Prompt development of electronic devices and sensors raised the requirement for design/fabrication of advanced energy sources capable of providing considerable amount of energy for consuming platforms through practical nanotechnological approaches. For this aim, we have developed a highly active 2D nanostructure consisted of reinforced conductive polypyrrole (PPy) with decorated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with hybrid metal oxide complex of Ni/W (PPy-G-Ni-W) toward supercapacitor applications. The hybrid 2D platform showed remarkable specific capacitance of 597 F.g(-1) and 557 F.g(-1) using CV and GCD analyses, respectively, through using three-electrode system. The developed supercapacitor exhibited fantastic stability upon maintaining 98.2% of its total performance after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. Likewise, the applicable two-electrode device using same electrode configurations composed of PPy-G-Ni-W//PPy-G-Ni-W showed specific capacitances of 361 F.g(-1) and 342 F.g(-1) at scan rate and current density of 2 mV.s(-1) and 0.5 A.g(-1) using CV and GCD techniques, respectively. Outcome of optimum supercapacitance configuration consisted of two-electrode system exhibits ideal energy density of 14.4 Wh.kg(-1) at power density of 275 W.kg(-1). More importantly, the device preserved 96.4% of its total specific capacitance after 5000 charge-discharge cycles which highlighting the excellent capacitive capability along with ultra-stability of the developed platform toward real energy applications.

Ionogels are semi-solid, ion conductive and mechanically compliant materials that hold promise for flexible, shape-conformable and all-solid-state energy storage devices. However, identifying facile routes for manufacturing ionogels into devices with highly resilient electrode/electrolyte interfaces remains a challenge. Here we present a novel all-in-gel supercapacitor consisting of an ionogel composite electrolyte and bucky gel electrodes processed using a one-step method. Compared with the mechanical properties and ionic conductivities of pure ionogels, our composite ionogels offer enhanced self-recovery (retaining 78% of mechanical robustness after 300 cycles at 60% strain) and a high ionic conductivity of 8.7 mS cm−1, which is attributed to the robust amorphous polymer phase that enables facile permeation of ionic liquids, facilitating effective diffusion of charge carriers. We show that development of a supercapacitor with these gel electrodes and electrolytes significantly improves the interfacial contact between electrodes and electrolyte, yielding an area specific capacitance of 43 mF cm−2 at a current density of 1.0 mA cm−2. Additionally, through this all-in-gel design a supercapacitor can achieve a capacitance between 22–81 mF cm−2 over a wide operating temperature range of −40 °C to 100 °C at a current density of 0.2 mA cm−2.

Flexible paper electrodes for supercapacitors were prepared with partially-exfoliated graphite and polypyrrole as the active materials. Graphite was coated on paper with pencil drawing and then electrochemically exfoliated using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique to obtain the exfoliated graphite (EG)-coated paper (EG-paper). Polypyrrole (PPy) doped with β-naphthalene sulfonate anions was deposited on EG-paper through in-situ polymerization, leading to the formation of PPy-EG-paper. The as-prepared PPy-EG-paper showed a high electrical conductivity of 10.0 S·cm−1 and could be directly used as supercapacitor electrodes. The PPy-EG-paper electrodes gave a remarkably larger specific capacitance of 2148 F∙g−1 at a current density of 0.8 mA∙cm−2, compared to PPy-graphite-paper (848 F∙g−1). The capacitance value of PPy-EG-paper could be preserved by 80.4% after 1000 charge/discharge cycles. In addition, the PPy-EG-paper electrodes demonstrated a good rate capability and a high energy density of 110.3 Wh∙kg−1 at a power density of 121.9 W∙kg−1. This work will pave the way for the discovery of efficient paper-based electrode materials.

Research, design, fabrication and results of various screen printed capacitive humidity sensors is presented in this paper. Two types of capacitive humidity sensors have been designed and fabricated via screen printing on recycled paper and cardboard, obtained from the regional paper and cardboard industry. As printing ink, commercially available silver nanoparticle-based conductive ink was used. A considerable amount of work has been devoted to the humidity measurement methods using paper as a dielectric material. Performances of different structures have been tested in a humidity chamber. Relative humidity in the chamber was varied in the range of 35%–80% relative humidity (RH) at a constant temperature of 23 °C. Parameters of interest were capacitance and conductance of each sensor material, as well as long term behaviour. Process reversibility has also been considered. The results obtained show a mainly logarithmic response of the paper sensors, with the only exception being cardboard-based sensors. Recycled paper-based sensors exhibit a change in value of three orders of magnitude, whereas cardboard-based sensors have a change in value of few 10s over the entire scope of relative humidity range (RH 35%–90%). Two different types of capacitor sensors have been investigated: lateral (comb) type sensors and modified, perforated flat plate type sensors. The objective of the present work was to identify the most important factors affecting the material performances with humidity, and to contribute to the development of a sensor system supported with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip directly on the material, for use in smart packaging applications. Therefore, the authors built a passive and a battery-supported wireless module based on SL900A smart sensory tag’s IC to achieve UHF-RFID functionality with data logging capability.

We present a high-capacity pseudocapacitor based on a hierarchical network architecture consisting of Co(3)O(4) nanowire network (nanonet) coated on a carbon fiber paper. With this tailored architecture, the electrode shows ideal capacitive behavior (rectangular shape of cyclic voltammograms) and large specific capacitance (1124 F/g) at high charge/discharge rate (25.34 A/g), still retaining ~94% of the capacitance at a much lower rate of 0.25 A/g. The much-improved capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability may be attributed to the unique hierarchical network structures, which improves electron/ion transport, enhances the kinetics of redox reactions, and facilitates facile stress relaxation during cycling.

Recycling hazardous wastes to produce value-added products is becoming essential for the sustainable progress of our society. Herein, highly porous carbon (1625 m2/g–1) is synthesized using waste tires as the precursor and used as supercapacitor electrode. The narrow pore size distribution (PSD) and high surface area led to a good charge storage capacity, especially when used as a three-dimensional nanoscaffold to polymerize polyaniline (PANI/TC). The composite film was highly flexible, conductive and exhibited a capacitance of 480 F/g–1 at 1 mV/s–1 with excellent capacitance retention up to 98% after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. The high capacitance and long cycle life were ascribed to the short diffusional paths, uniform PANI coating and tight confinement of the PANI in the inner pores of the tire-derived carbon via - interactions, which minimized the degradation of the PANI upon cycling. Here, we anticipate that the same strategy can be applied to deposit other pseudocapacitive materials with low-cost TC to achieve even higher electrochemical performance and longer cycle life, a key challenge for redox active polymers.

This paper describes low-cost, thin, and pliable touch pads constructed from a commercially available, metallized paper commonly used as packaging material for beverages and book covers. The associated electronics with the individual keys in the touch pads detect changes in capacitance or contact with fi ngers by using the effective capacitance of the human body and the electrical impedance across the tip of a fi nger. To create the individual keys, a laser cutter ablates lines through the fi lm of evaporated aluminum on the metallized paper to pattern distinct, conductive regions. This work includes the experimental characterization of two types of capacitive buttons and illustrates their use with applications in a keypad with 10 individually addressable keys , a keypad that conforms to a cube, and a keypad on an alarmed cardboard box. With their easily arrayed keys, environmentally benign material, and low cost, the touch pads have the potential to contribute to future developments in disposable, fl exible electronics, active, “smart” packaging, user interfaces for biomedical instrumentation, biomedical devices for the developing world, applications for monitoring animal and plant health, food and water quality, and disposable games (e.g., providers of content for consumer products). There is no simple method of integrating buttons with structures on single-use or throw-away devices. Current commercial buttons are not thin enough, inexpensive enough, or easy enough to array seamlessly with paper-based products for disposable applications.
