Aim: Establish linkages between components of the Self- and Family Management Framework and outcomes of the Nursing Outcomes Classification to evaluate the comprehensiveness of outcomes addressing self- and family management in the Nursing Outcomes Classification., Design: Descriptive study., Methods: Experts conducted a six-step process to establish linkages: (1) preliminary mapping of all relevant nursing outcomes to the framework; (2) development of checklists for team members serving as 'identifiers' and 'reviewers'; (3) mapping all relevant nursing outcomes to the framework; (4) final agreement on mapped outcomes; (5) establishment of inter-rater reliability; and (6) discussion of findings with authors of the Self- and Family Management Framework., Results: Three hundred and sixty-three nursing outcomes were identified as related to the management of chronic disease across all components of the framework: outcomes related to patient self-management (n = 336), family functioning (n = 16) and family caregivers (n = 11)., Conclusion: The Nursing Outcomes Classification outcomes comprehensively address self-management, and, less so, family functioning, and caregivers., Implications: Established linkages can be used by nurses to track and support patient and family management outcomes across the care continuum., Patient or Public Contribution: Linking standardized nursing outcomes to the Self- and Family Management Framework can assist in goal setting and measurement of nursing care during chronic disease management. This work can help describe to funders, policy makers and others invested in health care reform the specific contributions of nurses to self- and family management of chronic disease., Impact: This paper demonstrates the linkages between components of the Self- and Family Management Framework and Nursing Outcomes Classification outcomes. The results of this study offer the opportunity to quantify the impact of nursing care and enhance nursing practice for patients with chronic conditions as well as contribute to developing Nursing Outcomes Classification outcomes that consider self-management processes., (© 2022 The Authors. Background: Despite the increasing number of individuals with dementia relocated from caregiving at home to a nursing home, there is only a small body of literature examining the influence of institutional family-oriented practices on family member perceptions of care and family-staff relationships., Objective: The study tested the effects of the Family Involvement in Care partnership intervention on family members' perceptions of their caregiving role, relationships with staff, and satisfaction with the care of relatives with dementia residing in special care units as well as the effects on staff attitudes toward families and staff satisfaction with a caregiving role., Methods: A quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent groups and repeated pretest and posttest measures was used to examine the effects of the Family Involvement in Care intervention. The study recruited 14 Midwestern nursing home special dementia care units, matched by aegis and staff turnover, and randomized from matched pairs to experimental and control conditions. The samples included 185 family members and 895 staff. The Family Involvement in Care intervention is a protocol for family and staff negotiation of a written partnership agreement. Family caregiver outcomes were measured using instruments pretested for reliability and validity. Data were analyzed using hierarchical linear modeling., Results: With adjustment for multiple tests, statistically significant beneficial intervention effects were found in three areas of family caregiver outcomes (emotional reactions to the caregiving role, perceptions of relationships with staff, and perceptions of care for relatives) and in one of three areas of staff outcomes (staff perceptions of the family caregiving role). For family members, effects were found for the measures assessing loss, captivity, staff disregard, resident activities, and physical care. Some of the intervention effects for family members were found only for caregivers of the same generation as the resident. For staff, effects were found for measures of dominion, disruption by family, and irrelevance of family., Conclusions: The results of the study indicate that the Family Involvement in Care intervention improves the caregiving experience of family members in nursing homes as well as nursing home staff attitudes toward family members. The intervention did not influence the perceived conflict with staff on the part of family caregivers or the perception of a partnership with family caregivers on the part of staff.

Informal caregiving and outcomes for caregiving are an important part of health care and of particular importance in nursing. The purpose of this research is to report the results of a survey mailed to nursing experts for validation of the outcome labels Caregiver Role Performance: Direct Care and Caregiver Role Performance: Indirect Care and their accompanying indicators. Experts were asked to rate how important the identified indicators were for assessing those two outcomes. In addition, the respondents were asked to what extent nursing interventions influence the achievement of each identified indicator for Caregiver Role Performance: Direct Care and Caregiver Role Performance: Indirect Care. In general, the validity of the concept analysis work by the caregiver focus group was supported. Ten indicators for Caregiver Performance: Direct Care were retained, 1 was dropped that was considered most appropriate for indirect care, and 3 new indicators were added to reflect the nurse experts surveyed. For Caregiver Performance: Indirect Care, all of the indicators were retained.

More than ever before, caregiving has become a salient public policy issue. A number of recent and anticipated demographic, economic and social changes have occurred that make it imperative for researchers to critically examine the impact of caregiving on family caregivers' health, behavior, emotions, and social status. Researchers at the University of Iowa College of Nursing are working to classify standardized nursing-sensitive patient outcomes for use in language development, practice, research, and education to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions and clinical nursing services. This article focuses on family caregiving and the analysis of caregiver role performance in both direct and indirect care, linking outcomes and indicators, to enable nurses to promote the health of caregivers.
