In the knowledge economy era, innovation has become a key emphasis for urban competitions. This paper constructs a theoretical research framework that integrates the basic understandings, influencing factors and ensuing results of intercity innovative competition relations. On the basis of data from the general programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China from 2005 to 2019, this paper constructs intercity innovative competition relations in China, analyses their spatial distribution and quantitative characteristics, and quantitatively investigates the impact of urban innovation capacity and multidimensional proximity (e.g., geographical proximity, institutional proximity and cognitive proximity) on intercity innovative competition relations through a negative binomial model. The study obtained the following findings: (1) In terms of the overall intercity innovative competition relations, the intensity of China's intercity innovative competition relations gradually increased from 2005 to 2019, with a spatial clustering towards cities with high administrative ranks (e.g., municipalities directly under the central government, sub-provincial cities and provincial capitals); Beijing is always at the centre of innovative competition relations, but its standing has slightly slipped in recent years. (2) From the perspective of disciplines, cities can become benchmarks in particular fields of innovative competitions by competing according to their disciplinary strengths; intercity innovative competition relations in China vary across various academic disciplines. (3) In terms of influencing factors, urban innovation capacity has significant positive effects on intercity innovative competition relations; geographical proximity, institutional proximity and cognitive proximity all have significant positive effects on innovative competition relations; and interactions occur between multidimensional proximities, including a complementary effect between geographical proximity and institutional proximity, a substitutive effect between cognitive proximity and geographical proximity, and a substitutive effect between cognitive proximity and institutional proximity. The smart city concept has taken center stage as a paradigm shift in urban governance, promising innovation, sustainability, and strategic upgrades, and drawing the attention of researchers globally. However, existing frameworks for assessing smart cities remain incomplete and simplistic. This paper aims to address the following question: what is the process and current situation of 30 capitals in China after the implementation of smart city construction, especially from the new perspective of social, physical, and informational space development? To this end, we focus on 30 national and provincial capitals in China, proposing a novel, tri-dimensional SPI model—Social, Physical, and Information space—for smart city spatial development assessment. Employing a robust methodological approach, including entropy weighting, coupled coordination degree models, and the Dagum Gini coefficient, we conduct a spatial development and coordination analysis of these cities from 2011 to 2021. In addition, we utilize BP neural networks to evaluate the contribution of each indicator to the spatial coupled coordination. Our findings indicate a steady increase in the spatial coupled coordination development level of smart capitals in China, alongside a narrowing disparity in development speeds across regions, resulting in a staggered spatial distribution pattern. Specifically, the Information space subsystem represents the most influential driver of coupled coordination. The significance of this research lies in its unique tri-dimensional spatial perspective, offering valuable insights into the spatial development and coordination discrepancies in the smart city concept. Air pollution and urban innovation are two important issues that have accompanied China's economic growth in the past decade. Based on the quasi-natural experiment of central heating in northern China in winter, this paper uses regression discontinuity design (RDD) to isolate the causal relationship between air pollution and urban innovation in China by matching urban data with multiple micro databases. Further, the possible influencing mechanism is discussed from the perspective of human capital. The results show that—air pollution significantly inhibits urban innovation—specifically, a 1% increase in air pollution significantly reduces urban innovation by 1.463%; compared with non-invention patents, air pollution has a more obvious inhibitory effect on invention patents with higher innovation capacity requirements and technology content. In terms of the impact mechanism, air pollution may undermine urban innovation by impairing healthy human capital and increasing the emigration of high-level human capital from cities. The relationship between environmental regulation and innovation has long been a key issue of scholarly interest. The Porter hypothesis posits that environmental regulations can effectively promote innovation. However, with the rapid development of the Internet, the relationship between environmental regulation and innovation has changed. Through a theoretical analysis, this paper finds that the development of the Internet can not only directly promote innovation but also inhibit innovation through environmental regulations. This paper uses Chinese city-level data from 2014 to 2016 to empirically test the relationship among the Internet, environmental regulation, and innovation. The study finds that (1) the increase in the Internet level and in the intensity of environmental regulations promotes innovation, and the results remain stable after the replacement of the Internet level metrics, (2) the increase in the Internet level inhibits the positive effect of environmental regulations on innovation, but its inhibitory effect is lower than the promotion effect of the Internet on innovation, and (3) the Internet and environmental regulations have a significant promotion effect on the application and acquisition of three types of patents, including invention patents, utility model patents and design patents, with the application and acquisition of utility model patents having the greatest promotion effect, and (4) the analysis of heterogeneity shows that environmental regulation has a greater effect on innovation in eastern and provincial capital cities, and the Internet has a greater effect on innovation in western and nonprovincial capital cities. Finally, this article puts forward policy recommendations based on three aspects: strengthening Internet construction, implementing environmental regulations and policies based on local conditions, and increasing support for R&D and innovation. After years of governance, China's PM2.5 pollution has improved significantly, but some problems remain. PM2.5 is the carrier of many heavy metals, and it has a stronger capacity to carry heavy metals, causing more significant harm to public health. At present, most of the studies on PM2.5-bound heavy metals in China are based on individual cities, and there are few studies from China's provincial capital cities. Given the above reasons, this paper described the pollution characteristics of PM2.5-bound heavy metal (Hg, Pb, Cd, As, Cr(VI), Ni) in 29 provincial capital cities in China (except Hohhot and Lhasa). Furthermore, the human health risk assessment recommended by US EPA was used to evaluate the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of the male adults, the female adults, and the children. The results indicated that (1) the children were facing a higher risk value of PM2.5-bound heavy metals than the adults; (2) Cr, As, and Pb were the top three elements that contributed to the average non-carcinogenic risk, while Cr(VI), As, and Cd were the three elements with the highest carcinogenic risk; and (3) the concentrations of PM2.5-bound heavy metals in the provincial capital cities of northern China were worse than those in the South. In response to the above conclusions, this paper put forward: (1) the government should strengthen the management of metallurgical industry and coal-burning industrial enterprises; (2) establish a real-time monitoring system for toxic and harmful heavy metal pollutants carried in the atmosphere as soon as possible; (3) concern on the regional synergies to form pollution control metropolitan areas. The sustainable development of the sports industry has garnered extensive attention worldwide. In this study, after a rigorous explanation of the connotation of the sports industry development resilience coefficient (SIDRC), the Topsis model and exploratory spatial data analysis were comprehensively employed to evaluate and visualize the SIDRC of 285 cities in China. Additionally, a spatial econometric model was constructed to explore the influencing factors of SIDRC. The major conclusions drawn from this study are as follow: (1) While the SIDRC has improved significantly over the study period, it still remains overall at a low level of resilience with a widening gap between cities. (2) A strong spatial imbalance exists in the distribution of SIDRC, with coastal regions demonstrating greater resilience compared to the central and western regions, and provincial capital cities faring better than other cities. (3) Policy support index, economic development level, structural diversity of the sports industry, and social participation play crucial roles in promoting SIDRC. Finally, social participation has a positive impact on SIDRC in neighboring cities by facilitating resource sharing, market expansion, and extending the industrial chain. The paper concludes by offering recommendations such as increasing the construction of sports markets and public participation, which can optimize the layout of the sports industry and enhance industrial development resilience. The relationship between environmental regulation and firms' total factor productivity (TFP) has always been a hot topic in environmental economics, but the conclusions are still mixed. Employing a sample of 14,375 firm-year observations in China from 2010 to 2018, our research explores whether and when environmental regulation could trigger firms, to enhance TFP. The available evidence leads us to cautiously conclude that: (1) Environmental regulation notably improves firms' TFP, the conclusion still holds after alleviating the endogenous problems and a battery of robustness tests. (2) Firms' bargaining power significantly weakens the effect of environmental regulation on firms' TFP. (3) Compared with non-state-owned firms and non-heavy-polluting industries, environmental regulation has a greater impact on state-owned firms and heavy-polluting industries; higher executive compensation does not motivate firms to improve TFP. Compared with firms headquartered in non-provincial capital cities, environmental regulation has a greater impact on firms' TFP in provincial capital cities. Overall, the findings of our research are extremely relevant for the governments, investors, and firms' managers; this paper provides China's micro-firm-level evidence for the Porter hypothesis. Based on the cross-sectional data of 40 large-scale international airports in China in 2019, this paper introduced natural and social factors into the calculation of airport operating efficiency and constructed a BCC-SFA-BCC-Tobit 4-stage analysis framework. Combining with the connotation of the "green, smart, humane, and safe" airport high-quality development, the paper applied the Tobit model to quantitatively analyze the influencing factors of the operating efficiency of airports, and the research shows that (1) the overall operating efficiency of the study airports is 0.734; in terms of the region, the operating efficiency of airports located in southwest and northwest regions is greatly affected by natural factors, while the operating efficiency of airports located in North China is mostly affected by social factors. (2) Under the perspective of human-earth relationship, the impact of natural factors on the operating efficiency of airports is greater than that of social factors, wherein PM2.5 and relative humidity have negative impact, while the actual foreign capital utilization of the city and domestic and foreign tourists have positive impact. (3) The regression results of the Tobit model indicate that green, smart, and safe indicators can promote the high-quality development of airports, while the humane indicator restrains the high-quality development of airports. This paper discusses how geographic features affect the level of social trust in a region. Using individual-level survey data from China with more than 40,000 observations, the authors find that social trust is higher in cities that are located at the border of provinces. The ruggedness of the traffic route between the city and the capital city of the province is added to the empirical model as an instrumental variable for further analysis. This solves the measurement error and the omitted variables problems in the baseline empirical model. Results of the two-stage least least-squares estimation show that the level of average social trust is still higher in the border cities. The mechanism explaining the empirical results is that the population in China has tended to migrate from the border cities to nonborder cities. This leads to residents in the nonborder cities having multiple cultures, which increases the probability of misperception in the coordination of daily life. Consequently, misperception among groups with different cultures lowers the level of social trust in the nonborder city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies climate change impacts on total factor productivity (TFP) in China using economic and climatic data for provincial capital cities and municipalities from 1998 to 2017. We employ a novel nonparametric quantile method to decompose historical temperature data into multiple temperature quantiles, which are then used in our regression analysis to avoid estimation bias caused by seasonal heterogeneity of temperatures across China. Specifically, we create three temperature quantiles for each city to represent their extremely high temperatures in summer, extremely low temperatures in winter, and mild temperatures in spring and fall. In general, we find that a warming climate has a significant negative impact on TFP in the long-run, while in the short term, only increases in extreme temperatures exert significant negative effects on TFP growth. However, the temperature effects on TFP vary substantially across coastal capital cities, inland capital cities, and municipalities due to their differences in geography, development levels, and political positions. Recent literature has been debating the performance of high-technology zones (HTZs) in developing countries. This paper contributes to this debate by examining how national HTZs in China affect allocative efficiency of resources among Chinese cities as well as China's total factor productivity (TFP) growth. This paper finds that resource misallocation among cities reduces China's TFP growth by 4.5% of which capital misallocation accounts for 2.4% and labour misallocation accounts for 2.1%. Moreover, we find that the establishment of national HTZs in China increases aggregate TFP by improving the allocative efficiency of capital among cities: that is, redistributing more capital from lower to higher productivity cities. In contrast, we find little evidence of TFP gain driven by technical efficiency following the establishment of HTZs. This paper thus reveals a potential positive effect of establishing HTZs in developing countries: although establishing HTZs may not improve the technical efficiency of these countries, it may nevertheless mitigate these countries' resource misallocation and enhance their aggregate TFP. Recycling the condensate water of the air conditioner could be explored as an alternative water source to contribute to building the green campus. This paper explored the condensate water production through actual measurement based on a split air handling unit (SAHU) in a university building. Then, the statistical analysis was used to analyze the recycling feasibility and the impact factors of the condensate water production in 31 Chinese provincial capital cities to obtain the recycling potential map of the condensate water generated from a SAHU. Results showed that: (1) In the measurement, the amount of condensate water produced by a single split air conditioner was 1.6 kg from 12:40 to 13:40. Therefore, the daily output of condensate water of the air conditioner with the university operation schedule could reach 52.99 kg during the main air-conditioning season. (2) Among the 31 provincial capital cities in China, the largest condensate water outputs could be found in the Hot Summer and Warm Winter zone and the Hot Summer and Cold Winter zone, with an average monthly output of 1600 kg and 1100 kg, respectively. (3) Regression analysis showed that the dry-bulb temperature and dew point temperature of outdoor air had the highest positive and significant influence on condensate water production. The objective of this study is to provide theoretical guidance for the design and energy conservation evaluation of the feasibility of SAHU condensate water recycling in universities. Growing populations and rapid urbanization have put tremendous pressure on the food supply. The rural hinterland around cities is an important source of the urban food supply chain. Facing the constraints of China's land stock, reasonable use of land space and optimization of agricultural crop structure is crucial to meet the food demand. Von Thünen Model, which is fronted by a 19th-century German economist, outlines a rural landscape of commercial farmers growing agricultural products for local markets while proposing basic patterns and principles of land use in agriculture. Using data from China's OVOP ("One village, One product"), this paper analyzes the agricultural location and crop choices around two levels of cities (provincial capital cities, and county-level cities) by using Thünen's theory. The results showed that crop density did decrease as the distance to urban increased. Crop rings are present in the vicinity of both metropolitan and county-level cities, distributed according to crop intensity. Evidence from China suggests that agricultural location and crop selection still follow the basic principles of the Thünen model. Planners and policymakers should refocus on the Von Thünen model to utilize land space and optimize agricultural production scientifically and efficiently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmental protection and innovation performance are key issues that affect the sustainable development and value growth of cities. Using data of 272 prefecture-level cities during 2002–2016 and 2,169 listed companies, and the air ventilation coefficient and government environmental regulations, as the instrumental variables for PM2.5 concentrations, this paper applies two-stage OLS (2SLS) to investigate how air pollution affects China's technological innovation and its realization mechanism. The results indicate that the rise in air pollution significantly inhibits the technological innovation level of regions as a whole as well as individual enterprises. When considering the spatial effect of the spread of PM2.5 concentrations, due to positive spillover effects on innovation activities, the spread of air pollution has negative impacts on technological innovation activities in surrounding cities. Human capital and labour costs are important channels through which air pollution influences China's technological innovation. The implementation of pilot carbon trading policies can effectively reduce air pollution and then contribute to the achievement of the goals of the green growth strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The primary prerequisite for sustainable urban development is to accurately grasp the development of the city. The dynamic changes in the urban area can reflect the urban expansion process and spatial development model. Carrying out urban expansion monitoring and extracting urban areas is of great importance for grasping the law of urban development and promoting the sustainable development of cities. However, the related research reveals several problems such as insufficient accuracy and low intelligence of urban boundary extraction. In response to these problems, this paper proposes a new method for urban area extraction based on the progressive learning model. By combining prior knowledge and image features, the number of training samples required for machine learning is reduced, and the problem of using high-level semantic information expression in the process of urban areas is avoided by using the classification method, and thus the accuracy of urban area extraction is improved. The method uses urban road network data to divide the city into blocks. It applies the scene classification method to extract the urban areas and uses the pyramid layer-by-layer to carry out the space constraint method to integrate the urban extraction principle into the machine learning process, which can be obtained and kept artificial under a small sample condition. Extracting the effect of the urban area is very close, greatly reducing the workload and providing a new solution for high-precision automatic extraction of urban areas. Through the analysis of urban expansion, the following results were obtained: (1) from 2000 to 2015, China's provincial capital cities maintained a high-speed growth trend with a total area increased by 90%; (2) urban expansion showed significant regional differences. The eastern expansion rate gradually slowed down, the western and northeast regions accelerated their expansion, and the central region expanded steadily; (3) 61% of the provincial capital cities expanded exponentially; (4) the development of China's provincial capital cities was highly correlated with national urban development policies and regional development strategies. Against the background of the international dialogue and action agendas regarding climate change and the protection of biodiversity, China has embarked during the past years on a new urbanisation approach, gradually advancing from an era of high-speed sprawl to one of more high-quality, green and low-carbon city development. Several national policies and strategies have been put in place, which are consequently rolled out at the sub-national level in provinces and cities. Energy efficiency in urban areas, nature-based solutions and new green ecological site developments are particularly important planning priorities fuelling the national government's ambition to transform cities to be more liveable and sustainable. Further priorities are digitalisation and smart city approaches, as well as responding to COVID-19 implications in the sense of 'green recovery'. In the context of high-quality economic development and coordinated regional development, this paper measures the urban land use efficiency of 275 prefecture-level cities in China from 2003 to 2016, taking into account the unexpected output (environmental pollution), and explores the temporal and spatial evolution of urban land use efficiency through kernel density estimation and spatial autocorrelation analysis. The results show that: (1) From 2003 to 2016, China's urban land use efficiency showed an overall fluctuating growth, but it remained at a low level. The mean value of urban land use efficiency has been gradually decreasing in east, west and central regions. (2) In the whole country and the eastern, central and western regions, the regional differences have been increasing, and the efficiency values of the whole country and the east have become polarized. (3) Urban land use efficiency shows a weak spatial positive correlation, but the degree of spatial agglomeration is increasing. High-high agglomeration areas are mostly distributed in the southeastern coastal areas, and extend into the central region, while most of the high-low polarized areas are the capital cities of the central and western regions. The low-high depressed areas are scattered around the high-value accumulation areas, some of which have turned into high-high agglomeration areas during the study period, while the low-low homogeneous areas are mainly distributed in the central, western and northeastern regions. Therefore, it is proposed that strengthening the utilization of urban stock land, strengthening the regional cooperation mechanism, and formulating policies which improve the efficiency of land use are effective ways to promote the intensive and economical use of urban land, as well as regional coordinated development. The study of the relationship between economic development and land urbanization is significant not only for China but also for other developing countries. This paper investigates the causal relationship between land urbanization quality and economic growth in China on a regional level in order to explore such relationship. Panel data from 2003 to 2012 of 35 major cities were employed in the analysis. According to the Seventh Five-Year Plan, we divided these cities into three groups, namely, Eastern China, Central China and Western China, based on their geographic position and economic development. By using the VECM methodology, panel fully modified ordinary least square and the Granger method; we intend to highlight the type of causality between land urbanization quality and economic growth. The empirical results show that (1) long-run causality from land urbanization quality to economic growth exists on a national scale, with the largest effects observed in the Western region, followed by the Central region, and the Eastern region, which is ranked last; (2) economic growth positively affects land urbanization quality, although this effect diminishes over time in all three regions; and (3) mutual short-run causality is found in all regions, in addition to Central China. This study placed more emphasis on the quality and efficiency of land use in urban areas. Furthermore, we propose that the transformation of the local government's performance evaluation mechanism, inter-regional coordination, and cross-regional operation can contribute to land urbanization quality and that, more importantly, Central China is the region that requires the greatest policy support from the government. Ancient Chinese cities were closely connected to extramural areas. Therefore, research on the construction of urban space in ancient China should not be restricted to the area within the city wall; rather it should extend to the surrounding areas. There has been plenty of research on the urban planning and design of Chang'an in Tang Dynasty (618–907), which is the capital of the most prosperous dynasty of ancient China. However, little research has paid attention to its spatial order at the regional scale. This article aims to solve this problem using the 'triple-evidence' method, i.e. based on the evidences from archaeology, literature and field survey. More specifically, it explores the main problems involved in regional spatial construction, reveals the general strategies for construction of the regional spatial order, and further analyses the planning and design approaches for different spatial scales. This paper reveals that 'Taking the High Ground' is the main method used in the construction of regional spatial order of Chang'an Area in Tang Dynasty, which reflects the dialectical whole of 'configurational force' and 'form' in the planning and design theories of ancient China. China's military-civil fusion (MCF) policy has attracted global attention. Since 2010, China has constructed over 30 MCF national demonstration bases (MCFNDBs) to optimise local industrial structure and promote local economic development. However, the evaluation of the actual economic effects of these MCFNDBs has not reached a consensus. We use panel data for 285 cities from 2006–2017 to investigate the economic effect of MCFNDBs by difference-in-difference estimation. We find that constructing MCFNDBs are significantly beneficial to upgrading the urban industrial structure in less developed regions and provincial capital cities; however, it plays an insignificant role in the industrial structure rationalisation. Unequal outcomes resulting from urbanization can pose a significant challenge to sustainable development. Vehicles are an important urbanization dimension as a critical component of urban infrastructure by providing mobility and accessibility to social services. China's vehicle ownership (referred to as in-use vehicle stocks) has been growing quickly since 2000, but its per capita stocks are still much lower than that in developed economies. This raises the question of whether and when China's vehicle stocks will reach a peak level close to that in the developed countries. By analyzing vehicle stocks in 283 Chinese cities during 2001–2018, we have the following findings: (1) vehicle stocks are predominantly distributed in northern and eastern coastal cities and provincial capital cities; (2) inequality in vehicle ownership rates between cities shows a declining trend at both national and region scales; (3) the growth of vehicle ownership rates follows an S-shape curve and most cities are still at the early stage of motorization; (4) China is likely to have a lower saturation level of vehicle ownership rate. These results could help to accurately forecast future vehicle demand in China, estimate the resulting environmental impacts, and explore strategies to achieve carbon neutrality in transportation. Based on panel data from 210 prefecture-level cities in China from 2003 to 2021, this study employs the Time-Varying Differences-in-Differences (Time-Varying DID) approach to systematically examine the impact of smart city construction on pollution emissions and its underlying mechanisms. Additionally, the Propensity Score Matching–Differences-in-Differences method is employed for further validation. The research findings indicate that Smart City Construction (SCC) significantly reduces urban Volume of Sewage Discharge (VSD), sulfur dioxide emissions (SO2), and Emissions of Fumes and Dust (EFD), thereby mitigating pollution emissions (PE) and enhancing environmental quality. Mechanism analysis reveals that SCC achieves these effects through scale effects, structural effects, and technological effects. City heterogeneity analysis shows that provincial capital cities exhibit a stronger suppression effect on pollution emissions compared to non-provincial capital cities. Moreover, cities with lower levels of education attainment demonstrate a stronger ability to curb pollution emissions, while larger cities exhibit a more pronounced impact on mitigating pollution emissions. Ecological deterioration, air pollution, and resource depletion have shrouded the vast regions of China, raising widespread concerns about the sustainable development of the domestic economy. Although financial agglomeration has become a pivotal approach for China to realize green transformation, there is a lack of evidence against the causal correlation between financial agglomeration and sustainable development of the regional economy. To fill this gap, using the data of 29 provincial capital cities in China spanning from 2009 to 2019 and adopting individual time bidirectional fixed effect model, IV-GMM approach, and alternative modeling techniques, this paper investigates the impact of financial agglomeration on sustainable development of the regional economy for the first time. The results indicate that there is a significant positive correlation between financial agglomeration and the sustainable development of the regional economy. Financial agglomeration facilitates the improvement of regional energy efficiency, and the latter further mediates the relationship between financial agglomeration and sustainable development of the regional economy. In addition, the empirical results also demonstrate that the higher the economic policy uncertainty, the weaker the positive relationship between financial agglomeration and energy efficiency. In the past two decades, landscape archaeology has undergone a paradigm shift from traditional theoretical methods to being practically oriented, with the advent of the widespread application of philosophical theories (such as phenomenology, hermeneutics, and others) and the emerging new technologies in social sciences. Nevertheless, landscape archaeology has not been able to garner the attention it requires from Chinese archaeology, which fails to understand its significance behind the systematic regional survey methods. Rather, for a long time, the study of the man-land relationship has been considered to be a part of environmental archaeology. Besides, the landscape elements in archaeological excavations were often considered as mechanical interactions between people and the environment, resulting in a lack of holistic and systematic research on a selection of archaeological sites. The focus however has remained restricted to the earthen remains and relics in the archaeological process. The Northern Wei Dynasty was the first nomadic regime to control the Central Plains in the Chinese history and moved its capital three times for the purpose of sinicization. The recent archaeological excavations of the ancient city of Shengle, imperial palaces, tombs, sacrificial sites, gardens, Yinshan palaces, and the border defense facilities during the Shengle period of the Northern Wei Dynasty have revealed several phenomena and evidence of the cultural integration of the various ethnic groups. As mentioned earlier, the limitations in the research horizon have led to the in-depth analysis and research of archaeological relics and archaeological data during this period seeking the desired attention. This study considers landscape archaeology, anthropology, sociology, and history as the primary research methods pertinent to the above situation. It considers archaeological relics and archaeological data from the prosperous period as the research object and thoroughly analyses the relationship between the people and the earthen landscape relics, to reveal the social culture, the religious beliefs, the politics, and the military behind the integration of the multi-ethnic culture, along with the cognition of the natural environments, the social structures, and the religious spaces. Simultaneously, the analysis results would also endeavor to integrate the artifacts, the relics (space, structure, layout, and locational relationship), road grids, surrounding environment, and several other surface space elements to restore and reproduce the prosperous social and cultural situations scenes of the bygone period. The final outcome shall become a typical research case. By comparing and combing the archaeological discoveries of the Northern and the Southern Dynasties of China and the pertinent archaeological data, we could further understand and explain the multi-ethnic cultural development and evolution while providing an essential theoretical basis for the present social and cultural research on the Northern Wei Dynasty in China. Introduction: Arid and semi-arid regions encompass nearly 40% of the Earth's land surface and are characterized by extensive undeveloped land, scarce water resources, and fragile ecosystems. The arid northwestern China is a representative arid and semi-arid region. It has developed rapidly in recent years, leading to a significant increase in human activity. This increased activity has had a pronounced impact on the ecosystem, posing a major challenge to the environment. The close relationship between human activities and ecosystem service value (ESV) is crucial for the healthy development of both humans and ecosystems. However, the intricate nature of this relationship and the degree to which they are codependent remain unclear and require further investigation. Methods: This study investigates the impact of human activities on land use intensity (LUI) and degree of urbanization (URB). It comprehensively evaluates the spatial and temporal distribution of human activities and ESV, quantifying their coordination through coupling models. Results: This work provides valuable insights and theoretical support for promoting the coordinated development of human activities and ESV. Overall, the LUI in the arid northwestern region decreased (from 0.485 in 2000 to 0.459 in 2020), while the URB increased (from 0.060 in 2000 to 0.087 in 2020). The ESV significantly increased, with a total growth of 556.58 billion yuan. In prefecture- level cities, the growth in ESV values ranges from 75.19 yuan/hm2 to 10,062.49 yuan/hm2.The coupling coordination degree between ESV and LUI has changed over time, transitioning from uncoordinated development to coordinated development. In addition, the coordination between ESV and URB has evolved from uncoordinated development to transitional coordination. The level of coordination between human activities and ESV in provincial capital cities significantly influences the coordination in surrounding cities. Discussion: In conclusion, effective development recommendations are provided based on the ESV, LUI, and URB of different cities, along with a proposed development strategy for ecosystem service functions that aligns with the 14th Five-Year Plan and "Vision 2035" of each province. In the process of economic urbanization, because of competition among cities, agglomerations and polarization of regional economies are produced. This paper studies the urban polarization with Chinese characteristics and the regional economic urbanization, which include the imbalance under the influence of different geographical factors between the east and west of China and the imbalance under the comprehensive influence of natural and human factors in the province. The urban economic polarization index (UEPI) is constructed to describe the regional imbalance caused by the economic polarization of capital cities in China. The purpose is to explore the polarization of provincial capitals in their respective provinces and to reveal the strength and evolution of their role in the imbalance of economic urbanization. Then, combined with relevant analysis of natural and socio-economic background data, the induced factors and the mechanism of urban polarization are diagnosed. The results show the following: (1) The UEPI can accurately measure the polarization level of provincial capitals through the calculation of typical cities. (2) Based on the UEPI, capital cities can be divided into four categories, which include inapparent, obvious, prominent, and striking. Different cities have different effects on the imbalance in economic urbanization. (3) The main inducing factors of urban polarization are the resource environment, policy system, industrial structure, investment, scientific and technological innovation, location, and extroversion. The exploding popularity of social networks provides a new opportunity to study disasters and public emotion. Among the social networks, Weibo is one of the largest microblogging services in China. Taking Guangdong and Guangxi in the south of China as a case, Web Scraper was used to obtain Weibo texts related to floods in 2020. The spatial distribution of floods was analyzed using Kernel Density Estimation. Public emotion was analyzed using Natural Language Processing tools. The association between floods and public emotion was explored through correlation analysis methods. The results indicated that: (1) Weibo texts could be utilized as effective data to identify urban waterlogging risk in Guangdong and Guangxi. (2) The waterlogging was mainly distributed in the southern part of Guangdong and Guangxi, especially in the provincial capitals and coastal cities. (3) Public emotion was predominantly negative, especially during periods of heavy precipitation. (4) There was a strong correlation between public emotion and floods in spatial–temporal variation. The degree of negative public emotion was significantly influenced by the number of waterlogging points. The ecological environment damage caused by human activities will aggravate the damage of natural disasters and seriously restrict the socioeconomic sustainable development. Therefore, it is a key issue to coordinate the coupling relationship between socioeconomic development (SE) and ecological environment (EE) to reduce the damage of natural disasters to human activities and guarantee the socioeconomic sustainable development after natural disasters. It is an important issue to explore the relationship between economy and environment in post-disaster reconstruction areas and how to coordinate the areas with slower economic development and higher risk of ecological destruction. Based on this, an index system of ecological environment and socioeconomic development was constructed by using the data in the statistical yearbook from 2005 to 2018. The dynamic deviation maximization (DM) method and coupling coordination degree model (CCDM) were used to study the coordination relationship between socioeconomic and ecological environment in Wenchuan earthquake disaster area. The results showed that the coupling coordination degree (CCD) presented an upward trend in the period of post-disaster reconstruction in Wenchuan earthquake disaster area, and the CCD is highly related to the regional topography, city location, urban comprehensive economic level, and urban ecological endowment. The results indicated that the CCD shows a downward trend from provincial capitals to surrounding cities on the basis of the perspective of urban spatial distribution characteristics. On the basis of the research, this paper analyzes the reasons for the differences in CCD scores of different cities and puts forward corresponding policy suggestions, which including speeding up industrial transformation, increasing government investment, and strengthening transportation infrastructure construction. Taking urban agglomeration as the main object to optimize the spatial layout of urbanization is an important part of constructing the national land spatial planning system, and the essence of spatial optimization is to promote the coordinated development of large, medium and small cities within the urban agglomeration. Based on the measurement of urbanization coordination level of 26 cities in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration from 2001 to 2016, this paper analyses and identifies the urban coordination relationship by using the methods of social network and multi- dimensional- scaling, and explores its internal evolution mechanism. The results show that: (1) With the improvement of the urbanization coordination level of the cities in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration, the internal space of the urban agglomeration is obviously changed. The high coordination cities gradually show a Zshaped distribution with Shanghai as the core, and the low coordination cities were stably distributed in the expanded area of the urban agglomeration. (2) According to the correlation strength of the coordination level of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration, the cohesive subgroups were divided. The values of weighted average centrality and the contact density of the cohesive subgroups of the urbanization coordination relationship increased, and the polarization effect of Shanghai was more obvious. (3) The coordination structure of the urban agglomeration was identified from two dimensions of space and time. The Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration has transformed from the "circle layer" structure centered on the provincial capital cities under the influence of spatial distance into the structure of "coreperiphery" under the influence of temporal distance. (4) The evolution of spatial structure of the urban agglomeration was influenced by the change of coordination level of population, land and economy urbanization. Compared with population and economy urbanization, land urbanization has a significant role in promoting the level of urban coordination. The optimizing policies of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration were proposed from the perspective of coordination after analyses of its spatial structure. This paper examines the (non)metonymic usage of capital names in news articles from Mainland Chinese and Taiwan Chinese and shows that this phenomenon is actually more complex than might have been expected. We annotated capital names extracted from a self-built news corpus with insights from previous studies on place name metonymies in Cognitive Linguistics and identified factors that would influence their (non)metonymic usage. To quantitatively explore the data, logistic regression analysis was employed. The statistical results reveal that the variation in the (non)metonymic capital names is a result of an intricate interplay of a number of conceptual, lectal and discursive factors: (1) more metonymic capital names are found in subject than non-subject position and in political than non-political news topics; types of capital may influence their metonymic usage; (2) differences between Mainland Chinese and Taiwan Chinese cannot be ignored, especially for the interpretation of a specific metonymy, i.e. CAPITAL FOR GOVERNMENT; (3) the (non)metonymic usage of a capital name is also determined by its sequencing and location in discourse. We hope this study may shed some light on the usage-based trend of current Cognitive Linguistics, i.e. investigating metonymy in authentic linguistic data by a range of empirical methodologies. Based on archival research and interviews with state officials and state-affiliated academics, this article argues that the Chinese state's decision to slow down rural land transfer since 2017 is a Polanyian countermovement against the adverse consequences of earlier, excessive labor and land commodification. The central government's drive for land consolidation is contingent upon and structurally constrained by the process of rural labor commodification. By focusing on connections between land and labor and situating agrarian transformation under the context of national capital accumulation, this study examines land beyond agriculture and argues for the continued importance of the classical Agrarian Questions. China's urbanisation process is unique compared to that of other developed economies in that while the rural population is migrating to the cities in large numbers, the area of rural homestead use also continues to increase. This research uses macro data and a threshold model to further analyse this phenomenon of "farmers leaving while rural homestead increasing". Specifically, we focus on the mechanisms of action, development patterns and regional differences in the impact of the rate of rural–urban migration (RRUM) on the rate of increase in the area of rural homesteads (IARH), and discuss the spatial spillover effects of the impact between the two. The results of the research show that: (1) There is an "inverted U-shaped" double threshold effect on the impact of RRUM on IARH. (2) Rural population density and regional urban–rural income disparity are used as threshold variables, respectively, resulting in a sudden change in the relationship between RRUM and IARH. (3) The threshold effect of RRUM on IARH mainly exists in the central and western regions, non-minority nationality areas, non-provincial capital cities and non-resource-based cities. (4) The RRUM can not only directly affect the local IARH, but also indirectly affect the surrounding areas through spatial spillover effects. • We analysed the influencing factors of urban eco-efficiency in Western China. • The US-SBM model and spatial econometric models were used for 84 cities' data. • Urban eco-efficiency showed a fluctuating upward trend during 2004–2017. • Economic development and urbanization had U-shaped impact on urban eco-efficiency. • Four explanatory variables showed a positive impact on urban eco-efficiency. Improving eco-efficiency can promote sustainable development. This study first evaluated the urban eco-efficiency of 84 cities in Western China from 2004 to 2017 by the undesirable-super-slack-based measure (US-SBM) and analysed their spatiotemporal characteristics, and then investigated its influencing factors using spatial econometric models. The results indicated that the urban eco-efficiency in Western China was at a relatively low level and showed a fluctuating upward trend with the highest average value of 0.65; however, capital cities of Western China have improved their eco-efficiency rapidly. Furthermore, there were obvious spatial spill-over impacts of the urban eco-efficiency in Western China. This paper also found that both the economic development level and urbanization level have "U" shaped impacts on Western China's urban eco-efficiency, which decreases at first and then rises. Similarly, increasing the proportion of secondary industry promotes urban eco-efficiency, and FDI, trade activities, improved environmental regulations as well as technological innovation capabilities have a positive impact on urban eco-efficiency in Western China. This paper also put forward corresponding policy suggestions to promote Western China's urban eco-efficiency. As an important measuring of social sustainable development, Ecological Carrying Capacity (ECC) has a pivotal role in the high-quality development of economy and society. It has great scientific and practical significance to evaluate ECC of cities. Based on component elements and structural characteristics of urban ecosystem, we use Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) to analyze spatial and temporal pattern and influencing factors of ECC of 286 cities in China during 2008–2017. The results are: (1) Areas with high ECC are mainly concentrated in the provincial capital cities, showing a diffusion trend of "from central to periphery", (2) The medium-level cities show a spreading trend of "from east to west"; (3) The number of cities in low-level areas is steadily decreasing, showing a gradual upward trend of ECC; (4) Factors such as population density, GDP, unemployment, wage, education expenditure, harmless disposal rate of household waste, industrial structure, have significant impacts on the spatial pattern of urban ECC, with different impact intensity. • We compared the structural characteristics of 18 urban agglomerations in China. • Our framework contained analysis of 3 different scales based on 4 elements' flows. • Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao urban Agglomeration had the greatest average flow (5.15). • Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomeration had the best performance in overall network. • Cities with high centrality were in the bidirectional or main spillover subgroups. Flows of different elements among cities can affect urban organizational structures, leading to specific links between and roles for cities within urban agglomerations. Previous studies have mainly focused on flows produced by specific elements in a single urban agglomeration, and they cannot reveal differences in organizational structures affected by multiple elements among different urban agglomerations. Therefore we selected 18 typical urban agglomerations in China and explored their structural characteristics under comprehensive effects of four elements: economy, resources, population and technology, with gravity model and social network analysis. Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Urban Agglomeration had a maximum flow intensity of 5.15, this concentration range was the largest from 0.65 to 3.75, indicating that more elements flowed internally. Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomeration had the largest network density at 0.412, the lowest efficiency at 0.567, and the lowest hierarchy at 0.000, showing that intercity relationships within SP were the tightest among the18 urban agglomerations. Geographical proximity and topological structure of subgroups proved that connections among subgroups were not complex, and cities of different provinces lacked close interactions. Furthermore, most of the key cities with high centrality indexes were municipalities directly under the Central Government or provincial capitals; these cities played important roles in networks and were distributed into "main spillover" and "bidirectional spillover" subgroups. This paper provides a unified analytical framework aimed at urban agglomerations that accounts for flows of multiple types of elements and explores urban organizational structures, and our results could provide scientific guidance for promoting the coordinated and sustainable development of urban agglomerations. The development of cities as products of human society is in line with cyclical law. This study applies the system dynamics model to construct a city development model for Beijing, China's capital city, and analyzes the simulation results from an ecological perspective. The results suggest that Beijing is still in the process of transitioning from fast development to maturity. This trend will continue until the mid-2030s, and this transition process will be composed of several periods. The motivation for development in each period is different. The industry will be the main driving force in the foreseeable future, and the lifespan of each period is approximately 10 years. Major events such as the Olympic Games are the key to evolution. Therefore, Beijing should exploit each event as booster for growth in the next period. Beijing is the capital city of China. Based on our research, the city is in its maturity stage and facing metropolitan issues. In China, an urban plan text contains four parts: guiding ideology, development goal, key task, and implementation path. The findings of this research should make substantial contributions to the second and third parts. We have demonstrated that Beijing is transitioning from fast development to maturity in a cyclic curve. The key motivation for city evolution is industry. Big events such as the Olympic Games are key turning points, and these two findings steer goal-making in the planning process. This study analysed how local governments react to intergovernmental competition for private capital in the public goods market. Using microlevel data for public-private partnership (PPP) projects in China from 2012 to 2018, we found that the more private capital rival cities have attracted, the more likely local governments start to introduce PPP projects, especially those whose future returns are paid by governments. The results are robust to an instrumental variable estimation using the financing demand of rival cities. The effect of rival projects was found to be related to information disclosure, financing facilitation, and governors' responsibility. The results suggest that local governments tend to promise future obligations for payment to decrease advanced capital expenditures. Innovation is the key to economic development. This study used the difference-in-difference model to examine the impact of the Chinese Western Development Strategy (WDS) implemented in 2001 on regional innovation. The results showed that the WDS has not effectively promoted regional innovation, and this effect has strengthened annually since the second year. Regions with higher regional innovation suffer more from the policy inhibiting effect, which indicates that the policies of the WDS have not been fully utilized. A heterogeneity analysis demonstrated varying effects on cities with different administrative levels. Provincial capital cities have an absorbing effect on non-provincial capital cities. The mechanism analysis shows that the WDS has aggravated local fiscal imbalances and fiscal preference in valuing investments and neglecting people's livelihoods. Both these factors appear as chain mediation effects. Therefore, high-quality development in the western regions requires the strengthening of the regional innovation environment and a suitable institutional path to effectively enhance regional innovation capabilities. China's electricity sector suffers from significant overcapacity in coalfired generation. Between 2000 and 2020, China built more than 970 gigawatts of new coal power capacity, accounting for more than 70% of all new coal capacity worldwide. Building large amounts of coal and other generation capacity has continued despite clear indicators of overcapacity before the mid-2010s. This article uses a Marxian political economy theoretical framework to assert that generation overcapacity is a symptom of China's broader problem of capital overaccumulation. More specifically, it is the result of governance choices to deal with the overaccumulation problem. In so doing, this article presents a new conceptual pathway to understanding overcapacity in the electricity sector, which mainstream discourse attributes to bad planning and mistaken economic assumptions. Through the case of Chinese coal generation overcapacity, this article advocates for examining contemporary political economy issues through the conceptual lens of overaccumulation and devaluation management—in China and beyond. It proceeds by highlighting three central features of structural problems in contemporary Chinese political economy. The first is the expression of capital overaccumulation as massive coal generation overcapacity. The second is the structural bias toward overbuilding generation infrastructure; this is due both to the bulky and long-lived nature of electricity sector fixed capital and the sector's key role in circulating capital throughout the economy. The third feature is how—given insufficient consumption demand—capital is offloaded spatially, temporally, and biophysically onto migrant contract workers. Together, these features trace governance decisions made by state entities at different scales and times to deal with the imperatives of capital while maintaining economic, social, and political legitimacy. This framework highlights the ongoing management of overaccumulation and devaluation as a core governance imperative. Improving the well-being of residents within a limited ecological environment is a fundamental requirement for sustainable development. This paper constructs a novel multidimensional evaluation framework to make well-being performance (EWP) evaluation results comprehensive and universal. Meanwhile, the vertical and horizontal opening grade method, coupled coordination model, and spatial exploratory data analysis (ESDA) were introduced to measure and analyse EWP, which provides new ideas for EWP evaluation research. The results show that (1) the EWP of each dimension in China is not high, but the EWP of each dimension shows a good upwards trend. The EWPs of each dimension can basically remain stable or enter the primary coordination stage. (2) There is a north–south difference in EWP, which is opposite to the economic difference; that is, EWP in the north is better than that in the south. (3) The EWP of each dimension is also different, which shows an arrangement pattern of city dimension > province dimension > region dimension. (4) EWP is generally higher in provincial capital cities, which is significantly different from other cities in local provinces. The basic reason for this difference comes from the snowball effect of the provincial capital city itself and the siphon effect it has on the surrounding cities. The US is currently pursuing a cold war strategy against China, having initiated a trade war and delisted Chinese companies to restrict China's development. Although China interacts with other countries through foreign direct investment, it prevents the circulation of speculative monies from the international market by enclosing its national capital account. As many Chinese companies have a variable interest entity structure, their delisting from the US will motivate relisting in Hong Kong. Urban morphology refers to the physical form of a city that is constantly transformed and updated in the process of urbanization. A valuable source of data on 'built forms' is modern remote sensing technology, which provides a variety of products on building footprints and heights at national, continental, and global levels. A large-scale comparison of urban morphologies is important for assessing urban development as well as its influence on urban ecology; however, this has not been well documented so far. This study includes 41 cities in China and 36 in Europe with various city sizes, population densities, and climate features. We applied 3D landscape metrics and principal component analysis (PCA) to compare the spatial aspects of the urban morphology of these cities. We found: (1) measurements of the building height, surface fluctuation, and texture directionality of urban building layouts in China are higher than those of European cities, while the latter are high-density and compact built landscapes; (2) a significant clustering phenomenon for Chinese and European cities revealed by PCA, with the former showing a much more aggregated pattern, indicating a relatively uniform morphology of urban buildings in China; (3) distinctions between cities in China and Europe are suggested by the first principal component, to which building height, surface fluctuation, building complexity, and spatial distance among buildings contribute significantly; and (4) the second principal component (mainly represented by maximum building height, surface area, volume, and shape metrics) can separate large metropolitan cities and provincial capitals from cities with lower urban population, smaller size, and slower economic development. Our results demonstrate the potential of 3D landscape metrics for measuring urban morphology. Together with a temporal analysis, these metrics are useful for quantifying how urban morphology varies in space and time on a large scale, as well as evaluating the process of urbanization. Evaluation of the carrying capacity and spatial pattern matching of urban–rural construction land is critical for solving problems associated with irrational land use and the destruction of ecosystems. Here, we present a case study exploring the spatial matching relationship between the carrying capacity and current development status of urban–rural construction land in Nanchang, the capital city of Jiangxi Province, China. Land suitability evaluation for urban and rural construction was performed using the analytic hierarchical process and restrictive coefficient method. The spatial matching degree between current construction land and available construction land was obtained by a spatial overlay analysis. Results show that the area most suitable for construction land development (19.2% of the total) is mainly concentrated in the central urban districts, while the relatively suitable area (17.5% of the total) is present around the most suitable area. The ultimate development intensity (i.e., carrying capacity threshold) of construction land in the study region is 41.4%, and the residual development intensity (i.e., development potential) is 24.2%. The available construction land (including most suitable and relatively suitable areas) is generally abundant. The spatial matching degree of construction land ranges from 69.5% to 99.1% in different counties (districts). Pearson's correlation analysis reveals that the spatial matching degree is positively correlated with the carrying capacity threshold of construction land (r = 0.926; p < 0.01) and the abundance of available construction land (r = 0.732; p < 0.05). This paper encapsulates the Chinese Airline Network (CAN) into multi-layer infrastructures via the “ k -core decomposition” method. The network is divided into three layers: Core layer, containing airports of provincial capital cities, is densely connected and sustains most flight flow; Bridge layer, consisting of airports in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, mainly connects two other layers; and Periphery layer, comprising airports of remote areas, sustains little flight flow. Moreover, it is unveiled that CAN stays the most robust when low-degree nodes or high flight flow links are removed, which is similar to the Worldwide Airline Network (WAN), albeit less redundant. Accurate urban morphology provided by Local Climate Zones (LCZ), a universal surface classification scheme, offers opportunities for studies of urban heat risk, urban ventilation, and transport planning. In recent years, researchers have attempted to generate LCZ maps worldwide with the World Urban Database and Access Portal Tools (WUDAPT). However, the accuracy of LCZ mapping is not satisfactory and cannot fulfill the quality demands of practical usage. Here, we constructed a high-quality sample dataset from Chinese cities and presented a patch-based classification framework that employs chessboard segmentation and multi-seasonal images for LCZ mapping. Compared with the latest WUDAPT method, the overall accuracy for all LCZ types (OA) and urban LCZ types (OAu) of our framework increased by about 10% and 9%, respectively. Furthermore, based on the analysis of population distribution, we first gave the population density of different built-up LCZs of Chinese cities and found a hierarchical effect of population density among built-up LCZs in different size cities. Urban spatial expansion is known as an important indicator of urbanization. In order to provide a reference for urban spatial expansion in the future high-quality development strategy of the Yellow River Basin (YB) cities in China, it is necessary to identify and calculate urban spatial expansion patterns. For this reason, we provide a "Spatiotemporal pattern-Center of gravity migrationt-Expansion pattern" solution to identify and calculate urban spatial expansion patterns in the YB. More specifically, 78 prefecture-level cities in the YB were selected as the subjects of the study, using the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Line Scan System (DMSP/OLS) and the National Polarimetric Partnership/Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP/VIIRS) nighttime light data (NTL), together with the center of gravity shift and common edge detection models, to identify the YB urban expansion patterns from 2000–2018. The results suggest that: (1) on the spatial pattern, there is a obvious difference in the expansion intensity and growth rate of the urban built-up (UB) areas of cities in the upper and middle reaches of YB. In addition, there are also certain differences between the expansion patterns of provincial capital cities and non-capital cities; (2) The UB areas of YB has steadily expand from 3,500 km2 in 2000 to 10,600 km2 in 2018, amongst which the expansion of provincial capital cities is the most obvious 1919 km2; (3) Interestingly it is also discovered that urban expansion in Qinghai Province, the sourceland of the YB, takes place in a diffuse way, with the shifting of the centre of gravity for four types of total area, net increase in area, rate of growth and intensity of expansion followed a "northwest to southeast" tendency of development.
