Objective: To determine the frequency of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) associated or not with oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD), and the epidemiological profile and traditional risk factors in Latin America. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted in 17 Latin American centres. There were included cases of OSCC, analysing age, gender, OSCC and their association with previous OPMD. Clinicopathological variables were retrieved. The condition of sequential‐OSCC versus OSCC‐de novo (OSCC‐dn) was analysed concerning the aforementioned variables. Quantitative variables were analysed using Student's t‐test, and qualitative variables with chi‐square. Results: In total, 2705 OSCC were included with a mean age of 62.8 years old. 55.8% were men. 53.75% of the patients were smokers and 38% were common drinkers. The lateral tongue border was the most affected site (24.65%). There were regional variations in OPMD, being leukoplakia the most frequent. Of the overall 2705 OSCC cases, 81.4% corresponded to OSCC‐dn, while s‐OSCC were 18.6%. Regarding lip vermillion SCC, 35.7% corresponded to de novo lip SCC and 64.3% were associated with previous OPMD. Conclusions: In Latin America, OSCC‐dn seems to be more frequent with regional variations of some clinical and histopathological features. Oral competence is an important functional component of all patients affected with oral cavity malignancy who are undergoing different treatment modalities. Our primary objectives were to assess and compare the functional outcomes of patients with carcinoma lip undergoing various therapeutic interventions at our institution on the basis of FIGS (Functional Intra Oral Glasgow Scale) and FLiGS (Functional Lip Glasgow Scale) scoring systems. Between January 2021 and April 2022, 23 patients who were histologically confirmed with carcinoma lip were included in our analysis on accrual and were followed up post treatment. A questionnaire was given to the patients translated into their native language, and the responses were analyzed based on the FIGS (Functional Intra Oral Glasgow Score) and FLiGS (Functional Lip Glasgow Scale). Total number of patients that underwent surgical intervention were 78.3% (n-18), and the patients who underwent concurrent chemo-radiotherapy were 21.7% (n-5). Based on the average FIGS and FLIGS scoring and on the responses given by the patients, primary closure and local flap reconstruction scored relatively better (FIGS 15/FLIGS 25) than other forms of reconstruction techniques. Patients undergoing forehead flap reconstruction had responded to have a poorer functional outcome (FIGS 12/FLIGS 22]. Patients undergoing concurrent chemo-radiotherapy also had poor functional outcomes due to post radiotherapy sequelae as per the scoring system. Oncological outcomes in oral cavity malignancies need to emphasize on the functional component of these patients. Background and introduction: Statisticians rank oral and lip cancer sixth in global mortality at 10.2%. Mouth opening and swallowing are challenging. Hence, most oral cancer patients only report later stages. They worry about surviving cancer and receiving therapy. Oral cancer severely affects QOL. QOL is affected by risk factors, disease site, and treatment. Using oral cancer patient questionnaires, we use light gradient Boost Tree classifiers to predict life quality. Methods: DIAS records were used for 111 oral cancer patients. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer's QLQ-C30 and QLQ-HN43 were used to document the findings. Anyone could enroll, regardless of gender or age. The IHEC/SDC/PhD/OPATH-1954/19/TH-001 Institutional Ethical Clearance Committee approved this work. After informed consent, patients received the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-HN43 questionnaires. Surveys were in Tamil and English. Overall, QOL ratings covered several domains. We obtained patient demographics, case history, and therapy information from our DIAS (Dental Information Archival Software). Enrolled patients were monitored for at least a year. After one year, the EORTC questionnaire was retaken, and scores were recorded. This prospective analytical exploratory study at Saveetha Dental College, Chennai, India, examined QOL at diagnosis and at least 12 months after primary therapy in patients with histopathologically diagnosed oral malignancies. We measured oral cancer patients' quality of life using data preprocessing, feature selection, and model construction. A confusion matrix was created using light gradient boosting to measure accuracy. Results: Light gradient boosting predicted cancer patients' quality of life with 96% accuracy and 0.20 log loss. Objective: To investigate the trends and patterns of the cancer burden among the elderly in different regions of India at a subnational level. Methods: Data were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Studies India Compare 2019. Prevalence rate, disability‐adjusted life years (DALY), and annual percentage change techniques were used to analyze data. Results: The three age groups with the highest prevalence of cancer were those aged 60–64 years, 65–69 years, and 70–74 years. In 2019, The prevalence of cancer among the elderly ranged from 7048.815 in Karnataka to 5743.040 in Jharkhand. Kerala has the most significant annual percentage change in the cancer prevalence rate of 0.291 between 1990 and 2019. The highest DALY rate was observed among individuals aged 80–84 years in 2019. That year, the DALY rate among the elderly was 8112.283 in India. The top five cancers with higher DALY rates among the elderly in India in 2019 were tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer (908.473), colon and rectum cancer (752.961), stomach cancer (707.464), breast cancer (597.881), and lip and oral cavity cancer (557.637). Conclusion: Elderly individuals demonstrated a higher vulnerable to cancer compared to other age groups. There is a need for state‐specific government intervention to minimize the risk of cancer among the elderly due to the heterogeneity in the burden of cancer across Indian states. Objectives: To identify the immunohistochemical pattern of non‐tumoral epithelium adjacent to lip cancer (ANTE) to unveil molecular alterations and potential biomarkers in lip cancer patients. Materials and Methods: A systematic search at MEDLINE, EMBASE and proceedings Web of Science, OpenGrey and WorldCat. The PICOS outline (Population: lip cancer patients; Intervention: immunostaining with biomarkers in surgical specimens; Comparisons: ANTE versus LC; Outcomes: primary—to identify the immunohistochemical pattern of peritumoral epithelium and secondary—to assess the immunoreactivity of LC epithelium; and Study design: cross‐sectional, case‐control and cohort studies). Results: A total of 339 records were identified. Seven studies reporting on ANTE and LCs were included in the qualitative synthesis, and 4 of them (p53 immunostaining) were selected for meta‐analysis. In the ANTE group, the pooled prevalence of p53 was 0.74 (95% CI: 0.66 – 0.82), while in the lip squamous cell carcinoma group this prevalence was 0.83 (95% CI: 0.75 – 0.89). Conclusions: Similar immunoexpression was found in lip epithelium adjacent to lip carcinoma, even in epithelia with normal appearance or mild histological alterations. Background: Identifying the prevalence of orofacial malignancies is essential to provide health-care programs and services for a specific population. This study aimed to specify the prevalence, clinical and histopathological features of oral malignancies in Sulaimani for over 12 years. Methods: All archived reports for orofacial specimens from 2008 to 2019 were collected from three major centers in Sulaimani governorate. The demographic data, date, type of surgery, lesion's site, and diagnosis were recorded. The ICD-10 coding was specified for each case. A Chi-square test was used to assess differences between genders. A one-way ANOVA test was applied to analyze the differences in mean age distributions among different sites of oral malignancies and oral squamous cell carcinoma histopathological grades. P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Orofacial malignant lesions account for 14.53% of the total sample. Patients' mean age was (55.46 ± 18.48) years, and they were predominantly males (M: F ratio = 1.15:1). The tongue was the frequently affected site (14.8%). A Chi-square test showed no significant difference between genders concerning age (P = 0.118), years of registration (P = 0.28), and site (P = 0.29). The C06 (represents; cheek mucosa C06.0, the vestibule of mouth C06.1, retromolar area C06.2, and other unspecified parts of mouth C06.8) was the most frequent topographical ICD-code (18.1%). Carcinoma was a frequent malignancy (63.2%). OSCC was the most common lesion (56.4%). It commonly affects males, and the tongue was the frequent site (24.1%) followed by lip (17.8%). Conclusions: There is a slight increase in the registered oral malignancies in Sulaimani city over 12 years; they were predominated in males, in 61–70 years old patients, and being oral squamous cell carcinoma types. Objectives: This study was aimed to overview the treatment protocols of lip cancer and find out a cutoff point of tumor diameter and depth of invasion (DOI) for the survival parameters. Materials and Methods: One hundred and ninety‐one patients with lip SCC were studied. Results: The average age of the patients was 62 years. Among 191 patients, 82.7% of the patients were men, 96.4% of them had lower lip cancer, and 84% were staged as early (pT1, pT2). Primary tumor excision with neck dissection was applied to 62.3% of the patients. Lymph node metastases rate was found to be 11%, and recurrence rate was 6.3%. There was statistically significant difference in between the tumor diameters and DOI values of patients with and without metastasis, and recurrence (p < 0.01, p < 0.05, respectively). Regarding to the lymph node metastasis, the optimal cutoff point was found to be 7.5 mm for DOI and 21.5 mm for tumor diameter. Regarding to the recurrence, the optimal cutoff point was found to be 7.5 mm for DOI and 24.5 mm for tumor diameter. Conclusion: T2 lip cancer patients also seem to be in at‐risk group for metastasis and recurrence. Background: The objective of this study was to analyse the incidence of lip malignancies in Germany.Methods: Data from population-based cancer registries covering a population of 39 million inhabitants from 14 federal states were pooled. Lip malignancies were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Age-standardised incidence rates and annual percentage changes in the incidence trends of lip cancer (C00), melanoma of the lip (C43.0), and non-melanoma skin cancer of the lip (C44.0) were calculated.Results: Lip cancer (C00) incidence rate was 0.57/0.15 per 100 000 (men/women) in 2003 and 0.52/0.18 in 2012. In women, the change was statistically significant. Melanoma lip cancer (C43.0) incidence rates both in men and women were 0.02 in 2003 and 0.01 in 2012. Incidence rates of non-melanoma skin cancer of the lip (C44.0) significantly increased from 1.6 in 2003 to 2.1 in 2012 in men and from 1.5 in 2003 to 2.4 in 2012 in women. In lip cancer (C00), the vast majority (98% in men/93% in women) were squamous cell carcinomas and 2%/7% were basal cell carcinoma. In men, 56% of non-melanoma skin cancers (C44.0) were squamous cell carcinoma, whereas these were only 27% in women.Conclusions: The incidences of non-melanoma skin cancer of the lip increased over time in Germany in both sexes. Lip cancer incidence increased in women, while it stayed stable in men. Melanoma of the lip did not change in incidence. This paper referred to malignant tumours of lips. The objectives of this study were to present distribution of malignant diseases of lips according to patients' gender and age, localization of tumour, pathological analysis and to present a five-year survival analysis on these patients, as well as to assess the importance of early diagnosis and medical treatment. A ten-year retrospective clinical and observational follow-up study of patients treated at Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery, Clinical Centre University of Sarajevo for malignant tumours of lips, in period from January 1998 to December 2007, was performed. Total of 1,271 patients were admitted for treatment, of which 139 patients had tumour of lips. Results showed that at our Clinic we treated more male patients with malignant lips tumours than female ones (gender ratio 2.3 men to 1 woman); mostly older patients, with almost half of them being at age 60 years or more. Regarding histopathology, tumours were predominantly squamous cell carcinoma type. Life-table analysis showed a five-year survival rate of 71.23%. Nevertheless, this study should be seen as the pilot study. One with similar methodology but more extensive - regarding number of patients, including more detailed anamnestic data and longer follow-up period - should be conducted, in order to clarify correlation of all demographic and risk factors, treatment data and exact survival times and rates. Approximately 5% of oncology patients develop cutaneous metastases, with only a small number of these patients (less than 1%) having metastatic skin lesions as the first sign of their visceral cancer. Metastases tend to occur on skin surfaces in the vicinity of the primary tumor. However, any site may be affected by cutaneous metastases. Skin metastases can present with several morphologies including, albeit rarely, keratoacanthoma-like lesions. Keratoacanthoma is a keratinous tumor that morphologically appears as a nodule with a central keratin-filled crater. This article reviews the characteristics of oncology patients whose cutaneous metastases mimicked a keratoacanthoma, including illustrations from our patient, a 53-year-old Caucasian man whose metastatic esophageal adenocarcinoma not only presented with a keratoacanthomalike tumor on his upper lip but also a forehead macule and a scalp nodule. We also report keratoacanthomalike presentations from literature cases of breast cancer, chondrosarcoma, and pulmonary malignancies. The lesions were discovered 3-24 months after diagnosis of visceral cancer and led to the discovery of unsuspected lung cancer in two patients. Most of the patients (60%) died within 2 months of discovery of the keratoacanthoma-like cutaneous metastases. We also reviewed the literature and discuss other morphologies of cutaneous metastases in patients whose primary tumors were in the breast, lung, and esophagus. In addition, we review from the literature other examples of tumors that present as metastatic nodules on the scalp. The possibility of cutaneous metastasis should be entertained and pathologic evaluation should be considered in an oncology patient with underlying visceral malignancy who develops a keratoacanthomalike lesion. Summary: Reconstructive surgery of the lips after resection of tumors requires a complete understanding of the anatomy of this region. Most lip cancers remain localized and grow slowly, with a propensity for superficial rather than vertical spread. From January 1983 to December of 2005, 899 patients underwent reconstructive surgery for skin tumors involving the lips. SCCs were the most frequent skin tumors on male patients whereas BCCs were most common on the female patients. The lower lip was the anatomic zone most frequently involved in our series. Preoperative evaluation of the patients was performed in all cases. In the last five-years, we have performed preoperative fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of the tumor. The FNA sample was then examined by ThinPrep technique (Cytolyt; Cytyc, Co, Boxborough, MA, USA). In our series, from the 550 patients who had a five-year follow-up we observed 62 recurrences of the primary tumor. The five-year recurrence rate was 11.28%. Background The Australian Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) database was initiated in 1993 by the Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia (SCFA) with the aim of collecting prospective data, and involved all Mohs surgeons in the country. Objectives To present a large series of patients with cutaneous lip tumours treated with MMS in Australia between 1993 and 2002. Methods This prospective multicentre case series included all patients with cutaneous lip tumours who were monitored by the SCFA. The main outcome measures were patient demographics, reason for referral, duration of tumour, site, preoperative tumour size and postoperative defect size, recurrences prior to MMS, histological subtypes, perineural invasion and 5-year recurrence after MMS. Results There were 581 patients (66·1% women and 33·9% men, P < 0·0001) with a mean ± SD age of 58 ± 15 years. The upper lip was the most common site involved (81·1%). Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was diagnosed in 82·3%, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in 16·5%, Bowen's disease (BD) in 0·7% and microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC) in 0·5% of cases. BCC was more common on the upper lip and in women, whereas SCC was more common on the lower lip and in men ( P < 0·0001). Most upper lip tumours occurred in women (75·4%), whereas most lower lip tumours occurred in men (73·6%). SCC was associated with a larger tumour and postoperative defect size compared with the other tumours. The 5-year recurrence for BCC was 3·0%, and there were no cases of recurrence for SCC, BD or MAC. Conclusions BCC was the most common cutaneous lip tumour managed by MMS, and was significantly more common on the upper lip and in women. We studied a consecutive series of 95 patients undergoing radical surgical resection of lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC) to assess the correlation between lymph node status and several prognostic variables, such as sex and age, tumour size, histologic grading, maximal microscopic tumour thickness, perineural infiltration and p27Kip1 protein status, to see which of these might be predictive of the development of lymph node metastases. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant association between node status and tumour size, histological grading, maximal thickness, perineural invasion and p27Kip1 protein expression; additionally to node metastasis, low p27Kip1 protein expression was significant correlated with high microscopic thickness. These results indicate that lower lip squamous cell carcinomas of >2 cm, with G3-G4 histological grading, maximal thickness of >6 mm, perineural invasion and low p27Kip1 protein expression (LI <19.7%) are at high risk for the development of lymph node metastases. A population-based survey was conducted in 35 municipalities in Northern Finland to assess the incidence of lip cancer as well as the patient and tumour characteristics in cases diagnosed between 1983 and 1997. A total of 96 new patients emerged. The age-standardised incidence (per 100,000 years) of lip cancer in men decreased from 4.8 in 1983-1987 to 1.4 in 1993-1997. The incidences in women were 0.30 to 0.36, respectively. The median age of the patients increased from 66 to 73 years through the years. Overall, 90% of the patients had at least one of the known risk factors, namely rural domicile, outdoor occupation or smoking. The median duration of symptoms also remained the same, as did the median size and location of the tumour at diagnosis. In contrast, spread to regional lymph nodes became rare during the period. Background:The internationally recognised American Joint Committee on Cancer (tumour–node–metastasis) staging system utilises tumour size to determine stage. Other factors (i.e. tumour depth) may provide additional prognostic information.Method:A thorough retrospective analysis was performed of 68 patients with primary lip squamous cell carcinoma operated on or discussed by the Darling Downs Health Service between 2005 and 2013.Results:Twelve patients developed lymphatic spread. There was a statistically significant increased risk of nodal metastasis in: patients with tumours of increased thickness (U = 103.50; degrees of freedom = 68; p < 0.001), those with a larger overall tumour size (U = 163.50; degrees of freedom = 68; p = 0.005) and patients living further from the treatment centre (U = 199.00; degrees of freedom = 68; p = 0.018).Conclusion:It may be reasonable that other factors are considered for staging of lip squamous cell carcinomas, in combination with tumour–node–metastasis staging. Depth of invasion may have utility in prognosis and treatment; however, larger prospective analysis needs to be performed.
