Negative environmental changes generally addressed as ‘syndromes’ areevaluated in the context of Soil Degradation (SD) and interpreted by usinga ‘Land-Use/Land Cover Changes’ (LULCCs) framework in order to dis-entangle ‘past trajectories’, ‘present patterns’, and ‘future changes’. Thisapproach allows to discuss the potential impact on SD processes and itrepresents an informed basis for identifying measurable outcomes of SD.This study focuses on the case of Emilia Romagna, a region located inthe North of Italy with high-value added agricultural productions. A multi-temporal analysis of land-use changes between 1954 and 2008 has been proposed, discussing the evolution of associated SD syndromes in EmiliaRomagna. The contributing information have been used as a baseline forSustainable Land Management (SLM) strategies. This framework of analysisprovides useful tools to investigate and to monitor the effects of SD in theMediterranean basin where several regions underwent common developmentpatterns yelding global pathological symptoms of environmental degradation.

This study is in line with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to evaluate the post-Paris Agreement (COP21) through technological innovations and carbon pricing in a panel of 39 R&D economies from 1995 to 2018. The results show that sustainable technological innovations and smart applications of insurance and financial services help decrease GHG emissions in the lowest to highest quantile distribution. In contrast, air transportation freight, air freight pricing, and foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows escalate GHG emissions due to unsustainable logistics activities, inefficient freight pricing, and dirty production, which confirmed the ‘pollution haven’ hypothesis across countries. The impact of air freight revenues has a differential impact on GHG emissions in the different quantiles’ distribution, as in the lowest quantiles (i.e., τ0.2 to τ0.4), air freight revenues increase GHG, whereas, at the highest quantiles’ distribution (i.e., τ0.9) emissions decrease. Thus, the viability of air freight revenues is further assessed using Panel Granger causality and panel innovation matrix. The results show the bidirectional causality between i) air freight pricing and GHG emissions, ii) air transportation freight (and freight pricing, freight revenues, FDI) and technology innovations, iii) FDI and air freight revenues, while there is a unidirectional causality running from i) insurance and financial services to GHG emissions, ii) GHG emissions to technological innovations and FDI inflows, and iii) air transportation freight to FDI inflows.

The current industrial era has turned into a rapidly evolved world that relies abundantly on technological advancements and robotics intelligence. However, the trends of global economic appraisals showed that the process of advancement is mostly accompanied by environmental degradation. Therefore, this research studies the connection of renewable energy and technological innovations in affecting ecological footprint and carbon dioxide emission in Malaysia. In doing so, the study employs the bootstrapped autoregressive distributed lag (BARDL) model for scrutinizing the connection between environmental degradation proxies. The findings disclose that the consumption of renewable energy helps to reduce the level of environmental degradation. In addition, technology innovation also helps to reduce both carbon emission and ecological footprint. Moreover, the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is also validated for the country by showing the inverted U-shape link of economic growth with the both environmental degradation proxies. These findings give a benchmark for the policymakers to encourage local and foreign investors to invest more in renewable energy production and technology innovation in Malaysian economy whereas the results demand policy implication in the form of increased emphasis on the utilization of green energy via renewables especially in domestic businesses.

The excessive usage of the non-conventional energy especially the fossil fuels has led to the degradation of the environment. This calls out for the countries to develop, the energy policies in order to deal with this serious issue. Energy policies play a vital role in developing innovations and cost reduction techniques for promoting Renewable Energy (RE) and its adoption. India, one of the fastest growing energy consumer, is putting great efforts in the production and consumption of RE and to deal with the environmental degradation. The country has signed the Paris Agreement and launched a number of policies for supporting RE. Energy being the subject of federal and state governments makes state governments a crucial stakeholder in this initiative. In order to promote and augment RE, different states of India have also implemented policies at their level to support the national target such as feed in tariffs, capital subsidies, incentives etc. However, the effectiveness of every policy differs from each other. This paper will analyse the impact of different policy tools in the renewable sector covering five major states of India viz. Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan. The study reviews renewable energy related public polices of these states in subject, which will be learning from these states experiences and combining it with their local resources will help the other states to perform better in the renewable sector.

This study explores the dynamic effect of non-renewable energy, renewable energy, economic growth, and foreign direct investment on environmental degradation in twenty selected African countries over the period 2000–2015. We have adopted Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis and the Pollution Haven/Halo hypothesis simultaneously. In the first stage, this paper performs cross-independence test and found cross-sectional dependence in carbon emissions, non-renewable energy, and renewable energy. In the second stage, it applies first generation and second generation unit root tests for panel data and found that all concerning variables are I(1) except for economic growth which is found I(0). Therefore, we used the Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag approach using Pooled Mean Group, Mean Group, and Dynamic Fixed Effect estimators. The results indicate that all independent variables are significant and positive to CO2 emissions except for renewable energy found significant and negative to CO2 emissions, and foreign direct investment found significant and positive only in the long term. Moreover, the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis did not hold in our sample, while we found strong evidence for the Pollution Haven hypothesis in selected African countries.

Some argue that climate change-related harms are criminal harms, and that fossil fuel corporations and/or their CEOs are liable. Targeting wrongs perpetrated by fossil fuel industry CEOs individualizes the causes of climate change and presumes that punishing an individual or a group of bad actors will provide part of the solution to climate change. However, the primary driver of climate change is the system of capitalism as a total mode of production. The actions of CEOs are considerably shaped and constrained by this system—they are cogs in its machinery. Realizing the radical changes necessary to tackle the climate crisis requires rigorous examination of how the structure of contemporary capitalism perpetuates environmental degradation.

This paper aims to validate the EKC hypothesis for BRICS countries, in the presence of natural resources, renewable energy, and globalization factors. FMOLS, DOLS, Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR), and heterogeneous panel causality tests have been applied on the BRICS panel from 1990 to 2014. According to FMOLS and DOLS techniques, the EKC hypothesis does exist in BRICS countries in the presence of alternative energy resources and globalization, whereas quantile level analysis does not support globalization as a significant factor for environmental degradation. Quantile regression validates the EKC hypothesis with a direct association of natural resources and inverse association of renewable energy with environmental degradation. Heterogeneous panel causality also confirms the bidirectional Granger causality between all the variables and CO2, except globalization, which means that panel causality is endorsing the results of MMQR. Thus, it is recommended to encourage the usage of renewable energy resources in BRICS countries.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to look at the asymmetric effect of oil production on environmental degradation in OPEC member countries from 1970–2019. Design/methodology/approach The authors build a nonlinear panel ARDL–PMG model using the Shin et al. (2014) nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach in panel form to assess both the short- and long-run impact of positive and negative oil production movements on CO2 emissions. Findings The result demonstrates that the variables are cointegrated. According to the linear long run coefficients, oil production, FDI inflows and economic growth both have a positive and significant relationship with CO2 emissions, implying that they deteriorate environmental quality in OPEC countries, while renewable energy has a negative relationship with CO2, implying that increasing renewable energy improves environmental quality. The asymmetric findings prove that positive and negative shocks of oil production exert a positive effect on carbon emissions in short run and long run. Research limitations/implications To begin with, the empirical assessments do not include all OPEC member nations; researchers are advised to resolve this constraint by looking at the economies of other OPEC members. Albeit the lack of data for other energy sources may serve as another constraint of this research, future research is expected to broaden the current framework via other energy sources such as nuclear, electricity, biomass, solar as well as wind. Originality/value The research adds to the body of knowledge as many of the prevailing studies in the literature failed to look at the asymmetric effect of oil production on the quality of environment. This is another gap in the literature that the current study is set out to fill. This study adds oil production as an explanatory variable and helps to extend the existing literature for OPEC countries, which could propose a solution to deal with ensuing environmental issues.

In the last 3 decades, developing economies continuously have increased their manufacturing industries with an impressive growth rate. Rising the trend of globalization, these underdeveloped economies are receiving economic growth at the cost of environmental degradation. In this context, this study investigates the impact of globalization and human capital on carbon emissions (CO2) in the 78 developing economies from 1990 to 2016. Our findings based on robust system generalized method of moments (GMM) indicate that human capital and political globalization significantly reduce environmental degradation while economic, social, and overall globalization decrease the environmental quality. Furthermore, our empirical results support the inverted U-shaped environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis. However, globalization (without interactive term with human capital) appears to have no significant association with CO2 emissions, while (with an interactive term) it appears to have a significant negative influence on environmental quality. Moreover, our results are robust to various robustness checks; I have performed for scrutiny the consistency of our findings. This study also offers useful policy implications for stakeholders, policymakers, and governments for promoting environmental sustainability.

Environmental quality has become an important concern and topic of research recently in preceding studies. Several factors includes in environmental degradation such as the usage of energy from fossil fuels, releasing of high carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and air pollution, greenhouse effect and so on. Mixed conclusion has been achieved by studying several factors related to environmental quality in the prevailing literature. The current study therefore explore the relationship of environmental factors by taking into consideration the role of institutional quality and technological progress in the global panel of 188 countries. Panel data for the period of 2002 to 2018 is used and have applied both static and dynamic models includes OLS, fixed effect, GMM and system GMM models. The findings indicate that the use of renewable energy form renewable sources instead of energy use from fossil fuels has been found beneficial for environment as non-renewable energy consumption increase carbon emission in our results. Financial development positively while FDI have negative impact on carbon emission. Technological progress exerts positive impact where most of institutional quality variables have been found significant for carbon emission. The findings suggest policy makers on further polices by using renewable energy sources and suggest focusing on technological innovation and funding renewable energy projects through financial institutions to achieve higher quality of environment.

In acknowledgment of the devastating consequences of environmental deterioration, the Mediterranean members are committed to adopt the 2015 treaty action plans of the Paris Climate Agreement (COP21) as carbon dioxide emission (CO2) are on the rise in the Mediterranean region, which seems to be a serious challenge to our world’s environment. To this end, our study examined the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on environmental degradation for the Mediterranean members for the period between 1995 to 2016. However, variables such as, financial development, economic growth, renewable energy and fossil fuel were further examined by the use cross-sectional-Panel pooled Auto Regressive Distributed Lag methodology, Augmented Mean Group (AMG) and Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality test was used for causality analysis. The co-integration results from Westerlund (2007) shows a long-run equilibrium relationship between highlighted variables. The empirical result revealed a negative relation between FDI and CO2 indicating pollutant Hallo Hypothesis (PHH). Moreover, income and its square show an inverted U-Shaped curve indicating environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis. Both financial development and renewable energy indicated an adverse association with CO2 emission whereas fossil fuel had a positive relationship with emissions. However, there was a feedback causality among income and carbon emission as well as financial development and carbon emission. Furthermore, we observe that FDI and carbon emission, renewable energy and carbon emission, as well as fossil fuel and carbon emission were found to have one-way causal relationship. Overall, the study suggests some policy prescriptions including the implementation of conservation initiatives and the establishment of clean energy regulation and strategies for the investigated bloc.

Militarization is crucial for the sovereignty of a nation; however, there are many environmental hazards associated with increased military spending. Previous panel studies mainly captured the short-run effects of militarization on the environment. Limited scholars determined the long-run environmental impacts of militarization but they mostly ignored possible cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity problems in panel data. Our research highlights this deeply neglected area and examines the impact of militarization on the environment in 22 OECD countries by controlling economic growth, renewable energy, and fossil fuel consumption. Drawing on an extensive dataset from 1971 to 2020, we employed advanced econometric approaches robust against endogeneity, heterogeneity, and cross-sectional dependence. The results of the cross-sectional augmented autoregressive distribute lag (CS-ARDL) analysis indicate a positive contribution of militarization to CO2 emissions implying that militarization is adding to the environmental degradation in OECD nations. This evidence proves the treadmill of destruction theory for OECD nations in the modern world. Economic growth and fossil fuels consumption increase CO2 emissions, while renewable energy mitigates emissions. Moreover, economic growth Granger causes militarization. Our results suggest that reduction in militarization level and energy conservation strategies will not hamper the economic progress of selected OECD countries.

Sustainable development goals aim to promote the implementation of environmental and energy policies towards establishing a sustainable environment. Considering that energy demand has steadily increased in emerging countries along with their rapid economic growth, controlling CO2 emissions in these countries is crucial to achieving global environmental sustainability. An important concern is that renewable energy is generally classified into traditional and modern sources, and their relationships with environmental degradation can differ at the macroeconomic level. This study examines the link of the two renewable energy sources to CO2 emissions by employing an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model for 31 emerging countries from 1990 to 2016. This analysis provides clear evidence of heterogeneity of the effects between traditional and modern renewable energy sources. Although CO2 emissions have negative associations with both traditional and modern renewable energy sources in the long-term, they are more sensitive to modern renewable energy sources than to traditional ones. These results suggest that modern renewable energy sources are an effective target for environmental and energy policies in emerging countries. Policy regulators and international communities should strengthen domestic and international schemes that facilitate the transfer of green technology, particularly, that related to modern renewable energy sources, from advanced countries to emerging countries.

Green finance is a priority for alleviating environmental degradation pressures. Based on panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2009 to 2017, this study utilizes the spatial Durbin model (SDM) and the threshold model to examine the effect of green finance on environmental quality. The empirical results are as follows: (1) Green finance and environmental quality have significant positive spatial autocorrelation; the development of green finance in China is still in the lower-level range, while high-high and low-low are the dominant spatial clustering types. (2) Green finance has a significant positive effect on local environmental quality but has negative effects on that of its neighbors during the research period; however, the spatial spillover effect of green finance is heterogeneous in the three subsamples. (3) There are double threshold effects of green finance on environmental quality, and the effect decreases with the promotion of green finance. These empirical insights provide spatial references for policymakers to formulate strategies for the target of coordinated and integrated regional development.

South Africa is one of Africa's most polluted countries, with rising CO2 emissions posing a threat. South Africa must discover ways of minimizing pollution and take necessary steps before it is too late in order to achieve sustainable growth. For this purpose, this research assesses the ecological consequences of globalization, nonrenewable energy use, economic growth and renewable energy consumption in South Africa. The study leverages on the non-linearity advantages of the novel quantile on quantile regression (QQR) method for a robust analysis as opposed to the use of conventional linear approaches, thereby overcoming conspicuous shortfalls in extant studies, while offering a detailed explanation of the overall dependency structure between CO2 emissions and globalization, nonrenewable energy use and renewable energy use using a dataset covering the period between 1970 and 2018. The outcomes suggest that nonrenewable energy use, globalization, and economic growth contribute to environmental degradation in the majority of the quantiles, while the effect of renewable energy use on CO2 is not strong at all quantiles. The study highlights that economic expansion, nonrenewable energy use and globalization play key roles in in mitigating environmental sustainability in South Africa, while renewable energy is not sufficient to meet environmental requirements.

The main factors influencing children's health in Uzbekistan in 1960-1980 are the negative impacts of chemistry and its domination over the country, increasing the amount of pesticide remains in the water which caused the growth of steady diseases among the population, viral hepatitis, severe illnesses, diarrhoea, endogastric problems, liver cirrhosis, allergy and gastrointestinal diseases, malignant tumours, tuberculosis, the proximity of industrial enterprises to residential areas, lack of sanitary protection zones, deterioration of sanitary and living conditions, Infectious diseases in the south-eastern part of the Aral Sea, child mortality began to increase as a result of environmental degradation in the 1980s are all reported in this article.

This empirical study examines the endogenous relationship between carbon emissions (CO2), financial development, renewable energy, globalization, and institutional quality in 64 belt and road initiative countries (BRI) using a two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) approach with panel data over the period 2003 to 2018. Furthermore, this study used (Dumitrescu & Hurlin, 2012) causality test to estimate the variables’ causal relationship. The results indicate that financial development significantly increases CO2 emissions and causes environmental degradation in BRI countries. However, renewable energy and globalization mitigate CO2 emissions and improve the quality of the environment. Institutional quality was positive in correlation with CO2 emission and indicates bad governance, corruption, weak bureaucracy, and improper implementation of environmental laws cause environmental degradation. Further, the study also reports a bidirectional relationship of financial development, renewable energy, and institutional quality with CO2 emissions and a unidirectional causality running from globalization to CO2 emissions in BRI countries. This study offers policymakers insight into restructuring the financial system, energy consumption pattern, and global integration and improving institutions’ quality for a sustainable environment and the economy at the national and regional levels.

This work was carried out in the Naâma area to determine the appropriate techniques for natural resource conservation of the agricultural holdings surveyed in this region. The results show that combining the mechanical methods (threshold in gabion, threshold in dry stone and hillside reservoirs) and the biological ones (setting in defense, reforestation, rustic planting, etc.) can give the best result to conserve the natural resources. The investigation carried out with farmers of thirty farms allowed us to determine some peasant of water and soil conservation techniques (WSCT) implemented in this area, notably basins, seguia, mulching, and dry stonewalls. On the other hand, some thresholds were practical and very well adapted to the physical conditions of this region. Still, they are partially degraded due to the influence of intense rainfalls and violent winds, which usually require normal controls after each hydrological event. The average cost to install a complete system of natural resource conservation in this area (torrential corrections and biological plantation) could be estimated from 1200 to 4000 DZD/m3. The sensitization of people in the fight against any factor of land and environmental degradation is significant because this precious heritage that constitutes the land requests their participation in the various development programs on these steppe areas.

It is anticipated that a 50% to 70% increase in food productivity will be needed to feed 9 billion people by 2050. Livestock provide for about 33% of human protein consumption and 17% of total calories (FAO, 2018). The demand for livestock products is estimated to more than double in the next 20 yr, as a result of urbanization, economic growth, and a change in consumption patterns in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The livestock sector represents nearly 1 billion smallholder livestock producers in developing countries and contributes 40% of agricultural Gross Domestic Product and from 2% to over 33% of household incomes. Smallholder livestock production is largely based on family farming and is key to poor rural people’s livelihoods, food security, and employment creation. Livestock provide food for household consumption, products for income generation, and quick cash when emergencies and external shocks occur (i.e., climatic conditions, diseases, and price volatility). Livestock are important assets that respond to the multiple needs of smallholders (e.g., manure, draught, and hauling power), while also having a cultural and spiritual value. Poultry and small ruminants are generally managed by and provide direct benefits to women (Gueye, 2003; FAO, 2020; IFAD, 2020). Humans and our domesticated animals have evolved in unison over the past 11,000 yr, with domestication frequently portrayed as a relationship delivering benefits to both partners, human and domesticate (Zeder, 2012). Domestication sites and traditional production systems have strong links with local agroecological characteristics (Hocquette et al., 2018). Endurance of traditional production systems has also been closely linked with the maintenance of the health of the local environment by Hocquette et al. (2018). Unsustainable and/or inappropriate management of livestock has contributed to environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, emerging infectious zoonotic disease, and increased emission of greenhouse gases (van Zanten et al., 2019). These impacts have increased in severity in line with increasing human population, purchasing power, and urbanization since the mid-20th century (Thornton, 2010). This paper provides a high-level overview of the huge array of contributions made by livestock to human society beyond the provision of food and fiber with a focus on terrestrial, vertebrate species. With a focus on LMICs, we stress the significant role of livestock in sustainable development, including: ecosystems services via nature-based livestock production systems; sociocultural and religious roles; and, contributions to human health and well-being beyond animal-source food.

Background Todays, due to the impact of human food choices on increasing greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and environmental degradation, there is a new approach about changing the pattern of food production and consumption, including sustainable food and nutrition system related to consumption. This study aimed to explore the components of a sustainable diet among the factors that affect people’s food choices. Methods This qualitative study was carried out using an in-depth interview with 33 individuals aged 30–64 years old living in different areas of Tehran. Data collection, data analysis and theoretical conceptualization were performed simultaneously. MAXQDA 10 software was used for managing and organizing the data. Results In this paper, the findings are categorized according to the key components of a sustainable diet in five themes: “Health and Nutrition”, “Food and Agriculture Security”, “Environment and Ecosystems”, “Markets, food trade and production chains”, “social, cultural, and policy factors” were categorized. Meanwhile, the components of the “Health and Nutrition” domain had the highest contribution and the components of the two domains “food and agriculture” and “environment and ecosystems” had the lowest role based on the participants’ perception in this study. Conclusion Considering to the low importance of the components of a sustainable diet in food choices of the community, promoting the individual awareness of sustainable diet components, clarifying the importance of food choices in creating environmental impacts and leading the national macro policies in the field food and nutrition toward sustainable diet goals are essential.

This study analyzed the relationship of economic development, population density, and the number of vehicles on environmental degradation from 31 provinces in Indonesia for the period 2011-2019. Panel data analysis, which is widely used to examine issues that could not be studied in either cross-section or time-series alone, is used herein. The empirical results support the hypothesis on the direction of causality from those three factors of environmental damage in the country. The results concluded that economic development, population density, and the number of vehicles impacted on environmental degradation in Indonesia. The smallest cross-section random effect indicates the lowest environmental quality when all factors are fixed. The empirical findings provide important policy implications for Indonesia and it will direct its economic development model towards a green economic one. On the other hand, the growth of the population should be equalized with growth in human development. The distribution of population should be equalized among provinces by opening a new economic cluster to supply new work-fields. In addition, it should be for the country to create a more-educated population in order to protect environmental quality. Despite the unstoppable growth of vehicles, the government should implement the development of eco-friendly combustion technology besides reducing fuel consumption. Moreover, the road-making by plastic-based material can be considered to prevent land damage from plastic waste and might also recycle plastics which has caused pollution in Indonesia.

Facing rapid ecological degradation in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau (QTP), the determination of priority areas for conservation (CPAs) based on ecosystem services (ESs) is a key step for nature conservation and sustainable development. However, the trade-off between services makes the plan of maintaining protected areas (PAs) a challenge. In this study, by quantifying a variety of essential ESs in the QTP from 2000 to 2015, we used the multi-criteria ordered weighted average method to balance the trade-offs and determine the key CPAs for ES conservation. We found that the multi-criteria based selection of CPAs leads to higher (1.35) and more balanced ES protection efficiency (PE) than the single strategy. The CPAs obtained based on the logical framework of this paper are mainly located in the southeastern QTP and cover an area of 12.78 % of the QTP (330,124.76 km2). The comprehensive PE of ES was 1.68, and the PE of carbon storage, water yield, soil conservation, and cultural service were 2.20, 2.17, 4.54, and 1.59, respectively. Additionally, compared with the existing PA settings, our results can increase the proportion of biodiversity of amphibians and birds by more than 12 %. The framework of CPAs selection in this paper can provide a reference for the government’s growing nature conservation affairs, which will contribute to sustainable development.

Background The healthcare sector is a major contributor to climate change and there are international calls to mitigate environmental degradation through more sustainable forms of clinical care. The UK healthcare sector has committed to net zero carbon by 2040 and sustainable healthcare is a nationally mandated outcome for all UK graduating doctors who must demonstrate their ability to address social, economic, and environmental challenges. Bristol Medical School piloted successful Sustainability in Quality Improvement (SusQI) workshop, but identified challenges translating classroom learning into clinical practice. This paper aims to identify and address those challenges. Methods We conducted five focus groups that identified and iteratively explored barriers and facilitators to practice among medical students, comparing a range of experiences to generate a conceptual model. We then combined our findings with behaviour change theory to generate educational recommendations. Results Students that applied their learning to the clinical workplace were internally motivated and self-determined but needed time and opportunity to complete projects. Other students were cautious of disrupting established hierarchies and practices or frustrated by institutional inertia. These barriers impacted on their confidence in suggesting or achieving change. A minority saw sustainable healthcare as beyond their professional role. Conclusions We present a series of theoretically informed recommendations. These include wider curricular engagement with concepts of sustainable clinical practice; supportive workplace enablement strategies such as workplace champions and co-creation of improvement goals; and time and headspace for students to engage through structured opportunities for credit-bearing project work.

In the face of the current scenario of constant environmental degradation, it is recommended in Environmental Education that sensitize the student to the preservation and conservation of environmental heritage, minimizing future permanent damage. Thus, the present article discusses the aspects of environmental legislation with the perspective of becoming a parameter of teaching and learning in the school context. From a documentary and bibliographical analysis, the work describes the historical trajectory of the elaboration of Brazilian laws for specific purposes and considers the pedagogical work in the classroom as a crucial tool in this process. Starting from that study, stands out the importance of this teaching is emphasized for the full training of reflexive, critical students with an environmentalist stance.

Literature evidenced that environmental degradation creates hurdles in economic development. So, this study highlights the leading macroeconomic indicators which affect the environment and investigates the nexus among FDI, energy utilization, economic development, and environmental pollution for ASEAN nations from 1990 to 2018. Panel Autor Regressive Distributive lag (ARDL) methodology is used to examine the impact of economic growth, foreign direct investment and energy use on environment degradation. Different panel unit roots (Im, Pesaran and Shin W-stat, Levin, Lin & Chu, ADF - Fisher Chi-square, PP - Fisher Chi-square) tests are applied to confirm the intergradation order, and results confirm that there exits I (0) and I(1) order of intergradation. There exists a unidirectional relationship between energy consumption and carbon emission of CO2 and CO2 to foreign direct investment in the long run. While in the short run, there does not exist any relationship. The results confirm the existence EKC hypothesis, which confirms there exits negative and positive effects of GDP and square of GDP on carbon emission. Hence this study concludes that its essential to develop some strategies and policies to guarantee economic stability. Additionally, reliable and sustainable power resources should be used for positive environmental changes. The carbon dioxide emission should be reduced for the GDP growth by utilizing different eco-technologies and renewable energy resources, which can nullify the effect of emission of CO2 to maintain the greenhouse environment.

The paper presents selected results of sociological research conducted in 2019 in the Murmansk Oblast that allows comparing estimates and opinions of the population of single-industry towns and cities with diversified economy concerning some aspects of self-development of territorial communities. The research revealed a low degree of interaction between the society and local authorities. The most acute problems of self-development include rising prices, unemployment, unsatisfactory work of housing and communal services, alcoholism, environmental degradation. It is established, that the inhabitants perceive the importance of the strategy of economic development for their city, but on the condition of solidarity between the local government and population in its elaboration and realization. Divergence in assessments of compared groups of cities decreased significantly compared to 2008–2010 due to a growth of positive assessments for single-industry towns, which indicates the effectiveness of measures to improve the socio-economic situation in single-industry towns taken at different levels of government.

China's unprecedented urbanization has come at the cost of environmental degradation, which increasingly appears to be holding back migration to bustling municipal districts. Escaping from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou has become a hot topic in recent years. But in fact, small and medium-sized cities also show signs of population decentralization. The aim of this paper is to reveal the impact of environmental pollution on the decentralization of urban population in China. Based on the panel data of over 227 prefecture-level cities and municipalities directly under the central government, the sensitivity of municipal population to PM2.5 concentration was empirically studied. The results showed that PM2.5 concentrations generally had the effect of driving away the population of municipal districts, but this was most pronounced in first-tier and fourth-tier cities rather than second-tier and third-tier cities. The panel quantile estimates further confirm this finding that megacities and small and micro cities rather than small and medium-sized cities are more vulnerable to environmental pollution, which is a reminder that Chinese policymakers must not focus on the environmental problems of megacities alone, but must prevent environmental degradation from hollowing out the population of small cities and towns.

One of the most critical problems of today is the environmental policies with the focus on economy. Despite the many efforts of global organizations, environmental pollution is the subject of human beings. For this, the most polluting countries attract the attention of researchers. Many studies produce economy-centered environmental policies for the USA. However, the asymmetric effect of natural resources on environmental pollution has been neglected in the literature. In this paper, the effects of economic growth, renewable energy, biocapacity, and natural resources on the ecological footprint are addressed within the framework of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis over the period 1980-2017. Empirical findings confirm that economic growth and biocapacity increase environmental degradation, while renewable energy consumption helps reduce environmental damage. More specifically, when the results are analyzed in terms of natural resources, positive shocks in natural resources contribute to reducing environmental damage, while negative shocks in it negatively affect the environmental quality. The paper presents important policy implications for economy-centered environmental issues.

The present study aims to close this gap in the literature by exploring the effect of public-private partnerships in energy and financial development on Brazil’s ecological footprint by considering the impact of renewable energy and economic growth using data spanning from 1983 to 2017. The study utilized several techniques such as ARDL, FMOLS, DOLS, and CCR to examine the relationship between ecological footprint and the determinants, while the Gradual shift causality test was utilized to capture the causal linkage between the series in the presence of structural break. The outcome of the Maki Cointegration test revealed evidence of a long-run association among the variables of interest. Furthermore, the results of the ARDL, FMOLS, DOLS, and CCR tests revealed that economic growth and public and private investment in energy increase environmental degradation while both renewable energy and financial development mitigates it. Moreover, the Gradual shift causality test revealed a bidirectional causal linkage between ecological footprint and economic growth. The present study recommends establishing a forum that will foster public and private partnerships to enhance communication, which will create collaboration for new initiatives for green technological innovations. Additionally, the financial market can be assisted by the government by formulating a framework that would promote low carbon technology development.

Cities influence climate change since they consume large amounts of energy leading to higher carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and environmental degradation. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis establishes that renewable energy consumption in India can significantly offset CO2 emissions. The application of the “Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework (CSCAF)” on the use of renewable energy (RE) for electricity in 45 Indian cities under smart city mission and its results are presented here. The analysis show that the penetration of RE in cities is low. Apart from electricity generation within cities, the best performing ones could successfully harness RE from outside city limits through regulatory incentives. The potential and strategies to harness more RE in cities is presented. The challenges in higher RE adoption in cities and required policy recommendations are also discussed.

Наведено також власні дослідження з ураження щитоподібної залози у хворих на остеоартроз, які проживали чи працювали в зонах екологічного неблагополуччя. Звернута увага на пріоритетність подібних досліджень з огляду на тенденції до прогресуючого погіршення довкілля.

Modern food systems have contributed to extensive environmental degradation, resulting in calls for a planetary health diet that dramatically reduces the consumption of animal-source foods. However, animal-source foods provide key micronutrients vital to healthy diets. Planetary boundaries and local contexts must be considered to facilitate regenerative and sustainable livestock production.

A bulk of literature has examined the asymmetric impact of renewable energy consumption on CO2 emissions by using the advanced econometric approach. While the asymmetric role of renewable energy production in the CO2 equation is largely unknown, our present study quantifies the asymmetric relationship between renewable energy production, natural resources, economic progress, and CO2 emission for Pakistan by using the NARDL approach. It is found that positive change in renewable energy production has a positive effect on CO2 emissions, while a negative change in renewable energy production has a negative effect on CO2 emissions in the long run. Furthermore, a positive and negative change in natural resources contributes negatively to CO2 emissions in the long run. The results reveal that a positive change in economic progress significantly increases CO2 emissions in the long run. Based on findings, Pakistan’s government should encourage local and international investors to increase their investment in the production of renewable energy by reducing environmental degradation.

In terms of attaining the objectives of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Asian economies are considered as laggards, and one of the major problems faced by these economies is the issue of environmental degradation. For addressing this pertaining issue, a policy-level reorientation might be necessary. In this view, this study aims to explore the impact of urbanization, renewable energy consumption, financial development, agriculture, and economic growth on CO2 emissions in 15 Asian economies over 1990–2014. The empirical evidence demonstrates that urbanization, financial development, and economic growth increase CO2 emissions, renewable energy consumption reduces CO2 emissions, and the impact of agriculture is insignificant. Impulse response function and variance decomposition techniques are used to test the causality among the variables. Based on the study outcomes, a comprehensive SDG-oriented policy framework has been recommended, so that these economies can make progression toward attaining the objectives of SDG 13 and SDG 7. This study contributed to the literature by recommending this SDG-oriented policy framework, which encapsulates economic growth and its drivers.

This study aims to fill the gaps in previous research in the form of development studies between production and consumption biofuels, green economic growth and environmental degradation in 6 selected Asia Pacific countries (Australia, China, India, Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand) by considering the determinants during the period 2007-2020. This study used a simultaneous panel model approach. The important findings of this study are grouped into 4 analysis models. First, biofuels consumption, capital formation, labor and foreign direct investment have a positive effect on biofuels production. Second, biofuels production, foreign direct investment, GDP per capita and trade openness have a positive effect on biofuels consumption. Third, biofuels production, biofuels consumption and technological innovation have a positive effect on green economic growth, while militarization has a negative effect. Fourth, biofuels production, biofuels consumption, green economic growth and cleaner energy have a negative effect on environmental degradation, while population and poverty have a positive effect. The development of biofuels oil is aimed at realizing the transition from fossil-based energy to biomass-based energy which is expected to be environmentally friendly and sustainable. Low-resource communities that rely on the environment face challenges in the forms of climate change and the overuse of natural resources. Behaviour science offers methods and strategies to mitigate behaviours that contribute to environmental degradation, as well as promote the adoption of desirable behaviours. We investigated the attitudes and beliefs of vulnerable communities. We conducted surveys across five villages on Selayar Island, a small island in Sulawesi Indonesia. Our results suggest a willingness to participate in behaviour-based programmes and concern for families. When offering development programmes to communities, the needs of the community should inform the design and implementation process.

The textile industry is one of the most complex sectors in relation to environmental degradation, both with regard to the materials used from petroleum and its chemical processes and during its manufacture and disposal. Therefore, new possibilities for more sustainable materials are emerging. One of the options is the use of microorganisms, as the biomaterial formed is considered biodegradable and has potential use for several sectors, including the fashion industry. The bacteria of the Komagataeibacter xylinus family present in the probiotic drink Kombucha, is a great source for the production of bacterial cellulose (BC) and has the potential to replace fabrics in the production of clothing and accessories. Therefore, this article carried out an integrative literature review, addressing in the results and discussions the problem surrounding the pollution generated by the Textile Industry, the advantages and disadvantages of bacterial cellulose as a bio-textile and how these issues can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Finally, it is believed that the textile industrial system should be revised, as it is still incongruous on both environmental and social issues. Therefore, thinking about new, more sustainable materials, such as bacterial cellulose, is a form of mitigation and consistent with the SDGs.

To tackle the issue of climate change and environmental degradation debates regarding carbon neutrality is on the rise. Regional Comprehensive Economic Cooperation (RCEP), the leading trading union, covers nearly third of global economy, world population, is responsible for thirty percent of global trade and global gross domestic product. The existent study tests the impact of financial, economic, political, and composite risk on consumption-based carbon dioxide emissions (CCO2) in selected RCEP economies during the period of 1990 to 2020. The empirical analysis consists of cross-sectional dependence, slope heterogeneity, cross-sectional augmented panel unit root test, Westerlund cointegration, second-generation cross-section augmented autoregressive distributed lags model (CS-ARDL), and panel causality test. Further, we explore the role of imports, renewable energy supply, exports, and gross domestic product per-capita on CCO2. The empirical results suggest that the less political risk help to mitigate while the lower financial, economic, and composite risk increase CCO2 emissions in selected RCEP economies. Moreover, exports and renewable energy supply show mitigating effect, whereas imports show upsurge in CCO2. Additionally, a bidirectional causality exists between exports and CCO2, imports and CCO2, GDP per-capita and CCO2, political risk and CCO2, and renewable energy and CCO2 emissions, while a one-way causality from financial risk, composite risk, and economic risk to CCO2. Renewable energy supplies along with the improvement in sub-components of political risk, for instance, corruption, government stability, would help to effectively tackle the issue of CCO2 emissions.

The green aspects of brand equity appeal to environmentally conscious guests due to rising awareness and prevention of environmental degradation in the tourism sector. The implementation of green practices in the hotels can be one of the ways for achieving the goal of sustainability. The results represent the survey of guests visiting the green hotels and their perception of green practices and hotel branding. The survey involves empirical data of 400 customers using a structured questionnaire, and the model building for green branding constructs is done by employing PLS-SEM (structural equation model). The results indicate a positive impact of green brand image, green brand awareness, and green perceived value on green brand equity construct. This innovative model of brand equity has relevance and application in the hospitality sector and other services sector. The study specifically considers the aspects of a developing nation like India, as following tourism in a responsible manner is an evolving field. The study conveys the representation of a successful brand image by the hotels involved in green branding. The results support managers in respect of brand strategies for a green hotel, in aggregation with the sustainable and branding literature for hotels.

A field study was conducted in Northern Bangladesh, Rangpur district to observe the impact of tobacco cultivation on the environment as well as to characterize contributing factors motivating tobacco cultivation. Information was collected from the tobacco cultivators by a questionnaire survey that was conducted in four mostly tobacco cultivated upazilas, namely Badargonj, Taragonj, Rangpur Sadar, Gangachara of Rangpur district. Information from non-tobacco cultivators was also collected from Mithapukur Upazila. Survey findings revealed that 62.16% of respondents believed that soil productivity is decreasing in the tobacco field and 70.27% of tobacco farmers were using more chemical fertilizer per year than the previous years. More than half (54.05%) of respondents reported that tobacco is replacing native food crops. Moreover, 51.30% of tobacco farmers were facing various health hazards due to tobacco cultivation. The present study also investigated that 97.14% of farmers got a high benefit along with 89.19% of respondent’s availed organizational support from tobacco marketing companies. The overall satisfaction rate with the price was 80.56%, which was the main contributory factor for tobacco cultivation in the study area. The survey results also identified that farmers from Mithapukur Upazila gave up tobacco cultivation due to health hazards and unnecessarily underestimating the grade of tobacco leaf by the buyer company. Environmental degradation and climate change are two important issues that threaten human survival and sustainable social development. Based on the characteristics of the same source of sulfur dioxide and greenhouse gases, we analyze the collaborative governance mechanism of carbon emission trading on sulfur dioxide. The results show that carbon emission reduction trading may not necessarily deliver sulfur dioxide reduction co-benefits. Then, we conduct an empirical using data of 30 regions in China from 1998 to 2017. The results show that the co-benefits of carbon emission trading in terms of the reduction of sulfur dioxide are regionally heterogeneous. The carbon emission trading policies implemented in Beijing, Chongqing, Hubei, and Guangdong have realized collaborative governance on sulfur dioxide. However, the carbon emission trading policies implemented in Tianjin and Shanghai have not realized collaborative governance on sulfur dioxide. Moreover, Chongqing has the highest average annual sulfur dioxide reduction co-benefits, followed by Guangdong. The gap of sulfur dioxide reduction co-benefits between Beijing and Hubei's synergistic emission reduction effect is small. Moreover, the sulfur dioxide reduction co-benefits of carbon emission trading are mainly achieved by reducing fossil energy consumption. Meanwhile, the carbon emission trading implemented in Beijing also delivers sulfur dioxide reduction co-benefits by improving pollution reduction technology.

PurposeGiven the pace of global environmental degradation, companies and individuals alike are exploring ways and means of protecting the environment. In this context, the attitudes of hoteliers and their employees toward sustainability are key to the successful implementation of these practices. This paper aims to consider the impact of attitude development and COVID-19 on the sustainability performance of hotels. The study also explores contributions made by hotels to environmental sustainability and society more generally.Design/methodology/approachThe study is based on interviews and survey questionnaires completed by employees of five-star hotels in India, and qualitative methods were used to process the data.FindingsThe findings of this study confirm the devastating impact of COVID-19 on both economic and societal sustainability in what otherwise would be a profitable sector of the economy.Practical implicationsThe study has implications for hoteliers, the government, environmental agencies and for employees and could assist with the formulation of recovery packages by government and in the development of new standard operating procedures to enable hotels to step-up on the self-recovery path.Originality/valueThe paper provides an analysis of the direct effects of the pandemic on financial sustainability and its mediating impact on the efforts of hotels to attain sustainable environment.

Environmental sustainability concerns are increasing worldwide; both developing and developed countries face environmental degradation. Literature has highlighted the environment-growth nexus; however, the impact of environmental-related technologies on the environment is ignored in early studies. This study aims to explore the implications of financial development, environmental-related technologies, research and development, energy intensity, renewable energy production, natural resource depletion, and temperature in a sustainable environment in Canada by using a time series model, i.e., dynamic ARDL simulations (Jordan and Philips 2018) with data from 1989 to 2020. The examined findings of the dynamic ARDL simulations indicate that environmental-related technologies in Canada help to reduce environmental degradation both in the short run and in the long run. At the same time, financial development, energy intensity, renewable energy production, research and development, natural resource depletion, and temperature causes boost the environmental degradation in Canada. To achieve sustainable environment, Canada needs to improve innovations in the environmental-related technologies for achieving sustainable growth and environment.

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of energy consumption and environmental degradation (CO2 emissions) on economic growth in Bangladesh covering the periods of 1972 to 2018 by employing the Johansen cointegration test, VECM approach, and Granger causality test. The Johansen cointegration result indicates that gross capital formation (GCF), labor, Electricity power consumption (EPC), energy consumption (EC) has a positive and statistically significant effect on economic growth (RGDP) while environmental degradation (carbon dioxide emissions) has an inverse effect on it. The results of VECM show that there exists a long-run causal nexus among the variables and there is short-run causality running from the capital formation and electricity power consumption to the economic growth while there is no short-run causality from the labor, energy consumption, carbon emission to the economic growth. The causality test shows that there exist a unidirectional causal relationship from economic growth to labor, EPC to RGDP, GCF to labor, EC to GCF, carbon emissions (CO2) to GCF, labor to EPC, EC to labor, CO2 to labor, and carbon emissions to EPC and a bi-directional causal nexus between GCF and RGDP; GCF and labor; EPC and carbon emission in Bangladesh. Air pollution can have a repercussion on human health. Economic activity and non-renewable use can lead to pollution. CO2 emissions are widely used by previous studies as a proxy for environmental degradation. CO2 emissions exhibit upward trends in most countries including developing countries. The environmental issue has set alarm bells ringing; thus, this study embarks on an investigation into the impacts of energy use, economic growth and rural population growth on CO2 emissions. The novelty of this study is to explore the impact of rural population growth on CO2 emissions. The panel ARDL method is employed to analyze data from 1990 to 2015 in 9 selected developing countries with different geographical regions. The results disclose that in the long run, higher energy use and economic growth can increase CO2 emissions while rural population growth does not cause any change in CO2 emissions. Rural population growth does not also influence CO2 emissions in the short run. However, energy consumption and economic growth can be detrimental to the environment in the short run. Therefore, these findings are important for policymakers to formulate policies. More renewable energy sources, such as hydro and biofuel, should be used instead of non-renewable energy sources, such as oil and coal. This paper performs Fourier cointegration and causality tests to analyze the effect of renewable energy generation, globalization, and agricultural activities on ecological footprint and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in BRIC countries for the period 1971–2016. The Fourier ADL cointegration test supports a long-run relationship between the considered variables in Brazil and China. The long-term elasticities indicate that globalization increases the pollution indicators, while renewable energy generation significantly reduces environmental pressure in China. Moreover, globalization increases CO2 emissions, while renewable energy generation improves environmental quality in Brazil. The causality results show the existence of bidirectional causality between agriculture and environmental degradation; unidirectional relationships from globalization to the ecological footprint and CO2 emissions; and renewable energy generation to the ecological indicators. Overall, these findings reveal the importance of renewable energy in combating environmental degradation. Based on the above results, renewable energy generation can significantly reduce environmental pollution in Brazil and China. However, renewable energy does not affect environmental pressure in Russia and India. Therefore, these countries should differentiate the current renewable energy generation policies to achieve their sustainable development goals.

Nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) based energy efficiency can conserve electricity by creating awareness with the behaviour change and shrinking CO2 emissions to the environment. However, the lack of effective models and strategies is problematic for policymakers to forecast quantitatively CO2 emissions. This paper aims to study the impact of NILM on CO2 emissions in Malaysia. Firstly, the predictive models were established based on Malaysia open data from 1996 to 2018. After that, scenario simulations were conducted to predict CO2 emissions and NILM impact on environmental degradation in 2019-2030. The results revealed that a 12% reduction in electricity consumption due to NILM could contribute to a 10.2% shrinkage of the total CO2 emissions. The result also statistically confirmed Malaysia to achieve a 45% reduction of CO2 intensity in 2030. With NILM, the carbon reduction can be further enhanced to 60.2%. The outcomes provide valuable references and supporting evidence for policymakers in planning effective carbon emission control policies and energy efficiency measures. The work can be extended by developing a decision support system and user interfaces access via the cloud.

The Yellow River Source National Park (YRSP) is one of the most sensitive and fragile ecological regions in the world. The historical intensive grazing and climate change have resulted in ecological degradation that threatens the wildlife and livestock. Exploring the sustainable strategy is urgent for policy makers to meet the demands for wild ungulates and livestock. In our study, the grassland ecological carrying capability (GECC) was assessed based on the updated grass-livestock balance that considered the grass competition from wild ungulates. The balances between grass and livestock, and GECC and grassland pressure index (GPI) in the YRSP were measured through overlay analysis and geostatistic analysis. The results showed that: (1) the ratio of livestock to wild ungulates in the research area was approximately 4.56: 1, in which the proportion of livestock was 81.75% and the actual number of livestock was 33.84 × 104 standard sheep units; (2) Under the scenario of minimum grazing utilisation rate, the theoretical grazing capacity and GECC were 37.83 × 104 standard sheep units and −0.13, respectively. Under the maximum grazing utilisation rate, the theoretical grazing capacity and GECC were 41.93 × 104 standard sheep units and −0.21, respectively. Since GECC in both scenarios were both less than 0, the grassland was considered to be in surplus and the livestock was not overloaded. However, GPI in the two scenarios were 0.87 and 0.79, respectively, both of which exceeded the warning line of 0.70. Based on GECC, we recommend that the sustainable strategy in YRSP is either to increase the supplementary feeding about 6.40 × 104 standard sheep units or reduce the grazing livestock by about 3.50 × 104 standard sheep units.

This article discusses the socio-cultural consequences of small-scale artisanal gold mining on the archaeological record and other heritage resources at Awudua Dada, located in the Prestia-Huni Valley District of the Western Region, Ghana. The settlement witnessed vibrant commercial exchanges between Wassa and Dutch traders in the mid-seventeenth century because of its abundant gold resources, much of which was exchanged for novel European trade goods such as varieties of alcoholic beverages, guns, gunpowder, and finished metal products among many others. Currently abandoned and desolate, groups of small-scale artisanal gold miners continue to prospect gold there, and along the banks and bed of the Ankobra River which lies close-by. Archaeological, historical, and ethno historical research constituted the principal methods used to derive data for the study which revealed that mining had not only negatively impacted the archaeological record and other cultural resources there but had also caused significant environmental degradation.

The purpose of the paper is to examine the relationship between green human resource management (GHRM) practices such as green recruitment, green training, green performance management, green reward, green involvement and millennial employee retention in the hotel industry in Bangladesh. The study examined the moderating effect of psychological empowerment on the relationship between GHRM practices and millennials’ retention. This study used a survey questionnaire of 394 employees in Bangladeshi 3-star to 5-star hotels to test hypotheses using SmartPLS. The study found that green reward and green training have significant relationships with millennials’ retention in hotels. The results showed psychological empowerment as a significant moderator on the relationship between three GHRM practices, green training, green performance management, green and reward and millennials’ retention.
