The article presents information on a study which investigated the development of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay based on the C18L gene (encoding ankyrin repeat protein) and a duplex PCR based on the C18L and DNA polymerase genes for the diagnosis of camelpox. It details the cell culture-adapted camelpox virus (CMLV) and other poxviruses used in the study. It explores oligonucleotide primers along with PCR conditions standardized for different set of primers. It discusses the successful use of both PCR assays for the direct detection and differentiation of CMLV from other orthopoxviruses, capripoxviruses, and parapoxviruses in both cell culture samples and clinical material
