Two hundred feral cats from the inner suburbs of Sydney were examined post mortem for adult Dirofilaria immitis and circulating microfilariae, and 101 of these cats were tested for heartworm antigens by an ELISA. Only 2 cats (1%) had adult heartworms, the blood sample from another cat contained a single microfilaria. The blood of a further three cats contained small amounts of D immitis antigen. Although D immitis occurs in cats in Sydney, the prevalence is not high enough to warrant prophylactic treatment.

The ability of aspirin to block arterial disease and thromboembolism of the pulmonary arteries was studied in heartworm-infected cats. Three groups of cats were transplanted with four heartworms per cat and studied. One group of eight cats (aspirin group) received aspirin (97.5 mg, twice a week) for the five-month infection and another group of eight cats served as the nontreated control group (nontreated group). Based upon the results of the first two groups, the third group (adjusted aspirin group) of six cats was studied in which the aspirin dosage was adjusted in order to maintain an inhibition of in vitro platelet aggregation. Cats were studied by nonselective pulmonary arteriograms before heartworm transplantation and by selective arteriograms, aortograms, and pulmonary hemodynamics five months after heartworm transplant. Pulmonary hypertension, (mean pulmonary artery pressures greater than 16 mmHg), was discovered in three cats with one cat in each group. There were no differences in the mean pulmonary artery pressure or vascular resistance between the groups. Many of the arterial diameters for the nontreated and aspirin groups were greater after the five-month infection than before heartworm infection. All of the postinfection caudal arteries were tortuous and had aneurysms. Some of the caudal lung lobes had perfused areas that appeared to have a hypervascular microvasculature. The proportion of obstructed right and left distal caudal pulmonary arteries and the resulting nonperfused area of the caudal lung lobe in the nontreated and aspirin treated groups were each greater than in the adjusted aspirin group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The morphologic response of the pulmonary arteries and lungs in cats was studied after a five month heartworm infection produced by transplantation of four adult heartworms/cat. One group of seven heartworm infected cats was not treated, another group of seven cats was treated with 97.5 mg of aspirin given twice a week, and the third group of six cats was given aspirin at a sufficient dosage to block in vitro platelet aggregation throughout the study. A fourth group of eight noninfected cats served as controls. Five months after heartworm infection, the cats were euthanized and the lungs perfusion fixed for light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of the pulmonary arterial surfaces. All cats in the three heartworm-infected groups had live heartworms and the typical pulmonary arterial changes of heartworm disease at necropsy. The arterial surfaces, as viewed with scanning electron microscopy, had villus proliferations that were more numerous and exuberant than similar infections in dogs. Mean percentage of arterial surface involvement with villus proliferation of the nontreated heartworm infected cats was 67.3%; the aspirin treated cats, 73.8%; and the adjusted aspirin treated cats, 75.9%. The villi were myointimal proliferations in the small and medium-sized arteries. The more elastic arteries had a predominance of fibromuscular proliferation. All heartworm infected cats had arterial muscular hypertrophy of the small arteries, in contrast to only three of eight of the nonheartworm infected cats. The caudal lobar arteries were frequently obstructed with either villus proliferation, thrombi, and/or dead heartworms. The muscular arteries had branches with marked dilation, a condition associated with pulmonary hypertension in man. A 4-year-old castrated domestic shorthair cat was referred for treatment of chylothorax. Thoracic duct lymphangiography revealed partial obstruction of the cranial vena cava, as evidenced by filling of mediastinal lymphatics with dye instead of all of the dye entering the vena cava. The thoracic duct was ligated via left 10th intercostal space thoracotomy. Immediate postligation lymphangiography revealed successful duct ligation. Results of a serum ELISA for adult heartworm antigen that was performed before surgery were positive. Drug treatment for the heartworm disease was not recommended, because the pleural effusion had ceased (as determined by radiographic examination 3.5 and 9 months after surgery) and the cat was doing well clinically. Sixteen months after surgery, the owner reported that the cat was doing well and did not have signs of respiratory problems.

Prevalences of, and risk factors associated with, protozoan and helminth parasite infections were determined for pet dogs and cats presented to the teaching hospital of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Of 2294 canine fecal specimens, 34.8% were found to contain one or more kinds of parasite, consisting of: hookworms (14.4%); Trichuris vulpis (12.3%); Giardia (7.2%); ascarids (5.5%); coccidia (2.7%); cestodes (1.6%). The following risk factors were identified with infection in dogs: age less than 2 years; urban locality; male sex. Gonadectomy was associated with decreased parasite prevalences in both male and female dogs. Significant seasonal variations in prevalences of hookworm, ascarid and Giardia infections were found in dogs. Of 452 feline fecal specimens tested, 24.6% were positive for parasites, including: ascarids (16.4%); Giardia (3.5%); coccidia (2.9%); cestodes (2.4%); hookworm (1.1%). Host age of less than 2 years was a significant risk factor associated with parasitism in cats. Of 1571 dogs tested for Dirofilaria immitis microfilaremia, 3.7% were positive. Non-urban locality was a significant risk factor for D. immitis infection in dogs.

During a 6-month period, 108 sexually mature stray cats were euthanatized at a humane shelter in Alabama. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus was identified in 20 of the cats (18.5%) by Baermann fecal examination, necropsy, or histologic examination. The Baermann fecal examination was a more sensitive test for aelurostrongylosis than was necropsy or histologic examination. Thoracic radiography was useful in identifying infected cats, but was a less sensitive and more nonspecific method of detection than was the fecal examination. Changes in CBC and serum protein concentrations were not helpful identifying cats with aelurostrongylosis. Six of 17 (35%) heartworm-free, lungworm-infected cats had antibodies to Dirofilaria immitis, as determined by an ELISA method, but none had circulating D immitis antigen, as determined by an ELISA method. Three (2.8%) cats had D immitis. Two of the heartworm-infected cats had no detectable antemortem radiographic or clinicopathologic evidence of the infection. Results of ELISA were positive for antibodies to adult heartworms in 2 cats and for circulating heartworm antigen in 2 cats. One cat that had only one heartworm had no detectable circulating heartworm antigen.

Filarial infections in 447 cats and 68 dogs from six endemic areas of human filariasis in Peninsular Malaysia were studied as part of the study on the zoonotic transmission of subperiodic Brugia malayi infection. 20.6% of cats and 57.4% of dogs had filarial infections. Cats were infected with subperiodic B. malayi, B. pahangi, Dirofilaria repens and D. immitis. Dogs were infected with B. pahangi and D. immitis. 6.9% of the cats had subperiodic B. malayi infection. The zoonotic implications of these infections and their impact on the filariasis control programme in Peninsular Malaysia were discussed.

Hematologic and radiographic findings in 15 domestic cats inoculated with 25, 100, or 200 to 400 infective larvae of Dirofilaria immitis and in 5 uninoculated cats were compared. Eosinophilia and leukocytosis developed 3 to 5 months after inoculation; packed cell volume and hemoglobin values were similar for inoculated cats and controls. Changes detected in radiographs of inoculated cats were: (1) increased visualization of the pulmonary arteries; (2) right-side cardiac enlargement; and (3) diffuse to focal areas of density in the pulmonary parenchyma. At least one of these lesions was visible radiographically by 3 to 7 months after inoculation in all 15 cats. The severity of changes was not directly proportional to the number of infective larvae inoculated, adult worm burden, or age of cat. However, male cats had more severe cardiopulmonary lesions than did females, and cats that had microfilaremia during the course of infection had more severe pulmonary lesions, as determined radiographically. Parenchymal densities decreased in 8 of the 15 inoculated cats 6 to 14 months after inoculation. Cardiac enlargement was detected radiographically in 10 of the inoculated cats. Enlargement of the pulmonary arteries was the most consistent sign of D immitis infection; it developed and persisted in 12 cats found to be infected at necropsy.

Natural and experimental infections of cats with Dirofilaria immitis have been reported. Experimental infections of D. immitis in cats with the subsequent detection of microfilaremia and immediate skin hypersensitivity to antigen to D. immitis were produced. Cutaneous nodules and chylothorax were also detected in some infected cats. Adult worm recoveries were low and dead worms were found in some cats indicating the unsuitability of the cat as a host for D. immitis. However, one successful mosquito passager of D. immitis from a cat to a dog was accomplished.
