BACKGROUND: Obesity, common condition among patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), contributes to illness severity during hospitalization. To date, knowledge on the prevalence, risk of hospital and intensive care units (ICU) admissions and mortality is limited. Therefore, systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using a preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guideline. AIM: The study aimed to address the prevalence, risk of hospital and ICU admissions and mortality among patients with COVID-19 and obesity. METHODS: The Newcastle–Ottawa scale was used to assess the quality of a study. Primary outcomes were the prevalence and risk of hospitalization, and secondary outcomes were the risk of ICU admissions and mortality risk. Mantel–Haenszel with random effects was applied, and the effect measure was odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: Nine studies were included in the systematic review, and only four studies for meta-analysis. Among 29,776 patients with COVID-19, obesity was identified as the second-highest comorbidity. The prevalence rates of obesity and severe obesity among patients with COVID-19 were 26.1% and 15.5%, respectively. Obesity resulted in significantly increased risk of hospital admission (OR = 1.99, 95% CI = 1.12–3.53, p = 0.02) and ICU admission (OR = 1.77, 95% = CI 1.52–2.06, p < 0.00001). Severe obesity had a significantly increased risk of ICU admission (OR = 1.79, 95% CI = 1.42–2.25, p < 0.00001). The mortality rate of patients with COVID-19 and obesity was about 30.5% (438/1,434), and 19.7% (2,777/14,095) of them recovered from COVID-19. CONCLUSION: Obesity poses as nearly twice the risk of hospital and ICU admissions, and severe obesity contributes to almost twice the risk of ICU admissions.

Purpose This study was aimed toward developing a lightweight assisting tenodesis-induced-grip exoskeleton robot (TIGER) and to examine the performance of the TIGER in stroke patients with hemiplegia. Methods This was a single-blinded, randomized control trial with pre-treatment, immediate post-treatment, and 12-week follow-up assessments. Thirty-four stroke patients were recruited and randomized to either an experimental or control group, where each participant in both groups underwent 40 min of training. In addition to a 20-min bout of regular task-specific motor training, each participant in the experimental group received 20 min of TIGER training, and the controls received 20 min of traditional occupational therapy in each treatment session. Primary outcomes based on the Fugl-Meyer Motor Assessment of Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) were recorded. Results Thirty-two patients (94.1%) completed the study: 17 and 15 patients in the experimental and control groups, respectively. Significant beneficial effects were found on the total score (ANCOVA, p = 0.006), the wrist score (ANCOVA, p = 0.037), and the hand score (ANCOVA, p = 0.006) for the FMA-UE in the immediate post-treatment assessment of the participants receiving the TIGER training. Conclusion The TIGER has beneficial effects on remediating upper limb impairments in chronic stroke patients. Summary An important goal of clinical genomics is to be able to estimate the risk of adverse disease outcomes. Between 5% and 10% of individuals with ulcerative colitis (UC) require colectomy within 5 years of diagnosis, but polygenic risk scores (PRSs) utilizing findings from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) are unable to provide meaningful prediction of this adverse status. By contrast, in Crohn disease, gene expression profiling of GWAS-significant genes does provide some stratification of risk of progression to complicated disease in the form of a transcriptional risk score (TRS). Here, we demonstrate that a measured TRS based on bulk rectal gene expression in the PROTECT inception cohort study has a positive predictive value approaching 50% for colectomy. Single-cell profiling demonstrates that the genes are active in multiple diverse cell types from both the epithelial and immune compartments. Expression quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis identifies genes with differential effects at baseline and week 52 follow-up, but for the most part, differential expression associated with colectomy risk is independent of local genetic regulation. Nevertheless, a predicted polygenic transcriptional risk score (PPTRS) derived by summation of transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS) effects identifies UC-affected individuals at 5-fold elevated risk of colectomy with data from the UK Biobank population cohort studies, independently replicated in an NIDDK-IBDGC dataset. Prediction of gene expression from relatively small transcriptome datasets can thus be used in conjunction with TWASs for stratification of risk of disease complications.

Background Mismatch negativity (MMN) reflects the functional integrity of sensory memory function. With the advantages of independence of individual's focused attention and behavioral cooperation, this neurophysiological signal is particularly suitable for investigating elderly with cognitive decline such as amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). However, the existing results remain substantially inconsistent whether these patients show deficits of MMN. In order to reconcile the previous disputes, the present study used magnetoencephalography combined with distributed source imaging methods to determine the source‐level magnetic mismatch negativity (MMNm) in aMCI. Methods A total of 26 healthy controls (HC) and 26 patients with aMCI underwent an auditory oddball paradigm during the MEG recordings. MMNm amplitudes and latencies in the bilateral superior temporal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, and inferior parietal lobule (IPL) were compared between HC and aMCI groups. The correlations of MMNm responses with performance of auditory/verbal memory tests were examined. Finally, MMNm and its combination with verbal/auditory memory tests were submitted to receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results Compared to HC, patients with aMCI showed significantly delayed MMNm latencies in the IPL. Among the patients with aMCI, longer MMNm latencies of left IPL were associated with lower scores of Chinese Version Verbal Learning Test (CVVLT). The ROC curve analysis revealed that the combination of MMNm latencies of left IPL and CVVLT scores yielded a moderate accuracy in the discrimination of aMCI from HC at an individual level. Conclusions Our data suggest dysfunctional MMNm in patients with aMCI, particularly in the IPL., This study uses MEG to compare source‐level magnetic mismatch negativity (MMNm) in healthy elderly and patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). Patients with aMCI show MMNm prolongation in the inferior parietal lobule, and such a deficit correlates with poorer verbal learning test.

Tendon injuries lead to tendon stiffness, which impairs skeletal muscle movement. Most studies have focused on patellar or Achilles tendons by using ultrasound elastography. Only a few studies have measured the stiffness of hand tendons because their thickness is only 1–2 mm, rendering clinical ultrasound elastography unsuitable for mapping hand tendon stiffness. In this study, a high-frequency ultrasound shear elastography (HFUSE) system was proposed to map the shear wave velocity (SWV) of hand flexor tendons. A handheld vibration system that was coaxially mounted with an external vibrator on a high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) array transducer allowed the operators to scan hand tendons freely. To quantify the performance of HFUSE, six parameters were comprehensively measured from homogeneous, two-sided, and three-sided gelatin phantom experiments: bias, precision, lateral resolution, contrast, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and accuracy. HFUSE demonstrated an excellent resolution of $147~\mu \text{m}$ to distinguish the local stiffness of thin phantom (thickness: 1.2 mm) without compromising bias, precision, contrast, CNR, and accuracy, which has been noted with previous systems. Human experiments involved four patients with hand tendon injuries who underwent ≥2 months of rehabilitation. Using HFUSE, two-dimensional SWV images of flexor tendons could be clearly mapped for healthy and injured tendons, respectively. The findings demonstrate that HFUSE can be a promising tool for evaluating the elastic properties of the injured hand tendon after surgery and during rehabilitation and thus help monitor progress.

Objective To investigate the effects of perturbation-based pinch task training on the sensorimotor performance of the upper extremities of patients with chronic stroke via a novel vibrotactile therapy system. Design A single-blinded randomized controlled trial. Setting A university hospital. Participants Patients with chronic stroke (N=19) randomly assigned into either an experimental group or a control group completed the study. Interventions In addition to 10 minutes of traditional sensorimotor facilitation, each participant in the experimental group received 20 minutes of perturbation-based pinch task training in each treatment session, and the controls received 20 minutes of task-specific motor training twice a week for 6 weeks. Main Outcome Measures The scores for the primary outcome, Semmes-Weinstein monofilament (SWM), and those for the secondary outcomes, Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), amount of use, quality of movement (QOM) on the Motor Activity Log (MAL) scale, and box and block test (BBT), were recorded. All outcome measures were recorded at pretreatment, post treatment, and 12-week follow-up. Results There were statistically significant between-group differences in the training-induced improvements revealed in the SWM results (P=.04) immediately after training and in the BBT results (P=.05) at the 12-week follow-up. The changes in muscle tone and in the QOM, SWM, and BBT scores indicated statistically significant improvements after 12 sessions of treatment for the experimental group. For the control group, a significant statistical improvement was found in the wrist (P Conclusions This study indicated that the perturbation-based pinch task training has beneficial effects on sensory restoration of the affected thumb in patients with chronic stroke.

We report 4 cases of neonatal sepsis caused by Streptococcus gallolyticus. The clinical course was quite similar to early-and late-onset group B streptococcus disease. None of the mothers had group B streptococcus (GBS) colonization on prenatal screening nor received intrapartum antibiotics. We proposed the sporadic distribution of S. gallolyticus sepsis among neonates was partly due to relatively low colonization rate in adults compared with GBS. Species determination of S. gallolyticus may not be available using conventional microbiological methods and may contribute to underestimation or misclassification. In our series, we highlighted the importance of S. gallolyticus as an important pathogen in neonatal sepsis deserving further surveillance.

“Real-world” data on the nationwide epidemiology and treatment patterns of multiple sclerosis (MS) is very scarce in Asia. This study is aim to evaluate the 10-years trends in epidemiology and treatment patterns of MS with Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Database (NHIRD). Patients aged 20 years or older and were newly diagnosed with MS between 2007 and 2016 were identified. The crude incidences of MS were presented annually and stratified by sex and age. Baseline characteristics and treatment patterns, particularly disease-modifying drugs (DMDs), were also analyzed. This study included 555 MS patients (mean age was 36.9 and 74.4% were female). The crude incidence rate of MS decreased slightly from 0.43 per 100,000 persons in 2007 to 0.24 per 100,000 persons in 2015. The female to male ratios remained mainly between 2 to 3. Approximately 80% of MS patients received initial DMDs, with interferon β-1a as the dominant one. Furthermore, 37.5% of MS patients received subsequent DMDs, with fingolimod being the most frequently used. The median times from diagnosis to initial and to subsequent DMDs were 77 and 1239 days, respectively. This nationwide study provides up-to-date and sophisticated estimates of MS epidemiology and treatment pattern in “real-world” setting in Taiwan.

Three-dimensional printed ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) have been used in stroke patients recently, but there was little evidence of gait improvement. Here, we designed a novel customized AFO with energy storage, named Energy-Storage 3D Printed Ankle-Foot Orthosis (ESP-AFO), and investigated its effects on gait improvement in stroke patients. 12 stroke survivors were recruited (9 females/3 males, age: 55.58 ± 5.9 y/o). Participants were instructed to walk (1) bare foot (BF), with (2) anterior AFO (AAFO), and with (3) ESP-AFO, respectively. Gait analysis by the motion capture system was performed bilaterally (SL: Sound limb; AL: Affected limb). Participant satisfaction and fatigue were also compared. We found that the ESP-AFO significantly increased bilateral gait velocity (SL: ESP-AFO 52.62 ± 19.18 cm/s, BF 47.61 ± 22.78 cm/s; AL: ESP-AFO 52.78 ± 19.57 cm/s, BF 47.31 ± 23.27 cm/s), stride length (SL: ESP-AFO 78.96 ± 19.16 cm, BF 74.89 ± 21.92 cm; AL: ESP-AFO 79.06 ± 17.82 cm, BF 74.08 ± 21.31 cm). ESP-AFO reversed drop-foot in swing phase and created a higher ankle moment at terminal stance. Patients also reported more satisfaction with the ESP-AFO (total satisfaction: ESP-AFO 4.3 ± 0.47, AAFO 3.3 ± 0.62). We demonstrated that the novel custom-made ESP-AFO improved the gait performance with better satisfaction than traditional AFOs did. (Registry number of clinical trial: A-BR-106-005)

Progenitor cells from adipose tissue are able to induce bone repair; however, inconsistent or unreliable efficacy has been reported across preclinical and clinical studies. Soluble inhibitory factors, such as the secreted Wnt signaling antagonists Dickkopf‐1 (DKK1), are expressed to variable degrees in human adipose‐derived stem cells (ASCs), and may represent a targetable “molecular brake” on ASC mediated bone repair. Here, anti‐DKK1 neutralizing antibodies were observed to increase the osteogenic differentiation of human ASCs in vitro, accompanied by increased canonical Wnt signaling. Human ASCs were next engrafted into a femoral segmental bone defect in NOD‐Scid mice, with animals subsequently treated with systemic anti‐DKK1 or isotype control during the repair process. Human ASCs alone induced significant but modest bone repair. However, systemic anti‐DKK1 induced an increase in human ASC engraftment and survival, an increase in vascular ingrowth, and ultimately improved bone repair outcomes. In summary, anti‐DKK1 can be used as a method to augment cell‐mediated bone regeneration, and could be particularly valuable in the contexts of impaired bone healing such as osteoporotic bone repair., Systemic anti‐DKK1 treatment promotes engrafted stem cell survival, induces vascular ingrowth, and catalyzes bone matrix deposition among human adipose stem cell (ASC) treated femoral segmental bone defects. Adenomyomatosis of the gall bladder (AMG), with its characteristic Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses, is a rare disease in children, and only 13 pediatric cases have been reported in the literature. An 8-year-old girl was diagnosed in our institute with symptomatic gall bladder adenomyomatosis and received cholecystectomy with uneventful postoperative course. The pediatric AMG should be regarded as a special type of AMG with different pathophysiology and natural course from those of the adults. Thus, the surgical indications of AMG in children should be considered meticulously to avoid unnecessary cholecystectomy..

Mirror therapy (MT) has been proposed as an essential component of upper limb neuro-rehabilitation, using mirror illusion of the unaffected hand movement and superimposing it on the affected hand to improve neuroplasticity for improving motor recovery in stroke patients. In this paper, we developed a virtual reality mirror therapy (VRMT) system, and examined the performance of the proposed VRMT system. The VRMT system consists of a motion-tracking device, a VR goggle, and a VRMT software. Young, healthy participants, and stroke patients with mild-to-severe hemiparesis were recruited in this study, to validate the effectiveness of the proposed VRMT system. Experimental results based on the pinch-holding-up activity (PHUA) test revealed a significant effect on the precision pinch performance of young-healthy participants receiving VRMT, whereas traditional MT could not improve the precision pinch performance in young-healthy participants (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, $Z= -2.693$ , $p=0.007$ ). For patients having suffered a stroke and being treated with VRMT, significant beneficial effects examined by mixed effect model were found on the total score of FMA ( $p=0.033$ ) and hand part of FMA ( $p=0.008$ ). The findings in this study indicate that the VRMT system has a potentially positive effects on the sensorimotor performance of hands in healthy participants. In addition, add-on effect of VR to MT provides beneficial effects on motor function of the upper extremity in chronic stroke patients.

Skin cancer is among the 10 most common cancers. Recent research revealed the superiority of artificial intelligence (AI) over dermatologists to diagnose skin cancer from predesignated and cropped images. However, there remain several uncertainties for AI in diagnosing skin cancers, including lack of testing for consistency, lack of pathological proof or ambiguous comparisons. Hence, to develop a reliable, feasible and user-friendly platform to facilitate the automatic diagnostic algorithm is important. The aim of this study was to build a light-weight skin cancer classification model based on deep learning methods for aiding first-line medical care. The developed model can be deployed on cloud platforms as well as mobile devices for remote diagnostic applications. We reviewed the medical records and clinical images of patients who received a histological diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, seborrheic keratosis and melanocytic nevus in 2006-2017 in the Department of Dermatology in Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (KCGMH). We used the deep learning models to identify skin cancers and benign skin tumors in the manner of binary classification and multi-class classification in the KCGMH and HAM10000 datasets to construct a skin cancer classification model. The accuracy reached 89.5% for the binary classifications (benign vs malignant) in the KCGMH dataset; the accuracy was 85.8% in the HAM10000 dataset in seven-class classification and 72.1% in the KCGMH dataset in five-class classification. Our results demonstrate that our skin cancer classification model based on deep learning methods is a highly promising aid for the clinical diagnosis and early identification of skin cancers and benign tumors.

Background: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is increasing in children. We aimed to compare the clinical characteristics between CDI and colonization and to identify the risk factors for severe diseases of CDI in children. Method: We retrospectively reviewed 124 children (1–18 years old) from 2011 to 2018. CDI was defined as diarrhea (≥3 loose stool in the past 24 h) with confirmed toxigenic strain. Colonization was defined as presence of C. difficile without clinical symptoms. Severe diseases included ileus, acute kidney injury, gastrointestinal bleeding or mortality. Patients younger than 1 year old and coinfections with other enteric pathogens were excluded. Results: Among 124 patients with C. difficile identified, 49 of them fulfilled CDI definition and 75 had C. difficile colonization. A high prevalence rate of macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MRMP) has been reported in Asia. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effect of macrolide resistance on the manifestations and clinical judgment during M. pneumoniae infections. We found no difference in clinical severity between MRMP and macrolide-sensitive Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MSMP) infections. However, in the pooled data, patients infected with MRMP had a longer febrile period (1.71 days), length of hospital stay (1.61 day), antibiotic drug courses (2.93 days), and defervescence time after macrolide treatment (2.04 days) compared with patients infected with MSMP. The risk of fever lasting for >48 hours after macrolide treatment was also significantly increased (OR 21.24), and an increased proportion of patients was changed to second-line treatment (OR 4.42). Our findings indicate diagnostic and therapeutic challenges after the emergence of MRMP. More precise diagnostic tools and clearly defined treatment should be appraised in the future.

This study aims toward an investigation and comparison of the digital force control and the brain activities of older adults and young groups during digital pressing tasks. A total of 15 young and 15 older adults were asked to perform force ramp tasks at different force levels with a custom pressing system. Near-infrared spectroscopy was used to collect the brain activities in the prefrontal cortex and primary motor area. The results showed that the force independence and hand function of the older adults were worse than that of the young adults. The cortical activations in the older adults were higher than those in the young group during the tasks. A significant hemodynamic between-group response and mild negative correlations between brain activation and force independence ability were found. Older adults showed poor force independence ability and manual dexterity and required additional brain activity to compensate for the degeneration.

Background Music-based interventions (MBI), using music as a therapeutic medium, has been utilized as a promising strategy for motor relearning and shaping. However, currently, MBI with active performance training is restricted to being extensively applied for patients with various levels of defects in fine motor skills and cognitive functions. Therefore, the integration of vibrotactile stimulation with MBI has been adopted as a motor training strategy intended to enhance motor learning through use of vibration stimuli. The current study was designed to investigate differences in the sensorimotor performance of older adults’ hands under baseline, a single session of active MBI, and vibrotactile-enriched MBI conditions. Methods Thirty healthy older adults were recruited and randomized to receive either the single session of 30-min of vibrotactile-enriched MBI or 30-min of active MBI at the beginning of the experiment. After a one-week washout period, they switched their treatment programs and then were assessed to study the training effects of both approaches through measuring precision pinch performance, hand function, and sensory status. Results The results of the Pinch-Holding-Up Activity test revealed a statistically significant difference in the FRpeak parameter (F = 14.37, p 2p = 0.507) under the vibrotactile-enriched MBI condition compared to the baseline and active MBI conditions. In addition, significant beneficial effects were found on the results of the barognosis (F = 19.126, p 2p = 0. 577) and roughness differentiation subtests (F = 15.036, p 2p = 0.518) in the Manual Tactile Test for the participants in the vibrotactile-enriched MBI group. In addition, the participants under both the active MBI and vibrotactile-enriched MBI conditions exhibited better performance in the three subtests of the Purdue Pegboard Test as compared to under the baseline condition (p Conclusions The findings indicated that vibrotactile-enriched MBI potentially improves the precision pinch performance of hands in healthy older adults. In addition, the add-on effect of vibrotactile stimulation to the MBI condition provides beneficial effects on the sensory functions of the upper extremities. Trial registration NCT04802564. The hazard of subsequent arterial embolism and thrombosis (SAET) in patients with lower leg fractures is not yet well demonstrated. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between lower leg fracture and SAET in Taiwan. A total of 134,844 patients with lower leg fractures (ICD-9-CM: 823) and chronological diagnosis as SAET (ICD-9-CM: 444.22) was matched (1:1) to the non-fracture cohort according to their propensity score (data coming from the National Health Insurance database between January 2000 to December 2012). Patients were matched by age, gender, and comorbidities. The incidence of SAET and correlation between SAET development and lower leg fracture was statistically analyzed, and subgroup analysis categorized by characteristics and comorbidities was conducted as well. The cumulative incidence of SAET was calculated by Kaplan–Meier analysis. Kaplan–Meier analysis plot showed that, by the end of the ten-year follow-up period, the cumulative incidence of SAET was significantly higher for the lower leg fracture cohort than for the non-fracture cohort (log-rank test: p &lt, 0.001). The lower leg fracture, male, elder age (45–64-year-old, ≥65-year-old), hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and gout were significantly associated with lower extremity SAET risk compared with the matched group. There was an inseparable correlation between the lower leg fracture group and the risks of SAET, subgroup analysis by gender (male, female), age (age &lt, 40 years, age 40–64 years, and age &gt, 65 years) and comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and gout) show compatible results as well. Patients with lower leg fracture have a significantly increased risk of SAET since then two years after the fracture. The hazard of SAET was significantly higher in patients with lower leg fracture than in the non-fracture cohort, and the high incidence was found since then two years after fracture. Further studies are warranted.

We report a 7-year-old girl who got Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection with prolonged fever. Macrolide was used on day 14 of illness but fever persisted with progressive lung consolidation. Oral prednisolone was administered on day 33 then fever subsided with dramatically clinical improvement (decreased CRP and resolution of lung consolidation). In this case, delayed effective antibiotic treatment with inflammation may be the major factor contributing to the fever rather than ongoing infection.

BackgroundNeuroimage literature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has a moderate-to-high risk of bias, partially because those combined with intellectual impairment (II) and/or minimally verbal (MV) status are generally ignored. We aimed to provide more comprehensive insights into white matter alterations of ASD, inclusive of individuals with II (ASD-II-Only) or MV expression (ASD-MV).MethodsSixty-five participants with ASD (ASD-Whole; 16.6±5.9 years; comprising 34 intellectually able youth, ASD-IA, and 31 intellectually impaired youth, ASD-II, including 24 ASD-II-Only plus 7 ASD-MV) and 38 demographic-matched typically developing controls (TDC; 17.3±5.6 years) were scanned in accelerated diffusion-weighted MRI. Fixel-based analysis was undertaken to investigate the categorical differences in fiber density (FD), fiber cross-section (FC), and a combined index (FDC), and brain-symptom/cognition associations.ResultsASD-Whole had reduced FD in the anterior and posterior corpus callosum and left cerebellum Crus I, and smaller FDC in right cerebellum Crus II, compared to TDC. ASD-II, relative to TDC, showed almost identical alterations to those from ASD-Whole vs. TDC. ASD-II-Only had greater FD/FDC in the isthmus-splenium of callosum than ASD-MV. Our results could be confounded by variable psychiatric comorbidities and psychotropic medication uses in our ASD participants recruited from outpatient clinics, which is nevertheless closer to a real-world presentation of ASD. The outcomes related to ASD-MV were considered preliminaries due to the small sample size within this subgroup.Finally, our study design did not include intellectual impairment-only participants without ASD to disentangle the mixture of autistic and intellectual symptoms.ConclusionsASD-associated white matter alterations appear driven by individuals with II and potentially further by MV. Results suggest that changes in the corpus callosum and cerebellum are key for psychopathology and cognition associated with ASD. Our work highlights an essential to include understudied sub-populations on the spectrum in research.

The trajectory prediction of traffic agents plays an important role regarding to the safety of autonomous driving. Structured by gate recurrent unit (GRU), this paper proposes a new predict model with the combination of trajectory mapping method. The experimental results show that the proposed model can feasibly predict the future trajectories of the surrounding traffic agents in a mixed flow including vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Background: Lockdown is an effective nonpharmaceutical intervention to reduce coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission, but it restricts daily activity. We aimed to investigate the impact of lockdown on pediatric body weight and body mass index (BMI). Methods: The systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) statement. Four online databases (EMBASE, Medline, the Cochrane Library and CINAHL) were searched. Results: The pooled results showed that lockdown was associated with significant body weight gain (MD 2.67, 95% CI 2.12–3.23, p &lt, 0.00001). The BMI of children with comorbidities or obesity did not change significantly. The BMI of general population was significantly higher during lockdown than before the pandemic (MD 0.94, 95% CI 0.32–1.56, p = 0.003). However, heterogeneity was high (I2 = 84%). Among changes in weight classification, increases in the rates of obesity (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.10–1.37, p = 0.0002) and overweight (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.06–1.29, p = 0.001) were reported. Conclusions: Our meta-analysis showed significant increases in body weight and BMI during lockdown among school-age children and adolescents. The prevalence of obesity and overweight also increased. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened the burden of childhood obesity.

Tele-rehabilitation has flourished in recent years. The aim of this study was to develop a remote rehabilitation program adapted to regional needs. Due to the high density of medical resources, people in Taiwan can easily and frequently enter has medical institutions. However, this has caused crowds in medical institutions and has affected the quality of rehabilitation for stroke survivors. Upper extremity impairments after a stroke result in functional limitations that impinge on the daily lives of stroke survivors. Task-oriented training (TOT) has been shown to improve recovery after a stroke. In this study, a tele-rehabilitation system, called TOT@home, was designed to enhance the quality of rehabilitation in clinics and facilitate home-based TOT training with remote monitoring.

BackgroundDiabetes self-care reminders are widely applied to improve self-care among diabetes patients. Unfortunately, there is a lack of self-care reminders for diabetes patients who live in rural areas of developing countries with limited resources.AimsThe study evaluated the feasibility of the Diabetes Self-Care Calendar as a reminder tool for self-care.MethodsThe study was conducted in a community health centre in Pekalongan Regency, Indonesia. The Diabetes Self-Care Calendar was developed as a reminder tool following the American Association of Diabetes Educator self-care guidelines. The feasibility of the calendar was evaluated using the quality assessment questionnaire that assessed accessibility, acceptability, effectiveness, efficiency and appropriateness. The participants’ qualitative feedback was organised into themes.ResultsA total of 10 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus participated in the study. The quality of the calendar was evaluated in terms of accessibility (m = 9.5; range = 0 – 10), acceptability (m = 9.7; range = 0 – 10), effectiveness (m = 9.3; range = 0 – 10), efficiency (m = 9; range = 0 – 10) and appropriateness (m = 9; range = 0 – 10). The feasibility of the calendar was m = 9.3 (range = 9 to 9.7). Three themes emerged based on the participants' qualitative feedback included family involvement, calendar portability and calendar design.ConclusionsThe findings suggest the Diabetes Self-Care Calendar is feasible as a reminder tool for type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who live in rural areas.

BACKGROUND/AIM Task-specific repetitive training, a usual care in occupational therapy practice, and robotic-aided rehabilitation with bilateral practice are used to improve upper limb motor and task performance. The difference in effects of two strategies requires exploration. This study compared the impact of robotic-assisted therapy with bilateral practice (RTBP) and usual task-specific training facilitated by therapists on task and motor performance for stroke survivors. METHODS Forty-three community-dwelling stroke survivors (20 males; 23 females; 53.3 ± 13.1 years; post-stroke duration 14.2 ± 10.9 months) were randomised into RTBP and usual care. All participants received a 10-minute per-protocol sensorimotor stimulation session prior to interventions as part of usual care. Primary outcome was different in the amount of use (AOU) and quality of movement (QOM) on the Motor Activity Log (MAL) scale at endpoint. Secondary outcomes were AOU and QOM scores at follow-up, and pre-post and follow-up score differences on the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and surface electromyography (sEMG). In this paper, we combined hyperspectral imaging techniques and deep neural networks (DNN) to detect Fusarium wilt on Phalaenopsis. Spectral angle mapper (SAM) and constrained energy minimization (CEM) were used to find abnormal areas. Band selection (BS) methods include Harsanyi-Farrand-Chang (HFC), band priority (BP) and band decorrelation (BD) were applied to get effective bands. The results showed that, on the fifth day of Phalaenopsis infection, the best accuracy rates for detecting Fusarium wilt using VNIR and SWIR hyperspectral imaging were 93.5% and 94.9%, respectively. In most cases, the accuracy of using DNN is better than using support vector machine (SVM).

Purposes This study aimed to understand the influence of health beliefs, demographic factors, and health characteristics on the intention to undergo Pap smear testing among women in rural areas of Indonesia. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted and 687 married women participated in the study. A convenience sampling was applied to recruit the participants from community health centres in a rural region in Indonesia. Self-reported data using the Health Beliefs Model Scale for Cervical Cancer and Pap Smear Test was collected to assess the health beliefs. Independent t-tests, simple logistic regressions, and a hierarchical logistic regression with 3 steps were run. Statistical significance for analysis was set at p, Plain language summary Cervical cancer is a leading cancer among women and a significant cause of mortality for females around the world, including Indonesia. Globally, the screening rate for cervical cancer among women in rural areas remains low. In Indonesia, the incidence and the mortality from cervical cancer remain high compared to other female cancers. The Indonesian government has offered a free Pap smear screening to women since 2014, but the screening rate is still low, around 28%. A total of 687 married women were included in the study. Approximately 80% of Indonesian women living in rural areas have never undergone a Pap smear test, and 60% of women reported a high intention of receiving a Pap smear test. Education, income, previous experience of Pap smear testing, a friend with a history of cervical cancer, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and health motivations were significantly associated with the intention of Pap smear testing. Low screening rates of cervical cancer and high intentions toward the cervical cancer screening exist among rural Indonesian women. Health beliefs significantly affect the women’s intention of Pap smear testing.

Background: This study formulated clinical guidelines for assessing nasogastric tube placement and for health education guidance according to evidence-based recommendations. Method: This study used a single group, pre- and postintervention design. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants from nursing institutions in Taiwan. Results: Sixty-two individuals in charge of nursing institutions were recruited to participate in the in-service training program. Statistically significant differences were observed in the four major items in the self-directed learning readiness scale ( t = 3.85, p < .00; t = 3.99, p < .00; t = 2.94, p < .01; t = 4.13, p < .00). With regard to program satisfaction, the mean score was 4.88 to 4.9 points. The mean score for teaching satisfaction was 4.94 to 4.9 points. Furthermore, the participants scored more than 80 points in the online course test and the nasogastric tube placement skill. Conclusion: The individuals in-charge are expected to be willing to apply and promote methods of literature collation and recommendation in their respective institutions. Nanopore sequencing platforms combined with supervised machine learning (ML) have been effective at detecting base modifications in DNA such as 5mC and 6mA. These ML-based nanopore callers have typically been trained on data that span all modifications on all possible DNA k-mer backgrounds—a complete training dataset. However, as nanopore technology is pushed to more and more epigenetic modifications, such complete training data will not be feasible to obtain. Nanopore calling has historically been performed with Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) that cannot make successful calls for k-mer contexts not seen during training because of their independent emission distributions. However, deep neural networks (DNNs), which share parameters across contexts, are increasingly being used as callers, often outperforming their HMM cousins. It stands to reason that a DNN approach should be able to better generalize to unseen k-mer contexts. Indeed, herein we demonstrate that a common DNN approach (DeepSignal) outperforms a common HMM approach (Nanopolish) in the incomplete data setting. Furthermore, we propose a novel hybrid HMM-DNN approach, Amortized-HMM, that outperforms both the pure HMM and DNN approaches on 5mC calling when the training data are incomplete. Such an approach is expected to be useful for calling 5hmC and combinations of cytosine modifications, where complete training data are not likely to be available.

Previous studies have demonstrated that outdoor temperature exposure was an important risk factor for respiratory diseases. However, no study investigates the effect of indoor temperature exposure on respiratory diseases and further assesses cumulative effect. The objective of this study is to study the cumulative effect of indoor temperature exposure on emergency department visits due to infectious (IRD) and non-infectious (NIRD) respiratory diseases among older adults. Subjects were collected from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database in Taiwan. The cumulative degree hours (CDHs) was used to assess the cumulative effect of indoor temperature exposure. A distributed lag nonlinear model with quasi-Poisson function was used to analyze the association between CDHs and emergency department visits due to IRD and NIRD. For IRD, there was a significant risk at 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31°C when the CDHs exceeded 69, 40, 14, 5, and 1 during the cooling season (May to October), respectively, and at 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23°C when the CDHs exceeded 8, 1, 1, 35, and 62 during the heating season (November to April), respectively. For NIRD, there was a significant risk at 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23°C when the CDHs exceeded 1, 1, 16, 36, and 52 during the heating season, respectively, the CDHs at 1 was only associated with the NIRD at 31°C during the cooling season. Our data also indicated that the CDHs was lower among men than women. We conclude that the cumulative effects of indoor temperature exposure should be considered to reduce IRD risk in both cooling and heating seasons and NIRD risk in heating season and the cumulative effect on different gender.

SUMMARYAn important goal of clinical genomics is to be able to estimate the risk of adverse disease outcomes. Between 5% and 10% of ulcerative colitis (UC) patients require colectomy within five years of diagnosis, but polygenic risk scores (PRS) utilizing findings from GWAS are unable to provide meaningful prediction of this adverse status. By contrast, in Crohn’s disease, gene expression profiling of GWAS-significant genes does provide some stratification of risk of progression to complicated disease in the form of a Transcriptional Risk Score (TRS). Here we demonstrate that both measured (TRS) and polygenic predicted gene expression (PPTRS) identify UC patients at 5-fold elevated risk of colectomy with data from the PROTECT clinical trial and UK Biobank population cohort studies, independently replicated in an NIDDK-IBDGC dataset. Prediction of gene expression from relatively small transcriptome datasets can thus be used in conjunction with transcriptome-wide association studies to stratify risk of disease complications.

Migraine is a common disease worldwide and migraine prevention is primarily currently based on pharmaceuticals. The mechanism of Vitamin B2 may positively contribute to migraine. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the impact of Vitamin B2 supplementation on the days, duration, frequency, and pain score of the migraine attack.: The PRISMA guideline was used for the studying process. Five electronic databases, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL, and CEPS were searched from 1990 to March 2019. The search terms were Vitamin B2, migraine, and prophylactic. A meta-analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) version.: Nine articles were included in systemic review and finally meta-analysis. Eight randomized controlled trials and one controlled clinical trial with 673 subjects were analyzed using meta-analysis. Vitamin B2 supplementation significantly decreased migraine days (A pooled analysis of available randomized controlled clinical trials demonstrated that Vitamin B2 400 mg/day for three months supplementation had significant effect on days, duration, frequency, and pain score of migraine attacks.

Background Comminuted intraarticular fractures of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MPJ) are difficult to treat. We evaluated the clinical outcomes of using a dynamic traction splint to treat comminuted intraarticular fracture of MPJ. Patients and methods We conducted a retrospective chart review on patients with comminuted intraarticular fracture of the MPJ treated with a dynamic traction splint at National Cheng Kung University Hospital between March 2014 and February 2018. The surgical procedures consisted of a transverse Kirschner wire insertion and treatment for concomitant injuries. The patients then received staged regular rehabilitation programs under a hand therapists' supervision for 14 weeks. Active range of motion (ROM) of injured digits, Visual Analog Scale score for pain, and return-to-work status were recorded to evaluate functional outcomes. Results A total of 10 patients were included. All were male patients and aged 8 to 66 years. The most common injury mechanism was motor vehicle accident (70%). The locations of fractures were 1 at the metacarpal head and 9 at the proximal phalangeal bases. Half of the fractures were open. Concomitant injuries were 1 digital nerve severance, 1 extensor tendon rupture, and 3 dorsal skin avulsions. There were no postoperative complications. The active ROM of the MPJ ranged from 40° to 90° with a median ROM of 80°. The Visual Analog Scale score for pain was 0 in 8 patients and 1 in the other 2 patients. All patients returned to their original workplace after rehabilitation. Conclusions Dynamic traction splints and postoperative rehabilitation programs could be an alternative treatment for comminuted intraarticular fracture of the MPJ.

A wideband single-pole single-throw (SPST) switch covering the dc to 220-GHz frequency range is presented in this letter. A four-element distributed topology is used to extend operation to the upper millimeter-wave band. With a combination of front-gate and back-gate biasing, unique to fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FDSOI) MOSFETs, and enabled by the thick metal/dielectric backend of the technology, the switch achieves an insertion loss of 3.1 dB and an isolation of 37 dB at 220 GHz, as well as a peak isolation of 58 dB at 200 GHz, without deembedding the pads. A $G$ -band variable gain low-noise amplifier featuring the SPST switch shows >50-dB gain control range, with a maximum peak gain of 9.5 dB at 190 GHz and a 3-dB bandwidth from 180 to 203 GHz.

Diabetes mellitus is a well-known chronic metabolic disease that poses a long-term threat to human health and is characterized by a relative or absolute lack of insulin, resulting in hyperglycemia. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) typically affects many metabolic pathways, resulting in β-cell dysfunction, insulin resistance, abnormal blood glucose levels, inflammatory processes, excessive oxidative reactions, and impaired lipid metabolism. It also leads to diabetes-related complications in many organ systems. Antidiabetic drugs have been approved for the treatment of hyperglycemia in T2DM; these are beneficial for glucose metabolism and promote weight loss, but have the risk of side effects, such as nausea or an upset stomach. A wide range of active components, derived from medicinal plants, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, polyphenol, quinones, and terpenoids may act as alternative sources of antidiabetic agents. They are usually attributed to improvements in pancreatic function by increasing insulin secretions or by reducing the intestinal absorption of glucose. Ease of availability, low cost, least undesirable side effects, and powerful pharmacological actions make plant-based preparations the key player of all available treatments. Based on the study of therapeutic reagents in the pathogenesis of humans, we use the appropriate animal models of T2DM to evaluate medicinal plant treatments. Many of the rat models have characteristics similar to those in humans and have the advantages of ease of genetic manipulation, a short breeding span, and access to physiological and invasive testing. In this review, we summarize the pathophysiological status of T2DM rat models and focus on several bioactive compounds from herbal medicine with different functional groups that exhibit therapeutic potential in the T2DM rat models, in turn, may guide future approach in treating diabetes with natural drugs.

Background Dysregulation of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) expressions is linked to asthma and allergic disease. Exposure to phthalate esters, a widely used plasticizer, is associated with respiratory and allergic morbidity. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) causes TSLP upregulation in the skin. In addition, phthalate exposure is associated with changes in environmentally induced DNA methylation, which might cause phenotypic heterogeneity. This study examined the DNA methylation of the TSLP gene to determine the potential mechanism between phthalate exposure and allergic diseases. Results Among all evaluated, only benzyl butyl phthalate (BBzP) in the settled dusts were negatively correlated with the methylation levels of TSLP and positively associated with children’s respiratory symptoms. The results revealed that every unit increase in BBzP concentration in the settled dust was associated with a 1.75% decrease in the methylation level on upstream 775 bp from the transcription start site (TSS) of TSLP (β = − 1.75, p = 0.015) after adjustment for child’s sex, age, BMI, parents’ smoking status, allergic history, and education levels, PM2.5, formaldehyde, temperature; and relative humidity. Moreover, every percentage increase in the methylation level was associated with a 20% decrease in the risk of morning respiratory symptoms in the children (OR 0.80, 95% CI 0.65–0.99). Conclusions Exposure to BBzP in settled dust might increase children’s respiratory symptoms in the morning through decreasing TSLP methylation. Therefore, the exposure to BBzP should be reduced especially for the children already having allergic diseases.

A predicting model based on long-short-term-memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) is proposed to assist autonomous vehicles (AVs) to drive safely. To understand the behaviors of surroundings under a mixed scene of vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians, the proposed model can predict the future trajectory of each object with models constructed by GRU. Since different objects have diverse behaviors, this paper applies different models to different categories for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. For each object, the proposed model considers three observed trajectories with different time steps as the input data to predict a more accurate future trajectory. The proposed model is verified and compared with LSTM and GRU on KITTI dataset in the conducted experiments.

What is known and objective Starting 1 August 2013, the eligible cholesterol level for statin reimbursement in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) or cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related risk factors changed from LDL-C ≥ 130 mg/dl (or TC ≥ 200 mg/dl) to LDL-C ≥ 100 mg/dl (or TC ≥ 160 mg/dl) in Taiwan, which may modify clinician prescribing behaviours. We aimed to evaluate the impact of changing reimbursement criteria on statin treatment patterns. Methods A before-after cohort design was conducted using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Differences in statin treatment patterns between the pre- and postregulation periods were compared. Two prespecified study cohorts were identified to examine the impacts of this change on those who need statins for "secondary prevention" (patients newly diagnosed with ASCVD) and those who need statins for "primary prevention" (patients newly diagnosed with CVD-related risk factors, such as diabetes mellitus [DM]). Treatment patterns measured in this study included initiation, discontinuation, switching, dose increase, dose decrease and dose maximization. Results The proportion of patients who initiated statins during the postregulation period was higher than that of patients who initiated statins during the preregulation period (eg coronary heart disease (CHD) patients, pre- vs. postregulation: 41.23% vs. 48.25%). Notably, only 30%-40% of patients initiated statin use in the postregulation period across different conditions. In addition, the proportion of patients who discontinued statins remained very high. Even in the postregulation period, more than half of CHD patients discontinued statins during the 1-year follow-up period (eg CHD patients, pre- vs. postregulation: 59.07% vs. 52.75%). What is new and conclusion The new reimbursement criteria started on 1 August 2013 seemed to lower the barriers of access to the first statin prescription among patients with CHD, cerebrovascular disease (CBVD) and DM. Nevertheless, the proportion of patients who initiated statin use was suboptimal, and the proportion of patients who discontinued statins was very high in the postregulation period.

Background Identification of vertebral fractures (VFs) is critical for effective secondary fracture prevention owing to their association with the increasing risks of future fractures. Plain abdominal frontal radiographs (PARs) are a common investigation method performed for a variety of clinical indications and provide an ideal platform for the opportunistic identification of VF. This study uses a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to identify the feasibility for the screening, detection, and localization of VFs using PARs. Methods A DCNN was pretrained using ImageNet and retrained with 1306 images from the PARs database obtained between August 2015 and December 2018. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were evaluated. The visualization algorithm gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) was used for model interpretation. Results Only 46.6% (204/438) of the VFs were diagnosed in the original PARs reports. The algorithm achieved 73.59% accuracy, 73.81% sensitivity, 73.02% specificity, and an AUC of 0.72 in the VF identification. Conclusion Computer driven solutions integrated with the DCNN have the potential to identify VFs with good accuracy when used opportunistically on PARs taken for a variety of clinical purposes. The proposed model can help clinicians become more efficient and economical in the current clinical pathway of fragile fracture treatment.

Background Studies have demonstrated that exposure to extreme outdoor temperatures increases respiratory diseases related mortality and morbidity, especially in older adults. However, older adults spend over 80% of their time indoors, and the cumulative effects of exposure to indoor temperature on the risk of respiratory diseases have not been investigated. The objective of this study was to study the cumulative effect of indoor temperature exposure on emergency department visit due to respiratory diseases among older adults. Methods Participant data were collected from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database from 2000 to 2014 in Taiwan. The cumulative degree hour was used to reflect the cumulative effect of indoor temperature exposure. A distributed lag nonlinear model was used to analyze the association between cumulative degree hour and emergency department visit due to respiratory diseases. Results Our findings revealed a significant risk of emergency department visits due to respiratory diseases at 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31 °C when cooling cumulative degree hours exceeded 60, 30, 19, 1, and 1, respectively, during the hot season (May to October) and at 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23 °C when heating cumulative degree hours exceeded 1, 1, 1, 39, and 49, respectively, during the cold season (November to April). Conclusions We conclude that the cumulative effects of indoor temperature exposure should be considered to reduce respiratory disease risk under climate change.

Although food surplus and food waste issues are extremely important, the amount of literature published on these topics is astonishingly low by our observation. The relationships between food surplus/food waste and economic/environmental sustainability have not yet been holistically assessed and discussed. The main purpose of this study is to understand global food surplus and food waste issues in order to tackle the economic sustainability and environmental sustainability crisis. Content analysis was used to analyze 500 relevant materials and was conducted by NVivo 12 Plus software. The results contain seven countries, six organizations, and six continents, providing a framework to recognize the economic and environmental sustainability crisis. In addition, six major organizations and regions were identified and were found to be relevant to the important issues of food surplus, food waste, the sharing economy, economic sustainability, and environmental sustainability. With the trend of globalization, this study highlights some preliminary evidence for reducing food waste, for conflicts of the sharing economy, and for regulated sustainability. Further research and regulations in terms of economic and environmental sustainability are strongly suggested.

In order for humans to achieve a healthier diet and maintain ecological balance, a new concept regarding sustainable food has been introduced. The aim of this study is, therefore, to explore consumers' interest in choosing sustainable food. The study utilized "Do Survey," an internet survey platform, to distribute questionnaires. Survey invitations were sent out in a snowball manner. Invitations were posted in multiple online communities and forwarded by various members to other sites; 333 valid responses were collected. The results show that family and friend support and health incentive are the two strongest predictors for sustainable food buying interest. Price accessibility, on the other hand, has no impact on interest. This is not to say that price accessibility does not influence behavior. It just means that it is not the factor that fosters interest. Once an individual is interested, she/he may still rely heavily on price accessibility in purchasing sustainable food.

Recent advancements in deep learning (DL) have led to the wide adoption of AI applications, such as image recognition [1], image de-noising and speech recognition, in the 5G smartphones. For a satisfactory user experience, there are stringent requirements in the real-time response of smartphone applications. In order to meet the performance expectations for DL, numerous deep learning accelerators (DLA) have been proposed for DL inference on the edge devices [2]–[5]. As depicted in Fig. 7.1.1, the major challenge in designing a DLA for smartphones is achieving the required computing efficiency, while limited by the power budget and memory bandwidth (BW). Since the overall power consumption of a smartphone system-on-a-chip (SoC) is usually constrained to 2 to 3W and the available DRAM BW is around 10-to-30GB/s, the power budget allocated for a DLA must be below 1W with the memory BW limited to 1-to-10GB/s. While operating under such constraints, the DLA is required to support various network topologies and highly precise neural operations in smartphone applications. For instance, the Android neural network APIs currently specify the use of asymmetric quantization (ASYMM-Q), providing better precision than conventional symmetric quantization.

Context Little is known about cancer-related symptoms in terms of prevalence, severity, and distress among patients with cancer in Indonesia because of a lack of a valid and reliable scale. Objectives To translate and validate the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS) among cancer patients in Indonesia. Methods Two procedures consisting of forward-backward translation and validation were conducted. The validation process including pretesting involved 34 cancer patients, and the psychometric testing of the Indonesian version of MSAS (MSAS-I) involved 207 cancer patients. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct, and concurrent validity of the MSAS-I were established. Results Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the total scale and subscales of the MSAS-I ranged from 0.75 to 0.87. The interclass correlations for test-retest reliability ranged from 0.80 to 0.89. A two-factor structure in the MSAS-I was produced by exploratory factor analysis, and the two factors accounted for 28.34% of the cumulative variance. In addition, the concurrent validity was demonstrated by the significant associations between the subscales of the MSAS-I and their corresponding subscales in the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30, with r = −0.25 to −0.65 (all P Conclusion The MSAS-I presents a valid and reliable scale for assessing symptom frequency, severity, and distress among patients with cancer in Indonesia. Implication for Nursing The MSAS-I can assess physical and psychological symptoms during cancer treatment. In addition, the MSAS-I may facilitate in measuring the effectiveness of symptom management strategies.

Background Breast cancer takes time for its survivors after a mastectomy to adjust to their changed bodies. There are limited studies about the process of how those survivors accept the changes of their bodies and how they reestablish their new selves. Objective The aim of this study was to understand the perception of body from women diagnosed with breast cancer more than 5 years previously and whose treatment included a mastectomy. Methods A phenomenological method was applied to this study. Women who received a mastectomy at least 5 years previously were invited to participate. Eight participants were recruited from southern Taiwan. Results Twenty transcripts were obtained and analyzed using Colaizzi's method. Three themes were obtained from the data analysis: "restoration of the body image," "abandonment of objectification," and "redefinition of self." Subthemes were also identified and described. Conclusion The results indicate that women with breast cancer have embodied the recovering experience to a new self and have adapted to identify their new bodies. They overcome being a female body with an absent breast(s) by discovering the value of their existence and being free from self-objectification. Implications for practice This study contributes to the understanding of the perception of body in long-term breast cancer survivors, which reflects the process of adjusting to the loss of a breast/breasts to reconstructing a new body experience. Health professionals could help and encourage women undergoing a mastectomy to engage in self-recovery by searching for and affirming self-value.
