Abstract

Sodium‐ion batteries continue to rise in the energy storage landscape, their increasing adoption being driven by factors such as cost‐effectiveness and sustainability. As a consequence, there is a growing emphasis on the development of new electrode materials. Among these, olivine phosphates emerge as a promising family of cathode materials. However, viable synthesis routes are still lacking. In this study, cathode materials of olivine NaMn1‐xFexPO4 (x=0.34 and 1) were prepared by directly sodiating Mn1‐xFexPO4 through a solid‐state process at 300 °C. X‐ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements were employed to study their structural and electrochemical features. NaMn0.66Fe0.34PO4 exhibits two pseudo‐plateaus profile with an average potential of ~3.2 V vs. Na+/Na0 with a reversible capacity reaching 75 mAh/g at C/20 via a monophasic (de)intercalation mechanism. In parallel, the intermediate composition Na0.5Mn0.66Fe0.34PO4 could be prepared via the solid‐state reaction of NaMn0.66Fe0.34PO4 and Mn0.66Fe0.34PO4. Such a solvent‐free sodiation process not only provides a simplified preparation of NMFP, but also offers easy scalability compared to the more laborious electrochemical sodiation route, making it an interesting prospect for future industrialization. Abstract

The iron‐based polyanionic fluoro‐oxalate material, KFe(C2O4)F (KFCF), has been synthesized by hydrothermal methods. This compound shows promising reversible lithium and sodium insertion properties as a cathode material. The material delivered a first‐cycle discharge capacity of 120 mAh g−1 at ∼3.3 V (Li+/Li) and 97.4 mAh g−1 at ∼3.0 V (Na+/Na) in LIB and NIB, respectively. Stable cycling performance was observed in both cases. The involvement of reversible Fe2+/Fe3+ redox was confirmed by ex‐situ Mössbauer spectroscopy supported by first‐principles calculations. This study reveals promising performance from a mixed oxalate‐fluoride based polyanionic material thereby opening up further possibilities for materials discovery in the design of new electrode materials. Abstract

A new mixed anion compound, Na2Fe(C2O4)F2, has been prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. The crystal structure exhibits infinite chains of corner-linked FeII-centered octahedra, with coordination composed of both oxalate and fluoride ligands. This compound exhibits promising reversible lithium and sodium insertion. On extended cycling, Na2Fe(C2O4)F2 is capable of reversibly inserting 0.67 Li+ or 0.56 Na+ per formula unit up to 50 cycles at the average discharge voltages of 3.3 and 3.0 V, respectively. This represents arguably the best performance as a prospective cathode material so far observed among oxalates and is comparable to many known iron phosphate-based cathode materials. The article presents the authors' insights on their study which explored iron (Fe)/nitrogen (N)/carbon (C) cathode catalysts' optimized synthesis for polymer-electrolyte-membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The authors mention their investigation concerning the 1,10-phenanthroline's replacement with 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-striazine (TPTZ). The authors add that their results suggest cation exchange's detrimental effect on the fuel-cell performance of catalysts based on Fe.

Abstract

The growing demand for advanced lithium-ion batteries calls for the continued development of high-performance positive electrode materials. Polyoxyanion compounds are receiving considerable interest as alternative cathodes to conventional oxides due to their advantages in cost, safety and environmental friendliness. However, polyanionic cathodes reported so far rely heavily upon transition-metal redox reactions for lithium transfer. Here we show a polyanionic insertion material, Li2Fe(C2O4)2, in which in addition to iron redox activity, the oxalate group itself also shows redox behavior enabling reversible charge/discharge and high capacity without gas evolution. The current study gives oxalate a role as a family of cathode materials and suggests a direction for the identification and design of electrode materials with polyanionic frameworks. Polyoxyanion compounds are alternative cathodes to conventional oxides, but their reliance on the transition metal redox limits the performance. Here the authors report an oxalate system which possesses additional polyanionic redox reactivity, suggesting a new direction for cathode materials design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increasing concerns regarding the sustainability of lithium sources, due to their limited availability and consequent expected price increase, have raised awareness of the importance of developing alternative energy-storage candidates that can sustain the ever-growing energy demand. Furthermore, limitations on the availability of the transition metals used in the manufacturing of cathode materials, together with questionable mining practices, are driving development towards more sustainable elements. Given the uniformly high abundance and cost-effectiveness of sodium, as well as its very suitable redox potential (close to that of lithium), sodium-ion battery technology offers tremendous potential to be a counterpart to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in different application scenarios, such as stationary energy storage and low-cost vehicles. This potential is reflected by the major investments that are being made by industry in a wide variety of markets and in diverse material combinations. Despite the associated advantages of being a drop-in replacement for LIBs, there are remarkable differences in the physicochemical properties between sodium and lithium that give rise to different behaviours, for example, different coordination preferences in compounds, desolvation energies, or solubility of the solid–electrolyte interphase inorganic salt components. This demands a more detailed study of the underlying physical and chemical processes occurring in sodium-ion batteries and allows great scope for groundbreaking advances in the field, from lab-scale to scale-up. This roadmap provides an extensive review by experts in academia and industry of the current state of the art in 2021 and the different research directions and strategies currently underway to improve the performance of sodium-ion batteries. The aim is to provide an opinion with respect to the current challenges and opportunities, from the fundamental properties to the practical applications of this technology.

Increasing concerns regarding the sustainability of lithium sources, due to their limited availability and consequent expected price increase, have raised awareness of the importance of developing alternative energy-storage candidates that can sustain the ever-growing energy demand. Furthermore, limitations on the availability of the transition metals used in the manufacturing of cathode materials, together with questionable mining practices, are driving development towards more sustainable elements. Given the uniformly high abundance and cost-effectiveness of sodium, as well as its very suitable redox potential (close to that of lithium), sodium-ion battery technology offers tremendous potential to be a counterpart to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in different application scenarios, such as stationary energy storage and low-cost vehicles. This potential is reflected by the major investments that are being made by industry in a wide variety of markets and in diverse material combinations. Despite the associated advantages of being a drop-in replacement for LIBs, there are remarkable differences in the physicochemical properties between sodium and lithium that give rise to different behaviours, for example, different coordination preferences in compounds, desolvation energies, or solubility of the solid–electrolyte interphase inorganic salt components. This demands a more detailed study of the underlying physical and chemical processes occurring in sodium-ion batteries and allows great scope for groundbreaking advances in the field, from lab-scale to scale-up. This roadmap provides an extensive review by experts in academia and industry of the current state of the art in 2021 and the different research directions and strategies currently underway to improve the performance of sodium-ion batteries. The aim is to provide an opinion with respect to the current challenges and opportunities, from the fundamental properties to the practical applications of this technology.

Abstract

• Strategy of activating low-spin iron within Prussian blue is put forward. • Calcinated Prussian blue cathode shows prolonged high-voltage plateau. • Charges transfer from high-spin iron to low-spin iron, leading to spin transition. • Narrow bandgap and charge-accumulated low-spin iron contribute to better performance. Prussian blue (PB) and its analogues have garnered considerable attention due to their spacious open framework, substantial specific capacity, facile synthesis protocol and cost-effectiveness as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Nonetheless, the incomplete electrochemical reaction of low-spin (LS) Fe often results in suboptimal practical specific capacity and diminished specific energy. In this study, a calcination strategy is put forward and successfully activates LS-Fe centers within PB, which exhibits a prolonged high-voltage plateau when employed as a cathode material for SIBs. Notably, PB with LS-Fe activated (denoted as PB-325) contributes with a specific capacity of 65 and 62 mAh/g during the first and fifth charge–discharge cycles, respectively, surpassing those of the pristine material. Comprehensive investigations involving operando 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, ex situ soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations unveil a charge transfer-induced spin transition phenomenon occurring during the electrochemical reaction process, which involves transfer of charges from HS-Fe to LS-Fe. The intrinsic narrower bandgap and charge-accumulated LS-Fe species both contribute to enhanced reactivity, especially in LS-Fe site, thus leading to increased specific capacity within the high-voltage range and improving the performance of PB-325. This study provides an effective and simple strategy to activate LS-Fe, and deepens the understanding of the mechanisms of high-performance PB cathodes for SIBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Na 2 FePO 4 F/CNT composite investigated in this work was prepared by an optimized and easily scalable spray-drying process, resulting in an excellent initial discharge specific capacity of 123 mAh/g at C/15 when cycled against sodium. This NFPF/CNT composite was able to intercalate potassium ions reversibly with a promising specific capacity of 80 mAh/g after optimization of the electrolyte composition. Electrochemical desodiation was the key factor to reach outstanding performance as a cathode material in K-ion batteries, with the NaKFePO 4 F/CNT composite leading to a stable capacity of 114 mAh/g at C/15 rate (99% of the theoretical capacity), one of the highest capacity values reported for K-ion technology. Abstract

The discovery of new cathode materials for lithium batteries is a slow process yet crucial task to develop advanced LIBs, and almost all known commercial cathode materials are still based on those identified in the 1990s. Thus, searching for new cathode materials is crucial for increasing the performance of Lithium batteries especially in the spacecraft industry as storage devices used in this domain need to be as small and light as possible to ease their integration in the spacecraft as well as minimizing the energy required for take-off. Conversion materials such as iron trifluoride (FeF 3) are of particular interest as they exhibit high specific capacity (237 mAh.g−1 in intercalation for anhydrous FeF 3 versus 200 mAh.g−1 for typical NCA or NMC) and high voltage. This study focuses on using innovative gaseous fluorination with F 2 gas to prepare anhydrous FeF 3 while favoring the formation of a porous structure to maximize electrochemical performances. We were able to tune the crystalline structure, composition, and morphology of the fluorination product obtained by selecting the precursor as well as tailoring the fluorination treatment. After a complete electrochemical characterization of all fluorination products obtained, FeSi 2 appeared as the best precursor to maximize the performances of FeF 3 in lithium batteries. Electrochemical tests were performed on our homemade FeF 3 and the results were compared to a commercial product, namely NCA. Both cells were cycled at a current density of C/10, and a DoD of 80%. Those conditions were chosen because they are close to those found in geostationary satellites batteries. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that anhydrous FeF 3 synthesized by gaseous fluorination exhibits an increased performance compared to NCA when these 2 materials are used as a cathode material in lithium batteries on a short-term cycling analysis. • Iron trifluorides from gaseous fluorination of various precursors. • Tunable macroporosities and crystalline phases of FeF 3. • Diffusion coefficient of Li+ in between 10−9 and 10−11 cm2/s. • Electrochemical cycling in geostationary conditions. Abstract

Tapia-Ruiz, Nuria et al., Increasing concerns regarding the sustainability of lithium sources, due to their limited availability and consequent expected price increase, have raised awareness of the importance of developing alternative energy-storage candidates that can sustain the ever-growing energy demand. Furthermore, limitations on the availability of the transition metals used in the manufacturing of cathode materials, together with questionable mining practices, are driving development towards more sustainable elements. Given the uniformly high abundance and cost-effectiveness of sodium, as well as its very suitable redox potential (close to that of lithium), sodium-ion battery technology offers tremendous potential to be a counterpart to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in different application scenarios, such as stationary energy storage and low-cost vehicles. This potential is reflected by the major investments that are being made by industry in a wide variety of markets and in diverse material combinations. Despite the associated advantages of being a drop-in replacement for LIBs, there are remarkable differences in the physicochemical properties between sodium and lithium that give rise to different behaviours, for example, different coordination preferences in compounds, desolvation energies, or solubility of the solid–electrolyte interphase inorganic salt components. This demands a more detailed study of the underlying physical and chemical processes occurring in sodium-ion batteries and allows great scope for groundbreaking advances in the field, from lab-scale to scale-up. This roadmap provides an extensive review by experts in academia and industry of the current state of the art in 2021 and the different research directions and strategies currently underway to improve the performance of sodium-ion batteries. Abstract

Thermal and structural stabilities of the delithiated positive electrode material LixCo2/3Ni1/6Mn1/6O2were studied by X-ray diffraction, magnetic and thermogravimetric analysis. In the opposite to the classical electrode materials LiNiO2 and LiCoO2, the structural symmetry (S.G. R-3 m) of the starting material LiCo2/3Ni1/6Mn1/6O2 is preserved during the electrochemical cycling with a small variation of the unit cell parameters. Squid measurements evidenced that practically no Ni2+ ions were present in the lithium slab even after the lithium extraction process. For the thermal stability, the highly oxidized phase Li0.3Co2/3Ni1/6Mn1/6O2 was tested. This delithiated phase undergoes only 5.16% weight loss after heating up to 600 °C. This weight loss has no effect on the structure symmetry as the starting α-NaFeO2 type structure was preserved during the thermal treatment. The obtained results coupled to the excellent electrochemical features of LiCo2/3Ni1/6Mn1/6O2clearly showits ability to compete with the commercialized cathode materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
