In order to overcome the limitations of the existing classical and solid-state Marx pulse generators, this paper proposes a new modular multilevel voltage-boosting Marx pulse generator (BMPG). The proposed BMPG has hardware features that allow modularity, redundancy, and scalability as well as operational features that alleviate the need of series-connected switches and allows generation of a wide range of pulse waveforms. In the BMPG, a controllable, low-voltage input boost converter supplies, via directing/blocking (D/B) diodes, two arms of a series modular multilevel converter half-bridge sub-modules (HB-SMs). At start up, all the arm's SM capacitors are resonantly charged in parallel from 0 V, simultaneously via directing diodes, to a voltage in excess of the source voltage. After the first pulse delivery, the energy of the SM capacitors decreases due to the generated pulse. Then, for continuous operation without fully discharging the SM capacitors or having a large voltage droop as in the available Marx generators, the SM capacitors are continuously recharged in parallel, to the desired boosted voltage level. Because all SMs are parallelly connected, the boost converter duty ratio is controlled by a single voltage measurement at the output terminals of the boost converter. Due to the proposed SMs structure and the utilization of D/B diodes, each SM capacitor is effectively controlled individually without requiring a voltage sensor across each SM capacitor. Generation of the commonly used pulse waveforms in electroporation applications is possible, while assuring balanced capacitors, hence SM voltages. The proposed BMPG has several topological variations such as utilizing a buck–boost converter at the input stage and replacing the HB-SM with full-bridge SMs. The proposed BMPG topology is assessed by simulation and scaled-down proof-of-concept experimentation to explore its viability for electroporation applications. This paper presents a drive system based on a modular multilevel converter (MMC) with high-frequency magnetic channels between adjacent-arm submodules (SMs), suitable for medium-voltage, high-power three-phase variable-speed machines. The configuration employs chains of dual half-bridge (DHB) modules linking adjacent SMs of three-phase symmetrical arms. The DHB modules are operating as power channels enabling energy exchange to restore the power imbalance among the SM capacitors. This allows arms’ ripple-powers to be entirely decoupled through bidirectional power transfer between adjacent-arm SMs, resulting in a near ripple-free SM capacitor voltage profile. Therefore, the MMC common problem of wide voltage fluctuation across SM capacitors is comprehensively solved, independent of the operating frequency. Additionally, a significant reduction in the sizing requirement of SM capacitance is achieved. The configuration is able to drive multimegawatt machines from standstill to the rated speed at the rated torque operating condition. In this paper, a dc–ac buck converter is proposed as a grid-side converter in high voltage dc (HVdc) transmission systems for high-power renewable energy source grid integration. The proposed architecture consists of multimodules of half-bridge voltage source converters (HB-VSCs). The dc terminals of the HB-VSCs are connected in series across the entire dc link (i.e., capacitor tapped), whereas their ac outputs are connected to multiwinding transformers to provide the three-phase terminals for ac grid integration. The proposed grid-connected capacitor-tapped multimodule converter (CT-MC) architecture, inspired from the HVdc shunt tap proposed by ABB, provides a dc–ac conversion with a relatively moderate voltage rating of semiconductor devices. It also provides operation with a lower number of semiconductor devices, gate driver circuits, voltage sensors, and lower total MVA rating of semiconductor devices (67%) compared with the conventional three-phase HB modular multilevel converter, which positively affects the system cost and reduces the computational burden of the employed controller. In this paper, the operational concept and control of the CT-MC are presented along with a capacitor voltage balancing approach. Simulation results are presented during normal and abnormal conditions to show the viability of the proposed architecture. This paper presents a dual modular multilevel converter (MMC) topology that utilizes energy exchange between adjacent-arm submodules (SMs), operating with out-of-phase modulation. The proposed configuration is applicable to medium-voltage high-power variable-speed drives incorporating open-end stator winding machines. A novel concept of power decoupling between adjacent-arm SMs in the dual MMC topology is realized through high-frequency transformer-based dc–dc converter modules. This concept offers a significant reduction in the sizing requirement of the SM capacitance and the stored energy in the MMC system, while avoiding the problem of wide voltage fluctuations of SM capacitors, especially at low operating frequencies. The proposed configuration can produce dc voltage; therefore, a machine speed range from zero speed to the rated speed is possible under the rated torque operating condition. The operating principles of the proposed dual MMC configuration are elaborated and necessary mathematical analysis is derived. In this paper, a new HVDC shunt tap is proposed. The proposed configuration consists of a unidirectional hybrid modular DC–DC converter followed by a voltage source converter for DC–AC conversion to feed a local AC network connected to the tap output terminals. The proposed DC–DC converter consists of a high-voltage valve, and series-connected unidirectional half-bridge Sub-Modules (SMs). Unlike Marx generator circuit concept, the DC–DC conversion in the proposed configuration is achieved by enabling simultaneous charging of series-connected capacitors (i.e. SMs capacitors), and sequential discharging of capacitors. Compared to Marx-generator based switched capacitor DC–DC converters, the proposed configuration has a lower number of semiconductor devices, which affects positively the system cost, and reduces the control complexity. This paper presents a new high-voltage pulse generator, which is based on positive and negative buck-boost (BB) converters fed from a relatively low voltage dc supply. The proposed generator is able to generate unipolar or bipolar high-voltage pulses via operating the BB converters with series or parallel connected outputs respectively using a common input dc source. The components of each converter are rated at half of the pulsed voltage magnitude in the unipolar mode. The converters in the proposed pulse generator operate in discontinuous conduction mode. This enhances system efficiency, as the circuit only operates when it is desired to generate a pulsed output voltage, otherwise the circuit is switched to idle mode with zero current. Detailed illustration of the proposed approach is presented along with a full design of the system components for given output pulse specifications. Bipolar repetitive high-voltage pulse generators are commonly used in modern pulsed power applications. Conventionally, bipolar high-voltage pulses can be generated by adding a high-voltage H-bridge at the output stage of a unipolar high-voltage pulse generator which increases complexity and cost of the bipolar high-voltage pulse generator. In this paper, a boost-inverter-based bipolar high-voltage pulse generator with high-voltage gain is proposed. The proposed generator can provide high-voltage bipolar output pulses with the desired specifications from a low input dc voltage. The proposed generator is based on employing two bidirectional boost dc–dc converters, where the load is connected differentially between the boost converters’ output terminals. In the proposed approach, four controlled switches are required. Only two out of these four switches are rated at the high-voltage output level which affects positively the system cost. Differential-mode buck-boost inverters have merits such as reduced switch number, ability to provide voltages higher or lower than the input voltage magnitude, improved efficiency, reduced cost and size, and increased power density, especially in low-power applications. There are five buck-boost inverters that can provide flexible output voltage without the need of a large electrolytic input side capacitor, which degrades the reliability of inverters. The continuous input current of these inverters is appropriate for maximum power point tracking operation in photovoltaic and fuel cells applications. Three of the five inverters can be isolated with high-frequency-link transformers where the common-mode leakage current can be mitigated. However, the performance and control of such converters have not been discussed in detail. In this paper, the five possible single-stage three-phase differential-mode buck-boost inverters with continuous input current are investigated and compared in terms of total losses, maximum ripple current, total harmonic distortion, and device and passive element ratings. In addition, the possible methods are presented for eliminating the input third-order harmonic current, resulting from the stored energy in the passive elements, as well as the output second-order harmonic currents. The ability for isolating the input and output sides of the inverters with a small–high frequency transformers is discussed. In order to generate bipolar high-voltage (HV) pulses across certain load from HV dc (HVdc) power supply, a voltage source inverter (VSI) stage should be inserted between the load and the supply. In order to meet the required HV level, series connection of semiconductor devices should be employed with dynamic voltage sharing between the involved devices. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) can be used instead of the conventional two-level VSI to alleviate the complexity introduced by the deployment of series-connected devices. The voltage level of the HVdc power supply and the voltage rating of the available semiconductor devices determine the suitable number of MMC voltage levels ( $N$ ). Capacitor voltage balancing is a vital issue for proper operation of the MMC. In general, conventional sensor-based balancing techniques require a significant amount of measurements, which increases the complexity of the system. In addition, the high dv/dt during switching times causes electromagnetic interference, which may adversely affect the accuracy of the measurements. In this paper, a sensorless voltage balancing technique is proposed for the MMC-based bipolar HV pulse generator that reduces the system sensitivity, cost, and complexity. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have become one of the most promising topologies for high-voltage dc–ac conversion. DC-side fault blocking capability of the MMC has prompted significant research in recent years. In this paper, a new switched capacitor submodule (SCSM) for MMCs is proposed which provides operation with DC fault blocking capability. In addition, successful voltage balancing is achieved with half the number of voltage sensors used with existing MMC cells. Generally, conventional sensor-based balancing techniques require a significant amount of measurements, 2m(N-1) voltage sensors, and 2m current sensors for an N-level m-phase MMC. The proposed cell will thus aid in reducing the complexity of the control system. A detailed illustration of the operational concept of the proposed architecture is presented in this paper. A comparison between the proposed SCSM and other existing MMC cells has been included to highlight the benefits of the proposed SCSM. A simulation model for an MMC-based HVDC system along with the proposed cell has been built to test its performance during normal as well as abnormal operating conditions. Pulsed electric field (PEF) can be used effectively in water treatment applications by passing infected water through two electrodes excited from a high voltage pulsed power supply which guarantees killing the harmful germs. In this paper, a new high-voltage pulse-generator with closed loop control of its output voltage is presented for treating water via underwater pulsed streamer corona discharge. The proposed generator is fed from a low AC voltage source (utility mains 220 V, 50 Hz) which makes it suitable for domestic applications. The proposed topology provides transformer-less operation which reduces the system size and enhances the overall efficiency. The proposed topology is based on capacitor-diode voltage multiplier (CDVM) circuits in conjunction with DC-DC converters (Boost and Buck-Boost converters). Offshore wind energy is now seen as a key contributor for the future renewable energy mix. HVDC technology is among the chief technologies enabling widespread use of offshore wind. Thanks to their numerous advantages, voltage-source converter-based-HVDC (VSC-HVDC) systems are expected to be the technology of choice. Unfortunately, most of VSCs are defenseless against dc-side faults, such as two-level VSCs, and half-bridge modular multilevel converters. This paper proposes the buck-boost inverter-based-HVDC system (BBI-HVDC) as a means to overcome the limitations of the classical VSC-HVDC systems. The proposed configuration does not only provide sinusoidal three-phase voltage, but also provides complete blocking capability of ac-side contributions during a dc-side fault. The latter is achieved by simply disabling the gating signals to the switches upon fault detection. The performance of the proposed system is illustrated during normal conditions, ac-side faults, and dc-side faults. A simulation case study comparing the performance of the conventional HVDC converters with the proposed system during dc-side faults is conducted. The simulation results reveal the promising performance under normal operation as well as a significant decrease in the dc fault current due to the ac-side contribution blocking capability of the BBI-HVDC system during dc-side faults. The three-phase, three-wire, five-level cascaded inverter is used as a medium-voltage shunt active power filter. The capacitor voltage-control technique used as a harmonic current extraction method for the two-level inverter is extended to the five-level shunt active power filter, with a technique proposed for balancing capacitor voltages. Predictive current control based on the supply current (not the active filter current) is employed. Two different space vector modulation (SVM) techniques viz., phase-shifted SVM and hybrid SVM, are used for multilevel inverter pulsewidth-modulation generation. The proposed five-level shunt active power filter is validated by simulation and practically for both modulation techniques. The conventional unipolar Marx generator can be employed for bipolar pulsed electric field by adding a high-voltage H-bridge at the load side which necessitates stacked switches. Alternatively, bipolar Marx generator with low-voltage switches can be employed. The existing bipolar Marx generators are typically fed from dc supplies, where polarized capacitors are employed. The capacitance of involved capacitors is selected such that the total energy stored in the generator's capacitors is higher than the bipolar pulse energy. As a result, polarized capacitors with relatively high capacitances are required. In addition, a high number of controlled switches per stage are required (at least four switches per stage). In this paper, a new solid-state bipolar Marx pulse generator with only three controlled switches per stage is proposed. The proposed generator is fed from sinusoidal/square ac voltage and non-polarized capacitors with low capacitance are employed. The proposed bipolar Marx-generator can be used effectively with resistive loads for exponential pulse generation. A detailed illustration of the proposed approach is presented and a discussion, to elucidate the differences between the proposed pulse generator and the other existing ones, are presented. Pulsed electric field is a commonly used and effective disinfection method in drinking water treatment applications. In this paper, a transformerless unipolar/bipolar high-voltage pulse generator is presented with well-regulated pulsed output voltage for drinking water treatment via underwater pulsed corona discharge. The proposed high-voltage pulse generator is fed from a relatively low-voltage dc supply. Then, capacitor–diode voltage multiplier centrally fed from a dc–dc boost converter is used to elevate the input voltage to a proper high-voltage level. Finally, a modular multilevel converter is employed to chop the elevated voltage into unipolar or bipolar pulsed output voltage (based on the user selection). The suggested arrangement provides a high-voltage gain with relatively low-voltage components, i.e., neither high-voltage nor series-connected components are needed in the proposed approach. A comparison between the proposed approach and the other Marx-Based pulse generators has been held to show the merits of the proposed approach. Repetitive high pulsed electric field (PEF) is an effective method to kill microorganisms and bacteria in water treatment applications. The PEF can be generated by applying high-power electromagnetic pulse across the sample to be treated. There are two main types of high-voltage pulse generators, namely, unipolar and bipolar. In this paper, a full-bridge submodule-based modular high-voltage pulse generator, having the ability to generate unipolar and bipolar high-voltage pulses with different shapes from a relatively low-voltage input dc supply, is proposed. In the proposed configuration, relatively low-voltage insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are required to generate the high-voltage bipolar pulses. A thyristor rated at the level of the pulsed output voltage is required in the proposed configuration to bypass the load during the charging process of capacitors. In the proposed approach, a thyristor is used instead of the self-commutated high-voltage switch (e.g., series-connected IGBTs), as thyristors are available with high-voltage ratings and possess inherent reverse voltage blocking capability. The four-switch three-phase (FSTP) inverter has been proposed as an innovative inverter design to reduce the cost, complexity, size, and switching losses of the dc–ac conversion system. Traditional FSTP inverter usually operates at half the dc input voltage; hence, the output line voltage cannot exceed this value. This paper proposes a novel design for the FSTP inverter based on the topology of the single-ended primary-inductance converter (SEPIC). The proposed topology provides pure sinusoidal output voltages with no need for output filter. Compared to traditional FSTP inverter, the proposed FSTP SEPIC inverter improves the voltage utilization factor of the input dc supply, where the proposed topology provides higher output line voltage which can be extended up to the full value of the dc input voltage. The integral sliding-mode control is used with the proposed topology to optimize its dynamics and to ensure robustness of the system during different operating conditions. Derivation of the equations describing the parameters design, components ratings, and the operation of the proposed SEPIC inverter is presented in this paper. DC fault protection is one challenge impeding the development of multiterminal dc grids. The absence of manufacturing and operational standards has led to many point-to-point HVDC links built at different voltage levels, which creates another challenge. Therefore, the issues of voltage matching and dc fault isolation are undergoing extensive research and are addressed in this paper. A quasi two-level operating mode of the modular multilevel converter is proposed, where the converter generates a square wave with controllable dv/dt by employing the cell voltages to create transient intermediate voltage levels. Cell capacitance requirements diminish and the footprint of the converter is reduced. The common-mode dc component in the arm currents is not present in the proposed operating mode. The converter is proposed as the core of a dc to dc transformer, where two converters operating in the proposed mode are coupled by an ac transformer for voltage matching and galvanic isolation. The proposed dc transformer is shown to be suitable for high-voltage high-power applications due to the low-switching frequency, high efficiency, modularity, and reliability. The dc transformer facilitates dc voltage regulation and near instant isolation of dc faults within its protection zone. A new operational mode for diode-clamped multilevel inverters termed quasi two-level operation is proposed. Such operation aims to avoid the imbalance problem of the dc-link capacitors for multilevel inverters with more than three levels and reduces the dc-link capacitance without introducing any significant voltage ripple at the dc-link nodes. The proposed operation can be generalized for any number of levels. This article proposes a new asymmetric neutral-point diode-clamped (NPC) multilevel converter for a four-phase switched reluctance motor drive. The inbuilt NPC clamping capacitors are used for both voltage level clamping and also as dc rail voltage-boosting capacitors to increase the output power of the motor, particularly for high-speed electric vehicle applications. The new converter allows regenerative energy to be recovered back to the dc supply for rapid machine braking, thus increasing overall drive efficiency. Analysis of the different modes of converter operation, along with design equations for sizing the voltage-boosting capacitors, is detailed. The nine-arm modular multilevel converter (9A-MMC) has been recently proposed as a reduced MMC topology variation for six-phase drive applications, with 25% reduction in the number of employed arms and associated components, compared to a standard dual three-phase MMC, however with a limited output voltage amplitude. This paper proposes a hybrid 9A-MMC comprised of half-bridge submodules (SMs) in both the upper and lower arms, and full-bridge SMs in the middle arms. By employing the negative-voltage state of the full-bridge SMs, the hybrid 9A-MMC avoids the limitations imposed on the dc-link voltage utilization, while achieving further reduction in the component count, compared to a standard 9A-MMC with identical half-bridge SMs. The operating principles of the proposed hybrid 9A-MMC are illustrated with mathematical analysis, whereas its characteristics are verified through both simulation and experimentation.
