Due to unclear research boundaries and a confusion between direct and indirect emissions, the impact of the circular economy (CE) on carbon emissions needs to be researched in depth. In this paper, we use a life cycle model based on carbon emissions and carbon reduction to build an emissions (reduction) matrix for the carbon footprint (CF) of coal-fuelled power generation, and then calculate the life cycle carbon emissions from China's coal-fuelled power CE parks. Results show that carbon emissions from China's coal-fuelled power at the industrial park level follow the trend of raw coal production and consumption, increasing from 2000 to a maximum of 3.25 billion tCO 2 e in 2014, with the proportion of direct emissions remaining stable at above 86%. The life cycle CF in 2016 was 778.9 gCO 2 /kWh, a decrease of 20.81% compared to 2000. The positive and negative impacts of the CE from 2000 to 2016 were quantitatively analysed, and resource recycling measures will reduce the overall carbon emissions of industrial parks through the substitution of carbon-intensive energy sources. Finally, policy recommendations are proposed to reduce life cycle carbon emissions by energy replacement and embodied emissions control. Carbon sink is an effective measure to balance the contradiction between economic development and mitigating climate change in China. This paper reveals that environmental performance of forest carbon sinks reflects in economic value by reducing the emissions abatement cost. The carbon trading system is used to demonstrate the environmental and economic value of forests. The forest carbon sequestrations are estimated and predicted in different regions of China. Furthermore, a market model has been established to assess how the emission reduction costs can be reduced among all regions by the year 2030 to achieve the goal of carbon emissions intensity in China. The results show that carbon sequestration trades can reduce the emissions reduction costs and it can represent the value of forest carbon sinks. In particular, when economic growth is maintained in moderate and low level in China, the national carbon trading market with carbon sequestration will decrease the carbon emissions reduction costs more effectively. Besides, carbon sink can bring economic benefits to under-developed regions where there are rich forest resources. Land use and land cover change (LUCC) has had a profound effect on terrestrial carbon stocks, though its impact on the terrestrial carbon cycle remains uncertain. LUCC and rapid urbanization have occurred in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region over the past decades, which have greatly influenced regional carbon stocks. Based on the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model, this paper estimated the temporal and spatial variation of carbon stocks in the BTH region from 1990 to 2015 and explored the relationship between carbon sequestration and urbanization level at the county scale. Our results showed: (1) There was a built–up land expansion (5795 km2) at the expense of other land use types (−5548 km2, including cultivated land, woodland and grassland). (2) The total carbon stock of the BTH region decreased from 40.55 × 108 t in 1990 to 40.04 × 108 t in 2015. The soil organic matter stock accounted for more than 60% of the total carbon stock. (3) Carbon density decreased from northwest to southeast in the BTH region. Meanwhile, carbon stocks for 134 county districts decreased (carbon sources), while the other 26 county districts increased (carbon sinks) from 1990 to 2015. (4) The urbanization level had significant negative correlations with carbon sequestration in the BTH region at a county scale. urate simulation of soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics is vitally important in researching the carbon cycle in terrestrial ecosystems. Especially, the application of SOC model at the regional scale has major implications for regional and global carbon cycling. This paper addresses the regional simulation for SOC in the surface layer (0~15 cm) of paddy soils in Wuxi and Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China from 1982~2000 by linking a model of agro-ecosystem SOC dynamic simulation with GIS data on the basis of 100 × 100 m grids. The dataset includes soil profile descriptions and chemical data of 187 paddy soil samples in the Second National Soil Survey of China in 1982 and 352 paddy soil samples taken in 2000. Soil maps at a scale of 1:50,000 were used for the simulation. Results showed that the area of differences between simulated and observed SOC in 2000 (in the range of −3.6 to 3.6 Mg C ha) accounted for 50.6% of the total area. Also, when a 10% and 20% simulated increase, and a 10%, 20% and 30% simulated decrease in harvested crop straw and manure amendments were simulated to test the sensitivity of the model, simulated SOC would range from 10.26 to 50.40 Mg C ha with a standard deviation of 1.6 and 2.5, respectively. It is indicated that a key factor controlling SOC is the amount of residue and manure inputs. As for the assessment model suitability based on soil textures, soil types, and parent materials, the model seemed to perform better for clayey soils, groundwater-related paddy soils and soils derived from alluvial parent material than for loamy soils, surface water-related paddy soils and soil derived from loess material. Abstract: As a national innovative scientific and technological facility that integrates monitoring, research and demonstrations, the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN) has become one of the largest networks in the world that consists of 40 field stations, 5 sub-centers and 1 synthesis center, covering almost all typical ecosystems in China: cropland, forest, grassland, desert, marshes, lakes, bays and urban ecosystem. Its unique features are the emphasis on understanding long-term structure and function, patterns and processes of ecosystems, combination of the inter-site comprehensive research or cross-site comparison research and the voluntary site-based exploration, and the data sharing both for domestic institutions and international networks at different levels. This paper provides a brief review of CERN by introducing its developing history, objectives and missions, summarizing its progress with the long-term ecological research in China including monitoring, scientific accomplishments in carbon cycle, ecosystem structure and functions, ecosystem restoration and data management. The paper also describes CERN''s strategic plan to 2020 and its development perspectives in the future with focus on six core thematic areas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Compared to other ecosystems, estuarine ecosystems have distinct carbon flux dynamics – the lateral carbon flux incurred by tidal activities, and methane generation under the anaerobic conditions of wetland soils. The conventional estimation of gross primary production (GPP) based on the light use efficiency (LUE) model used for non-wetland terrestrial ecosystems, therefore, cannot be applied directly to estuarine wetland ecosystems. In this paper, we estimated the 2005's annual carbon budget of an estuarine wetland on Chongming Island, Shanghai, and partitioned the losses of carbon due to lateral tidal dynamics and anaerobic methane production using an innovative technique. The average GPP calculated from eddy covariance between March and November was 261.79 μmol m−2 day−1, whereas that from the LUE model was 58.84 μmol m−2 day−1. The correlation coefficient between GPP simulated from the LUE model and that calculated from flux tower data was low in the growing season ( R2=0.55). We hypothesized that tidal activities and uncounted methane release were responsible for the difference, which can be predicted from measurements of remote sensing products such as land surface water index (LSWI), evapotranspiration (ET), and tide height (TH). We developed an integrated GPP model by combining the LUE model and an autoregression model to estimate carbon budget. The average GPP from the modified model increased to 263.38 μmol m−2 day−1, and R2 for the correlation between the simulated and calculated data increased to 0.88, demonstrating the potential of our technique for GPP estimation and quantification of seasonal variation in estuarine ecosystems. The approach developed in this study has great potential for correcting unavoidable errors when estimating carbon budget of coastal wetlands. Furthermore, global warming is expected to accelerate sea level rise, which may enhance the effect of tidal activities and increase the difficulty in estimating coastal carbon budgets using conventional methods. This paper explores the environmental implications of food consumption, from the viewpoint of carbon consumption in Beijing urban households, considering the effects of increasing carbon flux on the environment and alterations in food systems in terms of the carbon cycle. The average food carbon consumption was calculated and analysed in terms of household socioeconomic variables. Several patterns of food carbon consumption with definite socioeconomic characteristics were identified. An average of 279.3 kg food carbon was consumed by households per annum, and was dominated by grain carbon (34.3%). The number of household members, average household age, proportion of male members, education and occupation influence total food carbon consumption of a household. Income influenced consumption of certain foods, thus causing differences in the structure of food carbon consumption. High food carbon consumption patterns tend to emerge in large-size, medium-age, high-male, high-income, medium-education families. Among these, households with a higher age and higher education level have a higher vegetarian carbon dietary pattern, while other households have a higher meat carbon dietary pattern. Organic carbon storage in agricultural soils plays a key role in the terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle. Paddy soils support important croplands in many parts of the world, especially in Asia. A thorough understanding of organic carbon storage in Chinese paddy soils would be helpful to both greenhouse gases emission and carbon sequestration studies. This paper examines soil organic carbon density (SOCD) and storage (SOCS) of paddy soils in China using the newly compiled 1:1,000,000 digital soil map of China as well as data from 1490 paddy soil profiles. Results show that paddy soils in China cover about 45.7 M ha, nearly 1.5 times more than the results of other studies. In China, the mean SOCD of paddy soils at a depth of 0-100 cm is 111.4 t C ha-1, with a SOCS of 5.1 Pg. These results are 66-75% higher than studies from other scientists. However, the mean SOCD of paddy soils from 0 to 20 cm is 37.6 t C ha-1, with a SOCS of 1.7 Pg, which is 89% higher than studies from other scientists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The North China Craton, one of the oldest continental blocks in the world, comprises Paleoproterozoic metamorphic sedimentary formations that record the effects of multiple major events in early Earth history, including the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) and its consequent Lomagundi-Jatuli carbon isotope event (LJE). The lack of focused research on the geological record of LJE-equivalent rocks of the Jiaodong Peninsula, Shandong Province, eastern China, has hindered our understanding of the Precambrian atmospheric oxygen evolution recorded by rocks of the North China Craton. This paper considers carbon and oxygen isotope and trace element geochemical data recovered from marble deposits of the Paleoproterozoic Jingshan Group (2.20–1.90 Ga) of the Jiaolai Basin. The investigated strata display a pronounced positive δ13C V-PDB excursion greater than 4.2 ‰. δ13C V-PDB and δ18O V-SMOW values range from −3.7 ‰ to 5.4 ‰ and 4.5 ‰ to 18.7 ‰, respectively. Positive co-variance of carbon and oxygen isotope values of the analyzed Jingshan Group samples is interpreted to reflect the effects of metamorphism and water–rock reactions. Marble deposits of the Jingshan Group experienced recrystallization, metamorphism, and silicification resulting in strong decarbonation. High amphibolite facies metamorphism may have reduced δ13C V-PDB by 3 ‰ to 5 ‰. Thus, estimated original sedimentary δ13C V-PDB values of as great as +8.4 ‰ suggest the existence of a strong positive anomaly that may reflect the global Lomagundi-Jatuli event. Rare earth and other trace element geochemical results of the present study suggest that banded iron formation (BIF) deposits associated with the Jingshan Group marble formed in a redox stratified ocean in the Jiaolai Basin dominated by ferruginous conditions. Moreover, our results suggest that positive carbon isotope anomaly associated with the LJE is largely constrained to sediment deposited in shallow and coastal marine environments. Process-related carbon emissions, which cannot be completely eliminated by the improvement of processes and energy structure, are recognized as an enormous challenge for in-depth decarbonization. To accelerate the achievement of carbon neutrality, the concept of 'artificial carbon cycle' is proposed based on the integrated system of process-related carbon emissions from high-emitting industries and CCU technology as a potential pathway towards a sustainable future. This paper conducts a systematic review on the integrated system with the case of China, which is the largest carbon-emitting and manufacturing country, to provide a clearer and more meaningful analysis. Multi-index assessment was used to organize the literature and draw the useful conclusion. Based on literature review, the high-quality carbon sources, reasonable carbon capture approaches and promising chemical products were identified and analyzed. Then the potential and practicability of the integrated system was further summarized and analyzed. Initiatives to mitigate climate change have recently aroused great interest in the role of natural carbon sinks in coastal ecosystems. Seaweeds are widely distributed in the world and represent a large biomass. Since they are part of the global carbon reserves, they remove carbon dioxide and influence climate change. Using the recent 20 years of seaweed mariculture in China's coastal areas as a case, this paper quantifies the carbon storage in cultivated seaweed biomass, and evaluates the carbon sink potential, the remediation ability of nitrogen and phosphorus and other environmental benefits. The carbon sink potential of cultivated seaweeds exhibits a rising trend from 2000 to 2019. The total carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal amount of seaweed were 3,551,754.9 ± 177,587.75, 297,772.25 ± 14,888.61, 39,967.15 ± 1998.36 tons according to the seaweed cultivation yield in China coast. The total benefit of carbon sequestration was 22,405.67 ± 259.59 million CNY, and the average benefit was 1120.28 ± 263.27 million CNY, with the average annual growth rate of 4.00%. The total environmental benefit was 1,962,020.88 ± 22,747.42 million CNY, and the average benefit was 98,103.04 ± 23,073.08 million CNY, with the average annual growth rate of 4.00%. The present study illustrates distinctly the ecological value of large-scale cultivated seaweeds in increasing marine carbon sequestration and resolving offshore environmental issues, which is an efficient approach and comparable to other key marine ecosystems. Rapidly predicting and revealing the spatiotemporal characteristics and driving factors of land-use changes in carbon storage within megacities under different scenarios is crucial to achieving sustainable development. In this study, Jinan City (JNC) is taken as the study area, and the Markov-FLUS-InVEST model is utilized to predict and analyze the spatiotemporal variation in carbon storage in 2030 under three scenarios, namely, the natural development scenario (S1), the ecological conservation scenario (S2), and the economic development scenario (S3). The drivers of carbon storage changes were identified using an optimal parameter-based geographic detection (OPGD) model. The findings indicate that (1) land use from 2010 to 2018 shows a trend of continuous expansion of construction land and reduction in arable land. (2) The main types of carbon pools were cropland, forest, and grassland, accounting for more than 96% of the total amount. Carbon storage showed a decreasing trend from 2010 to 2018, and the main type of carbon pool that decreased was cropland. The center of gravity of carbon storage increases and decreases was located in the southern Lixia District, and the center of gravity of increase and decrease moved to the southwest by 3057.48 m and 1478.57 m, respectively. (3) From 2018 to 2030, the reductions in carbon stocks were 3.20 × 106 t (S1), 2.60 × 106 t (S2), and 4.26 × 106 t (S3), and the carbon release was about 9 times (S1), 4 times (S2), and 10 times (S3) that of the carbon sink. (4) The contribution of slope (A2) ∩ nighttime light index (B6) and elevation (A1) ∩ nighttime light index (B6) to the regional heterogeneity of carbon stocks was the largest among the interaction drivers. To sum up, this study deepens the simulation of spatial and temporal dynamics of carbon storage under land-use changes in megacities and the related driving mechanism, which can provide the basis for scientific decision-making for cities to conduct territorial spatial planning and ecological protection and restoration. Background: Three-North Afforestation Program (TNAP) in China is the largest ecological restoration project on Earth (ongoing from 1978 to 2050), harboring a huge area of newly planted forests, which provides a wealth of goods and ecosystem services that benefit society at levels ranging from region to East Asia. This project-induced carbon (C) sink has been expected to be large, but its size and location remain uncertain. Results: In this study, we investigated the changes in the C stocks of biomass, soil C and the C accumulation benefited from the ecological effects in the project areas from 1978 to 2017 within the Three-North regions (4.069 × 106 km2), and evaluated its project-induced C sequestration. Using a combination of remote sensing images, field observations and national forest inventory data, we estimated a total ecosystem sink of 47.06 Tg C per year (1 Tg = 1012 g) increased by the TNAP implementation. Importantly, we first found that the C sink via the ecological effects of this project could contribute to a high proportion up to 15.94%, indicating a critical role of ecological effects in shaping the distribution of C stocks in the protective forests. This finding suggests that it is necessary to explicitly consider carbon sequestration benefited from the ecological effects when estimating C sink and parameterizing C models of the restoration projects in China and globally. Conclusions: Our results update the estimates of C pools in the world's largest ecological restoration project area, demonstrating that this project has substantially contributed to mitigating the climate change. Purpose: Carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) mediate carbohydrate turnover and play vital roles in plant- and microbial-derived carbon decomposition. However, the changes of genes that encoding enzymes for plant- and microbial-derived carbon decomposition along environmental gradients remains unclear. Methods: We used metagenomic sequencing to explore changes in genes encoding enzymes for carbon decomposition in five forest sites along an elevational gradient (1503–3182 m) on Qinling Mountain, China. Results: The genes encoding CAZymes showed various patterns along the elevational gradient. In particular, the abundance of genes encoding auxiliary enzymes and glycoside hydrolases decreased with increasing elevation. The abundance of genes encoding enzymes for plant- and fungi-derived carbon decomposition was higher at low elevations than at high elevations, whereas the abundance of genes encoding enzymes for bacteria-derived carbon decomposition was higher at high elevations than at low elevations. The results indicate contrasting patterns of fungal- and bacterial-derived carbon decomposition with elevation. Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were the dominant species that decomposed dead plant and microbial biomass. Moreover, our results reveal that soil properties (i.e., ammonium nitrogen and bulk density) and vegetation properties dominated the CAZymes gene distribution along the elevational gradient. Conclusion: Bacteria- and fungi-derived carbon decomposition potentials show contrasting elevational patterns in forest soils; soil and vegetation properties are common controls for the elevational patterns. Purpose: As a huge natural carbon storage, wetlands play an important role in the global carbon cycle. However, the spatial pattern and storage of soil organic carbon (SOC) in wetland ecosystems remain largely uncertain due to large spatial heterogeneity and insufficient field observations. Methods: In this study, we predict the spatial pattern of SOC density and estimated SOC storage in wetlands of Northeast China based on 819 field samples and multiple geospatial data using random forest algorithm. Results: The SOC density of wetlands at different depths was affected differently by environmental factors and the SOC density in the surface layer (0–30 cm) was more susceptible to climatic change. The correlation coefficients (r) between the SOC density predicted by the random forest model and the measured SOC density were 0.86, 0.77 and 0.73 in 0–30, 30–60 and 60–100 cm soil depths, respectively. Our estimation showed that Northeast China holds huge wetland SOC storage in the amount of 3.40 ± 0.13 Pg C. The average wetland SOC density was 44.30 ± 1.72 kg C m−2, which decreased gradually from north to south in the study area. Conclusion: The wetland SOC density in Northeast China decreased with soil depth, and the influence of environmental factors on wetland SOC gradually decreased. Surface wetland SOC may be more sensitive to global climate change. River transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the ocean is a crucial but poorly quantified regional carbon cycle component. Large uncertainties remaining on the riverine DOC export from China, as well as its trend and drivers of change, have challenged the reconciliation between atmosphere‐based and land‐based estimates of China's land carbon sink. Here, we harmonized a large database of riverine in‐situ measurements and applied a random forest model, to quantify riverine DOC fluxes (FDOC) and DOC concentrations (CDOC) in rivers across China. This study proposes the first DOC modeling effort capable of reproducing well the magnitude of riverine CDOC and FDOC, as well as its trends, on a monthly scale and with a much wider spatial distribution over China compared to previous studies that mainly focused on annual‐scale estimates and large rivers. Results show that over the period 2001–2015, the average CDOC was 2.25 ± 0.45 mg/L and average FDOC was 4.04 ± 1.02 Tg/year. Simultaneously, we found a significant increase in FDOC (+0.044 Tg/year2, p =.01), but little change in CDOC (−0.001 mg/L/year, p >.10). Although the trend in CDOC is not significant at the country scale, it is significantly increasing in the Yangtze River Basin and Huaihe River Basin (0.005 and 0.013 mg/L/year, p <.05) while significantly decreasing in the Yellow River Basin and Southwest Rivers Basin (−0.043 and −0.014 mg/L/year, p =.01). Changes in hydrology, play a stronger role than direct impacts of anthropogenic activities in determining the spatio‐temporal variability of FDOC and CDOC across China. However, and in contrast with other basins, the significant increase in CDOC in the Yangtze River Basin and Huaihe River Basin is attributable to direct anthropogenic activities. Given the dominance of hydrology in driving FDOC, the increase in FDOC is likely to continue under the projected increase in river discharge over China resulting from a future wetter climate. Grassland ecosystems are an important component of global terrestrial ecosystems and play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. Therefore, it is important to study the carbon dioxide (CO2) process in the Middle Tien Shan grassland ecosystem, which can be regarded as a typical representative of the mountain grasslands in Xinjiang. Eddy covariance (EC) and the global carbon fluxes dataset (GCFD) were utilized to continuously monitor the Middle Tien Shan grassland ecosystem in Xinjiang throughout the 2018 growing season. The findings revealed notable daily and monthly fluctuations in net ecosystem exchange (NEE), gross primary productivity (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (Reco). On a daily basis, there was net absorption of CO2 during the day and net emission during the night. The grassland acted as a carbon sink from 6:00 to 18:00 and as a carbon source for the remaining hours of the day. On a monthly scale, June and July served as carbon sinks, whereas the other months acted as carbon sources. The accumulated NEE, GPP, and Reco during the growing season were −329.49 g C m−2, 779.04 g C m−2, and 449.55 g C m−2, respectively. On the half-hourly and daily scales, soil temperature (Ts) was the main contributor to CO2 fluxes and had the greatest influence on the variations in CO2 fluxes. Additionally, air temperature (Ta) showed a strong correlation with CO2 fluxes. The grassland ecosystems exhibited the strongest CO2 uptake, reaching its peak at soil temperatures of 25 °C. Moreover, as the air temperatures rose above 15 °C, there was a gradual decrease in NEE, while CO2 uptake increased. The applicability of GCFD data is good in the grassland ecosystem of the Middle Tien Shan Mountains, with correlations of 0.59, 0.81, and 0.73 for NEE, GPP, and Reco, respectively, compared to field observations. Underscoring how crop mulching changes the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in runoff is essential to understanding the sustainable application of cornstalk mulching. This study examined the runoff DOC quantity and quality in plots with and without cornstalk mulching under various rainfall intensities in a representative steep fallow land of southwestern China. Field rainfall simulations within a 60 min duration were conducted on the triplet plots (1.5 m × 1 m for a single plot) with bare soils under 30‐ and 90‐mm h−1 intensities and with cornstalk mulching (air‐dried whole plants with 60% coverage and weight 1.65 kg per plot) under 90 mm h−1 intensity, respectively. The concentration and loss of runoff DOC and its quality variables, including SUVA254 (aromaticity of DOC), C:C (proportion of colored humic substances in DOC), and E4:E6 (fulvic acid to humic acid in DOC), are determined. Results showed that runoff DOC concentration and loss were both significantly higher at 90 mm h−1 intensity than at 30 mm h−1 intensity (p < 0.05), simultaneously, they were 52.6% and 53.2% higher in mulched plots than in bare plots (p < 0.05), respectively. Runoff SUVA254 and C:C in bare plots were 90% and 88.9% higher in 30 mm h−1 intensity than in 90 mm h−1 intensity (p < 0.05), respectively. Whereas, E4:E6 of runoff was 12.3% higher in mulched plots than that in bare plots (p < 0.05). Stand biomass models can be used as basic decision-making tools in forest management planning. The Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) forest, a major forest system in tropical and subtropical regions, represents a substantial carbon sink, slowing down the rise of greenhouse gas concentrations in the earth’s atmosphere. Bamboo stand biomass models are important for the assessment of the contribution of carbon to the terrestrial ecosystem. We constructed a stand biomass model for Moso bamboo using destructively sampled data from 45 sample plots that were located across the Yixing stateowned farm in Jiangsu Province, China. Among several bamboo stand variables used as predictors in the stand biomass models, mean diameter at breast height (MDBH), mean height (MH), and canopy density (CD) of bamboo contributed significantly to the model. To increase the model’s accuracy, we introduced the effects of bamboo forest block as a random effect into the model through mixed-effects modeling. The mixed-effects model described a large part of stand biomass variation (R2 = 0.6987), significantly higher than that of the ordinary least squares regression model (R2 = 0.5748). Our results show an increased bamboo stand biomass with increasing MH and CD, confirming our model’s biological logic. The proposed stand biomass model may have important management implications; for example, it can be combined with other bamboo models to estimate bamboo canopy biomass, carbon sequestration, and bamboo biomass at different growth stages. Climate plays a significant role in shaping ecosystem-level carbon sinks. Research on the mechanisms of climate impacts on carbon sinks can contribute to the achievement of carbon neutrality. Investigating the mechanisms by which climate impact on carbon sinks in ecological spaces in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, one of the most important urban clusters in China, is of great significance. This study employed spatial autocorrelation and econometric models to explore how various climatic factors impact net primary productivity (which is used to represent carbon sink capacity) on a spatial scale. We found an increasing trend in NPP across the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomeration from 2000 to 2020, with marked spatial clustering. Climatic factors exhibited the best fit with the spatial Durbin model, except for average annual precipitation. The remaining factors had significant effects on NPP, showing spatial spillover effects. Results also showed that the average annual temperature, evaporation, and relative humidity had positive impacts on NPP at a local scale but adverse effects at a regional scale. Average annual sunshine duration and the ground temperature had negative effects on NPP locally but promoted effects regionally. Furthermore, the average annual wind speed negatively impacted both local- and regional-scale NPP. This research provides insights into how climate affects carbon sinks on a small spatial scale, offering important references for making policy decisions and improving the accuracy of carbon cycling simulations. The economic and ecological effects of three shrimp farming models commonly adopted in China, including the indoor super-intensive culture model (ISIC), the pond integrated multi-trophic aquaculture model (PIMTA), and the pond mono-culture model (PMC) were evaluated in this study. The economic and ecological effects of the three models were quantitatively estimated using a series of statistical analyses. The break-even analysis of the three models indicated that the unit output of ISIC and PMC was comparatively higher than others. Meanwhile, the variable cost of ISIC and PMC was much higher than the fixed cost, while PIMTA presented the opposite result. However, the cost-benefit study showed that PIMTA had the greatest profit margin. Regarding ecological effects, the comparison of water quality factors and pollutant emissions indicated that the PIMTA model could comparatively decrease the nitrogen and phosphorus discharge from aquaculture sewage and prevent water eutrophication. Moreover, PIMTA led to a higher bacterial diversity than ISIC. Furthermore, the analysis of the carbon sink capacity of the three cultivation modes showed that the PIMTA model had the highest carbon sink capacity of 812.21 g kg−1. When PIMTA shrimp production is 0.72 times higher than the total production of ISIC and PMC, the goal of zero CO2 emissions can be achieved. By combining ISIC high-density farming with PIMTA ecological farming, companies can effectively balance the ecological damage caused by shrimp farming by adjusting the ratio of ISIC and PIMTA while addressing the market demand for shrimp. A key focus of international climate action is achieving a terrestrial carbon sink within the framework of carbon neutrality. For certain regions with vital ecological functions and high poverty rates, the generation of surplus ecological carbon income is crucial for mitigating global inequality. While the evaluation of the economic benefits of carbon income still faces limitations in terms of inadequacy and inaccuracy, enhancing green carbon poverty alleviation schemes is urgently needed. This project introduces an analysis framework for assessing the land-based ecological carbon sink and poverty alleviation potential based on a per capita ideal carbon sink income evaluation, which compares the regional economic benefits of a carbon sink under different carbon price benchmarks and explores tailored green poverty alleviation strategies. It indicates that the per capita ideal carbon sink income in China exhibits a seasonal variation, ranging from approximately USD 16.50 to USD 261.41 per person per month on average. Its spatial distribution shows a pattern of lower values in the central region and higher values in the north and south, following a "high differentiation, low clustering" distribution pattern. The per capita carbon sink income can reach 30% to 70% of the per capita GDP, with a peak value of USD 19,138.10 per year, meeting the minimum livelihood guarantee for the needs in economically underdeveloped areas. Simultaneously, the per capita carbon sequestration income within the Chinese carbon market is expected to demonstrate a yearly ascending trajectory, with an approximate growth rate of USD 23.6 per individual annually. The southwest, northeast, and north China regions can be prioritized as key areas for carbon market development, facilitating more comprehensive inter-regional and sustainable carbon trading. The fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) is a key biophysiological parameter of terrestrial ecosystems. However, due to a lack of data with adequate spatial resolution and in long enough time series, there have been limitations in exploring the spatiotemporal changes of vegetation and response to climate change. In this study, a 1 km spatial resolution and 8-day period length dataset (FPARANN) was developed covering the years 1980 to 2018 and evaluated on spatiotemporal change consistency by validating with Gross Primary Production (GPP) observations from the Chinese Flux Observation and Research Network (ChinaFLUX), and comparison with other FPAR products. FPARANN provided a comparable performance in capturing seasonal change observed through GPP, according to the coefficient of determination (R2): 0.50, 0.51, 0.70 and 0.74 averaged for all sites, forest sites, grassland sites and cropland flux sites, respectively. The new data had more spatial similarity to the MODIS FPAR product (FPARMCD15A2) with a greater R2 (0.77) and a lower RMSE (0.12) than other products. With a newly developed dataset, combined with FPARANN (1980–2003) and FPARMCD15A2 (2004–2018), an overall increasing trend in FPAR was found for over 81% of the vegetated area of China from 1980 to 2018. FPAR increased more rapidly for over 83.7% of the area in the 2010s, and at a slower pace for over 62.1% of the area in the early 2000s, which was attributed to a decadal shifting of climate change. This study implies the new dataset is useful in quantifying vegetation changes and would be an important data source for future study of the carbon cycle, soil erosion, or evapotranspiration, with great application potential. Forestry carbon sinks are an important measure for enabling China to cope with global climate change and realize its "double carbon" goal. Carbon sink afforestation projects (CSAPs) are a type of forestry carbon sink projects, and the question of whether China's forest products with an export orientation can adapt to the requirements of high-quality development is important for balancing the relationship between emissions reduction and development. We use the micro-data of forest product export enterprises provided by the China Customs Database and construct a difference-in-difference (DID) model to investigate the impact of CSAPs on China's forest product export and its heterogeneity. The results show that CSAPs significantly increase the export scale of China's forest products. CSAPs lead to significant heterogeneity regarding the forest product export scale in relation to regions, production factor intensity, trade pattern, enterprise ownership, and export destination countries. We further find that although the implementation of CSAPs significantly reduces the export types of forest products, it significantly promotes an increase in the export price and the expansion of the export quantity of forest products, and it optimizes the export structure of forest products to some extent. The "Belt and Road" initiative (BRI) has played a significant positive role in regulating the expansion of the forest product export scale with CSAPs. The implementation of CSAPs reduces the risk of termination of trade relations among forest product export enterprises and extends the export duration. Ecosystem water-use efficiency ( W U E ) has been central in revealing the variability in terrestrial carbon and water cycles. Short-rotation plantations such as Eucalyptus plantations can simultaneously impact net primary production ( N P P ) and actual evapotranspiration ( E T a ), components of W U E , resulting in changes in terrestrial carbon and water cycles. However, there are few detailed studies on the changes in the W U E of Eucalyptus plantations at the catchment scale with high spatial remote sensing imagery. Here, we present the changes in the W U E of Eucalyptus plantations and its driving factors (i.e., N P P and E T a ) using satellite-based models combined with 5-m spatial resolution RapidEye imagery in a small county in South China. The increases in E T a of Eucalyptus plantations are primarily the result of climate warming and result in low W U E of Eucalyptus plantations. The management practice used (short rotation in this study) can enhance the effect of climate warming on W U E by varying the N P P of Eucalyptus plantations. A high value of N P P leads to a high W U E of Eucalyptus plantations at the end of a short rotation, while a low value of N P P results in a low W U E at the beginning of another short rotation. Because of the reductions in China's cultivated land area and the significant impact on the agricultural market, the main grain-producing areas (MGPA) policy has become vitally important for ensuring China's food security. However, guaranteed food security and sustainability require ecological security, which raises the question of whether food production should come at the expense of the environment. This study used 1998–2020 panel data from 30 Chinese provinces and a spatial difference-in-differences model (SDID) to explore the MGPA policy effects and mechanism paths on agricultural total factor productivity (ATFP) and the net carbon effect (NCS). It was found that economically, the MGPA policy promoted local ATFP improvements and had positive spillover effects on surrounding provinces through factor diffusion, and environmentally, the MGPA policy had a positive effect in the MGPA policy implementation areas but inhibited the NCS in surrounding provinces. Further explorations of the environmental performances revealed that the MGPA policy promoted growth in agricultural carbon sinks and agricultural carbon emissions, with the environmental performances being primarily reflected in an increase in carbon sinks and a decline in the carbon emissions density. The mechanism test showed that the MGPA policy's local environmental performance was achieved through economic performance. The ATFP was refined into technical innovation (TI), technology adoption (TA), and business scale (OS), with the mechanistic roles of these three refining paths being OS > TI > TA. A further mechanism test revealed that the MGPA policy effects on the ATFP were influenced by the various adjustment of production support, government support, and collaborative support. The magnitude and distribution of China's terrestrial carbon sink remain uncertain due to insufficient observational constraints; satellite column‐average dry‐air mole fraction carbon dioxide (XCO2) retrievals may fill some of this gap. Here, we estimate China's carbon sink using atmospheric inversions of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO‐2) XCO2 retrievals within different platforms, including the Global Carbon Assimilation System (GCAS) v2, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, and the OCO‐2 Model Inter‐comparison Project (MIP). We find that they consistently place the largest net biome production (NBP) in the south on an annual basis compared to the northeast and other main agricultural areas during peak growing season, coinciding well with the distribution of forests and crops, respectively. Moreover, the mean seasonal cycle amplitude of NBP in OCO‐2 inversions is obviously larger than that of biosphere model simulations and slightly greater than surface CO2 inversions. More importantly, the mean seasonal cycle of the OCO‐2 inversions is well constrained in the temperate, tropical, and subtropical monsoon climate zones, with better inter‐model consistency at a sub‐regional scale compared to in situ inversions and biosphere model simulations. In addition, the OCO‐2 inversions estimate the mean annual NBP in China for 2015–2019 to be between 0.34 (GCASv2) and 0.47 ± 0.16 PgC/yr (median ± std; OCO‐2 v10 MIP), and indicate the impacts of climate extremes (e.g., the 2019 drought) on the interannual variations of NBP. Our results suggest that assimilating OCO‐2 XCO2 retrievals is crucial for improving our understanding of China's terrestrial carbon sink regime. To explore the role of forest carbon sinks in achieving carbon neutrality, the cointegration regression method and scenario analysis are utilized to forecast the long-term development trend of China's forest carbon sinks up to the year 2100 and their impact on carbon neutrality. The results show that: (1) Under routine, accelerated, and strengthened ecological civilization scenarios (or RECS, AECS, and SECS, respectively), China's forests are projected to absorb 531–645 million tons of carbon by 2050 and 2.32–4.69 billion tons of carbon by 2100, respectively, and the value of the strengthened scenario will be markedly higher than that of the routine scenario. (2) Driven by slower growth in forestry investment, China's forest carbon sinks growth in all three scenarios peak by 2050 and then slow in a U-trend, with the growth rate in the SECS 0.45 percentage points higher than that of AECS, and the growth rate in the AECS 0.44 percentage points higher than that of RECS. (3) Under SECS, forest carbon sinks can help China achieve its carbon neutrality goal in 2054 (before the target date of 2060) with cumulative forestry investment of 53.3 trillion yuan and an annual investment growth rate of about 6.3%. The contemporary carbon balance over the Tibetan Plateau is highly uncertain with a ten-fold difference between various estimates. In a warming world, the potential exists for a large carbon release from its permafrost which could compromise China's 2060 carbon-neutral goal. Here, we used a satellite- and inventory-based approach, ecosystem models, and atmospheric inversions to estimate that the carbon sink was 33.12–37.84 TgC yr−1 during 2000–2015. The carbon sink induced by climate change and increasing CO2 levels largely overcompensated for a livestock grazing-induced carbon source of 0.38 TgC yr−1. By 2060, the carbon sink is projected to increase by 38.3–74.5% under moderate to high emissions scenarios, with the enhanced vegetation carbon uptake outweighing the warming-induced permafrost carbon release. The restoration of degraded grassland could sequestrate an additional 9.06 TgC yr−1, leading to a total carbon sink of 57.78–70.52 TgC yr−1. We conclude that the Tibetan Plateau's ecosystems absorbed two-and-a-half times the amount of its cumulative fossil CO2 emissions during 2000–2015 and that their carbon sinks will almost double in strength in the future, helping to achieve China's pledge to become carbon neutral by 2060. Identifying the main climatic controls of productivity differences in different forest ecosystems is beneficial for revealing the patterns of carbon cycle changes in terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, exploring the differences in their productivity responses to temperature and precipitation at interannual and inter-monthly scales is conducive to identifying the mechanisms of carbon cycle changes in forest ecosystems, which can enhance the study of the forest ecosystem carbon cycle. In addition, the effect of climate factor changes on the net primary productivity (NPP) of typical forest types in subtropical areas remains unclear. Here, we simulated the dynamic changes in the NPP of four typical forest types (evergreen needleleaf forest (ENF), evergreen broadleaf forest (EBF), bamboo forest (BF), and evergreen needleleaf–broadleaf mixed forest (ENBMF)) in the Poyang Lake Basin from 1970 to 2021 using the Biome-BGC model where its parameters were adjusted according to the ecophysiological characteristics of forest types in this study. Then, the correlation between the NPP of the four typical forest types and climate factors was examined at interannual and inter-monthly scales; the response of the NPP of four typical forest types to future temperature and precipitation changes was explored. The results revealed that NPP showed a fluctuating downward trend after 2000 in ENF, EBF, and ENBMF. The NPP of the ENF was primarily driven by precipitation at the interannual and inter-monthly levels (p < 0.01). The impact of precipitation and accumulated temperature (AT) on NPP of EBF is not significant interannually; the NPP of BF demonstrated a minor correlation with AT and no significant correlation with precipitation. However, the NPP variation of EBF and BF was significantly affected by the temperature at the inter-monthly scale (p < 0.01), with R2 of 0.85 and 0.92, respectively. At the interannual scale, the NPP of ENBMF was mainly driven by precipitation (p < 0.01); at the inter-monthly scale, it was driven by precipitation (p < 0.01) and AT (p < 0.01), with R2 of 0.74 and 0.62, respectively. Under designed climate scenarios, the precipitation changes will have a greater impact on NPP of ENF; the NPP changes in the EBF, BF, and ENBMF will be mainly controlled by temperature increase, and only a 10% change in precipitation leads to its smaller impact on their NPP changes. The climate and ecological problems caused by excessive carbon dioxide emissions are attracting more and more attention, and the need for carbon reduction has reached a consensus. Carbon peak and carbon neutrality is a solemn commitment made by China to the world and a strategic arrangement to achieve economic and social transformation. This study focused on Shanxi Province, a base of power source and heavy chemical industry in China. Based on energy consumption data, carbon emission data set at the county level, land use data and socioeconomic data, we built a carbon ecological pressure index in order to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of the carbon footprint, carbon carrying capacity and carbon ecological security status of each county in Shanxi Province from 2000 to 2020. The results showed that: (1) the total carbon footprint of Shanxi Province increased, and the number of high carbon emission counties showed an increasing trend. The largest part of carbon footprint was coal. (2) The vegetation carbon-carrying capacity showed an increasing trend in general, and forest land was the main contributor to the carbon-carrying capacity. (3) The carbon deficit of Shanxi Province was greater than 0 and behaved as a carbon source. The carbon ecological security decreased from a relatively safe level to a general safe level. (4) The carbon ecological pressure index gradually increased. It was predicted that the carbon ecological security level of each county will remain basically unchanged by 2025 and some will still be at a carbon ecological insecurity level. In general, the carbon ecological pressure index of some counties was still large. It is necessary to strengthen the use of clean energy, optimize the industrial structure and increase the carbon sink of forest land in order to reduce carbon emissions and increase the carbon sink, so as to ensure carbon ecological security and realize the goal of a low-carbon economy. Wetland vegetation aboveground biomass (AGB) directly indicates wetland ecosystem health and is critical for water purification, carbon cycle, and biodiversity conservation. Accurate AGB estimation is essential for the monitoring and supervision of ecosystems, especially in seasonal floodplain wetlands. This paper explored the capability of spectral and texture features from the Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) for modeling grassland AGB using random forest (RF) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithms in Shengjin Lake wetland (a Ramsar site). We use five-fold cross-validation to verify the model effectiveness. The results indicated that the RF and XGBoost models had a robust and efficient performance (with root mean square error (RMSE) of 126.571 g·m−2 and R2 of 0.844 for RF, RMSE of 112.425 g·m−2 and R2 of 0.869 for XGBoost), and the XGBoost models, by contrast, performed better. Both traditional and red-edge vegetation indices (VIs) obtained satisfactory results of AGB estimation (RMSE = 127.936 g·m−2, RMSE = 125.879 g·m−2 in XGBoost models, respectively), with the red-edge VIs contributed more to the AGB models. Moreover, we selected eight gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) textures calculated by four processing window sizes using the mean value of four offsets, and further analyzed the results of three analysis sets. Textures derived from traditional and red-edge bands using a 7 × 7 window size performed better in biomass estimation. This finding suggested that textures derived from the traditional bands were as important as the red-edge bands. The introduction of textures moderately improved the accuracy of modeling AGB, whereas the use of textures alo ne was not satisfactory. This research demonstrated that using the Sentinel-2 MSI and the two ensemble algorithms is an effective method for long-term dynamic monitoring and assessment of grass AGB in seasonal floodplain wetlands, which can support sustainable management and carbon accounting of wetland ecosystems. Coastal embayments play a vital role in the global carbon cycle either as sources of organic matter to open sea or as carbon sinks due to the accumulation of organic matter in sediments. This paper describes a study of Luoyuan Bay, a typical semi-enclosed embayment with a total area of approximately 227 km 2 in a strong tidal environment. The analysed results indicate that the particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration in suspended particulate matter (SPM) varies from 0.57 mg/L to 1.33 mg/L at the bottom layer (0.5 MAB, meters above bed) and from 0.54 mg/L to 1.25 mg/L at the surface layer (0.5 MBS, meters below surface). The δ 13 C‰ ranges from −25.52‰ to −23.54‰ and exhibits different variations at the surface and bottom layers in spring and neap tides. The POC content in deposited particulate matter (DPM) varies from 0.62% to 2.95%, increasing from spring to neap tide, and the δ 13 C and C/N molar ratio are −25.29‰ ∼ −21.41‰ and 4.18–8.53, respectively. The settling fluxes of POC obtained by sediment trap decrease from 2.25 g/m 2 ·tide during the spring tide to 0.55 g/m 2 ·tide during the neap tide with a mean value of 1.41 g/m 2 ·tide during the observation, whereas the settling flux of SPM decreases from 456.76 g/m 2 ·tide during the spring tide to 37.12 g/m 2 ·tide during the neap tide. Combining the δ 13 C and C/N molar ratio, three end-members are recognized, i.e., freshwater algae and phytoplankton, marine algae and phytoplankton, and kelp-derived detritus. The mean contribution to POC from these three sources is 57.2%, 31.8% and 11.0% in SPM, and 39.9%, 35.0% and 25.1% in DPM, respectively. It is estimated that there will be 85,000 tons of End-of-Life (EoL) wind turbine blades in China by 2050. How to disposing discarded blades has become a significant problem restricting the development of wind power industry in China. To this end, a life cycle assessment (LCA) is performed to measure the carbon reduction (CR) potential of four disposal scenarios of EoL LM 37.3 P2 blades. The contribution of each scenario to reduce the carbon emission intensity of a specific wind farm is further evaluated. At the same time, the critical transportation distance to maintain the CR potential of each scenario is estimated. The results show that: firstly, the disposal scenarios with the greatest and smallest CR potential are producing concrete by EoL blades instead of cements and producing concrete by EoL blades instead of aggregates, respectively. The former one is determined as the baseline scenario, which can reduce 4516 kg CO2-eq carbon emissions per functional unit. Secondly, the critical transportation distances for incineration for electricity, co-processing and producing concrete by EoL blades instead of cements are 895 km, 3309 km and 9716 km. Finally, a reasonable recycling strategy can reduce the life-cycle carbon emission intensity of Datang Zhaluteqi 49.5 MW Wind Farm from 12.51 g CO2-eq/kWh to 9.22 g CO2-eq/kWh. This study not only quantifies the CR potential of different scenarios, but also offers important implications to promote blade disposal technology and improve the wind turbine blade recycling management. The rural landscape is undergoing rapid changes. In China, the expansion of rural settlements is widespread, causing problems to the environment. Previous studies have focused on the effects of built-up land expansion on ecosystem carbon, and this paper further explores the effects of rural settlement changes on ecosystem carbon and investigates the spatial heterogeneity of the relationship. The result shows: rural settlement expansion has led to a significant loss in carbon sinks and vegetation carbon stock, respectively. The main pathway of ecosystem carbon loss is the occupation of cropland. A total of 31% of the regions have a negative coupling relationship between the area of per capita rural settlement and the growth of carbon sinks. The regions where both rural settlements and carbon sink function have declined are mainly concentrated in the northwest, and ecological and rural development in these regions requires additional attention. 63% of the regions show great resilience in terms of carbon sink function in the face of rural settlement expansion. • Terrestrial carbon variations are analyzed from the aspect of the seldom-mentioned rural settlement. • The corrected population data were included in the coupling analysis. • Rural settlement is still expanding in China together with fast urbanization. • Most regions show a negative correlation between carbon sink and rural settlement expansion. To clarify the buffering process and karst carbon sink effect of the karst soil with acid rain, experiments on the leaching of sulfuric acid rain were conducted at pH 3.5, 4.5, and 6.5 with different karst soil thicknesses. The buffering process of karst soil on acid rain occurred in the topsoil. During strong acid precipitation, the soil-exchangeable calcium and magnesium were predominantly exchanged with H+ in acid rain, while during weak acid precipitation, the amount of calcium and magnesium exchanged with H+ in acid rain was lower than the H+ generated via dissociation of soil CO2 dissolved in the precipitation. At pH 3.5, 4.5, and 6.5 precipitations, the δ13CDIC value in the leached liquid ranges from − 18.9 to − 14.2‰, − 19.0 to − 13.2‰, and − 12.0 to − 7.1‰, respectively, and with increasing precipitation intensity, the δ13CDIC value was increased, relatively stable, and decreased, respectively. A total of 74% of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the leached liquid was from soil CO2. In the karst soil area (soil thickness ≥ 10 cm), soil-exchangeable calcium and magnesium can buffer 33,303–336,987 mm in pH 3.5 precipitation and 145,701–371,550 mm in pH 4.5 precipitation, while the soil buffer in pH 3.5 precipitation can generate 0.22–1.04 mol m−2 carbon sink per year, and 0.39–0.64 mol m−2 carbon sink per year in pH 4.5 precipitation. Background: Peatlands contain about 500 Pg of carbon worldwide and play a dual role as both a carbon sink and an important methane (CH4) source, thereby potentially influencing climate change. However, systematic studies on peat properties, microorganisms, methanogenesis, and their interrelations in peatlands remain limited, especially in China. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the physicochemical properties, archaeal community, and predominant methanogenesis pathways in three typical peatlands in China, namely Hani (H), Taishanmiao (T), and Ruokeba (R) peatlands, and quantitively determine their CH4 production potentials. Results: These peatlands exhibited high water content (WC) and total carbon content (TC), as well as low pH values. In addition, R exhibited a lower dissolved organic carbon concentration (DOC), as well as higher total iron content (TFe) and pH values compared to those observed in T. There were also clear differences in the archaeal community between the three peatlands, especially in the deep peat layers. The average relative abundance of the total methanogens ranged from 10 to 12%, of which Methanosarcinales and Methanomicrobiales were the most abundant in peat samples (8%). In contrast, Methanobacteriales were mainly distributed in the upper peat layer (0–40 cm). Besides methanogens, Marine Benthic Group D/Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Euryarchaeotic Group 1 (MBG–D/DHVEG–1), Nitrosotaleales, and several other orders of Bathyarchaeota also exhibited high relative abundances, especially in T. This finding might be due to the unique geological conditions, suggesting high archaeal diversity in peatlands. In addition, the highest and lowest CH4 production potentials were 2.38 and 0.22 μg g−1 d−1 in H and R, respectively. The distributions of the dominant methanogens were consistent with the respective methanogenesis pathways in the three peatlands. The pH, DOC, and WC were strongly correlated with CH4 production potentials. However, no relationship was found between CH4 production potential and methanogens, suggesting that CH4 production in peatlands may not be controlled by the relative abundance of methanogens. Conclusions: The results of the present study provide further insights into CH4 production in peatlands in China, highlighting the importance of the archaeal community and peat physicochemical properties for studies on methanogenesis in distinct types of peatlands. Under the threat of global climate change, China has proposed a dual carbon goal of peak carbon and carbon neutrality. As the vital carrier for territorial spatial planning, production–living–ecological (PLE) spaces drive carbon emissions and are important to the dual carbon goals. In this study, carbon emissions and sinks of PLE spaces in cities in Heilongjiang Province from 2005 to 2020 were calculated and spatial–temporal changes were analyzed. The carbon emission structure was analyzed in segmentation sectors. The land use changes and socioeconomic factors on carbon emissions were analyzed, and emission reduction strategies were implemented. The results show the following: (1) Carbon emissions from production and living spaces increased yearly. Carbon sinks were smaller than emissions, but capacity was stable. (2) Higher-emission cities were concentrated in southwest Heilongjiang, and carbon emission differences between regions gradually increased. (3) Among carbon emission sectors, agricultural and household made up smaller proportions, while animal husbandry, industrial, transportation, and traffic travel contributed most. Carbon emission structures were transformed by adjusting urban development and industrial structure. (4) For most cities, industrial space was the main emission space, but agricultural production and urban–rural living spaces dominated in some cities. (5) GDP, urbanization rate, and area of city paved roads suppressed emissions in cities with decreased carbon emission grades. The net primary productivity (NPP) of vegetation holds a pivotal character for the global carbon balance as a key parameter for characterizing terrestrial ecological processes. The most commonly used indices for estimating vegetation NPP, for instance, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), often suffer from saturation issues that can compromise the accuracy of NPP estimation. This research utilizes a new vegetation index based on the radial basis function (RBF) to estimate vegetation NPP in Chinese terrestrial ecosystems over the past two decades (2001–2020) and investigates the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of NPP and the driving mechanisms. The results indicate that the kernel vegetation index (kNDVI) can effectively alleviate the saturation problem and significantly improve the accuracy of NPP estimation compared to NDVI. Over the past two decades, the NPP of Chinese terrestrial vegetation ranged from 64.13 to 79.72 g C/m2, with a mean value of 72.75 g C/m2, showing a fluctuating upward trend. Changes in the NPP of terrestrial ecosystems in China are mainly affected by precipitation. The dominant factors influencing NPP changes varied over time and had different impacts. For instance, in the period of 2001–2005 the climate had a positive effect on NPP changes, with the dominant factors being evaporation and precipitation. However, in the period of 2010–2015 the dominant climate factors shifted to evaporation and temperature, and their effect on NPP changes became negative. Carbon storage plays an important role in the global carbon cycle and climate change mitigation. Understanding the relationship between land use change and carbon storage can significantly contribute to carbon neutrality and sustainable development. However, most previous studies only analyze the carbon storage change due to land use change, while few studies quantitatively evaluate the contributions of various land use transitions (LUTs) to carbon storage change, which cannot provide enough information for land use management. In the context of rapid urbanization and ecological conservation, the Poyang Lake basin (PYLB) has experienced dramatic land use change, which has significantly affected local carbon storage. Therefore, this study used the InVEST model to evaluate carbon storage in the PYLB from 1990 to 2020. Then, the Geo-information Tupu method was used to quantify the contributions of various LUTs to carbon storage change and identify the key LUTs. The results showed that carbon storage in PYLB decreased by 17.26 Tg from 1990 to 2020. The carbon gain was mainly attributed to transitions from 'farmland to forestland' (36.87%), 'grassland to forestland' (22.58%), and 'farmland to water' (15.89%). In contrast, the transitions from 'farmland to built-up land', 'forestland to built-up land', and 'forestland to grassland' contributed 39.94%, 28.06%, and 13.25% to carbon loss, respectively. Massive carbon loss caused by built-up land expansion should attract attention. Forestation is regarded as an effective strategy for increasing terrestrial carbon sequestration. However, its carbon sink potential remains uncertain due to the scarcity of large-scale sampling data and limited knowledge of the linkage between plant and soil C dynamics. Here, we conduct a large-scale survey of 163 control plots and 614 forested plots involving 25304 trees and 11700 soil samples in northern China to fill this knowledge gap. We find that forestation in northern China contributes a significant carbon sink (913.19 ± 47.58 Tg C), 74% of which is stored in biomass and 26% in soil organic carbon. Further analysis reveals that the biomass carbon sink increases initially but then decreases as soil nitrogen increases, while soil organic carbon significantly decreases in nitrogen-rich soils. These results highlight the importance of incorporating plant and soil interactions, modulated by nitrogen supply in the calculation and modelling of current and future carbon sink potential. Linkage between plant and soil carbon dynamics after forestation remains uncertain and controversial. Ordos City is an important energy supply city for Chinese provinces and cities, providing a secure energy supply for China while also generating corresponding environmental pollution. Examining the spatiotemporal patterns of net primary productivity (NPP) in Ordos City and its driving factors is relevant to the realization of the carbon emission policy in Inner Mongolia. This study was undertaken to analyze NPP and its driving factors in Ordos City from 2000 to 2019 using NPP data, CO2 spatial grid data, meteorological data and statistical yearbook data accordingly. The NPP in Ordos City increased significantly from 2000 to 2019, mainly showing low values of NPP in the northwest and high values in the southeast. The usable grassland area and annual mean precipitation had a significant positive correlation with NPP, whereas the other factors had a more significant negative correlation. The usable grassland area had the largest influence on NPP, and fixed asset investment had the smallest influence on NPP. The total NPP–anthropogenic factor regression model and the mean NPP–natural factor regression model constructed allow for the prediction of NPP. Anthropogenic carbon emissions, population growth and usable grassland area were the main causes of NPP changes. Due to their low viscosity, high mobility, and high element contents, supercritical fluids are important agents in the cycling of elements. However, the chemical composition of supercritical fluids in natural rocks is poorly understood. Here, we investigate well-preserved primary multiphase fluid inclusions (MFIs) from an ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic vein of the Bixiling eclogite in Dabieshan, China, thus providing direct evidence for the components of supercritical fluid occurring in a natural system. Via the 3D modeling of MFIs by Raman scanning, we quantitatively determined the major composition of the fluid trapped in the MFIs. Combined with the peak-metamorphic pressure–temperature conditions and the cooccurrence of coesite, rutile, and garnet, we suggest that the trapped fluids in the MFIs represent supercritical fluids in a deep subduction zone. The arid terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle is one of the most important parts of the global carbon cycle, but it is vulnerable to external disturbances. As the most direct factor affecting the carbon cycle, how land cover change affects vegetation carbon sources/sinks in arid terrestrial ecosystems remains unclear. In this study, we chose the arid region of northwest China (ARNWC) as the study area and used net ecosystem productivity (NEP) as an indicator of vegetation carbon source/sink. Subsequently, we described the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of vegetation carbon sources/sinks in the ARNWC from 2001–2018 by combining the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA) and a soil microbial heterotrophic respiration (RH) model and assessed the effects of land cover change on them through modeling scenario design. We found that land cover change had an obvious positive impact on vegetation carbon sinks. Among them, the effect of land cover type conversion contributed to an increase in total NEP of approximately 1.77 Tg C (reaching 15.55% of the original value), and after simultaneously considering the effect of vegetation growth enhancement, it contributed to an increase in total NEP of approximately 14.75 Tg C (reaching 129.61% of the original value). For different land cover types, cropland consistently contributed the most to the increment of NEP, and the regeneration of young and middle-aged forests also led to a significant increase in forest carbon sinks. Thus, our findings provide a reference for assessing the effects of land cover change on vegetation carbon sinks, and they indicated that cropland expansion and anthropogenic management dominated the growth of vegetation carbon sequestration in the ARNWC, that afforestation also benefits the carbon sink capacity of terrestrial ecosystems, and that attention should be paid to restoring and protecting native vegetation in forestland and grassland regions in the future. The destruction of vegetation structure and quantity leads to the weakening of the carbon sequestration capacity of the ecosystem. Building an ecological spatial network is a potent method for studying vegetation spatial distribution structures. The relationship between the spatial distribution structure of vegetation networks and carbon sequestration, as approached from the perspective of complex network theory, is understudied. This study uses the minimum resistance model (MCR) and morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) to study the eco-space network and ecological node spatial structure and topological characteristics of vegetation in the ecologically sensitive area of the middle reaches of the Yellow River (ESAMRYR). Based on the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford approach (CASA) model, the vegetation Net Primary Productivity (NPP) of the study area is calculated, and the ecological carbon sequestration function of the ecological node is estimated, and the relationship between the ecological node and the topological indicators is analyzed. The study shows that the forest land carbon storage in the regions situated toward the south and east of the Yellow River ecologically sensitive area is the highest, accounting for twice the proportion of the area, and is very important in terms of increasing carbon storage. Most of the ecological sources in the study area have a higher topological importance than functional importance, and the sources with low coordination are mainly distributed in the southwest and northeast. We construct a topology and function coupling optimization model (TFCO) to explore the coordination between vegetation structure and carbon sequestration function, to determine the network optimization direction, and to propose optimization solutions. Analysis of network robustness and carbon sequestration capacity shows that the sturdiness and carbon sequestration of the enhanced network are significantly improved. Global change, encompassing rising temperatures and an increase in extreme precipitation events, has influenced vegetation photosynthesis; this can be seen in the gross primary productivity (GPP) of terrestrial ecosystems, which, over time affects the global carbon cycle. The impact of climate on interannual variability in GPP (GPPIAV) has been extensively explored in the literature. Other changing factors driven by global change, such as biodiversity and soil nutrient availability, are vital in predicting the future of the biosphere. However, the roles of these factors remain unclear.We combined (i) data from 454 community plots collected using standard protocols from 2013 to 2019 across China, (ii) plant trait data and phylogenetic information of more than 2500 plant species, and (iii) soil nutrient data that we measured. Using these data from 72 "real‐world" ecosystems located across a range of environmental conditions and species pools, we investigated the role of environmental factors including temperature, precipitation and soil nutrients and multifaceted diversity (i.e. species richness, hypervolume‐based functional diversity, and phylogenetic diversity) in mediating the magnitude of GPPIAV using multi‐model averaging and structural equation modelling.We found that soil nutrients and functional diversity are the main determinants of the magnitude of GPPIAV and that climate effects are predominantly mediated by multifaceted diversity.Synthesis. We provide strong evidence that ecosystems with higher biodiversity have less variable annual biomass production and decrease the extent of GPPIAV through compensatory effects across diverse ecosystems. Nutrient‐rich ecosystems are likely to buffer the impact of climate variability on ecosystem carbon uptake better than nutrient‐poor ecosystems. Soil organic carbon (SOC) strongly contributes to the operation of the global carbon cycling, and topographical factors largely influence its spatial distribution. However, SOC distribution and its leading topographical impact factors in subtropical forest ecosystems (e.g., the Zhejiang Province in China) have received relatively limited attention from researchers. In this study, 255 forest soil samples were collected from the Zhejiang Province to quantify the spatial variation in SOC and impact factors in subtropical forests. The SOC contents over soil profiles were 35.95 ± 22.58 g/kg, 20.98 ± 15.26 g/kg, and 13.77 ± 11.28 g/kg at depths of 0–10 cm, 10–30 cm, and 30–60 cm, respectively. The coefficient variations at different depths were 62.81% (0–10 cm), 72.74% (10–30 cm), and 81.92% (30–60 cm), respectively. SOC content shows a moderate intensity variation in the Zhejiang Province. The nugget coefficients of the SOC content for the three depths were 0.809 (0–10 cm), 0.846 (10–30 cm), and 0.977 (30–60 cm), respectively. Structural factors mainly influence SOC content. SOC content is positively correlated with elevation and slope, and negatively correlated with slope position (p < 0.05). However, the SOC content was negatively correlated with slope in mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest. The distribution of the SOC content was relatively balanced between different slope positions. However, the differences became obvious when forest types were distinguished. Topographical factors affected the SOC content differently: elevation > slope > slope position. Slope becomes the main influencing factor in 30–60 cm soil. Forest type significantly influenced the SOC content but with a low statistical explanation compared to topographical factors. Topography has different effects on SOC of different forest types in subtropical forests. This reminds us that in future research, we should consider the combination of topography and forest types. Forest aboveground biomass (AGB) plays an important role in regulating the global carbon cycle and is thus an essential component of ecosystem functioning. In the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF), studies have shown that many biotic factors (e.g., species, functional traits, and large trees) and abiotic factors have significant impacts on AGB. However, the relative strength of these affecting factors remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed woody plants (diameter at breast height [DBH] ≥ 1 cm) within a 1.6 ha plot in an old-growth subtropical natural forest in southern China. We used structural equation models to test the effects of tree diversity (species, phylogenetic, functional, and size inequality), functional composition, large trees, and environmental factors (topography, soil nutrients, and understory light) on AGB. Our results indicated that size inequality, the community-weighted mean of maximum DBH (CWM_MDBH), and large trees had significant, positive effects on AGB (p < 0.001), while lower soil phosphorus content was found to promote an increase in AGB. Furthermore, large trees, which were mostly composed of dominant tree species, were the main driver of AGB, and the effect of functional composition (e.g., CWM_MDBH) on AGB was substantially reduced by large trees. We argue that the selection effect plays a key role in regulating BEF relationships in subtropical natural forests and conclude that retaining large-diameter trees and dominant species, along with sustaining a complex stand structure, are key measures for improving productivity.
