Chiller system plays an important role of maintaining room temperature constantly by supplying chilled water to Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning(HVAC)or area room cooler equipment during plant normal operation or accident condition. Chiller failures are one of the most frequently occurring equipment failures. If the types of chiller failures are analyzed and grouped thoroughly, it would be helpful to make chiller maintenance strategy at the plants. That would enhance equipment reliability of chiller in the end. In this paper, chiller failure data during three years were analyzed and categorized by specific failure code. In addition, the various proposals to improve equipment reliability of chiller were suggested such as Preventive Maintenance Optimization(PMO) strategy and performance monitoring reinforcement and so on.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) has developed and implemented the maintenance effectiveness monitoring (MR) programs for the operating nuclear power plants. MR programs are developed by reflecting design characteristics of the operating nuclear power plants to monitor the plant performance for improving the safety and reliability. Recently, KHNP has developed the MR program for APR1400 safety related systems to establish the advanced maintenance system and will verify the suitability of the MR program through evaluating initial performance. Consequently, it is expected that the safety of the new plant will be improved by developing and implementing the MR program.

KHNP (Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co.) defines and manages equipment of Nuclear Power Plants systematically with functional importance determination of each equipment for efficient maintenance and optimal preventive maintenance. But the existing functional importance determinations have some different results between the plants, systems and engineers due to gap of understanding of classification criteria because they have been done in terms of equipment level rather than function level. so that caused the repeated work. To make up for this problem improve methodology of functional importance determination using MR (Maintenance Rule) and do classification of equipment for new nuclear power plants based on function level. In addition, methodical documentation for basis of importance determination is done to help that system engineers can easily understand and use.
