Multi-Panda Tracking (MPT) is a video-based tracking task for panda individuals, which is conducive to the observation and measurement of distribution and status of pandas. Different from tracking general objects such as pedestrians and vehicles, MPT is extremely challenging due to the indistinguishable appearances and diversified postures of pandas. In this case, existing tracking methods cannot appropriately tackle with the excessive occlusion between different panda individuals, hence suffering from identity switch, missing and inaccurate detections. To address these problems, we propose a simple yet effective MPT framework in the tracking-by-detection paradigm, which is benefited both from a short-term prediction filtering module and a discriminative feature learning network. In particular, the short-term prediction filtering module introduces similarity learning to enhance the temporal consistency among detections, which is capable of supplementing the missing detections and discarding false positive detections. Besides, the discriminative feature learning network leverages a two-branch network to learn both local and global discriminative features, so as to distinguish different panda individuals with a very similar appearance with a subtle difference. To evaluate the proposed method, we annotate a large-scale MPT dataset, named PANDA2021, which is particularly challenging due to the similar appearance and dramatic occlusion between panda individuals. Experiments on PANDA2021 demonstrate that the proposed MPT method significantly outperforms the competing methods. Moreover, experimental results on pedestrian tracking dataset MOT16 further demonstrate that the proposed MPT method achieves comparative performance with competing methods.

The present work was based on an experimental study on the aerodynamic performance of a flapping wing rotor (FWR) and enhancement by passive pitching angle variation (PPAV) associated with powered flapping motion. The PPAV (in this study 10o~50o) was realized by a specially designed sleeve-pin unit as part of a U-shape flapping mechanism. Through experiment and analysis, it was found that the average lift produced by an FWR of PPAV was >100% higher than the baseline model, the same FWR of a constant pitching angle 30o under the same input power. It was also noted that the lift-voltage relationship for the FWR of PPAV was almost linear and the aerodynamic efficiency was also over 100% higher than the baseline FWR when the input voltage was under 6V. The aerodynamic lift or efficiency of the FWR of PPAV can be also increased significantly by reducing the weight of the wings. An FWR model was fabricated and achieved vertical take-off and free flight powered by 9V input voltage. The mechanism of PPAV function provides a feasible solution for aerodynamic improvement of a bio-inspired FWR and potential application to micro-air-vehicles (MAVs).

The key procedure of haze image translation through adversarial training lies in the disentanglement between the feature only involved in haze synthesis, i.e.style feature, and the feature representing the invariant semantic content, i.e. content feature. Previous methods separate content feature apart by utilizing it to classify haze image during the training process. However, in this paper we recognize the incompleteness of the content-style disentanglement in such technical routine. The flawed style feature entangled with content information inevitably leads the ill-rendering of the haze images. To address, we propose a self-supervised style regression via stochastic linear interpolation to reduce the content information in style feature. The ablative experiments demonstrate the disentangling completeness and its superiority in level-aware haze image synthesis. Moreover, the generated haze data are applied in the testing generalization of vehicle detectors. Further study between haze-level and detection performance shows that haze has obvious impact on the generalization of the vehicle detectors and such performance degrading level is linearly correlated to the haze-level, which, in turn, validates the effectiveness of the proposed method., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, 6 tables

Fish culture plays an important role in supplying high-quality proteins and omega-3 (n-3) long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Aquaculture has been the fastest growing sector in agriculture. Fishmeal is an important component of commercial fish feeds, but ensuring a sustainable supply of fishmeal is in question. A good source of proteins in aquafeeds is insects. For the past 20 years, investigations have been carried out on insect meals as alternative sources for fishmeal. Thus far, the results on replacing fishmeal in feeding aquaculture species have been promising. However, some challenging issues including costs and scaling up of insect production remains. In this review, we aim to summarize the status of applying meals of eight insect species in formulated aquafeeds. We also discussed issues in replacing fishmeal in fish feeds with insect meals and listed some future research directions to make insect meals an important source of proteins for green, profitable and sustainable (GPS) aquaculture. It is certain that in the near future, large-scale insect farming and processing to produce insect meals as an ingredient of fish feeds will have positive impact on the sustainability and profitability of aquaculture.

Iridoviruses are DNA virus and have caused huge economic losses in the aquaculture industry. The aim of this study was to establish a colorimetric loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) protocol for the on-site detection of Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV). The SGIV-VP61 gene was chosen as the target gene to develop a colorimetric LAMP assay. The optimized condition of the colorimetric LAMP assay was incubation at 63 °C for 1 h. Samples infected with SGIV could be detected with the color change from yellow into pink. The sensitivity of the developed assay is 5.66 copies/μL of the viral DNA template. This sensitivity was about 1000 times higher than that of conventional PCR while it was slightly lower than the one-step semi-nested PCR assay. A total of 60 DNA samples extracted from the fin tissue of the SGIV-infected Asian seabass were examined for SGIV by colorimetric LAMP, semi-nested PCR and conventional PCR. The results of the colorimetric LAMP assay showed 94.87 % agreement with the semi-nested PCR. In addition, the DNA extraction method using NaOH showed a better performance in the colorimetric LAMP assay. Taken together, the colorimetric LAMP established was a sensitive, rapid and specific method for the detection of SGIV. SGIV was not detected in samples randomly taken from a genetically improved line of the Asian seabass. However, some seabass obtained from the local markets were found to contain SGIV. Thus, the LAMP assay has the potential application in the diagnosis of iridovirus diseases in the aquaculture industry.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) has high morbidity and mortality rates. A metabolomics approach was employed to determine whether consumption of bean-rich diets for 8 weeks would impact the metabolomic profile of individuals with PAD. Serum and urine, collected from 54 participants with clinical PAD at baseline and after 8 weeks on 0.3 cups beans/day (n = 19), 0.6 cups beans/day (n = 20), or control (n = 23) diet, and the beans were extracted and analyzed using LC-QTOF-MS. As a result, PGE2 p-acetamidophenyl ester, PGF2α diethyl amide and 5-l-glutamyl-l-alanine were significantly changed in the serum or urine of bean groups compared with control. Significant changes (P < 0.05) in the profile and/or levels of 22 flavonoids present in bean extracts showed the potential importance of the mixture of beans used in this study. In a subset of participants taking metoprolol, after 8 weeks the bean-rich diets significantly elevated metoprolol in the serum while reducing it in urine compared with baseline. In addition, the diets significantly enhanced the urinary excretion of metformin. In conclusion, several biochemical pathways including prostaglandins and glutathione were affected by bean consumption. Significant changes in the metabolism of metoprolol and metformin with bean consumption suggested the presence of diet-drug interactions that may require adjustment of the prescribed dose. Different bean types (black, red kidney, pinto, navy) have unique flavonoid profiles. Metabolomics revealed potential diet–drug interactions as serum and/or urinary levels of metoprolol and metformin are modified by bean consumption.

Weakly-supervised Temporal Action Localization (W-TAL) aims at simultaneously classifying and locating all action instances with only video-level supervision. However, current W-TAL methods have two limitations. First, they ignore the difference in video representations between an action instance and its surrounding background when generating and scoring action proposals. Second, the unique characteristics of the RGB frames and optical flow are largely ignored when fusing these two modalities. To address these problems, we present an Action Coherence Network (ACN) for W-TAL. Its core is a new coherence loss which exploits both classification predictions and video content representations to supervise action boundary regression and thus leads to more accurate action localization results. Besides, the proposed ACN explicitly takes into account the specific characteristics of RGB frames and optical flow by training two separate sub-networks, each of which is able to generate modality-specific action proposals independently. Finally, to take advantage of the complementary action proposals generated by two streams, we introduce a novel fusion module to reconcile them and obtain the final action localization results. Experiments on the THUMOS14 and ActivityNet datasets show that the proposed ACN outperforms the state-of-the-art W-TAL methods, and is even comparable to some recent fully-supervised methods. In particular, ACN achieves an mAP of 26.4% on the THUMOS14 dataset under the IoU threshold 0.5.

BACKGROUND Data on the association of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) with the severity of coronary artery disease and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebral events (MACCE) in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are limited and conflicting. OBJECTIVE We established the baseline rate of SCH and followed the trajectory of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) values during and after hospitalisation for PCI for up to six months and determined whether persistent SCH was associated with the severity of coronary artery disease and MACCE in patients with NSTE-ACS after PCI. DESIGN Population-based prospective cohort study. PATIENTS We included patients with NSTE-ACS who underwent PCI with simple balloon angioplasty or stent implantation for coronary heart disease. MEASUREMENTS Thyroid function tests of patients before PCI and 1 day, 1 week, 1 and 6 months after PCI were performed. Cases showing transient SCH were excluded. Patients were divided into two groups based on the results of four TSH tests: 0.27-4.2 mIU/L (n = 1472, 89.7%) and >4.2 mIU/L (n = 170, 10.4%). The risk factors for the severity of coronary artery lesions were estimated using multinomial logistic regression analysis. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to study the relationship between TSH and MACCE. RESULTS Among 1642 patients, there were 1070 males (65.2%) and 572 females (34.8%), with an average age of 62.5 ± 9.6 years. Concrete structures often undergo both fatigue loading and environmental impacts during their useful lifetime. This study aims to explore the fatigue properties of concrete subjected to sulfate attacks under drying–wetting cycles and loading. The coupled influences of major cycle number and sodium sulfate solution on the residual deformation, elastic modulus, and damage variable were investigated by uniaxial cyclic loading tests. Moreover, the phase composition of concrete samples was examined by X-ray diffraction. Results indicate that the concrete residual deformation and damage variable could be classified into initial and stable stages, while the elastic modulus fluctuated within a certain range. The fatigue strength of concrete was found to increase with an increase in the major cycle number and sodium sulfate concentration in the early stages, whereas the fatigue performance of concrete decreased as the major cycle number and sodium sulfate concentration increased in the later stage. The degree of influence of major cycle number and sodium sulfate concentration on the fatigue properties of concrete differed in each stage. These findings can contribute to understand the variation pattern of concrete properties in complicated environments and provide an important reference for associated construction projects.

The optical plasmonic cavity (OPC) including the metallic optical nanoantennas and a metal film exhibits extreme field enhancement for the increased spontaneous emission rate of emitters. The resonance wavelength of the OPC can be easily controlled by the volume of the OPC and the localized surface plasmonic resonances (LSPRs) of the nanoantennas, facilitating the effective coupling of OPC and the emitters. However, involving the OPC into the light emission-enhanced solution-processed devices is still a difficult challenge. The trade-off between the metallic structure of OPC and the solution procedures limits the performance enhancement of the electrical-driven devices. In this work, we construct a device-compatible OPC that allows the characterization of the carrier dynamics of quantum dot (QD) films in the real devices in-suit. The radiative recombination rate and relaxation rate of carriers in QDs are increased by the LSPR effect of the silver nanocubes for luminescence enhancement. The OPC further increases the spontaneous emission rate of QD films, achieving a Purcell factor of 166 and improving the electroluminescence of the OPC-based QD light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). The design of the OPC-involved QLEDs offers a solution for addressing the limitation of fabrication of OPC-combined solution-processed optoelectronic light sources.

Background Protein phosphatase magnesium-dependent 1 delta (PPM1D), also referred to as wild-type p53-induced phosphatase 1 (Wip1) or protein phosphatase 2C delta (PP2Cδ), is an oncogenic nuclear serine/threonine phosphatase belonging to the PP2C family. However, the knowledge regarding PPM1D mRNA expression, tumor immunity, and the prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is scanty. Methods We analyzed PPM1D, including its expression in both the normal and tumor tissue using the Sangerbox database and Tumor Immune Estimation Resource (TIMER). We evaluated its correlation with prognosis in different tumor types by the Kaplan-Meier plotter and Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA). The correlations between PPM1D and the cancer immune infiltrates were determined using TIMER. The correlations between PPM1D expression and gene marker sets of the immune infiltrates were established by both the TIMER and GEPIA. Immunohistochemistry was performed to detect the expression of Wip1 protein encoded by PPM1D in HCC, and the relationship between Wip1 expression and the prognosis of HCC were analyzed. Results We found out that PPM1D mRNA expression was significantly higher in several human cancers, including HCC, than in the corresponding normal human tissues. The PPM1D mRNA high expression in HCC was significantly correlated with poor prognosis. The expression was associated with progression-free survival (PFS) in multiple HCC patients' cohorts (PFS HR = 1.5, P = 0.0066). This was especially in early stage (stage 1) and AJCC_T 1 of HCC. Besides, PPM1D mRNA expression indicated a positive correlation with tumor-infiltrating Monocytes, tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), M1 Macrophage, M2 Macrophage, dendritic cells (DCs), T-helper (Th) and Treg. Wip1 was higher in HCC than paracancerous tissue. High expression of Wip1 was associated with poor prognosis of HCC. Conclusion Our findings suggested that PPM1D mRNA is critical in activating tumor immunity. Besides, they implied that PPM1D could be a potential prognostic biomarker for cancer progression. Moreover, it correlated with tumor immune cell infiltration in HCC.

A semi-supervised image dehazing network was proposed which consists of the supervised branch and the unsupervised branch. In the supervision branch, the encoding–decoding neural network is used as the network structure, and the network is constrained by the supervision loss. In the unsupervised branch, two similar sub-networks are used to estimate the transmission map and atmospheric light, and the unsupervised loss is constructed through prior knowledge to constrain the unsupervised branch. In the semi-supervised image dehazing network, the supervised branch and the unsupervised branch will output dehazing result, respectively. Then by minimizing the reconstruction loss between the two images, the supervised and unsupervised branches are constrained to make the network more generalizable. The entire semi-supervised image dehazing network is trained in an end-to-end manner, and the supervised and unsupervised branch shares weights in the encoding part. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed method has good performance in image dehazing compared with six advanced dehazing methods.

Backgrounds:. Cancer is one of the main causes of death worldwide, seriously threatening human health and life expectancy. We aimed to analyze the cancer incidence and mortality rates during 2016 in Zhejiang Province, Southeast China. Methods:. Data were collected from 14 population-based cancer registries across Zhejiang Province of China. Cancer incidence and mortality rates stratified by sex and region were analyzed. The crude rate, age-standardized rate, age-specific and region-specific rate, and cumulative rate were calculated. The proportions of 10 common cancers in different groups and the incidence and mortality rates of the top five cancers in different age groups were also calculated. The Chinese national census of 2000 and the world Segi population was used for calculating the age-standardized incidence and mortality rates. Results:. The 14 cancer registries covered a population of 14,250,844 individuals, accounting for 29.13% of the population of Zhejiang Province. The total reported cancer cases and deaths were 55,835 and 27,013, respectively. The proportion of morphological verification (MV%) was 78.95% of the population, and percentage of incident cases identified through death certificates only (DCO%) was 1.23% with a mortality-to-incidence ratio (M/I ratio) of 0.48. The crude incidence rate in Zhejiang cancer registration areas was 391.80/105; the age-standardized incidence rate of the Chinese standard population (ASIRC) and the age-standardized incidence rate of the world standard population (ASIRW) were 229.76/105 and 220.96/105, respectively. The incidence rate in men was higher than that in women. The incidence rate increased rapidly after 45 years of age and peaked in individuals aged 80 to 84 years. The top 10 incidence rates of cancers were lung cancer, female breast cancer, thyroid cancer, colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, esophageal cancer, and pancreatic cancer (from highest to lowest). The crude mortality rate in Zhejiang cancer registration areas was 189.55/105; the age-standardized mortality rate of the Chinese standard population (ASMRC) and the age-standardized mortality rate of the world standard population (ASMRW) were 94.46/105 and 93.42/105, respectively. The mortality rate in men was higher than that in women, and the male population in rural areas was higher than that in urban areas. The cancer mortality rate increased rapidly after 50 years of age and peaked in individuals aged 85+ years. The top 10 mortality rates of cancers were lung cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, female breast cancer, prostate cancer, lymphoma, and leukemia (from highest to lowest). Conclusions:. Lung cancer, female breast cancer, thyroid cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, and stomach cancer were the most common cancers in Zhejiang Province. Effective prevention and control measures should be established after considering the different characteristics of cancers in urban and rural areas.

Background: To describe and explain the improvement of Wright C2 transforaminal screw fixation technique. Methods: 23 male patients and 10 female patients (a total of 33 patients, average age of 55 years) were implanted with lamina screws on one side or both sides by improved technique. Adopt improved technology, there is a simple hole in the middle of the lateral brain plate, and the screw can be seen directly to prevent the spine from being invaded. Results: With the improved technique, 169 minutes (90–210 minutes) is the average operation time, and 136 ml (80–420 minutes) is the estimated average blood loss. Average length of 26.5 mm (range 24–30) plate screws. After an average follow-up of 12.4 (1.5–30) months, all patients achieved good clinical outcomes. Conclusions: To modify the Wright’s technique, an additional unicortical “hole” was in the middle of the backplane. Through this improved technique, the screw can be directly seen to be inserted into the dorsal cortex of the lamina, thereby reducing the risk of invading the spinal canal and shortening the operation time.

Background and purpose To commission and implement an Autoencoder based Classification-Regression (ACLR) model for VMAT patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA) in a multi-institution scenario. Materials and methods 1835 VMAT plans from seven institutions were collected for the ACLR model commissioning and multi-institutional validation. We established three scenarios to validate the gamma passing rates (GPRs) prediction and classification accuracy with the ACLR model for different delivery equipment, QA devices, and treatment planning systems (TPS). The prediction performance of the ACLR model was evaluated using mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE). The classification performance was evaluated using sensitivity and specificity. An independent end-to-end test (E2E) and routine QA of the ACLR model were performed to validate the clinical use of the model. Results For multi-institution validations, the MAEs were 1.30–2.80% and 2.42–4.60% at 3%/3 mm and 3%/2 mm, respectively, and RMSEs were 1.55–2.98% and 2.83–4.95% at 3%/3 mm and 3%/2 mm, respectively, with different delivery equipment, QA devices, and TPS, while the sensitivity was 90% and specificity was 70.1% at 3%/2 mm. For the E2E, the deviations between the predicted and measured results were within 3%, and the model passed the consistency check for clinical implementation. The predicted results of the model were the same in daily QA, while the deviations between the repeated monthly measured GPRs were all within 2%. Conclusions The performance of the ACLR model in multi-institution scenarios was validated on a large scale. Routine QA of the ACLR model was established and the model could be used for VMAT PSQA clinically.

The heating method of SCWG reactor is critical to system construction, and almost all existing reactors rely on external heat sources. In this article, the thermodynamic equilibrium model is established to predict the distribution of gasification products from supercritical water gasification of coal. The transformation rule of gas components in the SCWG process of coal and oxidation process of gasification products is explored. Especially, the influence of key parameters such as feedstock concentration, gasification temperature and pressure on the hydrogen yield during the gasification and oxidation processes is also discussed. Based on the above research, the autothermal gasification system for hydrogen production integrated supercritical water gasification of coal and oxidation of gasification products is proposed. The flow matching of supercritical water, coal slurry, and oxygen and its effect on the autothermal hydrogen yield are discussed. By optimizing the flow rate of the reactants, 80% of the hydrogen production efficiency is achieved.

The differences of allele distributions were analyzed using chi-squared analysis and logistic regression.Results: After adjusting covariate factors, rs780668 and rs3764147 polymorphisms influenced susceptibilities to genetically related or unrelated leprosy contact individuals. rs142179458 was associated with onset early cases, rs73058713 A allele and rs3764147 A allele increased the risk of reversal reaction, while rs3764147 G allele had higher risk to present lepromatous leprosy and erythema nodosum leprosum.Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that genetic variants in the LACC1, HIF1A, SLC29A3 and CDH18 genes were positively correlated with the occurrence of leprosy and leprosy clinical phenotypes, providing new insights into the immunogenetics of the disease.Keywords: leprosy, association study, susceptibility gene, polymorphisms

Abandoned houses (AH) are focal points in urban communities by threatening local security, destroying housing markets, and burdening government finance in the U.S. legacy cities. In particular, individual-level AH detection provides essential information for fine-resolution urban studies, government decision-makers, and private sector practitioners. However, three primary conventional data sources (field data, utility data, and remote sensing data) cannot suffice to collect such fine-resolution data in the large spatial area via a cost-effective approach. To this end, Google Street View (GSV) imagery, which emerges as the mainstream open-access data source with global coverage, provides an opportunity to address this issue. Subsequently, a follow-up challenge confronting the detection of AH arises from the fact that it lacks an effective method that can discern authentic visual features from the redundant noise in GSV images. In this study, we aim to develop an effective method to detect individual-level AH from GSV imagery. Specifically, we developed a new hierarchical deep learning method to leverage both global and local visual features of AH in the detection. The method can be further divided into three steps: (1) Scene-based classification that can extract global visual features of AH was implemented through fine-tuning a pre-trained deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model. (2) We developed a patch-based classification method that can extract specific local features of AH. In this method, patches were generated from GSV images based on auto-detected local features, followed by being labeled as three categories: building patches, vegetation patches, and others. Two deep CNN models were employed to identify deteriorated building facade patches and overgrown vegetation patches, respectively. (3) Individual-level AH were detected by integrating scene classification results and patch classification results in a decision-tree model. Experimental results showed that the F-score of AH was 0.84 in a well-prepared dataset collected from five different Rust Belt cities. The proposed hierarchical deep learning approach effectively improved the accuracy comparing with the traditional scene-based method. In addition, the proposed method was applied to generate an AH map in a new site in Detroit, MI. Our study demonstrated the feasibility of GSV imagery in AH detection and showed great potential to detect AH in a large spatial extent.

BACKGROUND The metastasis of liver cancer to skeletal muscle is extremely rare compared to other sites. We herein report a case of rapidly developing skeletal metastases following liver transplantation due to primary liver cancer. CASE SUMMARY A 70-year-old male with underlying chronic hepatitis B virus infection was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), for which he underwent liver transplantation in 2014. Six years after receiving the transplant, pathological examination confirmed the presence of HCC without vascular invasion. He was admitted to the hospital with a rapidly growing mass on his right thigh. Ultrasound examination revealed a mixed echo mass in the lateral soft tissue of the middle part of the right femur. Magnetic resonance imaging showed heterogeneous iso-signal intensity on T1-weighted images and heterogeneous hyper-intensity on T2-weighted images compared to the surrounding muscles. Pathological examination of the ultrasound-guided needle biopsy specimen revealed that it was similar to the previously detected liver cancer; the diagnosis was metastasis of HCC. Surgical excision was performed. There were no other sites of metastasis, and the patient recovered well after surgery. CONCLUSION This report presents a rare case of skeletal metastasis following liver transplantation for HCC. The study suggests a possible role for skeletal muscle metastasis mechanisms, which should be the focus of future research.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been widely adopted but they are vulnerable to intentionally crafted adversarial examples. Various attack methods against DNNs have been proposed, yet there still lacks theoretical explanation of adversarial examples. In this paper, we aim to understand adversarial examples from the attacking process and we assume adding perturbations to the key/sensitive regions of the image could fool image classification DNNs. We propose gradient shielding to verify the assumption which ignores insensitive information during generating adversarial examples. Specifically, we propose interactive gradient shielding (IGS) method which selects sensitive regions and then applies gradient-based attack. To remove region selection, we propose adaptive gradient shielding (AGS) method which ignores insensitive gradients automatically. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the performance and the results also corroborate our perspective. With this method, we won the first place in IJCAI-AAAC 2019 Non-targeted Adversarial Attack competition.

Background To compare the efficacy and safety of microwave ablation (MWA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as first-line treatments for perivascular HCC. Methods This multicentre study enrolled 170 patients with perivascular HCC who underwent MWA or RFA. The ablation response, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and complications between the treatment groups for the total and propensity score-matched (PSM) cohorts were compared. Results The disease control rates for MWA and RFA were similar in total (94% vs. 91%, p = 0.492) and PSM (93% vs. 93%, p = 1.00) cohorts. The PFS rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 71%, 55% and 52% in MWA group and 61%, 33% and 28% in RFA group (p = 0.017). The OS rates were comparable between two groups in total (p = 0.249) and PSM cohorts (p = 0.345). In subgroup analyses, the PFS of patients with periportal HCC (45 vs. 36 months, p = 0.048) and a single HCC nodule (51 vs. 42 months, p = 0.014) were significantly better in MWA group than RFA. Major complications were more frequent in the MWA group than in RFA (27% vs. 7%, p Conclusion Compared with RFA, MWA provides better control of tumour progression especially in periportal HCC or single-nodule perivascular HCC patients.

We present an efficient approach for temporal action co-localization (TACL), which means to simultaneously localize all action instances in an untrimmed video. Compared with the conventional instance-by-instance action localization, TACL can exploit the contextual and temporal relationships among action instances to reduce the localization ambiguities. Motivated by the strong relational modeling capability of graph neural networks, we propose a Graph-based Temporal Action Co-Localization (G-TACL) method. By considering each action proposal as a node, G-TACL effectively aggregates contextual and temporal features from related action proposals to jointly recognize and localize all action instances in a single shot. Moreover, we introduce a novel multi-level consistency evaluator to measure the relatedness between any two action proposals. This is achieved by considering their high-level contextual similarities, low-level temporal coincidences and feature correlations. We exploit the Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) to iteratively update the features of each node, which are then used to regress the temporal boundaries of action proposals and finally achieve action co-localization. Experimental results on three datasets, i.e., THUMOS14, MEXaction2 and ActivityNet v1.3 datasets demonstrate that our G-TACL is superior or comparable to the state-of-the-arts.

Splenectomy and splenic artery embolization are major treatment options for hypersplenism and portal hypertension in liver cirrhosis, but may lead to splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT), which is potentially lethal. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the incidence of SVT in liver cirrhosis after splenectomy or splenic artery embolization and the risk factors for SVT. All relevant studies were searched through the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases. The incidence of SVT in liver cirrhosis after splenectomy or splenic artery embolization was pooled. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Sixty-six studies with 5632 patients with cirrhosis were included. The pooled incidence of SVT after splenectomy and splenic artery embolization was 24.6% (95% CI 20.2–29.3%) and 11.7% (95% CI 7.1–17.3%), respectively. A meta-analysis of three comparative studies demonstrated that the incidence of SVT after splenectomy was statistically similar to that after splenic artery embolization (OR 3.15, P = 0.290). Platelet count, mean platelet volume, preoperative splenic or portal vein diameter, preoperative or postoperative portal blood velocity, splenic volume and weight, and periesophagogastric devascularization were significant risk factors for SVT after splenectomy. Postoperative use of preventive antithrombotic therapy was a significant protective factor against SVT after splenectomy. SVT is common in liver cirrhosis after splenectomy and splenic artery embolization. Coagulation and hemostasis factors, anatomical factors, and surgery-related factors have been widely identified for the assessment of high risk of SVT after splenectomy. Prophylactic strategy after splenectomy, such as antithrombotic therapy, might be considered in such high-risk patients. In this article, we investigate the privacy issue of the remote state estimation problem in cyber-physical systems. Specifically, in the presence of an eavesdropper, a sensor observes a discrete linear time-invariant process and then sends the measurements to a remote state estimator with arbitrary finite kinds of transmission options through an unreliable wireless channel. The transmission options of the sensor are in silence state or transmitting aided by injection noise with different energy levels. The eavesdropper wiretaps the channel when the sensor transmits packets to the estimator. Aiming at minimizing the remote estimation error and the cost of the sensors transmission energy while maximizing the eavesdropper state estimation error, we theoretically prove that there exist some structural properties for the optimal transmission schedule for both the known and the unknown eavesdropper's estimation errors. Numerical simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis.

Background NKX6.1 is a transcription factor for insulin, as well as a marker for β cell maturity. Abnormal NKX6.1 expression in β cells, such as translocation from the nucleus to cytoplasm or lost expression, has been shown as a marker for β cell dedifferentiation. Methods We obtained pancreatic sections from organ donors and immunofluorescence staining with NKX6.1 and insulin was performed to characterize NKX6.1 expression in subjects with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Results Our results showed that cells with insulin expression but no nucleic NKX6.1 expression (NKX6.1Nuc-Ins+), and cells with cytoplasmic NKX6.1 expression but no insulin expression (NKX6.1cytIns−) were significantly increased in T2DM subjects and positively correlated with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), indicating the elevated β cell dedifferentiation with NKX6.1 inactivation in T2DM. To investigate whether β cell dedifferentiation has initiated in subjects with higher risks for T2DM, we next analyzed the association between β-cell dedifferentiation level in ND subjects with different ages, body mass index, and HbA1c. The results showed the absolute number and percentage of dedifferentiated β cells with NKX6.1 inactivation did not significantly change in subjects with advanced aging, obesity, or modest hyperglycemia, indicating that the β cell dedifferentiation might mainly occur after T2DM was diagnosed. Conclusion Our results suggested that NKX6.1 expression in β cells was changed in type 2 diabetic subjects, evidenced by significantly increased NKX6.1Nuc-Ins+ and NKX6.1cytIns− cells. This abnormality did not occur more frequently in subjects with a higher risk for T2DM, suggesting that β cell dedifferentiation might be secondary to the pathological changes in T2DM.

Background Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is reportedly associated with an increased risk of adverse events in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The prognostic significance of SCH in the elderly was poorly defined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between SCH and long-term outcomes in older patients undergoing PCI. Methods Three thousand one hundred sixty-eight patients aged 65 years or older who underwent PCI from January 2012 to October 2014 were included. Patients were divided into SCH group (n = 320) and euthyroidism (ET) group (n = 2848) based on thyroid function test. Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were used to estimate the relative risks (RRs) of all-cause death and cardiac death for patients with SCH during a 4-year follow-up period. Results There were 227 deaths during the follow-up period including 124 deaths caused by cardiac events. There was no significant difference in mortality rate between the SCH group and the ET group (p > 0.05). After adjustment for covariates, compared with patients with ET, the RRs of death from all-cause and cardiac in patients with SCH were 1.261 (95%CI: 0.802–1.982, p = 0.315) and 1.231 (95%CI: 0.650–2.334, p = 0.524), respectively. When SCH was stratified by age, gender, and degree of thyroid-stimulating hormone elevation, no significant associations were also found in any stratum. Conclusion Our investigation revealed that SCH was negatively associated with the outcome of PCI in older patients.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand the antecedents of peer recommendations (generating positive word-of-mouth and recruiting others) in the context of mobile social games.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on the needs–supplies fit framework and social identity theory, this paper proposes that game design characteristics (challenge, fairness, innovativeness and ease of use) influence game identification, which further predicts word-of-mouth (WOM) generation and recruitment intention. This paper further suggests fits between gamer orientation (passing time and seeking achievements) and game design lead to enhanced game identification. The model was tested using data from an empirical survey with 767 mobile social gamers.FindingsGame challenge, game fairness, game innovativeness and ease of use are positively associated with game identification, whereas game identification positively predicts WOM generation and recruitment intention. Achievement-seeking use was found to enhance the effects of game challenge and game fairness on game identification, and passing time use was found to strengthen the effects of game innovativeness and ease of use on game identification.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings of this study provide operable implications to facilitate peer recommendations in a mobile gaming context. The model was only tested within the context of mobile social games, however, so caution is advised when generalizing the findings to other game subgenres.Originality/valueThis study distinguishes itself from other peer recommendation studies by taking recruitment, a more straightforward and salient form of peer recommendation, into account. This paper enriches theory by investigating the antecedents and consequences of game identification. This study clarifies the underlying mechanism of how game design influences peer recommendations and examines the interactions between game design and gamer orientation.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory reaction of pancreatic tissue self-digestion, edema, hemorrhage, and even necrosis after the activation of pancreatic enzymes in the pancreas caused by a variety of etiologies. This study was aimed to explore the functions and mechanism of Wip1 in AP. Twenty male SD rats were randomly assigned into 2 groups (control group: saline treatment; AP group: cerulein treatment). And cerulein-treated AR42J cells were conducted as AP model in vitro. The levels of amylase were detected by using the Beckman biochemical analyzer. The levels of IFNβ and TNFα were analyzed by ELISA. The autophagosomes were observed by transmission electron microscopy. The Wip1-specific shRNAs were transfected to AR42J cells to silence the expression of Wip1. The levels of Wip1 were measured by qRT-PCR and Western blot. The levels of STING/TBK1/IRF3 and LC3 were measured by Western blot. The AP model was successfully constructed by cerulein administration. Wip1 was notably upregulated in AP models. Autophagy and STING pathway activation were involved in the development of AP. Wip1 inhibition counteracts the promotion effect on inflammatory response induced by cerulein in AR42J Cells. Wip1 inhibition inhibited the activity of the STING/TBK1/IRF3 and reduced LC3 levels in AP. This study preliminarily explored that Wip1 could regulate autophagy and participate in the development of AP through the STING/TBK1/IRF3 signaling pathway.

Yellow-emitting YAG:Ce transparent ceramic is recognized as an ideal color converter in high-power blue LEDs and LDs, but the absence of scattering centers in its microstructure leads to a low light extraction efficiency and poor light uniformity. Here, taking advantage of the scattering effect and the transparency of YAG:Ce ceramics, Ce-free YAG phase was used as a second component to form a composite with YAG:Ce phosphor. The sintered YAG:Ce-YAG ceramic possessed a high transparency of ∼63 % and a thermal conductivity of 8.9 Wm−1 K−1. Due to its beneficial thermal properties and high external quantum efficiency of 70.2 %, the YAG:Ce-YAG ceramic could be excited under a high blue-laser flux density of up to 9.60 W/mm2 and showed a luminous emittance of 1220 lm/mm2. Due to light scattering arising from the slightly different refractive indices of the two phases, the designed YAG:Ce-YAG ceramic showed better lighting effects than a single-phase transparent YAG:Ce ceramic.

Purpose Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is a routine operation for the treatment of osteoporotic lumbar compression fractures (OLCFs). As is well known, unilateral puncture is a common method. However, with the conventional transpedicular approach (CTPA), the cement may be asymmetrically dispersed, so some surgeons use the transverse process root-pedicle approach (TPRPA). The objective of this study was to compare the clinical results and bone cement distribution of PVP for OLCF with unilateral TPRPA and CTPA to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the two surgical options. Patients and methods From January 2016 to June 2019, seventy-two elderly patients who underwent unilateral PVP for single-level OLCF were retrospectively reviewed. Operation time, injection amount and type of bone cement distribution, and bone cement leakage and surgical complications were recorded. The visual analog scale (VAS) scores and Oswestry disability index (ODI) scores were used to evaluate the clinical results. All patients were followed up for more than 12 months, and the assessment was based primarily on clinical and radiological outcomes. Results There were significant differences in the surgical time and the volume and the type of bone cement distribution and the lost of operative vertebra height between the two groups. However, there was no significant difference in bone cement leakage. Moreover, there were no significant differences in VAS and ODI between the two groups at 2 days and 12 months after the operation. Conclusions Unilateral TPRPA and CTPA are practical and feasible methods in PVP for the treatment of OLCF, and they have similar clinical effects. However, TPRPA has the advantages of a better distribution of bone cement and a shorter operation time and a better maintenance effect of injured vertebra height, without increasing the rate of bone cement leakage.

This paper studies the classification of unbalanced data sets. First, this kind of data sets is briefly introduced, and then the classification methods of unbalanced data sets are analyzed in detail from different perspectives such as data sampling method, algorithm level, feature level, cost-sensitive function, and deep learning. In addition, the data sampling methods are divided into different technologies for introduction: unbalanced data set classification method based on synthetic minority over-sampling technology (SMOTE), support vector machine (SVM) technology, and k-nearest neighbor (KNN) technology, etc. Then, the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are compared. Finally, the evaluation criteria of the unbalanced data set classifier are summarized, and the future work directions are prospected and summarized.

Objective Population-level economic burden is essential for prioritizing healthcare resources and healthcare budget making in the future. However, little is known about the economic burden of lung cancer in China. Methods A prevalence-based approach was adopted to estimate the economic burden of lung cancer, including direct expenditure (medical and non-medical) and indirect cost (disability and premature death). Data on direct expenditure and work-loss days per patient in each year post-diagnosis were obtained from two primary surveys. Other parameters were obtained from literatures and official reports. Projections were conducted based on varying parameters. All expenditure data were reported in United States dollars (USD) using 2017 value (exchange rate: 1 USD= 6.760 CNY), with the discount rate of 3%. Results The total economic burden of lung cancer was estimated to be 25,069 million USD in China in 2017 (0.121% of gross domestic productivity, GDP). The estimated direct expenditure was 11,098 million USD, up to 1.43% of total healthcare expenditure for China, covering 10,303 million USD and 795 million USD for medical and non-medical expenditure, respectively. The estimated indirect cost was 13,971 million, including 1,517 million USD due to disability and 12,454 million USD due to premature death. Under current assumptions, the projected total economic burden would increase to 30.1 billion USD, 40.4 billion USD, and 53.4 billion USD in 2020, 2025, and 2030, accounting for 0.121%, 0.131%, and 0.146% of China's GDP, respectively. However, if China meets the United Nation sustainable development goal of reducing premature death from non-communicable diseases by one-third by 2030, the total economic burden in 2030 would be 31.9 billion USD, 0.087% of China's GDP. Conclusions The economic burden of lung cancer in China in 2017 is substantial and more likely to increase significantly in the future. Policy makers need to take urgent actions in budget making for health systems. The economic burden could be alleviated by reducing the disease burden of lung cancer via effective control and prevention actions.

With the target of simultaneously segmenting semantically related videos to identify the common objects, video object cosegmentation has attracted the attention of researchers in recent years. Existing methods are primarily based on pair-wise relations between adjacent pixels and regions, which are susceptible to performance degradation from object entries/exists or occlusions. Specifically, we refer these video frames without the common objects present as the “empty” frames. In this paper, we propose a multilevel hypergraph-based full Video object CoSegmentation (VCS) method, which incorporates high-level semantics and low-level appearance/motion/saliency to construct the hyperedge among multiple spatially and temporally adjacent regions. Specifically, the high-level semantic model fuses multiple object proposals from each frame instead of relying on a single object proposal per frame. A hypergraph cut is subsequently utilized to calculate the object cosegmentation. Experiments on four video object segmentation/cosegmentation datasets against state-of-the-art methods with both objective and subjective results manifest the effectiveness of the proposed VCS method, including the SegTrack and VCoSeg datasets without “empty” frames, the XJTU-Stevens dataset with 3.7% “empty” frames, and the Noisy-ViCoSeg dataset proposed together with our method with 30.3% “empty” frames.

Vegetation maps are the product of vegetation research, which contain professional ecology information in terms of both vegetation types and spatial distribution patterns. They are important and basic data for revealing the distribution features of plants and communities, which can provide not only a solid foundation for research in ecology and geography, but also useful reference information for the development of agriculture, forestry, husbandry and ecological construction. The brief overview of the origin and development of global vegetation mapping was showed in this paper. And the compiling history and achievements of national and regional vegetation maps of China were reviewed. Vegetation mapping of China started in the 1950s. The vegetation maps of China (1:8,000,000), published in 1960, firstly showed 129 alliance-level vegetation types of the whole country. Subsequently, national vegetation maps (i.e., 1:4,000,000 and 1:1,000,000), provincial and regional vegetation maps of various scales were published successively. In the future, vegetation map compilation should fully utilize modern science and technology, be based on sufficient field survey data and vegetation ecology research. Meanwhile, multi-source and multi-temporal remote sensing data and big data of ecological geographic information, combined with artificial intelligence (e.g., deep learning) classification methods are also required.

Summary To simulate the drying process of cut tobacco in a batch rotary dryer, six different models of equilibrium moisture content were selected to calculate the driving force of mass transfer, and a mathematical model of heat and mass transfer was numerically solved. The multi-objective nonlinear problem of heat and mass transfer coefficients was optimized by employing a weight factor. The simulation results showed that the weight factor r was an important parameter for fitting results of moisture content and temperature. The model evaluation indices almost reached their minimal values with r at 0.1. For all the six equilibrium/classic models the fit was better for moisture content than for temperature. One model (M-Hen/C) was superior to other equilibrium/classic models and the REA (reaction engineering approach) model. This study aims for an understanding of heat and mass transfer in the tobacco drying process, and provides a theoretical framework to support the prediction of temperature and moisture in various drying situations.

Despite the marked progress in recent years, structured light-based three-dimensional (3D) measurement techniques still have difficulty in capturing mirror surface reflection. The accuracy of 3D reconstruction for mirror objects should be further improved to adapt to the high reflectivity and curvature of such objects. To improve the stripe definition and reconstruction accuracy of highly reflective mirror objects, this paper analyzes the local blur of defocus stripes in phase measuring deflectometry (PMD) system, and presents a method to analyze the spatially varying defocusing and de-blurring, with the aid of a 3D block matching algorithm, thereby focusing on defocus stripes. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve micron-level reconstruction accuracy of standard flat mirrors, and detect the defects on highly reflective mirror objects at a high precision.

Introduction Benefit and risk of anticoagulation in cirrhotic patients with portal vein thrombosis (PVT) remain controversial, especially in those with asymptomatic PVT and in non-liver transplant candidates. Furthermore, the predictors of portal vein recanalization and bleeding events after anticoagulation are critical for making clinical decisions, but still unclear. We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the outcomes of anticoagulation for PVT in liver cirrhosis and explore the predictors of portal vein recanalization and bleeding events after anticoagulation. Methods All studies regarding anticoagulation for PVT in liver cirrhosis were searched via PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases. Thrombotic outcomes, bleeding events, and survival were compared between anticoagulation and non-anticoagulation groups. Predictors of portal vein recanalization and bleeding events were pooled. Background Increased permeability of blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a major pathophysiological mechanism of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) in the elderly. The reduced beneficial gut microbiome due to aging results in a decline in the production of sodium butyrate (NaB), which might enhance the BBB permeability. The present study investigated whether gut microbiome or NaB could improve the postoperative cognitive function in aged and gut dysbiosis mouse model. Methods A total of 210 male C57BL/6 J mice were randomly and equally divided into 7 groups (young control, young anesthesia/surgery, young anesthesia/surgery + antibiotic, aged control, aged anesthesia/surgery, aged anesthesia/surgery + Lactobacillus, aged anesthesia/surgery + NaB). Lactobacillus mix and antibiotic mix were administered by oral gavage to establish the gut dysbiosis and microbiome restoration model. Splenectomy was performed under sevoflurane anesthesia. Spatial memory learning ability was measured by Y maze. BBB permeability was detected by FITC-dextran imaging and brain tissue dextran spectrum. Tight junction (TJ) protein of hippocampus brain tissue was quantitated by Western blot. Result Aging and antibiotic mix decreased the expression of the TJ, increased the BBB permeability and induced POCD, which could be reversed by the application of Lactobacillus and NaB. Conclusion Lactobacillus and NaB increased the expression of TJ protein between endothelial cells (ECs), reduced the BBB permeability, and consequently protected the postoperative cognitive functions of the aged and gut dysbiosis mice.

Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea (TECSA) is a specific form of sleep-disordered breathing, characterized by the emergence or persistence of central apneas during treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. The purpose of this review was to summarize the definition, epidemiology, potential mechanisms, clinical characteristics, and treatment of TECSA. We searched for relevant articles up to January 31, 2020, in the PubMed database. The prevalence of TECSA varied widely in different studies. The potential mechanisms leading to TECSA included ventilatory control instability, low arousal threshold, activation of lung stretch receptors, and prolonged circulation time. TECSA may be a self-limited disorder in some patients and could be resolved spontaneously over time with ongoing treatment of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). However, central apneas persist even with the regular CPAP therapy in some patients, and new treatment approaches such as adaptive servo-ventilation may be necessary. We concluded that several questions regarding TECSA remain, despite the findings of many studies, and it is necessary to carry out large surveys with basic scientific design and clinical trials for TECSA to clarify these irregularities. Further, it will be vital to evaluate the baseline demographic and polysomnographic data of TECSA patients more carefully and comprehensively.

To compare the performance of three-level EuroQol five-dimensions (EQ-5D-3L) and five-level EuroQol five-dimensions (EQ-5D-5L) among common cancer patients in urban China. A hospital-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in three provinces from 2016 to 2018 in urban China. Patients with breast cancer, colorectal cancer, or lung cancer were recruited to complete the EQ-5D-3L and EQ-5D-5L questionnaires. Response distribution, discriminatory power (indicator: Shannon index [H′] and Shannon evenness index [J′]), ceiling effect (the proportion of full health state), convergent validity, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were compared between the two instruments. A total of 1802 cancer patients (breast cancer: 601, colorectal cancer: 601, lung cancer: 600) were included, with the mean age of 55.6 years. The average inconsistency rate was 4.4%. Compared with EQ-5D-3L (average: H′ = 1.100, J′ = 0.696), an improved discriminatory power was observed in EQ-5D-5L (H′ = 1.473, J′ = 0.932), especially contributing to anxiety/depression dimensions. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and the inhibition of pro-cancer proteases are non-invasive anticancer therapeutics that attract increasing attentions for their enhanced specificities and milder systemic toxicities compared to traditional therapeutics. These modalities offer advantages to compensate for the shortcomings of their counterparts. For instance, PDT or PTT efficiently eliminates locally confined tumor cells while exhibiting no effect on metastatic tumor cells. In contrast, the inhibition of pro-cancer proteases systemically suppresses the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells but does not eradicate existing cancer cells. To synergize these therapeutics, we hereby report a versatile nanoparticle that integrates the effects of PDT, PTT, and enzyme-inhibition. This nanoparticle (CIKP-NP) was synthesized by covalently or non-covalently modifying a photothermal nanoparticle with a photosensitizer, a pro-cancer protease inhibitor, and an albumin-binding molecule. After confirming the PDT, PTT, albumin-binding, and enzyme-inhibition properties at the molecular level, we demonstrated that CIKP-NP killed tumor cells through PDT or PTT and suppressed tumor cell invasion through enzyme-inhibition. In addition, through a breast cancer xenograft mouse model, we demonstrated that CIKP-NP suppressed tumor growth by PDT or PTT effect. Notably, the synergism of PDT and PTT significantly enhanced its anticancer efficiency. Furthermore, CIKP-NP significantly suppressed cancer metastasis in a lung metastatic mouse model. Last, biodistribution and the in vivo retention of CIKP-NP confirmed the tumor-targeting property. Beyond demonstrating the anti-tumor and anti-metastatic efficacy of CIKP-NP, our study also suggests a new strategy to synergize multiple anticancer therapeutics.

Acute portomesenteric vein thrombosis is potentially lethal. In the present paper, a cirrhotic patient with a previous history of esophageal variceal bleeding presented with acute occlusive portomesenteric vein thrombosis, but achieved complete recanalization by low-molecular-weight heparin followed by rivaroxaban. Notably, no bleeding episode occurred during anticoagulation therapy. This case supported early initiation of anticoagulation in such patients.

Background and objectives Malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast (MPTB) is a kind of rare tumor. Our objective was to investigate the role of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) in MPTB patients. Methods MPTB patients were identified in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. Kaplan–Meier curves and multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses were conducted to determine the effect of adjuvant RT on MPTB patients. Propensity-score matching (PSM) method was used to balance the clinicopathological characteristics. Results A total of 1353 MPTB patients were included in our study and the median follow-up time was 99 months (range: 0–331 months). 16.7% (226) MPTB patients received adjuvant RT, of which 49.1% (111) received mastectomy and 50.9% (115) underwent breast conservation surgery (BCS). Patients receiving adjuvant RT were more likely to be white, with better differentiation and larger tumors (p p > 0.05). In subgroup analysis, no subgroup benefited from adjuvant RT. Exploratory analysis showed a survival benefit trend from adjuvant RT in patients with tumor larger than 50 mm and undergoing BCS. Conclusions Among MPTB patients, adjuvant RT did not improve OS or DSS. In patients with tumor larger than 50 mm and receiving BCS, a survival benefit trend from adjuvant RT existed.

Background and objectives Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) are recognized as an advantaged source for the prevention and treatment of diverse diseases including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, alterations in characteristics of ASCs from the aforementioned T2DM patients are still obscure, which also hinder the rigorous and systematic illumination of progression and pathogenesis. Methods and results In this study, we originally isolated peripancreatic adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells from both human type 2 diabetic and non-diabetic donors (T2DM-ASCs, ND-ASCs) with the parental consent, respectively. We noticed that T2DM-ASCs exhibited indistinguishable immunophenotype, cell vitality, chondrogenic differentiation and stemness as ND-ASCs. Simultaneously, there's merely alterations in migration and immunoregulatory capacities in T2DM-ASCs. However, differing from ND-ASCs, T2DM-ASCs exhibited deficiency in adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation, and in particular, the delayed cell cycle and different cytokine expression spectrum. Conclusions The conservative alterations of T2DM-ASCs in multifaceted characteristics indicated the possibility of autologous application of ASCs for cell-based T2DM treatment in the future.

BackgroundConcurrent chemoradiotherapy is the common first-line treatment for patients with advanced cervical cancer. However, radioresistance remains a major clinical challenge, which results in recurrence and poor survival. Many studies have shown the potential of Delta-like Ligand 4 (DLL4) as a novel prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in many solid tumors. Previously, we have found that high DLL4 expression in tumor cells may predict the pelvic lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis in patients with cervical cancer. In our present study, we further studied the effects of DLL4 on the biological behavior and radiosensitivity of cervical cancer cells.MethodsThe expression of DLL4 and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) phenotype markers in cervical cancer cell lines or tissues were detected using Western blotting, and the expression of DLL4 mRNA in cervical cancer cell lines or tissues was detected using Quantitative real-time PCR. The effect of DLL4 on cell proliferation, migration, and radiosensitivity was evaluated using the CCK8 assay, flow cytometry, Transwell assays for cell invasion and migration, and Immunofluorescence staining in vitro.ResultsThe expression of DLL4 in radiotherapy-resistant SiHa cells was significantly higher than that in radiotherapy-sensitive Me-180 cells. Furthermore, downregulation of DLL4 enhanced the radiosensitivity of SiHa and Caski cells via the inhibition of cell proliferation, promotion of radiation-induced apoptosis, and inhibition of the DNA damage repair. Moreover, downregulation of DLL4 inhibited the EMT and reduced the proliferation, invasion, and migration ability in SiHa and Caski cells. Consistent with the DLL4 expression in the cell lines, the expression of DLL4 in the tissues of the radioresistant group was also higher than that of the radiosensitive group.ConclusionsDownregulation of DLL4 inhibited the progression and increased the radiosensitivity in cervical cancer cells by reversing EMT. These results indicated the promising prospect of DLL4 against the radioresistance and metastasis of cervical cancer and its potential as a predictive biomarker for radiosensitivity and prognosis in patients with cervical cancer patients receiving concurrent chemoradiotherapy (cCRT).
