Background: Potentized medicines include, according to the Brazilian legislation, homeopathic, anthroposophic, and antihomotoxic medicine and are regulated by the Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). Aim: This study aims to analyze and describe a profile of potentized medicines manufactured in Brazil, either registered or notified. Methodology: Information was obtained by data analysis related to ANVISA’s electronic medicine registration system. Results: The results, obtained as of September 2012, showed that 106 potentized medicines were registered and 519 were notified. Among the registered medicines, 92.0% were combined and 100.0% of the notified were simple medicines. For registered medicines, there were equivalent manufacturing scales among them, whereas for notified medicines, there was a predominance of centesimal scales. Active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s) of vegetal origin were the most commonly used for potentized medicine manufacturing processes; the oral route was the most common form of administration. Potentized medicines manufacturing units are more often located in southeast region of Brazil. In addition, homeopathic medicines prevail as registered or notified medicines, followed by anthroposophic medicines. Conclusions: The results of the study are expected to be useful as reference material for ANVISA to improve its regulatory activity as well the industry sector and other stakeholders.

While gender diversity in leadership has been shown to benefit organizations and promote innovations, women continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions in the industry sector. With increasing numbers of women pursuing PhDs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, it is critical to examine how PhD programs contribute to the career paths of PhDs. This study examines the role of doctoral education preparation in communication, management, and technical skills, as well as post-PhD early career management training (ECMT), on PhDs’ attainment of leadership positions in industry. Data come from the National Science Foundation Survey of Doctorate Recipients, National Science Foundation Survey of Earned Doctorates, and National Research Council Rankings of PhD programs. Using regression analyses, results indicate that ECMT is associated with a higher likelihood of attainment of leadership positions. PhD preparation in management skills also contributes to the attainment of leadership positions. Previous literature has shown that structural inequities and workplace bias contribute to limiting women’s progress to leadership positions and that it is critical to address systemic and workplace biases. Research findings suggest that PhD program preparation and increased access to professional development opportunities can help contribute to the enhancement of women’s pathways to leadership roles. Structural changes in doctoral education preparation in management skills and increases in ECMT opportunities offered by employers also have the potential to increase the participation of STEM PhDs in leadership roles in industry.

The historic 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (DHOS) led to public distress regarding potential impacts on children in nearby Gulf Coast communities. Using a community-based South Louisiana panel study of households with children, we examined the effect of fishing industry employment on changes in a subjective measure of general child health and whether economic and physical DHOS exposures played a mediating role. Fishing industry employment had a negative effect on child health compared to other industries. Economic exposure and physical exposure both mediated the effects of the fishing industry on child health, with economic exposure mediating a larger share (49.3%) of the relationship compared to physical exposure (40.5%). The importance of economic oil spill exposure in these findings highlights the significance of social determinants of health at the intersection of disasters and child vulnerability.

PURPOSE: The aim of the paper is to analyse the importance of both internal capabilities (resources) and external information sources in implementing product, process, marketing and organizational innovations aiming to maximize firm competitive advantage and create value for stakeholders. Furthermore, in particular, we examine the role of public organizations, business networks, firm size, and the industry sector, in the emergence of different types of product, process, marketing, and organizational innovations. The research was based on the typology of innovation (product, process, marketing, and organizational) adopted by the OECD. METHODOLOGY: The paper is based on data from 389 SMEs located in Finland and describes the development of a model for testing the factors that increase the innovativeness of SMEs. The logistic regression model is used as a methodology. Findings: The results show that the creation of novel products, processes and marketing innovation is connected to various external sources of information, such as fairs, the media and the internet. Moreover, the relationship between internal capabilities such as the firm’s know-how increases the marketing and organizational innovativeness of SMEs. Our results demonstrated that the creation of product innovation is positively connected to manufacturing. Furthermore, we find that the creation of novel processes and organizational innovation is related to firm size, such that firms with fewer than 20 employees (smallest firms) were concentrated among non-innovators and companies with more than 20 employees were concentrated among innovators. IMPLICATIONS FOR THEORY AND PRACTICE: The contribution of our study is to analyse to what extent various types of innovation rely on specific information sources. This study also provides suggestions for practice and policymakers. Contrary to expectations regarding our findings, public support organizations were not statistically significant in any innovation model. Therefore, public support organizations should develop better mechanisms to find SMEs with strong motivations to develop new products and market opportunities. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: This paper provides a new and topical viewpoint for the literature by examining the possible factors explaining the increase in SMEs’ likelihood of implementing product, process, marketing, and organizational innovations. Our study provides comprehensive information on how different stakeholders contribute to the emergence of SME innovation.

India is a country with unique market dynamics and high entrepreneurial spirit. During recent years, the country’s industry sector is dominated by innovation led business enterprises that are found to achieve high profits within a short span of time. This paradigm shift is mainly influenced by the significant role played by technology-based business incubation support systems and expert mentorship programmes. It is observed that start-up companies emerging from these incubators are becoming machines of rapid and tremendous growth. In support of this growing trend and with the aim of laying the foundation for innovation-based businesses and knowledge-driven economy in agricultural sector, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) – an apex public research organization in India, established a network of Agri-business incubation (ABI) Centres linking its R&D Institutes across the country. Through this initiative ICAR brought into place novel policies and programmes, to maximize technology commercialization, establish public private partnerships and handhold entrepreneurs. This paper portrait the activities of such an ABI Centre attached to ICAR - Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, and presents an overview of the new systems of business incubation and support services to entrepreneurs. The clients registered at the ABI Centre are given necessary guidance to choose a suitable technology with the help of Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) and given an opportunity to commence business operations using the semi-commercial pilot plant facilities attached to the institute. A case study of a client who adopted the ICAR-CIFT technology for ‘Hybrid Solar Dryer’ is also included in this paper.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the sustainability performances of apparel, footwear and accessory (AFA) B Corps, providing companies, especially micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, with reasonable suggestions on how to incorporate the concept of sustainability efficiently. Design/methodology/approach This study focused on 117 AFA B Corps. B Corps’ overall sustainability performances consist of their performances in the five areas of governance, workers, community, environment and customers. First, the 117 B Corps’ performances in these areas were compared. Second, multiple regression models were built to predict the B Corps’ sustainability performances based on their inherent characteristics (headquarter location, age, size and industry sector). Third, according to the B Corps’ performances in the five areas, the B Corps were clustered using the hieratical clustering method. Findings This study found that the B Corps’ performances in different areas were significantly different and their performances in the area of the community were better than in the other four areas. The B Corps’ characteristics were correlated to their sustainability performances. For example, company size was positively related to the B Corps’ performances in the area of workers. Additionally, Clusters 1, 2 and 3 were identified and characterized by their competitive performances in the areas of governance, workers and community, respectively. Originality/value This study contributes to the knowledge of AFA B Corps’ sustainability performances, identifying the weakness and strongness of the sustainable practices accepted by existing AFA B Corps and lending insights regarding how to predict and improve sustainability performances.

Sectoral economic growth affects the level of poverty in the area. High economic growth does not merely reduce poverty. Equitable distribution of income is also a matter that needs to be considered in line with increased economic growth. High economic growth is the process of accumulation of sectoral economic growth that has undergone a structural shift in its journey. Changes in economic structure are marked by a decrease in the contribution of the agricultural sector and an increase in the contribution of the industrial sector, both in gross domestic product (GDP) and in employment. Economic growth needs to be directed towards economic sectors that are effective in reducing poverty and creating equitable distribution of income. The purpose of this study is to answer the question of how the influence of sectoral economic growth on poverty in East Java. For this purpose the panel data regression model is used. The selection of variables is based on research objectives. Agriculture sector GRDP (VP), industrial sector GRDP (VI) and service sector GRDP (VJ) represent sectoral economic growth. The results of the test show an increase in the contribution of the industrial sector effectively reduces poverty. In other words, between the agriculture, industry and services sectors, only the industrial sector has positive and significant parameters for poverty in East Java.

anemon Economic growth is defined as the long-term expansion of an economy's production capacity. Economic growth has been linked to with various factors throughout history. One of these factors is the increase in manufacturing industry production. Kaldor was the first economist to empirically investigate the relationship between industry and economic growth. The first law of Kaldor's growth theory claims that the manufacturing industry is the engine of economic growth. The aim of this paper is to test the validity of the law in Turkey, using annual data for the period 1986-2018. In the study, a time series analysis was carried out by dividing the industry sector into sub-sectors. The findings of the research indicate that there is a positive relationship between manufacturing industrial sector and the economic growth. In this context, it has been determined that an increase by 1% in manufacturing industry production raised the economic growth by 0.62%. 647362

Safeguard measures is a trade remedies policies regulated by World Trade Organization (WTO) to recover loss (injury) suffered by domestic industries as a result of liberalization in international trade, as an instrument to protect and increase competitiveness of domestic industries which are still at infant industry stage. In Indonssia, the steel industry sector is designated as a national priority so that its growth must be maintained. Meanwhile, the import surge phenomenon of flat-rolled products from iron or non-alloy steel has threatened the existence of domestic steel industries which produce similar commodities. The Indonesian government responded by setting the Safeguard Measures policy, with the hope that the industry would make structural adjustments during the imposition period so that its competitiveness could be increased. This study uses monthly import data from January 2012 to December 2018 to determine whether the Safeguard Measures has been effective as a protection instrument. To measure competitiveness, Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) method and Trade Specialization Index (TSI) were used. The results of this study show that the policy reduced the import of the same and similar steel products which meant it is effective as an instrument of protection. In addition, there has been an increase in competitiveness even though Indonesia is still a net importer.

Improved understanding of the overall distribution of workplace coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreaks by industry sector could help direct targeted public health action; however, this has not been described. The Utah Department of Health (UDOH) analyzed COVID-19 surveillance data to describe workplace outbreaks by industry sectors. In this report, workplaces refer to non-health care, noncongregate-living, and noneducational settings. As of June 5, 2020, UDOH reported 277 COVID-19 outbreaks, 210 (76%) of which occurred in workplaces. Approximately 12% (1,389 of 11,448) of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Utah were associated with workplace outbreaks. The 210 workplace outbreaks occurred in 15 of 20 industry sectors;* nearly one half of all workplace outbreaks occurred in three sectors: Manufacturing (43; 20%), Construction (32; 15%) and Wholesale Trade (29; 14%); 58% (806 of 1,389) of workplace outbreak-associated cases occurred in these three sectors. Although 24% of Utah's workforce in all 15 affected sectors identified as Hispanic or Latino (Hispanic) or a race other than non-Hispanic white (nonwhite†) (1), 73% (970 of 1,335) of workplace outbreak-associated COVID-19 cases were in persons who identified as Hispanic or nonwhite. Systemic social inequities have resulted in the overrepresentation of Hispanic and nonwhite workers in frontline occupations where exposure to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, might be higher (2); extra vigilance in these sectors is needed to ensure prevention and mitigation strategies are applied equitably and effectively to workers of racial and ethnic groups disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Health departments can adapt workplace guidance to each industry sector affected by COVID-19 to account for different production processes and working conditions.

Economic contributions of an industry sector are often vital information in the policy-making process. IMPLAN data and software were used to determine the economic contribution of forest industries to all 50 states plus Washington, D.C. Rankings of the states' contributions to employment, employee compensation, and value added were determined. National forest inventory data, rural population, and industrial energy costs were examined for correlation with total forestry contributions to each state's economies. Rankings were based on absolute contributions as well as contributions as a percentage of a state's total economy. Percentage rankings present the relative importance of forestry to a state's economy, and can differ considerably from absolute value rankings. Regional and national contributions were also calculated to model interstate and regional contribution “leakages,” or trade effects. Differences in both interstate and interregional trade flows are substantial. Industrial energy costs, rural population, and timber removals were significantly correlated with total economic contributions.

With the continuous innovation of new-generation information technology and its accelerated integration with manufacturing industry, industrial internet platforms (IIPs) are rapidly emerging worldwide. Construction and application of IIP has become a new focus in international competition for leading enterprises, and also a new direction of industrial development for many countries worldwide. However, the development of IIP is still in the stage of exploration, and the industry sector still lacks unified understanding of the IIP. Therefore, this study firstly proposes a reference architecture of IIP to clarify its framework and core functions, so as to provide a general reference model for the industry to understand and jointly promote construction of IIP. Secondly, an assessment system is proposed to evaluate the usage of IIP. The assessment framework is composed from three domains namely the foundation, key capability, value and benefit. Finally, the practical value of the reference architecture and the assessment framework of IIP is verified by an industry practice.

In the new digital age, Data is the collection of the observation and facts in terms of events, thus data is continuously growing, getting denser and more varied by the minute across multiple channels. Nowadays, consumers generate mass amounts of data on a daily basis. Hence, Big Data (BD) emerged and is evolving rapidly, the various types of data being processed are huge, and ensuring that this data is being used efficiently is becoming increasingly more difficult. BD has been differentiated into several characteristics (the V’s) and many researchers have been developing more characteristics for new purposes over the past years. Therefore, it is shown from observation that there is a clear gap between researchers about the current status of the BD characteristics. Even after the introduction of newer characteristics, many papers are still proposing the use of 3 or 5 V’s, while some researchers are far more progressed and has reached up to 10V’s. This paper will provide an overview of the main characteristics that have been added over time and investigate the recent growth of Big Data Analytics (BDA) characteristics in each industry sector which will provide some detailed and general scope for most researchers to consider and learn from.

This paper reasons about the economic structural change and economic growth in Egypt amid the period 1983-2014. This paper utilizes the procedure of Vries et a. 2014. The paper utilizes the novel Penn World Table (PWT) adaptation 9 information base to cover the period somewhere around 1983 and 2014. It is found that there were economic structure changes amid the period 1983-2014 as the significance of the agriculture sector declined over the time, the significance of the industry sector expanded since to 1990, and the significance of the service sector expanded following 2000. Additionally, this exploration affirms that there is a solid connection (with a coefficient correlation of 85.11 percent) between the two series of employment and GDP growth rates. As indicated by the labour productivity deterioration the inside impact was constantly more noteworthy than the aggregate reallocation impact However, in the event that we take a gander at the two parts of the aggregate reallocation impact, unmistakably the dynamic reallocation impact has a major part in deciding the total productivity growth. Therefore, another strategy ought to be intended to support the voluntary labour movement crosswise over sectors and areas in Egypt.

The industry is the current engine of the Indonesian economy over the past three decades; the economic structure in Indonesia has the transformation from the agriculture sector to the industry sector. The objective of this study is to examine the causality between agricultural, industry, and economic growth in Indonesia. By using the vector error correction model (VECM), this research finds that in the long-term, there is directional causality from the industry added value, economic growth on the agricultural added value. Meanwhile, in the short-term, the variable of industry added value and economic growth has the two-way causality. Besides, the agricultural added value can only affect the industrial added value and economic growth in the short-term. These findings support the idea that the agricultural sector plays a vital role in the economy, such as increasing economic growth and growth in other sectors, especially the industrial sector in this case.JEL Classification: F40, L60, O13, O47

The article provides distinctive features of the four models, analysis of the regions where specific types of models prevail, and the results of model testing. As it has been found, flagship universities basically develop along two generic models, RCU (classical universities, nearly half of the project participants) and RTL (engineering universities, one third of the flagship universities). For most universities, the type of transformation model pursued is strongly related to their current status and external environment characteristics. However, a number of universities fall in between and cannot be classified neatly under any particular model due to some specific external and internal factors. In this case, universities may use elements of more than one transformation model at once, yet the choice of model should first of all be based on the regional factors that determine the position and role of the flagship university in terms of the priority areas of regional development.

Despite the heightened urgency of curbing carbon emissions around the world, the healthcare sector in general, and the pharmaceutical sector in particular have received very little attention from the sustainability community in terms of their contribution to the global carbon footprint. In this paper, we conduct an analysis of the overall contributions and the historical emissions trends of the pharmaceutical sector, as well as an industry-specific comparative analysis of the major pharmaceutical companies in the world. Surprisingly, our analysis reveals that the pharmaceutical industry is significantly more emission-intensive than the automotive industry. We also use a previously published mathematical framework linking national target emissions to the target emission intensity of the pharmaceutical sector to derive the emission intensity of the pharmaceutical sector required for the US to meet its reductions commitments per the now defunct Obama-administration commitments at the 2015 Paris Agreement. We identify the excess emitters among the top-15 Pharmaceutical companies, from those that are leading the pack with their emissions improvement efforts. The results are quite instructive as we find a far greater variability amongst the Top-15 pharmaceuticals than the Top-10 automotive companies, suggesting a very disparate set of environmental practices within the industry. The paper should elicit further in-depth studies of the environmental performance of the pharmaceutical sector and help inform policy makers, business leaders and academicians on how to help curb this unwarranted level of emissions in this important and growing industry sector.

Companies increasingly need detailed information on global impacts related to their products and services. This article describes a quantitative analytical approach that supports a better understanding of value-chain wide corporate sustainability performance. We use an extended multi-regional input-output model to analyse the global supply chains of products and projects for selected impact indicators (energy, greenhouse gases and water) by supply chain tier, industry sector and country. As a case study, we conduct a hotspot analysis of four sample projects from a single company in the wind energy sector. Calculated energy payback times vary between 8.1 and 12.5 months, and greenhouse gas intensities vary between 11.7 and 18.3 g CO2-e/kWh across the four projects. Impacts in the country of installation and production are mainly caused by the electricity, metal and concrete sectors. The supply chain dominates the overall impacts, with supplier tiers 2 to 4 causing the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions. The results allow management to better prioritize actions to manage and alleviate global impacts more effectively. In the future, the company that participated as our case study will base its carbon reduction strategy on the applied approach described in this paper.

We examine the long-term effects of Shariah-compliant business practices on the financial performance of the practicing firms. Shariah is the set of personal and societal behaviors derived from study of the Qur’an, the Islamic holy book. A firm is considered Shariah-compliant when it is part of a religiously approved industry sector and meets five quantitative screens. The first three screens measure each firm’s liquidity, the fourth examines each firm’s leverage, and the final screen, as part of the “purification process,” determines if the company’s reliance upon interest-based income is at an acceptable level. We use long-term event study methodology to examine the effects of compliance over five years. We develop and test two hypotheses to determine if Shariah-compliance enhances the long-term value of the firm. Using a large sample selected from 1990 to 2018, we find that Shariah-compliance positively affects long-term financial performance as evidenced by increased values in return on assets (ROA) and return on sales (ROS). However, the practice of Shariah-compliant investing offers mixed results for stock return performance. Our results show adherence to the five quantitative Shariah screening rules could be considered as a successful long-term managerial strategy, having positive implications even for firms not in Shariah-approved industry sectors.

This study investigated the status of the established university-industry-government linkages of the private university in the Philippines relative to its commitment of serving the broader community. The study examined the characteristics of the university’s linkages in terms of sectoral groupings of the institutions under linkage tie-ups, nature of collaboration, level of collaboration, and documentation process employed. The study also described the other linkages the university has actively participated to further achieve its commitment of serving the broader community. Using the university’s Registry Form on Linkages, it was found out that majority of its partners are coming from the industry sector, provincial-based, with OJT/ apprenticeship as the most common nature of collaboration, and where the linkages are either forged with or without MOAs/ MOUs. This private university has also tie-ups with provincial-based organizations with missions of either protecting the environment and/or improving the lives of its community residents by addressing their needs, conditions, and aspirations. While the university’s existing linkages are good enough to meet its objectives, however its current practices may still need improvement so as to fully maximize the intended benefits of its collaboration.

This study investigates how regional variations in institutions and knowledge pools impact new firm entry into emerging industry sectors. Using the cleantech industry sector as a research context, we hypothesize and find that supportive regional institutional logics – shared meaning systems in a community that confer legitimacy upon particular goals and practices – generate cognitive schemas (mental models) that facilitate opportunity recognition and increase new firm entry rates. Drawing from research on socially situated cognition, we demonstrate that supportive institutional logics have a greater impact on new firm entry when a regional knowledge pool is larger, but a reduced impact on new firm entry when the knowledge pool is more specialized. These findings integrate previously distinct perspectives from institutional theory and knowledge economics, while contributing to research on how new industry sectors emerge.

In the last decades, logistics has become an important industry sector, with significant impacts on the environment generated through several internal and external logistic processes. We analysed and elaborated on integrating sustainability topics within logistics-oriented programmes at universities across Europe, based on a framework of systemising and classifying sustainability terms. We also analysed pedagogical approaches within the identified courses. In our study, we perceived a moderate diversity of courses from the system and horizontal sustainability perspectives. Courses mostly focus on “principle” and “approach” levels, denoting specialised courses, with less environmental and social topics. Such coverage and distribution might imply a limitation to develop complex, multi-dimensional, and inter-disciplinary understanding, thinking, and problem-solving required for real-world challenges, comprehending all the dimensions. We also perceived a scarcity by using pedagogical approaches, where the majority of the courses emphasise traditional ones. This paper’s novelty lies in providing the first empirical evaluation and elaboration of logistics-oriented programmes at European universities from a sustainability perspective. Thus, our study enriches current knowledge and research on sustainability integration into curricula at the university level, enabling new insights and better correlations between various study fields and pedagogical approaches used.
