Mixtures of carbon dioxide and perfluorocarbons are more frequently used in different fields: in energy conversion systems, in the electronic industry, in chemical plants and for medical applications. Among all perfluorocarbons, perfluorohexane has interesting properties (e.g. high thermal stability and high carbon dioxide solubility) to be used in mixture, as a working fluid in power and refrigeration cycles. The study of these systems relies on the availability of accurate thermodynamic models of the fluid mixture, which usually require to be calibrated on experimental data. Experimental data on the carbon dioxide and perfluorohexane mixture are scarcely available in literature and limited to a very narrow temperature range. This work aims to enrich the available literature data on VLE measurements of carbon dioxide and perfluorohexane mixture. On the basis of the implemented static-analytical method, high-pressure phase equilibrium data have been collected. Isothermal measurements have been performed within the temperature range of 273 K–333 K and at pressures up to 8.5 MPa. Particular attention to calibration procedures of the measuring devices (temperature and pressure probes and gas chromatograph) and to uncertainty calculation has been devoted. The high cost of CO 2 capture using amine solvents from combustion sources such as natural gas-fired power plants remains a barrier to the adoption of CO 2 Capture and Storage (CCS) as a climate change mitigation measure. The objective of the work reported in this paper was to carry out a preliminary assessment of the potential of five alternative technologies suitable for post-combustion CO 2 capture from natural gas derived exhaust gases: • CO 2 permeable membranes • Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells • High-pressure solvent absorption from high-pressure exhaust gas from pressurised combustion / power generation • High-pressure solvent absorption supported by exhaust gas compression • Supersonic flow driven CO 2 deposition The results of the performance and cost evaluation for each technology are explained and the prospects for significant cost reduction compared to a state-of-the-art CO 2 capture process are discussed. Abstract: At present, the accurate evaluation of the thermo-physical behaviour of multicomponent fluids represents a crucial element for studying and simulating low CO2 emission energy conversion technologies. In order to extend the range of application of the available thermodynamic models, an intense experimental research activity has been performed in recent years. The main purpose of this paper is to describe the experimental and modelling procedures applied by the authors to measure and to analyse data extracted from the Vapour-Liquid Equilibrium apparatus recently installed at LEAP laboratory. This test rig allows the characterization of mixture phase equilibrium properties on the basis of the static-analytical method, within the pressure and temperature ranges of 0 – 20MPa and -60 – 200̊C. Finally, the paper reports the most relevant features and the main guidelines for the instruments calibration procedures. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
