Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by spontaneous episodes of abnormal synchronized neuronal activity. Calcium-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) are hypothesized to be a promising target for pharmacological intervention in epilepsy because they play a significant role in the potentiation of glutamatergic synapses. In this study, we investigated the effects of CP-AMPAR blockade on the development of epileptiform activity in mouse entorhinal cortex slices using the selective blocker IEM-1460. Epileptiform activity was induced by 4-aminopyridine-containing perfusing solution with increased potassium ion concentration and decreased magnesium ion concentration. To register the membrane potential of neurons of deep layers of the entorhinal cortex, the whole-cell patch-clamp method was used. The activity of both pyramidal neurons and inhibitory interneurons was recorded. The simultaneous registration of two cells of the aforementioned types demonstrated that interneuron activity is predominant prior to an ictal discharge. Pharmacological blockade of CP-AMPARs resulted in an increase in the frequency of GABAergic preictal discharges and an increase in the duration of ictal activity. Thus, blockade of CP-AMPARs has a pronounced proepileptic effect that is not associated with a decrease in the activity of inhibitory interneurons. These results suggest that the proepileptic effect of CP-AMPARs blockade may be due to an increase in the probability of generation of short bursts of activity preceding and constituting the ictal discharge. Excitotoxicity is one of the primary mechanisms of cell loss in a variety of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Other than the previously established signaling pathways of excitotoxicity, which depend on the excessive release of glutamate from axon terminals or over-activation of NMDA receptors (NMDARs), Ca2+ influx-triggered excitotoxicity through Ca2+-permeable (CP)-AMPA receptors (AMPARs) is detected in multiple disease models. In this review, both acute brain insults (e.g., brain trauma or spinal cord injury, ischemia) and chronic neurological disorders, including Epilepsy/Seizures, Huntington’s disease (HD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), chronic pain, and glaucoma, are discussed regarding the CP-AMPAR-mediated excitotoxicity. Considering the low expression or absence of CP-AMPARs in most cells, specific manipulation of the CP-AMPARs might be a more plausible strategy to delay the onset and progression of pathological alterations with fewer side effects than blocking NMDARs.

Chronic experiments on male Wistar and Krushinskii–Molodkina rats, the latter having an inherited predisposition for audiogenic convulsions, addressed the effects of glutamate receptor antagonist IEM-1925 – which acts on both NMDA and Ca2+-permeable AMPA/kainate receptors – on brain electrical activity during the development of pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE). Electrograms were recorded from the caudate nucleus, hippocampus, and the somatosensory, visual, and auditory areas of the cortex. The sequence of SE phase changes identified from electrogram patterns was found not to change on exposure to this blocker. In addition, IEM-1925 weakened the behavioral motor convulsive signs of SE in rats, decreasing seizure intensity from 8 to 4 points on the Pinel and Rovner [1978] scale. Furthermore, the latent period of onset of epileptiform activity in Krushinskii–Molodnika rats after administration of pilocarpine increased by 40% on the background of IEM-1925 at a dose of 10 mg/kg (on average from 12.8 ± 1.1 to 18.0 ± 2.1 min), with an almost two-fold increase in Wistar rats (from 22.5 ± 0.2 to 43.5 ± 3.7 min). The mean durations of SE after IEM-1925 (10 mg/kg) in Krushinskii–Molodnika and Wistar rats were 4.5–5 times shorter than without blocker. The data obtained here provide evidence that combined blockade of NMDA and Ca2+-permeable AMPA/kainate glutamate receptors, although unable to prevent onset of pilocarpine-induced SE, increased the latent period of the onset of status and significantly decreased both individual phase durations and the total duration of SE. Abnormal neuronal activity during epileptic seizures alters the properties of synaptic plasticity, and, consequently, leads to cognitive impairment. The molecular mechanism of these alterations in synaptic plasticity is still unclear. In the present study, using a 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) in vitro model, we demonstrated that epileptiform activity in rat hippocampal slices initially causes substantial enhancement of field excitatory postsynaptic potential amplitude. However, the potentiation of CA3-CA1 synapses was temporary and switched to long-term depression (LTD) within an hour. Previous studies showed that transient incorporation of calcium-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) is crucial for the consolidation of long-term potentiation (LTP). We confirmed that, in normal conditions, the blockage of CP-AMPARs prevented the consolidation of LTP induced by theta-burst stimulation (TBS). In contrast, the blockage of CP-AMPARs preserved synaptic potentiation induced by epileptiform activity. One hour after a period of epileptiform activity in the hippocampal slices, synaptic plasticity was substantially altered, and the TBS protocol was unable to produce LTP. Moreover, if CP-AMPARs were blocked, the TBS protocol induced LTD. We investigated the effects of regular exercise on chronic stress-induced memory consolidation impairment and its underlying mechanism. We focused on prolactin (PRL)-modulated calcium-permeable (CP)-α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptors (AMPARs) in neurons in the CA1 stratum lacunosum-moleculare (SLM) area of the dorsal hippocampus. Regular exercise protected against memory retention defects and prevented dendritic retraction in apical distal segments of hippocampal CA1 neurons, as indicated by enhanced dendritic ramification, dendritic length, spine density, and synaptic protein levels following chronic stress. Regular exercise normalized synaptic CP-AMPAR assembly in the hippocampal CA1 SLM area, as evidenced by an enhanced ratio of GluR1 to GluR2 during chronic stress. This alteration in AMPARs was critical to memory retention, whereby memory retention was blunted by local blockage of CP-AMPARs in the SLM of naïve and exercised mice. Regular exercise improved PRL responsiveness in the hippocampal CA1 region during chronic stress, which led to increased binding of PRL to its receptor (PRLR) and PRL-dependent enhancement in phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 levels. The improvement in PRL responsiveness contributed to memory retention during chronic stress, as the protective action of exercise on memory persistence during stress was abolished by PRLR knockdown in the hippocampal CA1 area. Finally, in primary hippocampal cultures, repeated treatment with corticosterone led to decreased AMPAR-mediated Ca2+ influx, which was restored by PRL treatment. The above findings suggest a protective role for exercise against chronic stress-evoked defects in memory consolidation via PRL-modulated incorporation of CP-AMPARs into hippocampal CA1 synapses. Classically, long-term potentiation (LTP) at hippocampal CA1 synapses is triggered by the synaptic activation of NMDA receptors (NMDARs). More recently, it has been shown that calcium-permeable (CP)-AMPARs can also trigger synaptic plasticity at these synapses. Specifically, their activation is required for the PKA and protein synthesis dependent component of LTP that is typically induced by delivery of spaced trains of high frequency stimulation. Here we present new data that build upon these ideas, including the requirement for low frequency synaptic activation and NMDAR dependence. We also show that a spaced theta burst stimulation (sTBS) protocol induces a heterosynaptic potentiation of baseline responses via activation of CP-AMPARs. Finally, we present data that implicate CP-AMPARs in synaptic tagging and capture, a fundamental process that is associated with the protein synthesis-dependent component of LTP. We have studied how a sTBS can augment the level of LTP generated by a weak TBS (wTBS), delivered 30 min later to an independent input. We show that inhibition of CP-AMPARs during the sTBS eliminates, and that inhibition of CP-AMPARs during the wTBS reduces, this facilitation of LTP. These data suggest that CP-AMPARs are crucial for the protein synthesis-dependent component of LTP and its heterosynaptic nature.

Excessive excitation is considered one of the key mechanisms underlying epileptic seizures. We investigated changes in the evoked postsynaptic responses of medial entorhinal cortex (ERC) pyramidal neurons by seizure-like events (SLEs), using the modified 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) model of epileptiform activity. Rat brain slices were perfused with pro-epileptic solution contained 4-AP and elevated potassium and reduced magnesium concentration. We demonstrated that 15-min robust epileptiform activity in slices leads to an increase in the amplitude of α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR)-mediated component of the evoked response, as well as an increase in the polysynaptic γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated components. The increase in AMPA-mediated postsynaptic conductance depends on NMDA receptor activation. It persists for at least 15 min after the cessation of SLEs and is partly attributed to the inclusion of calcium-permeable AMPA receptors in the postsynaptic membrane. The mathematical modeling of the evoked responses using the conductance-based refractory density (CBRD) approach indicated that such augmentation of the AMPA receptor function and depolarization by GABA receptors results in prolonged firing that explains the increase in polysynaptic components, which contribute to overall network excitability. Taken together, our data suggest that AMPA receptor enhancement could be a critical determinant of sustained status epilepticus (SE).

Long-term potentiation (LTP) at hippocampal CA1 synapses is classically triggered by the synaptic activation of NMDA receptors (NMDARs). More recently, it has been shown that calcium-permeable (CP) AMPA receptors (AMPARs) can also trigger synaptic plasticity at these synapses. Here, we review this literature with a focus on recent evidence that CP-AMPARs are critical for the induction of the protein kinase A (PKA)- and protein synthesis-dependent component of LTP.

Extended-access cocaine self-administration induces a progressive intensification of cue-induced drug craving during withdrawal termed “incubation of cocaine craving”. Rats evaluated after >1 month of withdrawal (when incubation of craving is robust) display alterations in excitatory synapses onto medium spiny neurons (MSNs) of the nucleus accumbens (NAc), including elevated levels of Ca2+-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPAR) and a transition from group I metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) mGlu5- to mGlu1-mediated synaptic depression. It is important to further characterize the emergent form of mGlu1-mediated synaptic depression because it has been demonstrated that mGlu1 stimulation, by normalizing CP-AMPAR transmission, reduces cue-induced cocaine craving. In the present study, we conducted whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in NAc core MSNs, comparing rats that underwent >35 days of withdrawal from cocaine self-administration to control rats that had self-administered saline. Bath application of the nonselective group I mGluR agonist dihydroxyphenylglycine (DHPG) produced a transient mGlu5-mediated synaptic depression in saline controls, whereas a persistent mGlu1-mediated synaptic depression emerged in cocaine rats. This form of long-term depression (LTD) was abolished by the inclusion of dynamin inhibitory peptide (DIP) in the recording electrode, indicating that it is mediated by removal of CP-AMPARs through a dynamin-dependent endocytosis mechanism. We further showed that CP-AMPAR endocytosis is normally coupled to the PICK1-mediated insertion of Ca2+-impermeable AMPARs (CI-AMPAR). Interestingly, this coupling is not obligatory because disruption of PICK1-mediated CI-AMPAR insertion with pep2-EVKI spared mGlu1-mediated CP-AMPAR endocytosis. Collectively, these results reveal similarities but also differences from mGlu1-LTD observed in other brain regions, and further our understanding of a form of plasticity that may be targeted to reduce cue-induced craving for cocaine and methamphetamine.

Abstract Dopaminergic signaling in the central nervous system regulates several aspects of animal behavior. In the dopaminergic circuits, there are two classes of neurons that can be differentiated by their expression of dopamine receptors, D1 or D2 receptors (D1Rs or D2Rs). Notably, Ca2+-permeable GluA2-lacking glutamate AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) are important for gating synaptic plasticity and gene expression in neurons, and their expression particularly in the striatum affects various forms of animal behavior. However, differential effects of GluA2-lacking AMPARs in D1R or D2R neurons on animal behavior have not been addressed. Here, we employed the Cre-Lox recombination system to remove GluA2 selectively in D1R or D2R neurons to express CP-AMPARs and carried out multiple behavior assays. First, the open-field assay revealed that D2R GluA2 knockout (KO) mice showed hypoactivity, while GluA2 KO in D1R neurons had no effect on locomotor activity. We also revealed that D1R GluA2 KO mice showed delayed learning in the accelerating rotarod test compared with control animals, whereas D2R GluA2 KO animals exhibited complete loss of motor learning. In the sociability test, GluA2-lacking AMPAR expression in D1R neurons induced hypersociability, whereas D2R GluA2 KO mice elicited loss of sociability. Both D1R and D2R GluA2 KO mice consumed less food compared with control animals, while D1R GluA2 KO animals showed significantly more weight gain. Finally, D1R GluA2 KO induced anti-depressant effects, while GluA2-lacking AMPAR expression in D2R neurons promoted depression-like behavior. Abstract The role of the calcium-permeable AMPA receptor (CP-AMPAR) in synaptic plasticity is well established. CP-AMPAR is believed to be recruited to synapse when the memory trace is in a plastic state; however, the direct implications of its expression for memory processes is less known. Here, we investigated the contribution of CP-AMPAR expressed in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and hippocampus (HPC) in consolidation of different types of memory, retrieval and memory update. We showed that CP-AMPAR blockade by NASPM in the BLA and HPC impaired fear memory consolidation. NASPM infusion in the HPC also impaired spatial memory consolidation in the water maze, whereas consolidation of object location memory was not affected. We found evidence of the CP-AMPAR involvement in the BLA and in the HPC upon memory retrieval. Furthermore, memory update was affected by NASPM infusion in the HPC in both immediate shock deficit and water maze reversal learning tasks. Our data indicate that the activity of CP-AMPAR in the BLA and HPC is required for the consolidation of emotional memories. Moreover, this receptor activity is required for memory retrieval in the BLA and HPC. These findings support that CP-AMPAR has a key function in memory states in which plastic changes are presumably higher, such as the beginning of memory consolidation, and retrieval-induced updating. Rationale: Calcium-permeable (GluA2 subunit-free) AMPA receptors (CP-AMPAR) play prominent roles in fear extinction; however, no blockers of these receptors were studied in tests relevant to extinction learning so far. Methods: The CP-AMPAR antagonist IEM-1460 was administered once before extinction trainings, which were started either 1 or 28 days after fear conditioning (FC). We used a mild extinction protocol that durably decreased but did not abolish conditioned fear. The messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of GluA1 and GluA2 subunits were investigated at both time points in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and amygdala. Results: IEM-1460 transiently facilitated extinction 1 day after conditioning, but learned fear spontaneously recovered 4 weeks later. When the extinction protocol was applied 28 days after training, IEM-1460 enhanced extinction memory, moreover abolished conditioned fear for at least a month. The expression of GluA1 and GluA2 mRNAs was increased at both time points in the vmPFC. In the basolateral and central amygdala, the GluA1/GluA2 mRNA ratio increased, suggesting a shift towards the preponderance of GluA1 over GluA2 expression. Conclusions: AMPAR blockade lastingly enhanced the extinction of remote but not recent fear memories. Time-dependent changes in AMPA receptor subunit mRNA expression may explain the differential effects of CP-AMPAR blockade on recent and remote conditioned fear, further supporting the notion that the mechanisms maintaining learned fear change over time. Our findings suggest clinical implications for CP-AMPAR blockers, particularly for acquired anxieties (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder) which have a slow onset and are durable. Two forms of NMDA receptor (NMDAR)-dependent long-term potentiation (LTP) at hippocampal CA1 synapses can be distinguished based on their sensitivity to inhibitors of protein kinaseA(PKA). The PKA-dependent form requires multiple episodes of high-frequency stimulation (HFS) or theta burst stimuli (TBS) with a spacing between episodes in the order of minutes. To investigate the mechanism by which spaced episodes induce the PKA-dependent form of LTP, we have compared, in interleaved experiments, spaced (s) and compressed (c) TBS protocols in the rat CA1 synapses. We find that LTP induced by sTBS, but not that induced by cTBS, involves the insertion of calcium-permeable (CP) AMPARs, as assessed using pharmacological and electrophysiological criteria. Furthermore, a single TBS when paired with rolipram [4-(3-(cyclopentyloxy)-4-methoxyphenyl)pyrrolidin-2-one], to activate PKA, generates an LTP that also involves the insertion of CP-AMPARs. These data demonstrate that the involvement of CP-AMPARs in LTP is critically determined by the timing of the induction trigger and is associated specifically with the PKA-dependent form of LTP. In animal models of drug addiction, cocaine exposure has been shown to increase levels of calcium-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) in two brain regions that are critical for motivation and reward - the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the nucleus accumbens (NAc). This review compares CP-AMPAR plasticity in the two brain regions and addresses its functional significance. In VTA dopamine neurons, cocaine exposure results in synaptic insertion of high conductance CP-AMPARs in exchange for lower conductance calcium-impermeable AMPARs (CI-AMPARs). This plasticity is rapid (hours), GluA2-dependent, and can be observed with a single cocaine injection. In addition to strengthening synapses and altering Ca2+ signaling, CP-AMPAR insertion affects subsequent induction of plasticity at VTA synapses. However, CP-AMPAR insertion is unlikely to mediate the increased dopamine cell activity that occurs during early withdrawal from cocaine exposure. Within the VTA, the group I metabotropic glutamate receptor mGluR1 exerts a negative influence on CP-AMPAR accumulation. Acutely, mGluR1 stimulation elicits a form of LTD resulting from CP-AMPAR removal and CI-AMPAR insertion. In medium spiny neurons (MSNs) of the NAc, extended access cocaine self-administration is required to increase CP-AMPAR levels. This is first detected after approximately a month of withdrawal and then persists. Once present in NAc synapses, CP-AMPARs mediate the expression of incubation of cue-induced cocaine craving. The mechanism of their accumulation may be GluA1-dependent, which differs from that observed in the VTA. However, similar to VTA, mGluR1 stimulation removes CP-AMPARs from MSN synapses. Loss of mGluR1 tone during cocaine withdrawal may contribute to CP-AMPAR accumulation in the NAc. Thus, results in both brain regions point to the possibility of using positive modulators of mGluR1 as a treatment for cocaine addiction.

All-trans retinoic acid (RA) plays important roles in brain development through regulating gene transcription. Recently, a novel postdevelopmental role of RA in mature brain was proposed. Specifically, RA rapidly enhanced excitatory synaptic transmission independent of transcriptional regulation. RA synthesis was induced when excitatory synaptic transmission was chronically blocked, and RA then activated dendritic protein synthesis and synaptic insertion of homomeric GluA1 AMPA receptors, thereby compensating for the loss of neuronal activity in a homeostatic fashion. This action of RA was suggested to be mediated by its canonical receptor RARα but no genetic evidence was available. Thus, we here tested the fundamental requirement of RARα in homeostatic plasticity using conditional RARα knockout mice, and additionally performed a structure-function analysis of RARα. We show that acutely deleting RARα in neurons eliminated RA’s effect on excitatory synaptic transmission, and inhibited activity blockade-induced homeostatic synaptic plasticity. By expressing various RARα rescue constructs in RARα knockout neurons, we found that the DNA-binding domain of RARα was dispensable for its role in regulating synaptic strength, further supporting the notion that RA and RARα act in a non-transcriptional manner in this context. By contrast, the ligand-binding domain (LBD) and the mRNA-binding domain (F-domain) are both necessary and sufficient for the function of RARα in homeostatic plasticity. Furthermore, we found that homeostatic regulation performed by the LBD/F domains leads to insertion of calcium-permeable AMPA receptors. Our results confirm with unequivocal genetic approaches that RA and RARα perform essential non-transcriptional functions in regulating synaptic strength, and establish a functional link between the various domains of RARα and their involvement in regulating protein synthesis and excitatory synaptic transmission during homeostatic plasticity.

The insular cortex (IC) is widely believed to be an important forebrain structure involved in cognitive and sensory processes such as memory and pain. However, little work has been performed at the cellular level to investigate the synaptic basis of IC-related brain functions. To bridge the gap, the present study was designed to characterize the basic synaptic mechanisms for insular long-term potentiation (LTP). Using a 64-channel recording system, we found that an enduring form of late-phase LTP (L-LTP) could be reliably recorded for at least 3 h in different layers of IC slices after theta burst stimulation. The induction of insular LTP is protein synthesis dependent and requires activation of both GluN2A and GluN2B subunits of the NMDA receptor, L-type voltage-gated calcium channels, and metabotropic glutamate receptor 1. The pairedpulse facilitation ratio was unaffected by insular L-LTP induction, and expression of insular L-LTP required the recruitment of postsynaptic calcium-permeable AMPA receptors. Our results provide the first in vitro report of long-term multichannel recordings of L-LTP in the IC in adult mice and suggest its potential important roles in insula-related memory and chronic pain. Long-term depression (LTD) is an important synaptic mechanism for limiting excitatory influence over circuits subserving cognitive and emotional behavior. A major means of LTD induction is through the recruitment of signaling via Gq-linked receptors activated by norepinephrine (NE), acetylcholine, and glutamate. Receptors from these transmitter families have been proposed to converge on a common postsynaptic LTD maintenance mechanism, such that hetero- and homosynaptic induction produce similar alterations in glutamate synapse efficacy. We report that in the dorsolateral and ventrolateral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), recruitment of Gq-linked receptors by glutamate or NE initiates mechanistically distinct forms of postsynaptically maintained LTD and these LTDs are differentially regulated by stress. exposure. In particular, we show that although both mGluR5- and α1-adrenergic receptor (AR)-dependent LTDs involve postsynaptic endocytosis. the α1-AR-initiated LTD exclusively involves modulation of signaling through calcium-permeable AMPA receptors. Further, α1-AR- but not mGluR5-dependent LTD is disrupted by restraint stress. α1-AR LTD is also impaired in mice chronically exposed to ethanol. Abstract: Cerebellar Purkinje cells have the most elaborate dendritic trees among neurons in the brain. To date, the contributions of calcium-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) in calcium signaling and dendrite formation of Purkinje cells remain to be elucidated. In the present study, therefore, we examined the effects of 1-naphthyl acetyl spermine (NAS), a blocker of CP-AMPARs, on dendrite formation by cultured Purkinje cells. NAS markedly inhibited elongation and branching of Purkinje cell dendrites. Calcium imaging experiments using caged glutamate demonstrated that NAS inhibits the increase of intracellular calcium concentration in Purkinje cells after glutamate release. These results suggest that calcium signaling mediated through CP-AMPARs plays an important role in Purkinje cell dendrite formation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders characterized by memory deficits. Although no drug has given promising results, synaptic dysfunction-modulating agents might be considered potential candidates for alleviating this disorder. Pinoresinol, a lignan found in Forsythia suspensa , is a memory-enhancing agent with excitatory synaptic activation. In the present study, we tested whether pinoresinol reduces learning and memory and excitatory synaptic deficits in an amyloid β (Aβ)-induced AD-like mouse model. Pinoresinol enhanced hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) through calcium-permeable AMPA receptor, which was mediated by Akt activation. Moreover, pinoresinol ameliorated LTP deficits in amyloid β (Aβ)-treated hippocampal slices via Akt signaling. Oral administration of pinoresinol ameliorated Aβ-induced memory deficits without sensory dysfunction. Moreover, AD-like pathology, including neuroinflammation and synaptic deficit, were ameliorated by pinoresinol administration. Summary Ca2+-permeable AMPA-type glutamate receptors (CP-AMPARs) containing GluA1 but lacking GluA2 subunits contribute to multiple forms of synaptic plasticity, including long-term potentiation (LTP), but mechanisms regulating CP-AMPARs are poorly understood. A-kinase anchoring protein (AKAP) 150 scaffolds kinases and phosphatases to regulate GluA1 phosphorylation and trafficking, and trafficking of AKAP150 itself is modulated by palmitoylation on two Cys residues. Here, we developed a palmitoylation-deficient knockin mouse to show that AKAP150 palmitoylation regulates CP-AMPAR incorporation at hippocampal synapses. Using biochemical, super-resolution imaging, and electrophysiological approaches, we found that palmitoylation promotes AKAP150 localization to recycling endosomes and the postsynaptic density (PSD) to limit CP-AMPAR basal synaptic incorporation. In addition, we found that AKAP150 palmitoylation is required for LTP induced by weaker stimulation that recruits CP-AMPARs to synapses but not stronger stimulation that recruits GluA2-containing AMPARs. Thus, AKAP150 palmitoylation controls its subcellular localization to maintain proper basal and activity-dependent regulation of synaptic AMPAR subunit composition.
