Considered as an autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an chronic inflammatory disorder that causes inflammation of the joints. This study is performed with the aim to clarify the expression of phospholipase D1 (PLD1) in RA and its specific regulation role of RA as well as the underlying mechanisms. In this study, synovial tissue samples were collected from RA patients, and RA-fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) were subsequently isolated. The expression levels of PLD1 and pathway-related proteins were detected by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting or immunohistochemistry (IHC). Upon shPLD1 treatment, cell viability, proliferation, migration, invasion, and the level of inflammation-related factors were measured by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), Edu, wound healing, Transwell and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Furthermore, C-reactive protein (CRP), rheumatoid factor (RF), arthritis score and synovial tissue lesions were assessed by collecting the blood or tissues from collagen induced arthritis (CIA) model rats. Our results showed that PLD1 level was increased in RA synovial tissues. Cell viability, proliferation, migration, invasion, and the level of inflammatory factors were reduced upon PLD1 knockdown in RA-FLSs. Moreover, p-IκBα/IκBα, β-catenin, p-IKKβ/IKKβ and TCF-4 were inhibited under PLD1 knockdown treatment. PLD1 knockdown alleviated the collagen-induced addition of arthritis score, CRP and RF, as well as the filling of inflammatory cells and proliferation of synovium in CIA model rat. To sum up, knockdown of PLD1 could reduce RA-FLSs metastasis as well as inflammatory response by modulating the activity of NF-κB and Wnt/β-catenin pathways.

Purpose To compare the changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFChT) in myopic children treated with 0.01% atropine, orthokeratology (OK), or their combination in myopic children, and to study the connection between increase in SFChT and axial length (AL) elongation. Methods This is a prospective, randomized, controlled study. A total of 67 children were included; 22 patients were randomly assigned to the SA group (patients with spectacles and 0.01% atropine), 24 patients were randomly assigned to the OK group (OK), and 21 patients were randomly assigned to the OKA group (OK and 0.01% atropine). Comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations were performed at baseline, 1 month, 6 months, and 12 months. Results After 1 month, SFChT increased by 5.41 ± 1.65 μm in the SA group, 17.46 ± 2.79 μm in the OK group, and 20.19 ± 2.18 μm in the OKA group (P = 0.00), whereas AL was not significantly increased. After 12 months, the changes of SFChT were not increased significantly compared with that at 1 month; AL increased by 0.20 ± 0.03 mm in the SA group, 0.28 ± 0.03 mm in the OK group, and 0.14 ± 0.03 mm in the OKA group (P = 0.00). The change in SFChT at 12 month was negatively correlated with the change in AL at 12 months. Conclusion The control of AL elongation was better in SA group than OK group. The increase in SFChT was best in OKA group, followed by OK group, and the changes were significant after only 1 month. In addition, the increase in SFChT may influence AL elongation and myopia progression.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common malignant tumor. DNA damage played a crucial role on tumorigenesis, and abnormal DNA repair pathways affected the occurrence and progress of CRC. In current study, we aimed to construct a DNA repair-related genes (DRG) signature to predict the overall survival (OS) of CRC patients. Differentially expressed DRGs (DE-DRGs) were analyzed using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. The prognostic gene signature was identified by univariate Cox regression and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO)-penalized Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. The predictive ability of the model was evaluated by utilizing Kaplan-Meier curves and Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was performed to explore the underlying biological processes and signaling pathways. Single sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) was implemented to estimate the immune status between the different risk group. A total of 118 DE-DRGs were identified between 42 normal samples and 488 CRC samples in TCGA cohort, and 36 DE-DRGs were associated with OS in the univariate Cox regression. Purpose To investigate the clinical efficacy of 0.01% atropine in slowing the progression of myopia in children and to evaluate the influence of 0.01% atropine on secretion of basal tear and stability of tear film. Methods Eighty children aged 5–14 years with myopia, 40 were randomly divided into two groups consisting of those who received spectacles in addition to 0.01% atropine (SA group) and those who received only spectacles (S group). The remaining 40 children who were wearing orthokeratology (OK) lenses for 3 months were randomly divided into two groups comprising those who received OK lenses in addition to 0.01% atropine (OKA group) and those who received only OK lenses (OK group). Comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations, including slit-lamp examination, visual acuity testing, autorefraction, intraocular pressure, axial length (AL), corneal topography, Schirmer’s test, and tear film break-up time (TBuT), were performed before treatment and after every 3 months treatment. Results During the follow-up visits, evidently better spherical equivalent (SE) control over 3, 6 and 12 months was observed in the SA and OKA groups compared with the S and OK groups. The AL over 3, 6, and 12 months was evidently inhibited in the SA and OKA groups compared with the S and OK groups. No statistically significant differences in Schirmer’s test and TBuT results were observed between the S and SA groups and between the OK and OKA groups. However, statistically significant differences were found in TBuT results between before treatment and after 3 months treatment in the OK group (P t test) and the OKA group (P t test). Conclusions 0.01% atropine can effectively control myopia progression and axial elongation regardless of combined treatment with spectacles or OK lenses. And 0.01% atropine has no evident effect on Schirmer’s test and TBuT results; however, researchers also found that Schirmer’s test and TBuT results showed a tendency to reduce after treatment with 0.01% atropine.

Tire tread pattern is a crucial parameter to prevent hydroplaning. In this study, numerical modeling was used to investigate tire hydroplaning based on flow–structure interaction. The empirical model of hydroplaning speed published in the literature was used to validate the computational model. Analysis of water flow velocity and turbulent flow energy revealed that lateral grooves of the tire significantly influenced water drainage capacity. Based on the relationship between water flow vector and lateral groove shape, a combination of Kriging surrogate model and simulated annealing algorithm was used to optimize lateral groove design to minimize hydrodynamic lift force. Four geometry parameters of lateral grooves were selected as the design variables. Based on design of experiment principle, 12 simulation cases based on the optimal Latin hypercube design method were used to analyze the influence of design variables on hydrodynamic lift force. The surrogate model was optimized by the simulated annealing algorithm to optimize tire tread pattern. The results indicated that at the same water flow speed, the optimized lateral grooves can reduce hydrodynamic lift force by 14.05% and thus greatly improve safety performance of the tire. This study proves the validity and applicability of using numerical modeling for solving the complex design of tire tread pattern and optimization problem.

The mutational spectrum and prognostic factors of NRAS-mutated (NRASmut) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are largely unknown. We performed next-generation sequencing (NGS) in 1,149 cases of de novo AML and discovered 152 NRASmut AML (13%). Of the 152 NRASmut AML, 89% had at least one companion mutated gene. DNA methylation-related genes confer up to 62% incidence. TET2 had the highest mutation frequency (51%), followed by ASXL1 (17%), NPM1 (14%), CEBPA (13%), DNMT3A (13%), FLT3-ITD (11%), KIT (11%), IDH2 (9%), RUNX1 (8%), U2AF1 (7%) and SF3B1(5%). Multivariate analysis suggested that age ≥ 60 years and mutations in U2AF1 were independent factors related to failure to achieve complete remission after induction therapy. Age ≥ 60 years, non-M3 types and U2AF1 mutations were independent prognostic factors for poor overall survival. Age ≥ 60 years, non-M3 types and higher risk group were independent prognostic factors for poor event-free survival (EFS) while allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation was an independent prognostic factor for good EFS. Our study provided new insights into the mutational spectrum and prognostic factors of NRASmut AML.

To better understand the mechanism of water inrush from fault zones, we investigated a typical inrush case from a coal mine in northern China, identified the water source and the role of fault zones, and analyzed the mechanical characteristics of the rock mass. We established a numerical model of fluid–solid coupling using finite difference methods based ideal elastic–plastic and Biot’s consolidation theories. The model considers softening effects caused by mine dewatering as well as the dynamic influence of mean principal stress and pore water pressure on fault zone permeability. It also simulates fault zone deformation, failure, and seepage under natural and disturbed-state conditions. The mechanism of water inrush through fault zones in a disturbed area was identified by comparing the deformation, failure, and seepage characteristics of fault zones with and without disturbance. The results show that deformation was concentrated at the bottom of the fault zone because of its naturally low strength, which created favorable conditions for water inrush. Softening of the media by mine dewatering also facilitated water inrush. Feedback effects between the fault zone and groundwater-enhanced permeability then led to groundwater bursting into the mine through the fault zone. This study provides an important framework for groundwater hazard prevention in similar mining areas.

Larynx cancer is one of the most common cancers in head and neck. This study aimed to investigate the health burden of larynx cancer at global, regional, and national levels. We collected data of larynx cancer between 1990 and 2017 from the Global Burden of Disease study, including incidence, mortality, and disability adjusted life-years (DALYs). Estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were calculated to assess the changes in age-standardized rate (ASR) of larynx cancer. From 1990 to 2017, LC incident cases increased by 58.67%; however, age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) decreased, with an EAPC of -0.99. Additionally, the incident cases and ASIR of LC were 6-fold higher for male than those for female in 2017. Over the past 28 years, deaths and DALYs of larynx cancer increased by 33.84% and 25%. Contrarily, age-standardized death and DALY rate showed a downward trend. Incidence, death, and DALYs of larynx cancer were always the highest in people aged 50-69 years. Overall, all the ASRs showed downward trends globally. The majority of larynx cancer burden was observed in men, especially among male aged 50-69 years. South and East Asia carried the heaviest burden of larynx cancer worldwide.

Currently, the number of negative lymph nodes (NLNs) has been paid increasing attention and is considered a prognostic indicator in diverse cancers. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the association between number of NLNs and prognosis in esophageal cancer (EC) patients. Our data were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 18 database. The X-tile plot was used to determine the optimal cut-off value of the number of NLNs, and propensity score matching (PSM) was performed according to the results of the X-tile plot. A total of 4777 patients were eligible, and 882 pairs of patients were included after PSM. The result of the X-tile plot revealed an optimal cut-off value of three NLNs. The intelligent transportation system in big data environment is the development trend of future transportation system, which effectively integrates advanced information technology, data communication transmission technology, electronic sensor technology, control technology and computer technology and is applied to overall ground transportation management. Hence, it establishes a real-time, accurate, efficient and comprehensive transportation management system that functions in a wide range and all-round aspects. In order to meet the demands of the intelligent transportation big data processing, this paper puts forward a high performance computing architecture of large-scale transportation video data management based on cloud computing, designs a parallel computing model containing the distributed file system and distributed computing system to solve the problems such as flexible server increase or decrease, load balancing and flexible dynamic storage increase or decrease, computing power and great improvement of storage efficiency. On the basis of this technical architecture, the system adopts BP neural network-related algorithms to extract the static transportation signs in road videos, and uses interframe difference algorithm and Gaussian mixture model (GMM) fusion algorithm to extract the moving targets in road transportation videos. In this way, they are taken as important integral parts and data sources of key frames of intelligent video image recognition to improve the recognition ability of key frames and eventually utilize semantic recognition model based on CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) to complete the intelligent recognition of whole transportation videos. Through network pressure test, computing ability test, recognition ability test and other tests, it has been proved that the intelligent transportation video processing system based on big data environment is successful and the design scheme of this system has strong practical application value.

Epidemiological studies have indicated that blood vitamin D levels are linked to cancer. Here we conducted a dose-response meta-analysis based on published observational studies to evaluate the association of vitamin D intake and blood vitamin D levels with breast cancer susceptibility. PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases were searched up to January 2019. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted to estimate the risk. We identified 70 relevant studies on blood vitamin D levels (50 studies) and vitamin D intake (20 studies), respectively. Linear and nonlinear trend analyses were performed and showed that an increase in blood vitamin D levels by 5 nmol/l was associated with a 6% decrease in breast cancer risk (OR = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.93-0.96). Similar results were obtained for premenopausal (OR = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.93-0.99) and postmenopausal women (OR = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.94-0.98). The pooled OR of breast cancer risk for a 400IU/day increase in vitamin D intake was 0.97 (95% CI = 0.92-1.02). In conclusion, we found that breast cancer risk was inversely related to blood vitamin D levels; however, no significant association was observed in vitamin D intake.

BackgroundStatistical data on the incidence, mortality, and burden of breast cancer and the relevant risk factors are valuable for policy-making. We aimed to estimate breast cancer incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) by country, gender, age group, and social-demographic status between 1990 and 2017.MethodsWe extracted breast cancer data from the 2017 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study from 1990 through 2017 in 195 countries and territories. Data about the number of breast cancer incident cases, deaths, DALYs, and the age-standardized rates were collected. We also estimated the risk factors attributable to breast cancer deaths and DALYs using the comparative risk assessment framework of the GBD study.ResultsIn 2017, the global incidence of breast cancer increased to 1,960,681 cases. The high social-development index (SDI) quintile included the highest number of breast cancer death cases. Between 2007 and 2017, the ASDR of breast cancer declined globally, especially in high SDI and high middle SDI countries. The related DALYs were 17,708,600 in 2017 with high middle SDI quintile as the highest contributor. Of the deaths and DALYs, alcohol use was the greatest contributor in most GBD regions and other contributors included high body mass index (BMI) and high fasting plasma glucose.ConclusionThe increasing global breast cancer burden is mainly observed in lower SDI countries; in higher SDI countries, the breast cancer burden tends to be relieving. Therefore, steps against attributable risk factors should be taken to reduce breast cancer burden in lower SDI countries.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impacts of the 2008 Chinese stimulus program on earnings management. Design/methodology/approach Using a sample period from 2004 to 2011 (per-stimulus period: 2004-2007 and post-stimulus period: 2008-2011), the authors compare the change in earnings management between the firms that received the stimulus funds and those that did not receive the stimulus funds. Findings The authors find that from the pre- to post-stimulus period, the recipient firms experienced a greater increase in downward accrual management and a greater decrease in real management than the non-recipient firms did. This result is primarily driven by the non-state-owned enterprises and firms using non-Big-Four auditors. Originality/value The results suggest that the earnings management level is ultimately determined by the underlying economic and political factors influencing managers’ and auditors’ incentives (Cohen, 2008; Ball et al., 2003). Meanwhile, some mechanisms, such as high-quality audit (Eshleman and Guo, 2014) and state ownership (Wang and Yung, 2011) can also play a role in determining the level of earnings management.

Purpose This paper aims to study the following two questions. Do earnings announcements stimulate investors to participate in online discussions? Does online investment forum participation affect the market’s reaction to earnings news? Design/methodology/approach The authors collect all the online posts, which were related to the internet service companies and posted in a Chinese financial forum, guba.eastmoney.com (Guba), during the period between June 30, 2008 and December 31, 2015. Multiple linear regression analysis is used to test the questions. Findings The study finds that the earnings announcements induce online discussion. In addition, before the earnings announcement, online posting activity does not affect earnings response coefficient but can weaken the positive association between the magnitude of the upcoming earnings surprise and abnormal trading volume. In contrast, after the earnings announcement, online forum participation can facilitate the incorporation of earnings surprise into the price. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature studying the impact of social media on market reaction to earnings news by providing evidence that the price discovery process can be affected by the online investment forum. Several policy implications are also provided.

Background Thymidylate synthase (TYMS) polymorphisms are reported to be related to susceptibility to some cancers. However, no study exists on TYMS polymorphisms and glioma risk. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between two common TYMS gene variants (rs1059394 C>T, rs2847153 G>A) and glioma susceptibility. Methods This case-control study included 605 patients and 1300 cancer-free individuals. Genotyping was performed using Sequenom Mass-ARRAY. We determined odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to estimate the correlations. Results The analysis revealed that rs1059394 TT and CT+TT genotype had significantly low glioma risk (TT to CC: OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.52-0.97, P = 0.03; CT+TT to CC: OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.55-0.99, P = 0.04). However, no significant difference was found between rs2847153 and glioma risk in any genetic model (P﹥0.05). In high-grade gliomas, the GA and GA+AA genotypes of rs2847153 made the majority of genotypes, compared with GG genotype (GA to GG: OR = 2.01, 95% CI = 1.39-2.91, P < 0.001; GA+AA to GG: OR = 1.78, 95% CI =1.25-2.54, P < 0.001). Moreover, online expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) analysis indicated that these two polymorphisms may alter TYMS gene expression in transformed fibroblast cells. Conclusion Our study provides evidence of the effect of TYMS rs1059394 on the susceptibility of glioma. In high-grade gliomas, compared with GG genotype, the GA and GA+AA genotypes of rs2847153 comprise a larger proportion.

Introduction: Asia-Pacific Colorectal Screening (APCS) score has been implemented for colorectal cancer screening in asymptomatic cohort in many regions. However, no study has validated its efficiency in Asian outpatients with mild-self-limited gastrointestinal symptoms yet. The purpose of this study was to validate its efficiency in asymptomatic subjects and outpatients in Ningxia. Methods: The records of 329 asymptomatic participants and 300 outpatients were collected and analyzed from database in the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University from September 2017 to April 2018. These 2 main groups were divided into 3 tiers based on the scores calculated by the category of APCS score. The detection rates of advanced colorectal neoplasia (ACRN) were further compared according to histopathological classifications of tissues acquired during colonoscopy. Results: Among the 329 participants screened in the asymptomatic cohort, 78 subjects (23.7%) were in the low-risk (LR) tier, 187 subjects (56.8%) in the moderate-risk (MR) tier, and 64 subjects (19.5%) in the high-risk (HR) tier. The percentage of ACRN in the LR, MR, and HR groups was 1.3, 8.6, and 20.3%, respectively. In the 300 outpatient cohorts, 78 patients (26%) were in the LR tier, 140 patients (46.7%) in the MR tier, and 82 patients (27.3%) in the HR tier. The detection rates of ACRN in the LR, MR, and HR groups were 0, 10, and 39%, respectively. Conclusion: APCS score is an effective method for ACRN screening in asymptomatic and also the outpatient subjects. Individuals with HR scores should be given priority for colonoscopy.

B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) in adults remains a highly challenging disease. Identifying new prognostic biomarkers is necessary to help select the best therapeutic schedules and to improve prognosis. We performed bioinformatics analyses of transcriptomic data to identify aberrantly-expressed mRNA transcripts in B-ALL and focused on RASD1 (Ras-related dexamethasone-induced 1). To date, no information is available on the prognostic value of RASD1 in B-ALL. Fifty-three consecutive adults with de novo B-ALL were enrolled in this study. Our data suggested that RASD1 was abnormally overexpressed in B-ALL. High RASD1 transcript levels at diagnosis were associated with lower survival probabilities (44% [20%–61%] vs. 79% [60%–97%]; P = 0.037) and were also an independent prognostic factor in adult B-ALL (HR = 4.9 [1.5–15.9]; P = 0.008). Functional in vitro analyses and bioinformatic analyses indicated that RASD1 promoted cell proliferation, cell cycle progression and chemotherapy resistance and inhibited cell apoptosis. These data demonstrated that RASD1 might serve as a novel prognostic biomarker for adult B-ALL and as a potential therapeutic target in adult B-ALL patients.

The association between hyperuricemia or gout and cancer risk has been investigated in various published studies, but their results are conflicting. We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate whether hyperuricemia or gout was associated with the cancer incidence and mortality. Linear and nonlinear trend analyses were conducted to explore the dose-response association between them. The pooled relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to evaluate cancer risk. A total of 24 articles (33 independent studies) were eligible for inclusion. When compared participants with the highest SUA (hyperuricemia) levels and those with the lowest SUA levels, the pooled RR was 1.08 (95% CI, 1.04-1.12), it was significantly associated among males but not among females (males, RR = 1.07; 95% CI, 1.03-1.11; females, RR = 1.06; 95% CI, 0.96-1.17). Hyperuricemia increased total cancer mortality (RR = 1.15; 95% CI, 1.05-1.26), but a significant association was observed in females rather than in males (females: RR = 1.26; 95% CI, 1.09-1.45; males, RR = 1.02; 95% CI, 0.80-1.30). Linear relationships of SUA levels with overall cancer incidence (p for nonlinearity = 0.238) and overall cancer mortality (p for nonlinearity = 0.263) were identified. However, 1 mg/dL increment in SUA levels was weakly significant in overall cancer incidence (RR = 1.01; 95% CI, 1.01-1.01) but not associated with overall cancer mortality (RR = 1.01; 95% CI, 0.99-1.03). Gout was significantly associated with increased cancer incidence (RR = 1.19; 95% CI, 1.12-1.25). In conclusion, Hyperuricemia or gout was associated with higher cancer incidence and mortality. Though a potential linear relationship between them was found, we'd better treat this result with caution.

Background: Currently, there is still some controversy regarding whether early breast cancer patients with a tumor size of ≤5 cm and 1-3 positive lymph nodes should undergo postoperative radiotherapy (PRT). Materials and Methods: We obtained data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 18 database. Then, we conducted propensity score matching (PSM), according to the radiotherapy record. The Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analysis were conducted to explore prognostic factors in breast cancer. Results: A total of 6,777 patients aged 75+ years old were eligible and 2,361 patients were included after PSM. We found PRT could improve patient overall survival (OS) (P = 0.01, hazard ratio [HR] = 0.88, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.80-0.97). Subgroup analysis revealed PRT could improve OS in patients with hormone receptor positive (HR+) (P = 0.001, HR = 0.84, 95% CI, 0.76 - 0.94) or white patients (P =0.004, HR = 0.86, 95% CI, 0.77 - 0.95). Conclusions: PRT may benefit for elderly women with early breast cancer, especially in HR+ patients or white patients. These findings may inform future optimized options whether elderly female patients with early breast cancer should undergo postoperative radiotherapy.

Background Estrogen exposure is a widely known risk factor for BC. And the interaction of estrogen with estrogen receptor (ER) plays an important role in breast cancer development. This case–control study aims to assess the association of genetic polymorphisms in the estrogen receptor genes with breast cancer (BC) susceptibility in Chinese Han women. Methods Four polymorphisms (rs2881766, rs9383951, rs9340799 in ESR1 and rs3020449 in ESR2) were genotyped in 459 patients and 549 healthy controls using the Sequenom MassARRAY method. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated to evaluate the associations. False-positive report probability (FPRP) was utilized to examine the noteworthiness of significant findings. Results We observed that rs2881766 was associated with a decreased BC risk (GG vs. TT: OR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.44–0.91; GG vs. TT/GT: OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.49–0.95), while rs3020449 was associated with an increased risk of BC (CT vs. TT: OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.21–2.06; CT/CC vs. TT: OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.20–1.98; TT/CC vs. CT: OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.15–1.90). The other two polymorphisms have no relation with BC susceptibility. In addition, rs2881766 was correlated with lymph node metastasis and ER expression, and rs3020449 was related to tumor size, histological grade and ER expression. The values of false-positive report probability indicated that the significant associations of BC risk with both rs2881766 and rs3020449 were noteworthy. Conclusions Our study suggests that polymorphisms rs2881766 and rs3020449 in estrogen receptor genes were associated with BC susceptibility as well as clinical features in Chinese women. These findings need further validation in a large population. Background: Lysosome-associated protein transmembrane-4β-35(LAPTM4B-35) has been observed overexpressed in multiple malignant tumors. However, the prognostic value of LAPTM4B-35 remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the prognostic value of LAPTM4B-35 in human cancers. Methods: The relevant publications were obtained by systematically searching the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Wanfang, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for the prognosis value of LAPTM4B-35 for cancer patient. Results: Our result suggest that LAPTM4B-35 overexpression is significantly associated with poor overall survival (OS) (HR = 2.49, 95% CI = 1.87-3.32, p < 0.001), disease-free survival (DFS) (HR = 2.43, 95% CI = 1.35-4.35, p = 0.003), and progression-free survival (PFS) (HR = 4.12, 95% CI = 2.30-7.37, p < 0.001). Moreover, subgroup analysis revealed significant association with poor OS in lung (HR = 2.05, 95% CI = 1.37-3.06, p < 0.001), gastric carcinoma (HR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.01-3.50, p < 0.047) and ovarian cancer (HR = 4.94, 95% CI = 1.44-16.94, p = 0.011). Conclusion: LAPTM4B-35 may be a novel predictive biomarker and a potential target for treatment.

Use of naturally colored cotton (NCC) in the textile industry is limited due to its inferior fiber quality. Recent advances in understanding pigmentation in NCC fiber and the genetic relationship between pigmentation and fiber development may overcome this hindrance and can guide developing high fiber quality and yield NCC.

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to measure the anatomical distance from the cervicovaginal junction to the uterovesical peritoneal reflection (CJ-PR). METHODS A total of 120 hysterectomy patients were selected as study subjects. The uterus was removed, and the CJ-PR distance was immediately measured. For total vaginal hysterectomy, measurement was performed intraoperatively. The cervical length was also measured postoperatively. RESULTS The median (interquartile) CJ-PR distance for all subjects was 3.3 (2.9-3.7) cm. Comparison of premenopausal and postmenopausal women without prolapse revealed median CJ-PR distances of 3.3 (3.0-3.6) cm and 3.0 (2.6-3.4) cm, respectively. The CJ-PR distance was longer in women with prolapse (4.6 [3.7-5.6] cm) than in those without prolapse (3.2 [2.8-3.6] cm). The median cervical lengths were 3.1 (2.7-3.6) cm for postmenopausal patients without prolapse and 4.4 (3.6-5.8) cm for postmenopausal patients with prolapse. CONCLUSIONS Knowledge of the CJ-PR distance may help gynecologists predict how far the uterovesical PR is from the anterior vaginal incision.

Fear memory is a pivotal biological function by which organisms can predict possible danger to avoid or reduce harm. However, dysregulation of fear memory processing may lead to pathological fear or anxiety and produce serious clinical symptoms, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Iron deficiency (ID) is reported to inhibit the initiation of fear memory. In our study, we found that ferroportin1 (FPN1), the only known cellular iron export protein in mammals, and ablation in neurons and astrocytes caused iron deficiency in the cortex and hippocampus. However, little is known about its role in the development of fear memory. Moreover, direct evidence of the role of FPN1, or the related molecular mechanisms of such a role, in balancing brain iron homeostasis, especially in neuronal cells, is lacking. Herein, we deleted Fpn1 in mouse neurons, using Nestin-cre transgenic mice, and explored the impact on neuronal iron recycling and brain iron homeostasis in the cortex and hippocampus. We investigated the response of the mice to contextual fear and found that formation of fear memory was impeded after neuronal FPN1 depletion. We also found that FPN1 ablation in neurons and astrocytes caused an atypical expression of iron metabolism-related proteins in these two regions: decreased expression of DMT1, Ft-H, and Ft-L, and increased TfR1 expression. In addition, the decreased FPN1 in brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMVECs) also shed light on the cause of the decreased iron delivery to the brain through the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Our research highlights the major role played by FPN1 in brain iron homeostasis and identifies a potential target for the treatment of PTSD.

Key Points Question What were the epidemiologic patterns and variation in the trends of thyroid cancer worldwide from 1990 to 2017? Findings In this cross-sectional study covering data on incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years and their temporal trends from 195 countries and 21 regions, increasing trends of thyroid cancer burden were observed, with significant differences by sex, region, country, age, and sociodemographic index. Almost half of the thyroid cancer burden was noted in Southern and Eastern Asia, and a third of patients with thyroid cancer resided in countries with a high sociodemographic index. Meaning This study suggests an increasing global burden of thyroid cancer; the geographic disparities may provide support for cancer health care planning and resource allocation., Importance Thyroid cancer is the most pervasive endocrine cancer worldwide. Studies examining the association between thyroid cancer and country, sex, age, sociodemographic index (SDI), and other factors are lacking. Objective To examine the thyroid cancer burden and variation trends at the global, regional, and national levels using data on sex, age, and SDI. Design, Setting, and Participants In this cross-sectional study, epidemiologic data were gathered using the Global Health Data Exchange query tool, covering persons of all ages with thyroid cancer in 195 countries and 21 regions from January 1, 1990, to December 31, 2017; data analysis was completed on October 1, 2019. All participants met the Global Burden of Disease Study inclusion criteria. Main Outcomes and Measures Outcomes included incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of thyroid cancer. Measures were stratified by sex, region, country, age, and SDI. The estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) and age-standardized rates were calculated to evaluate the temporal trends. Results Increases of thyroid cancer were noted in incident cases (169%), deaths (87%), and DALYs (75%). Age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) showed an upward trend over time, with an EAPC of 1.59 (95% CI, 1.51-1.67); decreases were noted in EAPCs of age-standardized death rate (−0.15; 95% CI, −0.19 to −0.12) and age-standardized DALY rate (−0.11; 95% CI, −0.15 to −0.08). Almost half (41.73% for incidence, 50.92% for deaths, and 54.39% for DALYs) of the thyroid cancer burden was noted in Southern and Eastern Asia. In addition, females accounted for most of the thyroid cancer burden (70.22% for incidence, 58.39% for deaths, and 58.68% for DALYs) and increased by years in this population, although the ASIR of males with thyroid cancer (EAPC, 2.18; 95% CI, 2.07-2.28) increased faster than that of females (EAPC, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.30-1.46). A third (34%) of patients with thyroid cancer resided in countries with a high SDI, and most patients were aged 50 to 69 years, which was older than the age in other quintiles (high SDI quintile compared with all other quintiles, P, This cross-sectional study examines the worldwide temporal trends of thyroid cancer according to geographic location, sex, age, and socioeconomic index.

Epidemiological studies showing the correlation between folate and the breast cancer risk have revealed inconsistent results. Hence, we conducted a dose-response meta-analysis of observational studies to obtain more reliable conclusions. We searched PubMed and Embase for studies published before April 2019 and identified 39 studies on folate intake and 12 studies on plasma folate level. The combined odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted to estimate the breast cancer risk. Folate intake was inversely correlated with the breast cancer risk when the highest and lowest categories (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.79-0.92) were compared, and the dose-response result showed that folate intake had a linear correlation with the breast cancer risk. Moreover, a higher folate intake correlated with a lower breast cancer risk in premenopausal women (OR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.66-0.97), but not in postmenopausal women (OR = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.83-1.06). However, plasma folate levels were not correlated with the breast cancer risk (OR = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.82-1.17). Folate intake was negatively correlated with the breast cancer risk; however, its practical clinical significance requires further study. Furthermore, additional folate supplements should be considered carefully.

BACKGROUND: Opioid-based postoperative analgesia provides adequate analgesia with much adverse effects and immunosuppression. Dexmedetomidine and ketorolac have properties of opioid-sparing, antiinflammation, and immune protection. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the efficacy and safety of whole-course application of dexmedetomidine combined with ketorolac in nonnarcotic postoperative analgesia and its effect on inflammatory response and immune function in thoracoscopic surgery of lung cancer. STUDY DESIGN: Double-blind, randomized control trial. SETTING: The First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University, Dalian, Liaoning, China. METHODS: Sixty patients scheduled for thoracoscopic surgery were enrolled and randomly divided into 2 groups to receive a combination of intraoperative usage of dexmedetomidine and postoperative patient-controlled intravenous analgesia of dexmedetomidine 0.1 µg/kg/h and ketorolac 3 mg/kg (DEX group) or only postoperative patient-controlled intravenous analgesia of sufentanil 1.5 µg/kg and ketorolac 3 mg/kg (SUF group) for 48 hours. Vital signs, postoperative Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score, Ramsay sedation score, patient-controlled analgesia pressing times, consumption of sufentanil and rescue drug, and complications were compared between the 2 groups. The levels of inflammatory factors and immune function were also compared. RESULTS: A significant reduction in median blood pressures and heart rates within 48 hours after surgery and perioperative consumption of sufentanil were observed in the DEX group compared with the SUF group (P < 0.05). No statistically significant difference was found in VAS scores, patient-controlled analgesia pressing times, and rescue drug consumption between the 2 groups (P > 0.05). The incidence of nausea was significantly lower in the DEX group compared with the SUF group (P < 0.05). A significant decrease of interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and increased CD4+ and CD4+/CD8+ were observed in the DEX group compared with the SUF group at 24 and 48 hours after surgery (P < 0.05). There was no difference in the levels of CD8+ and natural killer cells between the 2 groups (P > 0.05). LIMITATIONS: This study was limited by its sample size. CONCLUSIONS: Whole-course application of dexmedetomidine combined with ketorolac in nonnarcotic postoperative analgesia provided adequate and safe postoperative analgesia, reduced sufentanil consumption, analgesia-related complications, alleviated inflammatory response, and immunosuppression compared with sufentanil-based analgesia in thoracoscopic surgery. Previous studies have indicated a correlation between nut intake and cancer risk in humans. This meta-analysis aimed to determine the relationship between nut consumption and the risks of cancer incidence and mortality. The PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched up to August 2019. Relative risks and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using random-effects and fixed-effects models. We included 38 studies on nut consumption and cancer risk and 9 studies on cancer-specific mortality. Compared with no nut intake, nut intake was associated with a lower cancer risk (Relative Risk=0.90; 95% confidence interval, 0.86-0.94). Inverse associations were observed with colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, and lung cancer in subgroup analyses. Tree nut consumption was found to reduce cancer risk (Relative Risk=0.88; 95% confidence interval, 0.79-0.99). Dose-response curves suggested that protective benefits against cancer increased with increased nut intake (P=0.005, P-nonlinearity=0.0414). An inverse correlation with cancer-specific mortality (Odd Ratio=0.90; 95% confidence interval, 0.88-0.92) was observed. In conclusion, nut consumption is inversely associated with the risks of cancer incidence and mortality; a higher intake is significantly associated with a lower cancer risk.

Background: Abernethy malformation is a kind of congenital malformation of portal vein system caused by abnormal portacaval anastomosis. It can be in combination with other congenital malformations. The major therapy of Abernethy malformation is surgery. There has been a limited number of patients since the first patient reported, leading to a limited view towards this kind of disease until now.Results: In August 2018 we treated a patient diagnosed with typeII Abernethy malformation complicated with both congenital polydactyly and enlargement of all cardiac chambers, which is extremely rare and can be a supplementary to the existing cases. Besides, the low white blood cell and platelet, the arrested megakaryocytic maturation and the positive platelet autoantibody in serum may result in misdiagnosis as immune thrombocytopenia, so we analyze the differential points between these two diseases. We treated this patient with silybin orally and advised him to make follow-up visits because of his mild liver function disorder, normal cardiac function and no other malformations or complications complicated. At the latest follow-up, we knew the condition of the patient was generally satisfactory, whether in terms of laboratory test results or his daily life experience.Conclusions: Because of some changes of spleen in form and function secondary to Abernethy malformation, in some cases, this disease has similarities with a part of blood diseases, which we should take into consideration for differential diagnosis, especially when other congenital malformations are found in combination at the same time. This case also suggests that simply conservative treatment with regular follow-up visits can be suitable for certain patients.

Cervical cancer (CC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Limited studies have investigated whether immune-related genes (IRGs) or tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) could be indicators for CC prognoses. The aim of this study was to develop an improved prognostic signature for CC based on IRGs or TIME to predict survival and response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). A prognostic signature was constructed using bioinformatics method and its predictive capability was validated. The mechanisms underlying the signature's predictive capability were explored with CIBERSORT algorithm and mutation analysis. Immunophenoscore (IPS) is validated for ICIs response, and was therefore explored in relation to the signature. A prognostic signature based on 11 IRGs was developed. A multivariate analysis revealed that the 11-IRG signature was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) and progression-free interval in CC patients. In the 11-IRG signature high-risk group, CD8 T cells and resting mast cells, which are found to associate with better OS in our study, were lower; activated mast cells, associated with poorer OS, were higher, compared with the low-risk group. An IPS analysis suggested that the 11-IRG signature low-risk group, which possessed a higher IPS, represented a more immunogenic phenotype that was more inclined to respond to ICIs. In short, an 11-IRG prognostic signature for predicting CC patients' survival and response to ICIs was firmly established. The predictive capability of this model in CC requires further testing with the goal of better prognostic stratification and treatment management.

Several studies have indicated that the use of antihypertensive medications may influence the incidence of bladder/kidney cancer, with some scholars refuting any such association. Hence, a systematic review is needed to verify this linkage. we comprehensively searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for original studies reporting a relationship between antihypertensive medications and risk of bladder/kidney cancer. We included 31 articles comprising 3,352,264 participants. We found a significant association between the risk of kidney cancer and any antihypertensive medications use (relative risk (RR) = 1.45, 95% CI 1.20-1.75), as well as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (RR = 1.24, 95% CI 1.04-1.48), angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB) (RR = 1.29, 95% CI:1.22-1.37), beta-blockers (RR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.11-1.66), calcium-channel blockers (RR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.54-1.78) and diuretics (RR = 1.34, 95% CI 1.19-1.51). In case of bladder cancer, a statistical significance was observed with the use of ARB (RR = 1.07, 95% CI 1.03-1.11) but not with the other antihypertensive medications. There was a linear association between the duration of antihypertensive medications and the risk of kidney cancer (P = 0.061 for a non-linear trend) and the pooled RR for the per year increase in antihypertensive medications duration of use was 1.02 (95% CI: 1.01-1.02). Our results indicate that there is a significant association between each class of antihypertensive medications and the risk of kidney cancer, and this trend presented as a positive linear association. Furthermore, the use of ARB has been linked to the risk of bladder cancer.

Introduction CYP17 is the second most important enzyme in estradiol synthesis. Epidemiological studies have shown the associations between CYP17 polymorphisms and cancer risk. We conducted a case-control study to evaluate the relationship between CYP17 polymorphisms (rs743572 and rs2486758) and breast cancer (BC) risk. Patients and methods This case-control study included 560 BC patients and 583 age-matched healthy controls from Northwest China. Two polymorphisms (rs743572 and rs2486758) of CYP17 were genotyped by using Sequenom MassARRAY. ORs and 95% CIs were used to evaluate the relationship. Results Compared with the wild genotype of rs743572, we found a significantly reduced risk of BC associated with the variant genotypes (heterozygote model: OR=0.69, 95% CI=0.53-0.89; homozygote model: OR=0.68, 95% CI=0.49-0.95; dominant model: OR=0.69, 95% CI=0.54-0.87; overdominant model: OR=0.78, 95% CI=0.62-0.98; allele model: OR=0.79, 95% CI=0.66-0.93). For rs2486758 polymorphism, we did not find any difference in any of the genetic models. Further stratification analysis by clinical characteristics showed rs743572 was associated with estrogen receptor status (heterozygote model: OR=2.13, 95% CI=1.47-3.08; homozygote model: OR=3.29, 95% CI=1.94-5.58; dominant model: OR=2.39, 95% CI=1.69-3.37) and progesterone receptor status (homozygote model: OR=3.17, 95% CI=1.82-5.55), but there was no association between rs2486758 and clinical characteristics of BC. Haplotype analysis showed that Grs743572Crs2486758 haplotype was a protective factor of BC (OR=0.52, 95% CI=0.40-0.67). Survival analysis did not find that CYP17 rs743572 polymorphism was associated with triple-negative BC, either in terms of overall survival or progression-free survival. Conclusion Our results suggest that CYP17 polymorphisms may reduce the susceptibility to BC in Chinese women.

Background The patterns of the incidence and mortality of prostate cancer (PC) have been changing over the years. In addition, the unclear etiology of PC necessitates further studies into the geographic distribution and age composition of patients with PC. This study was aimed at examining the patterns of the epidemiology of PC to help policymakers to allocate the limited resources of the health care system accordingly. Methods Annual case data and age-standardized rates (ASRs) were obtained for the incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of PC according to age from 1990 to 2017 and for 21 regions, including 195 countries and territories. The estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) of ASRs were calculated to evaluate the incidence and mortality trends of PC. Results Worldwide, the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of PC increased from 30.5 cases per 100,000 population in 1990 to 37.9 cases per 100,000 population in 2017 with an EAPC of 0.59 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.49-0.7), whereas the mortality decreased with an EAPC of -0.73 (95% CI, -0.80 to -0.67). The ASIR was positively associated with the sociodemographic index (SDI) in most regions, and the increase in the ASIR was steeper with a higher SDI. The proportion of patients younger than 65 years increased from 23.6% in 1990 to 27.3% in 2017. Conclusions The incidence of PC has been increasing globally, whereas its mortality and DALYs have been decreasing. These trends are particularly significant in developed regions and vary across geographic regions. Adjustments to the medical strategy by governments and medical institutions are required.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important crops worldwide. Its relatives, including phylogenetically related species of rice and paddy weeds with a similar ecological niche, can provide crucial genetic resources (such as resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses and high photosynthetic efficiency) for rice research. Although many rice genomic databases have been constructed, a database providing large-scale curated genomic data from rice relatives and offering specific gene resources is still lacking. Here, we present RiceRelativesGD, a user-friendly genomic database of rice relatives. RiceRelativesGD integrates large-scale genomic resources from 2 cultivated rice and 11 rice relatives, including 208 321 specific genes and 13 643 genes related to photosynthesis and responsive to external stimuli. Diverse bioinformatics tools are embedded in the database, which allow users to search, visualize and download the information of interest. To our knowledge, this is the first genomic database providing a centralized genetic resource of rice relatives. RiceRelativesGD will serve as a significant and comprehensive knowledgebase for the rice community.

Aim To compare three kinds of fluorescent probes for in vitro labeling and in vivo tracking of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in a mouse model of laser-induced retinal injury. Methods EPCs were isolated from human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells and labeled with three different fluorescent probes: 5-(and-6)-carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester (CFSE), 1,1'-dilinoleyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindo-carbocyanine perchlorate linked acetylated low-density lipoprotein (DiI-AcLDL), and green fluorescent protein (GFP). The fluorescent intensity of EPCs was examined by confocal microscopy. Survival rate of labeled EPCs was calculated with trypan blue staining, and their adhesive capability was assessed. A mouse model of retinal injury was induced by laser, and EPCs were injected into the vitreous cavity. Frozen section and fluorescein angiography on flat-mounted retinal samples was employed to track the labeled EPCs in vivo. Results EPCs labeled with CFSE and DiI-AcLDL exhibited an intense green and red fluorescence at the beginning; the fluorescence intensity decreased gradually to 20.23% and 49.99% respectively, after 28d. On the contrary, the florescent intensity of GFP-labeled EPCs increased in a time-dependent manner. All labeled EPCs showed normal morphology and no significant change in survival and adhesive capability. In the mouse model, transplantation of EPCs showed a protective effect against retinal injury. EPCs labeled with CFSE and DiI-AcLDL were successfully tracked in mice during the development of retinal injury and repair; however, GFP-labeled EPCs were not detected in the laser-injured mouse retina. Conclusion The three fluorescent markers used in this study have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. CFSE and DiI-AcLDL are suitable for short-term EPC-labeling, while GFP should be used for long-term labeling. The choice of fluorescent markers should be guided by the purpose of the study.

Previous studies have showed the associations between various BRCA1-interacting protein 1 (BRIP1) polymorphisms and cancer risk. But, these results were inconsistent. This meta-analysis based on 18 studies involving 13,716 cancer patients and 15,590 cancer-free controls is aimed at to evaluate the relationship between the four common SNPs of BRIP1 (rs2048718, rs4988344, rs4986764, and rs6504074) and cancer risk. The results showed a decreased risk of rs2048718 or rs4986764 for cervical cancer rather than breast cancer in the overall population (P < 0.05). However, rs6504074 was associated with gynecologic cancer risk among overall population (P < 0.05). Further stratification analyses by ethnicity indicated that all 4 polymorphisms (rs2048718, rs4988344, rs4986764, and rs6504074) were strongly related to cancer susceptibility in Chinese people (P < 0.05). This meta-analysis showed that rs6504074 may play a decreased risk of gynecologic cancer in the overall population. Rs4988344, rs4986764, and rs6504074 were significantly related to decreasing cancer risk in Chinese population.

Purpose: Single nucleotide variations in the liver fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP, FABP1) gene lead to changes in cellular signaling pathways and lipid metabolism. FABP1 polymorphisms were associated with some liver diseases, like steatotic hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the association between FABP1 rs1545224 and rs2241883 polymorphisms and hepatitis B virus-related liver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been reported. We performed this study to explore their relationship. Methods: One thousand individuals (250 healthy controls, 250 chronic HBV (CHB), 250 LC, and 250 HCC patients) were recruited. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were applied to assess the difference in allele and genotype frequencies. Cochran-Armitage trend test was used to evaluate the cumulative effect. Significant difference would be defined when the P value was less than 0.05. Results: The distribution of rs1545224 GG, AG and AA genotypes in healthy controls or CHB carriers was not significant when compared to LC or HCC patients (P>0.05). LC patients carrying at least one A allele are more likely to develop HCC in contrast with those with G allele (P0.05). Conclusions: Taken together, FABP1 rs1545224 polymorphism might increase HCC risk in LC patients, indicating that FABP1 rs1545224 polymorphism may be related to the process of developing HCC in Chinese patients with LC.

Objectives To investigate the efficacy and safety of premedication with simethicone/pronase during esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with sedation. Methods 610 patients were randomly allocated to two groups based on the type of premedication given. The premedication used in the control group was 10ml of lidocaine hydrochloride mucilage (LHM, N=314) and the premedication used in the intervention group was 80mL of simethicone/pronase solution plus 10ml of lidocaine hydrochloride mucilage (SP/LHM, N=296). The EGD was performed under sedation. The visibility scores, number of mucosal areas that need to be cleansed, water consumption for cleansing, time taken for the examination, diminutive lesion, pathological diagnosis, patients’ gag reflex and the oxygenation (pulse oximetry) were recorded. Background Light emitting diodes laser is emerging as an important source of light replacing conventional lights. It is widely used for illumination in the bar where young people love to go. But not everyone knows about the light damage to the eye especially to the macula. In this article, we report the case of a macular damage induced by LED-derived blue laser in a bar, studied with optical coherence tomography (OCT) to evaluate the retinal lesion and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) to evaluate functional damage. Case presentation Four days after the photo injury to the right eye, the visual acuity was 0.5. Funduscopy revealed a round red lesion in the macula of the right eye. Fluorescein angiography (FA) revealed no leakage. OCT revealed a deficiency in the center of the fovea. MfERG revealed a reduction of the peak value in the right eye compared to the left eye. One month later, although the vision was 1.0 in the right eye, OCT revealed a hyporeflectivity of the ellipsoid zone. MfERG still showed a reduction of the peak value in the right eye compared to the left eye. Conclusion We believe that general knowledge about laser injuries to the eye should be realized widely. We also think in cases of macular laser damage, the recovery of vision can not demonstrate the recovery of the function of photoreceptors.

Vertical hot ring rolling (VHRR) process has the characteristics of nonlinearity, time-variation and being susceptible to disturbance. Furthermore, the ring’s growth is quite fast within a short time, and the rolled ring’s position is asymmetrical. All of these cause that the ring’s dimensions cannot be measured directly. Through analyzing the relationships among the dimensions of ring blanks, the positions of rolls and the ring’s inner and outer diameter, the soft measurement model of ring’s dimensions is established based on the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN). A mass of data samples are obtained from VHRR finite element (FE) simulations to train and test the soft measurement NN model, and the model’s structure parameters are deduced and optimized by genetic algorithm (GA). Finally, the soft measurement system of ring’s dimensions is established and validated by the VHRR experiments. The ring’s dimensions were measured artificially and calculated by the soft measurement NN model. The results show that the calculation values of GA-RBFNN model are close to the artificial measurement data. In addition, the calculation accuracy of GA-RBFNN model is higher than that of RBFNN model. The research results suggest that the soft measurement NN model has high precision and flexibility. The research can provide practical methods and theoretical guidance for the accurate measurement of VHRR process.

This study examines some determinants of student performance in Advanced Accounting. Of the motivation factors studied (intended grade, intention to take the CPA exam, or attend graduate school) only the first has some association with student performance. Of the three distraction factors (job hours, job type, and course load) only the last has negative effect on student performance. Of the four selfperceived ability factors (Writing, Math, Reading, and Listening) only the last has some association with student performance. Finally, the grade in the pre-requisite Intermediate Accounting II course and overall GPA have significant associations with student performance.

BackgroundHodgkin lymphoma (HL) is an uncommon B cell lymphoma. We assessed the global, regional, and national burden of HL from 1990 to 2017, by gender, age, and social-demographic index (SDI).MethodsData on HL, including incidence, mortality, and disability adjusted life-years (DALY), from 1990 to 2017 were obtained from the 2017 Global Burden of Disease study. Estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were calculated to assess incidence rate, mortality, and DALY trends.ResultsHL incidences increased by 38.66%, from 72,937 in 1990 to 101,133 in 2017, while the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) was relatively stable. ASIR decreased in the low SDI regions (EAPC = − 2.58; 95% CI, from − 2.66 to − 2.49) and was stable in the other four SDI regions. Incidence showed a bimodal distribution with peak values in patients aged 20–39 years and patients aged 60 years or higher. The number of death cases and DALYs were stable. The age-standardized death rate decreased by 2.36% (95% CI, from − 2.43% to − 2.30%) per year. The annual age-standardized DALY rate decreased by 2.29% (95% CI, from − 2.36% to − 2.21%). The incidence and mortality in male subjects was higher than that in female subjects. The incidence in male and female subjects aged 15–30 years old was close, whereas the biggest difference existed in patients aged ConclusionGlobally, incidence of HL was stable, while mortality and DALY rate of HL had been decreasing from 1990 to 2017. Compared with lower and decreasing ASIR in the low SDI region, ASIR in the high SDI region was always high, indicating the need for HL treatment improvement and the establishment of more targeted and specific strategies in high SDI countries to reduce the incidence of HL.

Background It is well known that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been one of the most life-threatening diseases all over the world. Plenty of internal and extrinsic factors have been proven to be related to HCC, such as gene mutation, viral hepatitis, and Nitrosamines. Though previous studies demonstrated that glutathione S-transferase (GST) genotypes are associated with HCC, the conclusions are inconsistent. Therefore, we carried on a renewed meta-analysis to expound the connection between the null GSTM1, GSTT1 polymorphisms and the risk of HCC. Methods We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and CNKI databases to select qualified researches which satisfied the inclusion criteria up to July 31, 2018. Finally, we selected 41 articles with 6124 cases and 9781 controls in this meta-analysis. We use ORs and 95% confidence interval (CI) to evaluate the correlation intension between the GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genes and the risk of HCC. All the statistical processes were executed by Stata (version 12.0). Results The pooled analysis showed that both GSTM1 null genotypes (OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.18–1.59) and GSTT1 null genotypes (OR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.23–1.66) increased the risk of HCC. And GSTM1–GSTT1 dual-null genotypes also increased the risk of HCC (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.22–2.05). In the subgroup analysis, we obtained significant results among Asians when stratified by race, and the results are GSTM1 null OR = 1.44, 95% CI = (1.22–1.71), GSTT1 null OR = 1.48, 95% CI = (1.25–1.77), GSTM1–GSTT1 null OR = 1.58, 95% CI = (1.19–2.09), while we didn’t obtain significant results among Caucasians or Africans. Stratified analyses on the type of control indicated a higher risk of HCC associated with GSTM1, GSTT1 single null genotypes and GSTM1–GSTT1 dual-null genotypes in healthy people. No evidence of significant connection was discovered in chronic liver disease (CLD) except in GSTT1 single null. Conclusions Our study indicated that an individual who carries the GSTM1, GSTT1 single null genotypes and GSTT1–GSTM1 dual-null genotypes is more likely to develop HCC.
