Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) emissions to atmosphere have increased dramatically in China since 1980s, and this increase has aroused great concerns on its ecological impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. Previous studies have showed that terrestrial ecosystems in China are acting as a large carbon (C) sink, but its potential in the future remains largely uncertain. So far little work on the impacts of the N deposition on C sequestration in China’s terrestrial ecosystems has been assessed at a national scale. Aiming to assess and predict how ecological processes especially the C cycling respond to the increasing N deposition in China’s forests, recently researchers from Peking University and their partners have established a manipulation experimental network on the ecological effects of the N deposition: Nutrient Enrichment Experiments in China’s Forests Project (NEECF). The NEECF comprises 10 experiments at 7 sites located from north to south China, covering major zonal forest vegetation in eastern China from boreal forest in Greater Khingan Mountains to tropical forests in Hainan Island. Forests are important for the global carbon cycle, hydrothermal balance, and climate change. Human activities can exert a significant impact on forest ecosystems, thereby having the potential to alter their physical and chemical properties and thus affecting carbon, water, and heat budgets, and climate change. The historical reconstruction of the disturbance of global forests can help us understand the processes and patterns of human activities and global change. In this paper, we construct a deforestation prediction model using a Spearman correlation coefficient and implement the XGBoost method, using Python 3.6, for the reconstruction of deforestation intensity data from 2000 to 2019. Secondly, the selection of the driver indicators is done by using extreme difference regularization to unify the magnitude, and the potential deforestation area risk index is calculated in the form of equal weights. Finally, the actual deforestation data were used for optimization and validation. The model shows that the deforestation hotspots are mainly concentrated in the southern and southeastern regions of China and that there are large differences in deforestation in different provinces. In the future, the fine spatial and temporal patterns of deforestation in China during the historical period can be quantitatively reconstructed, which can provide some reference information for forest disaster prevention and forest management in China. In response to climate change, carbon emission reduction has become an important goal worldwide. Forests are the largest carbon pool in terrestrial ecosystems with a high carbon density and a fast carbon accumulation rate, and play a key role in the global carbon cycle. In this paper, the dynamic change and influence factors of forest carbon sequestration efficiency was analysis using the Data Envelopment Analysis Malmquist method in province level of China. The results showed that Heilongjiang, Yunnan, Tibet, Sichuan, and Inner Mongolia had the highest carbon sequestration, while northern China, eastern China, and southwestern China had the highest carbon sequestration efficiency. Furthermore, the factors of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, urbanization, and the length of the highway network had significant positive impacts on the carbon sequestration efficiencies, while the total imports and exports had a significant negative impact. Ecological afforestation, temperature, GDP per capita, urbanization, population, and total imports and exports had spillover effects. It is recommended that the northeastern, central-southern, and southwestern regions with high carbon sequestration efficiencies should be used as the main areas to enhance carbon sinks in the future, and the areas with low efficiencies should respect the laws of nature more. Provinces should take into account the characteristics of the science and technology needs of forest areas and should provide forestry technology extension services. Abstract: The Continental Scientific Drilling Project at the Cretaceous-age Songliao Basin is a drilling initiative under the framework of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program, to recover a nearly complete Cretaceous terrestrial sedimentary record in the Songliao Basin, northeastern China. The recovered cores will provide unique opportunities for the geosciences community to advance the understanding of climate change in the Cretaceous greenhouse world, and provide a documentation of geological events relevant to the carbon cycle during this time period. This drilling project will address significant geological questions, such as the identification of important stratigraphic boundaries and the marine-terrestrial correlations of stratigraphy, the reasons for the biotic response to the terrestrial environmental changes, the terrestrial response to the Cretaceous oceanic anoxic events, the formation of terrestrial petroleum source rocks, and the mechanisms for the Cretaceous magnetic Normal Superchron (CNS). In the first stage of this drilling project, the SKI drilling, rock cores of 2485.89m in total length were recovered and the recovery ratio reached 96.46%. A series of drilling and coring technologies including regular, confined, directional, and sealed coring, were utilized to ensure a higher recovery ratio for the core, and will be described at the end of this paper. Well loggings were conducted right after coring. Core handling and storage were arranged in such a way that the scientific research was conducted on half of each core, whereas the other half of each core was preserved for long-term storage. The upcoming second stage, the SKII drilling, will combine with data from the existing SKI to provide complete high-resolution climate records of the terrestrial environment for the whole Cretaceous time period. Abstract: Urban land development substantially alters the terrestrial carbon cycle, particularly the net primary productivity (NPP), from local to global scales. However, limited attempts have been undertaken to elucidate the differences in NPP between pre- and post-urban land development in China. In this paper, the terrestrial NPP after urbanization in China was assessed by using the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford approach (CASA), toward which a calibration was conducted for adapting this model on the fine-scale application. In addition, a method of neighborhood proxy was applied to acquire the NPP in the absence of urban land development, assuming that non-urban lands can represent their nearby urban lands before they were transformed. Our analyses indicate that urban land development had overall negative effects on terrestrial NPP. They reduced the NPP at an accelerating rate of 0.31×10−3 PgCyear−1, approximately 5.88% of the annual reduction during the period of 2000–2006 in China. Furthermore, these effects of NPP variations exhibited obvious differences in the amounts and spatial distributions. However, the NPP showed a slight increase around some regions that experienced rapid urbanization, as well as the arid regions in northwest China. These were probably caused by the effects of Urban Heat Island (UHI) and Urban Rain Island (URI), an introduction of faster growing exotics, various resource augmentations and so on. Frequency and severity of droughts were projected to increase in many regions. However, their effects of temporal dynamics on the terrestrial carbon cycle remain uncertain, and hence deserve further investigation. In this paper, the droughts that occurred in China during 2001–2010 were identified by using the standardized precipitation index (SPI). Standardized anomaly index (SAI), which has been widely employed in reflecting precipitation, was extended to evaluate the anomalies of net primary productivity (NPP). In addition, influences of the droughts on vegetation were explored by examining the temporal dynamics of SAI–NPP along with area-weighted drought intensity at different time scales (1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months). Year-to-year variability of NPP with several factors, including droughts, NDVI, radiation and temperature, was analyzed as well. Consequently, the droughts in the years 2001, 2006 and 2009 were well reconstructed. This indicates that SPI could be applied to the monitoring of the droughts in China during the past decade (2001–2010) effectively. Moreover, strongest correlations between droughts and NPP anomalies were found during or after the drought intensities reached their peak values. In addition, some droughts substantially reduced the countrywide NPP, whereas the others did not. These phenomena can be explained by the regional diversities of drought intensity, drought duration, areal extents of the droughts, as well as the cumulative and lag responses of vegetation to the precipitation deficits. The carbon cycle in a global sense is the biogeochemical process by which carbon is exchanged among the biosphere, pedosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere of the earth. For epikarst systems, it is the exchange of carbon among the atmosphere, water, and carbonate rocks. Southern China is located in the subtropical zone; its warm and humid weather creates favorable conditions for the dynamic physical, chemical, and ecological processes of the carbon cycle. This paper presents the mechanisms and characteristics of the carbon cycle in the epikarst systems in south China. The CO concentration in soils has clear seasonal variations, and its peak correlates well with the warm and rainy months. Stable carbon isotope analysis shows that a majority of the carbon in this cycle is from soils. The flow rate and flow velocity in an epikarst system and the composition of carbonate rocks control the carbon fluxes. It was estimated that the karst areas in south China contribute to about half of the total carbon sink by the carbonate system in China. By enhancing the movement of elements and dissolution of more chemical components, the active carbon cycle in the epikarst system helps to expand plant species. It also creates favorable environments for the calciphilic plants and biomass accumulation in the region. The findings from this study should help in better understanding of the carbon cycle in karst systems in south China, an essential component for the best management practices in combating rock desertification and in the ongoing study of the total carbon sink by the karst flow systems in China. High-precision (±0.1 ppm) and high-frequency (hourly averaged) in situ measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO) were made for the first time from August 2005 to July 2007 at Yanbian, China using a non-dispersive Infrared (NDIR) analyzer with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Earth System Research Laboratory (NOAA/ESRL) standards. The results of these measurements are presented in this paper and are used to investigate the regional representativeness of regional background data at Yanbian and determine the CO emission source regions in Northeast Asia. The phase of the monthly variations at Yanbian reflects the special regional characteristics, which were overall in excellent agreement with other observatories in the middle-to-high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. Applying a hybrid receptor model to the regional emission source events in cold period (November-April), we estimated the distribution of the major CO emissions in the northeast Asia. The results indicated that the strongest potential emission areas contributing to Yanbian are the Beijing & Tianjin metropolitan areas, southwestern part of Shandong Province including Jinan, and Vladivostok. The results of this study reveal the usefulness of in situ CO measurements at Yanbian in establishing the scientific foundation for monitoring the large CO emission areas in northern China and Russia. Continued monitoring of CO at Yanbian within a regional network should provide significant contributions to both understanding the global/regional carbon cycle and constraining 'top-down' emissions in Northeast Asia. Abstract: Subsurface hydrology plays an important role in governing the behaviour of salt marshes, in particular, nutrient exchange, plant zonation and carbon cycling. The objective of this paper is to examine the hydrological characteristics of a salt marsh based on a field investigation conducted at a cross-creek section in the Chongming Dongtan wetland (Shanghai, China). Field measurements showed complex groundwater table fluctuations, controlled by multiple factors. The groundwater table near the creek responded quickly to the creek water level fluctuation, in contrast with the weak water table response in the marsh interior. The average elevation of the groundwater table near the creek was lower than that in the interior, suggesting that the optimal soil aeration condition occurred near the creek. The variations of pore water salinity along the cross-creek transect also appeared to be complex even though a low salinity zone remained present near the creek levee over the investigation period. Relatively strong pore water circulation near the creek prevented local solute accumulation. These results are essentially consistent with the hypothesis that the area near the creek is better suited for plant growth. In the marsh interior, weakened drainage and flushing effects may leave the soil largely saturated for a long period and suppress carbon exchange between the marsh soil and ambient environments (coastal water and atmosphere). Abstract: With the deepening research of global change, studies of carbon cycle of grassland ecosystem, one of the widely distributed vegetation type, is of great significance in estimating global carbon cycle. Grassland degradation and desertification caused by human activities(such as land reclamation and grazing etc) is becoming increasingly serious in our country, so it is urgency to study the effects of human on grassland soil carbon. Under the condition of increasing measuring precision and region density, it is superior to use remote sensing in grassland carbon storage measurement through acquisition and inversion vegetation information and related biophysics parameters, it is possible to monitor the space distribution of grassland carbon-fixed amount in large range and multi-scale timely and accurately. In this paper, the importance of carbon cycle of grassland ecosystem was discussed, and researches on carbon cycle of grassland ecosystem in China was summarized and analysed, including the three carbon pools(plants carbon pool, litterfall carbon pool and soil carbon pool), effects of natural or human activities on carbon storage and methods to estimate the carbon storage. Additionally, based on the principal of grass growth, together with analysis of various global ecosystem NPP estimation methods, we put forward a novel thought to establish an carbon estimation model and testify its accuracy with meteorological data and field observation data such as grassland biomass, NPP, net ecological productivity (NEP) etc, which is much more suitable for carbon source/sink estimation of grassland ecosystem in China. Summary: Wetlands are important dissolved organic carbon (DOC) reservoirs, and principal sources of DOC to the fluvial environment, constituting a significant linkage between land and ocean in the context of global carbon cycle. The Sanjiang Plain, a floodplain in Northeastern China that encompasses numerous natural freshwater wetlands, has been experiencing extensive building of drainage ditches and thus elevated degradation of wetlands. This paper investigated DOC, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and dissolved total carbon (DTC) in soil, the surface ponding and rivers from natural wetlands and the degraded wetland, and also in an artificial drainage ditch in the Sanjiang Plain during the growing season (May to October) of 2009. Seasonal averaged DOC concentrations were greater in soil and the surface ponding of the degraded riparian wetland than those originating from the natural riparian wetlands (i.e. Bielahong, Yalv and Nongjiang riparian wetlands). Seasonal averaged DIC concentrations in the surface ponding of the degraded wetland increased by 1.76, 0.59 and 2.05 times, compared to those in the Bielahong, Yalv and Nongjiang riparian wetlands, respectively. Similar to dissolved carbon dynamics in the field sites, the seasonal averaged DOC concentration in the degraded marshy river showed higher value (10.36±1.99mg/L), compared to those in the pristine marshy rivers. Seasonal DIC concentrations followed a trend as the degraded marshy river (15.09±2.43mg/L) – the artificial ditch (12.52±1.61mg/L) – pristine marshy rivers on average (8.53±0.96mg/L). Seasonal mean DTC concentration in the artificial ditch showed higher values than that in the natural marshy rivers, while seasonal mean DTC concentration in the degraded marshy river was greater than that in the artificial ditch. Further, seasonal DOC and DIC dynamics were similar in the artificial ditch and the degraded marshy river. These qualitative changes in the dissolved carbon dynamics in our study might have important implications that the impact of building of artificial ditches on dissolved carbon of waters more fully reflected in increases of dissolved carbon resulting from wetland degradation rather than increases in the artificial ditch itself. urate simulation of soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics is vitally important in researching the carbon cycle in terrestrial ecosystems. Especially, the application of SOC model at the regional scale has major implications for regional and global carbon cycling. This paper addresses the regional simulation for SOC in the surface layer (0~15 cm) of paddy soils in Wuxi and Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China from 1982~2000 by linking a model of agro-ecosystem SOC dynamic simulation with GIS data on the basis of 100 × 100 m grids. The dataset includes soil profile descriptions and chemical data of 187 paddy soil samples in the Second National Soil Survey of China in 1982 and 352 paddy soil samples taken in 2000. Soil maps at a scale of 1:50,000 were used for the simulation. Results showed that the area of differences between simulated and observed SOC in 2000 (in the range of −3.6 to 3.6 Mg C ha) accounted for 50.6% of the total area. Also, when a 10% and 20% simulated increase, and a 10%, 20% and 30% simulated decrease in harvested crop straw and manure amendments were simulated to test the sensitivity of the model, simulated SOC would range from 10.26 to 50.40 Mg C ha with a standard deviation of 1.6 and 2.5, respectively. It is indicated that a key factor controlling SOC is the amount of residue and manure inputs. As for the assessment model suitability based on soil textures, soil types, and parent materials, the model seemed to perform better for clayey soils, groundwater-related paddy soils and soils derived from alluvial parent material than for loamy soils, surface water-related paddy soils and soil derived from loess material. In China, cumulative changes in climate and land use/land cover (LULC) from 1981 to 2000 had collectively affected the net productivity in the terrestrial ecosystem and thus the net carbon flux, both of which are intimately linked with the global carbon cycle. This paper represents the first national effort of its kind to systematically investigate the impact of changes of LULC on carbon cycle with high-resolution dynamic LULC data at the decadal scale (1990s and 2000s). The CEVSA was applied and driven by high resolution LULC data retrieved from remote sensing and climate data collected from two ground-based meteorological stations. In particular, it allowed us to simulate carbon fluxes (net primary productivity (NPP), vegetation carbon (VEGC) storage, soil carbon (SOC) storage, heterotrophic respiration (HR), and net ecosystem productivity (NEP)) and carbon storage from 1981 to 2000. Simulations generally agree with output from other models and results from bookkeeping approach. Based on these simulations, temporal and spatial variations in carbon storage and fluxes in China may be confirmed and we are able to relate these variations to climate variability during this period for detailed analyses to show influences of the LULC and environmental controls on NPP, NEP, HR, SOC, and VEGC. Overall, the increases in NPP were greater than HR in most of the time due to the effect of global warming with more precipitation in China from 1981 to 2000. With this trend, the NEP remained positive during that period, resulting in the net increase of total amount of carbon being stored by about 0.296 PgC within the 20-years time frame. Because the climate effect was much greater than that of changes of LULC, the total carbon storage in China actually increased by about 0.17 PgC within the 20 years. Abstract: Preservation of organic matter in estuarine and coastal areas is an important process in the global carbon cycle. This paper presents bulk δ13C and C/N of organic matter from source to sink in the Pearl River catchment, delta and estuary, and discusses the applicability of δ13C and C/N as indicators for sources of organic matter in deltaic and estuarine sediments. In addition to the 91 surface sediment samples, other materials collected in this study cover the main sources of organic material to estuarine sediment. These are: terrestrial organic matter (TOM), including plants and soil samples from the catchment; estuarine and marine suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) from both summer and winter. Results show that the average δ13C of estuarine surface sediment increases from −25.0 ± 1.3‰ in the freshwater environment to −21.0 ± 0.2‰ in the marine environment, with C/N decreasing from 15.2 ± 3.3 to 6.8 ± 0.2. In the source areas, C3 plants have lower δ13C than C4 plants (−29.0 ± 1.8‰ and −13.1 ± 0.5‰ respectively). δ13C increases from −28.3 ± 0.8‰ in the forest soil to around −24.1‰ in both riverbank soil and mangrove soil due to increasing proportion of C4 grasses. The δ13CPOC increases from −27.6 ± 0.8‰ in the freshwater areas to −22.4 ± 0.5‰ in the marine-brackish-water areas in winter, and ranges between −24.0‰ in freshwater areas and −25.4‰ in brackish-water areas in summer. Comparison of the δ13C and C/N between the sources and sink indicates a weakening TOM and freshwater POC input in the surface sedimentary organic matter seawards, and a strengthening contribution from the marine organic matter. Thus we suggest that bulk organic δ13C and C/N analysis can be used to indicate sources of sedimentary organic matter in estuarine environments. Organic carbon in surface sediments derived from anthropogenic sources such as human waste and organic pollutants from industrial and agricultural activities accounts for less than 10% of the total organic carbon (TOC). Although results also indicate elevated δ13C of sedimentary organic matter due to some agricultural products such as sugarcane, C3 plants are still the dominant vegetation type in this area, and the bulk organic δ13C and C/N is still an effective indicator for sources of organic matter in estuarine sediments. Abstract: Water level and chemistry of Lake Qinghai are sensitive to climate changes and are important for paleoclimatic implications. An accurate understanding of hydrological and chemical budgets is crucial for quantifying geochemical proxies and carbon cycle. Published results of water budget are firstly reviewed in this paper. Chemical budget and residence time of major dissolved constituents in the lake are estimated using reliable water budget and newly obtained data for seasonal water chemistry. The results indicate that carbonate weathering is the most important riverine process, resulting in dominance of Ca2+ and DIC for river waters and groundwater. Groundwater contribution to major dissolved constituents is relatively small (4.2 ± 0.5%). Wet atmospheric deposition contributes annually 7.4–44.0% soluble flux to the lake, resulting from eolian dust throughout the seasons. Estimates of chemical budget further suggest that (1) the Buha-type water dominates the chemical components of the lake water, (2) Na+, Cl−, Mg2+, and K+ in lake water are enriched owing to their conservative behaviors, and (3) precipitation of authigenic carbonates (low-Mg calcite, aragonite, and dolomite) transits quickly dissolved Ca2+ into the bottom sediments of the lake, resulting in very low Ca2+ in the lake water. Therefore, authigenic carbonates in the sediments hold potential information on the relative contribution of different solute inputs to the lake and the lake chemistry in the past. Abstract: Understanding the sensitivity of soil respiration to temperature change and its impacting factors is an important base for accurately evaluating the response of terrestrial carbon balance to future climatic change, and thus has received much recent attention. In this study, we synthesized 161 field measurement data from 52 published papers to quantify temperature sensitivity of soil respiration in different Chinese ecosystems and its relationship with climate factors, such as temperature and precipitation. The results show that the observed Q 10 value (the factor by which respiration rates increase for a 10°C increase in temperature) is strongly dependent on the soil temperature measurement depth. Generally, Q 10 significantly increased with the depth (0cm, 5cm, and 10cm) of soil temperature measuring point. Different ecosystem types also exhibit different Q 10 values. In response to soil temperature at the depth of 5cm, alpine meadow and tundra has the largest Q 10 value with magnitude of 3.05±1.06, while the Q 10 value of evergreen broadleaf forests is approximately half that amount (Q 10 =1.81±0.43). Spatial correlation analysis also shows that the Q 10 value of forest ecosystems is significantly and negatively correlated with mean annual temperature (R =−0.51, P <0.001) and mean annual precipitation (R =−0.5, P <0.001). This result not only implies that the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration will decline under continued global warming, but also suggests that such acclimation of soil respiration to warming should be taken into account in forecasting future terrestrial carbon cycle and its feedback to climate system. Compared to other ecosystems, estuarine ecosystems have distinct carbon flux dynamics – the lateral carbon flux incurred by tidal activities, and methane generation under the anaerobic conditions of wetland soils. The conventional estimation of gross primary production (GPP) based on the light use efficiency (LUE) model used for non-wetland terrestrial ecosystems, therefore, cannot be applied directly to estuarine wetland ecosystems. In this paper, we estimated the 2005's annual carbon budget of an estuarine wetland on Chongming Island, Shanghai, and partitioned the losses of carbon due to lateral tidal dynamics and anaerobic methane production using an innovative technique. The average GPP calculated from eddy covariance between March and November was 261.79 μmol m−2 day−1, whereas that from the LUE model was 58.84 μmol m−2 day−1. The correlation coefficient between GPP simulated from the LUE model and that calculated from flux tower data was low in the growing season ( R2=0.55). We hypothesized that tidal activities and uncounted methane release were responsible for the difference, which can be predicted from measurements of remote sensing products such as land surface water index (LSWI), evapotranspiration (ET), and tide height (TH). We developed an integrated GPP model by combining the LUE model and an autoregression model to estimate carbon budget. The average GPP from the modified model increased to 263.38 μmol m−2 day−1, and R2 for the correlation between the simulated and calculated data increased to 0.88, demonstrating the potential of our technique for GPP estimation and quantification of seasonal variation in estuarine ecosystems. The approach developed in this study has great potential for correcting unavoidable errors when estimating carbon budget of coastal wetlands. Furthermore, global warming is expected to accelerate sea level rise, which may enhance the effect of tidal activities and increase the difficulty in estimating coastal carbon budgets using conventional methods. This paper explores the environmental implications of food consumption, from the viewpoint of carbon consumption in Beijing urban households, considering the effects of increasing carbon flux on the environment and alterations in food systems in terms of the carbon cycle. The average food carbon consumption was calculated and analysed in terms of household socioeconomic variables. Several patterns of food carbon consumption with definite socioeconomic characteristics were identified. An average of 279.3 kg food carbon was consumed by households per annum, and was dominated by grain carbon (34.3%). The number of household members, average household age, proportion of male members, education and occupation influence total food carbon consumption of a household. Income influenced consumption of certain foods, thus causing differences in the structure of food carbon consumption. High food carbon consumption patterns tend to emerge in large-size, medium-age, high-male, high-income, medium-education families. Among these, households with a higher age and higher education level have a higher vegetarian carbon dietary pattern, while other households have a higher meat carbon dietary pattern. Soil organic carbon (SOC) is of great importance in the global carbon cycle. Distribution patterns of SOC in various regions of China constitute a nation-wide baseline for studies on soil carbon changes. This paper presents an integrated and multi-level study on SOC stock patterns of China, and presents baseline SOC stock estimates by great administrative regions, river watersheds, soil type regions and ecosystem. The assignment is done by means of a recently completed 1: 1,000,000 scale soil database of China, which is the most detailed and reliable one in China at the present time. SOC densities of 7292 soil profiles collected across China in the middle of the 1980s were calculated and then linked to corresponding polygons in a digital soil map, resulting in a SOC Density Map of China on a 1: 1,000,000 scale, and a 1km×1km grid map. Corresponding maps of administrative regions, river watersheds, soil types (ST), and ecosystems in China were also prepared with an identical resolution and coordinate control points, allowing GIS analyses. Results show that soils in China cover an area of 9.281×106 km2 in total, with a total SOC stock of 89.14Pg (1Pg=1015 g) and a mean SOC density of 96.0tC/ha. Confidence limits of the SOC stock and density in China are estimated as [89.23Pg, 89.08Pg] and [96.143tC/ha, 95.981tC/ha] at 95% probability, respectively. The largest total SOC stock (23.60Pg) is found in South-west China while the highest mean SOC density (181.9tC/ha) is found in north-east China. The total SOC stock and the mean SOC density in the Yangtze river watershed are 21.05Pg and 120.0tC/ha, respectively, while the corresponding figures in theYellow river watershed are 8.46Pg and 104.3tC/ha, respectively. The highest total SOC stocks are found in Inceptisols (34.39Pg) with SOC density of 102.8tC/ha. The lowest and highest mean SOC densities are found on Entisols (28.1tC/ha), and on Histosols (994.728.1tC/ha), repectively. Finally, the total SOC stock in shrub and forest ecosystem classes are 25.55 and 21.50Pg, respectively; the highest mean SOC density (209.9tC/ha) was recorded in the wetland ecosystem class and the lowest (29.0tC/ha) in the desert ecosystem class. Among five forest ecosystem types, Evergreen conifer forest stores the highest SOC stock (6.81Pg), and Deciduous conifer forest shows the highest SOC density (225.9tC/ha). Figures of SOC stocks stratified by Administrative regions, river watersheds, soil types and ecosystem types presented in the study may constitute national-wide baseline for studies of SOC stock changes in various regions in the future. Large scale process-based modeling is a useful approach to estimate distributions of global net primary productivity (NPP). In this paper, in order to validate an existing NPP model with observed data at site level, field experiments were conducted at three sites in northern China. One site is located in Qilian Mountain in Gansu Province, and the other two sites are in Changbaishan Natural Reserve and Dunhua County in Jilin Province. Detailed field experiments are discussed and field data are used to validate the simulated NPP. Remotely sensed images including Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+, 30m spatial resolution in visible and near infrared bands) and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER, 15m spatial resolution in visible and near infrared bands) are used to derive maps of land cover, leaf area index, and biomass. Based on these maps, field measured data, soil texture and daily meteorological data, NPP of these sites are simulated for year 2001 with the boreal ecosystem productivity simulator (BEPS). The NPP in these sites ranges from 80 to 800gCm−2 a−1. The observed NPP agrees well with the modeled NPP. This study suggests that BEPS can be used to estimate NPP in northern China if remotely sensed images of high spatial resolution are available. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper reports the annual carbon (C) balance of China''s forests during 1901–2001 estimated using the Integrated Terrestrial Ecosystem C-budget model (InTEC). Annual carbon source and sink distributions are simulated for the same period using various spatial datasets including land cover and leaf area index (LAI) obtained from remote sensing, soil texture, climate, forest age, and nitrogen deposition. During 1901–1949, China''s forests were a source of 21.0±7.8TgCyr−1 due to disturbances (human activities). Its size increased to 122.3±25.3TgCyr−1 during 1950–1987 due to intensified human activities in the late 1950s, early 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. The forests became large sinks of 176.7±44.8TgCyr−1 during 1988–2001, owing to large-scale plantation and forest regrowth in previously disturbed areas as well as growth stimulation by nondisturbance factors such as climatic warming, atmospheric CO2 fertilization, and N deposition. From 1901 to 2001, China''s forests were a small carbon source of 3.32PgC, about 32.9±22.3TgCyr−1. The overall C balance in biomass from InTEC generally agrees with previous results derived from forest inventories of China''s forests. InTEC results also include C stock variation in soils and are therefore more comprehensive than previous results. The eddy covariance technique provides measurements of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2 between the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems, which is widely used to estimate ecosystem respiration and gross primary production (GPP) at a number of CO2 eddy flux tower sites. In this paper, canopy-level maximum light use efficiency, a key parameter in the satellite-based Vegetation Photosynthesis Model (VPM), was estimated by using the observed CO2 flux data and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) data from eddy flux tower sites in an alpine swamp ecosystem, an alpine shrub ecosystem and an alpine meadow ecosystem in Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, China. The VPM model uses two improved vegetation indices (Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), Land Surface Water Index (LSWI)) derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectral radiometer (MODIS) data and climate data at the flux tower sites, and estimated the seasonal dynamics of GPP of the three alpine grassland ecosystems in Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. The seasonal dynamics of GPP predicted by the VPM model agreed well with estimated GPP from eddy flux towers. These results demonstrated the potential of the satellite-driven VPM model for scaling-up GPP of alpine grassland ecosystems, a key component for the study of the carbon cycle at regional and global scales. Organic carbon storage in agricultural soils plays a key role in the terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle. Paddy soils support important croplands in many parts of the world, especially in Asia. A thorough understanding of organic carbon storage in Chinese paddy soils would be helpful to both greenhouse gases emission and carbon sequestration studies. This paper examines soil organic carbon density (SOCD) and storage (SOCS) of paddy soils in China using the newly compiled 1:1,000,000 digital soil map of China as well as data from 1490 paddy soil profiles. Results show that paddy soils in China cover about 45.7 M ha, nearly 1.5 times more than the results of other studies. In China, the mean SOCD of paddy soils at a depth of 0-100 cm is 111.4 t C ha-1, with a SOCS of 5.1 Pg. These results are 66-75% higher than studies from other scientists. However, the mean SOCD of paddy soils from 0 to 20 cm is 37.6 t C ha-1, with a SOCS of 1.7 Pg, which is 89% higher than studies from other scientists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• China's water use efficiency showed an increasing trend from 2001 to 2017. • The water use efficiency of forest land is higher than that of low vegetation. • Human activities have a greater contribution to the increase in water use efficiency. • China has more areas with positive correlation between water use efficiency and meteorology. In the context of increasing global carbon emissions, and the relative shortage of water resources, research on the relationships between climate change, human activities and the carbon–water coupling response of China's ecosystems is crucial. Water use efficiency (WUE) is an important indicator reflecting the coupling of ecosystem carbon and water cycles. Based on trend analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression residual analysis, this paper analyzes the spatiotemporal distributions, change trends, correlations with meteorological factors, changes in different vegetation coverage types, and relative contributions of the main driving factors of China's vegetation WUE from 2001 to 2017. The results show the following: (1) For the past 17 years, the multiyear average value of vegetation WUE in China is 1.08 g C m - 2 mm - 1 , the average annual growth rate is 0.003 g C m - 2 mm - 1 a - 1 . The area with increasing trend of WUE accounts for 59.09% of the total area. (2) The seasonal WUE is highest in autumn, followed by summer, spring and winter. (3) The areas in which vegetation WUE is positively correlated with temperature and precipitation account for approximately 50.21% and 66.16% of the total area, respectively. (4) In terms of the relative annual average value of the WUE, the different vegetation cover types, in descending order, are mixed forests > needleleaf forests > broadleaf forests > shrublands > grasslands > croplands > wetlands > barren lands. (5) Human activities and climate change contributed 66.75% and 33.25%, respectively, to the increase in vegetation WUE in China in the past 17 years. The research results have important scientific significance for clarifying the impacts of climate change and human activities on the carbon–water cycle of the terrestrial ecosystems of China and assessing regional differences in the potential of terrestrial ecosystems to increase carbon sinks. The late Paleozoic ice age (LPIA) during the Carboniferous and Permian (ca. 360–260 Ma) was vegetated Earth's only recorded icehouse-to-greenhouse transition and provides a deep-time perspective for climate-glaciation-environment coevolution and future climate change. During the LPIA, changes in glacial-interglacial cycles have been closely linked to atmospheric p CO 2. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between volcanism and glacial to interglacial climate cycles during the Pennsylvanian to earliest Cisuralian in the Liujiang Coalfield from the North China Plate (NCP). We use integrated data from Zircon U-Pb dating, Hg/TOC ratios and δ13C org to recover temporal trends in volcanic intensity and relate these to fluctuations in the global carbon cycle and atmospheric p CO 2. Four new radiometric dates from tuffaceous claystones provide a precision stratigraphic framework and constrain the succession to ~322 to 301 Ma. Results date the Benxi Formation to the Bashkirian–Moscovian stages of the Carboniferous, and the Taiyuan Formation ranging from the Kasimovian stage of the Carboniferous to the Asselian stage of the Permian. Results from Hg/TOC ratios record four peaks of volcanic intensity from the Bashkirian to the Carboniferous-Permian (C-P) transition period, and two low ebbs during the early-middle Bashkirian and the early-middle Moscovian. Peaks in volcanic intensity coincide with the four negative excursions of δ13C org and correlate with volcanism in the North China Plate and NW Europe, inferring volcanic drivers for the carbon isotope excursions and perturbations in the global carbon cycle. Periods of higher atmospheric p CO 2 correlate to interglacial intervals, the two lower ebbs in p CO 2 correlate with two positive isotope plateaus, while periods of lower atmospheric p CO 2 and cooling correlate with glacial intervals C3 and C4 recognized from other sections globally. Results suggest volcanism to be a significant driver for late Pennsylvanian to earliest Cisuralian shifts in global climates from glacial to interglacial through greenhouse gas emissions and changes to the global carbon cycle. Our results represent an important contribution to the development of an accurate chronostratigraphy for the continental facies of the NCP during the Pennsylvanian and earliest Permian, enabling correlation of volcanic and climate events including glacial and interglacial cycles. The middle–late Cambrian is a key interval between the Cambrian Explosion and the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE) that marks a major biologic evolutionary transition in the geologic record. Diversity (i.e. richness) patterns in this interval show that macro-biota experienced evolutionary setbacks for the first time. However, relatively little attention has been paid to this interval in previous macroevolutionary studies and very different conclusions about the diversity patterns in coarse time-resolution have been documented. As a dominate group of marine benthic organisms in the Cambrian, trilobites provide insightful information to understand the history of biodiversity in the Cambrian marine ecosystem from the Cambrian Explosion to the GOBE. South China is a region with relatively good preservation of Cambrian fossil materials and sections, and 4 out of 6 Cambrian GSSPs were established in South China. In this paper, we use constrained optimization (CONOP) to correlate 19 sections from South China to reduce the Signor-Lipps effect and integrate the results with high-resolution chronostratigraphic data to evaluate the middle–late Cambrian trilobite diversity pattern in South China. This study, for the first time, constructs a high time-resolution (about 60 kyr) trilobite species-level richness curve with estimated time from Age 4 to the Paibian. A double-peaked species diversification is separated by a minor extinction in Stage 4; this is followed by a gradual decline of species diversity over the entire Wuliuan Age. A radiation of three times increase of species diversity in the Drumian and Guzhangian is exhibited and the diversity remains high for most of the Guzhangian Stage; this is followed by a great extinction at the end of the Guzhangian with around 50% species lost. Detailed comparison with previous composite studies and fossil material from single sections revealed that the Signor-Lipps effect could produce large biases in diversity pattern. Wetland vegetation aboveground biomass (AGB) directly indicates wetland ecosystem health and is critical for water purification, carbon cycle, and biodiversity conservation. Accurate AGB estimation is essential for the monitoring and supervision of ecosystems, especially in seasonal floodplain wetlands. This paper explored the capability of spectral and texture features from the Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) for modeling grassland AGB using random forest (RF) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithms in Shengjin Lake wetland (a Ramsar site). We use five-fold cross-validation to verify the model effectiveness. The results indicated that the RF and XGBoost models had a robust and efficient performance (with root mean square error (RMSE) of 126.571 g·m−2 and R2 of 0.844 for RF, RMSE of 112.425 g·m−2 and R2 of 0.869 for XGBoost), and the XGBoost models, by contrast, performed better. Both traditional and red-edge vegetation indices (VIs) obtained satisfactory results of AGB estimation (RMSE = 127.936 g·m−2, RMSE = 125.879 g·m−2 in XGBoost models, respectively), with the red-edge VIs contributed more to the AGB models. Moreover, we selected eight gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) textures calculated by four processing window sizes using the mean value of four offsets, and further analyzed the results of three analysis sets. Textures derived from traditional and red-edge bands using a 7 × 7 window size performed better in biomass estimation. This finding suggested that textures derived from the traditional bands were as important as the red-edge bands. The introduction of textures moderately improved the accuracy of modeling AGB, whereas the use of textures alo ne was not satisfactory. This research demonstrated that using the Sentinel-2 MSI and the two ensemble algorithms is an effective method for long-term dynamic monitoring and assessment of grass AGB in seasonal floodplain wetlands, which can support sustainable management and carbon accounting of wetland ecosystems. • How vegetation greenness and carbon flux respond to extreme droughts was quantified. • Drought caused the largest reduction in GPP than NEP and LAI across China. • Forest was less sensitive to extreme droughts. • Loess Plateau was highlighted as the most vulnerable region. Increasing drought stress under climate change exerting large impacts on vegetation has aroused growing concern, yet how vegetation greenness and carbon cycle respond to extreme drought is not well understood. In this paper, we studied this issue with various data sources including satellite observation, flux sites upscaling estimation, atmospheric inversion, and Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (DGVM) simulations over China during the period 2000–2015. We found a highly consistent negative response of greenness and carbon fluxes to extreme droughts, with the largest reduction in Gross Primary Productivity (GPP, a standardized anomaly of -1.26 ~ -0.33), a slightly smaller extent decrease of Net Ecosystem Productivity (NEP, -0.74 ~ -0.14) due to concurrent decrease of respiration, and reduced Leaf Area Index (LAI, -0.39 ~ -0.20). Besides, there was a large spatial heterogeneity across different regions and biomes, where Loess Plateau was one of the most vulnerable regions. The ambient climate conditions were found to modulate the drought response. China experienced heavy aerosol pollution in recent years. The aerosol pollution changes surface solar radiation and affects the land terrestrial carbon and water cycles in China. However, there are still some uncertainties in evaluating aerosol effects on ecosystem. Therefore, we combined the MODIS Atmosphere and Land products with process-based model to examine the sensitivity of gross primary productivity (GPP) and water use efficiency (WUE) to AOD. We also evaluated the effects of aerosol loadings on GPP and WUE at China FLUX sites from 2002 to 2015. Our results indicated that the radiative effects of aerosols on GPP varied with the vegetation type, which is consistent with other studies. Aerosol enhances the GPP by 2% in forest and reduces the GPP by 7% in grass land during the study period. We also found that the radiative effects of aerosols on WUE varied with the vegetation type. The WUE was promoted by the aerosols for all surface types when AOD is lower than 2.3. This indicates that the aerosol could enhance the plants WUE in most cases. Cloud during the study period restrains aerosol effects on growth of plants and improves the aerosol effects on WUE. Aerosol loadings during the study period fertilized the growth in two forest growth and slightly impede the growth of grass. They also improve the WUE for all vegetation types. The WUE increases more that 4% in most of sites increases. Understanding the fractionation mechanism and factors controlling carbon isotopes (δ13C) in macrophytes is significant for studying the biogeochemical carbon cycle and changes in nutrients within lakes. However, whether the environmental implications of δ13C are different in the different components (α-cellulose, holocellulose and whole sample) of macrophytes is unclear. In this paper, the δ13C composition of different macrophytes tissue components in Taihu Lake was analysed on spatial and temporal scales. The effects of aquatic environmental variables on the δ13C values of macrophytes were also explored. The results showed that emergent plants have the most negative stable carbon isotope signals, with a mean value (±SD) of −27.85‰ ± 0.95‰. Submerged macrophytes have large variations with significantly more positive δ13C values (−15.19‰ ± 3.08‰). The δ13C values of floating-leaved plants (−25.32‰ ± 1.02‰) fall between those of the two groups above. In the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), the different components (α-cellulose, holocellulose and whole sample) of δ13C exhibited significant differences (p-value <0.01) among the three groups of macrophytes. However, there was no significant seasonal difference in the δ13C of macrophytes. In addition, the δ13C of macrophytes in rivers were lighter than those in lakes. Correlation analyses indicated that the water pH was the main factor affecting δ13C variability in macrophytes. The δ13C values of α-cellulose showed stronger sensitivity to environmental variation than did those of the whole samples and holocellulose. Hence, it is necessary to extract α-cellulose when using the δ13C of aquatic macrophytes to study the changes in lake ecological environments. Coastal wetlands play an increasingly important role in regulating greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes and thus affecting climate change. However, the overall magnitude, trend, and environmental drivers of GHG fluxes in these wetlands of China remain uncertain. Herein, we synthesized data from 70 publications involving 187 field observations to identify patterns and drivers of GHG fluxes across coastal wetlands in China. Average methane (CH 4), nitrous oxide (N 2 O) fluxes, and carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions (ecosystem respiration) across coastal wetlands were estimated as 2.20±0.31 mg·m-2·h-1, 16.44±2.96 μg·m-2·h-1, and 388.76±42.28 mg·m-2·h-1, respectively. GHG emissions varied with tidal inundation, where CH 4 and CO 2 emissions during tidal inundation were lower than during ebbing. CH 4 and CO 2 emissions from wetlands decreased linearly with increasing latitude, while N 2 O did not. CH 4 fluxes were positively related to air temperature and aboveground biomass, and CO 2 emissions were positively related to soil organic carbon. N 2 O fluxes were lower with increasing soil pH, and CH 4 and CO 2 emissions were greater with increasing soil moisture. Based on the results of sustained-flux global warming potential and sustained-flux global cooling potential models, our paper indicate that the fluxes of CH 4 and N 2 O in coastal wetlands have a positive feedback to global warming, which is mainly driven by the CH 4 emission. Our synthesis improved understanding of the roles of coastal wetlands in the ecosystem C cycle under global change. We suggest that long-term field observations of GHG fluxes across a wider range of spatiotemporal scales are urgently required to improve the prediction accuracy in GHG fluxes and the assessment of net GHG balance and its contribution to the GWP of coastal wetlands. The Junggar Basin in northwestern China is a typical "walled" sedimentary basin that has a prolonged basin evolution history from the Paleozoic to Cenozoic and is rich in petroleum resources. Permian strata reach thousands of meters in thickness and have been intensively studied for their record of regional tectonics and paleoenvironments. They have also been exploited for oil and gas for the past several decades. In this paper, we summarize perspectives on tectonic evolution, stratigraphic framework, sedimentary environments, and the paleoclimate of the Permian Junggar Basin and the adjacent Turpan Basin. Further, we discuss the mechanism and consequences of massive organic carbon burial. Based on a compilation of published radiometric dating datasets, an updated chronostratigraphic framework was proposed for the Junggar Basin. This framework constrains the ages of two main petroleum source intervals, the Fengcheng Formation and the Lucaogou and equivalent formations, as Early Permian and Middle Permian, respectively. Although a global warming and drying trend was present throughout the Permian Period, the regional climate over the Junggar Basin was drier in Early Permian and more humid in the Middle-Late Permian with short-term climatic fluctuations. During the deposition of the two petroleum source intervals, dry and temperate climate prevailed and evaporative lacustrine environment dominated. Organic matter enrichment was promoted by stable salinity stratification and limited dilution by inorganic sediments, leading to one of the richest lacustrine source rock deposits in the world. The average organic carbon burial rates were 11.2 gC/m2/yr for the Lucaogou Formation and 3.5 gC/m2/yr for the Fengcheng Formation, lower than the average organic carbon burial rate in modern lakes. However, considering the large areas of global tectonic lakes in the Permian Period, organic carbon burial in lacustrine environments could act as a significant carbon sink and impact the global carbon cycle and climate evolution. China has committed to ambitious targets to reduce its carbon emissions in the next decades, in order to combat climate change and improve the environment. The realization of the targets depends on the fair and effective mitigation plans of all provinces. However, with varying ecological and environmental conditions and social-economic development, it is a critical issue to quantify the provinces' efforts equally. This paper proposed a comprehensive fE index in coordinating ecology, equity and economy, by accounting for carbon emissions and sinks to characterize provincial carbon emission status in China, from 2000 to 2017, which shows a spatial pattern of "boundary high, central low". The provinces with higher fE value (>1.5) in boundary areas can be seen as "relative equality" provinces with good ecology circulation, equity and economic efficiency. The provinces with lower fE value (<0.7) in central areas around Bohai Bay are regarded as "severe inequality" provinces, and are identified as the hot-spot provinces, which have emitted more CO2 than their equity share by occupying the carbon emission space of other provinces in recent decades. Much of our existing knowledge of Middle Jurassic paleoclimate is based on well-dated marine isotopic records that show fluctuations between warm (greenhouse effected) and cool climates. In contrast, much less is known from contemporaneous terrestrial deposits that are often difficult to correlate stratigraphically with marine successions, and are typically considered as showing regional rather than global signals. In this paper we show that the carbon-isotopic, petrological and floral record through 20 m thick coals in the Northern Qaidam Basin (NW, China) represents a relatively comprehensive northern hemisphere Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) record for terrestrial climatic change. δ13C coal values for 88 samples from the Yuqia area in Northern Qaidam Basin range from–25.3‰ to –22.5‰, indicating that C3 plants were the main coal-forming vegetation in the region during the Middle Jurassic. This isotopic variation follows fluctuations in the composition of ferns and gymnosperms, where higher ratios correspond to more negative δ13C values. The similar carbon isotope values of gymnosperms and coal from the Yuqia area indicate that the coal comprises a high proportion of organic material derived from gymnosperm taxa, which is consistent with the very high abundance of diterpenoids in coal and especially pimarane and abietane that are produced primarily by gymnosperms. Results from the coal matrix provide an opportunity to record paleoclimate changes, showing several striking and regular coal-forming cycles with distinct long- and short-term variations. Trends of δ13C coal values changes coupled with the evolution of coal-forming plants may record a gradual increase in paleo-CO 2 (p CO 2) concentration, water-table level changes and the decrease in abundance of Classopollis conifer pollen through Bajocian. This result is in accordance with the published marine carbonate records for this time, with correlation enabled through matching carbon isotope curves from the terrestrial succession at Yuqia and marine records. The similarity of the terrestrial and marine geochemical and floral record is an indication that the observed paleoclimate signal is a global phenomenon. The Cretaceous Era has always been a focus of geologic and palaeoenvironmental studies. Previous researchers believed that the impact of the global carbon cycle represents significant short-term global biogeochemical fluctuations, leading to the formation of a large number of organic rich sediments in the marine environment. During the Turonian, a large number of organic-rich oil shales were deposited in the lakes of the Songliao Basin in the Qingshankou Formation. How the depositional environment affected the formation of oil shales in continental lakes and the characteristics of these oil shales remain controversial. In this paper, through sampling of Qingshankou Formation strata, various testing methods are used to provide a variety of new data to study the characteristics of oil shales and palaeoenvironment evolution history in the Songliao Basin. The research of the sediments in the Qingshankou Formation in the Fuyu oilfield, Songliao Basin, via result analysis revealed that the oil shales possess an excellent oil-generation potential with moderate-high total organic carbon (TOC) levels (0.58–9.43%), high hydrogen index (HI) values (265–959 mg hydrocarbons (HC)/g TOC), high extractable organic matter (EOM) levels (2.50–6.96 mg/g TOC) and high hydrocarbon fractions (48–89%). The sources of the organic matter were mainly zooplankton, red algae and higher plants (including marine organisms). The aqueous palaeoenvironment of the Qingshankou Formation was a saline water environment with a high sulfate concentration, which promoted an increase in nutrients and stratification of the water density in the lake basin. Oxygen consumption in the bottom water layer promoted the accumulation and burial of high-abundance organic matter, thus forming the high-quality oil shales in the Qingshankou Formation. The global carbon cycle, warm-humid palaeoclimate, dynamic local biogeochemical cycling and relative passive tectonism were the most likely reasons for the TOC increase and negative δ13Corg deviation. Climate change has emerged as one of the most important environmental issues worldwide. As the world's biggest developing country, China is participating in combating climate change by promoting a low carbon economy within the context of global warming. This paper summarizes the pathways of China's low carbon economy including the aspects of energy, industry, low carbon cities, circular economy and low carbon technology, afforestation and carbon sink, the carbon emission trading market and carbon emission reduction targets. There are many achievements in the implementation of low carbon policies. For example, carbon emission intensity has been reduced drastically along with the optimizing of energy and industry structure and a nationwide carbon trading market for electricity industry has been established. However, some problems remain, such as the weakness of public participation, the ineffectiveness of unified policies for certain regions and the absence of long-term planning for low carbon cities development. Therefore, we propose some policy recommendations for the future low carbon economy development in China. Firstly, comprehensive and long-term planning should be involved in all the low carbon economy pathways. Secondly, to coordinate the relationship between central and local governments and narrow the gap between poor and rich regions, different strategies of carbon emission performance assessment should be applied for different regions. Thirdly, enterprises should cooperate with scientific research institutions to explored low carbon technologies. Finally, relevant institutions should be regulated to realize comprehensive low carbon transition through reasonable and feasible low carbon pathways in China. Terrestrial ecosystems have received considerable attention as a significant sink for organic carbon at regional to global scales. Previous studies were focused on assessment and quantification of carbon sinks for one ecotype, and few have worked on the interconnection of terrestrial sinks. In this paper, we synthesized the data from China's second national soil survey and direct measurements from 54 lakes. Meanwhile, we investigated the controlling factors of carbon accumulation dynamics in soils and lakes. Results showed varied spatial distribution of soil and lake organic carbon in different regions, and three storage modes were found. The storage mode of watershed collection was observed in the region of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, while the northeast China and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau revealed another storage mode of autochthonous deposition, and the mode of human activities affection was represented by the East Plain and Mongolia-Xinjiang Plateau. The spatial difference throughout China was regulated by various climate patterns, geological conditions and anthropogenic interference. To study the impact of the promotion of electric vehicles on carbon emissions in China, the full life carbon emissions of electric vehicles are studied on the basis of considering such factors as vehicle weight and grid mix composition, and fuel vehicles are added for comparison. In this paper, we collect data for 34 domestic electric vehicles, and linear regression analysis is used to model the relationship between vehicle weight and energy consumption. Then, a Hybrid Life Cycle Assessment method is used to establish the life cycle carbon emission calculation model for electric vehicles and fuel vehicles. Finally, the life cycle carbon emissions of electric vehicles and fuel vehicles under different electrical energy structures are discussed using scenario analysis. The results show that under the current grid mix composition in China, the carbon emissions of electric vehicles of the same vehicle weight class are 24% to 31% higher than that of fuel vehicles. As the proportion of clean energy in the grid mix composition increases, the advantages of electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions will gradually emerge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wild fish faeces play an important role in mediating marine organic carbon cycle, but the faeces released dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its potentials in contribution to refractory DOM is unclear. The mixed wild fish (including mesopelagic fish) faecal samples from the northern South China Sea were collected and incubated up to 75 days using the waters collected at 800 m depth of the same site, to reveal the stability of the faeces released DOM. Our result showed that the faeces had a good DOM-release potential and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was up to 150 μM in the first day and reached its maximum (172 μM) on day 3, which was in comparison with the control group (DOC <70 μM). In our incubations, the faecal samples contributed net DOC of 110 μM, in which 42 μM persisted till the end of the 75 days dark incubation. This meant the faeces-released DOC had a refractory fraction of 38% over the incubation. Total hydrolysable amino acids concentration significantly dropped, and amino acids molecular indicator (DI, AA C yield and D/L ratio) changes over the incubation indicated the fast transformation of DOM from labile to degraded stage. Network analysis was applied to the amino acids and our result showed that D-form amino acids were almost positively coupled with L-form amino acids. Glycine (in mol%) showed consistent accumulation along with DOM degradation. Also, glycine was at the key node position of the amino acids network, showing negative relation with all other amino acids enantiomers in both faeces group and control group. Multiple lines of evidence revealed that enormous CO 2 was input into the ocean-atmosphere system during Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE 1a), which led to a series of environmental perturbations (e.g. temperature rising, enhanced weathering, promoted primary productivity and marine anoxia). Among them, increased carbon isotope fractionation (Δ13C carb-org) between the carbonate (δ13C carb) and organic carbon (δ13C org) in the sediments is one of the most important indicators to the enhanced atmospheric pCO 2. However, only a few research reported high-resolution paired carbon isotopes during OAE 1a, which were almost limited around the western Tethys. Here, we report new paired carbon isotopes of the Early Cretaceous sediments from the ODP site 866A in the western Pacific and the Lingshan Island section in the Sulu orogenic belt. The δ13C carb curves from both sections correlate well with OAE 1a, in which a positive δ13C carb excursion is identified between the C3–C6 segments. The Δ13C carb-org displays a ∼7–11‰ positive shift coinciding with the δ13C carb excursion, indicating a remarkable increase and a gradual decrease in CO 2 in water and atmosphere, which further support significant atmospheric pCO 2 changes during OAE 1a on a global scale. The sediments also show a few variations in carbon isotope records during OAE 1a between different locations, which may reflect different influences from local environments, and the deviations of stratigraphic correlation and diagenesis cannot be ruled out either. • The carbon isotopes from both sections correlate well with OAE 1a. • Atmospheric pCO 2 rose in early OAE 1a and fell in late OAE 1a on a global scale. • The atmospheric pCO 2 changes show a few variations between different locations.
