Background: Partial nephrectomy (PN) has a non-negligible perioperative morbidity. Comparative evidence of the available surgical techniques is limited. Objective: To compare the perioperative outcomes of open, laparoscopic, and robotic PN. Objective To identify meaningful predictors and to develop a nomogram of postoperative surgical complications in patients treated with partial nephrectomy (PN). Patients and methods We prospectively evaluated 4308 consecutive patients who had surgical treatment for renal tumours, between 2013 and 2016, at 26 Italian urological centres (RECORd 2 project). A multivariable logistic regression for surgical complications was performed. A nomogram was created from the multivariable model. Internal validation processes were performed using bootstrapping with 1000 repetitions. Results Overall, 2584 patients who underwent PN were evaluated for the final analyses. The median (interquartile [IQR]) American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score was 2 (2-3). In all, 72.4% of patients had clinical T1a (cT1a) stage tumours. The median (IQR) Preoperative Aspects and Dimensions Used for an Anatomical (PADUA) score was 7 (6-8). Overall, 34.3%, 27.7%, 38% of patients underwent open PN (OPN), laparoscopic PN (LPN), and robot-assisted PN (RAPN). Overall and major postoperative surgical complications were recorded in 10.2% and 2.5% of patients, respectively. At multivariable analysis, age, ASA score, cT2 vs cT1a stage, PADUA score, preoperative anaemia, OPN and LPN vs RAPN, were significant predictive factors of postoperative surgical complications. We used these variables to construct a nomogram for predicting the risk of postoperative surgical complications. At decision curve analysis, the nomogram led to superior outcomes for any decision associated with a threshold probability of >5%. Conclusion Several clinical predictors have been associated with postoperative surgical complications after PN. We used this information to develop and internally validate a nomogram to predict such risk.

Background: A new edition of the TNM was recently released that includes modifications for the staging system of kidney cancers. Specifically, T2 cancers were subclassified into T2a and T2b ( 10 cm), tumors with renal vein involvement or perinephric fat involvement were classified as T3a cancers, and those with adrenal involvement were classified as T4 cancers. Objective: Our aim was to validate the recently released edition of the TNM staging system for primary tumor classification in kidney cancer. Design, setting, and participants: Our multicenter retrospective study consisted of 5339 patients treated in 16 academic Italian centers. Intervention: Patients underwent either radical or partial nephrectomy. Measurements: Univariable and multivariable Cox regression models addressed cancer-specific survival (CSS) after surgery. Results and limitations: In the study, 1897 patients (35.5%) were classified as pT1a, 1453 (27%) as pT1b, 437 (8%) as pT2a, 153 (3%) as pT2b, 1059 (20%) as pT3a, 117 (2%) as pT3b, 26 (0.5%) as pT3c, and 197 (4%) as pT4. At a median follow-up of 42 mo, 786 (15%) had died of disease. In univariable analysis, patients with pT2b and pT3a tumors had similar CSS, as did patients with pT3c and pT4 tumors. Moreover, both pT3a and pT3b stages included patients with heterogeneous outcomes. In multivariable analysis, the novel classification of the primary tumor was a powerful independent predictor of CSS (p for trend < 0.0001). However, the substratification of pT1 tumors did not retain an independent predictive role. The major limitations of the study are retrospective design, lack of central pathologic review, and the small number of patients included in some substages. Conclusions: The recently released seventh edition of the primary tumor staging system for kidney tumors is a powerful predictor of CSS. However, some of the substages identified by the classification have overlapping prognoses, and other substages include patients with heterogeneous outcomes. Worldwide, stomas represent a medical and social problem. Data from the literature on stoma management are extensive but not homogeneous. In Italy, no guidelines exist for this topic. Thus, clear and comprehensive clinical guidelines based on evidence-based data and best practice are need. In 2018, the Multidisciplinary Italian Study group for STOmas, called MISSTO, was founded. The aim was to elaborate guidelines for practice management of enteral and urinary stomas in adults. A systematic review of the literature was performed using PubMed, National Guideline Clearinghouse, and other databases. The research included guidelines, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized clinical trials, cohort studies, and case reports. Five main topics were identified: “stoma preparation”, “stoma creation”, “stoma complications”, “stoma care”, and “stoma reversal”. The systematic review was performed for each topic, and studies were evaluated according to the GRADE system, AGREE II tool. Recommendations were elaborated in the form of statements with an established grade of recommendation for each statement. For low levels of scientific evidence statements, a consensus conference composed of expert members of the major Italian scientific societies in the field of stoma management and care was held. After discussing, correcting, validating, or eliminating the statements by the experts, the final version of the guidelines was elaborated and prepared for publication. This manuscript is focused on statements on the surgical management of enteral stomas. These guidelines are the first Italian guidelines on multidisciplinary management of enteral stomas with the aim of assisting surgeons during stoma management and care.

Purpose: The excision of the renal tumor with a substantial margin of healthy parenchyma is considered the gold standard technique for partial nephrectomy. However, simple enucleation showed excellent results in some retrospective series. We compared the oncologic outcomes after standard partial nephrectomy and simple enucleation. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 982 patients who underwent standard partial nephrectomy and 537 who had simple enucleation for localized renal cell carcinoma at 16 academic centers between 1997 and 2007. Local recurrence, cancer specific survival and progression-free survival were the main outcomes of this study. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate survival functions and differences were assessed with the log rank statistic. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression models addressed progression-free survival and cancer specific survival. Results: Median followup of the patients undergoing traditional partial nephrectomy and simple enucleation was 51 +/- 37.8 and 54.4 +/- 36 months, respectively (p = 0.08). The 5 and 10-year progression-free survival estimates were 88.9 and 82% after standard partial nephrectomy, and 91.4% and 90.8% after simple enucleation (p = 0.09). The 5 and 10-year cancer specific survival estimates were 93.9% and 91.6% after standard partial nephrectomy, and 94.3% and 93.2% after simple enucleation (p = 0.94). On multivariable analysis the adopted nephron sparing surgery technique was not an independent predictor of progression-free survival (HR 0.8, p = 0.55) and cancer specific survival (HR 0.7, p = 0.53) when adjusted for the effect of the other covariates. Conclusions: To our knowledge this is the first multicenter, comparative study showing oncologic equivalence of standard partial nephrectomy and simple enucleation.

Objectives The antitumour effect of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) still remains relatively undefined. Most investigations on its mechanism of action have focused on mononuclear cells; little consideration has been given to granulocytes. We analysed urine of patients with bladder cancer during 8 wk of intravesical BCG prophylaxis. The number of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) and urothelial cells (UCs) was evaluated. We examined the in vitro response of the T24 UC line to human PMNs after BCG treatment. Methods Seventeen patients were enrolled in the study. Cytologic analyses were performed on urine samples collected before each BCG instillation and after 2h from the first voided urine after BCG instillation. Elastase activity was determined on these samples to evaluate PMN activation. PMN-induced damage was measured on the T24 cell line treated with BCG. Results After BCG treatment, a large number of PMNs transmigrated through the urothelium and PMNs adherent to detached UCs were found. One patient, who did not respond with significant PMN transmigration, experienced recurrent disease. The number of eosinophils that transmigrated was low, with the exception of three patients with recurrent disease. In vitro, PMNs adhered to BCG-primed T24 cells and damaged the monolayer. Conclusions The results agree with recent evidence that PMNs may play an important role in the antitumour action of BCG during the BCG induction period. This role is probably nonspecific because both normal UCs in vivo and tumour cells in vitro appeared to be injured. As suggested by results obtained from a limited number of patients, a high number of eosinophils in the urine may indicate therapy failure.

Objectives: Nomograms are statistical models designed to maximize predictive accuracy. We have tested the statistical correlation between the predictions of International Bladder Cancer Nomogram Consortium and the clinical outcomes in a multicenter Italian cohort of patients treated with radical cystectomy (RC) and pelvic lymph-nodes dissection. Methods and materials: Two hundred four patients who underwent RC were selected for multiple variable and then enrolled in the study. Patients were tested by the "online tool" based on the nomogram, then stratified and risk grouped for 5-year predicted disease-free survival (pDFS): low risk (67%-100%), intermediate risk (34%-66%), and high risk group (0%-33%). Receiving operating characteristic curve (ROC) quantified the area under curve (AUC) as predictive accuracy. Actual overall survival (aOS) and actual disease-free survival (aDFS) were calculated with Kaplan-Meyer analysis. Median of pDFS was compared with 5-year aDFS. Results: AUC was 0.69 (P < 0.001). The aOS is 50% (95% confidence interval (95% Cl, -7.68/+8.23) at 5-years after RC, the aDFS is 65.5% (95% Cl, -7.56/+8.98). The 5-year aDFS is 75.3% (-8.82/+12.53) in low risk group; 67.3% (-12/+16.4) in intermediate risk group; 28.3% (-20/+17.2) in high risk group. The 5-year aDFS was well calculated by the nomogram but in all groups the nomogram slightly underestimated the prediction. In intermediate risk group, 5-year aDFS overscored both the nomogram pDFS and the pDFS range of this group (34%-66%). In all patients investigated, the pDFS was 65%, a value close to the 5-year aDFS found (65.6%). Conclusion: Statistical correlation between postoperative nomogram prediction and the clinical reality was observed. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Inc.

BACKGROUND The objective of the current study was to identify independent clinical and pathologic variables that were predictive of lymph node involvement in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the penis in a multicenter series with the intent to select patients who were suitable to undergo immediate inguinal lymphadenectomy. METHODS Data were analyzed from 175 patients who underwent surgery for penile carcinoma in 11 urologic centers participating in the Gruppo Uro-Oncologico del Nord-Est (Northeast Uro-Oncological Group) Penile Cancer Data Base. Pathologically positive lymph nodes were defined as the presence of histologically confirmed lymph node metastasis in patients who underwent either immediate or delayed inguinal and/or pelvic lymphadenectomy. Patients who had clinically positive lymph nodes with cytologically positive fine-needle aspiration results and who had not undergone lymphadenectomy were censored. RESULTS Overall, lymph-node involvement was observed in 71 of 175 patients (40.6%) included in the analyses. After analyzing the whole group of patients, the following variables were identified as independent predictors of pathologic lymph node metastasis: clinical lymph node status, pathologic stage of the primary tumor, venous and lymphatic embolizations, and histologic grade. In the subgroup of patients with clinically negative lymph nodes, tumor thickness, histologic grade, lymphatic and venous embolizations, infiltration of both corpus spongiosum and urethra, and pathologic stage of the primary tumor (according to the 1997 TNM classification system) were predictive of lymph node involvement on univariate analysis. The generated logistic regression model showed that venous and/or lymphatic embolizations and infiltration of the corpus spongiosum and/or urethra were independent predictors of pathologic lymph node metastasis in patients with clinically negative lymph nodes. CONCLUSIONS Venous and/or lymphatic embolizations played relevant roles as predictors of pathologic lymph node involvement in patients with penile neoplasia and should be considered important parameters in determining which patients with clinically negative lymph nodes should undergo immediate lymphadenectomy. Background: Partial nephrectomy (PN) for complex renal masses has a non-negligible risk of perioperative complications. Furthermore, late functional and oncological outcomes of patients submitted to these challenging surgeries still remain to be determined. Objectives: To report the perioperative and mid-term oncological and functional outcomes of PN for complex masses (Preoperative Aspects and Dimensions Used for an Anatomical [PADUA] score ≥ 10) in a large multicenter prospective observational study. Design, setting, and participants: We prospectively evaluated patients treated with PN for complex renal tumors at 26 urological centers (Registry of Conservative and Radical Surgery for Cortical Renal Tumor Disease [RECORD2] project). Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: Multivariate logistic regression analyses explored the predictors of surgical complications. Multivariable Cox regression analyses estimated the hazard of renal function loss and disease recurrence. Kaplan-Meier estimates assessed the probability of survival. Results and limitations: In total, 410 patients who underwent PN for complex masses were evaluated. Clinical T1b and T2 tumors accounted for 43.2% and 9.8% of the cases. Overall, 45.9%, 18.8%, and 35.4% of patients underwent open, laparoscopic, and robotic PN, respectively. Intraoperative complications occurred in 15 (3.6%) patients, while postoperative surgical complications were recorded in 76 (18.5%) patients. At multivariable analysis, preoperative hemoglobin (odds ratio [OR]: 0.67; p < 0.001) and open (OR: 3.91; p < 0.001) versus robotic surgical approach were found to be the only predictors of surgical complications. An estimated glomerular filtration rate drop of >25% from baseline was observed in 30.2% and 17.6% of patients at 1st month and 2 yr after surgery, respectively. Two-year recurrence-free survival was 97.1%; positive surgical margins (hazard ratio [HR]: 3.35; p = 0.009), nucleolar grading (HR: 5.61; p < 0.001), and tumor stage (HR: 2.62; p = 0.05) were associated with recurrence. Conclusions: In a large series, PN for complex renal masses was a safe technique with an acceptable rate of perioperative complications and excellent mid-term oncological and functional results. Patient summary: In this study, we evaluated peri- and postoperative outcomes of patients treated with partial nephrectomy for complex renal masses. Open surgery was associated with higher complications than the robotic approach. Some histological features were found to be associated with disease recurrence.

Background Aim of this study was to evaluate and compare perioperative outcomes of transperitoneal (TP) and retroperitoneal (TR) approaches in a multi-institutional cohort of minimally invasive partial nephrectomy (MI-PN). Material and methods All consecutive patients undergone MI-PN for clinical T1 renal tumors at 26 Italian centers (RECORd2 project) between 01/2013 and 12/2016 were evaluated, collecting the pre-, intra-, and postoperative data. The patients were then stratified according to the surgical approach, TP or RP. A 1:1 propensity score (PS) matching was performed to obtain homogeneous cohorts, considering the age, gender, baseline eGFR, surgical indication, clinical diameter, and PADUA score. Results 1669 patients treated with MI-PN were included in the study, 1256 and 413 undergoing TP and RP, respectively. After 1:1 PS matching according to the surgical access, 413 patients were selected from TP group to be compared with the 413 RP patients. Concerning intraoperative variables, no differences were found between the two groups in terms of surgical approach (lap/robot), extirpative technique (enucleation vs standard PN), hilar clamping, and ischemia time. Conversely, the TP group recorded a shorter median operative time in comparison with the RP group (115 vs 150 min), with a higher occurrence of intraoperative overall, 21 (5.0%) vs 9 (2.1%); p = 0.03, and surgical complications, 18 (4.3%) vs 7 (1.7%); p = 0.04. Concerning postoperative variables, the two groups resulted comparable in terms of complications, positive surgical margins and renal function, even if the RP group recorded a shorter median drainage duration and hospital length of stay (3 vs 2 for both variables), p Conclusions The results of this study suggest that both TP and RP are feasible approaches when performing MI-PN, irrespectively from tumor location or surgical complexity. Notwithstanding longer operative times, RP seems to have a slighter intraoperative complication rate with earlier postoperative recovery when compared with TP.

PURPOSE: to evaluate clinical predictors of positive surgical margins (PSMs) in a large multicenter prospective observational study and to develop a clinic nomogram to predict the likelihood of PSMs after partial nephrectomy (PN). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 4308 patients who had surgical treatment for renal tumors between January 2013 and December 2016 at 26 urological Italian Centers (RECORd 2 project). Two multivariable logistic models were evaluated to predict the likelihood of PSMs. Center caseload was dichotomized using a visual assessment adjusted for several predictors of PSMs. A nomogram predicting PSMs was developed. RESULTS: Overall, 2076 patients treated with PN were evaluated. pT1a, pT1b, pT2 and pT3a were recorded in 68.7%, 22.6%, 2.1% and 6.6% of the patients, respectively. PSMs were recorded in 342 (16.5%) patients. From a null multivariable model against number of PN/year, 60 PN/year were identified as the best cut-off to define a high-volume centre. Background: Robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) is increasingly adopted for the treatment of localized renal tumors; however, rates and predictors of significant renal function (RF) loss after RAPN are still poorly investigated, especially at a long-term evaluation. Objective: To analyze the predictive factors and develop a clinical nomogram for predicting the likelihood of ultimate RF loss after RAPN. Design, setting, and participants: We prospectively evaluated all patients treated with RAPN in a multicenter series (RECORd2 project). Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: Significant RF loss was defined as >25% reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from preoperative assessment at 48th month follow-up after surgery. Uni- and multivariable logistic regression analyses for RF loss were performed. The area under the receiving operator characteristic curve (AUC) was used to quantify predictive discrimination. A nomogram was created from the multivariable model. Results and limitations: A total of 981 patients were included. The median age at surgery was 64.2 (interquartile range [IQR] 54.3–71.4) yr, and 62.4% of patients were male. The median Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) was 1 (IQR 0–2), 12.9% of patients suffered from diabetes mellitus, and 18.6% of patients showed peripheral vascular disease (PVD). The median Preoperative Aspects and Dimensions Used for an Anatomical (PADUA) score was 7 (IQR 7–9). Imperative indications to partial nephrectomy were present in 3.6% of patients. Significant RF loss at 48th month postoperative evaluation was registered in 108 (11%) patients. At multivariable analysis, age (p = 0.04), female gender (p < 0.0001), CCI (p < 0.0001), CCI (p < 0.0001), diabetes (p < 0.0001), PVD (p < 0.0001), eGFR (p = 0.02), imperative (p = 0.001) surgical indication, and PADUA score (p < 0.0001) were found to be predictors of RF loss. The developed nomogram including these variables showed an AUC of 0.816. Conclusions: We developed a clinical nomogram for the prediction of late RF loss after RAPN using preoperative and surgical variables from a large multicenter dataset. Patient summary: We developed a nomogram that could represent a clinical tool for early detection of patients at the highest risk of significant renal function impairment after robotic conservative surgery for renal tumors.

Introduction Women undergoing radical cystectomy (RC) followed by urinary diversion (UD) for bladder cancer experience a substantial reduction in health-related quality of life (HRQOL). At present, studies comparing long-term QOL outcomes for different UD methods, needed to inform evidence-based choices of bladder reconstruction for female patients, are sparse. Our objective was to compare two common UD methods in terms of their HRQOL outcomes in women. Materials and methods We retrospectively analysed HRQOL in 73 consecutive female bladder cancer patients having undergone orthotopic ileal neobladder (IONB, N = 24) or ileal conduit (IC, N = 49) following RC between 2007 and 2013 in six Italian academic urological centres. Patients had no evidence of tumour recurrence and were actively followed up. Validated Italian versions of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) generic (QLQ-C30) and bladder-cancer-specific (QLQ-BLM30) questionnaires were used to evaluate HRQOL. Results Patients in the IONB group were significantly younger than those in the IC group (median age: 67 and 73 years, respectively, p = 0.02). Barring that, the two groups did not present statistically significant differences in median length of follow-up (43 vs 54 months), pathological stage, grading of the neoplasm, or adjuvant chemo - or radiotherapy. No significant differences in QOL were found between the groups, with the exception of financial difficulties, affecting IONB patients significantly more than IC patients (mean score on a scale of 0–100: 33.3 ± 29.5 vs 18.4 ± 19.3, respectively; p = 0.05). Conclusion Financial difficulties was the only HRQOL item to differ between the two UD groups.

Introduction: From the most recent systematic revision of the literature, an orthotopic neobladder would seem to show marginally better health related quality of life (HR-QoL) scores compared with an ileal conduit. The aim of this study was to review all relevant published studies about the comparison between ileal orthotopic neobladder (IONB) and ileal conduit using validated HR-QoL questionnaires. Materials and Methods: Studies were identified by searching multiple literature databases. Data were synthesized using meta-analytic methods conformed to the PRISMA statement. Results: The literature search identified 10 papers; pooled effect sizes of combined quality of life outcomes for ileal conduit versus IONB showed a significantly better HR-QoL in patients with IONB (Hedges' g = 0.278; p = 0.000);. The present study has an important limitation due to the type of the analyzed comparative studies, all retrospective and not randomized. Conclusion: This meta-analysis of not-randomized, retrospective comparative studies on the impact of ileal conduit versus IONB on HR-QoL showed a significant advantage of IONB subgroups.

Objectives: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) propagation into the inferior vena cava is rare (10-25%) and is described as an extension above the hepatic veins up to the right atrium or even into the right ventricle. Venous tumour invasion is associated with several prognostic factors such as local infiltration of perinephric tissue, lymph nodes metastases, caval infiltration, and the presence of distant metastases. We reviewed our experience with surgical treatment of RCC with vena cava involvement. Methods: We analysed the Urological Genoa School results from 1970 to 1985 on 28 consecutive cases (Giuliani's series) and between 1986 and 2005 on 59 of 81 cases from three Italian urologic academic centres (Trieste, Bologna, and Genoa). Results: For 1970-1985, the overall survival rate for all patients was 30% at follow-up periods of 36-66 mo. With caval infiltration, the overall survival rate at 12 mo was 0%. For the period 1986-2005, the overall survival rate at 8 yr was about 80%. Nonsignificant differences for nodal stage and caval infiltration were observed during the two time periods. Conclusions: Our data confirm, as reported by others, that nonmetastatic RCC with extension into vena cava is potentially curable. © 2006 European Association of Urology.

Objective The surgical management of the absence of the vagina is a complex problem and constitutes a significant technical challenge. Herein we present our successful experience with vaginal reconstruction by the use of a modified ileal segment according to the Monti principle. Methods Six patients aged from 23 to 41 years (mean 33 years) were referred to our institution for vaginal stenosis. In our series, ileum has been used to create the neovagina: the isolated segment has been longitudinally detubularized and transversally retubularized in order to configure the roof of the neovagina. Results The mean operating time was 220min. No intra-operative complication occurred. The mean follow-up of this series was 16 months. At the latest follow-up, all patients had patent moist neovaginas, but excessive vaginal mucous was not a problem in any patient in our series. Conclusions Neovaginal creation using isolated ileal segments according to the Monti channel principle provide excellent tissue for vaginal replacement, providing excellent patient satisfaction and relatively low morbidity. Cosmetic, functional and anatomical results were encouraging. In our opinion our technique may be indicated for all cases of vaginal absence: congenital abnormalities in the pediatric population, vaginal stenosis after treatment of pelvic tumors, severe vaginal scarring secondary to chronic inflammatory disease or in case of secondary correction after failure gender surgery.

The aim of this article is to describe the current ultrasound (US) contrast agents employed in the characterization of renal tumors and to report our experience in the use of a contrast-specific ultrasound technique pulse inversion harmonic imaging (PIHI).A total of 23 renal masses were prospectively evaluated by conventional US, CDUS, PIHI and finally by helical-CT (HCT). The study was performed using a wideband convex array 2-5 MHz transducer and a US digital apparatus . PIHI scanning of each renal mass was performed before and after the injection of Levovist. To reach a definitive diagnosis HCT and/or histological findings were considered as the reference procedures. Eleven solid renal cell carcinomas (RCCs), one embryonal metanephric adenoma (EMA), seven angiomyolipomas (AMLs), and four cystic RCCs were analyzed. Solid RCCs revealed a higher contrast enhancement than AMLs with a typical pattern on conventional US. The EMA and AML with an atypical pattern revealed intense contrast enhancement during the arterial phase, progressively decreasing during the delayed phase. Cystic RCCs showed intense contrast enhancement on the peripheral thick wall during the arterial phase decreasing during the delayed phase. PIHI with Levovist may differentiate solid RCCs from AMLs with no hypervascular pattern while solid RCCs show a higher intensity of contrast enhancement than hypervascular AML.

Background The ileal orthotopic neobladder (IONB) is often used in patients undergoing radical cystectomy. The IONB allows to void avoiding the disadvantages of the external urinary diversion. In IONB patients the quality of life (QoL) appears compromised by the need to urinate voluntarily. The patients need to wake up at night interrupting the sleep-wake rhythm with consequences on social and emotional life. At present the QoL in IONB patients is evaluated by generic questionnaires. These are useful when IONB patients are compared with patients with different urinary diversions but they are less effective when only IONB patients are evaluated. To address this problem a specific questionnaire—the IONB-PRO—was developed. Methods A) Based on a conceptual framework, narrative-based interviews were conducted on 35 IONB patients. A basic pool of 43 items was produced and organized throughout two clinical and four QoL dimensions. An additional 15 IONB patients were interviewed for face validity testing. B) Psychometric testing was conducted on 145 IONB patients. Both classic test strategy and Rasch analysis were applied. Psychometric properties of the resulting scales were comparatively tested against other QoL-validated scales. Results The IONB-PRO questionnaire includes two sections: one on the QoL and a second section on the capability of the patient to manage the IONB. For evaluation of the QoL, three versions were delivered: 1) a basic 23-item QoL version (3 domains 23-items; alpha 0.86÷ 9.69), 2) a short-form 12-item QoL scale (alpha = 0.947), and 3) a short-form 15-item Rasch QoL scale (alpha = 0.967). Correlations of the long version scales with the corresponding dimensions of the EORTC-QLQ C30 and the EORTC-BLM30 were significant. The short forms exhibited significant correlations with the global health dimension of the EORTC-QLQ and with the urinary subscales of the EORTC-BLM30. The effect size was approximately 1.00 between patients at the 1-year follow-up period and those with 3, 5, and > 5-year follow-up periods for all scales. No relevant differences were observed between the 12-item short-form and the Rasch scale. Conclusions The IONB-PRO long and short-forms demonstrated a high level of internal consistency and reliability with an excellent discriminanting validity.
