Purpose Using the theory of planned behavior as a theoretical base, this study aims to examine the effect of the personality attributes, risk-taking, creativity and locus of control on the entrepreneurial intentions of US business college students. The authors replicated previous studies from around the world but performed the research during the Covid-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach The authors surveyed 353 students, comparing those with entrepreneurial intentions (n = 213) versus those without entrepreneurial intentions (n = 140). Findings The authors found that risk-taking and creativity both significantly and positively predicted entrepreneurial intentions, but locus of control did not have a significant impact. Practical implications Contextually, the authors performed this study during the widespread complications of the Covid-19 pandemic. The authors advise business educators to initiate programs that encourage student entrepreneurship by nurturing creativity and offering educational resources that assist students in reducing the perceived risk of entrepreneurship. Originality/value The authors seek to increase awareness among business educators of the significance of entrepreneurship as a desirable career. The authors believe that one impact from the Covid-19 pandemic has been an expanded interest among students to start their own businesses. The authors propose that creative measures introduced into the business school curriculum by business educators will enhance students’ desire to take risks to create their own businesses.

As of March 2021, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) had led to >500,000 deaths in the United States, and the state of Tennessee had the fifth highest number of cases per capita. We reviewed the Tennessee Department of Health COVID-19 surveillance and chart-abstraction data during March 15‒August 15, 2020. Patients who died from COVID-19 were more likely to be older, male, and Black and to have underlying conditions (hereafter comorbidities) than case-patients who survived. We found 30.4% of surviving case-patients and 20.3% of deceased patients had no comorbidity information recorded. Chart-abstraction captured a higher proportion of deceased case-patients with >1 comorbidity (96.3%) compared with standard surveillance deaths (79.0%). Chart-abstraction detected higher rates of each comorbidity except for diabetes, which had similar rates among standard surveillance and chart-abstraction. Investing in public health data collection infrastructure will be beneficial for the COVID-19 pandemic and future disease outbreaks.

Background: The use of the 21-gene recurrence score assay (RS) has reduced chemotherapy (CT) administration in patients with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER-2 negative, lymph-node negative, early stage breast cancer (ESBC). Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) accounts for up to 15% of all breast cancers. This study uses real world data to assess (1) the effect of RS testing on treatment decision making in patients with ILC and (2) the economic benefit of testing in this subgroup. Methods: From October 2011 to February 2019, a retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted on HR+, HER-2 negative, lymph-node negative, ESBC patients with ILC who had RS testing in Ireland. For the decision impact analysis, a survey of Irish breast medical oncologists presumed that, without RS testing, CT would be recommended to patients with histological grade (G) 2 and 3 tumours and not for G1 tumours. In accordance with TAILOR-x results, patients were classified overall as low risk (RS≤25) and high risk (RS>25) and patients ≤50 years old were low risk (RS 0-15), intermediate risk (RS 16-25), and high risk (RS>25). Data were collected from electronic patient records. Descriptive statistics were used. Cost data were obtained from the National Healthcare Pricing Regulatory Authority. The economic analysis was adjusted for changing treatment and assay costs over the study period. Results: 166 patients with ILC were identified. Mean age was 59 years. Mean tumour size was 2.3cm (range 0.7-5.8). The majority had G2 tumors (n=152, 92%) with a small number of G3 (n=7, 4%) and G1 (n=7,4%). Overall, 153 patients (92.2%) had a low RS (≤25), 12 (7.2%) had high RS (>25), and 1(0.6%) was unknown. All 12 patients with RS>25 had G2 tumours, 6/12 (50%) had tumour size >3cm, 4(33.3%) were PR+ and 8(66.7%) were PR negative. In 29/166 (17.5%) patients, aged ≤50 at diagnosis, RS was ≤15 in 16(55%), 16-20 in 6(21%), 21-25 in 5(17%), >25 in 1(3.5%) and unknown in 1(3.5%). The majority of these patients (27, 93%) had G2 tumours, 1 had G1 and 1 had G3. Post RS testing 124 patients (74.5%) had a change in CT recommendation; all from CT to hormone therapy. In total, only 35 patients (21%) received CT. In this group, RS was 0-15 in 3(9%), RS 16-25 in 19(54%), RS >25 in 12 (34%) and unknown in 1(3%). Eight of 35 patients (23%) were aged ≤50. The most common CT regimen administered was docetaxel plus cyclophosphamide (TC). RS testing achieved a 78% reduction in chemotherapy use. This resulted in savings of €900,000 in treatment costs. With the incorporation of the assay cost, the net savings totalled approximately €400,000. Conclusions: Ireland was the first public health care system to reimburse the 21-gene recurrence score assay in Europe. There is limited evidence demonstrating the benefits of RS in ILC. In our study, the use of the test has resulted in a 78% reduction in chemotherapy use in an Irish ILC patient population and a substantial cost saving (greater than €400,000) to the Irish Healthcare System. With quality function deployment (QFD) as its basis, the product design team is instrumental in promoting sustainability by incorporating relevant requirements in the early stages of the design process. The domain literature, however, contains significant gaps, especially for food products. First, the current literature fails to consider the requirements of all relevant stakeholders, which are crucial to sustainability. Second, while some offer various models of fuzzy QFD – multiple-attribute decision-making (QFD-MADM), they fail to comprehensively address the underlying interdependencies of decision parameters in the QFD. Furthermore, the majority of the works on QFD-MADM limit themselves to product planning while losing control over other subsequent phases of product development. Thus, this work attempts to advance these gaps by proposing an integrated multiphase fuzzy QFD-MADM framework that combines QFD, analytic hierarchy process (AHP), decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), and analytic network process (ANP) along with fuzzy set theory. A case study in a Philippine meat processing industry was implemented to demonstrate the proposed approach. The results of the case study show the crucial decision parameters for all phases, which would serve as inputs to design teams. Unlike previous models, the proposed framework preserves the transition of the priorities flow along with all four phases of product development. Thus, the stakeholder requirements are integrated into all product development stages, which is a strong indication that these requirements are addressed in each phase. Also, the proposed framework ensures that the uncertainty and the underlying complexities of interdependencies among decision parameters of the four phases of product design and development are addressed. The proposed framework contributes to sustainable product design literature in a manner that is comprehensive and analytical.

PurposeDynamic capabilities (DCs) help media firms adapt to rapidly changing environments. The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive literature review of studies of DCs in strategic management research with a view to understanding its implications for the management of media organizations. Essentially, it fertilizes on the idea that the concept of DC is useful and vital for answering various critical questions regarding the challenges that media organizations are currently facing.Design/methodology/approachThis study builds on a systematic literature reviewing design as the research methodology. It aims to identify, critically evaluate, and integrate factors, dimensions, and findings on studies of DCs in strategic management research and builds knowledge transfers to the field of strategic management research in the media industry.FindingsThe study shows that the DC framework helps media firms effectively respond to changing environments. The conceptual DC framework has implications for media strategy practice. Results indicate a considerable growth in the number of papers published related to the DCs in media organizations from 2003 to 2018.Originality/valueThe study qualifies the relevance and validity of the DC framework in strategic management research for the field of strategic media management. It explores a research agenda in this domain by precisely explaining the significant trends in the theory of DC to shape managerial strategies in the media industry.

Background: The 21 gene recurrence score (OncotypeDx ®) is reimbursed in Ireland to guide adjuvant treatment decisions for ER+, LN-negative, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative BC. There is emerging evidence supporting the clinical utility of this test in patients with LN+ disease. Although the exact cut-off for chemotherapy has not been defined in this population, SEER data support the omission of chemotherapy for patients with RS Results: In total, 294 patients were enrolled across the - nine centres. Complete data is available on 123 patients (range 38 to 75, median 54 years), which included two male patients. Of the remaining 121 (98%) patients, 49 (40%) were premenopausal, 26 (21%) perimenopausal and 46 (37%) postmenopausal. The median tumour size was 38 mm (Range 7 to 58 mm). There were 101 (82%) patients with invasive ductal carcinoma, 17 (14%) with lobular carcinoma and 5 (4%) classified as other breast histology. Seventeen patients (14%) had grade 1, 74 (60%) grade 2 and 32 (26%) grade 3 disease. There were 79 (64%) patients with 1 LN+, 35 (29%) with 2 LN+ and 9 (7%) with 3 LN+ status. Overall access to the 21 gene RS test led to a 32% reduction in chemotherapy, 112 (91%) to 72 (59%) patients. This was most notable in patients with ductal histology (91 vs 61) and grade 2 breast cancer (66 vs 41) representing a 24.4% and 20.3% reduction, respectively. Similarly patients with 1 LN+ (71 vs 46) and 2 LN+ (34 vs 21) represented a 20.3% and 9.7% reduction, respectively. This study also identified four patients aged less than 40, for whom chemotherapy was not recommended. The biggest reduction in chemotherapy occurred in women aged over 50 (62 vs 36) at 21.1%. Overall, in 65% of cases, medical oncologists deemed the RS test result significantly changed treatment recommendations. Conclusion: These findings are consistent with results from similar studies in other countries. Broader access to the 21-gene RS could result in a reduction in the use of chemotherapy in Ireland. Introduction Breast cancer patients respond differently to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) based on hormone receptor subtype. Oestrogen receptor positive/Her-2 receptor negative (ER+HER-) patients respond poorest but the effect of progesterone receptor (PR) status on response within this group has not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of PR status on response to NAC in ER+HER- breast cancer patients. Methods All patients receiving NAC over a seven-year period (2011-2017) were retrospectively identified from a prospectively maintained database within a specialised breast referral unit. Clinicopathological details were collated for all patients found to be ER+HER-. Primary outcomes including breast complete pathological response (PCR) rate and axillary PCR rate were compared between patients found to be progesterone receptor positive and negative. Secondary outcomes including grade and presence of lymphovascular invasion were also assessed. Results 206 patients were identified (151 in the ER+PR+HER- group and 55 in the ER+PR-HER- group). When compared with the PR+ group, patients found to be PR negative were more likely to achieve a breast PCR (3.3% vs 25.4%; Chi Square test; p=0.001), which was confirmed on multivariate analysis (p=0.001).In patients who were initially node positive, PR negativity was associated with a higher rate of axillary nodal PCR compared to those found to be PR positive(12.2% vs 25.5%; Chi Square test; p=0.04). ER+PR-HER- patients were more likely to have higher grade tumours but not LVI. Conclusion Over a quarter of ER+HER- patients who are PR negative will have a complete pathological response to NAC in the breast and axilla. Such patients should be considered for NAC at diagnosis. We sought to compare VNS delivery and associated changes in symptoms and function in autonomic regulation therapy via left or right cervical vagus nerve stimulation in patients with chronic heart failure (ANTHEM-HF), increase of vagal tone in heart failure (INOVATE-HF), and neural cardiac therapy for heart failure (NECTAR-HF) for hypothesis generation.Methods and resultsDescriptive statistics were used to analyse data from the public domain for differences in proportions using Pearson's chi-square test, differences in mean values using Student's unpaired t-test, and differences in changes of mean values using two-sample t-tests. Guideline-directed medical therapy recommendations were similar across studies. Fewer patients were in New York Heart Association 3, and baseline heart rate (HR) was higher in ANTHEM-HF. In INOVATE-HF, VNS was aimed at peripheral neural targets, using closed-loop delivery that required synchronization of VNS to R-wave sensing by an intracardiac lead. Pulse frequency was low (1-2 Hz) because of a timing schedule allowing ≤3 pulses of VNS following at most 25% of detected R waves. NECTAR-HF and ANTHEM-HF used open-loop VNS delivery (i.e. independent of any external signal) aimed at both central and peripheral targets. In NECTAR-HF, VNS delivery at 20 Hz caused off-target effects that limited VNS up-titration in a majority of patients. In ANTHEM-HF, VNS delivery at 10 Hz allowed up-titration until changes in HR dynamics were confirmed. Six months after VNS titration, significant improvements in both HR and HR variability occurred only in ANTHEM-HF. When ANTHEM-HF and NECTAR-HF were compared, greater improvements from baseline were observed in ANTHEM-HF in standard deviation in normal-to-normal R-R intervals (94 ± 26 to 111 ± 50 vs. 146 ± 48 to 130 ± 52 ms; P l 0.001), left ventricular ejection fraction (32 ± 7 to 37 ± 0.4 vs. 31 ± 6 to 33 ± 6; P l 0.05), and Minnesota Living with Heart Failure mean score (40 ± 14 to 21 ± 10 vs. 44 ± 22 to 36 ± 21; P l 0.002). When compared with INOVATE-HF, greater improvement in 6-min walk distance was observed in ANTHEM-HF (287 ± 66 to 346 ± 78 vs. 304 ± 111 to 334 ± 111 m; P l 0.04).ConclusionsIn this post-hoc analysis, differences in patient demographics were seen and may have caused the differential responses in symptoms and function observed in association with VNS. Major differences in technology platforms, neural targets, VNS delivery, and HR and HR variability responses could have also potentially played a very important role. Further study is underway in a randomized controlled trial with these considerations in mind.

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease, with multiple underlying inflammatory pathways and structural airway abnormalities that impact disease persistence and severity. Recent progress has been made in developing targeted asthma therapeutics, especially for subjects with eosinophilic asthma. However, there is an unmet need for new approaches to treat patients with severe and exacerbation-prone asthma, who contribute disproportionately to disease burden. Extensive deep phenotyping has revealed the heterogeneous nature of severe asthma and identified distinct disease subtypes. Acurrent challenge in the field is to translate new and emerging knowledge about different pathobiologic mechanisms in asthma into patient-specific therapies, with the ultimate goal of modifying the natural history of disease. Here, we describe the Precision Interventions for Severe and/or Exacerbation-Prone Asthma (PrecISE) Network, a groundbreaking collaborative effort of asthma researchers and biostatisticians from around the United States. The PrecISE Network was designed to conduct phase II/proof-of-concept clinical trials of precision interventions in the population with severe asthma, and is supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Using an innovative adaptive platform trial design, the PrecISE Network will evaluate up to 6 interventions simultaneously in biomarker-defined subgroups of subjects. We review the development and organizational structure of the PrecISE Network, and choice of interventions being studied. We hope that the PrecISE Network will enhance our understanding of asthma subtypes and accelerate the development of therapeutics for severe asthma.

In this chapter, the authors describe the lessons learned in responding to the various effects of the COVID-19 event that occurred from January 2020 through January 2021 on the ability of faculty to deliver quality, college-level education coursework to the students of the Department of Public Administration at the National University of Mongolia. The experiences are related in terms of the initial shock to the educational process created by the COVID-19 pandemic and how the department enhanced its organizational resilience in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 disturbance. The authors provide a summary of the responses made as well as lessons learned. The lessons learned may be used by other organizations of higher learning to navigate stressful conditions while building resiliency and adaptive capacity.

This paper investigates how a crisis event resulted in the long-term decline in media-tech firm performance. The research used an innovative approach that developed an intellectual bridge and transfer of knowledge between the previously discrete fields of Strategic Management and Epigenetics. The study used a multi-method approach consisting of the critical incident technique, longitudinal content analysis of corporate annual reports and financial analysis which divided the data into ‘what happened before the crisis event’ and ‘what happen after the crisis event’. The paper concludes that by examining chronic corporate underperformance through the lens of epigenetics, we are better able to understand how a crisis event can create transgenerational responses which result in adaptive cultural norms that combine to consolidate an organisations underperformance.

In rural Ethiopia, where people often share their homes with their livestock, infections of humans and animals with Cryptosporidium and Giardia are relatively common. One possible transmission route is consumption of contaminated fresh produce, this study investigated the occurrence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in fresh produce in four districts of rural Tigray in Ethiopia. Fresh produce samples (n = 55) were analysed using standard laboratory procedures. Overall, 15% (8/55) of samples were found to be contaminated. Although contamination levels were mostly low, a few samples had high numbers of Giardia cysts (up to around 70 cysts per 30 g sample). Molecular analyses were largely unsuccessful, but Giardia Assemblage A was identified in one sample. Contamination with these parasites was identified in two of the four districts, but, although a similar pattern has already been described for water contamination, this may be at least partially explained by sampling bias. Nevertheless, we speculate that access to clean water sources may be an important factor for reducing the occurrence of these pathogens. Given the public health and veterinary burden associated with both parasites, the factors which are of importance for their circulation in the communities and environments deserve further investigation.

Purpose Effective use of human resources is important for the profitability and governance of family firms. In a study of the human resource management (HRM) practices of US Hispanic family firms, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the implications of agency and stewardship governance. Design/methodology/approach To better understand HRM practices in US Hispanic family firms, the authors present findings from 169 US firms to hypothesize the extent of HRM development in Hispanic family firms (n=70) vs non-Hispanic family firms (n=99). Findings Results indicated that HRM practices in Hispanic family firms are less structured than those of non-Hispanic family firms; however, when Hispanic family firms effectively use HRM practices, they will have greater financial success. Originality/value Therefore, the results suggest that Hispanic family firm leaders display relatively low agency governance and high stewardship governance.

The aim of this paper is to assess opportunities for the upcycling of waste clothing through design workshops held in Accra, Ghana. An upcycling approach to clothing longevity examines how garments can be re-designed and resold in a new form. Significant amounts of surplus and second-hand clothing from the developed world and large producer nations, for example China, are distributed to Africa and sold in local markets at affordable prices. The research was conducted into upcycling waste clothing from the market by five groups of fashion design students at Accra Technical University (ATU). A participatory research design was applied to the project and the initial briefing to design groups confirmed the concept of upcycling and the design parameters. Each group defined a design theme, made a selection of clothes and accessories in the Accra market and returned to the university to conceptualise and re-create clothes and accessories. The project culminated in presentations of finished garments modelled by the students. It addressed the disposal stage of the circular economy model of clothing sustainability by providing new knowledge of how waste clothing, readily available in a developing country’s market can be sourced and creatively re-designed into new garments and accessories.

Background: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a distressing side effect according to patients. CINV can negatively affect nutritional habits, ability to work and motivation to follow treatment regimens. Assessment of CINV is an essential component of care for patients receiving chemotherapy. Multiple factors influence the incidence of CINV with the chemotherapy regimen, both type and dosage, being the primary risk factor. It is generally assumed that the strongest patient-related factors are younger age and female sex. However, reports in the literature have demonstrated that using these factors clinicians underestimate the prevalence of CINV, especially delayed nausea. Thus, there is a need for risk assessment tools to accurately identify patients requiring anti-emetic regimens to improve quality of life of patients and their families. Most chemotherapeutic agents cause bursts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting in cellular damage and release of substances that can activate receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone. Glutathione (GSH), a key antioxidant, is responsible for maintaining redox homeostasis by neutralizing ROS elicited from chemotherapy. Therefore, we hypothesized that a patient's risk of CINV may reflect individual variations in the efficiency to scavenge free radicals after chemotherapy. Methods: In our Institutional Review Board approved study, we have enrolled over 300 patients and completed assessment of 133 patients. These patients were treated with highly or moderately emetogenic chemotherapies for lung, colon, or breast cancer. Blood samples were drawn from chemotherapy naïve patients and used to determine the glutathione recycling capacity. The assay detects the conversion of a bioactive probe, hydroxyethyl disulfide, into mercaptoethanol, which once normalized to red blood cell count, indicates glutathione recycling capacity (ChemoTox). Nausea severity was reported using the Rotterdam Symptom Check-List at each treatment cycle. Self-reported symptoms were compared to notes in medical records and anti-emetic prescription history. Results: We previously published the correlation between low ChemoTox and risk of delayed nausea for patients receiving platinum-based therapy for lung and colon cancer (N=64; correctly classified 88.5%; AUC 0.77). In this second evaluation, using SAS/STAT v.14.1 classification trees, we show the results from testing this prediction tool for breast cancer patients that typically are treated with anthracycline- or taxane-based chemotherapies. An early evaluation of anthracycline-based therapies (N=37) demonstrated a weak association between experienced nausea and ChemoTox (correctly classified 69.2%; AUC 0.64). In contrast, patients treated with taxane-based therapies (N=32) demonstrated a similar correlation between ChemoTox and severity of nausea as previously seen for platinum therapies. Also, a similar accuracy in identifying patients at risk of moderate-severe nausea was identified (correctly classified 77.3%; AUC 0.79). Conclusion: The results from our prospective study suggests that a reduced ability to recycle GSH in the blood may offer an objective prediction of delayed nausea, possibly allowing for optimal anti-emetic regimen to improve the quality-of-life for breast cancer patients. Agricultural innovation platforms are increasingly being used as a means of mitigating agricultural value chain challenges through enabling the co-evolution of different elements in the innovation process. Given a number of actors and their different interests, governance dynamics and institutions are likely to play a fundamental role in the attainment of this objective. This study employed network governance theory to establish the influence of structures and relations in innovation platforms influence on actors’ innovation behavior. Using a sample of 319 randomly selected farmers and key informant interviews, it was established that the direct effect of embeddedness on innovation behavior was positive but insignificant (β=0.005, p= 0.953). The effect embeddedness on adaptation, coordination and safeguard of exchanges was positive and significant at (β=0.339, p0.01), (β=0.239, p0.01) and (β=0.262, p0.01) respectively. The role of adaptation in influencing innovation behavior was positive and significant with (β=0.264, p0.05). The study also finds that the indirect role of adaptation and safeguard of exchanges enhances the relationship between embeddedness and actor innovation behavior. The study recommends that to increase agricultural innovations, members of the networks should have adaptive measures through continuous search for new processes, new markets, reliable inputs and take advantage of new opportunities in their operating environment so as to be adaptive to this new work arrangement.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a vast research agenda focusing on how citizens acquire knowledge about the virus and the health expert guidelines to protect themselves and their close ones against it. While many countries and regions have been accounted for, there still remains a substantial gap with respect to public opinion about the virus in Latin America, most notably in Brazil, which currently has the second highest in number of fatalities in the world. In this article, we employ a national survey of Brazilians (n = 2,771) to measure and explain knowledge and misinformation about the coronavirus and its illness, COVID-19. Our focus concerns the role of political preferences in a context of high elite polarization with a sitting government that has systematically downplayed the risks associated with the coronavirus and its illness. Our findings are clear: political preferences play a substantial role in explaining differences in knowledge about the coronavirus and COVID-19, more than conventional determinants of learning like motivation, ability, and opportunities. Specifically, we find that supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro—an avid science and COVID-19 denier—know significantly less about the coronavirus and its illness and are more likely to believe in a conspiracy theory that claims that the coronavirus was purposefully created in a Chinese laboratory to promote China's economic power, when compared to Brazilians who are less supportive of him and his government. Our findings carry important implications for how Brazilians take informational cues from political elites in that—even in a major event like a global pandemic—supporters of the president are as likely as ever to “follow their leader” and deny expert-backed scientific evidence.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been closely tied with what has been called an infodemic, a "second disease" that occurs when massive information volumes (particularly with a high prevalence of false information) hinder the public health response. In this context, social listening, the process of monitoring and analyzing conversations to inform strategic activities both online and offline, becomes an even more essential component of risk communication and engagement strategies. In the Eastern and Southern Africa region, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and partners in the response have activated their capacity to gather insights on the information needs of the populations served to better inform and engage with local communities. We describe the social listening approach taken at the Eastern and Southern Africa regional level to respond to COVID-19 and highlight efforts by the Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, and Zambia UNICEF country offices to implement digital and nondigital social listening to inform risk communication and community engagement. The analysis highlights channels leveraged, types of data monitored, and provides examples of social listening data use, as well as early challenges and lessons learned.

Broilers at slaughterhouses are prone to heat stress. They should be checked for panting, which occurs above an ambient temperature of 17°C. Fan cooling, water misting, cooling by evaporation on module roofs, cascading water down the lattice of drawers, and cold drinks all help to reduce heat stress. Drawer opening by 4–6 cm and stocking reduction also facilitate heat escape. Removing live or dead supine, or trapped prone broilers, with broken legs or wings, wedged toes or with rubbed upper wing joints, improves the welfare of the remaining broilers. Indications of stressed broilers, for example, pale soft exudative and dark, firm, dry pectoral muscles, should be sought in untreated dead on arrival birds and in postmortem rejects.

A constant theme in strategic media management literature is the transformational impact that digital media technologies and deregulation have had on shaping media firms’ corporate strategies. Whilst the role of corporate strategy is to encapsulate a firm’s long-term direction and scope of activities, it will also give a strong indication of how the firm will compete and be positioned in an industry. However, the transformative effects of a highly technological media environment have changed our traditional view of how the media industry is defined, and so developing a strategic recipe for competing in an ill-defined industry becomes more challenging. This paper examines a single media firm’s corporate strategy and perimeter and considers this in the context of a changing media industry. The paper takes a practice-led approach by undertaking a longitudinal analysis of a firm’s acquisition and divestment activities in order to understand its corporate perimeter and by implication the industry or industries where it competes. We argue that by exploring a media firm’s corporate strategy and perimeter over time, scholars will not only be able to better understand the dynamics of media practice and strategy, but also gain an insight into the changing nature of the media industry. The paper concludes that Porter’s (1980) seminal work on industry structure, profitability and attractiveness remains a relevant form of strategic analysis that can help media management researchers to conceptualize and understand the evolution of media firm corporate perimeter and the industries in which they compete.

Background The phosphoinositide 3 kinase (PI3K) pathway is important in the oncogenic function of HER2. Aberrent activation of PI3K is implicated in resistance to trastuzumab and other HER2-targeted therapies and is frequent, with up to 22% of HER2 positive breast cancer having a PIK3CA mutation. Copanlisib is a pan-class 1 PI3K inhibitor that shows particular activity against PI3Kα, the isoform encoded by the PIK3CA gene. Copanlisib has been shown to re-sensitise trastuzumab resistant cell lines to trastuzumab with synergism seen in some cell lines between copanlisib and HER2 targeted therapy. Trial design The study is a phase Ib/II open label, single arm adaptive, multi-centre trial of copanlisib in combination with trastuzumab. Eligible patients are treated with a dose escalation schedule of copanlisib IV on Days 1, 8 and 15 of a 28 day cycle with trastuzumab 2 mg/kg weekly (loading dose of 4 mg/kg in cycle 1). The phase II dose will be based on the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) established in Phase Ib. Patients are treated until radiologic or symptomatic progression, unacceptable toxicity, consent withdrawal or physician's decision. Eligibility criteria Eligible patients must have recurrent incurable or metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer that has progressed on at least one prior line of trastuzumab or T-DM1-based treatment regimen in this setting. Patients with treated and controlled brain metastases are eligible. Participants must have adequate organ function and ECOG PS ≤ 2. Patients recruited for the Phase II part of the study must have a PIK3CA mutation. Patients with uncontrolled arterial hypertension, uncontrolled diabetes or recent clinically serious infections are excluded. Specific aims The primary end point for the phase Ib part of this study is to determine the MTD for the combination. For the phase II study is anti-tumour efficacy, measured by Clinical Benefit Rate (CBR). Secondary end points are evaluation of safety and tolerability, progression-free survival, time to treatment failure, duration of response and overall survival. Incorporated translational endpoints include examination of molecular tumor adaptation in tissue and blood. Given the role of PI3K in cellular glucose metabolism, an additional exploratory objective is to determine if quantitive reduction in metabolic signal on Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) is predictive of benefit from therapy. Statistical methods To establish the MTD, we use a modified 3+3 design where 3 additional patients will be accrued even if the first 3 patients accrued experience no dose limiting toxicities (DLT) in sequential cohorts for a planned 12 patients. To determine the CBR, a one sample exact binomial test with a one sided significance level of 5%, 19 evaluable patients will provide >80% power to detect a difference between the null hypothesis proportion of 30% for CBR versus the alternative hypothesis proportion of 65%. Maturation-related differences in adaptations to resistance training in young male swimmers. J Strength Cond Res 32(1): 139-149, 2018-This study examined the effects of resistance training on muscular strength and jump performances in young male swimmers. It was hypothesized that adaptations would be of a lower magnitude in less mature (prepeak height velocity [PHV]) than in more mature (post-PHV) subjects. Fourteen pre-PHV (-1.8 ± 1.0 years) and 8 post-PHV (1.6 ± 0.5 years) swimmers undertook a 30 minutes, twice-weekly resistance training program for 8 weeks. They were compared with matched control groups (pre-PHV: -2.0 ± 1.1, n = 15; post-PHV: 1.2 ± 1.0, n = 7). The effects on lower-body isometric strength (LBS), measured with midthigh pull, and vertical jump (VJ) height in the post-PHV group were large (effect size: 1.3 [0.4 to 2.2]) and small (0.4 [-0.4 to 1.2]), respectively. Effects on LBS and VJ height in the pre-PHV group were moderate (0.8 [0.1 to 1.4]) and trivial (0.2 [-0.5 to 0.8]), respectively. Estimates in the post-PHV control group (LBS: 0.7 [-0.2 to 1.6]; VJ: 0.2 [-0.7 to 1.0]) and the pre-PHV control group (LBS: 0.1 [-0.5 to 0.7]; VJ: -0.3 [-0.9 to 0.3]) may indicate the extent to which maturation could contribute to the performance changes seen in the respective training groups. Lower-body isometric strength and VJ are trainable, but to different magnitudes, in pre- and post-PHV swimmers. After appropriate foundational training to establish technical competency, twice-weekly resistance training sessions of 30 minutes duration, comprising 3 sets of 4 exercises can be effective in pre- and post-PHV youth.

Background: Breast cancer is traditionally not considered as a highly immunogenic disease. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive form of breast cancer with reported high genomic instability and high mutation rate, indicating the possible presence of neoantigens. Cryoablation, the destruction of cells by ultra-low temperatures, can release these neoantigens and induce a tumor specific immune response. We hypothesized these neoantigens might be sufficient to trigger a robust immune response to prevent and/or reduce spread and relapse of TNBC. In this pilot study we cryoablated orthotopical 4T1 tumors in immune competent Balb/c mice and compared the results to surgery to evaluate 1) possible induction of immune responses and 2) effects on metastases formation. Methods: We used 4T1 mammary carcinoma cells to initiate tumor growth in the mammary fatpad. Tumors were treated by cryoablation, cryoablation followed by surgery (cryo-surgery), or surgery alone. Tumor growth was followed and allowed to reach 3-4mm in largest dimension. Animals were euthanized 7 days post-treatment and tissues were collected to assess cytokine levels and presence of dissociated 4T1 cells. Single-cell suspensions of tumor, tumor-draining lymph node [TDLN], and spleen were tested for secretion of mouse Th1/Th2 cytokines using a bead array and measured by flow cytometery. Possible metastatic spread was assessed by a clonogenic assay using cells from venous blood, lung, and brain. Cell suspensions were seeded in growth medium supplemented with the selection agent 6-thioguanine, allowing only resistant 4T1 cells to form colonies. Results: Cryoablation transformed tumors into a gelatinous mass surrounded by a fibrotic capsule, as typically seen in the clinic. Frozen sections of tumors revealed a necrotic core and infiltrating lymphocytes in the microenvironment. These animals displayed robust increases of Th1 and Th2 cytokines in both spleen and TDLN compared to animals with cryo-surgery treatment. TDLN of animals with surgically excised tumors secreted only IL-2. Circulating tumor cells were found in animals prior to treatment, while no 4T1 colonies formed from cell suspensions of lung and brain tissue [N=8]. At end-point, the surgery alone group had more 4T1 foci formed from lung and brain [mean foci /animal = 6.25 and 0.75, respectively; N=6] than the other two groups. Two animals in this group progressed and were euthanized early due to numerous lung metastases. The cryoablated group had the lowest number of foci formed in the lung and brain [2.25 and 0 respectively; N=8], and all animals were healthy at the predetermined end-point. Mean foci formation in the cryo-surgery group [N=7] was in-between the two other groups and one animal was euthanized early due to metastatic burden 5 days after surgery. Conclusion: Cryoablation of TNBC can induce stimulatory immune responses in vivo. These immune responses might explain why animals treated with cryoablation, though having circulating tumor cells at the time of treatment, exhibited fewer micro metastatic growths compared to surgery alone and the cryo-surgery combination. Background Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is now one of the most common serious genetic condition in England. There is no reliable estimate of the total number of people living with SCD in the UK, to support commissioners and providers of services for people with SCD. Aim To obtain reliable data on the total number of people living with SCD in the UK in 2016. Method Information was requested from all national databases known to hold information on the number of people living with SCD in the UK. The information from each data source was first reviewed to estimate likely inaccuracies and then combined to provide a best estimate of people living with SCD in the UK. Conclusion This process indicated there are are about 14000 people living with SCD in the UK. This is equivalent to 1 in 4600 people.

Innovation platforms are increasingly being used as a means of operationalizing innovation systems thinking. Agricultural innovation platforms are intended to bring together a number of stakeholders to promote an identified agricultural innovation. This is done through exchange of knowledge and other valuable resources to solve common problems. However, given the relatively new nature of innovation platforms, there is still limited conceptual knowledge on the mechanism within the platforms that leads to the implementation of innovations by different stakeholders who often have conflicting interests. This conceptual paper intended to review and unearth the intermediate processes that influence the actor innovation behavior by using the network governance theory. The review shows that the generation and implementation of ideas in an innovation platform is a process that involves structural, relational and social mechanisms. This review provides a foundation for future empirical studies in innovation platforms and particularly how they influence actor innovation behavior. The expansion of cities and agricultural plantations have unpredictable impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Yet some species are capable of tolerating anthropogenic impacts and continue to provide ecological services in highly disturbed landscapes. The objective of this study was to use DNA barcoding to identify digested plant materials and seeds in the faeces of frugivorous bats (Cynopterus brachyotis) and investigate whether (1) C. brachyotis in urban and agricultural areas exploit cultivated and exotic plants as a novel food resource and as a consequence, potentially facilitate the invasion of cultivated and exotic plants, or whether (2) C. brachyotis exploit native plants and as a consequence, potentially promote forest regeneration. A native species, Ficus fistulosa, was the most frequently detected plant and the seeds were found in bat faeces from all sampling sites suggesting the potential of fruit bats in dispersing seeds. However, we also detected several exotic plants in the faeces of C. brachyotis which suggests that the fruit bats exploit novel food resources at all sites. We recorded a diverse diet of C. brachyotis at an oil palm plantation which indicated that the fruit bats are not predominantly feeding on oil palm fruits. By using DNA barcoding, we detected plants that have not been reported in previous studies of the diet of C. brachyotis, although we could not identify which part of the plant was being consumed by the fruit bats. Given the varied diet of C. brachyotis, the potential of this bat to adapt to changing landscapes is high and they are likely dispersing seeds of native pioneer plants (Ficus).

Purpose CEO turnover and chronic corporate underperformance are examined through the lens of Transgenerational Response. Design/methodology/approach The criteria for investigating Transgenerational Response in corporations consisted of identifying a Critical Corporate Incident, the number of corporate generations and the resultant corporate financial performance. Findings The evidence presented in the case studies illustrates how a Critical Corporate Incident has produced the consequential effect of chronic financial performance in the years following the incident. Research limitations/implications These case studies have not presented the “actual” adaptive responses, inherited attitudes and behaviours that have subsequently embedded themselves in a new corporate culture, post the Critical Corporate Incident, to the detriment of the long-term health and performance of each firm. Practical implications Examining CEO turnover and chronic corporate underperformance through the lens of Transgenerational Response means that business leaders can identify how a historic event has affected the performance of their firm in subsequent generations. With this knowledge in hand, they will be able to examine the inherited attitudes and behaviours, organizational policies, strategy and adaptive cultural routines that have combined to consolidate the firms chronic under performance. Originality/value This is a highly original, evidence based, idea that has the potential to reshape our current understanding of CEO turnover and underperforming firms. It will help business leaders identify how a historic event has affected the performance of a firm in subsequent generations.

Background Longer chemotherapy (CT) duration is associated with a significant improvement in progression-free survival (PFS) and a moderate, but significant improvement in overall survival (OS) in MBC patients (pts). Prolonged CT administration, however, must be weighed against the side effects of continuous CT delivery. The SNAP trial was designed to improve the tolerability of prolonged CT by studying alternative treatment schedules. Methods The SNAP trial enrolled 258 women from April 2013 to Aug 2015. Eligibility criteria included HER2- MBC, no prior CT for advanced disease, measurable and/or non-measurable disease. All eligible pts were randomized to one of three arms. Pts received the same induction chemotherapy consisting of 3 cycles of nab-Paclitaxel given days 1,8,15 Q28, followed by one of the three maintenance therapy schedules. Originally, the dose of the induction chemotherapy was 150 mg/m2, but this was reduced to 125 mg/m2 following the first safety review of 48 treated pts. The three schedules of nab-Paclitaxel used as maintenance therapy were (Arm A) nab-Paclitaxel 150 mg/m2 d 1,15 Q28; (Arm B) nab-Paclitaxel 100 mg/m2 d 1,8,15 Q28; (Arm C) nab-Paclitaxel 75 mg/m2 d 1,8,15,22 Q28. The primary objective is to evaluate the efficacy of three nab-Paclitaxel regimens as measured by progression-free survival (PFS), using the historical reference of PFS (based on AVADO study) of docetaxel for first-line treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Each of the three regimens is compared to the historic 7-month median PFS to determine whether any of the three regimens are worthy of further investigation. Secondary endpoints include tolerability, feasibility, response rate, OS and QoL. Results Two-hundred-fifty-eight pts have been randomised and 255 are available for primary endpoint evaluation. At 18.2 months' median follow-up, 182 PFS events and 85 deaths have been observed. Median PFS was 7.9 months (90%CI 6.8-8.4) in Arm A, 9.0 months (90%CI 8.1-10.9) in Arm B and 8.5 (90%CI 6.7-9.5) in Arm C. PFS in Arm B was significantly longer than the historic PFS of first-line docetaxel (one-sided log-rank p=0.03). As expected, neurotoxicity was the most frequent adverse event. In the induction phase, grade≥2 sensory neuropathy was reported in 14.8% of pts at the starting dose of 150 mg/m2 and 7.5% at the starting dose of 125 mg/m2; grade≥3 sensory neuropathy occurred in 2.5% and 0% of the pts, respectively. In the maintenance phase, grade≥2 sensory neuropathy was reported in 37.9% of pts in Arm A, 36.1% in Arm B and 31.2% in Arm C; grade≥3 sensory neuropathy occurred in 9.1%, 5.6% and 6.6% of the pts, respectively. 199 pts started the maintenance phase. The median number of maintenance cycles was 3, 4, and 5, respectively. Stopping maintenance for reasons other than objective progression occurred in 41%, 58%, and 53%, respectively. Conclusion The SNAP trial indicates that alternative maintenance chemotherapy schedules with reduced doses after a short term induction phase at conventional doses are feasible and significantly more active than the historical PFS of docetaxel in the first line treatment of advanced breast cancer. We report here the temperature-dependent incorporation kinetics of dimeric arsenic in InAs(001) homoepitaxy, using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Surface reconstructions, in combination with the RHEED investigation have provided insight into the growth of InAs(001), developing an accurate method of controlling the V:III ratio, which has been utilised to probe the low temperature epitaxial growth of indium arsenide epitaxial layers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a strategic commentary on the interconnected areas of corporate strategy and employee performance by illustrating how two organizations adapted and transformed their businesses to the demands of digitalization and new media. Design/methodology/approach A longitudinal analysis (1995-2015) of employee productivity was calculated as operating income per employee for each firm and benchmarked against industry data. Findings Both firm’s corporate objectives and strategies were focused on ambitious levels of growth and the opportunities provided by an increasingly digital environment. However, the firms had transformed their businesses in different ways with distinct employee productivity performance outcomes. Practical implications This paper provides case studies of strategic transformation and argues that HR management strategies and practices need to be continually evaluated to assess their employee productivity in an uncertain digital operating environment. Originality/value This paper provides a longitudinal analysis of how media firms, Sky Plc and Pearson Plc, adapted, reconfigured and transformed their businesses to meet the demands of an operating environment characterized by inexorable changes in digital technologies. It presents data and conclusions on how the management of “human resources” had delivered different employee productivity outcomes over the long term.

There are attempts in African universities to strengthen their engagement with communities through student-centered outreach (S-C-O). Although the concept of social learning has been introduced in S-C-O, there is still limited theoretical understanding of how the mechanism of social learning in the S-C-O model works due to inadequate availability of indicators for empirical assessment of social learning in S-C-O programmes. This review paper explores possible indicators for measuring social learning in S-C-O. A desk review was conducted to obtain literature about the key concepts of the university outreach and social learning. A thematic-content analysis was employed to obtain indicators for measuring social learning. Our review has revealed that communities of practice theory (CPT) of social learning provides a conceptual framework for analysis of social learning in S-C-O. The key tenets of CPT include practice, community, identity and meaning. This implies that social learning occurs through collaborative learning processes as a result of social participation. Thus, efforts to investigate social learning in the S-C-O model should focus on farmers in order to assess their interactions in the prevailing social setting and/or institutional context.

There are three distinct time periods in which the social and political environments influenced incentives to hide or not hide infants, children, and young adults: the pre-PRC period before 1949, the Maoist era (1949–1976), and the reform era, after 1979. Rural families and local officials avoided census counts and registration for males and females from the late Qing Empire in the 1800s right up through modern times. After 1979 came the most critical outcome of the state birth control policy: the country’s abnormally high sex ratio at birth statistic. According to an assessment of the 2010 population census, the number of girls truly missing from the population between 1980 and 2010 was estimated to be about 20 million. However, an examination of the two key assumptions behind these skewed statistics shows the number of hidden girls to be closer to 10 million, or about half of the estimated number of “missing girls.”

Over the past decade, the frequency of cyber attacks against power grids has steadily increased, requiring researchers to find and patch vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. Our research introduces the prototype of a man-in-the-middle attack to be implemented on a microgrid emulator of a smart grid. We present a method of violating the integrity and authentication of packets that are using the IEEE Synchrophasor Protocol in a controlled environment, but this same approach could be used on any other protocol that lacks the proper overhead to ensure the integrity and authenticity of packets. In future research, we plan to implement and test the attack on the previously mentioned smart grid testbed in order to assess the attacks feasibility and tangible effects on Wide Area Monitoring and Control applications, as well as propose possible countermeasures. For this paper, we developed a working simulation of our intended attack using the software ModelSim 10.4. The attack will modify network packet data coming from a Schweitzer Engineering Labs (SEL) Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) hardware sensor, which provides a stream of precise timing values associated with current and voltage values, as these measured values are en route to the Open Phasor Data Concentrator (OpenPDC) application running on a Windows server. Our simulation provides and validates all of the necessary code in order to program a Field Programmable Gate Array and execute our attack on the testbed in future research.

Thirst in broilers was satisfied by water provision while awaiting slaughter at a one-day-per-week poultry abattoir in England. Two consignments, of 7000 broilers in total, during high summer and in April were compared. The ambient temperature by the end of slaughter was over 29°C at 16.00 hours in summer, whereas in spring the peak was 14°C. Broilers were given water from a bubbling hose or water dish, the walls of the module drawer were dripped with water, and an industrial electric cooling fan was used during hot conditions. Nipple-watered birds, once their fear of the plastic hose subsided, drank enthusiastically as depicted on the video. Thirst became more severe, as the period of water deprivation, heat and travel stress increased to eight hours or more, especially once the ambient temperature exceeded 17°C. Broilers responded as did thirsty horses, cattle or pigs.

Objectives To identify radiographic features that can be used to aid in the diagnosis of small intestinal obstruction in pet rabbits. Materials and methods Retrospective study comparing radiographic features of 63 cases of confirmed intestinal obstruction with 50 abdominal radiographs taken of rabbits without gastrointestinal disease. Abdominal radiographs were examined for gastric size, gastric contents, small intestinal dilatation and gas within the large intestine and caecum. Results Gastric size, gastric contents, small intestinal dilatation and gas within the large intestine and caecum were all features that differed between rabbits with small intestinal obstruction and rabbits without gastrointestinal disease. Radiographic features associated with small intestinal obstruction included severe gastric dilation, gastric contents primarily consisting of liquid and gas, small intestinal dilation and absence of large amounts of gas in the caecum and large intestine. Clinical significance Observation on gastric size, small intestinal dilatation and gas within the large intestine and caecum aid in radiological diagnosis of small intestinal obstruction in rabbits and so can guide appropriate treatment.

This discussion paper has been written to show the unique contribution and added value that Patient Organisations can give to the development and improvement of newborn screening programmes for sickle cell disorder (SCD) and other haemoglobinopathies in Europe. As an example, the action of the Sickle Cell Society (SCS) in partnership with statutory organisations in the U.K., such as the National Health Service (NHS) Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme (NHS SCT SP), will be described.

Many businesses ("") across industries hire technology service providers ( "providers" ) to develop and maintain software applications. The provider in turn hires a team, distributed across the globe and filling out reports focused on what is happening locally. This results in hundreds of reports covering the provider ’s portfolio of projects, each with dozens of fields. The task of sorting through and making decisions based on the ever-growing volume of data inevitably falls on the shoulders of a project manager.

As women in family firms experience challenges in leadership, we explore how sources of assistance and networking have been valuable to their success. Using a case study approach, we interviewed respondents from 18 US family firms in diverse industries. Respondents explained the importance of receiving assistance and guidance from both internal and external sources. We identified important types of needed information and external assistance sources. We generated four propositions from our study and noted the positive effect of close family ties and the negative effects of gender bias and family conflict.

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to examine why social entrepreneurs in the USA choose to operate an entirely fair trade business and the factors that affect fair trade social entrepreneurship. Fair trade seeks to benefit producers in developing countries by providing a market for their goods in developed countries. Fair trade enables all parties in the supply chain to make living wages and/or a profit.Design/methodology/approach– Using a qualitative multiple case study approach of social entrepreneurs in 35 US fair trade companies, the authors develop a model and nine propositions to explain the findings.Findings– The authors identify three primary motivational factors (ethical belief, religious faith, and business values), four contributory factors that strengthen fair trade engagement (family member involvement, the trend toward for profit status, industry professionalism, and consumer education), and three negative factors that work to discourage involvement (loss of identity, lack of industry consensus, and the shortage of retailers). The authors conclude by using the findings to consider the future of US fair trade social entrepreneurship.Research limitations/implications– The authors recognize limitations due to the sample size.Practical implications– The authors believe that fair trade is worthy of further study and increased awareness.Social implications– Increased awareness of fair trade may lead to better consumer buying decisions.Originality/value– The authors contribute to the development of theory in the study of fair trade, which has rarely been studied in the context of US social entrepreneurs.
