Edwardsiellosis of catfish caused by Edwardsiella ictaluri and Edwardsiella piscicida remains one of the most significant diseases in U.S. catfish aquaculture. Economic losses related to this disease are currently unknown. This work sheds light on the losses associated with E. ictaluri and E. piscicida in catfish aquaculture. The robust economic approach employed is grounded in farm-level production data and long-term disease trends in the industry. Direct farm-level economic losses from Edwardsiellosis ranged from −$3,485 to −$13,320/ha causing industrywide economic losses of −$5.2 to −$17.6 million/year. The lost revenue due to Edwardsiellosis ranged from −$8.4 to −$24.8 million/year causing a negative economic impact of −$15.5 to −$45.9 million/year. The economic losses and negative impacts of Edwardsiellosis are relatively greater on the foodfish sector compared to the fingerling sector. This work provides a platform for a more accurate estimation of the true economic impacts of diseases for aquaculture sectors for which commercial farm data is available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Feed conversion ratio (FCR) is widely used as a measure of feed use efficiency in commercial aquaculture production and research. Surprisingly, little work has focused on the factors that affect FCR in plankton‐based, commercial ponds despite the widespread use of FCR as a production metric. Proposals to use FCR as a numeric standard for environmental regulation (mandatory or voluntary) raise questions as to whether FCR meets the reliability and consistency requirements of a good metric, and whether it would lead to desired behavioral changes. This article summarizes FCR data from university research verification programs conducted on US catfish farms and databases developed from commercial farm records. The relevant research literature is synthesized with respect to factors that affect FCR. US catfish is used as a case study because pond‐level data from verification trials (Extension/research‐led on‐farm trials of best available science) and commercial farm records are available. While specific to US catfish production, the analysis provides insights into factors affecting FCR that likely apply to other pond‐based aquaculture species. Commercial verification of pond data showed (1) significant variation in FCR (coefficients of variation from 1% to 47%) among ponds with similar stocking, feeding, and aeration rates; (2) significant effects of survival on FCR; and (3) no significant effects on FCR of yield, feed type, management, or production system. Improvements in FCR would occur with improved survival that requires improved management of federally protected fish‐eating bird populations and development of additional, effective vaccines for diseases. FCRs were found to not exhibit the degree of reliability and consistency required for use as an effective metric or numeric standard for regulatory purposes. Interest in retail seafood sales increased dramatically with the onset of the COVID‐19 pandemic. The diversity of species, types of products, product forms, and packaging of the seafood sold at retail, combined with diverse consumer preferences across the United States, requires detailed data and analysis to provide guidance and understanding of emerging trends. Weekly, store‐based, Nielsen Scantrack data for the period of September 2016 through August 2021 were used to compare trends in US retail (supermarket) seafood sales across the 5‐year study period, in continental regions, cities, and species categories sold. Results showed continuous increases in retail seafood sales over the study period at an average annual growth rate of 8.1%, much of which was fueled by the 21% increase in total sales (19.5% increase in quantity sold) the first year after the onset of the pandemic. The South Atlantic region was found to have the greatest total sales and sales per capita among regions. New York City had the greatest total seafood sales, followed by Los Angeles and Philadelphia. The top five most important species categories in terms of sales were, in declining order, shrimp, salmon, tuna, crab, and tilapia, although regional variability became apparent from the fourth‐ranked species. The most important package sizes were 454‐ and 907‐g packs. Frozen and refrigerated categories dominated sales (70% in 2021), with little growth in entrées and a decline in market share of shelf‐stable seafood products in 2021. Retail supermarket seafood sales increased dramatically following the onset of the pandemic, with especially notable percentage increases in lobster (77%) and crab sales (70%) and the lowest percentage increases in tuna (1%) and tilapia (13%). Given that US per capita seafood consumption did not show a corresponding increase over the study period, study results likely indicate a shift to greater relative consumption at home and not an overall increase in US seafood sales. Understanding the economic effects of regulations on US aquaculture farms provides insights into which compliance costs create the greatest compliance burden on farms. This can further guide strategies to improve the efficiency of regulatory frameworks and potentially reduce on‐farm compliance costs while maintaining adequate oversight. This study estimated the regulatory compliance burden on US catfish farms as part of a national effort to quantify the cost of regulations on US aquaculture farms. Completed survey interviews of catfish farms in the major catfish‐producing states covered 63% of the total US catfish production area. Total regulatory costs of the US catfish industry were estimated at $45 million annually. Lost farm revenues (measured as the value of lost production, the value of markets lost from regulations, and the value of business opportunities lost because of regulations) were estimated to be $35 million per annum. Catfish‐producing states outside the Alabama/Arkansas/Mississippi region had the highest ($2856/ha) and Alabama the lowest ($1127/ha) regulatory costs per hectare among the surveyed states. The greatest regulatory cost burden on catfish farms ($18 million) was caused by environmental regulations related mostly to the management of federally protected piscivorous migratory birds, followed by labor regulations ($12 million), and taxes/insurance ($7 million). Regulatory costs ($/kg) were 2.6 times higher on smaller (<80 ha) farms relative to larger (>300 ha) farms. The U.S. catfish industry is evolving by adopting intensive farming practices such as intensively aerated ponds and split-pond systems. The functional relationship between fish yield and key production inputs in these intensive systems was analyzed based on commercial catfish production data from 143 pond observations (2010−2018). A Cobb-Douglas production function was employed for the intensively aerated ponds and a modified translog production function was used to define the production relationships in split ponds. Results indicated that the size of fingerlings at stocking, stocking density, aeration rate, feeding rate, survival, and harvest size of the fish were statistically significant variables influencing fish production in intensively aerated ponds. Initial fingerling stocking biomass (interaction of stocking size and stocking density), feed conversion ratio (FCR), feeding rate, and pond size were the most important variables influencing production in split-pond systems. Feed fed, as well as stocking biomass, were the significant variables found in both models. Catfish farming continues to be the largest segment of U.S. aquaculture, and U.S. catfish farmers have demonstrated resilience and resourcefulness in adapting to changing economic conditions. Commercial production began in the 1950s–1960s, with growth leading to processing and marketing challenges in the 1970s. By the early 1980s, the key production, processing, and marketing pieces were in place to transform catfish farming into a major enterprise. Keys included development of efficient aerators, nutritionally complete feeds, multiple-batch production providing year-round supply of fish, processing innovations, and creation of The Catfish Institute (TCI) for marketing and public relations. The successful expansion into nontraditional catfish markets attracted competition of pangasius catfish imported from Vietnam by U.S. seafood importers, free riding on successful marketing programs. The 2003–2013 contraction of the U.S. industry was the combined effect of four external economic shocks; trough of price cycle; 2001 recession; September 11 terrorist attacks; and Vietnamese pangasius imports. Prices fell to historical lows and remained below production cost for 3 years. Adoption of intensive systems (split ponds, intensive aeration) that reduced costs led to steady growth from 2014 to 2019. Practical approaches that estimate farm-level use and efficiencies of major resources would measure both environmental and economic sustainability of aquaculture production along with providing inferences on improving both sustainability components. This study used U.S. catfish farm data to evaluate the economic sustainability of nine commercial catfish production strategies in terms of the productivity and costs of use of major resources. Intensive production systems such as split ponds and intensively aerated ponds demonstrated greatest efficiency in the use of land, water, energy, labor, management, and capital resources. Feed use efficiency and feed conversion ratios on commercial farms showed less variation across production intensities. The productivity of resource use was greater and the costs per kg of fish lower on larger, than smaller farms for labor, management, and capital across all production strategies. Given that management, fixed capital, and salaried labor are fixed costs, the greater efficiencies measured likely reflect effects of economies of scale in resource use. Study results support recent findings that underlying economic sustainability was the key driver of progressive adoption of productivity-enhancing technologies in the U.S. catfish industry. Catfish market research is important in terms of the viability and sustainability of the catfish aquaculture industry in the U.S. Analysis of market trends, retail level price and sales volume have particular importance in the context of the industry's efforts to promote and market their products. Using retail level scanner data, this study examined the market trends of different catfish product forms. The study also investigated the factors affecting prices and sales for frozen catfish products. The present study is a pioneer in using market/city level retail scanner data to study marketing behavior of catfish products under different product categories (i.e., breaded, unbreaded and entrees). The results of the study highlight a need for a non-price competition strategy for catfish retail market. This includes several activities that attempt to provide added value or incentives to consumers, wholesalers, retailers, or other organizational customers to stimulate immediate sales. Abstract: Periodic grading and harvesting of fish has been shown to increase production of some species by removing larger fish throughout the growing season, reducing overall biomass, and increasing growth of smaller fish. Two two-year studies measured production and economic effects of the UAPB grader as compared to traditional live car grading and assessed effects of frequent harvesting and grading. Multi-batch production systems were used in both studies. In Study 1, fingerlings grew significantly better in ponds graded with the UAPB grader (0.97gd−1) as compared to the traditional live car (0.80gd−1) and resulted in 14% fewer under-sized (<0.57kg) fish sent to the processor. In Study 2, increased frequency of harvest up to four harvests a year resulted in significantly fewer over-sized fish (>1.51kg), more frequent receipt of revenue, and improved cash flow. Economic analysis showed that: (1) it was economically advantageous for catfish farmers to switch to the UAPB grader under a variety of farm size and processor dockage scenarios; and (2) increasing the frequency of harvest up to four harvests/year resulted in fewer over-sized fish, less dockage at the processing plant, improved cash flow, and more favorable economic outcomes. This paper addresses the economic trade-offs associated with stocking varying sizes of fingerlings and stockers either purchased or produced on farm in catfish growout. A mixed integer-programming model of catfish growout was developed that included seven fingerling, six stocker, and eight foodfish production activities as well as options to purchase and sell fingerlings, stockers, and foodfish. Results showed that profits are maximized on farms of 102 ha and larger by adopting a three-phase production system that includes a stocker phase. On farms smaller than 102 ha, profits are maximized by understocking 17.5-cm fingerlings in multiple-batch. The choice of stocking fingerlings or stockers depended on the efficiency of the stocker production phase; at stocker FCRs of 2.4 or above or survivals less than 40%, stocking fingerlings in multiple-batch was more profitable than the three-phase system with stockers. Additional research is needed to develop farm-level datasets of the variability in key stocker production parameters to expand this model to explicitly evaluate the effect of risk on optimal management strategies. This article developed a multi-period linear programming model to identify the optimal size of fingerling to understock to maximize multi-period returns on a catfish grow-out farm. Grow-out production alternatives included understocking three different sizes (7.6 cm, 12.7 cm, and 17.8 cm) of fingerlings in multiple-batch production at 15,000 fingerlings per hectare. Fingerlings were produced either with or without thinning at different stocking densities. Results showed that the optimal size of fingerling to understock was 12.7 cm. On-farm production of fingerlings was optimal across all farm sizes but the fingerling production technique selected varied with farm size. Models of larger farm sizes indicated that it is optimal to thin fingerlings, while for smaller farm sizes, producing fingerlings without thinning was optimal. When farm size was treated as an endogenous variable in the farmer's profit-maximizing decisions, the optimal size of a catfish farm was 404 water-ha. Sensitivity analyses suggested that net returns were sensitive to changes in the key parameters of the model (such as interest rates, feed conversion ratios, survival rates, catfish prices, harvesting costs, and the availability of operating capital), whereas the optimal size of fingerlings to understock was robust to variations in the model's parameters. Interest in sales contracts in the catfish industry increased in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a result of increased import pressures and lower product prices. The study uses survey data fitted to a probit model to examine the motivations for contracting sales, and whether farm size is an important determinant of sales contracts usage. The article concludes that Arkansas catfish farmers with large acreages and therefore large volumes of production have a high probability of utilizing contracts to handle their sales but not necessarily with privately-owned independent processors. The farmers are not motivated to engage in sales contracts by reduction in income or price risks. They are motivated by production and management issues, which appear consistent with reductions in transactions costs relating to asset specificity and quality measurement as the reason for contracting. Productivity growth of the catfish-processing sector in the United States was measured over the time period of 1986 through 2005. The analysis evaluated the efficiency with which products are produced by catfish processing plants. The Malmquist index is employed to decompose the total factor productivity into growth associated with technical efficiency change and technological progress. The relationship between Farrell's measure of technical efficiency and the Shepard's distance function provides the theoretical foundation for estimating the Malmquist production index using data envelopment analysis. The results indicate that, between 1986 and 2005, there was no technical progress or adoption of new techniques with significant impact on catfish processing. Technical efficiency change, which is associated with input use efficiency, varied with type of fish size processed. It decreased from 1985 to 1995 as the industry struggled to establish the most efficient fish size to process. Between 1995 and 2005 the fluctuation continued but at a higher mean. Technical, allocative, and cost efficiency measures of a sample of small-and medium-sized catfish farms in Chicot County, Arkansas were estimated using a weight-restricted data envelopment analysis technique. A measure of cost efficiency is used to determine operator characteristics, farm practices, and institutional support services that are likely to lead to higher levels of efficiency. Experience of the operators and extension contacts were important factors positively influencing farm level efficiency. Extension services in Chicot County generated about $5.2 million in cost savings among catfish farms or about $2,737 per contact. Importantly, higher cost efficiency of catfish farm efficiency in Chicot County, Arkansas, can be achieved by adjusting inputs used in production to optimal levels rather than by adjusting the scale of operation. Using a latent class model of structural heterogeneity in the multinomial logit framework, this study examined catfish preferences of Arkansas restaurateurs from stated choice data. The results suggest two latent classes of restaurateurs that are fairly distinct and have some degree of overlap. Managers in both classes are sensitive to prices and prefer catfish products that have mild flavor and soft texture. When preference for dryness, flavor and texture are assumed equal for both classes, one class becomes very sensitive to price but unconcerned with color while the other class becomes insensitive to price but very concerned with color. From 1993 to 1995 catfish verification trials were conducted to provide production support to the catfish industry in Arkansas. The results from these trials encouraged catfish farmers to reduce stocking rates to 15,000/ha and increase aeration rates to 2.5 hp/ha. The adoption of these farming techniques resulted in a reduction in the cost of production by 22%. From 1993 to 2002, the total economic benefit from the trials was $67 million. This study analyzed the contribution of the catfish industry to the economy of Chicot County, Arkansas, using an input-output model. The objective was to quantify the economic contribution of the industry in terms of creating new dollars, jobs, and income to the local community. Mail surveys and personal interviews were used to collect data from catfish farmers, processors and other businesses related to the catfish industry. For farmers, the information solicited included production and marketing costs, sales and employment. Out of approximately 85 questionnaires administered to catfish farms, 44 usable questionnaires were obtained for a response rate of 52%. Businesses directly related to the catfish industry provided information on employment and sales and included: processors, seiners and haulers, pond builders, tractor and equipment dealers, and feed bin manufacturers. Other businesses with indirect ties to the catfish industry included: input supply companies, banks, fertilizer and chemical companies, auto shops, electricians, and bookkeeping firms. The survey data were used to modify the IMPLAN database for Chicot County to reflect the 2001 level of catfish production, processing and services available to support the industry. This database was then used to estimate the economic impact of the industry to the county's economy. In 2001, the 85 catfish farmers in the county operated about 7,859 ha (19,500 acres). The farm-gate value of catfish production exceeded $63 million. Employment on catfish farms was approximately 510. In addition, 59 other businesses depended on the catfish industry. Results indicated that total employment created in Chicot County by businesses directly or indirectly involved with the catfish industry was 2,665 jobs. This represented 48% of all employment in Chicot County. Total tax revenue (federal, state, and local taxes) generated from both direct and indirect catfish businesses was $22 million. Combined, the total economic impact of the catfish industry in Chicot County, including direct, indirect and induced effects, was over $384 million. The output multiplier calculated for live catfish production was 6.05. Thus, each $1 of earnings by catfish farms generated $6.05 total economic activity in the Chicot County economy. If current economic difficulties should result in contractions in catfish acreage in Chicot County by 10%, unemployment rates would increase by 2%. A pond production trial was conducted to compare yield, growth, feed conversion ratio, costs, and economic risk of producing catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, fingerlings with thinning. Catfish fry were stocked at 625,000 fry/ha, thinned when they reached 5.6 cm total length, and re-stocked at either 291,500/ha, 145,750/ha, or 70,000/ha. Mean weight (g) and length (cm) at harvest decreased as a logarithmic function of stocking rate (y = 191.236 2 14.128[ln X]; R2 = 0.86 for weight and y = 46.831 2 2.781[ln X]; R2 = 0.88 for length), while yield increased linearly (y = 962 + 0.00812X; R2 = 0.57) with stocking rate. There was no significant difference in survival, feed conversion ratio, or condition of the fish due to the stocking treatments. The significantly higher yield of fingerlings at the higher densities resulted in lower costs per fingerling, per kilogram, and per centimeter. The risk analysis showed little risk of incurring cost per centimeter higher than commercial rates. Additional research is needed to quantify the economic benefit of understocking larger fingerlings in catfish growout ponds and to compare relative costs and benefits of on-farm production of various sizes of fingerlings for understocking in growout ponds.
