Abstract

Experiments on young human subjects reveal that both baroreflex-dependent and baroreflex-independent mechanisms generate cardiac vagal tone in humans. The ratio between the two mechanisms varies in different individuals with the baroreflex-dependent mechanism being the major influence. The change in R-P intervals following complete cholinergic blockade by atropine is designated cardiac vagal tone and regressed against systolic pressure.
