The study sought to examine the role of problematic internet usage in the risk of addiction to online gambling among undergraduate students in universities in Kenya. The study utilized Behaviourist Theory and Social Learning Theory. Ex-post facto research design was used for this study. The target population for the study was 97284 comprising all the undergraduate students in four universities and the accessible population was 2nd and 3rd year students comprising of 18911. The sample size comprised of 391 undergraduate students, 16 peer counsellors and four (4) student counsellors making a total of 411 participants. Data was collected by use of a questionnaire, an in-depth interview schedule and focus group discussion. Each focus group discussion comprised of four participants. Purposive sampling was used to select the universities of study. Purposive and simple random sampling was used to select the respondents. One university with similar characteristics with the sampled universities was purposively selected for piloting to ensure reliability of the research instruments. Descriptive statistics of frequencies, percentages and means were used to analyse data. Chi square was used to test the null hypotheses while t-test was used to compare the study variables. Quantitative data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 23. Qualitative data was coded and thematically analysed. The pre-test was administered to and the instruments were modified accordingly. According to the study findings, problematic internet usage was significant to online gambling the reliability coefficient of problematic internet usage was 0.829, online gambling was 0.875.

The Library at the University of Derby recently collaborated with EBSCO Information Services to co-create unique search interfaces and introduce a series of innovations aimed at improving the user experience. These innovations included a range of clearer icons linking through to full-text journal articles and abstract-only resources subscribed to by the Library, apps linking to additional online resource content and a fresh interface design and style. Billed as Library Plus 2.0, the project aimed to significantly improve the accessibility and visibility of the Library’s online resources, while providing an enhanced user experience shaped through consultation and engagement. This article looks at the impact of the Library Plus 2.0 changes and identifies improvements for future implementation. The work contributes towards the Library’s digital strategies and the continual enhancement of our core systems. The author presented this work at the University of Derby’s 13th Annual Learning & Teaching Conference in July 2018.

A Hydrostatic Levelling System (HLS) has been installed at Diamond Light Source. 8 sensors have been positioned along a 60 metre portion of the floor of the Storage Ring and the Experimental Hall, stretching out along a typical beamline route from Insertion Device to sample. 7 of the sensors are installed on the thick, reinforced concrete floor of the Experimental Hall which is supported on piles and the last sensor is mounted on the much thinner concrete floor of the peripheral walkway which has no piles. The foundations and floor were designed to achieve settlements measuring 1 micron per 10 metres per hour and 10 microns per 10 metres per day. A larger range was specified of 250 microns per 10 metres per year on the Experimental Hall floor and 100 microns per 10 metres per year in the Storage Ring to account for longer term settlement effects and seasonal variation and the HLS has been installed to try and measure these very small movements. Results after one year of operation are presented.

Asthma is one of the commonest of chronic illnesses affecting children. Parental smoking has been considered to have an effect on this. In an attempt to clarify the relationship between parental smoking and the prevalence of childhood asthma we interviewed parents of 97.5% of the children aged 3-11 years registered with a large urban British general practice. We found a lifetime prevalence of asthma of 19.6%, 23.2% of boys and 15.9% of girls. Asthma was more common, 37.6%, in children who also had eczema. Parental smoking appeared to increase the prevalence of asthma. This was more marked when both parents smoked.

Background: Atopic eczema has become more common during recent decades, but few studies have looked at its prevalence in the general community. Objective: Our purpose was to ascertain the prevalence of atopic eczema, its age of onset, and its relationship to breast-feeding and ear piercing in a general practice population. Methods: Children ( N = 1104), aged 3 to 11 years, were identified from a computerized register in a socially and ethnically mixed English general practice population of 13,314. Of these, 1077 children (97,6% recruitment) were interviewed with parents or guardians, and the resultant data were recorded on a survey form. Results: The lifetime occurrence of atopic eczema was 20% in boys (12% in the past year) and 19% in girls (11 % in the past year). prevalence in the past year was 10% to 14% in boys aged 3 to 11 years but fell in girls from 15% at 3 to 5 years to 8% at 9 to 11 years. Atopic eczema developed in the first 12 months of life in 60% of the children who had the condition, and it developed in the first 6 months of life in three quarters of these children. Ear piercing had been performed in 35% of girls and 3% of boys and was most prevalent in social classes 3, 4, and 5. More than half the girls aged 9 to 11 years had pierced ears. Breast-feeding did not affect the prevalence of atopic eczema. Conclusion: The lifetime prevalence of atopic eczema was 20% in children aged 3 to 11 years. There was no evidence that ear piercing perpetuated eczema in this age group. Breast-feeding did not protect against the development of atopic eczema.
