Background:. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth cause of cancer death in China. We aimed to provide national and subnational estimates and changes of CRC premature mortality burden during 2005–2020. Methods:. Data from multi-source on the basis of the national surveillance mortality system were used to estimate mortality and years of life lost (YLL) of CRC in the Chinese population during 2005–2020. Estimates were generated and compared for 31 provincial-level administrative divisions in China. Results:. Estimated CRC deaths increased from 111.41 thousand in 2005 to 178.02 thousand in 2020; age-standardized mortality rate decreased from 10.01 per 100,000 in 2005 to 9.68 per 100,000 in 2020. Substantial reduction in CRC premature mortality burden, as measured by age-standardized YLL rate, was observed with a reduction of 10.20% nationwide. Marked differences were observed in the geographical patterns of provincial units, and they appeared to be obvious in areas with higher economic development. Population aging was the dominant driver which contributed to the increase in CRC deaths, followed by population growth and age-specific mortality change. Conclusions:. Substantial discrepancies were observed in the premature mortality burden of CRC across China. Targeted considerations were needed to promote a healthy lifestyle, expand cost-effective CRC early screening and diagnosis, and improve medical treatment to reduce CRC mortality among high-risk populations and regions with inadequate healthcare resources.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are bacterial infections that 1) commonly affect females, 2) can pose high risks to impair kidney function, 3) are often treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, and 4) are associated with high recurrence rates due to the evolution of drug-resistant strains. To choose the appropriate antibiotic, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) among a panel of antibiotics should be determined before administration to avoid inadequate dosing or use of wrong antibiotics. To meet with the unmet needs, we developed a bead-based method for bacterial preconcentration with capture rates ranging from 20-50% and then automatically performed on-chip AST on an automated device which was composed of a pneumatic control module, a temperature control module and a chip image processing module. The developed portable system was capable of automatically conducting AST and MIC measurements using urine samples (via image analysis) in only 4.5-9 h and tested on four common UTIs bacterial strains. This compact system may therefore be promising for point-of-care personalized medicine in the near future.

Wideband signal detection is an important problem in wireless communication. With the rapid development of deep learning (DL) technology, some DL-based methods are applied to wireless communication and have shown great potential. In this paper, we present a novel neural network for detecting signals and classifying signal types in wideband spectrograms. Our network utilizes the key point estimation to locate the rough centerline of the signal region and recognize its class. Then, several regressions are carried out to obtain properties, including the local offset and the border offsets of a bounding box, which are further synthesized for a more fine location. Experimental results demonstrate that our method performs more accurate than other DL-based object detection methods previously employed for the same task. In addition, our method runs obviously faster than existing methods, and it abandons the candidate anchors, which make it more favorable for real-time applications.

Short-wave radio is an indispensable long-distance means of communication, among which Morse signals, which rely on simplicity and efficiency, plays an import role in military and civilian applications. Automatic Morse detection and recognition have been researched for several years, but some thorny problems in actual communication always restrict the performance of methods. In this article, by introducing deep learning technology, we propose a network named MorseNet that can simultaneously locate and decode Morse signals in the spectrogram. MorseNet uses shared convolutions to extract shared features for both the detection and recognition branches. The detection branch regresses bounding boxes based on signal centerlines, and the recognition branch decodes Morse fragments cropped from feature maps by a convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN). The losses of two branches are combined to implement the end-to-end training. Experimental results on four “simulated Morse + real background” datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in both detection and recognition, and it effectively improves four problems that have long been troublesome in accomplishing the tasks. Furthermore, the joint training strategy and architecture give MorseNet advantages over its two-stage deployment in terms of accuracy, speed, and model size.

Aims: Catheter ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) has been shown to be effective and safe. However, recurrence of PAF varies between 10 and 30% for radiofrequency ablation. There have been no reports comparing long-term recurrence rates following radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, and three-dimensional guided cryoablation plus radiofrequency ablation. The aim of this study was to observe the long-term recurrence rate of PAF when treated by these three catheter ablation methods, and to explore clinical factors that can potentially predict PAF recurrence following catheter ablation.Methods: There were 238 patients involved in this study, including 106 radiofrequency (RF) ablation cases (RF group), 66 cryoablation cases (Freeze group), and 66 cases treated by three-dimensional guided cryoablation combined with radiofrequency ablation (Freeze-plus-RF group). All patients underwent standardized follow-up. The recurrence rate of atrial fibrillation (AF) in the three groups was calculated. Predictive factors for the recurrence of AF were also investigated.Results: At 48 months (the median follow-up period), the sinus rhythm maintenance rate was 77.4% in the RF group, 72.7% in the Freeze group, and 81.8% in the Freeze-plus-RF group. The maintenance rate of sinus rhythm was highest in the Freeze-plus-RF group, but differences among the three groups were not statistically significant. Further analysis found that the preoperative left atrial appendage emptying velocity (LAAEV) (recurrence vs. no recurrence, 56.58 ± 18.37 vs. 65.59 ± 18.83, respectively, p = 0.003), left atrial (LA) anteroposterior dimension (recurrence vs. no recurrence, 36.56 ± 4.65 vs. 35.00 ± 4.37, respectively; p = 0.028), and LA vertical dimension (recurrence vs. no recurrence, 56.31 ± 6.96 vs. 53.72 ± 6.52, respectively; p = 0.035) were related to postoperative recurrence. Multiple Cox regression analysis showed that only LAAEV was predictive of postoperative recurrence of PAF (hazard ratio: 0.979; 95% confidence interval: 0.961–0.997).Conclusion: Our study found that there was no statistically significant difference in long-term recurrence rates among the RF, Freeze, and Freeze-plus-RF groups. Preoperative LAAEV is an independent predictor of postoperative recurrence of PAF.

Purpose Adult-onset immunodeficiency with anti-interferon (IFN)-γ autoantibodies (anti-IFN-γ Abs) is an immunodeficiency syndrome. Immune dysfunction in this distinct disorder remains to be clarified. Methods We prospectively collected blood samples of 20 patients with anti-IFN-γ Abs and 65 healthy normal subjects. Percentages of lymphocyte subpopulations, most relevant to T-, B-, and NK-cells, and percentages of stimulated lymphocytes with cytokine production were assessed using eight-color flow cytometry. The results were adjusted to age and absolute lymphocyte counts.Results Most (85%) patients presented non-tuberculous mycobacterial infection. Skin lesions were predominantly manifested by neutrophilic dermatoses. Involved lymph nodes had granulomatous inflammation, except 22.2% showing atypical lymphoid hyperplasia without granuloma formation. In the multiple linear regression model, CD4+ T cells and non-activated subpopulations (recent thymic emigrants and naïve subtypes) were significantly decreased with increased expression of activation markers and polarization to Th1, Th17, and Treg. The percentage of NK cells was increased, but two major NK subpopulations, CD56bright and CD56+CD16+ subsets were decreased. Furthermore, NK cells diminished expression of NKp30 and NKp46 with increased CD57 expression. The cytokine production was significantly lower, namely TNF-α in CD4+ T cells (P = 0.009), CD8+ T cells (P < 0.001), and NK cells (P = 0.002); IFN-γ in CD8+ T cells (P = 0.002) and NK cells (P = 0.001); and IL-2 in CD4+ (P < 0.001), and CD8+ (P = 0.005) T cells. Conclusion We conclude that the immune system in patients with anti–IFN-γ Abs could be exhausted which may contribute to the distinct clinicopathologic features.

Background Catheter ablation has emerged as a major strategy for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). Atrial electrical remodeling (AER) plays a critical role in the recurrence of PAF after ablation. Hypothesis To characterize the immediate trends of AER during ablations in patients with PAF, and assess the relationship between immediate trends and recurrence. Methods We performed this prospective observational study of 135 patients to investigate AER following three ablation modes: radiofrequency ablation (RFA), cryoablation (CA) and 3D mapping‐guided cryoablation (3D‐CA). The atrial effective refractory period (AERP) and atrial conduction time (ACT) were measured via electrophysiology before and immediately after ablation, and P‐wave indices were measured via electrocardiography before and within 24 h after ablation. Follow‐up visits were conducted for at least 1 year or until relapse. Results Different approaches of ablation caused a fairly significant increase in the shortest P‐wave duration and AERP in both the proximal coronary sinus (PCS) and distal coronary sinus (DCS) but caused a shortened P‐wave dispersion. No different effect was found at the AERP among the three modes. Compared to patients who received CA, among patients who received RFA, a significant reduction in total ACT and right ACT was seen. Statistically, there was a weakly positive association between changes in total ACT and early recurrence. Conclusions Injury during ablation for PAF was associated with an increase in the AERP but not in the ACT. Total ACT and right ACT were shorter after RFA than after CA. The increase in total ACT were slightly predictive of early recurrence.

Background: A single procedure combining left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) plus catheter ablation (CA) has been proven to be safe and feasible for treating atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the influence of treatment modality on left atrial (LA) function is not thoroughly explained.Objective: We aimed to investigate the changes of LA function in persistent AF patients undergoing concomitant LAAC and CA.Methods: The study population comprised 65 patients who underwent combined AF ablation and Watchman LAAC (combined therapy group) in our center, and 65 participants of the AF simple ablation group who were matched based on sex, age, CHA2DS2-VASc score and HAS-BLED score using propensity score matching. During the 1-year follow-up period, two-dimensional echocardiography and speckle tracking echocardiography were performed to assess LA reservoir, conduit, and contractile function.Results: The combined therapy was associated with a significant improvement in the LA reservoir function with increased expansion index and strain indices, including strain and strain rate (SR) during ventricular systole. Conduit function with SR during early ventricular diastole was also improved, as was contractile function with active atrial emptying fraction and SR during atrial systole. Similarly, LA reservoir and contractile function indices all improved continuously during follow-up after catheter ablation alone. At 3 months follow-up LA reservoir and conduit function with strain indices had a tendency to improve only in the simple procedure group. At 1-year follow-up there was no significant difference in either LA volumes or strain indices between the two groups.Conclusion: Both the combined therapy group and the simple ablation group demonstrated significant improvement in LA function. Based upon the fact that LA function was improved in both groups it might be concluded that most of the effects appeared to result from ablation, not LAAC; furthermore the additional LAAC procedure did not affect the improvement of LA function after CA.

Information diffusion and virus propagation are fundamental processes, which achieve great attention in networks. While information spreads across the network, but the relations between the nodes, the underlying relation network, are usually unknown, and the authors only observe the time which transactions take place between nodes, called communication actions. Furthermore, the content of such transactions is unknown in many applications. They tackle these challenges by developing the NetMine algorithm to infer the relations between nodes and find out the underlying relation network, which is hidden from them. Given the times when nodes transmit a message to others (i.e. who sends a message to whom at some explicit time), they infer the optimal underlying relation network that best explains the observed communication actions. They demonstrate the effectiveness of their algorithm on synthetic and real networks, outperforming the art-of-date algorithms related to this problem.

CUL4A regulate the termination of autophagy in a physical process. However, the relationship between CUL4A and autophagy in cancer is unclear. We retrospectively investigated 99 intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) cases. Whole sections were used for immunohistochemical analysis for p62, and LC3B expression. Q-score was defined as the sum of the labeling intensity and proportion. The cut-off point for immunoreactivity was set. CUL4A was overexpressed in cell lines and autophagy reflux was compared after manipulation. The iCCA cases with CUL4A overexpression had significantly higher prevalence of intact activated autophagy (42.4 vs. 15.2%; p = 0.003), which was significantly associated with advance tumor stage (34.1% vs. 15.4%; p = 0.032), less extensive necrosis (8.3 vs. 49.3%; p < 0.001), and shortened disease-free survival (mean, 19.6 vs. 65.5 months, p = 0.015). In vitro, iCCA cells with CUL4A overexpression significantly increased LC3II level as compared to the cells under basal condition. Although both cell types showed intact autophagy with increased LC3II expression after bafilomycin A1 treatment, the accumulation of LC3II was higher in CUL4A-overexpressing cells. CUL4A overexpression increased the proliferation of cells as compared with control cells. After treatment with bafilomycin A1, proliferation was inhibited in both cell types, but the effects were more prominent in the cells overexpressing CUL4A. CUL4A promotes autophagy, and exhibits significantly higher autophagic flux which affects the proliferation of iCCA cells; these effects correlated with advance tumor stage and poor prognosis. Thus, targeting autophagy may be potentially therapeutic in iCCA.

Primary brainstem haemorrhage (PBH) is characterized by acute onset, rapid deterioration, many complications, and poor prognosis. Its treatment has been controversial. This study aimed to explore the clinical risk factors of postoperative survival and neurological function recovery of stereotactic aspiration in the treatment of PBH. The clinical data of 65 patients with severe brainstem haemorrhage from February 2019 to February 2020 in the First Hospital of Hebei Medical University were reviewed. All patients were treated with stereotactic haematoma aspiration. We determined the survival status of patients at 30 days after the operation and the recovery of neurological function at 90 days. The modified Rankin Scale score (mRS) was used to assess the survival status. The 30-day mortality rate was 23.1% (15 patients). The proportion of patients with good neurological recovery at 90 days after the operation was 32.3% (21 patients). According to the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the haematoma classification was an independent risk factor for postoperative survival (OR = 0.197, 95% CI: 0.016–0.385, p = 0.046) and recovery of neurological function 90 days after surgery (OR = 0.019, 95% CI: 0.001–0.267, p = 0.003). The haematoma classification is an independent risk factor for 30-day mortality and recovery of neurological function 90 days after surgery. Massive and basal-tegmental haematomas were associated with higher mortality. The prognosis of patients with unilateral and bilateral tegmental haematoma was better than that of patients with other haematoma types.

Objectives Severe hyperkalemia can cause life-threatening arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, or death. This study aimed to investigate the incidence and the associated factors relevant to critical hyperkalemia (≥6 mmol/L) among inpatients, outpatients, and emergency department. Their clinical outcomes were also analyzed. Methods All patients whose high serum potassium values had been reported as critical laboratory values in 2016 were enrolled. Their demographic data, comorbidities, clinical symptoms, biochemical data, and outcomes were reviewed and collected. The Charlson comorbidity score (CCS) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were computed to assess the comorbidity burden and renal function. Patients were divided into groups according to different settings, potassium and GFR levels, and their survival. Results Of the 293,830 total serum potassium tests, 1,382 (0.47%) reports were listed as critical laboratory values. The average reply time was 6.3 min. Their mean age was 67.2 years, while the average GFR was 12.2 mL/min/1.73 m2. The overall mortality rate was 34%. Patients in the emergency department had the highest incidence (0.92%), while inpatients had the worst outcome (51% mortality). The leading cause of mortality was septic shock. The fatal group had higher rates of clinical symptoms, higher potassium values, CCS, and eGFR (all p Conclusions Most of the responses for the reports were obtained within a short period of time. Patients with reported high critical serum potassium values were characterized by high rates of comorbidity, reduced eGFR, and mortality. The incidence, clinical manifestations, and outcomes varied in the different clinical settings.

Background: Catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) has been gaining popularity; however, the trend of inflammatory response markers in patients treated with different catheter ablation strategies over time and their predictability of AF recurrence remain unknown. Methods: A total of 210 patients with AF were enrolled and grouped according to surgical mode as follows: freeze group, RF group, and freeze3D group. The subjects were tested for related indexes before and after surgery. To determine AF recurrence during follow up, 24-h ambulatory electrocardiography was performed at two, three, six, and 12 months after surgery. Results: The inflammation indexes of the three groups peaked between one and three days after surgery but fell at different time points (P < .05). The recurrence rate of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) was positively correlated with the increase in the percentage of white blood cells and neutrophils after surgery (P < .05). Conclusions: The postoperative inflammation indices peaked and fell at different time points after different catheter ablation methods. In addition, the recurrence rate of AF in patients treated with freeze3D is lower.

The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused significant challenges throughout the world and a rapid, reliable diagnostic test is in high demand. Real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was one of the most quickly established methods of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) detection and is considered to be the gold standard. In this report, we share our experience of using two different testing platforms: the cobas 6800 SARS-CoV-2 test, an automated system that was recently granted Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA, and a laboratory-developed test based on the protocol from the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC). There was an overall 96.2% agreement between the two platforms. However, the positive agreement between the two platforms was only 80.0%. We found 3 instances of discordance between the two systems and this emphasized the need for timely diagnosis with a reliable testing platform.

GPS (global positioning system) signals are direct-sequence spread-spectrum signals. The receiver relies on locally reproduced pseudo-random codes to keep tracking and dispreading the navigation signals. Due to the correlation characteristics of pseudo-random codes, scholars generally believe that only two identical signals that are separated by half a chip error have correlation, which brings high time synchronization accuracy requirements to GPS spoofing technology. In this paper, the research and analysis of the principle of the GPS receiver are carried out. It is found that the GPS spoofing technology can achieve a signal time synchronization error of 1.5 chips and proposed that the correlation peak loss due to chip error can be compensated by the transmit power in the meantime. The detailed theoretical derivation proof is given in the article. Finally, simulation experiments are performed to obtain the minimum spoofing power. The results show that under this error condition, GPS spoofing can be effectively implemented.

Background The influenza virus is a highly infectious disease, with a notably rapid transmission rate. Autophagy is triggered by viral infection and is a survival mechanism exerted to maintain cellular homeostasis. Catechin is a representative phenolic acid which exerts anti-inflammatory responses against influenza A virus infection. The aim of this study is to explore the anti-H1N1 influenza virus effects by catechin associated with the restoration of autophagy. Methods XTT assay was used to detect cellular viability. The inhibitory effects on the H1N1 influenza virus were assessed by hemagglutination assay, neuraminidase activity, and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The protein levels of H1N1 influenza virulence and autophagic markers were detected by Western blot. Results We herein demonstrated that catechin had no cytotoxic effect on both infected and noninfected A549 cells and exerted protective effects on infected A549 cells. The results of the hemagglutination assay, neuraminidase activity, and qRT-PCR to examine viral load demonstrated that catechin effectively inhibited the replication of the H1N1 influenza virus. The virulent M2 protein and viral nucleoprotein were also inhibited after treatment with catechin. As for the autophagic markers, the LC3B protein was notably decreased by catechin in a dose-dependent manner, while the amount of autophagic vacuoles in H1N1 influenza virus-infected cells also decreased after catechin treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion Collectively, the autophagy activated by the H1N1 influenza virus could be reversed after catechin treatment. This study indicates that catechin effectively inhibits H1N1 viral proliferation and thus may be applied as an adjuvant in future clinical application.

Objective: The present study was to compare the incidence of septal defect (SD) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who received radiofrequency ablation or cryoablation. Methods: A total of 293 AF patients were performed with radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation. Cardiac ultrasonography was performed to calculate left atrial diameter (LAD), left atrial ejection fraction (LAEF%), strain rate (SR), left ventricular systolic (SRs), left ventricular diastolic (SRe), and left atrial systole (SRa) before surgery, 3 months and 1 year after surgery. The patients were followed up to observe statin and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI)/angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) medication, AF recurrence, 6-min walk test, stroke, any symptoms caused by arrhythmia, and re-hospitalization. Results: The levels of LAD and SD were higher, while SRe and SRa were lower in the cryoablation group in the comparison with the radiofrequency ablation group after surgery (P

Low-level cadmium exposure has adverse effects on chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, the risk factors for elevated blood cadmium levels (BCLs) have not been studied in CKD. We conducted a cross-sectional investigation in 200 CKD patients and stratified them by the tertiles of BCL to compare their demographic, environmental, and biochemical data. The factors associated with BCL were identified, and their effects were examined in subgroups. In the analyses, female sex, smoking, and CKD stage 5D were associated with high BCL, and statin was inversely correlated with BCL (odds ratio [95% confidence interval, CI], 6.858 [2.381–19.746], p < 0.001, 11.719 [2.843–48.296], p = 0.001, 30.333 [2.252–408.520], p = 0.010, and 0.326 [0.122–0.873], p = 0.026; deviations of BCL [nmol/L, 95% CI], 2.66 [1.33–4.00], p < 0.001, 3.68 [1.81–5.56], p < 0.001, 3.38 [0.95–5.82], p = 0.007, and −2.07 [−3.35–−0.78], p = 0.002). These factors were also independently correlated with BCL in subgroups, including non-dialysis CKD, hypertensive patients, non-smokers, and male patients. In conclusion, female sex, smoking, and CKD stage 5D were the major risk factors for elevated BCL; additionally, statins were negatively associated with BCL in CKD.

Gaseous zero-valent mercury (Hg0) emitted from coal-fired power plants results in serious environmental problems, therefore, it is important to remove Hg0 emitted from the power plants. Herein, a novel material with a flower-shaped spherical appearance was used for the removal of Hg0. A BiOBr0.5I0.5/WS2 solid solution with {1 1 0} exposed facets of BiOBr0.5I0.5 and {1 0 4} exposed WS2 facets was synthesised through a simple self-assembly method. BiOBr0.5I0.5/WS2 exhibited excellent photoactivity under visible light, which is attributed to the synergetic effects of the exposed low facets, high surface area, and optimized band structure. Particularly, a 40- wt%-WS2-coated BiOBr0.5I0.5 photocatalyst exhibited the highest Hg0 removal of 87.52% via photocatalytic oxidation. These Z-scheme heterojunction with facets exposed can efficient separate electron-hole pairs and improve the visible light absorption performance. Further analysis indicate that BiOBr0.5I0.5/WS2 is an effective photocatalyst for solar energy utilization and environmental remediation.

Background CUL4A has been known for its oncogenic properties in various human cancers. However, its role in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) has not been explored. Methods We retrospectively investigated 105 iCCA cases from a single medical institution. Tissue microarrays were used for immunohistochemical analysis of CUL4A expression. CUL4A expression vectors were introduced in cell lines. Cell migration and invasion assays were used to compare the mobility potential of iCCA cells under basal conditions and after manipulation. Then we evaluated the effects of CUL4A on the cell growth by proliferation assay, and further checked the susceptibility to cisplatin in iCCA cells with or without CUL4A overexpression. Results CUL4A overexpression was detected in 34 cases (32.4%). Patients with CUL4A-overexpressing tumors exhibited shortened disease-free survival (mean, 27.7 versus 90.4 months; P = 0.011). In the multivariate analysis model, CUL4A overexpression was shown to be an independent unfavorable predictor for disease-free survival (P = 0.045). Moreover, stably transfected CUL4A-overexpressing iCCA cell lines displayed an increased mobility potential and enhanced cell growth without impact on susceptibility to cisplatin. Conclusions Our data demonstrate that overexpression of CUL4A plays an oncogenic role in iCCA and adversely affects disease-free survival. Thus, it may prove to be a powerful prognostic factor and a potential therapeutic target.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a commonly encountered heart arrhythmia and a risk factor for cardiovascular system. The purpose of the present study was to explore the role of long non-coding RNA myocardial infarction-associated transcript (MIAT) in AF and AF-induced myocardial fibrosis and the possible mechanisms involved in this process. We successfully induced an AF rat model. Expression of MIAT presented a dramatic increase, while microRNA (miR)-133a-3p presented a dramatic decrease in atrium tissues of rats with AF induction. In addition, we also found that MIAT was highly expressed and miR-133a-3p was significantly reduced in peripheral blood leukocyte of AF patients. For biological function exploration of MIAT/miR-133a-3p axis, MIAT was knocked down using small hairpin RNA (shRNA) lentivirus injection and the rescue experiments were performed simultaneously by inhibiting miR-133a-3p using anti-miR-133a-3p lentivirus injection in rats with AF. MIAT downregulation significantly alleviated AF, increased atrial effective refractory period (AERP), and reduced the duration of AF as well as cardiomyocytes apoptosis. Whereas these effects of MIAT downregulation on AF were reversed by anti-miR-133a-3p administration. Luciferase reporter revealed that miR-133a-3p was directly regulated by MIAT. Polypharmacy is routinely administered to fight severe infections, though it has led to rampant multi-drug resistance in many bacterial strains. Preferably, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) would be carried out prior to antibiotic prescription, though it is generally thought to be too complex and labor-intensive. In order to assist clinicians with better antibiotic administration for the effective treatment of bacterial infections, an integrated microfluidic system (IMS) capable of automating AST for 1-2 antibiotics against clinical bacterial pathogens was developed herein. Accurate determination of the minimum and fractional inhibitory concentrations of vancomycin, gentamicin, and linezolid were determined by assaying growth of two clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates via a colorimetric assay on-chip. By applying various antibiotic combinations against a single pathogen in multiple chambers, the IMS could identify the optimal drug combination and the minimum effective dosage by evaluating the fractional inhibitory concentration index. Restoration of sinus rhythm in atrial fibrillation (AF) by radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) is associated with a transient stunning of left atrial (LA) function. However, the long-term effects of different ablation strategies on LA function remain undetermined. We performed randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effects of RFCA, cryoablation, and 3D mapping-guided cryoablation on LA function of proximal AF patients within 1 year. The 3D mapping-guided cryoablation was defined as a maximum of two cryoablation procedures for each pulmonary vein accompanied by RFCA for additional points until complete pulmonary vein isolation was achieved. Conventional and speckle tracking echocardiographic analyses were performed to evaluate LA function. Among the 210 patients (70 in each group) included, a trend of decreasing LA systolic and diastolic function was observed in all groups, as evidenced by decreases in peak A-wave velocity, the global LA peak systolic strain, the peak strain rate, the peak early diastolic strain rate, and the peak late diastolic strain rate within 7 days to 3 months after ablation followed by gradual recovery thereafter. However, the temporal changes in the above four strain parameters among the three groups did not differ significantly within 1 year after ablation (all p > 0.05). Parameters of the LA emptying fraction and LA dimensions were not significantly affected. These results suggested that stunning of LA function occurred within 7 days to 3 months after ablation, and different strategies of AF ablation did not differentially affect the temporal changes in LA function up to 1 year after ablation.

There have been growing needs for text processing, such as classifying, retrieving and clustering. The foundation of such a process is to extract features, which can best describe the text. Great progress has been made in text modelling. However, most of the text modelling methods are based only on the content, nor only on the attributes. Although there have been some combined models proposed in recent years, the lack of universality limits such models. In this study, the authors propose a uniform attribute-content model, which uses the attributes to influence the content feature extraction process. They design the attributes as a special filter to each feature extracted from the content. Thus the mixed features contain both content information and attribute information, which can describe the text more precise. They also propose a Monte Carlo method to solve this model. Experimental results on the Enron email dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the authors’ proposed models.

Aims The aim of this study was to compare the results of 16S/28S rRNA sequencing with the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and synovial fluid analysis in the diagnosis of prosthetic joint infection (PJI). Patients and Methods Between September 2015 and August 2016, 214 consecutive patients were enrolled. In the study population, there were 25 patients with a PJI and 189 controls. Of the PJI patients, 14 (56%) were women, and the mean age at the time of diagnosis was 65 years (38 to 83). The ESR and CRP levels were measured, and synovial fluid specimens were collected prospectively. Synovial fluid was subjected to reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)/sequence analysis targeting the 16S/28S rRNA, and to conventional culture. Laboratory personnel who were blind to the clinical information performed all tests. The diagnosis of PJI was based on the criteria of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society. Results A total of 25 patients had a confirmed PJI. In 20 cases of monomicrobial PJI, the PCR products could be perfectly matched with the 16S/28S rRNA genes specific for different species of bacteria provided by sequence analysis. Of the five polymicrobial cases of PJI, 16S/28S rRNA PCR sequence analysis failed to identify the concordant bacteria species. In the 189 control patients, there was one false-positive RT-PCR result. The sensitivity and specificity of the molecular diagnosis method were 100% (95% confidence interval (CI) 85.7 to 100) and 99.5% (95% CI 97.1 to 99.9), respectively, whereas the positive and negative predictive values of PCR were 96.1% (95% CI 79.6 to 99.9) and 100% (95% CI 98.1 to 100), respectively. The PCR results were significantly better than serological diagnostic methods (p = 0.004 and p = 0.010 for ESR and CRP, respectively), the synovial fluid white blood cell (WBC) count (p = 0.036), and percentage of polymorphonuclear cells (PMN%) (p = 0.014). Conclusion Stepwise RT-PCR and sequence analysis of the 16S/28S rRNA carried out under stringent laboratory conditions achieved highly sensitive and specific results for the differentiation between aseptic and septic joints undergoing arthroplasty. Sequence analysis successfully identified bacterial strains in monomicrobial infections but failed to identify molecular targets in polymicrobial infections. Exposure to phthalates has been demonstrated to have adverse effects on male reproduction in animal studies, but findings in human studies have been inconsistent. We recruited 1040 men from the Reproductive Center of Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, China from March to June 2013. Each man provided one semen sample and two urine samples. Semen quality parameters and the urinary concentrations of eight phthalate metabolites were determined. After multivariable adjustments, the urinary concentrations of monobutyl phthalate (MBP) were found to be positively associated with the below-reference sperm concentration and total sperm count, and the odds ratios (ORs) comparing extreme MBP quartiles were 2.01 (95% CI: 1.07, 3.79; p for trend=0.06) and 1.80 (95% CI: 1.05, 3.08; p for trend=0.02), respectively. Objective To investigate myocardial apoptosis and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins [B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) and Bax], cardiac hypertrophy, and function in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) during aging. Methods Male SHR (n = 36) and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY, n = 30) were monitored for their cardiac function from 14 to 102 weeks of age using echocardiography. Myocardial apoptosis in the subendocardium and subepicardium was analyzed using TUNEL staining. The apoptosis-related proteins (Bcl-2 and Bax) were assessed by Western blot analysis. Results Left ventricular mass index (LVMI) in SHR increased progressively with age. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) showed no significant difference from 14 to 66 weeks of age, but decreased significantly in SHR from 84 to 102 weeks of age. The apoptotic index (APOI) of myocardial cells in SHR increased with age, in which subendocardial APOI (APOI-endo) increased at 66 weeks and was significantly higher than the age-matched WKY (9.83 ± 3.97 vs. 4.03 ± 2.06, P < 0.05). Additionally, the subepicardial APOI (APOI-epi) increased significantly at 84 weeks of age (P < 0.05). Bax/Bcl-2 ratio was higher in SHR than WKY at 66 weeks (3.98 ± 0.80 vs. 0.29 ± 0.06, P < 0.05), and enhanced further at 102 weeks of age (10.54 ± 1.60 vs. 0.70 ± 0.13, P < 0.05). Myocardial APOI was positively correlated with LVMI (r = 0.83, P < 0.01), negatively with LVEF in 66–102 weeks (r = −0.81, P < 0.01), and positively with Bax/Bcl-2 ratio (r = 0.79, P < 0.01). Conclusion Myocardial apoptosis increases with aging and is associated with progressive left ventricular remodeling and cardiac dysfunction in SHR.

We sought to investigate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the genes involved in βAR signaling with the response of patients to βAR blockers. A total of 2403 hospitalized patients with chronic heart failure (HF) were enrolled in a multicenter observational study as the first cohort and followed up for a mean period of 20 months. Genes for β1AR, β2AR, and the major cardiac G-protein-coupled receptor kinases (GRKs) GRK2 and GRK5 were analyzed to identify SNPs, and patients were stratified according to genotypes. A second independent cohort enrolling 919 patients with chronic HF was applied to validate the observed associations. The signaling properties of the key identified SNPs were assessed in vitro. Our data showed that HF patients harboring the Gly16 allele in the gene for β2AR (ADRB2) had an increased risk of the composite end point relative to patients who were homozygous for Arg16. Notably, these patients showed a beneficial response to βAR-blocker treatment in a G allele-dose-dependent manner, whereas Arg16 homozygotes had no response to βAR-blocker therapy. This Arg16Gly genotype-dependent heterogeneity in clinical outcomes of HF was successfully validated in the second independent population. Besides, the in vitro experiments revealed that G allele carriers were defective in β2AR-coupled inhibitory adenylate cyclase g (Gi) protein signaling.

The World Health Organization, in a 2016 revision, introduced recurrent genetic abnormalities for classifying mature T- and NK-cell neoplasms. However, the role of genetic analyses from lymph node aspiration cytology is still not elucidated. We hypothesize that the use of genetic analyses may increase the accuracy of diagnosis from cytological preparations.Fifty-seven formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples were collected for next-generation sequencing (NGS) targeting potential driver mutations including TET2, DMN3TA, IDH2, RHOA, STAT3, and STAT5B. Competitive allele-specific TaqMan polymerase chain reaction (cast-PCR) was performed to validate the mutation status by using FFPE and preoperative fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) samples.Among these six candidate genes, only IDH2 and RHOA mutations were significantly more frequent in nodal subtypes, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified (PTCL, NOS) (P = .002 and0.001, respectively). All genes exhibited different mutation patterns except RHOA with a hotspot mutation involving the Gly17 residue. The RHOA G17V mutation was found in 15 (75%) of 20 AITL and two (22%) of nine PTCL, NOS. Cast-PCR using FFPE samples showed 100% concordance with NGS. Among 12 lymph node aspirates, the preliminary diagnoses were suspicious for lymphoma (3, 25%), atypical lymphoid cells (3, 25%) and benign/negative (6, 50%). Cast-PCR detected the RHOA G17V mutation in six (75%) of eight RHOA-mutated aspirates and revealed negative results in all (100%) of four wild-type aspirates, with an 83.3% (10/12) concordance comparing to FFPE samples.The RHOA G17V mutation serves as a useful biomarker for cytological assessment in AITL. The use of cast-PCR is valuable in the diagnosis of malignant lymphomas from cytological preparations, and thus avoiding the potential risks of invasive procedures.

Limited data are available about the role of common variants at the aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 gene (ALDH2) on the clinical outcome in Chinese patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In the present study, a total of 1089 patients were consecutively enrolled from January 2012 and July 2013. Six common variants at ALDH2 gene, including rs2339840, rs4648328, rs4767939, rs11066028, rs16941669, and rs671, were selected to test the associations of those polymorphisms with the cardiovascular outcome in patients with CHD after PCI. The clinical endpoints included cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal stroke. The composite of clinical endpoints was defined as the primary endpoint, and every endpoint alone was considered as the secondary endpoints. The median follow-up time was 38.27 months. Our results showed that the common variant rs2339840 was independently associated with a lower risk of stroke in patients with CHD after PCI (codominant model, HR = 0.32, 95% CI, 0.11–0.91, P = .074 for heterozygotes; HR = 0.25, 95% CI, 0.06–1.14, P = .033 for homozygotes; dominant model, HR = 0.32, 95% CI, 0.14–0.74, P = .007). However, no significant associations were found between other 5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and the clinical endpoints. For the first time, the common variant rs2339840 was reported to be a protective factor against stroke in CHD patients with PCI.

Background Platelets play an important role in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Patients with ACS have an increased mean platelet volume (MPV) and immature platelet fraction (IPF) resulting in elevation of thrombotic ability. In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic performance of MPV and IPF in identifying suspected ACS patients at emergency department. Moreover, we investigated the correlation between MPV or IPF with initial troponin I (TnI), one of the current ACS biomarkers. Methods This was a single-center study recruiting suspected ACS patients who had acute chest pain at the emergency department. Whole blood samples were obtained from all participants and MPV and IPF were measured by Sysmex XE-5000 hematology analyzer within 20 min of blood sampling. The diagnostic values of MPV and IPF in identifying ACS were analyzed retrospectively. Result In this study, 63 in 104 suspected ACS patients were diagnosed as ACS (65.3%). This paper presents the design of a wireless, implantable, multi-channel, programmable stimulator with arbitrary channel combination. A novel channel management module using a switch array is presented, enabling arbitrary channel configuration with a silicon area reduction of 81%. The chip was fabricated in a 0.18- μ m Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing company (TSMC) high voltage (HV) complementary metal–oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. A stimulator system was realized using the proposed integrated circuit (IC). A wireless communication link was established between a specified Android-based graphical user interface (GUI) and the proposed device for control of the stimulation pattern and wireless battery charging. The size of the entire system occupies a volume of only 14 mm × 14 mm × 4 mm (without the battery). Experimental results demonstrated a successful independent configuration between different channels, as well as an arbitrary channel combination, as expected.

To explore the in situ metabolic characteristics of yeasts involved in the spontaneous fermentation process of Chinese strong-flavoured liquor, a comparison was conducted between solid-state fermentation (SSF) and submerged fermentation (SmF) when supplemented with 24 indigenous yeast strains, with a focus on the production of ethanol and a broad range of volatile compounds responsible for the characteristics of Chinese strong-flavoured liquor. Under the various experimental conditions, the 24 indigenous yeast strains showed different influences on the mixed fermentation system. The fluctuations caused by different yeast strains in the mixed system were less than those caused by the different fermentation modes relative to the formation of flavour compounds. SSF was found to be more suitable for the production of ethanol, methanol and ethyl lactate, whereas SmF was more suitable for the production of 10 higher alcohols, four esters and four acids. This study revealed the relationships amongst the indigenous yeasts, SSF, and the distinctive flavour profiles of Chinese strong-flavoured liquor. Background: The conversion of atrial fibrillation (AF) to sinus rhythm is associated with transient dysfunction of the left atrium (LA). This study aimed to investigate the time course of LA function and inflammation after radiofrequency (RF) ablation for paroxysmal AF. Methods: Fifty-three patients with paroxysmal AF undergoing RF ablation were recruited. White blood cells were counted and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), fibrinogen, and D-dimer levels were measured. The objective of this study was to study the functional changes of the left atrium after radiofrequency ablation treatment for atrial fibrillation and the therapeutic effect of atorvastatin. Fifty-eight patients undergoing radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation were randomly divided into non-atorvastatin group and atorvastatin group. Patients in the atorvastatin group were treated with atorvastatin 20 mg p.o. per night in addition to the conventional treatment of atrial fibrillation; patients in the non-atorvastatin group received conventional treatment of atrial fibrillation only. Echocardiography was performed before radiofrequency ablation operation and 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks after operation. Two-dimensional ultrasound speckle tracking imaging system was used to measure the structural indexes of the left atrium. Results indicated that there was no significant change for indexes representing the structural status of the left atrium within a month after radiofrequency ablation (P > 0.05); however, there were significant changes for indexes representing the functional status of the left atrium. There were also significant changes in indexes reflecting left atrial strain status: the S and SRs of atorvastatin group were higher than those of non-atorvastatin group (P < 0.05). In summary, atorvastatin could improve left atrial function and shorten the duration of atrial stunning after radiofrequency ablation of atrial fibrillation.

Background The identification of new risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD) is increasingly sought in an effort to tackle this threatening disease. β2-microglobulin (B2M) is reported to associate with peripheral arterial disease and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Background Gene variants contribute to variability in individual responsiveness to clopidogrel and influence cardiovascular outcomes in Caucasian patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, limited data is available in Asian populations. Methods We resequenced 14 genes in metabolizing and activity pathway of clopidogrel in 138 patients with ACS and prospectively assessed the modulating effects of 13 variants possibly related to clopidogrel efficacy on one-year cardiovascular event occurrence in 5820 ACS patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In addition, platelet aggregation rate was measured in 1084 participants and plasma levels of active metabolite were determined in 15 patients to test whether increasing clopidogrel maintenance doses increases active metabolite exposure. Results No significant associations were found between any of the tested variants and risk of cardiovascular events ( P >0.05), although CYP2C19*2 carriers had slightly higher on-treatment platelet aggregation rate and lower active metabolite exposure compared with that of non-carriers (Median [IQR] 51.49 [35.43–66.75] vs. 49.05 [32.36–63.38], P =0.012) (means±SD AUC, 22.84±5.00 vs. 35.05±12.34, P =0.008). Switching from 75mg daily clopidogrel to 150mg daily fully overcomes low exposure to clopidogrel active metabolite in CYP2C19*2 carriers (means±SD AUC, 32.35±8.65 vs. 35.05±12.34, P =0.314). Conclusion Different from Caucasian populations, genetic variants have no significant influence on clinical outcomes and have much milder effects on inhibition of platelet and active clopidogrel metabolite levels in Chinese patients with ACS after PCI, an effect which could be overcome with a dose escalation to 150mg daily.

Background Patients with arsenic-induced Bowen’s disease (As-BD) are at risk of developing invasive cancers in the skin, lung, and urinary bladder. However, a longitudinal follow-up study on the association between As-BD and invasive cancers is still lacking. Objectives This study aims to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of this malignant progression in the skin and internal organs. Methods This is a biopsy-based follow-up study. We tested the DNA histograms, Cyclin D1 (CCND1) protein expression and CCND1 promoter DNA methylation in 40 pathologically confirmed specimens from As-BD patients to correlate with individual’s invasive cancer occurrence in the 5-year follow-up. Results Flow cytometric DNA histogram analysis of skin specimens showed aneuploid (n = 15), G2/M arrest (n = 22), and normal (n = 3) DNA histograms. No patients with normal DNA histograms developed invasive cancers, whereas 13 developed invasive cancers in the aneuploid group and 2 developed invasive cancers in the G2/M arrest group. The aneuploid group showed a high risk of invasive cancer development. In all assessed aneuploid specimens, the CCND1 promoter hypomethylation was observed. Statistically, percentage of un-methylation more than 55.85% among 17 detected CpG sites showed extremely high predictive power in the occurrence of invasive arsenical cancers. Furthermore, the un-methylation at -56 and -54 bp CpG sites was statistically significantly associated with invasive arsenical cancer development (p = 1.29 × 10−5). Conclusions As-BD lesions showing an aneuploid DNA histogram had a high risk of invasive cancer development. Un-methyaltion at -56 and -54 bp CpG in the CCND1 promoter serves as a predictor for invasive progression in As-BD patients.

Background The sensitivity of rapid influenza diagnostic test (RIDT) of children with influenza-like illness (ILI) remains low. Objective We compare the parameters between pandemic A(H1N1) 2009 influenza with negative RIDT and ILI not H1N1 for improving the low sensitivity of RIDT for children with ILI. Methods In a cohort of consecutive laboratory-confirmed H1N1 influenza, we identified 150 H1N1 children with positive RIDT, 152 H1N1 children with negative RIDT, and 75 children with ILI not H1N1. Viral load in throat, complete blood count (CBC), and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels between H1N1 children with negative RIDT and children with ILI not H1N1 were assessed. Results The diagnostic sensitivity of the RIDT was 45·5%. An analysis of CBC and CRP levels indicated that H1N1 children with negative RIDT had lower total leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and basophil counts, and serum CRP levels (P

TSL-1 is a fraction of the aqueous extract from the tender leaf ofToona sinensis Roem, a nutritious vegetable. The pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus is a recently described, rapidly contagious respiratory pathogen which can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and poses a major public health threat. In this study, we found that TSL-1 inhibited viral yields on MDCK plaque formation by pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus on infected A549 cells with high selectivity index. Meanwhile, TSL-1 also suppressed viral genome loads in infected A549 cells, quantified by qRT-PCR. This study further demonstrated that TSL-1 inhibited pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus activity through preventing attachment of A549 cells but not penetration. TSL-1 inhibited viral attachment through significant downregulation of adhesion molecules and chemokines (VCAM-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin, IL-8, and fractalkine) compared to Amantadine. Our results suggest that TSL-1 may be used as an alternative treatment and prophylaxis against pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus.

This study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a modified single-armed suture technique for microsurgical vasoepididymostomy (VE) in patients with epididymal obstructive azoospermia. From September 2011 to December 2011, microsurgical two-suture longitudinal intussusception VEs were performed using our modified single-armed suture technique in 17 men with epididymal obstructive azoospermia at our hospital. Two of these patients underwent repeated VEs after previous failed VEs, and one patient underwent unilateral VE because of an occlusion of the left abdominal vas deferens. The presence of sperm in the semen sample at 3 months postoperation was used as the preliminary endpoint of this study. Each patient provided at least one semen sample at the 3-month time point, and the patency was assessed by the reappearance of sperm (10(4) ml(-1)) in the semen. The mean operative time for the modified technique was 219 min. Patency was noted in 10 men (58.8%), including one patient who underwent repeated VE. The patient who underwent unilateral anastomosis manifested no sperm postoperatively in his semen. Sperm granulomas were not detected in this cohort. The results of this study demonstrate that our modified technique for microsurgical longitudinal intussusception VE is effective. We believe that it is a practical alternative that may reduce operation time and obviate the suture crossing.

Digital loop-mediated amplification (LAMP) is an isothermal, quantitative DNA amplification approach which has high sensitivity and specificity and could be used to analyze extremely low amount of DNA within a short period of time. In this study, an integrated self-driven microfluidic chip was proposed herein for performing a digital LAMP process for vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) diagnosis. The entire bacterial diagnosis could be automatically performed by capillary forces through the new polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface treatment without using external pumps. Moreover, digitized droplets could be separated from each other by normally-close valves such that it could be quantitated. The contact angle of the treated PDMS surface was measured to be only 24°, which was the lowest value in literatures. This is the first time that a rapid (within 1 hour), simple, and hydrophilic PDMS surface modification method has been reported, which could be used in self-driven microfluidic devices for digital LAMP. This device may become a promising tool for clinical diagnosis and point-of-care applications.

Aiming at the problem of features instability in specific emitter identification, this paper presents a based on one-class classifier feature preprocessing algorithm to detect the unstable features. The algorithm takes advantage of one-class classifier of property that can describe the distribution of given data sets. Its basic steps include: Firstly, we divide the feature time series into N segments with given length; secondly selecting one segment trains one-class classifier acquiring classification surface, and then remaining N-1 segments test the classifier and record the test accurate rates for every segments; finally we compare the minimize of test results with the setting threshold. If the minimize of test rate is lower than threshold in the test segments, we consider the feature is unstable. For a given set of data, experimental results show that the method is effective on determining the feature of stability.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of gallium-67 scan (GS) and F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET scan in lymphoma staging and recurrence detection by comparing the 2 imaging studies in the same patient. Materials and methods A total of 42 patients from the period between July 2002 and May 2006 were included in this study. Of the 42 patients, 6 had Hodgkin disease and 36 had non-Hodgkin lymphomas. All of them underwent one or more FDG PET scans and also underwent corresponding GS performed within 7 days of FDG PET, for staging or detection of lymphoma recurrence. Among the non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases, 18 were diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, 10 were follicular center cell lymphoma, and 8 were of other types. Of the total 46 pairs of imaging performed in these 42 patients, 27 were for staging, and 19 for restaging after recurrence. Results In all these studies, FDG PET detected 230 lesion sites, whereas GS detected 85 lesion sites. All of the lesions detected by GS were noted on FDG PET, whereas GS detected only 37.0% of the lesions detected by FDG PET. Among the 27 studies for staging, FDG PET detected 120 lesions, whereas GS detected 68 lesions (56.7%). In the 19 images taken for relapse, FDG PET detected 110 lesions, whereas GS detected only 17 (15.5%). Conclusions FDG PET is superior to GS in staging and detecting all types of lymphoma. The difference is notably more significant in recurrence detection.

This study examined the role of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and cystatin C in ischemic stroke complicating atrial fibrillation (AF) and the relationship of systemic inflammation with this disease in order to identify AF patients who are at high risk of stroke and need optimal anticoagulant therapy. A total of 103 AF patients, simple (n=75) or complicated by ischemic stroke (n=28), and 112 control subjects were recruited. IL-6 level was detected by using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Cystatin C and hsCRP levels were measured by means of a particle-enhanced immunonephelometric assay. The results showed that the AF patients had higher levels of hsCRP (P=0.004), IL-6 (P=0.000), and cystatin C (P=0.000) than control subjects. Plasma hsCRP level was increased in the AF patients with ischemic stroke as compared to the patients with simple AF (P=0.036). The AF patients who had the level of hsCRP exceeding 3.83 mg/L were at a higher risk than those with hsCRP level lower than 3.83 mg/L (P=0.030). After adjusting for other factors, cystatin C remained positively associated with IL-6 (r=0.613) and hsCRP (r=0.488). It was concluded that hsCRP is positively correlated with ischemic stroke complicating AF and may be a risk factor independent of other risk factors for AF. Elevated cystatin C level is also indicative of the increased risk of AF.

Primary pulmonary pleomorphic adenoma is a rare tumor. Although it is a tumor with benign histology, it has potential to recur or metastasize. Most patients with pulmonary pleomorphic adenomas have symptoms and signs of chronic bronchial obstruction. Some are asymptomatic, presenting as an incidental finding on chest X-ray. Treatment of choice is complete surgical removal. We report our experience of FDG-PET in a patient with primary pleomorphic adenoma. The tumor was represented with high FDG uptake with maximal standard uptake value (SUVmax) of 8.4. It could not be differentiated from a malignant lesion by FDG-PET. This patient received surgical removal of the tumor. No recurrent or metastatic disease noted 26 months following the surgery.

Background: Genome-wide-association studies have identified the TMPRSS6 polymorphism rs855791 has the strongest association with red blood cell indices or iron parameters in general population. Whether this genetic variant influences the susceptibility of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in women with menstruation has not been well studied. Methods: In this case-control study, we enrolled 67 women with IDA and 107 healthy volunteers, and analyzed their complete blood counts, rs855791 genotypes, and menstrual amounts. Menstrual blood loss was evaluated with a pictorial blood-loss assessment chart. Results: There were significantly fewer rs855791 C homozygotes in the IDA group than in the healthy group (11.9% vs. 25.2%, p = 0.03). The odds ratio (OR) of C homozygotes having IDA versus non-CC subjects having IDA was 0.4 (95% CI, 0.17 - 0.95, p = 0.04). When the analysis was confined to study subjects with menorrhagia, this difference became more prominent (9.6% vs. 28.6%, p = 0.01; OR, 0.27, 95% CI, 0.09 - 0.77, p = 0.01). For women with non-CC genotypes, there was an inverse correlation between hemoglobin levels and menstrual loss (p < 0.001); however, this association was not found for those with genotypes CC (p = 0.15). Conclusions: Our study suggests homozygosity for TMPRSS6 rs855791 C genotype has a protective role against IDA in women at reproductive age, especially in those with menorrhagia.
