Motivated by new wireless applications that rely on ultra-reliable low latency communications, while supporting the transmission of short packets, we introduce a method that reduces the wireless resources consumption for real-time control of physical systems. Leveraging the tight interaction between control and communication systems, we make use of packetized predictive control along with incremental redundancy hybrid automatic repeat request, aiming at minimizing the transmission energy consumption of a packet by optimizing the transmit power and prediction length of the controller. Our results show that the proposed strategy can save up to 45% of wireless resources when compared to a state-of-the-art method.

Introduction: Mutations in the breakpoint cluster region-Abelson murine leukemia 1 gene are the leading cause of resistance to treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors in chronic myeloid leukemia patients. Mutations have been detected throughout the extension of the kinase domain of this gene and it is important to investigate their positions because there may be a difference in clinical relevance. Objective: To evaluate mutations in the transcripts of the BCR-ABL1 gene in Brazilian patients with chronic myeloid leukemia under tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment in the Hospital de Clínicas of the Universidade Federal do Paraná. Methods: This retrospective observational cross-sectional study analyzed mutation data of BCR-ABL1 gene transcripts. Three hundred and thirty peripheral blood samples from 193 patients were evaluated with the search for mutations being achieved by Sanger sequencing. Results: Sixteen mutation types were identified in 48/193 (24.87%) patients with T315I (20.83%) being the most common. Furthermore, four polymorphisms (T240T, K247R, E275E and Y275Y) were identified. The highest incidence of mutations (19/53: 35.85%) occurred in the P-loop of the tyrosine kinase domain, whereas no mutation was found in the A-loop. In 43/48 (89.58%) patients only one mutation was found and more than one mutation was found in 5/48 (10.42%). The simultaneous presence of two mutations (E189G/V299L and E255K/T315I) was observed in 2/5 patients while the different mutations were seen in sequential samples of the other three patients (Y253Y/T315I, T315I/E255K and E255K/T315I). Conclusions: This molecular characterization contributed to the identification of the resistance profile to tyrosine kinase inhibitors in Brazilian patients, thus enabling the use of adequate therapeutic strategies in a timely manner. Objective: Evaluate the effects of non-thermal plasma therapy (NTP) for the treatment of diabetic foot injuries in two patients, considering the evolution of the steps of the healing process, pain sensitivity, and quality of life. Methodology: Lesions in the lower limbs of two patients with Diabetes mellitus (DM) with similar anatomical location and dimensions were treated, one patient with controlled DM and the other classified as uncontrolled DM. The application of NTP was performed for 10 minutes, 3 times a week in direct contact with the lesions. The same protocol was applied in both clinical cases to allow a reliable evaluation of the healing process. Results and Discussion: The lesions presented progressive regression until their complete regeneration (100%), without the development of infections during treatment. Conclusion: The results obtained in the two clinical cases allow us to attest that the NTP application in the treatment of diabetic foot injuries resulting from DM constituted an important therapeutic tool for the evolution of the healing process of these injuries, with a significant reduction in the lesion area in a short period of time. The definition of the ideal treatment protocol depends on the expansion of the number of studies and the increase of the studied population. Objetivo: Evaluar los efectos de la terapia con Plasma No Térmico (PNT) para el tratamiento de las lesiones del pie diabético en dos pacientes, considerando la evolución de los pasos del proceso de reparación, la sensibilidad al dolor y la calidad de vida. Metodología: Se trataron lesiones en miembros inferiores de dos pacientes con DM, de similar localización anatómica y dimensiones, un paciente con DM controlada y el otro clasificado como Diabetes mellitus (DM) no controlada. La aplicación del PNT se realizó durante 10 minutos, 3 veces por semana, en contacto directo con las lesiones. Se aplicó el mismo protocolo en ambos casos clínicos para permitir una valoración fiable del proceso de cicatrización. Resultados y Discusión: Las lesiones presentaron regresión progresiva hasta la regeneración completa (100%), sin desarrollar infecciones durante el tratamiento. Conclusión: Los resultados obtenidos en los dos casos clínicos permiten atestiguar que la aplicación de la PNT en el tratamiento de las lesiones del pie diabético derivadas de la DM constituyó una importante herramienta terapéutica para la evolución del proceso de curación de estas lesiones, con una importante reducción del área de la lesión en un corto período de tiempo. La definición del protocolo de tratamiento ideal depende de la expansión del número de estudios y el aumento de la población estudiada. Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos da terapia com plasma não térmico (PNT) para tratamento de lesões em pé diabético de dois pacientes, considerando a evolução das etapas do processo de reparo, sensibilidade à dor e qualidade de vida. Metodologia: Foram tratadas as lesões em membros inferiores de dois pacientes com Diabetes mellitus (DM), com localização anatômica e dimensões semelhantes, sendo um paciente portador de DM controlado e outro classificado como DM não controlado. A aplicação do PNT foi realizada por 10 minutos, 3 vezes por semana em contato direto com as lesões. O mesmo protocolo foi aplicado em ambos os casos clínicos para permitir avaliação fidedigna do processo de cicatrização. Resultados e Discussão: As lesões apresentaram regressão progressiva até sua regeneração completa (100%), sem desenvolvimento de infecções durante o tratamento. Conclusão: Os resultados obtidos nos dois casos clínicos permitem atestar que a aplicação de PNT no tratamento de lesões em pé diabético decorrentes do DM constituiu-se em importante ferramenta terapêutica para evolução do processo de cicatrização desses agravos, com expressiva redução da área da lesão em curto intervalo de tempo. A definição do protocolo de tratamento ideal depende da expansão do número de estudos e aumento da população estudada.

Objetivo: Descrever o perfil epidemiológico dos pacientes com câncer bucal tratados em um hospital de referência regional para tratamento de câncer no Paraná. Métodos: Este estudo retrospectivo, com delineamento transversal, envolveu uma população de 274 pessoas com câncer bucal, tratados no período de janeiro de 2007 a janeiro de 2014. Os dados foram coletados a partir dos prontuários hospitalares e complementados com as fichas de admissão hospitalar. Resultados: Identificou-se que 75,2% eram indivíduos do gênero masculino, e 81,5% de cor/raça branca. A média de idade foi 59 anos, variando de 19 a 88 anos, com maior acometimento para a faixa etária com mais 60 anos com 48,2% dos casos. As pessoas mais acometidas pela doença exerciam atividades relacionadas à agricultura (21,9%) e atividades relacionadas à produção de bens e serviços industriais (20,0%). O tipo histológico mais prevalente foi o carcinoma espinocelular em 90,2% casos, seguido pelo carcinoma basocelular (3,3%) e adenocarcinoma (2,9%). Conclusões: Os indivíduos mais acometidos foram homens, de raça branca, com idade média de 59 anos, com profissão ligada a agricultura, com lesões localizadas principalmente em lábio.

Fusarium wilt of cotton caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. vasinfectum Atk. Sny & Hans is one of the major diseases of cotton in Tanzania. Resistant varieties provide useful tools for management of this disease. Varieties developed at Lake Zone Agricultural Research and Development Institute with previous records of resistance are currently susceptible in areas with high level of inoculums warranting the need to search for additional sources of resistance. Further, cotton varieties of Brazil indicate some level of resistance against F. oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum that can be exploited in breeding programmes. In present study, four varieties from Brazil and three from Tanzanian were screened under greenhouse conditions for resistance to Fusarium wilt. A population of 40 plants per variety was inoculated with a crude inoculum of F. oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum by root - dip method. Randomized complete block design was used with four replications. Resistance was evaluated on basis of foliar symptoms (disease severity index) and plant survival percentage. Further, all plants showing wilting symptoms were examined for vascular discoloration. Among various tested varieties, two cultivars from Brazil (Ipê and Aroeira) had relatively lower disease severity index and higher plant survival, these results suggesting their potential candidature for use in br eeding programmes for Fusarium wilt resistance. On the other hand, two local cultivars (UK91 and UK08) presented the highest disease severity index and lowest plant survival.

Background Imatinib mesylate has revolutionized the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia leading to significant reductions of BCR-ABL1 transcript levels in peripheral blood. Objective To evaluate the response to imatinib mesylate treatment (400 mg/day) in Brazilian patients in the chronic phase of chronic myeloid leukemia monitored by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction. Methods Between October 2002 and October 2010, 3169 peripheral blood samples were collected from 1403 patients from 3 to 5 months, 6 to 11 months, 12 to 17 months, 18 to 23 months and ≥24 months after beginning imatinib treatment. Eighty-two patients had samples available and analyzed for all time intervals. BCR-ABL1 quantification was performed by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction using the ABL1 gene as the control. Results of the BCR-ABL1 ratio as a percentage were reported by the international scale (IS) using the laboratory conversion factor (0.51). Results In the first interval, 80.8% of patients achieved the optimal response (BCR-ABL1IS ≤ 10%). In the second period, 69.1% achieved optimal response (BCR-ABL1IS ≤ 1%) and, between 12 and 17 months, 47.3% achieved major molecular response (BCR-ABL1IS ≤ 0.1%). Conclusions The results of this retrospective study show that the response to imatinib treatment (400 mg/day) of Brazilian patients in the chronic phase of chronic myeloid leukemia is within the expected profile when compared to patients reported in international prospective randomized studies.

The objective of this study was to analyze the diversity and discrimination of high-performance Brazilian rice cultivars using microsatellite markers. Twenty-nine rice cultivars belonging to EMBRAPA Arroz e Feijão germplasm bank in Brazil were genotyped by 24 SSR markers to establish their structure and genetic discrimination. It was demonstrated that the analyzed germplasm of rice presents an expressive and significant genetic diversity with low heterogeneity among the cultivars. All 29 cultivars were differentiated genetically, and were organized into two groups related to their upland and irrigated cultivation systems. These groups showed a high genetic differentiation, with greater diversity within the group that includes the cultivars for irrigated system. The genotyping data of these cultivars, with the morphological e phenotypical data, are valuable information to be used by rice breeding programs to develop new improved cultivars. Background: Patients with minor acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack are at high risk for subsequent stroke, and more potent antiplatelet therapy in the acute setting is needed. However, the potential benefit of more intense antiplatelet therapy must be assessed in relation to the risk for major bleeding. The SOCRATES trial (Acute Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack Treated With Aspirin or Ticagrelor and Patient Outcomes) was the first trial with ticagrelor in patients with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack in which the efficacy and safety of ticagrelor were compared with those of aspirin. The main safety objective was assessment of PLATO (Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes)–defined major bleeds on treatment, with special focus on intracranial hemorrhage (ICrH). Methods: An independent adjudication committee blinded to study treatment classified bleeds according to the PLATO, TIMI (Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction), and GUSTO (Global Use of Strategies to Open Occluded Coronary Arteries) definitions. The definitions of ICrH and major bleeding excluded cerebral microbleeds and asymptomatic hemorrhagic transformations of cerebral infarctions so that the definitions better discriminated important events in the acute stroke population. Results: A total of 13 130 of 13 199 randomized patients received at least 1 dose of study drug and were included in the safety analysis set. PLATO major bleeds occurred in 31 patients (0.5%) on ticagrelor and 38 patients (0.6%) on aspirin (hazard ratio, 0.83; 95% confidence interval, 0.52–1.34). The most common locations of major bleeds were intracranial and gastrointestinal. ICrH was reported in 12 patients (0.2%) on ticagrelor and 18 patients (0.3%) on aspirin. Thirteen of all 30 ICrHs (4 on ticagrelor and 9 on aspirin) were hemorrhagic strokes, and 4 (2 in each group) were symptomatic hemorrhagic transformations of brain infarctions. The ICrHs were spontaneous in 6 and 13, traumatic in 3 and 3, and procedural in 3 and 2 patients on ticagrelor and aspirin, respectively. In total, 9 fatal bleeds occurred on ticagrelor and 4 on aspirin. The composite of ICrH or fatal bleeding included 15 patients on ticagrelor and 18 on aspirin. Independently of bleeding classification, PLATO, TIMI, or GUSTO, the relative difference between treatments for major/severe bleeds was similar. Nonmajor bleeds were more common on ticagrelor. Conclusions: Antiplatelet therapy with ticagrelor in patients with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack showed a bleeding profile similar to that of aspirin for major bleeds. Blue disease of cotton is an economically important disease of the crop first described from the Central African Republic and spread to other countries. Brazil and other South American countries record crop losses of up to 80% from infection but no cases of the disease have been reported in Tanzania. Resistance to the disease has been found in African germplasm and transferred to crop cultivars worldwide. Molecular markers linked to blue disease resistance genes have been identified presenting useful tools to identify resistant germplasm. All plants of three Tanzanian cotton cultivars ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) UK91, UK08 and UKM08 showed resistance alleles for both the simple sequence repeat (SSR) (DC20027-202 bp) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) (NG0204310-C) markers but some plants of the Brazilian cultivars ( G. hirsutum L .); Ipe, Cedro, Aroeira and Araca lacked resistance alleles. The findings suggest the need for caution to be taken during introduction of exotic germplasm and recognize the value of resistance trait to susceptible Brazilian germplasm when breeding for blue disease resistance. The prevalence of childhood obesity has been increasing worldwide and lifestyle changes are the most important strategies in managing this prevalence. This study aimed to describe the intervention effects of nutrition and physical activities offered as an after school short-term on outcomes of healthy nutrition practices, fitness and lowering fatness. This quasi-experimental study was conducted with a convenience sample of 59 caucasian children, aged 7.7 ± 1.4 years old (52.5% girls) registered on a private school of a middle-size town located in Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The school-based 12-week intervention consisted of 2 weekly 60 minutes section, during 3 months, including a nutritional education and a physical activity curriculum. Anthropometric data was measured for all children at baseline and after 12 weeks. All parents were contacted and requested to complete questionnaire about child’s eating behavior at baseline and after the 12-week program. After the intervention, children showed an increasing in the intake of fruits (64.3%), vegetables (61.9%), and water (52.0%). Overall, 83.3% of the children changed eating behavior according to the questionnaire responded by the parents. Waist circumference was significantly lower and abdominal strength improved after participating in the intervention program. Mean height and weight were significantly higher in boys and girls after a 12-week intervention. Although mean values of BMI remained the same after the intervention it was observed a decreasing in the prevalence of obesity among the children. Thus our study showed that a school-based intervention program focused on nutritional education and physical activity program promoted waist circumference reduction and decreased obesity without affecting the height growth along with improved fitness and healthy eating behavior. This intervention program would be feasible and replicable in others schools around the country.

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic diversity of cotton mocó planted in Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte using microsatellite markers, since mocó landraces are a valuable source of genetic diversity. A set of 38 accessions - 21 plants from Rio Grande do Norte and 17 from Paraiba - was analyzed using 24 pairs of cotton microsatellite primers, which amplified 20 polymorphic loci. The average inbreeding was 0.432, and was slightly higher in individuals from Paraíba than from Rio Grande do Norte. Genetic diversity (Nei´s unbiased estimator) between individuals from each state's populations had similar values (HT = 0.327 and 0.302 in Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte, respectively), indicating that comparable variability has been maintained. Moreover, the proportion of diversity between populations was extremely low (DST = 0.007), but expressive between mesoregions (DST = 0.069). These data led us to conclude that the genetic similarities between populations are high.

Whole Blood Lead Level (BLL) is the main marker used to verify lead contamination. The present study explores how BLL is associated with lead concentrations in serum, saliva and house dust. Samples were collected twice from Santo Amaro, BA, Brazil, a region that was contaminated by a lead smelter in the past; a time interval of 12 months was allowed between the two collections. It is noteworthy that the following measures have recently been taken to diminish exposure of the population to lead: streets have been paved with asphalt, and educational campaigns have been launched to reduce exposure to contaminated dust. How to measure biodiversity? One of the possibilities is to use DNA. The mention of DNA can hint evolution, but this question is much more complicated and beyond the proposition of a biodiversity measure. The reasons stated for use DNA instead of other possible molecules could be that it is stable and responsible for the transmission of traits to future generations. But another reason is simple that it is suitable for measures. First, due to universality among all living things. Second, because it is a big molecule, constituted by variations of just four bases, making it easy to make a great number of sequence comparisons and used it on biodiversity measures. When individuals to be compared are similar, a greater number of comparisons have to be made to obtain a quantification of the differences among them. Conservation biology is not concerned only with the extinction of species, but also with diversity within species or subspecies, where accurate measures of diversity may be required. A third reason is that a good amount of methodologies is already developed to study its nature. DNA markers when used to study biodiversity are frequently designed for a great number of comparisons of similarities or differences among individuals, groups of individuals, or populations. DNA is the code for protein synthesis, but in most of the studies DNA markers are considered exclusively for comparison, which may not to be linked or recognized to be linked with any trait or adaptability of the individual. There are lots of kinds of markers, and one important thought to have in mind is that there is not a best one among them, but the choice should consider the species to be studied and the objective of the diversity analysis.

Forty-three patients were randomized to weekly classes of singing practice, or handcraft work. They performed spirometry and completed maximal respiratory pressure measurements, evaluations of dyspnea, and the Saint George’s Respiratory Questionnaire, before and after 24 training classes. A functional evaluation, immediately after 10 minutes of singing practice, was also performed at the end of the study. Fifteen subjects completed the study in each group. In comparison to controls the singing group exhibited transitory elevations on the dyspnea Borg scale (p = 0.02), and inspiratory capacity (p = 0.01), and decreases of expiratory reserve volume (p = 0.03), just after a short session of singing. There was a significant difference on changes of maximal expiratory pressures in the comparison between groups at the end of training. While the control group showed deterioration of maximal expiratory pressure, the singing group exhibited a small improvement (p = 0.05). Both groups showed significant improvements of QoL in within group comparisons. We have concluded that singing classes are a well tolerated activity for selected subjects with COPD. Regular practice of singing may improve QoL, and preserve the maximal expiratory pressure of these patients.Keywords: COPD; pulmonary function tests; breathing exercises

INTRODUÇÃO: A doença diarréica aguda é ainda importante causa de morbidade no mundo. Sua elevada incidência e a aceitação de sua ocorrência como fato "normal" impõem desafios para seu registro e implantação de seus sistemas de vigilância. OBJETIVOS: Conhecer as características epidemiológicas da diarréia aguda e avaliar a capacidade de detecção de surtos pelo Programa de Monitorização da Doença Diarréica Aguda, no município de Avaré. MÉTODOS: De 27 de fevereiro a 16 de julho 2005, realizou-se estudo prospectivo da diarréia em unidade sentinela do programa. Os surtos identificados foram investigados por estudos descritivos e analíticos. Amostras de fezes foram coletadas para os casos envolvidos nos surtos. A avaliação dos propósitos do programa embasou-se em indicadores de utilidade, sensibilidade e oportunidade. RESULTADOS: Foram identificados 408 casos (Coeficiente de Incidência = 4,7/1000 habitantes); idade mediana de 7 anos (variação de 1 mês a 89 anos) e 54% do sexo masculino. Dos quatro surtos de diarréia confirmados, dois ocorreram em uma creche e em um orfanato, devido à Giárdia lamblia e Cryptosporidum spp.; um intradomiciliar de origem alimentar, sem identificação do agente, e uma epidemia na comunidade associada ao rotavírus. Dos casos atendidos, 63 (15,5%) pertenciam a surtos, identificando-se mais 56 casos, em um total de 119 casos (Coeficiente de Incidência de Surtos=1,4/1000 habitantes). CONCLUSÕES: O estudo mostrou que o programa responde ao seu principal propósito, respeitando-se as condições de regularidade na informação, análises dos padrões da diarréia e investigação criteriosa. Intensificar treinamentos para aumentar a habilidade das equipes locais nas avaliações e investigações é uma das principais recomendações deste estudo. BACKGROUND: Acute diarrheal illness remains an important cause of morbidity worldwide. Its high incidence and the acceptance of its occurrence as “normal" fact impose challenges for its report and implantation of its surveillance systems. OBJECTIVES: To describe the epidemiologic characteristics of the acute diarrhea and to evaluate the capacity of the Monitoring Program of the Acute Diarrheal Illness for early detection of outbreaks, in the city of Avaré, State of São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: From February 16 to July 28, 2005, was a prospective study of the diarrhea in a sentinel health service of the program. Descriptive and analytical studies were developed to investigate the potential outbreaks identified in this period. Stool samples were collected from the involved cases in the outbreaks. The evaluation of purpose of the program was based on indicators of usefulness, sensitivity and timeliness. RESULTS: A total of 408 cases were identified (incidence rate=4.7/1000 inhabitants). The median age was 7 years (range 1-89 years) and 54% were male. Among four confirmed diarrhea outbreaks, two occurred in a day nursery and orphanage, due to Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidum spp., respectively; one was caused by food in dwelling-house, without identification of the agent, and one caused by rotavirus spread citywide. Of all monitored cases, 63 (15.5%) were involved in outbreaks, linked to more 56 cases, in a total of 119 cases (outbreaks incidence rate=1.4/1000 inhabitants). CONCLUSIONS: The study showed that the program enables prompt detection and investigation of outbreaks, respected the conditions of reliability of the information, evaluation of the acute diarrhea trends and careful inquiry. To intensify training to increase the ability of local professionals to recognize patterns of possible outbreaks and for suitable investigations is one of the major recommendations of this study.

The cultivated Gossypium spp. (cotton) represents the single most important, natural fi ber crop in the world. In addition to its fi ber, the oil and protein portion of the cottonseed also represents signifi cant economic value. To protect the worldwide economic value of cotton fi ber and cotton byproducts, coordinated efforts to collect and maintain cotton genetic resources have increased over the last 100 yr. The classifi ed genetic resources of cotton are extensive and include fi ve tetraploid species in the primary gene pool, 20 diploid species in the secondary gene pool, and 25 diploid species in the tertiary gene pool. This report provides information on the status and contents of eight major cotton germplasm collections present across the world. Based on the fi ndings of this report, a number of classifi ed Gossypium species are not maintained in these collections, and several are underrepresented and vulnerable to extinction. This report presents several critical challenges and opportunities facing international efforts to enhance and preserve the world’s Gossypium genetic resources. Multinational communication and collaboration are essential to protect, secure, and evaluate the global cotton germplasm resources. Without global, collaborative efforts, the rarest and most unique cotton germplasm resources are vulnerable to extinction.
