Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery from the Amazon shelf-break region in the tropical West Atlantic reveals for the first time the two-dimensional horizontal structure of an intense Internal Solitary Wave (ISW) field, whose first surface manifestations are detected several hundred kilometers away from the nearest forcing bathymetry. Composite maps and an energy budget analysis (provided from the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model - HYCOM) help to identify two major ISW pathways emanating from the steep slopes of a small promontory (or headland) near 44°W and 0° N, which are seen to extend for over 500 km into the open ocean. Further analysis in the SAR reveals propagation speeds above 3ms-1, which are amongst the fastest ever recorded. ISWs main characteristics are further discussed based on a statistical analysis, and seasonal variability is found for one of the ISW sources. This seasonal variability is discussed in light of the North Equatorial Counter Current. The remote appearance of the ISW sea surface manifestations is explained by a late disintegration of the Internal Tide (IT), which is further investigated based on the SAR data and climatological monthly means (for stratification and currents). This paper presents the first investigation of the solubility of iron in mineral dust aerosols collected at the Henties Bay Aerosol Observatory (HBAO), in Namibia, from April to December 2017. During the study period, 10 intense dust events occurred. Elemental iron reached peak concentrations as high as 1.5 µg m -3 , significantly higher than background levels. These events are attributed to wind erosion of natural soils from the surrounding gravel plains of the Namib desert. The composition of the sampled dust is found to be overall similar to that of aerosols from northern Africa but is characterized by persistent and high concentrations of fluorine which are attributed to local fugitive dust. The fractional solubility of Fe (%SFe) for both the identified dust episodes and background conditions ranged between 1.3 % and 20 % and averaged at 7.9 % (± 4.1 %) and 6.8 (± 3.3 %), respectively. Even under background conditions, the %SFe was correlated with that of Al and Si. The solubility was lower between June and August and increased from September onwards during the austral spring. The relation to measured concentrations of particulate MSA (methane sulfonic acid), solar irradiance, and wind speed suggests a possible two-way interaction whereby marine biogenic emissions from the coastal Benguela upwelling to the atmosphere would increase the solubility of iron-bearing dust according to the photo-reduction processes. This first investigation points to the western coast of southern Africa as a complex environment with multiple processes and active exchanges between the atmosphere and the Atlantic Ocean, requiring further research. Festivals are important occasions that African societies have used to bring members together to foster unity and forge development of the communities. Traditional leaders also use festival to propitiate the ancestral spirits and deities to help dispel evil in the society. Throughout the year, festivals and durbars are held in various parts of the country for reunions and developmental purposes, and to the strengthen beliefs of the society. Festivals help the community and people to forge a closer bond with their ancestors and to ask for their protection. Festivals are also held in order to purify the whole state so that people can enter the New Year with confidence and hope. This paper, uses newspapers, interviews, major secondary works and articles on the internet as a source of data. It also uses qualitative and phenomenological methods to assess the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the celebration of the Fetu Afahye festival among the people of Cape Coast (Oguaa) in Ghana. The advent of the pandemic in Ghana altered the lives of the people in the traditional society since it led to the cancellation of the celebration of their festivals. The paper also examines how the non-observance of such festivals, especially the Fetu Afahye, impacted the ritual lives of the people. The paper concludes that even though a ban was placed on the celebration of festivals, due to its significance the traditional leaders found a way to perform the rituals associated with them in the face of the pandemic. This paper expands on financial literacy, access to digital finance, and SME performance in the Central Region of Ghana. First, the study analysed SMEs' digital platform knowledge and utilisation. It examined the relationship between financial literacy, access to digital finance, and SME performance. The paper discussed the mediating influence of access to digital finance on SMEs' financial literacy and performance. The study employed the quantitative research approach. Using the purposive sampling technique, a total of 400 responses were gathered from SMEs in Cape Coast, Mankessim, Assin Fosu, Agona Swedru, and Kasoa. The study used self-administered questionnaires to collect data. SPSS was employed to evaluate descriptive statistics. Results show that SMEs in the study areas use Mobile Money more than any other digital platform. PLS-SEM was used to investigate the relationship between financial literacy, digital finance, and SME performance. It was found that financial literacy positively affects access to digital finance. Also, access to digital finance improved performance. Access to digital finance mediates the relationship between financial literacy and SME performance. Access to digital finance is as crucial as financial literacy for increasing performance. Therefore, using digital platforms to trade would boost business performance. This paper examines the conflict in South African government development policy and law between a people-centred participatory approach and a neoliberal growth-centred approach. In particular, we discuss how this conflict has played out in a series of related court cases from 2021 to 2022. Methodologically, the case study is based on three court judgments with individual fishers, community representatives, civil society organisations and legal entities connected to the Eastern Cape Wild Coast as plaintiffs. The defendants were the multinational company Shell and subsidiaries with two South African government ministers. Our analytical framework was informed by Jürgen Habermas' 'instrumental reasoning' which was operationalised through Sherry Arnstein's heuristic model of participation. Different interpretations and expectations of public participation found in government policy documents and law in South Africa are explored. The findings underscore the central importance of appropriate levels of inclusion in public participation, as protected by the South African Constitution, in the process of Exploration Right Applications by mining companies. With increasing energy consumption in urban rail transit systems, researchers have paid significant attention to energy-saving train control. In this paper, we propose an effective train trajectory optimization method to reduce the energy consumption based on coasting control, in which coasting control regimes are added to balance running time and energy consumption. For better determining the starting points of coasting control regimes, the whole train running process is divided into several subintervals. Then, aiming to achieve energy efficiency, coasting regimes are added to the subintervals with high energy-saving effects, in which more energy consumption can be reduced with the same running time addition. Based on this, a coasting control method is proposed to generate energy-saving trajectories considering train dynamics, safety, and punctuality. In addition, the proposed method can solve the multisection energy-saving train trajectory optimization problem to obtain optimal running time schemes and related trajectories. Finally, numerical examples based on one of the Beijing metro lines are implemented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that, for the single-section train control problem, the proposed coasting control algorithm can achieve significant energy-saving effects compared to the practical trajectory and calculate energy-saving trajectory in shorter computation times compared to the dynamic programming method. Green spaces are fast depleting in many urban areas across the world. This contributes to carbon dioxide emissions and affects the local climate and well-being of city residents. Yet, there is limited empirical research on the spatio-temporal patterns of change in urban green spaces and linkages to human well-being, especially in coastal cities where urban green spaces additionally act as critical flood controls. This paper assesses the changing pattern of green space cover in Cape Coast Metropolis and the factors associated with the perceived well-being of residents. Using a mixed-methods design, we obtained open-source geospatial data and gathered primary data through field observations, and in-depth and semi-structured interviews. These data were analysed using geospatial, statistical, and textual techniques. The results show that, from 1991 to 2018, the metropolis lost 26.57 km 2 (21.66%) of its green space cover. The major land use change observed is the conversion of green spaces and wetlands into built-up areas. The well-being of residents related to green space use in the metropolis is associated with individuals' age and gender; the presence of good quality green space, its accessibility, and perceived importance; frequency of visits; and the time spent in the green space. The findings suggest the need for the integration of nature into urban development planning and policy, and enforcement of development controls to protect green spaces and enhance the well-being of residents. In pursuit of better travel decisions, potential tourists are not only exposed to online destination marketing content but are also exposed to user-generated content (UGC) which are based on the subjective evaluation of people's travel experiences. These user-generated contents have been observed to significantly influence tourist travel intentions, vlogs in particular. This paper aims to further our understanding of how tourists perceive user-generated videos and their influence on their travel intentions. A survey was conducted among tourists (n = 274) in Cape Coast Castle, Ghana and analysed using a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) technique. Results suggest that tourist's perception of user-generated videos in relation to their perceived credibility and perceived fairness influenced their travel intentions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposed an analytical iterative guidance method with the desired instantaneous impact point constraint for solid rockets in "burn-coast-burn" trajectory mode. Solid rocket motors expect to remove the thrust termination mechanism to increase the structural strength and launch reliability, which induce new difficulties and challenges to the guidance problems. In terms of the "Hohmann transfer" principle, a pointing algorithm is deduced in depth to establish the theoretical relations among the ignition time, the required velocity vector, and the orbital element constraints and provides the analytical expression of the ignition time. Then, an analytic solution of the required velocity vector is derived based on orthogonal and nonorthogonal velocity vectors, and a complete guidance logic is used to solve the target orbit elements satisfying the desired instantaneous impact point. Finally, the application of the developed theoretical algorithm in this paper is conducted using a two-stage solid rocket. The proposed guidance method is verified by Monte Carlo simulations, and the testing results demonstrate the adaptability, strong robustness, and excellent performance for different desired impact point missions. Estimating chloride deposition rates is important for several applications. The conservative nature of chloride makes it a widely used natural tracer for hydrological investigations, such as groundwater recharge estimations and catchment salt balances. Additionally, chloride deposition is used to identify the sources and pathways of air pollutants as well as predict the likelihood of corrosion in infrastructures. The variability of atmospheric chloride (Cl−) deposition is a crucial consideration in hydrological investigations, particularly in coastal areas where it can fluctuate greatly. On small islands, spatial variations of chloride deposition have been found to be particularly strong, which may lead to large estimation errors when assuming point measurements are representative of larger areas. This paper aims to improve knowledge of the factors affecting chloride deposition's spatial and temporal variability in small islands using Norfolk Island (South Pacific) as a case study. A monitoring network consisting of 15 open‐site rainwater collectors was installed, from which 275 rainwater samples were collected for the period September 2020–July 2022. Total deposition rates for this period varied from 22.7 to 36.7 mg m−2 d−1 for sites located more than 400 meters from the coast. A higher variation is observed closer to the coast, with values varying from 50.9 to 1022.7 mg m−2 d−1 for sites located between 50 and 200 m from the coast. Statistical analysis shows that distance from the nearest point on the coast and elevation above sea level are significant factors contributing to spatial variability of chloride deposition, whereas period‐total rainfall depth and period‐average maximum daily wind gust speed significantly affect the temporal variability. This study contributes to knowledge on chloride deposition variability as well as the understanding of factors contributing to this variability in small islands. All results in this paper are based upon a new dataset consisting in 60 Swadesh lists of 207 items, overall 12,420 terms collected during 2018-2019. Each list corresponds to a different variety of Malagasy, which is not simply identified by the name of the ethnicity but also by the precise location where the variety was collected. This is very important since some traditional ethnic groups are a heritage of historical events rather than representing communities with similar habits and dialects. This new dataset is by far the best available, both for dimension and completeness. The varieties are classified both by standard tools, as the trees generated by UPGMA and NJ which privilege genealogy by detecting vertical transmissions, and by a new method which privileges horizontal exchanges. The new method results in a two-dimensional chart of Madagascar which realistically reproduces geography despite being generated only by comparison of words. The landing date of the ancestors of Malagasy is determined about 650 CE. This result is obtained by a straightforward approach based on the comparison of the UPGMA Malagasy family tree with the analogous tree of Romance family of languages for which all dates are well historically attested. We also propose an improved definition of Diversity computed for every locus in Madagascar and not only in places where the dialects were collected. Moreover, Diversity becomes a locally determined quantity as it is usually in biology. Diversity differences point to the South-East coast as the location where the first colonizers landed or, at least, where Malagasy variants started their dispersion. Finally, we find that the dialect spoken by the Mikea, a hunter-gatherer people in the South-West of Madagascar, is not very different from the variants of their neighbours Vezo and Masikoro. Therefore, Mikea unlikely can be linked to eventual aboriginal populations living in Madagascar prior to the main colonization event in 650 CE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. Indicators of successful malaria control interventions include a reduction in the prevalence and densities of malaria parasites contained in both symptomatic and asymptomatic infections as well as a reduction in malaria transmission. Individuals harboring malaria parasites in asymptomatic infections serve as reservoirs for malaria transmission. This study determined the prevalence of asymptomatic malaria parasite carriage in afebrile children attending six different schools in two districts, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) and the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) of the Central Region of Ghana. Methods. This cross sectional study recruited afebrile children aged between 3 and 15 years old from six randomly selected schools in the Central Region of Ghana. Finger-pricked blood was collected and used to prepare thick and thin blood smears as well as spot a strip of filter paper (Whatman #3). Nested PCR was used to identify Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium malariae, Plasmodium ovale, and Plasmodium vivax in DNA extracted from the filter paper spots. The multiplicity of P. falciparum infection was determined using merozoite surface protein 2 genotyping. Results. Out of the 528 children sampled, PCR identified 27.1% to harbor Plasmodium parasites in asymptomatic infections, whilst microscopy identified malaria parasites in 10.6% of the children. The overall PCR estimated prevalence of P. falciparum and P. malariae was 26.6% and 1.3%, respectively, with no P. ovale or P. vivax identified by PCR or microscopy. The RDT positivity rate ranged from 55.8% in Simiw to 4.5% in Kuful. Children from the Simiw Basic School accounted for 87.5% of all the asymptomatic infections. The multiplicity of P. falciparum infection was predominantly monoclonal and biclonal. Conclusions. The low prevalence of asymptomatic malaria parasite carriage by the children living in the Cape Coast Metropolis suggests that the malaria control interventions in place in CCMA are highly effective and that additional malaria control interventions are required for the KEEA district to reduce the prevalence of asymptomatic malaria parasite carriers. In this paper we evaluate new data and those from previous studies in northwest Scotland and perform a modelling study to test the hypothesis that the Storegga tsunami (submarine slope failure off the continental shelf of Central Norway dated to 8120–8175 bp) impacted this region. The model used is a 2D non‐linear, non‐conservative, Shallow Water Equation solver incorporating inundation and realistic glacial isostatic adjustment‐corrected palaeobathymetry, with horizontal resolution down to 30 m at sites of interest. The 15 coastal study sites analysed range from south of the Isle of Skye to Assynt. We predict run‐up between 2.7 and 9.4 m above contemporaneous mean tide level across the region, with the highest on the west coast of the Outer Hebrides, the east coast of Skye and at the head of long sea lochs east of Skye. We re‐evaluate evidence from previously studied open coastal marshes, isolation basins and barrier locations for the tsunami and suggest that in many locations the Storegga tsunami is the most likely cause of erosion, deposition and changes in microfossil assemblages in the early Holocene. The predictions of wave height and inundation produced by the tsunami modelling fit well with the range of available field evidence in the region. Sediments are the most important source of Late Quaternary palaeoclimate information in southern Africa, but have been little studied from a geochemical perspective. However, recent advances in analytical techniques that allow rapid and near-continuous elemental records to be obtained from sedimentary sequences has resulted in the increasing use of elemental indicators for reconstructing climate. This paper explores the diverse information that can be acquired from the inorganic component of sediments and reviews some of the progress that has been made over the last two decades in interpreting the climatic history of southern Africa using elemental records. Despite the general scarcity of elemental records, excellent examples from the region exist, which provide some of the longest and most highly resolved sequences of environmental change currently available. Records from Tswaing crater and marine deposits on the southern KwaZulu-Natal coastline have provided rare glimpses into hydroclimate variability over the last 200 000 years, suggesting that summer rainfall in the region responded predominantly to insolation forcing on glacialinterglacial timescales. Over shorter timescales, lakes and wetlands found in the Wilderness embayment on the southern Cape coast and along the Maputaland coast in north-eastern South Africa have yielded highly-resolved elemental records of Holocene environmental change, providing insight into the changing interactions between tropical (e.g., El Niño-Southern Oscillation) and temperate (e.g., mid-latitude westerlies) climate systems affecting rainfall variability in the region. The examples discussed demonstrate the multiple environmental processes that can be inferred from elemental proxies and the unique insight this can provide in advancing our understanding of past climate change on different timescales. The interpretation of geochemical data can be complicated by the complex nature of sedimentary environments, various proxy assumptions and analytical challenges, and the reliability of sediment-based climate reconstructions is substantially enhanced through multi-proxy approaches. Background: The return of chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium falciparum in sub-Saharan Africa countries offers the opportunity for the reintroduction of chloroquine (CQ) either in combination with other drugs or as a single therapy for the management of malaria. This study assesses the influence of individual study sites on the selection of CQ sensitive P. falciparum markers in the Central region of Ghana. Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from an archived filter paper blood blot from Cape Coast, Elmina, Assin Fosu, and Twifo Praso using the Chelex DNA extraction method. The age metadata of the patients from whom the blood spots were taken was collected. The prevalence of CQ-sensitive markers of pfcrt K76 and pfmdr1 N86 was performed using nested PCR and RFLP. The data were analysed using Chi-square and Odd ratio. Results: The overall prevalence of CQ-sensitive P. falciparum markers, pfcrt K76 and pfmdr1 N86 in the Central Region of Ghana were 142 out of 184 (77.17%) and 180 out of 184 (97.83%), respectively. The distribution of pfcrt K76 was assessed among the age groups per the individual study sites. 12 out of 33 (36.36%), 8 out of 33 (24.24%) and 6 out of 33 (18.18%) of pfcrt K76 CQ-sensitive marker were isolated from age 0 to 5 years, 16 to 30 years and 31 to 45 years old respectively at Cape Coast. Assin Fosu and Twifo Praso had the highest pfcrt K76 prevalence in 0–5 years, followed by 16–30 years and 6–15 years of age. The results showed that there was a significant prevalence of pfcrt K76 in all study sites; Cape Coast (χ2 = 26.48, p < 0.0001), Assin Fosu (χ2 = 37.67, p < 0.0001), Twifo Praso (χ2 = 32.25, p < 0.0001) and Elmina (χ2 = 17.88, p < 0.0001). Again, the likelihood to detect pfcrt K76 (OR (95% CI) was 7.105 (3.118–17.14), p < 0.0001 and pfmdr1 (2.028 (1.065–3.790), p < 0.001) among P. falciparum isolates from Cape Coast to be seven times and two times, respectively. Conclusion: The study showed a significant selection and expansion of chloroquine-sensitive P. falciparum markers in all the selected study areas in the Central region. Facebook is now being used by library staff to publicise their services. This is due to the fact that Facebook is now part of our daily lives especially students and teaching staff users. This paper explores the views and reaction of library staff of Cape Coast Technical University towards Facebook as a tool; and explores the way library staff use Facebook to portray the duty of library experts and their services to users. The researcher emphasises on the traditional duties of library staff and discusses possibilities for performing this role through Facebook. Current research suggest that Facebook enable library staff to publicise their collections and services to the general public as well as introduce new collections and educate users on the libraries responsibilities and support towards users. This paper examines the influence of innovation on the adoption of smartphones for accessing electronic resources in the library by postgraduate students at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. The theoretical model that underpinned this study was the diffusion of innovation theory. Based on a quantitative research approach, a survey research design was used. Questionnaire was employed in the collection of data from 278 postgraduate students. The responses were coded, captured and analysed using IBM's Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 22. The findings of the study show that postgraduate students' gender and faculty influenced their adoption of smartphones for accessing e-resources at the University of Cape Coast. However, the age of the students did not have any significant influence on the adoption of smartphones. The findings further show that only two of the perceived characteristics of innovation, complexity and compatibility, had a significant influence on the adoption of smartphones among the postgraduate students. Many candidate sites for tidal stream energy extraction can be classified as headland sites. Understanding the tidal resource of such sites is of fundamental importance to the industry. This paper examines an upper bound for the power that might be generated from an idealised headland. The dependence of this on length of turbine rows, number of turbine rows, and turbine blockage ratio is examined. Conclusions are drawn from this which are applicable to real headland sites. ICT has transformed the traditional concept of libraries from a store house of books to an intellectual information centre by facilitating global access to information. Thus, most library services are transforming from the manual system to a technologically driven system. As a result, many academic libraries have automated their house keeping functions; thereby using ICT tools to deliver web based services. This paper sought to examine the ICT capacity of library staff at the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast and the University of Energy and Natural Resources Libraries. The study used questionnaires and interviews to solicit for responses from respondents. The findings of the study revealed that, staff from these institutions are being prepared to face the ICT world since most of them were competent in the use ICT to deliver ICT related services. However, they needed more training in order to keep abreast in delivering ICT services since ICT services in libraries is still an evolving phenomenon. It was also brought to light that despite the library staff eagerness to be trained, they were however constrained by some challenges such as lack of funds, permissions to undertake trainings not granted by superiors and lack of the ICT facilities to work with. It was however recommended that, funds for training should be provided by the management of the institutions to enable staff undertake training programmes. Adequate funds must be made available by management of institutions towards the development of their library's ICT infrastructure. Also, opportunities should be given to senior staff of libraries to partake in seminars, workshops and conferences as a means to build their capacity in ICT, and finally, in-house training programmes on ICT must be frequently organised for library staff to enable them adapt to the constantly changing technological trends. In emerging nations like Ghana, unemployment has grown to be a serious worry for graduates. According to this perspective, the majority of graduates are recommended to start their own businesses rather than wait for positions from the government. This paper aims to examine the entrepreneurial intentions among University students, using variables such as Motivation, Family Background, Entrepreneurship Education and External Factors. This is a cross-sectional study where the results were based on the outcomes of a survey among the University of Cape Coast, school of Business students (n=130). Inferential statistical procedures such as the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test, Multiple Regression and Stepwise Regression Analysis were used to assess the study's specific aims and tested the four main hypotheses. The results indicated that all variables but Family Background positively influence students' entrepreneurial intentions and that Motivation is statistically significant in analyzing the factors that significantly affect the students' entrepreneurial intentions. Hence, more emphasis should be based on motivating the students both within and outside to enable them develop entrepreneurial mindsets. The study suggests that policymakers should focus on encouraging student entrepreneurship as it will be a proper management to deal with the severe unemployment issue in emerging countries, especially Ghana. Financial literacy enables owner-managers of SMEs to understand and assess their own financial needs and make rational financial decisions. The paper explores the financial literacy of owner-managers of SMEs in the Cape Coast Metropolis and how such literacy influences the performance of their businesses. The study population were owner-managers of registered SMEs in the Cape Coast Metropolis from the National Board for Small and Medium Enterprise, out of which a sample of 132 was selected through the simple random sampling technique. The data was analyzed using Structural Equation Model. The results showed a positive relationship between financial literacy and the firm's financial performance (t = 35.631, p <.00). The paper recommends that policy makers should specifically design a program and platform targeted at further enhancing the financial literacy level of these owner-managers to help improve the performance of their firms. The Sustainable Development Goals are to help alleviate poverty, combat inequality and injustice, and above all tackle climate change by 2030. Libraries in developing countries including Ghana are making major improvement towards increasing access to quality education at all levels of the educational ladder to bring the SDG 4 into reality. This paper investigated the readiness of departments and libraries within the University of Cape Coast fraternity to support the implementation of SDG 4 to ensure lifelong learning within the contextual setting of the University of Cape Coast. Available opportunities to achieve SDG 4 at University of Cape Coast were also explored. The University of Cape Coast Primary School, University Practice Junior High School, University Practice Senior High School and tertiary level were purposely used for the study. Interviews and observations were used for data collection. The interview responses were reported from the study. The study found out that frantic efforts are being made to ensure learning from the cradle to the grave and thus achieve SDG 4 in all its educational level. UCC educational institutions understand SDG 4 but there is still a room for improvement in terms of collaboration, acquiring relevant resource materials and enough funding to carry out inclusive education at the University of Cape Coast. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the proximity of study centres to the students of College of Distance Education, University of Cape Coast (CoDE/UCC) and whether further studies of distance learners who were teachers and employees could lead to absenteeism in their workplaces. Design/methodology/approach: A sequential explanatory strategy was used. A self-administered questionnaire and unstructured interviews as well as observation guides were employed to collect data from 2,077 students pursuing business and education programmes of CoDE in all study centres across Ghana. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics and pattern matching of content analysis. Findings: The study found that few teachers and other workers pursuing the distance education do absent themselves from the workplace or classroom on Fridays preceding their face-to-face session because they embarked on their journey to the study centres on Friday morning. Some teachers also absented themselves from work on Mondays after face-to-face sessions for a lack of means of transport on Sunday after lessons. The absenteeism of these respondents directly and indirectly affected their employers, students and customers. Practical implications: It was therefore recommended that management of CoDE/UCC should open more study centres in all the regions especially Western, Ashanti, Upper East, Northern and Upper West Regions to reduce number of hours spent by students to their study centres and consider introducing the business programmes at the existing district centres to reduce average distance covered by these students to commute from their places of work to their respective centres in the regional capitals. It was also recommended that online/electronic learning and audio versions (impersonal communication) of the study modules should be introduced so that students would not necessary have to travel to the study centre to participate in lectures/face-to-face sessions. Originality/value: The findings of this study will help managers and administrators of both public and private distance educational providers. In addition to providing basis and areas for establishing study centres for geographical proximity, findings of the study should prove helpful for designing and delivering electronic and audio versions of distance education modules to reduce the level of absenteeism in workplace for the students. The aim of this study is to investigate coping strategies, health anxiety and stress among healthcare professionals in selected hospitals in the Cape Coast Metropolis during the Covid 19 pandemic. This study adopted the Descriptive survey design. The Multistage sampling technique was used to select 322 health professionals. The health professionals included Medical Officers, Physician Assistants and Nurses. Data were gathered using the Health Anxiety Inventory (HAI-SF), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Brief-COPE Inventory. Analyses were conducted using mean and standard deviation, ANOVA as well as Independent Samples t-test. Results indicate that Health professionals adopted diverse coping strategies ranging from positive to negative coping style to overcome the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results also indicate that coping strategies significantly influenced health anxiety levels of health professionals, and that Active Coping is a significant determinant of stress among health professionals. Male health professionals had significantly more health anxiety than females. However, gender was not a significant factor in the experiences of stress. Infertility is a complex and often sensitive issue with far-reaching psycho-social ramifications for couples and their families. This study therefore seeks to delve into the psycho-social burden of infertility in Cape Coast, a major city in Ghana. Specifically, we explored the impact of infertility on the psychological and social health of infertile couples receiving fertility treatment. It also delves into the strategies they adopt to cope with their conditions. The study employs a qualitative approach to inquiry using phenomenology as a study design to explore the experiences of the study participants. In-depth interviews were conducted using interview guides, voice recorded and transcribed verbatim. Both inductive and deductive/framework coding techniques were used to code the data leading to the generation of themes and sub-themes. The results show that most of the study participants dealing with infertility faced psychological burdens from different sources including their families, society and themselves. These burdens take a toll on their mental health, pushing them into a state of desperation and depression. It was, however, revealed that infertile couples are able to cope with the help of their family, spouses and the church. Curiously, some of them opt for withdrawal from social events as a coping mechanism. Infertility exerts an enormous negative psycho-social impact on affected couples, especially women. The family and society serve as the main sources of stressors for infertile couples. Therefore, programmes that are aimed at fertility treatment should deliberately consider addressing the psychosocial burden of infertility through education targeting actors, especially interpersonal-level actors. An unidentified colonial ascidian called gaikotsu-panda-hoya in Japanese, literally meaning 'skeleton panda ascidian,' has been attracting SCUBA divers' attention for the past few years since its strange appearance was introduced on the Internet by a diving shop in Kumejima Island, Japan. To confirm the taxonomic status of this species, fresh samples were collected from a diving point off the coast of Kumejima Island. Our morphological examination revealed that they represent a new species, herein described as Clavelina ossipandae sp. nov., which can be distinguished from 44 congeners in the genus Clavelina Savigny, 1816 by the combination of the following seven characteristics: i) colony consisting of completely free zooids, ii) zooids up to 20 mm in length, iii) in the living state, zooids transparent, with laterally elongated white patch between oral and atrial siphons, as well as four black markings, one between siphons, one mid-dorsally, and the other two situated laterally in a pair on the anterior part of the body, iv) transverse vessels white, v) endostyle black, vi) 10-14 stigmatal rows, and vii) two longitudinal muscular bands running from the abdomen to the endostyle on each side. Partial sequences (810 bp) of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene from the holotype and one of the paratypes differed at 10 sites from each other (1.26% K2P distance) but were the same when translated into amino acids. Objective: The main objective of the study was to assess psychological distress and to identify any gender specific differences in the psychological distress among infertile couples after one year of unsuccessful pharmacotherapy. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Setting: The study was conducted in four fertility clinics in the Cape Coast Metropolis. Participants: One hundred and twenty respondents (71 women and 49 men) were recruited by simple random sampling. Statistical analysis: Statistical analysis was done using SPSS (v. 25). Psychological distress scores were presented as Mean±SD and were analysed using One-way ANOVA, followed by Bonferroni's post hoc test. Associations between exposures and outcomes were measured using relative risk. Outcome measure: The main outcome measure was the level of depression, anxiety, and stress among infertile couples after unsuccessful pharmacotherapy. Results: Anxiety was the predominant psychological distress experienced by respondents (60.8%), followed by depression (43.3%) and stress (37.5%). Generally, psychological distress scores increased with age among female respondents but decreased with age for male respondents. The duration of infertility only significantly affected anxiety (p=0.01) but not depression (p=0.51) and stress (p=0.06) levels. Approximately 31.7% of respondents reported experiencing extremely severe anxiety. Male respondents reported higher degree of depressive symptoms than females (46.9 vs. 40.8%). Conclusion: Unsuccessful pharmacotherapy of infertility is associated with varied degrees of psychological distress among Ghanaian infertile couples, which can be affected by age, duration of infertility and gender. The ancient Greek colony of Selinunte, with its acropolis on a promontory on the south-western coast of Sicily, is flanked by two valleys where two modest rivers flow today: the Modione to the west and the Cottone to the east. Archaeological reconstructions, historical documents from various sources, and recent remote sensing surveys indicate two important bays corresponding to the ancient mouths of these two rivers, now completely covered by a thick layer of sediments. It is believed that the ports of the colony were located in these bays, although the remains of these ports are still sparse and contradictory. Here we present a multibeam bathymetric map of part of the marine area immediately off Selinunte and a series of high-resolution seismic profiles acquired parallel to the coastline. They show the geometries and stratigraphic context of the two buried river valleys offshore, from which information about the palaeoenvironmental setting and evolution of the landscape can be derived and which may be used in adequately guiding future archaeological excavation programs. The Cape south coast of South Africa contains extensive outcrops of Pleistocene aeolianite and cemented foreshore deposits. More than 250 vertebrate tracksites have been identified in these deposits, including 35 elephant tracksites. In places, where large palaeosurfaces are occasionally exposed, numerous potholes are evident on the remains of what is most likely a palaeo-coastline. Features suggestive of elephant tracks are apparent on such surfaces and in overlying layers. In order to develop, potholes require a disturbance or depression in the surface to act as a "pothole-precursor" on which erosive forces can act. While elephant tracks or similar biogenic origins for potholes have not previously been described, such an explanation appears plausible for at least some pothole features in areas known to have harboured elephants or other large vertebrate trackmakers when these surfaces were composed of unconsolidated sand. Four sites on the Cape south coast are examined and described. Evidence for use of beaches as travel corridors for elephants is described, and candidate Pleistocene trackmaker species are considered. The age of these palaeo-surfaces is considered to range from Marine Isotope Stage 11 to Marine Isotope Stage 5. It is concluded that depressions formed by elephant tracks should be considered as a precursor for the formation of potholes on suitable Pleistocene surfaces in littoral zones. This paper presents continuous, high resolution fossil pollen and microcharcoal records from Bo Langvlei, a lake in the Wilderness Embayment on South Africa's southern Cape coast. Spanning the past ~1300 years and encompassing the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA; c. AD 950–1250) and the Little Ice Age (LIA; c. AD 1300–1850), these records provide a rare southern African perspective on past temperature, moisture and vegetation change during these much debated periods of the recent geological past. Considered together with other records from the Wilderness Embayment, we conclude that conditions in the region during the MCA chronozone were – in the context of the last 1300 years – likely relatively dry (reduced levels of Afrotemperate forest pollen) and perhaps slightly cooler (increased percentages of Stoebe -type pollen) than present. The most significant phase of forest expansion, and more humid conditions, occurred during the transition between the MCA and the most prominent cooling phase of the LIA. The LIA is clearly identified at this locality as a period of cool, dry conditions between c. AD 1600 and 1850. The mechanisms driving the changes observed in the Bo Langvlei pollen record appear to be generally linked to changes in temperature, and changes in the influence of tropical circulation systems. During warmer periods, moisture availability was higher at Bo Langvlei, and rainfall was perhaps less seasonal. During colder periods, precipitation resulting from tropical disturbances was more restricted, resulting in drier conditions. While increased precipitation has been reported during the LIA from Verlorenvlei in the Western Cape as a result of an equatorward displacement of the westerly storm-track at this time, the opposing response at Bo Langvlei suggests that any increased influence of westerlies was insufficient to compensate for the concurrent reduction in tropical/local rainfall in the region. State of the art approaches to Multi-robot localization and mapping still present multiple issues to be improved, offering a wide range of possibilities for researchers and technology. This paper presents a new algorithm for visual Multi-robot simultaneous localization and mapping, used to join, in a common reference system, several trajectories of different robots that participate simultaneously in a common mission. One of the main problems in centralized configurations, where the leader can receive multiple data from the rest of robots, is the limited communications bandwidth that delays the data transmission and can be overloaded quickly, restricting the reactive actions. This paper presents a new approach to Multi-robot visual graph Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) that aims to perform a joined topological map, which evolves in different directions according to the different trajectories of the different robots. The main contributions of this new strategy are centered on: (a) reducing to hashes of small dimensions the visual data to be exchanged among all agents, diminishing, in consequence, the data delivery time, (b) running two different phases of SLAM, intra- and inter-session, with their respective loop-closing tasks, with a trajectory joining action in between, with high flexibility in their combination, (c) simplifying the complete SLAM process, in concept and implementation, and addressing it to correct the trajectory of several robots, initially and continuously estimated by means of a visual odometer, and (d) executing the process online, in order to assure a successful accomplishment of the mission, with the planned trajectories and at the planned points. Primary results included in this paper show a promising performance of the algorithm in visual datasets obtained in different points on the coast of the Balearic Islands, either by divers or by an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) equipped with cameras. During the Neolithic period, near the North-Eastern coast of the Gargano promontory (Apulia Region, Italy), an important network of mines represented the most ancient European example of systematic exploitation of primary chert sources. These high-quality raw materials were traded between prehistoric communities living on both sides of the Adriatic Sea. However, the Gargano promontory is not the only area of the Apulia Region with chert sources. Secondary sources of the Tavoliere plain deposits and primary sources of the Southern Apennines must be considered in addition to the Gargano chert-bearing limestones. This paper provides an overview of chert sources distribution in the Gargano and Tavoliere plain through a chert sources map based on up-to-date geological and archaeological information. The map represents the first lithic procurement mapping in the Region and it is a very useful tool for planning sampling activities and detect the potential chert sources exploited in Neolithic times. The map was used for sampling pebbles near the coast and inland of the investigated area. A non-destructive multi-parametric protocol for chert investigations (NM-PCI) method was applied to all the collected secondary samples. The results were compared at first with those of the Gargano mines. The output of the partition around medoids (PAM) procedure shows, as a general trend, that primary sources are well grouped, while secondary sources show less clear compositional fingerprints. The paper presents the morphodynamic investigation of embayed beaches through the impact of structural headlands. An XBeach model was successfully applied to predict the surf zone current pattern and to predict morphological features of three different embayment scales for low-moderate-high wave energy events. The formation of central rip currents in embayed beaches is linked to the presence of a sand bar, while topographical headland rips developed adjacent to the headland boundary are caused by the geological control of the headland structure itself. The effect of moderate and high waves has resulted to a decreased number of central rips in a longer embayment thus limiting the beach circulation to the cellular type. This type of rips could provide an initial insight into the offshore transport of sand from the coast. Whether wave breaking occurs outside or inside the embayment determines the initiation of large scale rip currents, megarips. Several factors that lead to the generation of megarip currents in literature should be taken into account as a guideline for morphodynamic studies in a high energy embayed coast. Nevertheless, the characteristics of surf zone current circulation in all cases presented in this study complies with the description of the theoretical embayment scaling parameter (δ') (Short and Masselink, 1999 and Castelle and Coco, 2012). Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive study of wave refraction, wave and wind driven sediment transport, foredune development and Holocene barrier evolution over a variety of time scales at Moçambique Beach, Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil. The motivation for this study was to examine the relationships between estimated wave driven sediment transport, medium and long term aeolian transport, foredune development, and Holocene barrier volumes and morphology. An analysis of 2years of wave rider data for the region shows two well defined peaks of frequencies: one of swell waves from the south with a period of 12s, and another peak of sea waves from east-northeast with a period of 7s. Longshore sediment transport rates were calculated using high resolution hindcast wave data for the South Atlantic Ocean, which was calibrated by the measured buoy data. The dominant southerly waves drive a longshore gradient in wave energy from south to north, and nearshore/surf zone sediment transport increases from south to north. Beach grain size is fine in both the south and north, and medium in the center. The combination of grain size and wave energy variations creates a marked alongshore variation in surf zone beach types ranging from low energy dissipative in the south, moderate energy intermediate in the central area to moderate to high energy dissipative in the north. Estimates of aeolian sediment transport, volumetric changes in foredune deposition and total Holocene dunefield volumes were also calculated. Results indicate that the morphological behavior of the foredune profiles reflects the gradients of longshore sediment transport and the exposure to wind energy and aeolian sediment delivery, with a maximum of sediment volume and transport towards, and in the central part and northern end of the barrier. Holocene (0–7000years) barrier volumes vary along the embayment, mimicking the trends in both calculated wave and wind driven sediment transport. The Short and Hesp (1982) model was more suitable in predicting the long term (Holocene) barrier evolution than the size and volume of the foredune. The combination of wide beach, high energy dissipation, maximum sediment supply, and high exposure to strong onshore winds is found in the northern end of the embayment where Holocene subaerial barrier volumes are at a maximum. Overall, this study proves that foredune development is closely related to wind exposure, wave energy and gradients of longshore sediment transport, and that dunefield development reflects the increase downdrift in potential sediment supply from the southern to the northern end of the beach, and the change alongshore from low energy dissipative, through intermediate, to high energy dissipative beach-surf zone environments. This paper significantly extends previous models of beach and dune interactions in that it (i) actually determines wave driven sediment transport for various sections of a long embayment, (ii) relates those transport patterns to surf zone/beach morphodynamic types and variations in alongshore sediment patterns, and (iii) correlates foredune volumes and Holocene barrier volumes (which reflect proxy Holocene onshore transport rates) with wave driven sediment transport rates. In 1859 the Dutch historian, L.C.D. van Dijk published a book on the voyages of discovery made by Jan Carstenszoon in 1623 and Jean Etienne Gonzal in 1756 to the Gulf of Carpentaria. The book contains a commentary of the two voyages as well as a copy of Carstenszoon's journal. It also contains a curious map that not only renames the Gulf of Carpentaria and the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, but also questions the naming of Arnhem Land and some of its named locations. Abstract The Caminada Headlands is a beach and dune system near Port Fourchon in coastal Louisiana that provides natural protection for back barrier marshes against storm surges and wave overtopping. Due to significant shoreline erosion and regional subsidence, a beach and dune restoration project was initiated in 2012 to replenish the shoreline front. Because of the underlying soft deltaic sediments, this restoration effort was expected to cause significant increase in the applied vertical stress and thus sediment settlement. To quantify the degree of settlement occurring within the compressive sediment layers and the fill, extensive geotechnical investigations were conducted for design and installation of settlement plates and subsurface settlement anchors to monitor the field performance. This paper presents the geological and geotechnical investigations, measured material properties, and corresponding empirical correlations developed from fifty-one (51) laboratory consolidation tests. The pre- and post-survey elevations of the site are also used to determine the change in vertical stress with depth at the instrumented sites. Abstract: This paper presents MEPBAY and SMC software tools that allow comprehending and solving problems in headland-bay beach through a parabolic model. These tools can be employed as coastal engineering design tools (including nourishment designs) and also for academic purposes. They are oriented to different end-users, including coastal technicians, scientists and undergraduates and as coastal engineering design tools, they can be applied to different operational levels (pre-design and design). The aim of the paper is to present design guidelines, the capabilities of the tools, their potential use and applications. Abstract: Headland-bay beach (HBB) is one of the most prominent physiographic features on the oceanic margin of many countries in the world. Under the influence of a predominant swell, its curved periphery in natural environment may reach static equilibrium and remains stable without sediment supply from updrift and/or a riverain source within its own embayment. Coastal scientists and engineers have attempted to develop mathematical expressions to quantify this ideal bay shape since the 1940s. As the scenario with depleting sediment supply has become a common reality on many parts of the world coastline in more recent time, some coastal engineers have advocated a rational approach to mimicking the static bay shape found in nature in order to mitigate beach erosion as well as for coastal management. Nowadays, many useful applications have emerged since the publication of the parabolic bay shape equation (PBSE) developed for static equilibrium planform (SEP) in late 1980s. The advance in modern computer technologies and international collaboration has further facilitated the exchange of knowledge and applications of this static bay beach concept (SBBC). This paper reviews the progress on the research in HBB made by geographers and geologists since the 1940s, together with the involvement of coastal engineers working on shore protection and management from the 1960s. Aided by software MEPBAY developed in 2003 for the PBSE, several practical examples are demonstrated in this paper for the stability verification of natural and man-made bay beaches, shore protection, mitigating downdrift erosion of a harbour, design of recreational bay beach, as well as for environmental impact assessment.
