Different from studies of butterfly wings through additive modification, this work for the first time studies the property change of butterfly wings through subtractive modification using oxygen plasma etching. The controlled modification of butterfly wings through such subtractive process results in gradual change of the optical properties, and helps the further understanding of structural optimization through natural evolution. The brilliant color of Morpho butterfly wings is originated from the hierarchical nanostructure on the wing scales. Such nanoarchitecture has attracted a lot of research effort, including the study of its optical properties, its potential use in sensing and infrared imaging, and also the use of such structure as template for the fabrication of high-performance photocatalytic materials. The controlled subtractive processes provide a new path to modify such nanoarchitecture and its optical property. Distinct from previous studies on the optical property of the Morpho wing structure, this study provides additional experimental evidence for the origination of the optical property of the natural butterfly wing scales. The study also offers a facile approach to generate new 3D nanostructures using butterfly wings as the templates and may lead to simpler structure models for large-scale man-made structures than those offered by original butterfly wings., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Radiative cooling, which normally requires relatively high infrared (IR) emissivity, is one of the insects' effective thermoregulatory strategies to maintain their appropriate body temperature. Recently, the physical correlation between the delicate biological microstructures and IR emissivity for thermal radiation draws increased attention. Here, a scent patch region on the hindwing of Rapala dioetas butterfly is found to exhibit enhanced IR emissivity compared with the non-scent patch regions. A series of optical simulations are conducted to differentiate the effect of biological structures and material composition on the high IR emissivity. Besides the intrinsic IR absorption (emission) of chitin (the main composition of butterfly wings), the hierarchical microstructures of the scent patch scale further improve the IR absorption (emission) through the increased inner surface area and multi-scattering effect. This enhancement of IR emissivity enables the butterfly to efficiently radiate heat from the scent patch region to the environment with a limited volume of chitin. This study of the correlation between IR emissivity and microstructural designs may offer additional pathways to engineer bioinspired materials and systems for radiative cooling applications. This work explores an alternative infrared (IR) detection mechanism that is based on the desorption of vapor molecules from the Morpho butterfly nanostructures under the stimulation of incoming IR photons, and demonstrates the use of such stimulated desorption for both broadband and wavelength selective IR detection. Compared to the structural deformation‐based IR detection using the Morpho nanostructures, this detection mechanism enables more than an order of magnitude of improvement in both the response of relative reflectance and also the signal‐to‐noise ratio at the maximum heat‐sink‐free response speed. The stimulated desorption also provides the opportunity to achieve the wavelength selective IR detection due to the wavelength selective IR absorption of the adsorbed molecules. With the demonstrated high performance in both broadband and wavelength selective IR detection, this detection approach can potentially enable other high performance sensing systems, including chemical vapor, biological, energy, and environmental sensing systems. This work explores an alternative vapor sensing mechanism through analyzing dynamic desorption process from butterfly wings for the differentiation of both individual and mixed vapors quantitatively. Morpho butterfly wings have been used in differentiating individual vapors, but it is challenging to use them for the differentiation of mixed vapor quantitatively. This paper demonstrates the use of Morpho butterfly wings for the sensitive and selective detection of closely related vapors in mixtures. Principal components analysis (PCA) is used to process the reflectance spectra of the wing scales during dynamic desorption of different vapors. With the desorption-based detection mechanism, individual vapors with different concentrations and mixed vapors with different mixing ratios can be differentiated using the butterfly wing based sensors. Both the original butterfly wings and butterfly wings with surface modification show the capability in distinguishing vapors in mixtures, which may offer a guideline for further improving selectivity and sensitivity of bioinspired sensors.
