The specific characteristics of biomass structure and chemical composition of straw stem and leaf may result in different behavior of pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. In this work, sodium carbonate (SC) was employed as a pretreatment to improve the enzymatic digestibility of wheat straw. The chemical composition and enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw stem and leaf (sheath included) were investigated comparatively. Most of the polysaccharides are kept in the solid fractions after SC pretreatment, while the stem has better delignification selectivity than leaf at high temperature. The enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of wheat straw leaf is significantly higher than that of stem. The maximum total sugar yield from SC pretreated leaf was about 16% higher than stem. The results show that sodium carbonate is of great potential to be used as a pretreatment for the production of bioethanol from straw handling waste in a straw pulp mill with a low feedstock cost., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Green liquor consists of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfide and is readily available in any kraft mills. The green liquor pretreatment process for bioethanol production was developed for wood chips. This process uses only proven technology and equipment currently used in a kraft pulp mill and has several additional advantages such as high sugar recovery and concentration, no inhibitive substances produced, as compared to acid-based pretreatment methods. The liquor was used to pretreat corn stover for enhancing enzymatic hydrolysis in bioethanol production. Pulp yield of 70% with 45% lignin removal was achieved under optimized conditions (8% total titratable alkali, 40% sulfidity and 140°C). About 70% of the original polysaccharides were converted into fermentable sugars, using 20 FPU/g-pulp of enzyme in the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. The effects of sodium carbonate (Na(2)CO(3)) pretreatment on the chemical compositions and enzymatic saccharification of rice straw were investigated. The enzymatic digestibility of rice straw is enhanced after pretreatment since pretreated solids show significant delignification with high sugar availability. During pretreatment, an increasing temperature and Na(2)CO(3) charge leads to enhanced delignification, whereas an increased degradation of polysaccharides as well, of which xylan acts more susceptible than glucan. The sugar recovery of enzymatic hydrolysis goes up rapidly with the total titratable alkali (TTA) increasing from 0% to 8%, and then it reaches a plateau. The highest sugar recovery of rice straw after pretreatment, 71.7%, 73.2%, and 76.1% for total sugar, glucan, and xylan, respectively, is obtained at 140°C, TTA 8% and cellulase loading of 20 FPU/g-cellulose. It has been known for a long time that certain additives (e.g., NaCl, CaCl2, Na2CO3, Fe2O3) can increase the sulfur dioxide capture-capacity of limestones. In a recent study we demonstrated that very small amounts of Na2CO3 can be very beneficial for producing sorbents of very high sorption capacities. This paper explores what contributes to these significant increases. Mercury porosimetry measurements of calcined limestone samples reveal a change in the pore-size from 0.04-0.2 microm in untreated samples to 2-10 microm in samples treated with Na2CO3--a pore-size more favorable for penetration of sulfur into the particles. The change in pore-size facilitates reaction with lime grains throughout the whole particle without rapid plugging of pores, avoiding premature change from a fast chemical reaction to a slow solid-state diffusion controlled process, as seen for untreated samples. Calcination in a thermogravimetric reactor showed that Na2CO3 increased the rate of calcination of CaCO3 to CaO, an effect which was slightly larger at 825 degrees C than at 900 degrees C. Peak broadening analysis of powder X-ray diffraction data of the raw, calcined, and sulfated samples revealed an unaffected calcite size (approximately 125-170 nm) but a significant increase in the crystallite size for lime (approximately 60-90 nm to approximately 250-300 nm) and less for anhydrite (approximately 125-150 nm to approximately 225-250 nm). The increase in the crystallite and pore-size of the treated limestones is attributed to an increase in ionic mobility in the crystal lattice due to formation of vacancies in the crystals when Ca is partly replaced by Na.
