Dermatoglyphic patterns are dermal ridge configurations present on the fingers, palm, toes and soles of human which are valuable in the diagnosis of many diseases associated with genetic disorders. Although the aetiology of dental caries and periodontal diseases is multi-factorial, we hypothesize that they may have genetic predisposition. We also evaluated its association with environmental factors like salivary pto assess any possible correlation. This study aims to Compare Dental caries (DC) and chronic generalized periodontitis (CGP) with Dermatoglyphic patterns and salivary p. One hundred patients were divided into group I (40 DC patients), group II (40 CGP patients) and group III includes 20 healthy controls. DMFT (decayed missing filled teeth) index (> 5) from group I, Russell’s periodontal index (2-5) from group II patients were taken. Finger print patterns by ink method and salivary p by p strips were recorded from all the groups and analysed with descriptive analysis. Group I showed more incidence of whorl patterns at lower salivary p than Group II and III which was statistically significant (pThe present study showed DC seen in people with more number of whorl patterns and periodontal disease with more ulnar loop patterns at lower salivary P. Larger scale studies are warranted to confirm our findings before applying dermatoglyphics to predict an individual prone to develop DC and periodontal disease in clinical practice.

Capitalizing on the photoacoustic effect, we developed a new fingerprint sensing system that can reveal both fingerprints and underlying vascular structures at a high spatial resolution. Our system is built on a 15 MHz linear transducer array, a research ultrasound system, and a 532-nm pulsed laser. A 3D image was obtained by scanning the linear array over the fingertip. The acquired fingerprint images strongly agreed with the images acquired from ultrasound. Additional experiments were also conducted to investigate the effect of acoustic coupling. We discovered that high-quality fingerprint and vessel images can be acquired from both wet and dry fingers using our photoacoustic system. The reduced subdermal features in dry coupling can be enhanced through post-processing. Compared to existing fingerprint scanners, the photoacoustic approach provides a higher quality 3D image of the fingerprint, as well as unique subdermal vasculature structures, making the system almost impossible to counterfeit.

Background: Dermatoglyphic pattern, epidermal ridges found in the fingertips of the palm exhibits in various pattern like whorl, arch and loop. This pattern of arrangement develops by 22nd weeks of intrauterine life and persists all through the life without any change. Among the metabolic disorders available globally, Dermatoglyphics as a diagnostic aid is now well established in number of diseases which have strong hereditary basis and is employed as a method for screening for abnormalities. Aim of the study: To study dermatoglyphics in type 2 diabetic individuals. Materials and Methods: Prospective observational study for duration of one year from March 2019 to February 2020 at the Department of Forensic Medicine at Maheshwara Medical College and Hospital, Patancheru, Telangana. Dematoglyphics were studied in 50 known cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus and compared with normal, healthy, non diabetic age matched control individuals. The patterns on both palms were recorded by the Modified Ink Method and studied for finger tip pattern configuration, palmar pattern configuration, palmar a-b ridge counts and palmar atd angle. Results: The patients were from 30 to 70 years age groups. There was increase in the frequency of whorls and decrease in loops in both the hands in diabetic individuals as compared to controls. Conclusion: Dermatoglyphics is a noninvasive simple technique and can be used as an initial screening method to identify diabetic population. Background: Bipolar affective disorder is an episodic illness characterized by fluctuating mood states. Association of dermatoglyphic traits with bipolar affective disorder has been observed in various studies. This study was undertaken to evaluate epidermal ridge patterns in bipolar patients as compared to healthy controls attending a super speciality district hospital in West Bengal. Context and purpose of study: Establishing dermatoglyphic parameters as biomarkers for early diagnosis and consequently, prompt intervention in bipolar affective disorder will ensure a greater scope of recovery, and thus promote a better quality of life for the individual as well as lower the burden of disease for the society. Methods: Quantitative dermatoglyphic parameters namely, Total Finger Ridge Count (TFRC), Total A-B Ridge Count (TABRC), and ATD Angle of 100 bipolar patients were compared to 100 age and gender matched healthy controls. Results: Statistically significant differences were found on comparing the dermatoglyphic parameters between cases and controls. TFRC was found to be decreased while ATD angle was increased in bipolar cases, as compared to the control group. However, no significant change was observed in TABRC between the two groups. Conclusions: This study found a significant association between dermatoglyphic pattern anomalies and the development of bipolarity. This may offer a scope of primordial prevention of bipolar disorder in future. Background. Dental caries is the localized destruction of dental hard tissues (enamel and dentine). Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index is the most commonly used dental caries index. Thickness of the outermost part of the tooth called the enamel is determined by the rate of deposition of enamel proteins. Relative enamel thickness (RET) gives a measure of enamel thickness with respect to dentine. Dental caries is influenced by a genetically determined factor called dermatoglyphics (DG). As the genes responsible for RET and DG lie on the same chromosome and develop during the same time of intrauterine life, it is biologically plausible to correlate RET and DG. Aims. This study consists of two primary aims: (1) to assess RET using cone beam computed tomography images and correlate it with caries and (2) to correlate RET with DG. Materials and Methods. 148 dental subjects were assessed for DMFT caries score and were categorized as Group 1 with DMFT = 0 and Group 2 with DMFT ≥ 1 . Following this, their DG pattern was recorded digitally. The CBCT images of these subjects were assessed for RET, and the data were analyzed statistically. Results. Mean RET in our sample population is 18.45 (SD 3.79) while mean DMFT is 5.34 (SD 5.13). Mean RET in Group 1 subjects was 19.82 (SD 4.05) while that in the Group 2 was 17.68 (SD 3.43). RET and DMFT showed a statistically significant negative correlation ( p = 0.007 ). The “Single Loop” DG characteristic showed a statistically significant difference between males and females ( p = 0.031 ). The “Simple Arch” type of DG was positively correlated with RET. Conclusion. This is the first in vivo study to assess RET using CBCT images and correlate with DMFT and DG. RET is inversely related to DMFT while directly proportional to the “Simple arch” DG pattern. Males and females differed in their “Single Loop” DG characteristic.

Background and Objectives: Dermatoglyphics sterms from the ancient art of palmistry, which was practiced from time immemorial and is still followed throughout India by the Joshi caste. There appears to exist an extremely old volume, on the markings on the hands possessed and treasured by the Hindus. From here, this art has spread throughout the world. Essential hypertension is the category of hypertension that has no identifiable cause, it is associated with aging and inherited genetic factors. Positive family history increases the risk. Dermatoglyphic patterns are genetically determined and can be used as supportive for diagnosis of various hereditary disorders including essential hypertension. This study was carried out to compare palmar dermatoglyphic pattern in, essential hypertension and control group and compare with previous studies. Method: A hospital based case control study was conducted 100 essential hypertensive patients are taken from Basaweshwar hospital Gulbarga, and another 100 persons are included as control group. The palms and fingers are smeared with ink to bring out the dermatoglyphiic patterns which were subsequently studied. Result: There was increased number of whorls and decreased number of ulnar loops in essential hypertensive patients compared with normal individuals. Total finger ridge count and Absolute finger ridge count is increased in Essential hypertension patients and there is also increased atd angle. Conclusion: The knowledge of dermatoglyphics in patients with essential hypertension can be utilized to find out genetic correlation. Background Dermatoglyphics is a scientific study that deals with the epidermal ridges and their configurations on certain body parts such as fingers, palms, and soles. In humans, during the intrauterine life (IUL) the primary palate, lip, and dermal ridges are formed during the same period, the genetic code engineered in the genome normal or abnormal is mirrored on these developing structures. Thus making dermatoglyphic a preceding tool in dental diagnosis. Aims and objectives The study aimed at evaluating dermatoglyphics as a tool in diagnosing malocclusion by comparing qualitative and quantitative dermal patterns in class I and class III skeletal malocclusion. Materials and methods Sixty subjects fulfilling inclusion-criteria were segregated into two groups, group I (class I skeletal malocclusion) and group II (class III skeletal malocclusion) with 30 subjects in each group. Dermatoglyphic patterns were recorded using ink method following rolling impression technique on recording sheets. The dermatoglyphic data were assessed for different finger ridge patterns, total finger ridge count, a-b ridge count, and atd angle. Results The data were analyzed using Chi-square and paired t tests. In skeletal class III malocclusion, there was an increase in loop count and a decrease in the count of whorls and arches as compared to class I malocclusion (p = 0.037). However, in relation to total finger ridge count, a-b ridge count, and atd angle, there was no statistically significant difference found between the groups. Conclusion The end of the study derived that the fingerprint patterns are valuable and ineradicable markers of malocclusion. Thus, the dermatoglyphics can be utilized as a screening tool for early prediction of skeletal class III malocclusion at a younger age-group. Context: Primary teeth and dermal ridges form around the same time in utero. Hereditary and intrauterine factors affecting the formation of primary teeth may affect dermal ridge formation also. Aims: This pilot study was conducted to see the association between dermatoglyphics and dental caries among preschool children Settings and Design: Cross sectional, case–control design. Materials and Methods: One hundred, healthy preschool children aged 3–6 years attending private kindergarten participated. They were divided equally into caries active and caries free group based on the oral examination. The fingerprint patterns were collected for all the fingers of both hands of children and categorized as loop, whorl or arch for each finger of the right and left hand. Statistical Analysis Used: Statistical analysis was performed using the Chi-square test and Independent t-test to compare the dermatoglyphics patterns between the caries-free group and the caries active group for each variable. Results: (1) Dental caries susceptibility of an individual decreases with an increase in the incidence of loop pattern, followed by whorl pattern and arch pattern; (2) Left hand loop was found statistically significant (P = 0.03); (3) Presence of loop pattern in left hand thumb predicts significantly lower risk of caries, whereas the presence of arch pattern in left hand thumb predicts significantly high risk of early childhood caries (P = 0.01). Conclusions: The caries free status of a preschool child increased with the presence of loop on the left thumb.

Blood-contaminated fingermarks (FMs) found in violent crime scenes may directly connect the suspect to the crime by linking the FM to the suspect and the DNA from the blood to the victim. However, marks that are incomparable are considered "dead-evidence" as the link to the suspect is lost. In this study, a novel approach was attempted to uncover the trace amount of touch DNA of the suspect in such marks. We examined the effect of two enhancement methods, ninhydrin (NIN) and amido black (AB), on DNA recovery from blood-contaminated FMs. A total of 108 fingerprints were deposited in three sets of depleted blood prints, blood-contaminated FMs, and latent FMs. All FMs were developed by either NIN or AB, or left undeveloped as reference followed by the quantification of the total DNA amount. This work shows that while AB had a detrimental effect on the quantity of blood-derived DNA specifically, reducing it by half, no similar effect was observed for touch DNA in latent FMs. This reduction led to the alteration of the major-to-minor DNA profile ratio to 70:30, thus enabling to obtain two distinct DNA profiles of the suspect from the touch DNA as well as the victim's profile from the blood. From an operational perspective, the use of AB in crime scenes may have an added value to retrieve the crucial DNA profile of the suspect, thus resurrecting a "dead-evidence."

Background. Breast cancer is one of the four types of cancer among women and is the most frequently diagnosed in most countries. Breast cancer occurs due to DNA damage and genetic mutations affected by exposure to estrogen, inheritance of damaged DNA, or pro-cancer genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2. Therefore, a family history of ovarian cancer or breast cancer increases the risk of developing breast cancer. The embryo of the breast develops around the age of 6 weeks of pregnancy. Similar to breast development, fingerprint patterns also develop during the 6-13 weeks of pregnancy. Thus, the genetic message contained in the genome occurred during that period and was reflected in the dermatoglyphic pattern.Methods. The literature search was systematically used using PubMed, Cochran, Google scholar, and other Gray literature between 2010-2020. Of the 69 publications identified, 21 met the criteria and were included in the review. The review is carried out following the provisions of PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review).Results. This systematic review showed fairly consistent findings in breast cancer patients who tended to have more whorl fingerprint patterns and larger ATD angles. For radial loops, ulnar loops and arches were minor compared to the control group potential as an initial screening tool in at-risk groups.Conclusion. Long-term and follow-up studies with larger sample sizes in various ethnicities are needed to validate dermatoglyphics in anthropometric measurements as a promising marker of breast cancer.

Background: Due to the similar duration of development, finding the dermatoglyphic patterns to predict malocclusions can help a pediatric dentist to attempt any necessary preventive and interceptive orthodontic therapies. Aim: To assess the correlation between different dermatoglyphic patterns with the permanent molar relationships. Materials and Methods: 300 children who are 14-16 years old with completely erupted 2nd permanent molars up to occlusal table were recruited and the pattern of molar terminal plane was recorded in the proforma. Finger prints of these subjects were recorded with ink and roller method. Forensic analyst analysed the prints and classified based on the classification given by Galton and also calculated the finger ridge count as given by Cummins and Midlo Statistical analysis used: Chi-Square test was applied to compare proportions between all the groups and also for gender comparison. Fisher’s exact test was used when any expected cell frequency of less than five were obtained. Paired t-Test and McNemar’s test were applied to compare values between right and left hand. Results: Class I children showed absence of arch pattern in thumb and little finger of left hand; and higher total finger ridge count in right hand when compared to left hand. Children with Class II molar relationship had a significant association with presence of arch pattern in thumb finger of left hand; and presence of whorl pattern in both left and right ring fingers. Class III had a significant association with presence of loop pattern in left thumb finger and little finger; absence of arch pattern in thumb of right hand. Conclusion: Dermatoglyphics can be a useful non-invasive analytical tool to predict malocclusions in permanent dentition and sometimes, to identify an individual. Further studies with larger sample size are required to provide an insight into its significant correlations.

Background: The prevalence of obesity has been steadily increasing worldwide. Reliable and noninvasive tools that can be used to diagnose such conditions may help us in mass screening and prevention. Finger prints and lip prints have been used as the genetic markers in some diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Studies to correlate a possible association of such markers among obese individuals have not been reported in India to date. The present study was conducted to determine and compare the lip print and finger print patterns in normal and obese individuals and also to evaluate any possible correlation between the lip prints and finger prints in both the study groups. Methodology: Lip and finger print patterns of 100 obese and equal number of age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were analyzed. Right thumb, right index, left thumb and left index finger prints were evaluated. Gender-wise comparison was also made. Results: Lip prints revealed no significant difference between obese and nonobese individuals. Predominant Type I lip print was observed in both the study groups. Comparison of finger prints between obese and nonobese individuals revealed a highly significant results for all the fingers. Predominant finger print patterns in the right thumb, right index, left thumb and left index among obese individuals were whorl (51%), loop (83%), whorl (79%) and arch (74%), respectively. No correlation between the lip prints and finger prints was noted. Conclusion: Finger prints in the obese individuals showed significant differences when compared to the normal controls while lip prints failed to reveal any significant difference. Lip prints did not correlate with the finger prints. Right thumb revealed a significant gender difference among obese individuals.

Dermatoglyphic patterns were recorded using standard ink method. The result showed in SCC, there was an increase in frequency of arch and ulnar loop patterns on fingertips, decrease in frequency of simple whorl patterns on fingertips, decrease in frequency of palmar accessory triradii on right and left hands. Significant findings in OSF included an increase in frequency of arch and ulnar loop pattern, decrease in frequency of simple whorl patterns on fingertips, decrease in ATD angle on right hand decrease in frequency of palmar accessory triradii on right hand. The results revealed that the field of dermatoglyphics holds promising results for determining the genetic susceptibility of individuals to develop SCC and OSF. Background: Nowadays study of dermatoglyphics has an extraordinary significance in legal and criminal explores. Additionally, its investigation is identified with some hereditary sicknesses has an enormous application. Diabetes Mellitus is the silent killer of humanity and general medical issue. Dermatoglyphics might be viably utilized as a screening methodology in future and may help in the early recognition of instances of diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: In our study, total of 100 patients were selected from the out door patient department from the hospital, out 0f 100 patients 50 patients those are suffering from diabetes made the experimental group and the other those are having no systemic condition made the other group or the control group. The establishment of the connection between the two groups by examining the each group the fact of presence or absence of dermatoglyphic design. In this total finger ridge count, indian ink technique was usd for taking up the hand, along with total ridge count of finger, absolute finger ridge count, ridge count for distal as well as lateral deviation along with palmer frequency design computerised along with lateral deviation with design frequency of the c- line and angles, which represent the qualitative boundary. Results: The result that has been obtained from our study reveals that the total finger count of the ridge along with ridge count of the finer absolute, along with a-b count of the ridge were found to be higher in all the groups of the patient but found to be insignificant statistically. Minimising background fluorescence can enhance the visible details of treated fingerprints. Here, a 4-tpt fingerprint powder exhibiting long-lived phosphorescence is applied to this end. The powder was found to suppress background fluorescence, including on challenging surfaces, when using standard forensic equipment and eschewing specialized or bespoke imaging techniques.

Introduction: Intellectual disability is a condition, in which mental development is incomplete or hindered, causing the individuals to encounter difficulties in everyday learning. Some of the conditions with intellectual disability can be seen in dermatoglyphics due to the same period formation between fingerprints and the neocortex. This study aims to evaluate the distribution of dermatoglyphics in intellectual disability individuals with Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Materials and Methods: A descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach on children with intellectual disabilities diagnosed with Down syndrome, ASD and ADHD in a special needs school in Palembang. Results: Of all 86 respondents, 31 (36%) had Down syndrome, 30 (34.88%) had ASD and 25 (29.07%) had ADHD. The most commonly found fingerprint patterns in Down syndrome, ASD and ADHD were ulnar loop patterns (80.96%, 59.67% and 46.8%, respectively). The mean pattern Intensity Index values were 11.03 for Down syndrome, 13.06 for ASD and 14.36 for ADHD. The mean Dankmeijer Index values were 3.57 in Down syndrome, 12.07 in ASD and 16 in ADHD. The mean Furuhata Index values were 18.72 in Down syndrome, 107.29 in ASD and 146.22 in ADHD. The angle of axial triradius digital in Down syndrome, ASD and ADHD was mostly on the right and left palm: 3°–65°. Conclusions: The majority of intellectual disability individuals with Down syndrome, ASD and ADHD shared relatively the same dermatoglyphic findings, especially in the fingerprint pattern, yet show differences in some measurements.

This research complements previous studies in which color contrast between ridges and furrows of latent fingermarks was investigated as a potential aging parameter. In this case, the robustness of the technique has been tested by including five female and five male donors who deposited sebaceous-rich latent fingermarks onto ceramic tile and polystyrene plastic as well as flat and rolled inked fingerprints on commercially available ten-print cards. Fresh latent fingermarks were visualized with either carbon black or titanium dioxide powder (TiO2 ) and inked fingerprints were imprinted in succession without re-charging ink. The mean intensity (MI) and intensity amplitude (IA) metrics of the color histogram were collected from each image for statistical analyses. The goals were to detect any differences within and between the analysts' own interpretation of the protocol as well as examine how color contrast may be influenced by donor, substrate, biological sex, powder type, and the quantity of ink deposited. Results show that the color contrast metrics (MI and IA) are repeatable and reproducible and not affected significantly by donor, sex, deposition pressure, or distortion. However, the metrics were sufficiently sensitive to distinguish substrate and powder types and to detect different quantities of ink. The statistical analyses confirm and expand upon previous observations regarding the reliability of MI and IA as metrics that could eventually be used to estimate the age of a latent fingermark. At the same time, it was revealed that the technique needs further improvement and standardization by including a universal "white color standard" to conduct image comparisons.

Introduction: Dermatoglyphics is the study of quantitative and qualitative patterns of ridge in palms and soles. It is being investigated in diseases having genetic basis. The recent evidence from adoption studies has provided a basis for the genetic contribution in generalized tonic clonic seizures. The parameter taken is ATD Angle and measured and compared between cases and controls. Objectives: To study the ATD angle in palmar dermatoglyphic patterns in generalized tonic clonic seizure patients. To compare dermatoglyphic angle of cases with the normal population. Materials and Methods: The ink method was followed to take palm prints. The palmar prints of 50 epileptic patients and 50 normal individuals of both sexes were collected for the study. ATD angle was measured and compared with normal. Results: ATD angle is increased in both right and left hands of combined series of male and female epileptics and only in left hand of female epileptics which is statistically significant. Interpretation and Conclusion: There is significant difference in the epileptic patients in various. dermatoglyphic features when compared to controls. One of them is with respect to ATD angle. Background: Dermatoglyphics is the study of epidermal ridge pattern of sole, palm and finger tips. Dermatoglyphic traits develop in early phase of development and are genetically controlled. Genetic basis of bronchial asthma (BA) is well established. More than one member of the family may be affected by the same disease. We tried to correlate dermatoglyphic patterns of bronchial asthma patients and their first degree relatives and its clinical implications, if any. Methodology: dermatoglyphic prints were obtained from the hands of 125 patients and their first degree relatives (son & daughter) and compared with 150 normal subjects included as control group. Both qualitative (finger print pattern) and quantitative parameters (a-bridge count, atd0, TFRC) of the subjects were measured. Results Conclusions: Study showed an increase in the number of whorls and TFRC in almost all the digits in BA patients and their first degree relatives as compared to control group. Dermatoglyphic patterns help in early identification of patients with respiratory symptoms that may develop BA and helps in reducing morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. This study was carried out to determine the possible differences between the dermatoglyphic characteristics of the digit and inter-digit areas of Down Syndrome (DS) patients and healthy Nigerians. The dermatoglyphic prints of the digit and inter-digit areas were obtained by using the improvise digital method. Parameters evaluated were the digit patterns, inter-digit patterns and single flexion crease of the fifth digit. Comparison of dermal patterns in DS patients and normal ones was done using Chi-square test at a significant level of P = .05. The result of the digit patterns showed that the total mean percentage frequency for arch, radial loop, ulnar loop and whorl were 5.28%, 0.34%, 75.94% and 18.45% in DS patients and 9.55%, 1.11%, 60.11% and 29.22% in normal subjects respectively. The distribution of dermal ridge differ significantly in digits I, II and III of the right hand and digits II and III of the left hand in patients and normal subjects at P = .05 level. Down syndrome patients had more of open fields in all the inter-digit areas except in inter-digit C. The difference in patterns between DS patients and normal subjects was significant in inter-digit C and D of the left hand only. One normal subject had single flexion crease compared to four in Down syndrome patients. The findings of the study could be used as supplementary diagnostic aid for Down syndrome.

Dermatoglyphics have been utilized as models for the diagnosis of vast genetic conditions due to their relationship with the genetic make-up of an individual. However, little studies have been conducted worldwide trying to ascertain the relationship between dermatoglyphics and sickle cell anaemia. Therefore, the present study aimed at generating baseline data to elucidate the possible diagnostic value of dermatoglyphics for earlier detection and screening of Sickle Cell Anaemia (SCA) in Ghana. A total of 400 participants including 200 SCA patients from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and 200 control group (CG) from KNUST were recruited for this study. The palmprints and fingerprints of the participants were taken and the sickling status of the control group was determined. Distribution of the three major fingerprint patterns, PIC patterns, ATD angle and total finger ridge count (TFRC) were determined. Loop dominated in both the SCA and control groups followed by whorl and arch. PIC 300 dominated in the SCA group while PIC 310 dominated in the control group, this was statistically significant. Also, the study recorded 5 unreported PIC’s (PIC 400, PIC 410, PIC 430, PIC 500 and PIC 510) in the Ghanaian population. The SCA group recorded a mean ATD angle of 43.62o while the control group recorded 41.61o, this was statistically significant. The SCA group recorded a mean TFRC of 67.17 while the control group recorded 78.49. The results of the present study have shown that, there is a relationship between dermatoglyphics and SCA and this will serve as a reliable indicator for earlier detection and screening of sickle cell anaemia especially in neonates. The aim of the study was to compare the Ink, Lipstick and the Improvise Digital Methods by quantitatively and quantitatively analyzing some dermatologlyphic features of the digit and palm. Twenty one Biomedical Technology students were recruited for the study. The prints of the digits and palms of all participants were taken using the ink, lipstick and Improvise digital methods. In addition all participants were also trained to take the prints using all the methods and analyzed dermatoglyphic features. Dermaltoglyphic parameters evaluated were digit patterns, total finger ridge count (TFRC) and ATD angles. In addition direct one-on-one interview method to measure participants’ response to each of the methods was done. Chi-square test and paired t-test was used to analyze the results. There was no significant difference (P> .05) in the qualitative results for digit patterns obtained by the Improvise digital method with either of the other two methods. But qualitative evaluation of ATD angle and TFRC showed a statistical difference (P = 0.00 and P = 0.01). The Improvise digital method was rated 94.74% on participants’ preference scale, 91.22% on ease of method and 94.74%.on convenience. All the methods have their comparative advantages but the Improvise digital method was most preferred by participants.

Diabetes is a global disease and is rising in occurrence though the rate of increase is higher in developing countries than that in the developed countries. Dermatoglyphics is a branch of science involved in the study of epidermal ridges on the surface of fingertips, palms, soles and toes A case control study was conducted at Bapuji Hospital, Davngere to compare dermatoglyphic patterns in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and normal subjects and also to check if an association between type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and dermatoglyphics exists. The study concluded that there were no association between dermatoglyphics (pattern of fingerprints and triradii angles) and diabetes mellitus when the population was considered as a whole(males and females together) but there were significant differences when the sexes were considered separately. In the current era of the digital world, the hash of any digital means considered as a footprint or fingerprint of any digital term but from the ancient era, human fingerprint considered as the most trustworthy criteria for identification and it also cannot be changed with time even up to the death of an individual. In the court of law, fingerprint-proof is undeniably the most dependable and acceptable evidence to date. Fingerprint designs are exclusive in each human and the chance of two individuals having identical fingerprints is an exceptional case about one in sixty-four thousand million also the fingerprint minutiae patterns of the undistinguishable twins are different, and the ridge pattern of each fingertip remain unchanged from birth to till death. Fingerprints can be divided into basic four categories i.e. Loop, whorl, arch, and composites, nevertheless, there are more than 100 interleaved ridge and valleys physiognomies, called Galton's details, in a single rolled fingerprint. Due to the immense potential of fingerprints as an effective method of identification, the present research paper tries to investigate the problem of blood group identification and analysis of diseases those arises with aging like hypertension, type 2-diabetes and arthritis from a fingerprint by analyzing their patterns correlation with blood group and age of an individual. The work has been driven by studies of anthropometry, biometric trademark, and pattern recognition proposing that it is possible to predict blood group using fingerprint map reading. Dermatoglyphics as a diagnostic aid used from ancient eras and now it is well established in number of diseases which have strong hereditary basis and is employed as a method for screening for abnormal anomalies. Apart from its use in predicting the diagnosis of disease; dermatoglyphics is also used in forensic medicine in individual identification, physical anthropology, human genetics and medicine. However, the Machine and Deep Learning techniques, if used for fingerprint minutiae patterns to be trained by Neural Network for blood group prediction and classification of common clinical diseases arises with aging based on lifestyle would be an unusual research work.

Aim: The aim was to study the analytical pattern in dermatoglyphics. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in Skin Opd, Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 100 participants with different hand dermatitis pattern were included in the study. All patients were subjected to: 1. Complete history, 2. Dermatological examination, 3. Finger print pattern of all the patients, 4. Informed consent. Results: This hospital-based study involved 100 patients with Psoriasis (47) Eczema (23) Dermatophytosis (12), Syphilis (3), Drug reaction (5) Palmar keratoderma. (10), the most common being psoriasis and eczema. In psoriasis patients, whorl pattern was the commonest (48.29%), followed by 31.43% loop, 21.43% arch and 2.86% composite pattern. In eczema patients, loop and whorl pattern was found in (44.74%) followed by 34.23% loop, 22.43% arch and 1.86% composite pattern. Conclusion: The palmar pattern intensities were increased in both sexes, while the digital pattern intensities were increased in males and decreased in females. TFRC was increased in males and decreased in female patients. In both cases and controls, TFRC was more in males than females. A-b count showed a significant reduction in both sexes.

The article deals with topical issues of complex research on the traces of hands, teeth, lips as well as mechanical damage of clothing. The features and specifics of each type of research in the course of complex examinations are indicated. The author emphasizes the need for further research in the field of the complex studies of fingerprinting and dermatoglyphics, the development of a comprehensive methodology for the investigation of handprints. Some organizational and methodological aspects of the appointment and production of complex examinations are shown.

The scientific study of epidermal ridges on the palms and toes is termed dermatoglyphics. Multiple births occur when more than one fetus results from a single pregnancy. This study is aimed at determining the relationship if any between multiple births and palmar flexion creases. Two hundred Igbo-Ora and one hundred Ogbomosho healthy and consenting adult female indigenes aged between 25-50 years were recruited and grouped into 4; group I consisted of multiple births women in Igbo-Ora; group II consisted of single births women in Igbo-Ora; group III consisted of multiple births women in Ogbomosho; and group IV consisted of single births women in Ogbomosho. A total of 600 palms (Igbo-Ora n=400; Ogbomosho n=200) comprising of both hands were used in the study. Palm prints samples were obtained by asking the participants to wash their hands, towel dry them, after which they were stained with stamp ink pad and prints made on A4 paper in duplicates. Palm print patterns of 105 (Igbo-Ora) and 50 (Ogbomosho) women with multiple births were compared with 95 (Igbo-Ora) and 50 (Ogbomosho) women with single births. The percentage number of primary, P and intersection, I of palmar creases with complete transverse creases, C (PIC) 300 bilaterally was significantly greater (p < 0.005) in the hands of Igbo-Ora multiple births women (52.4 %) than their single births women (37.4%) while same trend was observed for Ogbomosho women although difference was statistically insignificant,(p > 0.005). In both Igbo-Ora and Ogbomosho women, PIC 310 bilaterally was found to be significantly higher (p < 0.05) in both hands of single births women than the multiple births women. Minutiae are small distinguishing features found along every ridge flow, which make each friction ridge print unique. The most common friction ridge prints found at the crime scene are fingerprints; therefore, the most of the minutiae studies are focused exactly on this kind of prints. The authors believe that further examination and enlargement of the palm print database could result in better use of the palm prints for personal identification. We analyzed a total of 160 palm prints from 40 females and 40 males aged between 18 and 70 years from Slovakia. For the evaluation of the minutiae, the area of the hypothenar had to be marked out. The classification of the minutiae used for this study was based on a modified version of the classification system using the total of 13 types of minutiae. The frequency of every minutiae type was calculated and, using the chi-square test with Yates's correction, bilateral and sex differences were assessed. The relationship between the different types of minutiae was examined with Pearson's correlation test. During the initial phases of the identification process, the focus should be on the least common types of minutiae (Y or M and return), which were found not to correlate; thus, their mutual occurrence is random (e.g., overlap-Y or M, crossbar-return, or Y or M-dock). The results of the present study show which specific minutiae types are the most suitable for personal identification. These findings may be beneficial in more effective outcome of the identification process.

Aim To measure the IQ and record dermatoglyphic patterns of children including intellectually disabled aged between 5 years and 11 years and to correlate them. Materials and methods The present study was a cross-sectional study conducted in two private schools in the city corporation limits. A total of 300 children aged between 5 years and 11 years were equally allocated into three groups based on IQ using covariate adaptive randomization. IQ of the children was measured using Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices. Bilateral palmar and finger prints were obtained on A4-size papers by ink method using rolling technique. Prints thus obtained were analyzed for dermatoglyphic variables using magnification lens and are read based on Cummins and Midlo classification for fingertip patterns and Bali and Chaube classification for palmar flexion creases. The data were entered and statistically analyzed. For statistical significance, a two-tailed probability value of less than 0.05 was taken as significant. Results The current study suggests a relationship between different fingertip patterns of digits of I, II, III, and IV of left and right hand and also digit V of right hand with various levels of IQ. Conclusion Hence, dermatoglyphics can be considered as a preliminary noninvasive approach for the determination of IQ. Aim: To study dermatoglyphics of fingers and palms and to use it as a tool to screen the population for the pre-disposition to diabetes mellitus, for risk reduction and early therapy. Materials and methods - The study was conducted on 100 diabetic patients and 100 controls, age, sex matched. Quantitative parameters like finger ridge count, a-b ridge count, total finger ridge count, absolute finger ridge count, atd, adt and dat angles were studied. Qualitative parameters like finger ridge patterns were studied. Dankmeijer’s, Furuhata’s and Pattern intensity index were calculated. Results: Difference of a-b ridge counts, Absolute Finger Ridge Counts and Total Finger Ridge Counts between cases and controls was statistically not significant. Adt angle was significantly more in cases in right hand as compared to controls. Tad angle was less in cases in right hand as compared to controls. Fingertip patterns in all digits combined and in both hands combined in cases and controls showed there was a statistically significant increase in the number of loops in controls as compared to cases. Dankmeijer’s index was significantly more in male and female controls. Furuhata’s index was significantly more in male and female cases. Pattern intensity index was significantly more in female cases and controls as compared to males. Conclusion: Findings of the present study highlight on the possible dermatoglyphicmarkers. There were many supporting and contradictory findings to studies conducted by other researchers, hence there is lot of scope for further studies. BACKGROUND It is widely accepted that the dermal ridges develop during early foetal life & are constant (stable) throughout life, unique to the individual & therefore significant as a means of identification. It is proved that dermatoglyphics is of polygenic inheritance & like many other hereditary characters show racial & social variations. An attempt has been made to create a data base of the dermatoglyphic patterns among the diabetics of southern Orissa which may be helpful in early prediction of the disease & thus prevents its complications. METHODS Fifty male diabetic patients diagnosed with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (Type-1), of age ranging from 25 to 40 years and fifty cases of normal controls of similar age group were included in this study. Similarly fifty patients, diagnosed as cases of non-insulin dependent type of diabetes mellitus (Type-2), of age more than 40 years and fifty three cases of normal controls of similar age group without family history of diabetes, of either type-1 or type-2 up to two previous generations, were studied and analysed in this study. Fifty female diabetic patients diagnosed as IDDM cases, of age ranging from 25 to 40 years and fifty cases of normal controls of similar age group and fifty female diabetic patients of Type-2 variety (NIDDM) and fifty female controls of age group more than 40 years were included in this study. RESULTS The palm prints of the control & patients were taken & studied for Axial triradii (the most useful indicator that has been elaborately studied in the subjects from southern Orissa). This parameter showed a high level of significance in comparison to the other parameters. Observations revealed that the maximum percentage of patters were those of t’ & t’’. CONCLUSIONS The axial triradius t also proved to be the most reliable and significant parameter in case of the NIDDM patients irrespective of sex. Both males and females diagnosed as cases of non-insulin dependent diabetes possessed either t’ or t” on their palms irrespective of the side of the hands.

Introduction: Eczema is a pattern of inflammatory responses of the skin, characterized by spongiosis with varying degrees of acanthosis and a superficial perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate. Eczema results from a complex interaction between genetic susceptibility and environmental risk factors. Pulmonary function tests are valuable investigations in the management of patients with respiratory symptoms in eczema, as increased severity of respiratory illnesses, RSV wheezing and early allergic sensitization were significant risk factors for eczema disease. Objectives: The objectives of the present study was to identify patterns of dermal ridges on finger tips and palms in eczema patients and pulmonary function tests to initiate preventive measures of respiratory symptoms in eczema in early detection program and to focus the predictive strength of specific dermatoglyphic patterns in eczema patients. Materials and Methods: The present study was carried out on 50 eczema patients in JJM Medical College, Davangere which was compared with 50 normal apparently healthy individuals. Data analysis was done. Chi square test was used to compare the different groups. WRIGHTS Peak flow meter which is a portable device for measuring ventilator functions. Comparisons were performed using students t-test for 2 group comparisons Results: In the present study we found reduced PEFR in eczema patients and decrease in frequency of total arches and whorls in eczema patients were observed. There are significant differences in eczema patients in various dermatoglyphics features when compared to normal. Hence it is possible to identify the risk population with the help of dermatoglyphics and suggest them to take periodic monitoring of pulmonary function test. In P63-related ectodermal dysplasias (ED), the clinical characteristics focus on extra-cutaneous manifestations. The dermatological phenotype remains incompletely characterized. We report the dermatological features of 22 patients carrying a TP63 mutation. Erosions, erythroderma and pigmentary anomalies are characteristics of P63-related ED. Our data suggest that patients might be classified into two major P63-related disorders: AEC and EEC. RHS and ADULT represent mild AEC and EEC forms, respectively.

Singular point detection is a primary step in fingerprint recognition, especially for fingerprint alignment and classification. But in present there are still some problems and challenges such as more false-positive singular points or inaccurate reference point localization. This paper proposes an accurate core point localization method based on spatial domain features of fingerprint images from a completely different viewpoint to improve the fingerprint core point displacement problem of singular point detection. The method first defines new fingerprint features, called furcation and confluence, to represent specific ridge/valley distribution in a core point area, and uses them to extract the innermost Curve of ridges. The summit of this Curve is regarded as the localization result. Furthermore, an approach for removing false Furcation and Confluence based on their correlations is developed to enhance the method robustness. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves satisfactory core localization accuracy in a large number of samples.

In the last decade, there have been many scientific developments regarding the use of mass spectrometry to analyse the composition of fingermarks. In this context, the development of a dedicated quality control test strip would benefit the forensic community by providing a way to assess the reproducibility of the measures as well as to perform inter-laboratory comparisons. To accomplish this goal, the use of a chemical printer offers the possibility of combining a visual template with artificial fingerprint secretions. The design of the quality control test strip as well as the preliminary assessment of its performance with fingermark detection reagents and matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionisation combined with mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) are presented in this paper. The chosen template combines two geometric patterns intended to help assess the chemical analysis (full square) and imaging (lined square) capabilities of the instrument. The artificial secretion is composed of two distinct solutions: artificial sweat and artificial sebum. The printing reproducibility and chemical homogeneity of the quality control test strips were assessed in two ways: (1) using MALDI-MSI, the printed pattern was analysed and the m/z values compared to the reference list based on the artificial secretion composition, and (2) using two common fingermark detection techniques, the printed pattern was processed using an amino acid reagent (ninhydrin) and a lipid stain (Oil Red O). Overall, the results highlight the potential of a printed quality control test strip for the assessment of the quality of fingermark detection techniques as well as the possibility of performing quality monitoring of mass-spectrometry-based techniques over time.

A new multimodal biometric database designed and acquired within the framework of the European BioSecure Network of Excellence is presented. It is comprised of more than 600 individuals acquired simultaneously in three scenarios: 1) over the Internet, 2) in an office environment with desktop PC, and 3) in indoor/outdoor environments with mobile portable hardware. The three scenarios include a common part of audio/video data. Also, signature and fingerprint data have been acquired both with desktop PC and mobile portable hardware. Additionally, hand and iris data were acquired in the second scenario using desktop PC. Acquisition has been conducted by 11 European institutions. Additional features of the BioSecure Multimodal Database (BMDB) are: two acquisition sessions, several sensors in certain modalities, balanced gender and age distributions, multimodal realistic scenarios with simple and quick tasks per modality, cross-European diversity, availability of demographic data, and compatibility with other multimodal databases. The novel acquisition conditions of the BMDB allow us to perform new challenging research and evaluation of either monomodal or multimodal biometric systems, as in the recent BioSecure Multimodal Evaluation campaign. A description of this campaign including baseline results of individual modalities from the new database is also given. Level 3 details play essential roles in practical latent fingerprint (LFP) identification. To reliably extract reproducible and identifiable level 3 features, high-resolution images of fingerprints with adequate quality are required. Conventional methods for acquiring level 3 details often involve specific pretreatment, intricate peripheral, leading to time-consuming analysis. Herein, we simply used water to develop the sebaceous LFPs deposited on nitrocellulose (NC) membranes with only one step, and then the high-resolution (2048 pixels per inch) optical micrographs were captured to reflect the live fingertip with high fidelity. From the pictures, level 3 features, including all dimensional attributes of the ridges and pores such as number, size, location, shape, and edge contour can be extracted accurately and reproducibly. Among them, qualitative features (the structures of ridge edges) and several quantitative characteristics (the number and the relative location of sweat pores) exhibit good reproducibility. Remarkably, we proposed a new parameter termed “frequency distribution of the distance between adjacent sweat pores”, short form “FDDasp”, which was further proved highly identifiable in different individuals, enabling the successful distinguishment between two fragmentary fingerprints with similar level 2 structures. We believe that this methodology provides a fast and quantitative analytical paradigm for latent fingerprint identification at level 3 details.

Introduction: Dermatoglyphics may be of clinical significance to segregate those individuals who are at an increased risk for the presence of an impacted tooth. Dermatoglyphics seems to be promising as a non-invasive diagnostic tool to forecast the presence/absence of an impacted tooth. Objective The study aimed to analyze the most common pattern of dermatoglyphics present in an individual with/without impacted tooth and find a dermatoglyphic marker if any. Methods A cross-sectional study comprising of 180 subjects (90 cases and 90 control) was conducted. Blue duplicating ink was applied on the fingertips using the rolling impression technique and recorded. Results In individuals predisposed to the presence of impacted teeth, there was an increase in the frequency of WHORL-PLAIN pattern in right hand ring finger (60%) and left hand little finger (33.3%) with a p-value of 0.028 and 0.009 respectively, and LOOP-ULNAR in the right hand middle finger (74.4%) with a p-value of 0.024. Forward stepwise binary logistic regression analysis showed the left hand little finger to be the most predictive for impaction. Conclusion Dermatoglyphics could serve as a non-invasive marker to forecast the presence/absence of an impacted tooth. Its utility lies in early diagnosis to curtail the surgical complications associated with symptomatic removal of an impacted tooth.

Fingerprints and blood-groups constitute identifying characteristics of individuals. Correlation between dermatoglyphics and bloodgroups can be of use in victim identification. The aim of the present study was to determine accuracy of blood-group determination from saliva and to establish the association between distribution of fingerprint pattern and blood-groups in gender identification. 100 dental undergraduate students aged 18–22 years participated in the study. Fingerprint pattern was determined using Ink Method. ABO blood-grouping was done from saliva using the absorption-elution method. Present study showed that, most common fingerprint pattern was Loops (60%), followed by Whorls (26%) and Arches (14%). Most common blood-group was B, followed by A and O. Higher percentage of secretors in saliva was observed with females (86%) as compared to males (80%). In males, most common blood-group was AB while A was more common in females. In males, arches were most common finger print pattern (60%) whereas in females loops (55%) and whorls (52%) were more common. The study reports association between blood-group and dermatoglyphics which may help in gender identification in Forensic Medicine. It also suggests that saliva can used for ABO bloodgroup determination when blood stains are not available at crime-site.

Background: Painful lesions affecting the plantar aspect of the foot are routinely encountered in daily practice, and plantar wart, corn, and callus are the most common conditions. Although the clinical examination is sufficient to clinch an accurate diagnosis, atypical presentations indicate the need for invasive investigations like skin biopsy. Here we evaluated dermoscopic patterns of painful lesions affecting the plantar surface. Objectives: The current study aimed to, firstly, investigate the dermoscopic patterns and differentiate between painful papules and plaques on the foot, and, secondly, to analyze the histopathological correlation of these dermoscopic patterns. Methods: Following a cross-sectional design, the current study was carried out on patients with the clinical diagnosis of painful lesions of foot suggestive of plantar wart, corn, and callus referring to a tertiary care center from June 2019 to Jan 2020. Dermoscopy analysis and biopsy were performed for all participants. Results: Among 92 patients with painful plantar lesions, 56, 22, and 15 had a plantar wart, corn, and callus, respectively. Dermoscopy of warts revealed red dots (89.28%) and yellow halo (82.14%). A translucent central core (100%) and whitish ring (81.81%) on dermoscopy of patients with corn. Dermoscopy of callus demonstrated opaque yellow area in all (100%) the patients. Dermatoglyphics were absent in plantar wart in contrast to corn and callus, wherein they were preserved. Conclusions: Dermoscopy can be considered as a rapid, non-invasive, diagnostic tool in the daily practice of a dermatologist. The purpose of this research was to compare the ulnar loops of dermatoglyphics in Turner's syndrome females and control females. The present study used bilateral rolled finger prints and palm prints from 40 Turner's syndrome patients. They were between the ages of 14 and 20. Clinical examination and chromosomal analysis were used to make the diagnosis, and patients with the 45 XO karyotype were chosen. Normal healthy females between the ages of 14 and 20 were chosen as controls. Ulnar loops became more common in the I3 and I4 areas. It is extremely important in this area.

Una óptima selección deportiva está formada por la valoración del genotipo (dermatoglifía) y el fenotipo (somatotipo, composición corporal y capacidades físicas). El propósito del estudio fue determinar la relación entre la dermatoglifía y el perfil morfo-funcional en deportistas profesionales de futbol sala en la ciudad de Bogotá. La muestra estuvo conformada por 12 hombres, quienes fueron evaluados antropométricamente, con porcentaje graso de 18,4 ± 5,9; masa músculo-esquelética de 32,4 ± 4,4 kg y un somatotipo endo-mesomórfico. Por medio de la dermatoglifía se determinó predominancia en los diseños dactilares presilla (69,2±23,1), D10 (11,3±3,6), SQTL (140,7±95,1). Por último, se valoró la fuerza explosiva con la prueba de Squat Jump, en la cual la posición de poste logró mayor altura. En conclusión, existe una predisposición hacia las capacidades físicas de velocidad, potencia, coordinación y resistencia, además la fuerza explosiva es mayor en deportistas con menor valor en el componente endomórfico y en el porcentaje de masa grasa. The sample consisted of 12 men, who were anthropometrically evaluated, with a fat % of 18,4 ± 5,9; a musculoskeletal mass of 32,4 ± 4,4 kg and endo-mesomorphic somatotype. Through of dermatoglyphics, predominance was determined in the fingerprint designs L (69,2 ± 23,1), D10 (11,3 ± 3,6), SQTL (140,7 ± 95,1). Finally, explosive force was assessed with the Squat Jump test, in which the post position achieved the greatest height. In conclusion, there is a predisposition towards the physical capacities of speed, power, coordination and resistance, in addition the explosive force is greater in athletes with a lower value in endomorphic component and in percentage of fat mass.

The commonly applied method for the examination of self-adhesive stamps mainly focuses on DNA-profiling while neglecting potential fingerprint evidence. In our preliminary study it was shown that in an uncontrolled environment, fingerprints are transferred from the adhesive side of stamps onto the envelope within the first two days after application. Fingerprints can therefore be examined independently after the separation of the stamp from the envelope. The aim of this study was to develop a novel approach, which enables the combination of fingerprint development and the analysis of DNA traces originating from the same evidence, and to implement this into routine processes. Furthermore, this approach was compared with the edge fragment approach, the commonly applied standard method in our laboratory. The results showed that the novel approach is very beneficial for forensic examination of self-adhesive postage stamps on letters. Moreover, it enables parallel evaluation of dactyloscopic and DNA evidence without having an increased risk of contamination, PCR interference or altering of the fingerprint. The chance of obtaining useful forensic evidence for downstream database searching was increased from 50.0% to 83.3%. This novel method was shown to be valuable for the parallel evaluation of dactyloscopic and DNA trace material originating from the same evidence.
