The article presents a study which examines the population trends and patterns in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) as illustrated by data from the October 2005 census. It evaluates the national and regional total populations, including nationality composition, migration and the trends in urbanization, from the war-torn republic. The results of the Soviet census in the region, particularly the difference of population in the NKR from the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast of Azerbaijan, are discussed.

The article presents the result of a study on the first post-Soviet census of Armenia. The study examines the national and regional trends in Armenia's urban and rural population as well as the country's urbanization on the basis of the 2001 census data. The country experienced a sharp decline in population in the period 1989-2001, despite the continued natural increase because of net emigration.

The article reports on national and regional population trends in Ukraine. In late 22001, Ukraine, which is by far and away the second populous country of the former Soviet Union (FSU), conducted its first population census in the post-Soviet period. Data by oblast from the census of Ukraine, conducted December 5, 2001, are published for the total, urban, and rural populations as well as the for major nationalities of the oblasts. Whereas general national and regional total, urban, and rural population data are based on and presented for both the de facto and de jure concepts.

This paper describes and analyzes the chief national and regional population trends to emerge in Azerbaijan between 1989, the year of the last Soviet Union census, and 1999, Focus is on the national total, urban, and rural population and urbanization trends, and especially to trends in such characteristics among the more than 60 rayons. In addition, fertility, mortality, natural increase (fertility minus mortality), migration, and nationality patterns, as well as the impact of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, are also addressed when appropriate, particularly with regard to their impact on those more general trends.

In this study we attempt to describe and to analyze broadly urbanization in Russia and the USSR during the present century. To measure urbanization data were gathered from Russian, Soviet, and East European censuses according to a comparable definition and comparable territorial units. Despite very great population losses owing to war and famine in this century, urbanization increased at a remarkable rate, even greater than that of the United States. Between 1897 and 1959, the urbanization process was especially dynamic in four regions--Ural, Central, West Siberia, and Donetsk-Dnepr--and, in general, the east experienced a greater increase than the west. Since 1959, however, this latter trend has been reversed. Our analysis demonstrates that this urbanization was, in general, related to three complexly interrelated factors-industrialization, transportation accessibility, and in-migration.
