Search

Occupational stress has increased in higher education academic staff over several decades, and this has been particularly acute in Australia and New Zealand. This scoping review sought to understand the causes and impacts of occupational stress among Australian and New Zealand academics. Eight EBSCO databases were searched for key terms: academic and occupational stress and Australia and New Zealand. Twenty relevant papers were sourced, from which five common themes were extracted: (i) balancing an academic workload, (ii) casualisation of the workforce, (iii) the managerialism phenomenon, (iv) transition from field of practice to academia, and (v) academic and other staff. Further research in the Australian and New Zealand context is required to identify the nature of specific stressors and how these impact health and well-being.

Aim: Pharmaceutical healthcare is a process comprising knowledge-intensive tasks. Therefore the tools used in the management of knowledge are gaining more attention. This paper aims to investigate knowledge management systems, their implementation, tools used for decision making. Method: We have used three databases to research the knowledge management system in the pharmaceutical healthcare sector. PubMed, Google Scholar and journal websites were used for the search of the required key terms. Result: After analyzing the data, it was found that the effective utilization of knowledge management systems in the pharmaceutical health care sector has increased the quality of care. There are many opportunities; some create new advances in health care, and some even create barriers. All these help in clinical decision support. Conclusion: Right decision at the right time is made by evidence-based decisions in the healthcare sector. A knowledge management system is paramount in the pharmaceutical healthcare sector. Implementation of appropriate tools will significantly enhance the quality of care.

Pediatric intestinal failure (PIF) is a relatively rare disease entity that requires focused interdisciplinary care and specialized nutrition management. There has long been a lack of consensus in the definition of key terms related to PIF because of its rarity and a plethora of small studies rather than large trials. As such, the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) PIF Section, composed of clinicians from a variety of disciplines caring for children with intestinal failure, is uniquely poised to provide insight into this definition void. This document is the product of an effort by the Section to create evidence-based consensus definitions, with the goal of allowing for appropriate comparisons between clinical studies and measurement of long-term patient outcomes. This paper has been approved by the ASPEN Board of Directors.

This review focuses on the efficacy of herbal medicines for managing dyspepsia in humans and animals. Searches were conducted on the PubMed, Science Direct, and Medline databases, for publications in the last 3 years. In each database, the search terms used consisted of the 2 key terms describing the disorder and subtypes plus each of the terms relating to the therapy. The key terms used were “natural product” and “medicinal plant” in a cross-over with “dyspepsia” and “functional dyspepsia” (i.e., gastroprotection, Helicobacter pylori infection, prokinetic). We included all human and animal studies on the effects of herbal medicines reporting the key outcome of dyspepsia symptoms. Preclinical studies using critically validated models showed that most medicinal plants with gastroprotective action had antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and antisecretory effects. Moreover, several species displayed anti Helicobacter pylori and prokinetic efficacy. The data availability of controlled clinical studies is currently minimal. The use of different methodologies and the minimal number of patients raise doubts about the effects of these preparations. Only adequate clinical trials with scientifically validated methods can determine whether different herbal medicines can be used as viable alternatives to the conventional pharmacological treatments used to control dyspepsia symptoms.

We looked at existing recommendations and supporting evidence on the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in infancy for reducing vitamin D deficiency and for preventing rickets and infections. We also looked at optimal dose of vitamin D and the age until which vitamin D supplementation is beneficial.We conducted a literature search up to the 17th of July 2019 by using key terms and manual search in selected sources. We summarized the recommendations and the strength of the recommendation when and as reported by the authors. We summarized the main findings of systematic reviews with the certainty of the evidence as reported.A daily dose of 400 international units of vitamin D in infants has shown to be effective for improving bone health and preventing rickets. Evidence is more robust in groups of infants and children at risk. Vitamin D supplementation is well tolerated, and not associated with toxicity. Higher doses have not shown to add benefit while it could potentially cause toxic blood levels and hypercalcemia. Adequate levels of vitamin D might not be achieved with lower daily doses. Universal vitamin D supplementation starting shortly after birth, regardless of the mode of feeding and until 12 months of age, is strongly recommended. Beyond 12 months of age vitamin D supplementation is recommended only in groups of children at risk.

Although cancer survival rates are improving, pediatric patients with cancer still face numerous stressors. Using an integrative approach, a literature review was conducted to identify stressors and synthesize effective coping strategies among pediatric patients with cancer. The CINAHL® Complete, ProQuest, and PubMed® databases were searched for relevant studies using key terms. Eight studies were included in the final analysis. Three factors contributing to everyday stressors of pediatric patients with cancer and four major coping categories were identified.

Background: Shin splint is one of the most common sports injuries after strenuous exercise. Kinesiology taping (KT) is a popular noninvasive remedy used in sports-related disorders, with the potential effects of relieving pain, facilitating proprioception, modulating muscle activation and correcting abnormal movement patterns. However, the exact efficacy of KT on shin splints is still unknown, and previous findings are inconsistent. Hence, this study aimed to conduct a systematic review to evaluate the current status of relevant evidence on its efficacy. Methods: The review was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines, and a systematic search of the literature was conducted in December 2020. Electronic databases, Embase, Scopus, Medline, Web of Science, PubMed and Biomed Central were searched for the identification of pertinent studies with pre-defined key terms on shin splints and KT. Results: Four studies with a total sample size of 141 participants were included and analyzed. Two studies had within-subject designs, whereas the other two were randomized clinical trials. Although the positive results of KT were reported by the studies, methodological quality varied from poor to moderate according to the Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale or Non-Randomized Studies-of Interventions. Conclusion: In conclusion, this review revealed that the efficacy of KT on shin splints remains not clear. Evidence that supports its effectiveness in individuals with shin splints is currently limited. Further studies with good methodological quality and study design are warranted.

A panel of imaging experts was assembled to review neovascular age-related macular degeneration optical coherence tomography angiography descriptors published to date, and test agreement on use of these terms, which was found to be low. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has been used to identify and characterize macular neovascularization (MNV) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 Many studies have explored OCTA morphological features of MNV that might serve as biomarkers to assess disease activity and response to treatment. 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 The proliferation of studies however has resulted in an OCTA terminology that has been variable and inconsistent. To address inconsistency of nomenclature and allow harmonization, a multidisciplinary panel of retinal imaging experts with a history of relevant research contributions to the field was assembled with the purpose of reviewing published terminology and to recommend a reduced list of key terms pertinent to OCTA. The group was called UNICORN, because of its ultimate goal of generating a UNIfied COmmentary of the committee of inteRnational experts on the nomenclature for Neovascular AMD in OCTA. In this report we describe the first steps, which included a review of OCTA descriptors of neovascular AMD (nAMD) published to date, and an exercise that tested agreement of these terms among retinal imaging experts. Prior to the first UNICORN meeting, a non-systematic review of the literature was performed, using the search terms “optical coherence tomography angiography” or “OCT angiography” or “OCT-A”, AND “neovascular macular degeneration” or “neovascular age-related macular degeneration” or “neovascular AMD” or “nAMD” or “wet age-related macular degeneration” or “wet AMD” or “wet ARMD”. A dictionary of OCTA descriptors relating to the features of MNV in AMD was generated and circulated to the panel.

The concept of ecosystem service (ES) was originally developed to illustrate the benefits that natural ecosystems generate for society and to raise awareness for biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. In recent years, geographical information system (GIS) has become a powerful tool for mapping (ES) within a landscape, which visualizes spatial and temporal patterns and changes in ecosystems and their services.Mapping (ES) is necessary for the progress of strategies that will guarantee their future supply and to support the policies in a more effective way. The comprehensive literature review were conducted from international databases such as Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, and Google Scholar. We used the key terms including ‘mapping’, ‘maps’, ‘ES or ecosystem service, ‘ecosystem functions’, ‘landscape functions’, ‘evaluation of ES’, and ‘assessment of services’. in order to identify mapping ecosystem services and their challenges and opportunities. In total, 65 research papers were found firstly, which 34 of them were selected for reviewing. The most mportant challenges are insuffieicnet generation of ES in the context of managed systems, need to estimate associations among indicators of (ES) incomplete understanding of the nature of associations among services, and the lack of a general numerical outline to address these relations.

PurposeThis research was to understand people's perceptions and trends in wearable robots and the research questions were as follows: (1) investigating key terms related to wearable robots that were frequently used by and exposed to people and (2) analyzing relationships among those key terms.Design/methodology/approachTextom, a big data collection and analysis software system, was used to collect data using the keyword – wearable robot.FindingsThe frequency-inverse document frequency, term frequency and central analyses were investigated, and the major key terms related to wearable robots and their connectivity were identified. After performing network analysis and convergence of iterated correlations analyses using UCINET and NetDraw programs, the major key term categories were identified.Originality/valueIt is important to understand how people think and perceive about wearable robots before developing wearable robots. The results of the research are expected to be helpful to better understand how people perceive and what key terms are mainly discussed by people in both countries and ultimately help when developing wearable robots with better market targeting approach methods.

Introduction: Despite advances in medical care, heart failure (HF)-associated morbidity and mortality remains high. Consequently, there is increased effort to find better ways for predicting, screening, and prognosticating HF in order to facilitate effective primary and secondary prevention.Areas covered: In this review, we describe the various biomarkers associated with different etiologic pathways implicated in HF, and discuss their roles in screening, diagnosing, prognosticating and predicting HF. We explore the emerging role of multi-omic approaches. We performed electronic searches in databases (PubMed and Google Scholar) through December 2020, using the following key terms: biomarker, novel, heart failure, risk, prediction, and estimation.Circulating BNP and troponin concentrations have been established in clinical care as key biomarkers for diagnosing and prognosticating HF. Emerging biomarkers (such as galectin-3 and ST-2) have gained further recognition for use in evaluating prognosis of HF patients. Promising biomarkers that are yet to be part of clinical recommendations include biomarkers of cardiorenal disease.Expert opinion: Increasing recognition of the complex and interdependent nature of pathophysiological pathways of HF has led to the application of multi-marker approaches including multi-omic high throughput assays. These newer approaches have the potential for new therapeutic discoveries and improving precision medicine in HF.

El estudio del aprendizaje colaborativo mediado por internet se popularizó a partir de los años 90, cuando el uso de las mediaciones tecnológicas soportadas por internet evidenció que se podría aprender colaborando con la mediación del computador. Los desarrollos posteriores revisaron cómo las tecnologías favorecían los procesos de aprendizaje y de qué manera la colaboración podía ser incorporada en la educación en la modalidad virtual. Objetivo. Establecer líneas de estudio no exploradas que pueden contribuir al desarrollo de posteriores trabajos sobre el aprendizaje colaborativo en procesos de educación superior mediado por internet. Análisis. Se analizaron 225 documentos publicados en revistas indexadas en SCOPUS entre 1995 y 2018. Con la ayuda del paquete bibliometrix en el entorno R se estimó el comportamiento de las publicaciones en la franja de tiempo señalada, las áreas del conocimiento en las que más se publica sobre el tema, los documentos más relevantes por su número de citaciones, así como los énfasis temáticos asumidos en los estudios analizados, mediante redes de coocurrencia de términos clave definidos por las autorías. Resultados . Los resultados reflejan dispersión en la investigación sobre el tema, presumiblemente por la tendencia a desarrollar estudios aislados por disciplinas, orientados en su mayoría al análisis de la efectividad de herramientas tecnológicas y de entornos para favorecer el aprendizaje, sobre los resultados individuales, más no los grupales. Conclusiones. El aprendizaje colaborativo mediado por internet requiere ser estudiado en estudios interdisciplinares, además necesita ser estructurado, diseñado y enseñado en los programas de educación superior, ya que las herramientas tecnológicas son apoyos que median en el proceso de aprendizaje colaborativo, no son el fin del proceso educativo. The study of collaborative learning mediated by the Internet became popular in the 1990s when the use of technological mediations, supported by the Internet, showed that learning could be possible by collaborating with the computer’s mediation. Later developments reviewed how technologies favored learning processes and how collaboration could be incorporated into virtual mode education. Objective. To establish unexplored study lines that can contribute to further works on collaborative learning in higher education processes mediated through the Internet. Analysis. It was conducted on 225 documents published in journals indexed in SCOPUS between 1995 and 2018. The use of the bibliometrix package in the R environment help to analyze the behavior of the publications in the indicated time frame, the areas of knowledge in which more is published about the topic, the most relevant documents due to their number of citations, and the thematic emphasis assumed in the studies analyzed; the analysis was carried out through networks of co-occurrence of key terms defined by the authors. Results. The results reflect dispersion in the research on the subject, presumably due to the tendency to develop isolated studies by disciplines, mostly oriented to analyzing the effectiveness of technological tools and environments to favor learning, on individual results but not group ones. Conclusions. Collaborative learning mediated through the Internet requires to be studied in interdisciplinary studies. It also needs to be structured, designed, and taught in higher education programs since technological tools are the support of the collaborative learning process, not the end of the educational process. O estudo da aprendizagem colaborativa mediada pela internet popularizou-se a partir dos anos 90, quando o uso de mediações tecnológicas, apoiadas pela internet, mostraram que ela poderia ser aprendida colaborando com a mediação do computador. Desenvolvimentos posteriores revisaram como as tecnologias favoreciam os processos de aprendizagem e como a colaboração poderia ser incorporada à educação no modo virtual. Objetivo. Estabelecer linhas de estudo inexploradas que possam contribuir para o desenvolvimento de trabalhos subsequentes sobre aprendizagem colaborativa em processos de ensino superior mediados pela Internet. Análise. Foram analisados 225 documentos publicados em periódicos indexados no SCOPUS entre 1995 e 2018. Com o auxílio do pacote bibliometrix no ambiente R, estimou-se o comportamento das publicações no intervalo de tempo indicado, áreas do conhecimento em que mais existem publicação sobre o tema, os documentos mais relevantes pelo número de citações, bem como pela ênfase temática assumida nos estudos analisados, por meio de redes de coincidências de termos-chave definidos pelos autores. Resultados. Os resultados refletem dispersão nas pesquisas sobre o tema, provavelmente devido à tendência de desenvolver estudos isolados por disciplinas, em sua maioria voltados para a análise da eficácia de ferramentas e ambientes tecnológicos para favorecer a aprendizagem, em resultados individuais, mas não em grupos. Conclusões. A aprendizagem colaborativa mediada pela Internet requer um estudo interdisciplinar, mas também precisa ser estruturada, desenhada e ministrada em programas de Ensino Superior, uma vez que as ferramentas tecnológicas são suportes que medeiam o processo de aprendizagem colaborativa, e não o fim do processo educacional.

The complexity of neoplasia and its treatment are a challenge to the formulation of general criteria that are applicable across solid cancers. Determining the number of prior lines of therapy (LoT) is critically important for optimising future treatment, conducting medication audits, and assessing eligibility for clinical trial enrolment. Currently, however, no accepted set of criteria or definitions exists to enumerate LoT. In this article, we seek to open a dialogue to address this challenge by proposing a systematic and comprehensive framework to determine LoT uniformly across solid malignancies. First, key terms, including LoT and ‘clinical progression of disease’ are defined. Next, we clarify which therapies should be assigned a LoT, and why. Finally, we propose reporting LoT in a novel and standardised format as LoT N (CLoT + PLoT), where CLoT is the number of systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT) administered with curative intent and/or in the early setting, PLoT is the number of SACT given with palliative intent and/or in the advanced setting, and N is the sum of CLoT and PLoT. As a next step, the cancer research community should develop and adopt standardised guidelines for enumerating LoT in a uniform manner.

Objective This article reviews the literature and evidence of the association of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw with tumor necrosis factor-α inhibition. Methods A systematic review was performed using electronic databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase) using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Key terms were used in the search. No restrictions were placed on publication status. Selection criteria comprised all levels of available evidence. Articles in the English language were selected up to and including July 2020. Reference lists of relevant studies were searched for additional articles. Articles were selected on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Findings from eligible studies were extracted by one reviewer and confirmed by a second. Disagreements were settled through discussion. Results The initial search of the key terms yielded 2107 articles. There were 1192 articles remaining after removal of duplicates and addition of 6 articles that were hand-selected from among reference lists of relevant studies. There were 12 eligible articles after screening. The full texts were read, and 5 articles were included on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Conclusions Further research is required to determine an association of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw and tumor necrosis factor-α inhibition.

The aim of this article was to synopsize platelet-rich plasma (PRP) use in musculoskeletal pathologies through evidence-based assessment of the preparation, classification, mechanism of action and applications of PRP, thereby answering which PRP type is best for each clinical indication. The literature search was performed using Medline, EMBASE and Cochrane Reviews databases for papers containing the key terms “platelet-rich plasma” AND “orthopaedics” AND (“classification” OR “mechanism of action” OR “preparation” OR “clinical application”). Generated papers were evaluated for pertinence in following areas: preparation, classification, mechanism of action, clinical application within orthopaedics. Non-English papers were excluded. Included studies were evaluated for quality. Sixty studies were included in our review. There are many commercial PRP preparation kits with differing component concentrations. There is no consensus on optimal component concentrations. Multiple PRP classifications exist but none have been validated. Platelet-rich plasma acts via growth factors (GFs) released from α-granules within platelets. Growth factors have been shown to be beneficial in healing. Grossly elevated concentrations of GFs may have inhibitory effects on healing. Multiple systematic reviews show efficacy of PRP in tendinopathies, early osteoarthritis, acute muscle injuries and in combination with rotator cuff repair and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The literature suggests leukocyte-rich PRP (L-PRP) is more beneficial in tendinopathies and pure PRP (P-PRP) is more beneficial in cartilage pathology. However, different PRP preparations have not been directly compared in any pathology. Classification of PRP type is frequently not stated in research. Standardization of PRP research parameters is needed to streamline findings and generate clear indications for PRP types to yield maximum clinical benefit. Concentrados plaquetários são compostos autógenos obtidos através da centrifugação em alta rotação do sangue venoso. Dentro dos tratamentos periodontais, eles têm sido aplicados por terem excelentes propriedades regenerativas e de neoformação óssea. Esta revisão teve por objetivo responder a seguinte pergunta foco: “Em procedimentos regenerativos ósseos periodontais, o uso da fibrina rica em plaquetas(PRF) sozinha ou combinada com biomateriais, comparada com biomateriais isoladamente, leva a alterações significativas na neoformação óssea, preenchimento de defeitos ósseos ou ganhos dimensionais?”. Uma revisão de escopo foi realizada de acordo com as normas PRISMA-ScR. As bases de dados Medline/pubMed, Scopus e Scielo foram pesquisadas usando termos-chaves e procurando ensaios clínicos aleatorizados realizados em pacientes com diferentes tipos de defeitos ósseos periodontais, que tenham ou não recebido tratamento periodontal, onde foi aplicado em um grupo PRF isoladamente ou em associação com biomaterial, quando comparado com biomateriais isoladamente. A busca eletrônica gerou 2.497 títulos/resumos e 5 artigos foram incluídos nesta revisão. No total, 175 voluntários foram tratados. Os defeitos ósseos de duas e três paredes foram os mais comumente relatados nos estudos. O tempo de acompanhamento variou entre 6 e 12 meses. Quando o PRF foi utilizado no tratamento de defeitos periodontais houve a uma melhora mais evidente nos parâmetros clínicos, incluindo uma diminuição na profundidade do defeito e diminuição da profundidade de sondagem e ganho de inserção. Os resultados desta revisão escopo indicaram que uso de PRF sozinha ou combinada com biomateriais em procedimentos regenerativos ósseos periodontais leva a uma melhora clinicamente relevante na neoformação óssea.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review with meta-analysis to investigate the outcomes of direct lingual nerve repair after injury. Materials and Methods The studies in this review were compiled by using PubMed/Medline and ScienceDirect, which were searched by a single reviewer (M.K.) from their inception until March 10, 2020. Two independent reviewers (M.K. and V.B.Z.) who were blinded to each other's assessments reviewed full-text articles to assess for study inclusion. Outcomes were dichotomized as either functional sensory recovery (FSR) or no FSR. Clinical testing must have been assessed at a minimum of 6 months postoperatively. FSR was defined as grade S3, S3+, or S4 on the British Medical Research Council scale of neurosensory function. Studies were only eligible if they provided the number of patients treated with conduits or time from injury to repair and the associated rates of FSR with each intervention. Results The initial search using the key terms yielded 4,921 results, which was then eventually filtered down to 6 articles after multiple levels of appraisal. Five articles were retrospective cohort studies and 1 was a randomized controlled study. Four of the 6 studies reported an FSR of grade S3 or higher in 85% or more of the patients. Conduit use was not associated with a significantly greater likelihood of achieving FSR (pooled risk ratio = 1.10; 95% confidence interval, 0.96 to 1.27; P = .17). Repair within 6 months was associated with significantly improved likelihood of achieving FSR (pooled risk ratio = 0.84; 95% confidence interval, 0.71 to 0.99; P = .04). Conclusions The use of conduits during repair was not associated with clinically significant increased FSR. Early repair was associated with a beneficial effect on FSR; however, heterogeneity was an issue with the studies. There is a lack of strong evidence owing to the nature of studies analyzed and the need for further research is required.

Background: Sixty years ago, Ross discussed the use of oral dapsone in the treatment of acne vulgaris. Ross was fundamental in demonstrating the importance of this medication in dermatology. Following this, topical formulations have been used for the treatment of acne vulgaris which has not responded to traditional therapies. We explore the impact that the discovery of dapsone has had on subsequent research and clinical practice and explore the typical doses and side effects of this often sidelined therapy. Methods: We conducted a review of the literature on the use of dapsone for acne using key terms “acne vulgaris,” “dapsone,” “isotretinoin,” “systemic,” “topical” searching databases such as MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PubMed. Only articles in English were chosen. The level of evidence was evaluated and selected accordingly listing the studies with the highest level of evidence first using the Oxford Centre of Evidence-Based Medicine 2011 guidance. Results: Oral dapsone and topical dapsone have been used in acne vulgaris and acne fulminans. Systemic dapsone seems to be less effective than other treatment options, and further research is required to examine the use of the topical formulation for acne vulgaris compared with alternative treatments. Conclusion: Dermatologists may wish to consider the use of this long-established medication for the treatment of acne vulgaris. With careful monitoring, oral dapsone is an important alternative therapy where isotretinoin is contraindicated or not tolerated.

Objective and methods This study examines the protection of workers from the “COVID-19” pandemic, especially healthcare workers, disinfection workers, and future prospects in occupational health. To summarize this concept, I searched the major websites using the key terms “COVID-19,” “coronavirus,” “pandemic,” “workers’ health,” and “quarantine” or “disinfection.” Results and conclusion The use of disinfectants is recognized to be effective in preventing viruses, but this is also increasing the need to solve problems, such as the side effects caused by the increase in disinfectant use. This paper presents the precautions for safer use of chemicals handled by workers during quarantine and disinfection and proposes policy suggestions. The COVID-19 pandemic will have long-lasting effects on workers. Syndromic methods for monitoring illness outside of healthcare settings can be useful adjuncts to conventional disease reporting. From these results, it is important that the precautions for chemicals’ safety handled by workers during quarantine and disinfection as well as policy suggestions for quarantine and disinfection workers are very important to protect workers.

The objective of this integrative review was to assess birth and postpartum doulas' roles in supporting breastfeeding initiation and duration. The electronic databases Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Embase, PubMed, and Scopus were searched using the key terms doula and breastfeeding. Fourteen articles met inclusion criteria. Six key themes were identified. Doulas may acquire only modest amounts of lactation-specific education; however, doula care still enhances the breastfeeding care provided by health-care professionals. Doulas offer prenatal and intrapartum support that encourages breastfeeding initiation in the hospital, as well as providing breastfeeding support in the community and home settings. This reinforces the unique role of the doula in bolstering maternal–infant health. The effect of doulas on breastfeeding duration is less clear.

Background: Hospitalised patients with diabetes experience a longer duration of inpatient stay, increased readmission rates and excess mortality compared with patients without diabetes. Objectives: To determine whether inpatient diabetes education (IDE), provided to hospitalised patients with diabetes, is an effective intervention in improving one or all of the following clinical outcomes: length of stay (LOS), readmission rate and mortality rate. Methods: A free-text search on MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, BNI and EMBASE was conducted on literature published from the date of each databases’ inception to March 2019. In addition, grey literature was used to support the search with the following key terms: ‘IDE’, ‘LOS’, ‘readmission’ and ‘mortality’, along with their possible substitutes and alternatives combined. Results: In total, eight studies met the inclusion criteria with a total number of 3,828 participants. Seven studies investigated LOS outcome for which accumulated mean LOS and median LOS were both lower (16.5% and 26.67%, respectively) in the IDE group compared with the non-IDE group. Six studies investigated readmittance rates, for which accumulated readmission rate (up to 12 months) was 15.9% lower in the IDE group than in the non-IDE group. Finally, the mortality rate was 36.6% lower in the IDE group compared with the non-IDE group, but this was non-significant and only one study reported this outcome. Conclusion: The findings of this review support the efficacy of an IDE programme in a hospital setting by reducing LOS and readmission rates in patients with diabetes. In addition, a possible trend towards a decreased mortality rate was observed. IDE is therefore recommended to improve clinical outcomes of hospitalised patients with diabetes.

This paper reviews the use of multiple trials, defined as multiple sites or multiple arms in a single evaluation and replications, in evaluating social programs. After defining key terms, the paper discusses the rationales for conducting multiple trials, which include increasing sample size to increase statistical power; identifying the most effective program design; increasing external validity; and learning how various factors affect program impact. The paper discusses reasons why program design varies across sites, including adaptations to local environment and participant characteristics and a lack of fidelity to the program design. The paper discusses why programs vary across sites and when it is desirable to maintain consistency. Distinctions are drawn between evaluations of pilots and demonstrations versus ongoing programs, as well as programs where variation is permitted or encouraged versus when a fixed design is desired. The paper includes illustrations drawn from evaluations of demonstrations and ongoing programs.

Teacher leadership significantly promotes development and efficiency at schools. However, the practice of teacher leadership is slammed with challenges that impact its progression and effective implementation in schools. Therefore, the present study focused on the key terms, problems, and obstacles of teacher leadership based on domestic and international works of literature on teacher leadership practices. The study discussed the notion of teacher leadership before it addressed the challenges in the practice. Hence, the present paper helped school leaders to establish teacher leadership tasks in schools and help researchers to carry out more studies on teacher leadership.

Background Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common spine diseases and represents the most frequent cause of absence from work in developed countries. Approximately 40% of chronic LBP is related to discogenic origin. The goal of the study is producing a review of literature to describe analytically the techniques of intradiscal injections. Methods PubMed database was searched for clinical studies with the different key terms: "intradiscal", "injection", "steroid" "procedures", "techniques", "CT", "MRI", "fluoroscopy", "fluoroscopic", "guidance", "ozone", "ultrasound", "images". Only studies written in English, French, or Italian in which the intradiscal injection represents the main procedure for the low back discopathy treatment on humans were considered. We excluded the articles that do not mention this procedure; those which indicated that the intradiscal injection had happened accidentally during other treatments; those reporting the patient's pain was determined by other causes than the discopathy (facet joint syndrome, tumor, spondylodiscitis). Results Thirty-one articles dated from 1969 to 2018 met the criteria. The examined population was 6843 subjects, 52.3% male and 47.7% female, with a mean age of 45.9±10.1 years. The techniques are highly variable in terms of procedure: different operators, needle guidance, injection sites, drugs, tilt angle of the needle). Conclusion The efficacy and the safety of the intradiscal procedures are not easily comparable due to different types of studies and their limited number. Further studies are needed to standardize the intradiscal injection technique/procedure to improve safety, repeatability and effectiveness, and last but not least to reduce peri- and postoperative care and health-care costs.

Background and objectives Many patients, providers, and potential living donors perceive the living kidney donor evaluation process to be lengthy and difficult to navigate. Design, setting, participants, & measurements We sought consensus on key terms and process and outcome indicators that can be used to measure how efficiently a transplant center evaluates persons interested in becoming a living kidney donor. Using a RAND-modified Delphi method, 77 participants (kidney transplant recipients or recipient candidates, living kidney donors or donor candidates, health care providers, and health care administrators) completed an online survey to define the terms and indicators. The definitions were then further refined during an in-person meeting with ten stakeholders. Results We identified 16 process indicators (e.g., average time to evaluate a donor candidate), eight outcome indicators (e.g., annual number of preemptive living kidney donor transplants), and two measures that can be considered both process and outcome indicators (e.g., average number of times a candidate visited the transplant center for the evaluation). Transplant centers wishing to implement this set of indicators will require 22 unique data elements, all of which are either readily available or easily collected prospectively. Conclusions We identified a set of indicators through a consensus-based approach that may be used to monitor and improve the performance of a transplant center in how efficiently it evaluates persons interested in becoming a living kidney donor.

The growth in information technology and computer capacity has opened up opportunities to deal with much and much larger data sets than even a decade ago. There has been a technological revolution of big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Perhaps many readers would immediately think about robotic surgery or self-driving cars, but there is much more to AI. This Short Communication starts with an overview of the key terms, including AI, machine learning, deep learning and Big Data. This Short Communication highlights so developments of AI in health that could benefit a low-income country like Nepal and stresses the need for Nepal’s health and education systems to track such developments and apply them locally. Moreover, Nepal needs to start growing its own AI expertise to help develop national or South Asian solutions. This would require investing in local resources such as access to computer power/capacity as well as training young Nepali to work in AI.

Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) is a highly contagious respiratory disease of small ruminants that is caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae. Sheep and goats are two of the species of small ruminants most at risk of CCPP. Outbreaks of CCPP cause significant economic and trade disturbances in several parts of the world. However, the extent and magnitude of CCPP in a particular geographical region is still not well known due to lack of comprehensive data on its occurrence. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of CCPP in sheep and goats raised in different geographical regions as well as the factors contributing to the spread of the disease. Searches were done in five online repositories: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, CAB Direct and Google Scholar using pre-selected key terms. Data were retrieved from the 41 articles that met the study's inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalences were determined using a random effect meta-analysis model. Prevalence of CCPP was 23.19% (95% CI: 11.90-34.47%) in sheep and 24.91% (95% CI: 20.99-28.84%) in goats. Overall, the regional level pooled prevalence estimates ranged from 8.0% (95% CI: 6.91-9.09%) to 28.70% (22.02-35.38%), depending on species and world region. Substantial heterogeneity (I2 > 75%) was observed in most pooled prevalence estimates. The results indicate high prevalences of CCPP in sheep and goats across the regions, particularly in Africa and Asia, and highlights the need to institute appropriate control measures. Active surveillance and research on risk factors are recommended.

The purpose of this retrospective study is to characterize the clinical signs, laboratory values, treatment modalities and mortality outcomes related to cycad palm toxicosis in dogs and to identify medical interventions that potentially correlate with mortality. Dogs with confirmed cycad palm ingestion were identified by reviewing medical records from two private veterinary referral centres for key terms and phrases indicative of cycad palm toxicosis. Of 130 dogs included, 107 (82.3%) presented with clinical signs. A total of 2 (1.5%) died and 14 (10.8%) were euthanized. Diarrhea, lethargy and mortality were all associated with an elevated initial alanine transaminase (ALT) concentration. Overall mortality was 12.3%, with a significantly higher proportion of dogs with an ALT concentration

Early reports have suggested survival benefits associated with a hernia sac in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). However, these studies have included only small subsets of patients. This systematic review aimed to evaluate differences in outcomes of CDH newborns with and without a hernia sac. PubMed and Embase databases were searched using relevant key terms. Papers were independently reviewed by two authors with final selection approved by the senior author. Original search retrieved 537 papers; the final review included 8 studies (n = 837 patients). There were 168 CDH patients (20%) with a hernia sac with an overall survival of 93% vs 73% for CDH newborns without a sac (p p p p Conclusion: This study shows significant survival benefits in newborns associated with presence of a CDH sac. This may be likely related to these infants having more favourable physiology with less severe pulmonary hypertension and/or smaller anatomical defects requiring primary closure only. What is Known:• Early reports have suggested survival benefits associated with a hernia sac in CDH.• Previous studies have included only a small number of patients. What is New:• A systematic review of published studies clearly shows that CDH newborns with a hernia sac have better overall survival outcomes and less severe pulmonary hypertension.• ECMO utilization and patch repair were also less often required in newborns with a hernia sac.

Transportation systems are central to all cities, and city planners and policy makers take special interest in assuring these systems are efficient, functional, sustainable, and, increasingly, that they have a positive impact on human health. In addition, vehicular emissions are increasingly costly to cities due to congestion and its impact on public health. This study aims to show the associations between the media and environmental variables and associated transit ridership. By tracking media influence, we illustrated how media coverage and attention to an issue over time may impact public opinion and ridership outcomes, especially at the local level where the issues are most salient. The relationship between air quality and transit ridership shown can be generally explained through a combination of infrastructure and human behavior. The media key terms examined in this analysis show that ridership is associated with favorable weather conditions and air quality, suggesting that ridership volume may be influenced by an overall sense of comfort and safety. Based on this analysis, we illustrated the role of media attention in both increased and decreased transit ridership and how such effects are compounded by air quality conditions (e.g., green, yellow, orange, and red air quality days).

Ethical reflection on Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a priority. In this article, we propose a methodological model for a comprehensive ethical analysis of some uses of AI, notably as a replacement of human actors in specific activities. We emphasize the need for conceptual clarification of relevant key terms (e.g., intelligence) in order to undertake such reflection. Against that background, we distinguish two levels of ethical analysis, one practical and one theoretical. Focusing on the state of AI at present, we suggest that regardless of the presence of intelligence, the lack of morally relevant features calls for caution when considering the role of AI in some specific human activities.

This essay provides a subtly new reading of Frantz Fanon's Peau noire, masques blancs ( Black Skin, White Masks; 1952) through a re-examination of one of its key terms: noirceur, or ‘blackness’. While noirceur slips easily into English translation as Blackness, it was never available or viable in French as a way to speak about Black identity, at least not before Fanon. Hence the need for Negritude. By considering Fanon's use of noirceur as a case of ‘semantic neologism’, I argue that Fanon's re-appropriation and resignification of the term played a role alongside the more spectacular ‘Negritude’ in the broader effort to represent — indeed, to lexicalize — Blackness in French.

Background and aims In view of restrictions on mobility of patients because of COVID-19 pandemic, face-to-face consultations are difficult. We sought to study the feasibility of telemedicine in this scenario. Methods PubMed and Google Scholar search engines were searched using the key terms ‘telemedicine’, ‘diabetes’, ‘COVID-19 up to 31st March 2020. In addition, existing guidelines including those by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of India, were accessed. Results We discuss evidence and general guidelines regarding role of telemedicine in patients with diabetes along with its utility and limitations. Conclusions Telemedicine is a useful tool for managing patients of diabetes during this lockdown period. However, there is limited data and further research is required.

The application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to high-dimensional cytometry data sets has increasingly become a staple of bioinformatic data analysis over the past decade. This is especially true in the field of cancer biology, where protocols for collecting multiparameter single-cell data in a high-throughput fashion are rapidly developed. As the use of machine learning methodology in cytometry becomes increasingly common, there is a need for cancer biologists to understand the basic theory and applications of a variety of algorithmic tools for analyzing and interpreting cytometry data. We introduce the reader to several keystone machine learning-based analytic approaches with an emphasis on defining key terms and introducing a conceptual framework for making translational or clinically relevant discoveries. The target audience consists of cancer cell biologists and physician-scientists interested in applying these tools to their own data, but who may have limited training in bioinformatics. © 2020 International Society for Advancement of Cytometry.

We reviewed the relevant syphilis diagnostic literature to address the following question: what are the performance characteristics, stratified by the stage of syphilis, for nontreponemal serologic tests? The database search included key terms related to syphilis and nontreponemal tests from 1960–2017, and for data related to the venereal disease research laboratory test from 1940–1960. Based on this review, we report the sensitivity and specificity for each stage of syphilis (primary, secondary, early latent, late latent, or unknown duration; tertiary as well as neurosyphilis, ocular syphilis, and otic syphilis). We also report on reactive nontreponemal tests in conditions other than syphilis, false negatives, and automated nontreponemal tests. Overall, many studies were limited by their sample size, lack of clearly documented clinical staging, and lack of well-defined gold standards. There is a need to better define the performance characteristics of nontreponemal tests, particularly in the late stages of syphilis, with clinically well-characterized samples. Published data are needed on automated nontreponemal tests. Evidence-based guidelines are needed for optimal prozone titrations. Finally, improved criteria and diagnostics for neurosyphilis (as well as ocular and otic syphilis) are needed.

Background Angioleiomyoma is a benign soft tissue tumor that manifests as pain and is more common in the extremities. However, primary intracranial angioleiomyoma is an extremely rare entity that is poorly characterized clinically, radiologically, and histopathologically. We compiled and examined reported cases of intracranial angioleiomyoma to provide an up-to-date summary of the condition. A literature search was performed using PubMed with specific key terms. Selected case studies and case series were then compared, and statistical analyses were performed where appropriate. Case Description A 59-year-old woman presented with epileptic seizures and a 2-month history of progressive headache. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a right temporal pole tumor near the right cavernous sinus. Gross total resection was performed. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination demonstrated an angioleiomyoma. No adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy was administered. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain performed at 6-month follow-up showed no signs of recurrence. Conclusions Primary intracranial angioleiomyoma is an exceedingly rare central nervous system tumor. The clinical and radiologic manifestations are nonspecific. The diagnosis depends on the histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination. For patients with clinical symptoms, surgical resection should be the first-choice treatment.

Purpose of review The present work represents an update of the review published in this journal by Corradi et al., regarding the use of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) to investigate occupational lung diseases. Recent findings The relevant literature was searched in the Medline database, assessed through PubMed using key terms such as 'breath AND condensate AND occupational'. Eleven pertinent publications were retrieved between January 2018 and October 2019. One article only was related to occupational allergy, and the conclusion is that EBC hydrogen peroxide is not an useful marker in laboratory animal allergy. The biomarkers of exposure most often assessed with EBC are metals. However, it is controversial whether this approach has any advantage over the conventional environmental monitoring. The biomarkers of effect studied by the majority of investigations were those related to oxidative stress. They appear consistently elevated upon occupational exposures to various agents, including welding fumes, crystalline silica, nanomaterials and chemicals. Summary Although EBC represent a suitable tool to sample airway lining fluid in a noninvasive manner, it remains a niche approach to the investigation of occupational diseases. The confounding influence of EBC dilution should be better addressed in the expression of the results.

Background: Chitinases are the evolutionary conserved glycosidic enzymes that are characterized by their ability to cleave the naturally abundant polysaccharide chitin. The potential role of chitinases has been identified in the manifestation of various allergies and inflammatory diseases. In recent years, chitinases inhibitors are emerging as an alluring area of interest for the researchers and scientists and there is a dire need for the development of potential and safe chitinase antagonists for the prophylaxis and treatment of several diseases. Objective: The present review expedites the role of chitinases and their inhibitors in inflammation and related disorders. Methods: At first, an exhaustive survey of literature and various patents available related to chitinases were carried out. Useful information on chitinases and their inhibitor was gathered from the authentic scientific databases namely SCOPUS, EMBASE, PUBMED, GOOGLE SCHOLAR, MEDLINE, EMBASE, EBSCO, WEB OF SCIENCE, etc. This information was further analyzed and compiled up to prepare the framework of the review article. The search strategy was conducted by using queries with key terms “ chitin”, “chitinase”, “chitotrisidase”, “acidic mammalian chitinase”, “chitinase inhibitors”, “asthma” and “chitinases associated inflammatory disorders”, etc. The patents were searched using the key terms “chitinases and uses thereof”, “chitinase inhibitors”, “chitin-chitinase associated pathological disorders” etc. from www.google.com/patents, www.freepatentsonline.com, and www.scopus.com. Results: The present review provides a vision for apprehending human chitinases and their participation in several diseases. The patents available also signify the extended role and effectiveness of chitinase inhibitors in the prevention and treatment of various diseases viz. asthma, acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, autoimmune diseases, dental diseases, neurologic diseases, metabolic diseases, liver diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, and cancer. In this regard, extensive pre-clinical and clinical investigations are required to develop some novel, potent and selective drug molecules for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases, allergies and cancers in the foreseeable future. Conclusion: In conclusion, chitinases can be used as potential biomarkers in prognosis and diagnosis of several inflammatory diseases and allergies and the design of novel chitinase inhibitors may act as key and rational scaffolds in designing some novel therapeutic agents in the treatment of variety of inflammatory diseases.

PurposeThis study aimed to examine how Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) data have been used to support scientific discoveries in biomedical and health sciences, and provide insight to researchers who are interested in using MEPS regarding collaborations and dissemination of research output.Design/methodology/approachA bibliometric approach was used to systematically examine the publications that used MEPS data and were indexed by PubMed and Web of Science (WoS). Microsoft Excel and bibliometric tools (WoS and VOSviewer) were utilized for quantitative and bibliometric network analysis. The measures were investigated on the total number of publications by year, research categories, source journals, other datasets/databases co-used with MEPS, funding sources, collaboration patterns, and research topics.FindingsA total of 1,953 eligible publications were included in this study with the numbers growing significantly over time. MEPS data were primarily used in healthcare services, public environmental and occupational health research. The journals that published the most papers using MEPS were all in the healthcare research area. Twenty-four other databases were found to be used along with MEPS. Over 3,200 researchers from 1,074 institutions in 25 countries have contributed to the publications. Research funding was supported from federal, private, local, and international agencies. Three clusters of research topics were identified among 235 key terms extracted from titles and abstracts.Originality/valueOur results illustrated the broad landscape of the research efforts that MEPS data have supported and substantiated the value of AHRQ's effort of providing MEPS to the public.

The aim of the article is development of a technique for visualizing information for use in multimedia applications. In this study, to visualize information, it is proposed first to compile a list of key terms of the subject area and create data tables. Based on the structuring of fragments of the subject area, a visual display of key terms in the form of pictograms, a visual display of key terms in the form of images, and a visual display of data tables are performed. The types of visual structures that should be used to visualize information for further use in multimedia applications are considered. The analysis of existing visual structures in desktop publishing systems and word processors is performed. To build a mechanism for visualizing information about the task as a presentation, a multimedia application is developed using Microsoft Visual Studio software, the C# programming language by using the Windows Forms application programming interface. An algorithm is proposed for separating pieces of information text that have key terms. Tabular data was visualized using the “parametric ruler” metaphorical visualization method, based on the metaphor of a slide rule. The use of the parametric ruler method on the example of data visualization for the font design of children's publications is proposed. Interaction of using the method is ensured due to the fact that the user will enter the size of the size that interests for it and will see the ratio of the values of other parameters. The practical result of the work is the creation of a multimedia application “Visualization of Publishing Standards” for the visualization of information for the font design of publications for children. The result of the software implementation is the finished multimedia applications, which, according to the standardization visualization technique in terms of prepress preparation of publications, is the final product of the third stage of the presentation of the visual form

This article is motivated by the needs to make non-financial indicators more accessible to and clearer for both general public and experts, especially because of the rapid expansion of non-financial indicators and a complete absence of publications that would cover this topic. The main aim of this article is to emphasize the growing influence and contribution of the non-financial indicators related to social and environmental changes in society, which has a significant impact on individual companies. Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to define the key terms and show how they relate to the non-financial indicators. The article also aims to describe the importance and the use of the non-financial indicators and define the future development in the non-financial indicators. Measuring the non-financial indicators of a company is a new practice. The need to include the non-financial aspects in the business’s evaluation has forced economic development, during which the environment has become highly unstable and characterized by global competition and rapid technological progress. The economy has turned into a very tough competitive environment. Even for the purpose of valuing an enterprise, it is not enough to compare its activities only from one point of view. The financial indicators themselves seem insufficient, mainly because they are largely historical and may not be enough for the analysis of the future development. The contribution of this paper is primarily the determination of the non-financial indicators and their influence on society and companies. Non-financial indicators are compared to the financial indicators, as it is so far insufficiently addressed topic. Systems of evaluating the performance of companies based on a combination of indicators (financial and non-financial) could become a tool for managing and enforcing a corporate strategy in the short term and especially long term.

The modern age is characterized by the Internet era, the rapid development of technology and new means of communication and education, including social networks. The aim of this paper is to examine the degree of utilization of Facebook in higher education by students, and educational tools within the network. The first part of the paper refers to definition of key terms in relation to the subject matter of the research, chapters on the social network Facebook in function of education and Facebook groups in education. This section also presents interpretations of previous researches, from published scientific papers and books, on the use of the Facebook social network in high education. The second part presents the research conducted for the purposes of this paper, which showed that a group of surveyed students from the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš use Facebook for educational purposes through Facebook groups. Finally, the results that led to the conclusion are summarized.

Information on the other hand is a set of communication messages, including beliefs of individuals, their views and ideas, scientific laws and theories as well as art and subjective opinions. Information has always constituted a material and form of experiencing humanity. It is necessary for making decisions.Aim: The purpose of the article is to: (1) define key terms included in the study, (2) present the role of information in a modern company on the example of municipal management entities in correlation with information needs of stakeholders from this sector.Results: Defining the stakeholders of municipal management entities and information policy of these entities as well as indicating key tools of this policy. Presenting the findings of the research on information needs of municipal sector stakeholders in the light of making decisions by society.

The purpose of this study was to compare the difference of the methodologies between ISO 22000:2005 and ISO 22000:2018. Compared to the methodology of food safety management system ISO 22000:2005, the methodology of ISO 22000:2018 has not been seen yet. The methodology established in this study was based on the differences of ISO 22000:2018 and ISO 22000:2005 and the abundant experiences of author toward the counseling of verification. The high-level structural management of ISO 22000:2018 can be integrated with other management systems. The risk which was assessed through the severity and possibilities could be converted into an opportunity according to the new method of risk evaluation of ISO 22000:2018 based on the CODEX HACCP. Relatedly, through the implementation of the HACCP system, the key regulatory terms relevant for adherence to ISO 22000:2018 have been added and revised. In particular, the new regulations state that the members of food safety management committees must either possess the expertise required to determine hazards or seek the assistance of outside experts when necessary. This regulation must be effectively implemented in the FSMS of small- and medium-sized enterprises throughout the world. In addition, the key terms and definitions of ISO 22000:2018 such as critical control points, prerequisite programs, and operation prerequisite programs are more clearly defined and consistent with the standard operating procedures of effective food safety management systems. ISO 22000:2018 also pays greater attention to the two “plan, do, check, action” (PDCA) cycles including food safety management system and food safety level. These two PDCA cycles emphasize the need for independent operation but should also be implemented such that they have close synergy and harmony with each other. This methodology was used for the verification of ISO 22000:2018 of seven factories.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a major public health problem—with over 200 million people reporting drug use in 2016. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a powerful tool that can provide insights into the impact of SUDs on cognition. Specifically, modulated gamma activity may provide an index of the pathophysiology of SUDs. Thus, the purpose of this review was to investigate the impact of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, cocaine, and amphetamine on gamma activity, among pre-clinical and clinical populations during acute and chronic exposure and withdrawal states. We searched multiple databases for key terms related to SUDs, EEG, and gamma and ensured rigorous methods by using a standardized review reporting tool. We included 30 studies in this review and found that all substances were associated with modulation of gamma activity, across states and in both preclinical and clinical populations. Gamma oscillations appeared to be differentially modulated in clinical versus preclinical populations and had the most complex relationship with alcohol, indicating that it may act differently than other substances. The findings of this review offer insights into the pathophysiology of SUDs, providing a potential window into novel treatments for SUDs via modulation of gamma activity.

Background Behcet's disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis accompanied by oral-genital ulcers, ocular, cerebral, and gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate BD articles published between 2010–2019 bibliometrically and to provide up-to-date data. A secondary aim was to present a different perspective using altmetric assessments. Methods This bibliometric and altmetric research was performed with data obtained from the Web of Science database. The key terms “Behcet's disease,” “Behcet's syndrome,” and “Behcet” were used for listing the articles. The number of articles, citation data, and active countries were determined. Trend and correlation analyses were performed. Altmetric attention scores (AASs) and Mendeley readers count (MRC) of the articles were acquired for the altmetric evaluations. Results A total of 5,201 articles were listed. After the exclusion criteria, a total of 2,163 articles were obtained for further analysis. A significant and increasing trend was detected in the number of articles from 2010 to 2019 (P < 0.001). Turkey (28.24%), China (9.57%), South Korea (9.20%), Japan (6.38%), and Italy (5.64%) were the five most productive countries. France, the United States and, the United Kingdom were the top three countries in respect of the average number of citations per article. A weak significant correlation was detected between the number of citations and AAS (P < 0.001). The number of citations was significantly and strongly correlated with the MRC (P < 0.001). Conclusion An increasing trend was found in BD research productivity. Outcomes following cochlear implantation vary widely for both adults and children, and behavioral tests are currently relied upon to assess this. However, these behavioral tests rely on subjective judgements that can be unreliable, particularly for infants and young children. The addition of an objective test of outcome following cochlear implantation is therefore desirable. The aim of this scoping review was to comprehensively catalogue the evidence for the potential of functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to be used as a tool to objectively predict and measure cochlear implant outcomes. A scoping review of the literature was conducted following the PRISMA extension for scoping review framework. Searches were conducted in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, and Web of Science electronic databases, with a hand search conducted in Google Scholar. Key terms relating to near infrared spectroscopy and cochlear implants were used to identify relevant publications. Eight records met the criteria for inclusion. Seven records reported on adult populations, with five records only including post-lingually deaf individuals and two including both pre- and post-lingually deaf individuals. Studies were either longitudinal or cross-sectional, and all studies compared fNIRS measurements with receptive speech outcomes. This review identified and collated key work in this field. The homogeneity of the populations studied so far identifies key gaps for future research, including the use of fNIRS in infants. By mapping the literature on this important topic, this review contributes knowledge towards the improvement of outcomes following cochlear implantation.
