The need to reduce carbon emissions, via exploring the CO 2 storage potential in the depleted subsurface hydrocarbon and the deep saline aquifers in the Baltic Basin region of Lithuania, is discussed. The paper presents a unique methodology, using multi-deterministic numerical models, for evaluating the CO 2 storage potential of the deep saline aquifers and the depleted hydrocarbon fields of Lithuania. Such an approach has never been presented before for evaluation of Lithuanian subsurface reservoirs for CO 2 storage potential. The paper also explains the limitations of previous estimates of CO 2 storage potential computed for deep saline aquifers in Lithuania and introduces a new study that uses uncertainty quantification principle and numerical modelling to estimate the maximum CO 2 injection and storage potential in the region. Three deep saline aquifers D11 (offshore), Syderiai and Vaskai (on shore) are evaluated along with depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs of Gargzdai residual oil zone. Evaluation estimates presented in this paper suggest a maximum theoretical storage potential in range of 96 –407 Mt. of CO 2 for the three deep saline aquifers and in range of 64–267 Mt. of CO 2 for Gargzdai residual oil zone. Although the primary focus of this paper is on the storage capacity estimation, a high-level analysis of the risks associated with CO 2 injection and storage are also presented. Histosols cover about 8–10% of Lithuania's territory and most of this area is covered with nutrient-rich organic soils (Terric Histosols). Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from drained Histosols contribute more than 25% of emissions from the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector. In this study, as the first step of examining the carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes in these soils, total soil CO2 efflux and several environmental parameters (temperature of air and topsoil, soil chemical composition, soil moisture, and water table level) were measured in drained Terric Histosols under three native forest stands and perennial grasslands in the growing seasons of 2020 and 2021. The drained nutrient-rich organic soils differed in terms of concentrations of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen, as well as soil organic carbon and total nitrogen ratio. The highest rate of total soil CO2 efflux was found in the summer months. Overall, the rate was statistically significant and strongly correlated only with soil and air temperature. A trend emerged that total soil CO2 efflux was 30% higher in perennial grassland than in forested land. Additional work is still needed to estimate the net CO2 balance of these soils. Abstract: Nuclear power and carbon capture and storage (CCS) are key greenhouse gas mitigation options under consideration across the world. Both technologies imply long-term waste management challenge. Geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nuclear waste has much in common, and valuable lessons can be learnt from a comparison. Seeking to compare these technologies economic, social and environmental criteria need to be selected and expressed in terms of indicators. Very important issue is costs and economics of geological storage of carbon dioxide and nuclear waste. The costs of storage are one of the main indicators for assessment of technologies in terms of economic criteria. The paper defines the costs of the geological storage of CO2 and nuclear waste in Lithuania, drawing also on insights from other parts of the world. The costs of carbon dioxide and nuclear waste storage are evaluated in UScnt/kWh and compared. The paper critically compares the characteristics and location of the both sources of and storage options for CO2 and nuclear waste in Lithuania. It discusses the main costs categories for carbon dioxide and nuclear waste storage. The full range of potential geological storage options is considered and the most reliable options for carbon dioxide and nuclear waste are selected for the comparative costs assessment. The EU is considering increasing the GHG emissions reduction target by 2020 from 20% to 30% by committing each member state to tighten up its emission reduction goals. According to the recent study such decision could cost some 2 365 million LTL to Lithuanian economy. Evaluation and comparison of CO2 abatement costs incurred by the state implementing a variety of measures in different sectors allow choosing a most cost effective policy scenario. The paper focuses on CO2 emissions related to energy use in buildings. First, this paper reviews the role of the Lithuanian building stock in overall GHG emissions. Then the paper examines the existing studies on the CO2 mitigation potential and cost in buildings. Given the limitations of existing evaluation and lack of comprehensive modelling in the existing studies, this paper proposes a framework for examining the technology options aimed to inform policy making on the options to reduce CO2 emissions in Lithuanian housing and service sectors. The agricultural machinery is making a considerable negative contribution to the acceleration of global warming. In this study, we analyzed the impact of combine harvesters (CHs) on the global warming potential (GWP) by evaluating the telematics data from 67 CHs operating in Lithuania and Latvia between 2016 and 2020. This study examined the use of their technological operations and the associated impacts on ambient air and performed field tests using the same CH model to determine the composition of exhaust gases and the impact of different technological operations on GWP. The data confirmed the release of significant GWP during indirect operation, and it was estimated that considerable lengths of time were spent in idle (~20%) and transport (~13%) modes. During these operations, over 13% of the total GWP (~27.4 t year−1 per CH), affected by emissions, was released. It was calculated that a GWP reduction exceeding 1 t year−1 per machine can be achieved by optimizing the idling and transport operations. The dual telematics/field test data approach facilitates a comprehensive assessment of both the impact of CH exhaust gases on GWP and the methods for reducing the negative impact on the environment. The expansion of production and the use of biofuels are determined by the legal acts of the European Commission and National legal acts encouraging such production and usage. It would be meaningful to use the mixtures of butanol and petrol in Otto engines. It was determined the possibility of producing biobutanol as a biofuel of the second generation from lignocellulose hydrolyzed to C5/C6 carbohydrates. If the 20-30% potential of lignocellulose biomass in Lithuania is used, it would be possible to produce 200-300 thousand t of biobutanol per year. Th e amount of carbon monoxide CO decreases by more than 80% when the engine works using the mixtures of petrol and butanol if compared to the CO amount of the engine working with petrol. When the engine works using the mixture of 30% butanol and petrol, the amount of carbon dioxide CO2 decreases by 4% on average, and in case it works with the mixture of 50% butanol and petrol - by 14% if compared to the CO2 amount of the engine working using petrol. When the engine works using the mixture of 30% butanol and petrol, the amount of hydrocarbons HC decreases by 26% on average, and if it works with the mixture of 50% butanol and petrol, the amount increases by some 4% if compared to the HC amount of the engine working using petrol. To generalize the results of the performed experiment, it is possible to state that the optimal mixture would consist of 70% petrol and 30% biobutanol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
