Addition of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (C(n)-mim) cations 3-5 to a mixture of bis-phosphonium cation 2 and sodium p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene (1) in the presence of lanthanide ions results in the selective binding of an imidazolium cation into the cavity of the calixarene. The result is a multi-layered solid material with an inherently flexible interplay of the components. Incorporating ethyl-, n-butyl- or n-hexyl-mim cations into the multi-layers results in significant perturbation of the structure, the most striking effect is the tilting of the plane of the bowl-shaped calixarene relative to the plane of the multi-layer, with tilt angles of 7.2, 28.9 and 65.5 degrees , respectively. The lanthanide ions facilitate complexation, but are not incorporated into the structures and, in all cases, the calixarene takes on a 5- charge, with one of the lower-rim phenolic groups deprotonated. ROESY NMR experiments and other (1)H NMR spectroscopy studies establish the formation of 1:1 supermolecules of C(n)-mim and calixarene, regardless of the ratio of the two components, and indicate that the supermolecules undergo rapid exchange on the NMR spectroscopy timescale.

The inclusion of o-carborane by p-Bu(t)-calix[7,9]arenes has been investigated by solid state and solution studies, with both resulting complexes in the solid state being rich in carborane with the ratio of calixarene to carborane at 1 : 7 and 2 : 7 respectively. The carboranes reside in clefts within the calixarenes which arise from specific local conformations of adjacent phenolic groups, or are included in the extended structure through other interplay of the calixarenes and carboranes in such clefts.

In toluene fullerene C(70) forms 2:1 complexes with p-benzylcalix[5]arene (1) and p-phenylcalix[5]arene (2), [C(70) subset1(2)].6(C(7)H(8)) and [C(70) subset2(2)].7(C(7)H(8)). The fullerene molecules are completely shrouded by two calix[5]arenes in addition to terminal benzyl groups from other supermolecules, [C(70) subset1(2)], and solvent. Within the capsule-like supermolecules the calixarenes have distinctly different arrangements relative to the principal axis of the fullerene; for [C(70) subset1(2)].6(C(7)H(8)) the oxygen planes of the two calixarenes are skewed by 37.0 and 47.5 degrees , whereas in [C(70) subset2(2)].7(C(7)H(8)) the principal axes of the fullerene and the two encapsulating calixarenes are more closely aligned with the corresponding angles at 9.7 and 8.6 degrees , and features a pentaphenyl inter-calixarene embrace. The Hirshfeld surfaces of these two complexes have been investigated for a detailed understanding of the orientation and nature of interactions of C(70) with the cavitand-type molecules and toluene.

In the presence of lanthanide ions, a Co(III) sepulchrate cation [Co(diHOsar)]3+ and sodium p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene form a 1:1 host-guest complex which is self-assembled into a zeolite-like lattice network comprised of parallel, single stranded helices.

Four multi-component complexes based on p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene anion, the methyltriphenylphosphonium cation, lanthanide ions (Gd(III)) and different ionic liquid-based cations (1-methyl-3-butylimidazolium, 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium and 1,4-bis((3-methylimidazolidinyl)methyl)benzene) were synthesised and structurally characterised. Common bilayer arrangements are formed in the extended structures of all four complexes, though the bilayer thicknesses varies depending on the components involved. Molecular capsule formation is facilitated by the inclusion of methyltriphenylphosphonium, 1-methyl-3-butylimidazolium and 1,4-bis((3-methylimidazolidinyl)methyl)benzene cations, but not in the case of the 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium cation. Molecular capsule size depends on the nature of the included guest cation, and methyltriphenylphosphonium cations fill compact spaces between calixarenes in these new bilayer arrays. Structural studies on p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene coordination compounds involving diverse metal ions with respect to their size and charge, caesium(I), copper(II) and neodymium(III) are reported. The metal coordination-driven self-assembly forms metallosupramolecules, either as a two-dimensional (2 D) or a three-dimensional (3D) network while retaining the commonly established bilayer array for p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene. The complex (Cs5-p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene-H+)·6H2O has five crystallographically independent caesium(I) ions with high coordination numbers. In the divalent complex {[Cu3(H2O)12-2(p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene)]2-}·2([Cu(H2O)5])2+·2NO3-·7H2O, two different copper(II) coordination environments are present, one with octahedral stereochemistry while bridging two opposing calixarenes with the other having a square pyramidal geometry involving one sulfonate group. Two multi-component crystal structures comprising a carboxylic acid-functionalized imidazolium zwitterion, a p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene anion and aquated metal ion (Na+ or Y3+) with or without an auxiliary component (the 3-methoxyphenyl-triphenylphosphonium cation) are reported. The carboxylic acid-functionalized imidazolium ion binds either as a monodentate or a bidentate ligand depending on the nature of the metal ions, and a bi-layer arrangement prevails in the extended structure regardless of the type of metal ion employed or presence/lack of auxiliary component. The synthesis and characterization of 5,11,17,23-tetra- tert-butyl-25-hydroxy-26,27,28-tris(tetrazol-5-ylmethoxy)calix[4]arene is reported. Purification of the macrocycle required the use of preparative HPLC techniques. The macrocycle was found to be a poorer ligand for complexation of lanthanoid cations than the bis(tetrazole) analogue, but somewhat more effective than the tetrakis(tetrazole)-substituted derivative. Two metal complexes of the tris(tetrazole)-calixarene were structurally characterised. A polymeric sodium salt of the tris(tetrazole)-calixarene was isolated from a solution containing yttrium and a sodium acetate buffer. A praseodymium complex was isolated in the presence of an ammonium acetate buffer, where the calixarene acts as a unidentate ligand, bound to the metal atom through one tetrazole N-atom. Increasing the amount of buffer resulted in the crystallisation of a metal-free ammonium salt of the calixarene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A molecular capsule based on two p-sulfonated calix[4]arenes along with Gd(iii) coordination spheres arranged around the equator of the capsule effectively confined a 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation, affording a relatively small capsule size. For a bis-imidazolium cation, only one of the imidazole rings is included in the calixarene cavity with the other ring extending towards a sulfonate group of an adjacent calixarene. Thus, the included molecule breaches the equatorial seam of the larger capsule, but here there is no incorporation of Gd(iii). In both complexes the capsules themselves are arranged such that the calixarenes are in bilayer arrangements, with (3-methoxyphenyl)triphenylphosphonium cations at the interface of the hydroxyl groups of the calixarene. Solution mediated organization of p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene, benzyltriphenylphosphonium cations, and bis(triethylammoniomethyl)-benzene dications in the solid state results in the ammonium dications preferentially binding in the cavities of two opposing calixarenes which take on a −3 charge, with the phosphonium cations arranged in a separate 2D sheet relative to the calixarene bilayer. p-Sulfonatocalix[4]arenes with three of the lower rim hydroxyl groups substituted with N'-cyanocarbamimidate groups crystallizes in the 1,3-alternate conformation rather than the common cone conformation for unsubstituted calixarenes, which also results in departure from the common bilayer arrangement of sulfonated calix[4]arenes. The new calixarene formed via reaction of the phenolic moieties of the p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene with the dicyanamide anion derived from an ionic liquid with an imidazolium cation.
