There has been an increasing relevance of the cultural sector in the economic and social development of different countries. However, this sector continues without much input from multi-criteria decision-making (MDCM) techniques and sustainability analysis, which are widely used in other sectors. This paper proposes an MCDM model to assess the sustainability of a musical institution&rsquo, s program. To define the parameters of the proposed model, qualitative interviews with relevant representatives of Catalan cultural institutions and highly recognized professionals in the sector were performed. The content of the 2015&ndash, 2016 season of the &lsquo, Palau de la M&uacute, sica Catalana&rsquo, a relevant Catalan musical institution located in Barcelona, was used as a case study to empirically test the method. The method allows the calculation of a season value index (SVI), which serves to make more sustainable decisions on musical season programs according to the established criteria. The sensitivity analysis carried out for different scenarios shows the robustness of the method. The research suggests that more complex decision settings, such as MCDM methods that are widely used in other sectors, can be easily applied to the sustainable management of any type of cultural institution. To the best of the authors&rsquo, knowledge, this method was never applied to a cultural institution and with real data.

In order to create better decisions for business analytics, organizations increasingly use external structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data in addition to the (mostly structured) internal data. Current Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) tools are not suitable for this “open world scenario” because they do not consider semantic issues in the integration processing. Current ETL tools neither support processing semantic data nor create a semantic Data Warehouse (DW), a repository of semantically integrated data. This paper describes our programmable Semantic ETL (SETL) framework. SETL builds on Semantic Web (SW) standards and tools and supports developers by offering a number of powerful modules, classes, and methods for (dimensional and semantic) DW constructs and tasks. Thus it supports semantic data sources in addition to traditional data sources, semantic integration, and creating or publishing a semantic (multidimensional) DW in terms of a knowledge base. A comprehensive experimental evaluation comparing SETL to a solution made with traditional tools (requiring much more hand-coding) on a concrete use case, shows that SETL provides better programmer productivity, knowledge base quality, and performance.

The use of family information is a key issue to deal with inheritance illnesses. This kind of information use to come in the form of pedigree files, which contain structured information as tree or graphs, which explains the family relationships. Knowledge-based systems should incorporate the information gathered by pedigree tools to assess medical decision making. In this paper, we propose a method to achieve such a goal, which consists on the definition of new indicators, and methods and rules to compute them from family trees. The method is illustrated with several case studies. We provide information about its implementation and integration on a case-based reasoning tool. The method has been experimentally tested with breast cancer diagnosis data. The results show the feasibility of our methodology.

The complexity of Business Intelligence activities has driven the proposal of several approaches for the effective modeling of Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) processes, based on the conceptual abstraction of their operations. Apart from fostering automation and maintainability, such modeling also provides the building blocks to identify and represent frequently recurring patterns. Despite some existing work on classifying ETL components and functionality archetypes, the issue of systematically mining such patterns and their connection to quality attributes such as performance has not yet been addressed. In this work, we propose a methodology for the identification of ETL structural patterns. We logically model the ETL workflows using labeled graphs and employ graph algorithms to identify candidate patterns and to recognize them on different workflows. We showcase our approach through a use case that is applied on implemented ETL processes from the TPC-DI specification and we present mined ETL patterns. Decomposing ETL processes to identified patterns, our approach provides a stepping stone for the automatic translation of ETL logical models to their conceptual representation and to generate fine-grained cost models at the granularity level of patterns.

Neuro-oncologists must ultimately rely on their acquired knowledge and accumulated experience to undertake the sensitive task of brain tumour diagnosis. This task strongly depends on indirect, non-invasive measurements, which are the source of valuable data in the form of signals and images. Expert radiologists should benefit from their use as part of an at least partially automated computer-based medical decision support system. This paper focuses on Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy signal analysis and illustrates a method that combines Gaussian Decomposition, dimensionality reduction by Moving Window with Variance Analysis and classification using adaptively regularized Artificial Neural Networks. The method yields encouraging results in the task of binary classification of human brain tumours, even for tumour types that have seldom been analyzed from this viewpoint.

Nowadays, a huge amount of high resolution satellite images are freely available. Such images allow researchers in environmental sciences to study the different natural habitats and farming practices in a remote way. However, satellite images content strongly depends on the season of the acquisition. Due to the periodicity of natural and agricultural dynamics throughout seasons, sequential patterns arise as a new opportunity to model the behaviour of these environments. In this paper, we describe some preliminary results obtained with a new framework for studying spatiotemporal evolutions over natural and agricultural areas using k-partite graphs and sequential patterns extracted from segmented Landsat images.

The ever-growing amount of data requires highly scalable storage solutions. The most flexible approach is to use storage pools that can be expanded and scaled down by adding or removing storage devices. To make this approach usable, it is necessary to provide a solution to locate data items in such a dynamic environment. This paper presents and evaluates the Random Slicing strategy, which incorporates lessons learned from table-based, rule-based, and pseudo-randomized hashing strategies and is able to provide a simple and efficient strategy that scales up to handle exascale data. Random Slicing keeps a small table with information about previous storage system insert and remove operations, drastically reducing the required amount of randomness while delivering a perfect load distribution.

This paper describes the methodology and solution to automate and monitor a sewage treatment plant from an industry dedicated to the manufacture of wood panels. The control system designed, not only governs all elements of performance of the plant, but also oversees its proper functioning. It also has a human-machine interface with a daily working and emergency program, accompanied by an information system supported by records and alarms to facilitate human decisions making if were necessary. The proposed solution, not only increases the reliability and safety of the process with respect to plants or other type semi-automatic operation, but also reduces costs by improving process efficiency and minimizes costs in maintenance and monitoring.

The paper focuses on taking advantage of large amounts of data that are systematically stored in plants (by means of SCADA systems), but not exploited enough in order to achieve supervisory goals (fault detection, diagnosis and reconfiguration). The methodology of case base reasoning (CBR) is proposed to perform supervisory tasks in industrial processes by re-using the stored data. The goal is to take advantage of experiences, registered in a suitable structure as cam, avoiding the tedious task of knowledge acquisition and representation needed by other reasoning techniques as expert systems. An outlook of CBR terminology and basic concepts are presented. The adaptation of CBR in performing expert supervisory tasks, taking into account the particularities and difficulties derived from dynamic systems, is discussed. A special interest is focused in proposing a general case definition suitable for supervisory tasks. Finally, this structure and the whole methodology is tested in a application example for monitoring a real drier chamber.

We propose a system that makes use of motion detection, person tracking, face identification, feature-based identification, audio-based localization, and audio-based identification modules, fusing information with particle filters to obtain robust localization and identification. The data streams are processed with the help of the generic client-server middleware SmartFlow, resulting in a flexible architecture that runs across different platforms.

This paper surveys the most relevant research on combining Data Warehouse (DW) and Web data. It studies the XML technologies that are currently being used to integrate, store, query, and retrieve Web data and their application to DWs. The paper reviews different DW distributed architectures and the use of XML languages as an integration tool in these systems. It also introduces the problem of dealing with semistructured data in a DW. It studies Web data repositories, the design of multidimensional databases for XML data sources, and the XML extensions of OnLine Analytical Processing techniques. The paper addresses the application of information retrieval technology in a DW to exploit text-rich document collections. The authors hope that the paper will help to discover the main limitations and opportunities that offer the combination of the DW and the Web fields, as well as to identify open research lines

Consumer reviews, opinions and shared experiences in the use of a product is a powerful source of information about consumer preferences that can be used in recommender systems. Despite the importance and value of such information, there is no comprehensive mechanism that formalizes the opinions selection and retrieval process and the utilization of retrieved opinions due to the difficulty of extracting information from text data. In this paper, a new recommender system that is built on consumer product reviews is proposed. A prioritizing mechanism is developed for the system. The proposed approach is illustrated using the case study of a recommender system for digital cameras.

Expert supervision systems are software applications specially designed to automate process monitoring. The goal is to reduce the dependency on human operators to assure the correct operation of a process including faulty situations. Construction of this kind of application involves an important task of design and development in order to represent and to manipulate process data and behaviour at different degrees of abstraction for interfacing with data acquisition systems connected to the process. This is an open problem that becomes more complex with the number of variables, parameters and relations to account for the complexity of the process. Multiple specialised modules tuned to solve simpler tasks that operate under a co-ordination provide a solution. A modular architecture based on concepts of software agents, taking advantage of the integration of diverse knowledge-based techniques, is proposed for this purpose. The components (software agents, communication mechanisms and perception/action mechanisms) are based on ICa (Intelligent Control architecture), software middleware supporting the build-up of applications with software agent features.

Supervisory systems evolution makes the obtaining of significant information from processes more important in the way that the supervision systems' particular tasks are simplified. So, having signal treatment tools capable of obtaining elaborate information from the process data is important. In this paper, a tool that obtains qualitative data about the trends and oscillation of signals is presented. An application of this tool is presented as well. In this case, the tool, implemented in a computer-aided control systems design (CACSD) environment, is used in order to give to an expert system for fault detection in a laboratory plant.

Process supervision is the activity focused on monitoring the process operation in order to deduce conditions to maintain the normality including when faults are present Depending on the number/distribution/heterogeneity of variables, behaviour situations, sub-processes, etc. from processes, human operators and engineers do not easily manipulate the information. This leads to the necessity of automation of supervision activities. Nevertheless, the difficulty to deal with the information complicates the design and development of software applications. We present an approach called "integrated supervision systems". It proposes multiple supervisors coordination to supervise multiple sub-processes whose interactions permit one to supervise the global process.

A great deal of investigations are being carried out towards the effective implementation of the 4.0 Industry new paradigm. Indeed, most of the machinery involved in industrial processes are intended to be digitalized aiming to obtain enhanced information to be used for an optimized operation of the whole manufacturing process. In this regard, condition monitoring strategies are being also reconsidered to include improved performances and functionalities. Thus, the contribution of this research work lies in the proposal of an incremental learning framework approach applied to the condition monitoring of electromechanical systems. The proposed strategy is divided in three main steps, first, different available physical magnitudes are characterized through the calculation of a set of statistical-time based features. Second, a modelling of the considered conditions is performed by means of self-organizing maps in order to preserve the topology of the data; and finally, a novelty detection is carried out by a comparison among the quantization error value achieved in the data modelling for each of the considered conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed novelty fault identification condition monitoring methodology is proved by means of the evaluation of a complete experimental database acquired during the continuous working conditions of an electromechanical system. © 2018 IEEE.

We rethink and extend the concepts of position and role in a network, basing them on various well-known measures that were not previously associated with these concepts, such as geodesic distance and modularity. The effectiveness of our new role and position detection algorithms is evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively, on synthetic and real data, showing that we can identify new types of meaningful patterns in networks.
