In this paper, a compact and low-profile beam steering circularly polarized folded reflectarray antenna (CPFRA) with low scan loss for wide-angle coverage is proposed and designed. In order to obtain lower scan loss over a wider beam coverage range (BCR), a multibeam optimization method considering the illumination weighting factor is introduced to obtain minimum phase errors for the designed beam direction. To improve antenna compactness and alleviate the mutual couplings among multiple feeding sources, small-size substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed slot antennas are employed as the feeding sources, which are integrated with the single-layer reflector board. An incident angle insensitive circular polarizer is designed and integrated over the antenna aperture to achieve circularly polarized (CP) radiation over a wide BCR. At last, a 15-beam CPFRA working at Ka-band, with size 140 mm × 140 mm is designed, manufactured, and measured to validate the proposed design method. Measurement results show that the designed CPFRA can achieve a rather flat gain, with only a 2.1 dB scan loss, across the wide 3-dB BCR of ±29°. The good CP beams are formed over the entire coverage range without any blind zone. With the advantages of wide-angle coverage, low scan loss, and high integration, the proposed beam steering antenna is promising in applications such as 5G communication, radar imaging, and target recognition.

Oxytocin (OXT) is a nine amino acid neuropeptide hormone that has become one of the most intensively studied molecules in the past few decades. The vast majority of OXT is synthesized in the periventricular nucleus and supraoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus, and a few are synthesized in some peripheral organs (such as the uterus, ovaries, adrenal glands, thymus, pancreas, etc.) OXT modulates a series of physiological processes, including lactation, parturition, as well as some social behaviors. In addition, more and more attention has recently been focused on the analgesic effects of oxytocin. It has been reported that OXT can relieve tension and pain without other adverse effects. However, the critical role and detailed mechanism of OXT in analgesia remain unclear. Here, this review aims to summarize the mechanism of OXT in analgesia and some ideas about the mechanism.

This paper studies the relation between electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG) and infers the waveform of ECG via the PPG signals that can be obtained from affordable wearable Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices for mobile health. In order to address this inverse problem, a transform is proposed to map the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients of each PPG cycle to those of the corresponding ECG cycle based on our proposed cardiovascular signal model. The proposed method is evaluated with different morphologies of the PPG and ECG signals on three benchmark datasets with a variety of combinations of age, weight, and health conditions using different training setups. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a high prediction accuracy greater than 0.92 in averaged correlation for each dataset when the model is trained subject-wise. With a signal processing and learning system that is designed synergistically, we are able to reconstruct ECG signals by exploiting the relation of these two types of cardiovascular measurement. The reconstruction capability of the proposed method can enable low-cost ECG screening from affordable wearable IoT devices for continuous and long-term monitoring. This work may open up a new research direction to transfer the understanding of the clinical ECG knowledge base to build a knowledge base for PPG and data from wearable devices.

Topical corticosteroids are the primary treatment of ocular inflammation caused by surgery, injury, or other conditions. Drug pre-corneal residence time, drug water solubility, and drug corneal permeability coefficient are the major factors that determine the ocular drug bioavailability after topical administration. Although growing research successfully enhanced local delivery of corticosteroids utilizing various strategies, rational and dynamic approaches to strategy selection are still lacking. Within this review, an overview of the various strategies as well as their performance in retention, solubility, and permeability coefficient of corticosteroids are provided. On this basis, the tradeoff of strategy selection is discussed, which may shed light on the rational choice and application of ophthalmic delivery enhancement strategies.

In this article, split-tooth stator slot permanent magnet (PM) machines, which have high fault-tolerant capability, are proposed. Compared with the existing 12-slot 10-pole (12S10P) stator slot PM machine, the torque can be improved by 66% by properly choosing the split tooth number and other geometric parameters. It is found that two split teeth stator slot PM machine (ST2) shows the best torque characteristics among the stator slot PM machines with different split tooth number. To further illustrate the merits and demerits of ST2, a conventional 6S4P surface mounted PM machine (SPMM) and a 6S4P variable flux reluctance machine serve as the benchmarks to compare with the 6S11P ST2, at both open circuit condition and load condition. The 6S11P ST2 shows 68% higher torque over the 6S4P VFRM. Although the torque of the 6S11P ST2 is around half of the 6S4P SPMM, the former has 70% higher torque per PM volume than the latter. Furthermore, demagnetization analyses under three-phase short-circuit and pure d-axis currents show that the 6S11P ST2 has much better demagnetization withstand capability over the 6S4P SPMM. Background We and others have confirmed activation of macrophages plays a critical role in liver injury and fibrogenesis during HBV infection. And we have also proved HBeAg can obviously induce the production of macrophage inflammatory cytokines compared with HBsAg and HBcAg. However, the receptor and functional domain of HBeAg in macrophage activation and its effects and mechanisms on hepatic fibrosis remain elusive. Methods The potentially direct binding receptors of HBeAg were screened and verified by Co-IP assay. Meanwhile, the function domain and accessible peptides of HBeAg for macrophage activation were analyzed by prediction of surface accessible peptide, construction, and synthesis of truncated fragments. Furthermore, effects and mechanisms of the activation of hepatic stellate cells induced by HBeAg-treated macrophages were investigated by Transwell, CCK-8, Gel contraction assay, Phospho Explorer antibody microarray, and Luminex assay. Finally, the effect of HBeAg in hepatic inflammation and fibrosis was evaluated in both human and murine tissues by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, ELISA, and detection of liver enzymes. Results Herein, we verified TLR-2 was the direct binding receptor of HBeAg. Meanwhile, C-terminal peptide (122-143 aa.) of core domain in HBeAg was critical for macrophage activation. But arginine-rich domain of HBcAg hided this function, although HBcAg and HBeAg shared the same core domain. Furthermore, HBeAg promoted the proliferation, motility, and contraction of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) in a macrophage-dependent manner, but not alone. PI3K-AKT-mTOR and p38 MAPK signaling pathway were responsible for motility phenotype of HSCs, while the Smad-dependent TGF-β signaling pathway for proliferation and contraction of them. Additionally, multiple chemokines and cytokines, such as CCL2, CCL5, CXCL10, and TNF-α, might be key mediators of HSC activation. Consistently, HBeAg induced transient inflammation response and promoted early fibrogenesis via TLR-2 in mice. Finally, clinical investigations suggested that the level of HBeAg is associated with inflammation and fibrosis degrees in patients infected with HBV. Conclusions HBeAg activated macrophages via the TLR-2/NF-κB signal pathway and further exacerbated hepatic fibrosis by facilitating motility, proliferation, and contraction of HSCs with the help of macrophages.

Few pieces of research have focused on Micrococcus luteus bloodstream infection (BSI) because of its low incidence; hence data is needed to illustrate this uncommon infection. This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics of patients with M. luteus BSI. From January 2010 to December 2019, inpatients that met the criteria for M. luteus BSI were included in this study. Data was collected by reviewing electronic records. Ninety-seven patients were enrolled in this study. Sixty-three percent of the patients have a higher neutrophil percentage (NEUT%). The average blood C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration was 5.5 ± 6.4 mg/dl. 48.5% of the patients had malignancy, and 40.2% underwent invasive surgeries. Linezolid was found to have the largest average diameter of the inhibition zone (36 mm), while erythromycin was found to have the smallest average zone diameter (15 mm). However, some M. luteus strains had a potentially broad antimicrobial resistance spectrum. Cephalosporins (59.2%) and quinolones (21.4%) were the most commonly used antibiotics for empirical therapies. In conclusion, M. luteus BSI mainly happens in immunocompromised patients or those with former invasive surgeries or indwelling catheters. M. luteus strains are less responsive to erythromycin. Cephalosporins and quinolones are effective empirical antibiotics for M. luteus BSI; however, vancomycin and teicoplanin should be considered for potentially broadly drug-resistant M. luteus strains.

Objectives Percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) is usually performed to treat acute pancreatitis complicated by infected walled-off necrosis (WON). Insufficient drainage of infected WON may lead to a prolonged recovery process. Here, we introduce a modified PCD strategy that uses the triple guidance of choledochoscopy, ultrasonography, and computed tomography (CUC-PCD) to improve the therapeutic efficiency. Methods This study retrospectively analysed 73 patients with acute pancreatitis-related WON from January 2015 to January 2021. The first 38 patients were treated by ultrasonography/computed tomography-guided PCD (UC-PCD), and the next consecutive 35 patients by CUC-PCD. Perioperative data, procedural technical information, treatment outcomes, and follow-up data were collected. Results Demographic characteristics were statistically comparable between the two treatment groups (p > 0.05). After 48 h of PCD treatment, the CUC-PCD group achieved a significantly smaller size of the infected WON (p = 0.023), lower inflammatory response indexes (p = 0.020 for white blood cells, and p = 0.031 for C-reactive protein), and severity scores than the UC-PCD group (p p = 0.001), hospitalisation duration (p = 0.000), and global costs (p = 0.000) were observed in the CUC-PCD group compared to the UC-PCD group. There were no differences between the two groups regarding the rate of complications. Conclusions CUC-PCD is a safe and efficient approach with potential clinical applicability for treating infected WON owing to its feasibility in placing the drainage catheter at the optimal location in real time and performing primary necrosectomy without sinus tract formation and enlargement.

To meet requirements for high porosity and high strength, novel aqueous gel-casting process has been successfully developed to fabricate Al2O3-bonded porous fibrous YSZ ceramics with ρ-Al2O3 and YSZ fibers as raw materials. Microstructure, phase composition, apparent porosity, bulk density, thermal conductivity, and compressive strength of fabricated porous ceramics were investigated, and effects of fiber content on properties were discussed. According to results, bird nest 3D mesh with interlaced YSZ fibers and Al2O3 binder was formed, ensuring the ability to obtain high performance, lightweight ceramics. An increase in the number of YSZ fibers led to more complex interlaced arrangement of fibers and denser network structure of porous ceramics at retaining their stability. Furthermore, their apparent porosity and bulk density increased, whereas thermal conductivity and compressive strength decreased with increasing the fiber content. In particular, comparatively high porosity (71.1–72.7%), low thermal conductivity (0.209–0.503 W/mK), and relatively high compressive strength (3.45–4.24 MPa) were obtained for as-prepared porous ceramics, making them promising for applications in filters, thermal insulation materials, and separation membranes.

Background: There is an increasing demand for minimally invasive aortic valve replacement. This study aimed to investigate the safety and feasibility of minimally invasive aortic valve replacement through a right parasternal second intercostal transverse incision. Methods: This was a retrospective study, and we collected information from 111 patients who underwent isolated aortic valve replacement surgery performed by the same surgeon from January 2018 to December 2019. According to the operative approach, the patients were divided into a sternotomy aortic valve replacement (SAVR) group (n = 62) and a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement (Mini-AVR) group (n = 49). We compared the intraoperative and postoperative data between the two groups. Result: There was no difference in preoperative data between the Mini-AVR and SAVR. The postoperative ventilator-assisted time, CSICU time and postoperative hospital stay of the Mini-AVR were shorter than those of the SAVR [(15.45 ± 5.75) VS (18.51 ± 6.71) h; (1.77 ± 0.31) VS (2.04 ± 0.63) d; (8.69 ± 2.75) VS (10.77 ± 2.94) d], and the difference was statistically significant (P

This article analyses the electromagnetic performance of dc-biased current vernier reluctance machines (DCB-VRMs) with distributed windings. Taking example of 12-stator slot machines, the coil connection and current configuration are illustrated. Moreover, the back electromotive force (EMF), torque capability, etc., are analyzed by finite-element analysis (FEA). In addition, the torque density of DCB-VRMs equipped with distributed and nonoverlapping windings are compared. The results show that some combinations of distributed winding machines present a higher torque capability thanks to the higher pole ratio.

Infectious keratitis is the most common entities of corneal diseases, in which pathogen grows in the cornea leading to inflammation and destruction of the corneal tissues. Infectious keratitis is a medical emergency, for which a rapid and accurate diagnosis is needed for speedy initiation of prompt and precise treatment to halt the disease progress and to limit the extent of corneal damage; otherwise it may develop sight-threatening and even eye-globe-threatening condition. In this paper, we propose a sequential-level deep learning model to effectively discriminate the distinction and subtlety of infectious corneal disease via the classification of clinical images. In this approach, we devise an appropriate mechanism to preserve the spatial structures of clinical images and disentangle the informative features for clinical image classification of infectious keratitis. In competition with 421 ophthalmologists, the performance of the proposed sequential-level deep model achieved 80.00% diagnostic accuracy, far better than the 49.27% diagnostic accuracy achieved by ophthalmologists over 120 test images., Comment: Accepted by Engineering

In this article, the rotor stress is analysed for a high-speed permanent magnet (PM) machine (HSPMM) with segmented magnets retained by a carbon-fibre sleeve. The influence of rotor PM segmentation is firstly considered in the stress analysis. It is found that when the segmented magnets are under tensile stress, significant sleeve stress concentration will occur due to magnet edging effect. By contrast, the PMs will benefit from the segmentation with reduced tangential stress. This stress reduction effect is enhanced when the number of PM segments is larger. Furthermore, the influence of PM segmentation on the worst operating scenario is determined. In order to avoid stress concentration due to PM segmentation, the design guidelines are then given by investigating the influence of sleeve thickness and interference fit. A new design scheme of sleeve thickness is proposed based on the identified worst case scenarios. Finally, a 6-slot 4-pole high speed PM machine with segmented magnets retained by carbon-fibre sleeve is prototyped and tested at the speed of 90 krpm. The rotor stability indirectly indicts the validity of the theoretical analysis and design scheme.

This article investigates some novel modular consequent pole PM machines (CPMs) with E-core and C-core stators. Different slot-pole number combinations including 12-slot/10-pole ( Ns>2p ) and 12-slot/14-pole ( Ns ) have been investigated. Their static and dynamic electromagnetic performances have been investigated, e.g. the phase back-EMF, on-load torque, torque-speed curves, power factor-speed curves and also efficiency maps are compared. It is found that the existence of flux gaps (FGs) can improve the average torque of the 12-slot/14-pole E-core modular CPMs while the C-core structure can be a better candidate where relatively low torque ripple is desirable. Moreover, by selecting proper FG width, the 12-slot/14-pole E-core modular CPMs can achieve better flux-weakening capability and higher efficiency while the 12-slot/10-pole C-core modular CPMs can have higher power factors over the whole speed range. The finite element simulation results have been validated by a series of experiments using 12-slot/14-pole modular CPMs with both C-core and E-core stators.

Background To compare the efficacy and safety of microwave ablation (MWA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as first-line treatments for perivascular HCC. Methods This multicentre study enrolled 170 patients with perivascular HCC who underwent MWA or RFA. The ablation response, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and complications between the treatment groups for the total and propensity score-matched (PSM) cohorts were compared. Results The disease control rates for MWA and RFA were similar in total (94% vs. 91%, p = 0.492) and PSM (93% vs. 93%, p = 1.00) cohorts. The PFS rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 71%, 55% and 52% in MWA group and 61%, 33% and 28% in RFA group (p = 0.017). The OS rates were comparable between two groups in total (p = 0.249) and PSM cohorts (p = 0.345). In subgroup analyses, the PFS of patients with periportal HCC (45 vs. 36 months, p = 0.048) and a single HCC nodule (51 vs. 42 months, p = 0.014) were significantly better in MWA group than RFA. Major complications were more frequent in the MWA group than in RFA (27% vs. 7%, p Conclusion Compared with RFA, MWA provides better control of tumour progression especially in periportal HCC or single-nodule perivascular HCC patients.

Electrical machines with high-temperature superconducting (HTS) armature windings can benefit from high power density and efficiency. Furthermore, by using permanent magnets (PM) on the rotor, the cryogenic system can be significantly simplified compared with the fully superconducting (SC) machines or the machines with SC field windings. Compared with the conventional electrical machines, the performance of machines with HTS armature windings can be more sensitive to the design parameters due to the interaction between the operating current and the flux density. In this article, the influence of stator geometry on the machine with HTS armature windings and PM rotor is investigated. By considering the interaction between the operating current and the flux density, an iteration procedure for calculating the operating current of the HTS armature windings is proposed. A 10-MW surface-mounted PM wind power generator with HTS armature windings is studied by the finite element analysis. It is found that machines with different coil angle have different behaviors when changing the tooth width and the dimensions of tooth tips, which is different from conventional electrical machines. A new design and optimization method is then developed. Finally, the optimal design is identified with global optimization.

Automotive starter-generator applications require a high peak torque for cranking and a wide speed flux weakening region for generation. In such applications, the pole-changing winding induction machine offers a wide speed flux weakening region with a low pole number and a high peak torque capability when operated with a higher number of poles. In this article, a 6-phase, electronic pole-changing winding induction machine with improved performance over the existing 3-phase pole-changing is discussed. Compared to the 3-phase 120o phase belt winding, the proposed 6-phase pole-changing winding induction machine shows a 15 % increase in peak torque due to improved winding factor. Finite element analysis is used to predict the torque capability, losses and efficiency of the 6-phase and 3-phase pole-changing winding induction machines. A 1kW induction machine is prototyped and the improved torque capability of the 6-phase pole-changing machines over 3-phase counterparts is experimentally validated under various operating conditions.

Traditional diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children is primarily through a questionnaire filled out by parents/teachers and clinical observations by doctors. It is inefficient and heavily depends on the doctor’s level of experience. In this paper, we integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology into a software-hardware coordinated system to make ADHD diagnosis more efficient. Together with the intelligent analysis module, the camera group will collect the eye focus, facial expression, 3D body posture, and other children’s information during the completion of the functional test. Then, a multi-modal deep learning model is proposed to classify abnormal behavior fragments of children from the captured videos. In combination with other system modules, standardized diagnostic reports can be automatically generated, including test results, abnormal behavior analysis, diagnostic aid conclusions, and treatment recommendations. This system has participated in clinical diagnosis in Department of Psychology, The Children’s Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, and has been accepted and praised by doctors and patients.

This article proposes a novel two-phase dc-biased current Vernier reluctance machine (DCBVRM) equipped with concentrated windings. Compared with the existing three-phase DCBVRMs, the number of power electronic switching devices has been greatly reduced without sacrificing performance. Consequently, the overall system cost is greatly reduced, and thus, it is competitive for low-cost applications such as household appliances. To highlight the advantages of the proposed topology, the theories of coil connection, current configuration, and so on are illustrated, and some electromagnetic characteristics, such as flux density, back electromotive force, and electromagnetic torque, are predicted by finite-element analysis (FEA) with two eight-stator slot machines. Finally, the comparison with three-phase counterpart shows that the proposed eight stator slots, seven rotor slots, and two-phase machine can exhibit 21% higher torque with much lower inverter cost.

Yellow-emitting YAG:Ce transparent ceramic is recognized as an ideal color converter in high-power blue LEDs and LDs, but the absence of scattering centers in its microstructure leads to a low light extraction efficiency and poor light uniformity. Here, taking advantage of the scattering effect and the transparency of YAG:Ce ceramics, Ce-free YAG phase was used as a second component to form a composite with YAG:Ce phosphor. The sintered YAG:Ce-YAG ceramic possessed a high transparency of ∼63 % and a thermal conductivity of 8.9 Wm−1 K−1. Due to its beneficial thermal properties and high external quantum efficiency of 70.2 %, the YAG:Ce-YAG ceramic could be excited under a high blue-laser flux density of up to 9.60 W/mm2 and showed a luminous emittance of 1220 lm/mm2. Due to light scattering arising from the slightly different refractive indices of the two phases, the designed YAG:Ce-YAG ceramic showed better lighting effects than a single-phase transparent YAG:Ce ceramic.

Background & aims Liver resection (LR) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) are commonly used for the treatment of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the optimal treatment modality remains unclear. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of LR vs RFA for recurrent HCC. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for relevant studies. The primary outcomes were overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). The secondary outcomes were major complications and hospital stay. Results Eighteen studies with 1991 patients with recurrent HCC were included. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) for OS demonstrated that LR had significantly better OS than RFA in recurrent HCC (HR, 0.81; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.68–0.95). Specifically, LR was associated with higher 2-, 3- and 4-year OS rates compared with RFA. The pooled HR for DFS showed no significant difference between LR and RFA during the whole follow-up period (HR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.76–1.07). In this article, the operating current and torque of surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) wind power generators with high-temperature superconducting (HTS) armature windings are analyzed. The influence of coil location and current angle on the electromagnetic performance is investigated systematically. The results show that the location of the HTS coils significantly affects the operating current and torque. Furthermore, the maximum torque current angle of SPM wind power generators with HTS armature windings can be different from 180° due to the interaction between the armature and magnet fields. A design optimization method for wind power generators with HTS armature windings is developed in this article. The optimal design is then identified with consideration of the coupling influence of coil location and current angle.

Purpose This study compared the removability of AH Plus and EndoSequence BC sealers using in vitro micro-computed tomography. Methods Ten single-canal, extracted human teeth were cleaned and shaped with ProTaper NEXT rotary files to size X5 (50/0.06) (Dentsply-Sirona). Canals were obturated with a single cone gutta-percha and either AH Plus (Dentsply-Sirona) (Group A) or EndoSequence BC (Brasseler) (Group B). ProTaper Universal Retreatment files (Dentsply-Sirona) were used to remove obturation materials after 90 days at 37oC/100% humidity. Each tooth was scanned using micro-computed tomography (SkyScan 1272; Bruker) at an isotropic resolution of 6 μm from which the percent of material removed was calculated. Two-sample t-tests and one-way ANOVA were used for analysis. Results The percent removal of materials in the coronal third was 92.9% ± 7.3% (Group A) and 93.2% ± 6.1% (Group B). Removal in the middle third was 94.9% ± 8.5% (Group A) and 96.5% ± 6.1% (Group B). Apical third removal was 76.2% ± 27.9% (Group A) and 70.1% ± 30.8% (Group B). No statistically significant differences were determined between the two sealers or among the sectional thirds within each group (P > 0.05). Conclusion AH Plus and EndoSequence BC sealers exhibit the same removability at all canal levels of 70% to 96%, with better removal coronally.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a liver disease with a complex underlying mechanism, and patients with HCC have low survival rates. Iron metabolism plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of HCC; however, the prognostic value of iron metabolism-related and methylated genes for HCC needs to be further explored. In the present study, we identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that play a role in iron metabolism and DNA methylation in HCC from The Cancer Genome Atlas. Four of these DEGs, whose expression levels are correlated with HCC prognosis, namely, RRM2, FTCD, CYP2C9, and ATP6V1C1, were further used to construct a prognostic model for HCC, wherein the risk score was calculated using the gene expression of the four DEGs. This could be used to predict the overall survival of HCC patients for 1, 3, and 5 years. Results of a multivariate Cox regression analysis further indicated that the risk score was an independent variable correlated with the prognosis of HCC patients. The identified gene signature was further validated using an independent cohort of HCC patients from the International Cancer Genome Consortium. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis and gene set enrichment analysis were performed to identify potential regulatory mechanisms of the gene signature in HCC. Taken together, we identified key prognostic factors of iron metabolism-related and methylated genes for HCC, providing a potential treatment strategy for HCC.

Our body is a multiple perception learning system. Bionic application of perception cognitive functions based on neuromorphic electronics would endow artificial intelligence new intension. In particular, electrolyte-gated transistors have been suggested for neuromorphic platform applications. Due to the fundamental limitations for ionic liquid and ionic gel-based electrolyte, it would be interesting to obtain solid-state electrolytes through a vacuum free system. Thus, in the present work, a simple aqueous solution-processed mesoporous silica coating-gated oxide photo-perception neuromorphic transistors have been proposed. The neuromorphic transistors exhibit good electrical performances. A resistor-loaded inverter is built, exhibiting typical inverter operation at low working voltage. ‘Selective potentiation and depression’ behaviors have been mimicked on the neuromorphic transistor. In addition, the proposed neuromorphic transistor shows optical and electrical synergic response behaviors. Neurological behavior of conditioned taste aversion learning has been mimicked. Thus, the single photo-perception neuromorphic transistor could integrate the functions of perception and neuromorphic algorithm. The proposed photo-perception neuromorphic transistors could have potentials in artificial perception learning systems.

Background: Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare chronic inflammatory disease of the breast. The current therapeutic effects of the antibiotic therapy and surgical or immunomodulatory (steroid) treatment are normally poor due to the unclear etiology. Method: This study aimed to identify the differentially expressed mRNAs in GM tissues using RNA sequencing and further explored the functions of differentially expressed mRNAs resulting in GM. Moreover, we revealed the relationship between GM and breast cancer by shared highly expressed genes in GM tissues and breast cancer tissues. Results: A total of 12,115 mRNAs were analyzed in the whole expression profile, and 207 mRNAs (136 upregulated and 71 downregulated mRNAs) were differently expressed between the GM tissues and normal tissues. The enrichment analysis showed that the differentially expressed mRNAs were enriched in the biological processes and played a significant role in the immune system. Besides, the genes expressed significantly highly in breast cancer tissues are found to be enriched with GM genes, which may explain the similar clinical features between breast cancer and GM. We also found that the HSD11B1 gene which was differentially expressed in GM was used as drug target of prednisone, which is a common treatment for GM. Conclusion: This study is the first to use sequencing technology to elucidate the genetic mechanisms of GM. The finding of this study may have potential value in GM diagnosis and also provides potential drug targets for GM treatment.

Objectives We aimed to establish a novel prognostic long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) signature for hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HBV-HCC) patients after hepatectomy and to validate its prognostic efficacy compared with other clinical staging systems. Methods Expression data of 374 HCC samples were retrieved from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Cox regression analyses were performed to develop the lncRNA model. The expression levels of lncRNAs were detected by qualitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in HBV-HCC. Then the qRT-PCR-based signature and nomogram were constructed and compared with those of other clinical staging systems in a clinical cohort and qRT-PCR, RNA fluorescent in situ hybridization and comprehensive bioinformatics analyses were conducted. Results The signature containing five lncRNAs was constructed through TCGA. This model showed the highest predictive efficacy in patients with HBV-HCC. Compared with normal liver tissues, all lncRNAs were highly expressed in HBV-HCC. A four-lncRNA signature containing LINC01116, DDX11-AS1, LUCAT1 and FIRRE was developed based on the qRT-PCR data in a clinical HBV-HCC patient cohort. A Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that the low-risk group had significantly longer overall survival than the high-risk group. Additionally, the qRT-PCR-based four-lncRNA formula was an independent prognostic factor and had better predictive efficacy for survival (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.875) compared with other clinical staging systems in HBV-HCC. The lncRNA-mRNA co-expression and enrichment analyses revealed the potential regulatory mechanisms of the lncRNA identified. Conclusion The four-lncRNA model may be an effective prognostic signature and provides potential prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for HBV-HCC.

Based on web services and the Activiti 5.0 workflow engine, we built a workflow-based web service chain processing flow platform to simplify the operations of complex geospatial information processing applications in the area of high performance geo-computation. The proposed framework includes a web portal and a convenient mode for similar specific applications. We also designed a general service publishing template for high performance commutating (HPC) that can reduce platform differences among different HPC systems and facilitate HPC techniques to improve processing efficiency. Finally, we used a digital elevation model to verify and test the platform. The results indicated that the proposed service chain platform offered convenience and efficiency when processing massive data with HPC.

We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study of metabolic dysfunction‐associated hepatocellular carcinoma. In this cohort, cirrhosis was not associated with poorer survival, while history of liver imaging was., Metabolic‐associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a major cause of liver‐related complications, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). While MAFLD‐related HCC is known to occur in the absence of cirrhosis, our understanding of MAFLD‐related HCC in this setting is limited. Here, we characterize MAFLD‐related HCC and the impact of cirrhosis and screening on survival. This was a multicenter, retrospective, cohort study of MAFLD‐related HCC. MAFLD was defined based on the presence of race‐adjusted overweight, diabetes, or both hypertension and dyslipidemia in the absence of excess alcohol use or other underlying cause of liver disease. The primary outcome of interest was overall survival, and the primary dependent variables were cirrhosis status and prior HCC screening. We used Kaplan‐Meier methods to estimate overall survival and Cox proportional hazards models and random forest machine learning to determine factors associated with prognosis. This study included 1,382 patients from 11 centers in the United States and East/Southeast Asia. Cirrhosis was present in 62% of patients, but under half of these patients had undergone imaging within 12 months of HCC diagnosis. Patients with cirrhosis were more likely to have early stage disease but less often received curative therapy. After adjustment, cirrhosis was not associated with prognosis, but the presence of cancer‐related symptoms at diagnosis was associated with poorer prognosis. Conclusion: Cirrhosis was not associated with overall survival in this cohort of MAFLD‐related HCC, while diagnosis in the presence of symptoms was associated with poorer prognosis. The HCC surveillance rate in patients with MAFLD‐related HCC was disappointingly low in a multicenter cohort.

In order to provide the general guidance in constructing the novel modular machines with redundant teeth, the available slot and pole number combinations based on the balanced conditions are summarized in this article. After the brief review of the machine structure, the general slot and pole number combinations are listed: Firstly, the conventional modular machines used to construct the proposed modular machines need to possess integer times of 3 repetitive machine units. Each machine unit should construct as a 3-phase type. Then, a redundant machine unit providing the redundant teeth for modularity is necessary. This redundant machine only has one pole pair to make sure the space waste is minimal. The slot number of this redundant machine is determined by the greatest common divisor of the slot and pole pair numbers of the conventional modular machine. Finally, the combination of the conventional modular machine and the redundant one generates the proposed modular machine. In order to clearly illustrate the influence of slot and pole number combinations on machine performance, four combinations are chosen as examples to be compared. A 42-slot/32-pole machine is prototyped and tested to validate the analyses.

To reopen the economy safely during the COVID-19 pandemic, governments need the capability to proactively identify new and often asymptomatic infections, as well as contact tracing. Policymakers and public health professionals need a sampling-testing method that can achieve broad population coverage without overwhelming medical workers. We observe that COVID-19 high-risk groups are located in the hubs and cliques of our geo-social network, formed by the close encounters of people during daily life. These individuals are the de facto “canary in a coal mine”. We propose that nations offer free and anonymous testing service to them. With open-source computer algorithms and datasets, only a small fraction of the population selected for COVID-19 testing can cover the majority of high-exposure-risk individuals. A 0.3% sampled testing for a megacity covers 3/4 of its entire population. A 3% sampled testing for a rural town covers 3/4 of its entire population. With government oversight and public consent, this approach can serve each province/state or city/township for decentralized daily testing planning. However, to protect privacy, we recommend constructing the geo-social network of anonymized cellphones, not named individuals. This infrastructure should be dismantled once the pandemic is largely over. This can be achieved by policymakers, health workers, and engineers together in solidarity.

Glutamate receptor, ionotropic, N-methyl-D-aspartate associated protein 1 (GRINA) is a member of the NMDA receptors (NMDARs) and is involved in several neurological diseases, which governs the key processes of neuronal cell death or the release of neurotransmitters. Upregulation of GRINA has been reported in multiple diseases in human beings, such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and schizophrenia (SCZ), with which the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In this review, we provide a general overview of the expression and physiological function of GRINA in the central nervous system (CNS) diseases, including stroke, depression ,epilepsy, SCZ, and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Bias-stress instability has been a challenging problem and a roadblock for developing stable p-type organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). This device instability is hypothesized because of electron-correlated charge carrier trapping, neutralization, and recombination at semiconductor/dielectric interfaces and in semiconductor channels. Here, in this paper, a strategy is demonstrated to improve the bias-stress stability by constructing a multilayered drain electrode with energy-level modification layers (ELMLs). Several organic small molecules with high lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels are experimented as ELMLs. The energy-level offset between the Fermi level of the drain electrode and the LUMOs of the ELMLs is shown to construct the interfacial barrier, which suppresses electron injection from the drain electrode into the channel, leading to significantly improved bias-stress stability of OFETs. The mechanism of the ELMLs on the bias-stress stability is studied by quantitative modeling analysis of charge carrier dynamics. Of all injection models evaluated, it is found that Fowler-Nordheim tunneling describes best the observed experimental data. Both theory and experimental data show that, by using the ELMLs with higher LUMO levels, the electron injection can be suppressed effectively, and the bias-stress stability of p-type OFETs can thereby be improved significantly.

Background and aim Globally, China has the highest chronic hepatitis C (CHC) burden, but its real-world direct-acting antiviral (DAA) data are limited. Our aim is to investigate the real-world outcome of China Food and Drug Administration-approved DAA therapies across mainland China including those with genotype (GT) 3. Methods The REAL-C is a multinational real-world interferon-free DAA-treated CHC registry of several mainland China and other Asian centers. We evaluated the sustained virological response rate 12 weeks after end of treatment (SVR12), adverse events, and treatment effect on liver function and fibrosis (fibrosis-4 index). Results We analyzed 859 DAA-treated CHC patients (6/1/2017-5/30/2019) from 12 mainland China centers (three municipalities and nine provinces): median age 52, 49.9% male, 33.1% cirrhosis, 95% treatment naive, and 2.5% HBsAg+ . The most common GT was GT1b (523, 62.2%), followed by GT2a (156, 18.5%), GT3b (74, 8.8%), GT3a (41, 4.9%), and GT6 (37, 4.4%). SVR12 rates were 98.0% overall (95% confidence interval 96.9-98.8%), 98.1% for GT1b, 96.8% GT2a, 100% GT3a, 97.3% GT3b, and 100% GT6. Baseline cirrhosis and male sex but not prior treatment history, renal dysfunction, age, and GTs were associated with SVR12. For both cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients, there were significant improvement in liver function tests, alpha fetoprotein, and fibrosis-4 index with SVR12. Serious adverse events were rare (1.1%) with only nine patients discontinuing therapy prematurely and anemia being the most common adverse event (13.1%, mostly with ribavirin). Conclusions In real-world Chinese patients with diverse GTs, Chinese Food and Drug Administration-approved interferon-free DAAs were well tolerated, provided high cure rates (98.0% overall) including GT3a/3b, and led to improvement of liver function.

Sequential invasive-noninvasive ventilation (NIV) improves the outcomes of patients with respiratory failure caused by acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD); however, there is no clear consensus on the optimal timing of the switch to sequential invasive-NIV in these patients. In the present study, a potential role for the modified Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score to guide sequential weaning was investigated. Patients with AECOPD and respiratory failure were prospectively recruited from three study centers (Wenling Hospital Affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University, the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University and Changsha Central Hospital) between January 1st 2016 and December 31st 2018. Patients were randomly assigned to group A and B, with the switching point for sequential weaning strategy in the two groups being a modified GCS score ≥13 and 10 points, respectively. Each group included 240 patients. Baseline demographic characteristics were comparable in the two groups. The duration of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) in group A was significantly shorter than that in group B. However, there were no significant between-group differences with respect to the incidence of re-intubation, ventilator-associated pneumonia, in-hospital mortality or the length of hospital stay. Use of a modified GCS score ≥13 as the switching point for sequential invasive-NIV may help decrease the duration of IMV in patients with AECOPD and respiratory failure.

This study aimed to explore the role of miR-146b-3p in acute respiratory distress syndrome in septic mice. To obtain red-emitting luminescent material for high-power UV LED and UV LD applications, an additive-free Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphor ceramic was successfully prepared in this work. The nitrate pyrogenation method is applied to obtain raw nanopowders with high reactivity, and a hybrid sintering method combining low-temperature presintering and subsequent hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is then applied to realize full densification of the final ceramic products. The effects of the presintering temperature on the density, microstructural, and optical properties are investigated in detail. The HIP-treated Y2O3:Eu3+ ceramic presintered at 1450 °C exhibits a high transmittance near 80 % at 600 nm. Due to the nonuse of sintering additives, the thermal conductivity of Y2O3:Eu3+ ceramic product reaches 10.9 Wm−1 K−1 at room temperature. The achieved Y2O3:Eu3+ ceramic also exhibits good applicability under the excitation of a UV LED chip and UV laser light, showing promise as a color converter for high-power UV LED and UV LD applications.

Photoswitchable fluorescent diarylethenes are promisingly widely applied in the fields of optical memory, all-optical transistors, bioimaging, and super-resolution imaging, and so on. However, they face the problems of fluorescence quenching in an aggregated/solid state, the inadequate fluorescence ON/OFF switching ratio, and the necessity of UV-light irradiation. Herein, we report a novel kind of high-performance diarylethenes with aggregated-induced emission (AIE) by conjugating two diarylethene groups on one AIE-gen (i.e., TPE-2DTE (blue-green fluorescent) and OTPE-2DTE (orange fluorescence)). Their open forms show enhanced fluorescence in the aggregated and solid states. The closed form of TPE-2DTE/OTPE-2DTE was effectively generated upon short-wavelength visible-light (400 nm-450 nm) irradiation, whose fluorescence was dramatically quenched by intra- and inter-molecular energy transfer. Remarkably, 405 nm purple irradiation gives fluorescence ON/OFF ratios of 1196:1 and 1983:1 for TPE-2DTE and OTPE-2DTE, respectively. The reverse process can be accomplished after another longer wavelength irradiation such as 621 nm and shows considerable fatigue resistance. Taking advantage of superior photoswitching properties under visible-light irradiation, TPE-2DTE and OTPE-2DTE were used for super-resolution imaging with a high resolution of sub 50 nm. This work offers guidance to design bright-emitting and high-performance visible-light-controlled diarylethene photoswitches for practical applications.

Depression is one of the prevalent psychiatric illnesses with a comprehensive performance such as low self-esteem, lack of motivation, anhedonia, poor appetite, low energy, and uncomfortableness without a specific cause. So far, the cause of depression is not very clear, but it is certain that many aspects of biological psychological and social environment are involved in the pathogenesis of depression. Recently, the prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been indicated to be a pivotal brain region in the pathogenesis of depression. And increasing evidence showed that the abnormal activity of the PFC neurons is linked with depressive symptoms. Unveiling the molecular and cellular, as well as the circuit properties of the PFC neurons will help to find out how abnormalities in PFC neuronal activity are associated with depressive disorders. In addition, concerning many antidepressant drugs, in this review, we concluded the effect of several antidepressants on PFC neuronal activity to better understand its association with depression.

In recent years, we have witnessed an increasing demand to process big data in numerous applications. It is observed that there often exist substantial amounts of repetitive data in different portions of a big data repository/dataset for applications such as genome sequence analyses. In this paper, we present a novel method, called the VA-Store, to reduce the large space requirement for repetitive data in prevailing genome sequence analysis tasks using $k$ k -mers (i.e., subsequences of length $k$ k ) with multiple $k$ k values. The VA-Store maintains a physical store for one portion of the input dataset (i.e., $k_0$ k 0 -mers) and supports multiple virtual stores for other portions of the dataset (i.e., $k$ k -mers with $k \ne k_0$ k ≠ k 0 ). Utilizing important relationships among repetitive data, the VA-Store transforms a given query on a virtual store into one or more queries on the physical store for execution. Both precise and approximate transformations are considered. Accuracy estimation models for approximate solutions are derived. Query optimization strategies are suggested to improve query performance. Our experiments using real and synthetic datasets demonstrate that the VA-Store is quite promising in providing effective storage and efficient query processing for solving a kernel database problem on repetitive big data for genome sequence analysis applications.
