase in anchor strength or stiffness, a considerable decrease in crest settlements and face movements was observed. Further, pretensioning of strands was found to be effective in enhancing the efficiency of anchored geosynthetic systems. Limit equilibrium stability analyses were in good agreement with the experimental results of slope models at failure.

For water depths greater than 60m floating wind turbines will become the most economical option for generating offshore wind energy. Tension mooring stabilised units are one type of platform being considered by the offshore wind energy industry. The complex mooring arrangement used by this type of platform means that the dynamics are greatly effected by offsets in the positioning of the anchors. This paper examines the issue of tendon anchor position tolerances. The dynamic effects of three positional tolerances are analysed in survival state using the time domain FASTLink. The severe impact of worst case anchor positional offsets on platform and turbine survivability is shown. The worst anchor misposition combinations are highlighted and should be strongly avoided. International audience; The equipment of French nuclear power plants is fixed on reinforced concrete structures with base plates with headed fasteners. Electricity of France decided to carry out an experimental research program in partnership with Laboratory of Civil and Environmental Engineering in order to optimize the design of the headed fasteners and identify margin. This article introduces the results of static tension tests on an anchorage composed of an anchor plate welded to four ribbed bars or headed smooth studs. The anchors are cast in place in a reinforced concrete block. The experimental campaign is carried out on real size anchors and anchors with reduced embedment depths. Tests on single rod are also carried out in order to analyse the group effects. Following the embedment depth, the collapse of the anchorages is caused by a concrete cone breakout failure, a steel rod failure or a combination failure of bond and concrete cone failure for ribbed bar. For bonded anchors, the group effect involves a decreasing of 30 % of the bond stress. For headed anchors, Eurocode 2 tends to underestimate the ultimate strength for a concrete breakout failure. This experimental campaign will provide a data base enabling the development of numerical models in order to improve the design.

Background: Despite an abundance of literature regarding construct strength for a myriad of anchors and anchor configurations in the shoulder, there remains a paucity of biomechanical studies detailing the efficacy of these implants for proximal hamstring repair. Purpose: To biomechanically evaluate the ultimate failure load and failure mechanism of knotless and knotted anchor configurations for hamstring repair. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: A total of 17 cadaveric specimens divided into 3 groups composed of intact hamstring tendons as well as 2 different anchor configurations (all-knotted and all-knotless) underwent first cyclic loading and subsequent maximal loading to failure. This protocol entailed a 10-N preload, followed by 100 cycles incrementally applied from 20 to 200 N at a frequency of 0.5 Hz, and ultimately followed by a load to failure with a loading rate of 33 mm/s. The ultimate failure load and mechanism of failure were recorded for each specimen, as was the maximal displacement of each bone-tendon interface subsequent to maximal loading. Analysis of variance was employed to calculate differences in the maximal load to failure as well as the maximal displacement between the 3 study groups. Holm-Sidak post hoc analysis was applied when necessary. Results: The all-knotless suture anchor construct failed at the highest maximal load of the 3 groups (767.18 ± 93.50 N), including that for the intact tendon group (750.58 ± 172.22 N). There was no statistically significant difference between the all-knotless and intact tendon groups; however, there was a statistically significant difference in load to failure when the all-knotless construct was compared with the all-knotted technique (549.56 ± 20.74 N) ( P = .024). The most common mode of failure in both repair groups was at the suture-tendon interface, whereas the intact tendon group most frequently failed via avulsion of the tendon from its insertion site. Conclusion: Under biomechanical laboratory testing conditions, proximal hamstring repair using all-knotless suture anchors outperformed the all-knotted suture anchor configuration with regard to elongation during cyclic loading and maximal load to failure. Failure in the all-knotted repair group was at the suture-tendon interface in most cases, whereas the all-knotless construct failed most frequently at the musculotendinous junction. Clinical Relevance: No biomechanical studies have clearly identified the optimal anchor configuration to avert proximal hamstring repair failure. Delineating this ideal suture anchor construct and its strength compared with an intact hamstring tendon may alter the current standards for postoperative rehabilitation, which remain extremely conservative and onerous for these patients.

CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) cable can be advantageously used to overcome the problem of corrosion encountered in conventional PS steel strands. Since CFRP cable presents weakness against lateral pressure and stress concentration, the application of the anchorage system adopted for conventional PS steel strand is likely to fail in providing reliable resistance because of premature failure. Therefore, appropriate anchorage device needs to be developed for the anchoring of CFRP cable. The typical types of anchoring device for CFRP cable are wedge-type, bond-type and grip-type anchorages. Most of anchors are bond-type to measure the tensile property of CFRP cables. Generally CFRP materials like reinforcements, tendons, and cables have surface treatments to improve bond strength as sand coating, deformed shapes, fabricated covers and so on. In case of CFRP cable without surface treatment, its bond strength is much lower than CFRP cable with surface treatments. Accordingly, bond-type anchor may be long and tensile property of CFRP cable may be misestimated. In this study, tests for tensile property of CFRP cable without surface treatment have been performed. To improve the bond strength of CFRP cable, the end of the cable was split in order to widen bond area. The test results revealed that widening the end of CFRP improved the anchoring performance up to the ultimate strength of CFRP.

Summary Objective: The usefulness of any questionnaire in clinical management and research trials depends on its ability to indicate a likelihood of treatment success during follow-up. The Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) reflects a clinically relevant change score. The aim of this study was to estimate the MCID for the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) in patients with sarcoidosis. Methods: Outpatients (n Z 321) of the ild care team of the Department of Respiratory Medicine of the Maastricht University Medical Centre, The Netherlands, participated in this prospective follow-up study. Anchor-based and distribution-based methods were used to estimate the MCID. Based on the anchor Physical Quality of Life, a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) was obtained. The distribution-based methods consisted of the Effect Size and Standard Error Measurement (SEM). Results: The anchor-based MCID found with ROC was 3.5. The distribution-based methods showed that the corresponding change scores in the FAS for a small effect was 4.2. The SEM criterion was 3.6 points change in the FAS. Conclusions: Based on the anchor-based and distribution-based methods, the MCID is a 4-point difference on the FAS. This MCID can be used in the follow-up of fatigue (FAS) in clinical trials and in the management of individual sarcoidosis cases.

Soft rock prevalent in coal-bearing strata in China, a lot of soft rock is buried deep in the larger role of high stress by the formation, and maintenance of the roadway is very difficult to dig. Therefore, the soft rock tunnel in the control theory and practice of in-depth study on the maintenance of soft rock and coal mine production safety have important theoretical and practical engineering value. Based on the characteristics of soft rock roadway analysis, and theory and method of supporting the research, choose the right type of support and supporting means, surrounding rock deformation control, reduce destruction of surrounding rock strata behavior, to take reasonable supporting effective technical control of roadway deformation and maintain the stability of surrounding rock. On the roadway approach to the design support for soft rock tunnel problems, combined with the practical application of steel mesh and anchor design support system anchorage system and deep surrounding rock formation deep control system, calculation of parameters of rational support And the corresponding recommendations and measures, and achieved good results.

Sterno Clavicular Joint (SCJ) dislocations are rare injuries of the shoulder girdle. Their management is controversial due to a not guaranteed outcome after any kind of treatment (conservative or open). Open reduction is challenging because of the anatomical site, while the conservative treatment does not always improve pain or instability discomfort. We report a case of traumatic and painful anterior SCJ dislocation of a young policewoman treated with open reduction by a new surgical technique. Functional result is extremely good at 2 years of follow-up. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

In inertial-based pedestrian navigation, anchors can effectively compensate the positioning errors originating from deviations of Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), by putting constraints on pedestrians’ motions. However, these anchors often need to be deployed beforehand, which can greatly increase system complexity, rendering it unsuitable for emergency response missions. In this paper, we propose an anchor-based pedestrian navigation approach without any additional sensors. The anchors are defined as the intersection points of perpendicular corridors and are considered characteristics of building structures. In contrast to these real anchors, virtual anchors are extracted from the pedestrian’s trajectory and are considered as observations of real anchors, which can accordingly be regarded as inferred building structure characteristics. Then a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter (RBPF) is used to solve the joint estimation of positions (trajectory) and maps (anchors) problem. Compared with other building structure-based methods, our method has two advantages. The assumption on building structure is minimum and valid in most cases. Even if the assumption does not stand, the method will not lead to positioning failure. Several real-scenario experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

In this study, a series of experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of anchor bars on steel frame systems where the connections were provided by anchor bars between frame and infilled walls. Seven one over four scaled specimens having one story and one bay of frames were tested. Experimental study was carried out by damage-controlled and incrementally applied load up to loading cracks. The test results relieved that with the help of using anchor bars the capacity of energy absorption with initial stiffness were increased. It has been found that the frames without using anchor bars failure at the loading edge, the crushing behavior of infilled walls and separations at free edges were occurred. These observed failure behaviors replies with tensile cracking for the frames having anchor bars. There for it should be underlined that anchor bars have a significant effect on improving the behavior of the frames.

Quantifying the penetration depth of a dragging anchor on a horizontal layer of rockfill provides the possibility to optimize the layer thickness of rockfill layers with a protective function. Current research on this subject is limited and is often aimed at anchor capacities in sand and clay. Penetration behaviour in rockfill is mainly investigated for protections with a limited width. Anchor dragging tests carried out for a canal expansion project show that as the rock size increases, the penetration depth and the holding capacity of the anchor decrease. A semi-empirical prediction formula is derived. An additional series of scaled down tests shows that the process of anchor drag in rockfill is scalable, as long as all aspects of the trial design are taken into account. This provides possibilities for accessible further research, expanding on the prediction of penetration depth and further anchor behaviour in different types of rockfill.

Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is a success and became the mainstream method of reconstruction in recent years. Due to the technical development in shoulder surgery, novel suture anchors and high-strength sutures are widely used providing convincing fixation, however anchor pullout still remains a problem. The aim of our study was to observe early anchor movement on a large patient cohort, and identify clinical, biological and technical variables that can lead to this complication.A total of 5,327 patients who had arthroscopic rotator cuff reconstruction for full thickness tear were included in the study. Radiographs taken immediately after surgery were observed and occurrent anchor displacement was recorded. Patient-specific, tendon-specific, bone-specific and implant-specific variables were studied. Any possible relationship between these factors and anchor displacement was investigated.Early anchor movement occurred in six cases (0.1%). The involvement of two or more tendons, retraction of the tendon by more than 2 cm and the use of four anchors was associated with higher incidence of anchor displacement, however the difference was not significant.Based on our study, anchor pullout occurring immediately after surgery is a relatively rare complication. Instead of timing the radiologic examination directly after the procedure, assessment of the anchors' position four to six weeks after surgery should be considered.

Strengthening of the structures with external shear walls recently has become an attractive alternative compared to conventional strengthening methods. These external shear walls can be erected either cast-in-place or by pre-casting. However, cast-in-place construction is difficult and time consuming especially in multistory buildings. On the other hand, a single precast panel is too heavy for transportation and assembly. These difficulties might be overcome by producing precast panels as multi-piece panels. However, in that case, behavior of connections between panels will be important as it could control the failure mode of the shear wall. For this reason, this study is aimed at testing the behavior of different types of precast panel connections. Within this study, one monolithic reference model and two precast panel models having anchored connection details were produced. The behavior of connections was tested under reversed-cyclic lateral loads. The results showed that ductility of the models with connections are significantly lower than monolithic specimen. Although, each panel has good RC detailing with proper confinement and concrete quality, connections are the governing elements that control the behavior. Cracking was only observed at the connection, and there were no proper plastic hinge formations at the panels. Therefore, it was concluded that anchored connections cannot be designed for high ductility levels. Some suggestions are made regarding the area of use of anchored connections in precast panels. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Background: All–soft tissue suture anchors provide advantages of decreased removal of bone and decreased glenoid volume occupied compared with traditional tap or screw-in suture anchors. Previous published data have led to biomechanical concerns with the use of first-generation all-soft suture anchors. Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the load to 2-mm displacement and ultimate load to failure of a second-generation all-soft suture anchor, compared with a first-generation anchor and a traditional PEEK (polyether ether ketone) anchor. The null hypothesis was that the newer second-generation anchor will demonstrate no difference in loads to 2-mm displacement after cycling compared with first-generation all-soft suture anchors. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Twenty human cadaveric glenoids were utilized to create 97 total suture anchor sites, and 1 of 3 anchors were randomized and placed into each site: (1) first-generation all-soft suture anchor (Juggerknot; Biomet), (2) second-generation all-soft suture anchor (Suturefix; Smith & Nephew), and (3) a control PEEK anchor (Bioraptor; Smith & Nephew). After initial cyclic loading, load to 2 mm of displacement and ultimate load to failure were measured for each anchor. Results: After cyclic loading, the load to 2-mm displacement was significantly less in first-generation anchors compared with controls ( P < .01). However, the load to 2-mm displacement was significantly greater in second-generation anchors compared with controls ( P < .01). There was no difference in ultimate load to failure between the first- and second-generation all-soft suture anchors ( P > .05). Conclusion: The newer generation all-soft suture anchors with a theoretically more rigid construct and deployment configuration demonstrate biomechanical characteristics (specifically, with load to 2-mm displacement after cyclic loading) that are improved over first-generation all-soft suture anchors and similar to a traditional solid tap-in anchor. The configuration of these newer generation all-soft suture anchors appears to mitigate the biomechanical concerns of decreased load to failure with first-generation all–soft tissue suture anchors. Clinical Relevance: The theoretical advantages of all-soft anchors may be particularly valuable in revision surgery or in cases where multiple anchors are being placed into a small anatomic area.

Background/Aim: There are currently no data on the relative retention rates of the Instinct clip, Resolution clip, and QuickClip2Long. Also, it is unknown whether retention rate differs when clips are applied to ulcerated rather than normal mucosa. The aim of this study is to compare the retention rates of three commonly used endoscopic clips. Materials and Methods: Six pigs underwent upper endoscopy with placement of one of each of the three types of clips on normal mucosa in the gastric body. Three mucosal resections were also performed to create "ulcers." Each ulcer was closed with placement of one of the three different clips. Repeat endoscopy was performed weekly for up to 4 weeks. Results: Only the Instinct and Resolution clips remained attached for the duration of the study (4 weeks). At each time point, a greater proportion of Instinct clips were retained on normal mucosa, followed by Resolution clips. QuickClip2Long had the lowest retention rate on normal mucosa. Similar retention rates of Instinct clips and Resolution clips were seen on simulated ulcers, although both were superior to QuickClip2Long. However, the difference did not reach statistical significance. All QuickClip2Long clips were dislodged at 4 weeks in both the groups. Conclusions: The Resolution and Instinct clips have comparable retention rates and both appeared to be better than the QuickClip2Long on normal mucosa-simulated ulcers; however this did not reach statistical significance. Both the Resolution clip and the Instinct clip may be preferred in clinical situations when long-term clip attachment is required, including marking of tumors for radiotherapy and anchoring feeding tubes or stents. Either of the currently available clips may be suitable for closure of iatrogenic mucosal defects without features of chronicity.

The sliding of the anchor groups, the strain of the head rods, the strain of the stirrups and the surface concrete block displacements are measured. The collapse of the anchorages is caused by a failure of the steel rods or a concrete breakout failure for a loading ranging between 600 and 300 kN. The experimental ultimate strength is compared with ultimate load obtained from the technical specifications of Eurocode. This experimental campaign will provide a data base enabling the development of numerical models in order to improve the design.

Tensile and shear testing to final fracture of large-diameter, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite round bars is often challenging because local stress triaxiality near the gripping ends can precipitate premature failure at these locations, instead of in the desired test gauge section. A method using expansive grout materials has been used, though its design is impaired by the lack of understanding of the gripping pressure developed by the confined expansive grout material. In this paper, an analytical solution has been derived to correlate the hoop strain on the outer surface of the confining steel pipe (caused by grout expansion in the steel pipe) to the grout's elastic modulus and coefficient of linear expansion. By experimentally measuring the exterior surface hoop strains of two different steel pipes, the elastic modulus and coefficient of linear expansion were determined. This solution has been generalized to include the composite bar and predict the gripping pressure at the bar-grout interface for any given pipe and composite bar combination. Based on the analytical results, expressions for key design parameters for improved expansive grout-based gripping systems, including the minimum grip length, optimum dimensions of the confinement pipes, and minimum volume of the grout material, have been provided. Based on the improved design, glass FRP bars of diameters 19.0 to 38.0 mm (0.75 to 1.5 in.) were tested without gripping problems and with failure loads up to 534 kN (126 kip), which significantly exceeds 400 kN (90 kip), the load level identified as a threshold of concern. In this paper, we combine the characteristics of three fundamental data models in order to represent their semantics in a common framework. These fundamental data models include the familiar concepts of modeling (1) object classes (or entities), their properties (attributes) and relationships between them, (2) multidimensional objects and attributes that can be summarized over the dimensions, and (3) hierarchical structures. This model, called the Composite Data Model, facilitates combinations of these three model structures to be represented jointly in a single schema, thus providing more expressive and natural queries over them. The main advantage of the Composite Data Model (CDM), and a Composite Query Language (CQL) over it, is that any combination of the three fundamental models can be represented jointly based on explicit semantics of each of the fundamental data models. This is unlike existing data models that represent each data model individually or obscure the semantics of additional features being modeled. In order to develop a query language over the combined schemas we introduce a new concept, referred to as anchor, which is an object class that acts as the focus of the query. We provide in the query language path structures relative to the anchor that facilitate data navigation and data manipulation. We develop the syntax and semantics of the proposed language, and illustrate its expressive power through numerous query examples, and comparisons to three other query languages: OQL, SPARQL, and XQuery.

In the field of ocean engineering, a beginning has been made in the use of large-sized suction anchors for safe anchoring of large compliant structures. Suction anchors derive most of their uplift resistance from passive suction developed during the pullout movement. This article describes a set of laboratory tests on model suction anchors of three different embedment ratios to estimate the pullout behavior of suction anchors in soft clays typical of Indian marine clays. Tests were conducted on model anchors installed in soil beds prepared at four different consistencies in a test tank. This study shows the influence of soil consistency and embedment ratio (L/D) on the pullout behavior of suction anchors and on the variation of suction pressure at the top of the soil plug. The test results reveal that the behavior of suction anchors is much better than the behavior of open-ended anchors from the considerations of both capacity and deformation. The consistent development of suction inside the anchor top confirms the plug formation and significant breakout resistance in the form of suction-induced reversed end bearing. The results are further analyzed in terms of suction breakout factors. Further, the effect of burial depth of suction anchor on pullout behavior is shown.
