In modeling the characteristics of a cartridge valve with traditional methods, it is commonly required to determine the value of flow area and other coefficients such as discharge coefficient and jet angle, etc. However, these parameters often rely heavily on empirical or experimental data and often involve some uncertainties, especially with the variation of the spool displacement (valve opening). To avoid these uncertainties, this paper proposes a modeling method which calculates spool force and flow rate directly through the distribution of fluid field. Transient 3D flow field simulation with dynamic mesh technique is conducted using commercial code FLUENT, and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) method is introduced to simplify fluid field data. The results showed that the POD method can capture the main features of the fluid field while significantly reducing the amount of data. With reconstructed pressure field and velocity field, spool force and flow rate can be calculated directly without using traditional formulas which contain uncertain coefficients. Valve characteristics calculated with this method agree with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and experimental data well, which confirms the validity and effectiveness of this method. In this paper, a numerical model describing the heat transfer and air flow inside and outside the casing of the permanent magnet brushless direct current (PM BLDC) motor is presented. In the model, a conjugate heat transfer including the heat conduction with heat sources in windings, magnets, bearings, natural and forced convection and radiation phenomena within internal and external air domain were analysed. The complex geometrical model included windings, a magnet circuit, a rotor with neodymium magnets, a PCB electronic plate, plastic covers, internal air between solid parts as well as a portion of the external air. The validation process of the developed model was realised on the basis of the velocity and temperature fields. The experimental data were recorded by 7 constant temperature anemometers at 4 levels above the motor housing, Laser Doppler Anemometry sensors in two axes inside the rear portion of the motor and 25 thermocouples fixed inside and outside the motor. The experimental and numerical tests were performed for 4 motor loadings and 3 rotational speeds. The average temperature error for the internal point was of 9 K, while that of the external points was of 2 K. The velocity field was very well predicted close to the housing wall in terms of horizontal and vertical components. A slightly worse agreement was found for the vertical component, especially in the vicinity of the shaft. The results were consistent for all the considered motor loadings and rotational speeds. The project reported in this paper used CFD as a tool to investigate the effect of multi-pass on the shell side heat transfer of a heat exchanger system. The heat exchanger system is equipped with six vertical thermosyphons transferring thermal energy from a heat source (air) to a heat sink (water). The CFD model has been experimentally validated. The two-phase change processes inside the thermosyphons were not modelled during the simulation. Instead, the thermosyphons were treated as solid rods with a constant thermal conductivity, which was calculated theoretically by applying the thermal resistance analogy with the aid of convection, boiling and condensation correlations found in the literature. The heat source consists of multiple air passes on the evaporator section of the thermosyphons and two water passes on the condenser section. Three different arrangements on the evaporator section were investigated with one, two or three shell passes and the thermal performance compared for the three configurations. The investigation was performed at various inlet conditions: a range of air inlet temperatures (100, 150, 200 and 250 °C) and mass flow rates (0.05, 0.08, 0.11 and 0.14 kg/s). The water inlet conditions were kept constant (a temperature of 15 °C and a mass flow rate of 0.08 kg/s). The overall rate of heat transfer was obtained by both CFD and a theoretical model, and the results lay within 15% of the experimental data. The numerical predictions demonstrated that the k − ε Realizable turbulence model is a reliable tool for predicting heat transfer and fluid flow in such heat exchangers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High temperature heat pipes offer an efficient way of heat removal in nuclear reactors under both normal operation and postulated accidental scenarios. Heat pipes with sodium as a working fluid has been proposed to be used in Compact High Temperature Reactor (CHTR), 233 U-Thorium fuelled reactor being designed to operate at 1000 °C. High temperature heat pipes can also be used for decay heat removal from dump tanks of molten salt breeder reactor and heat removal from first wall of fusion reactors. High temperature heat pipes of special construction can also be used for heat removal from core without use of coolant. Thus, reliable and long term operation of heat pipes is essential for the safe working of the reactor. In this respect, computer codes have been developed for design and simulation of high temperature heat pipes. To assist in the design stages, codes have been developed, which incorporate performance limits based on correlations and having a user friendly GUI. For system level studies, simplified heat transfer model is developed using a FEM model. For a detailed study of the heat pipe, the vapour flow behavior and interface evaporation condensation phenomena using a full CFD analysis is essential. This has been done by using a commercial CFD code by incorporating user defined functions (UDFs) which address the saturated nature of the vapour phase and the vapour wick interface conditions. A three dimensional transient numerical model has been developed to predict the vapour core, wall temperatures, vapour pressure, and vapour velocity in the screen mesh wick of sodium heat pipe. The results have been compared using a sodium heat pipe developed in-house. The paper presents key assumptions of the mathematical model which describes heat and mass transfer phenomena in a solar sewage drying process, as well as techniques used for solving this model with the Fluent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. Special attention was paid to implementation of boundary conditions on the sludge surface, which is a physical boundary between the gaseous phase -- air, and solid phase -- dried matter. Those conditions allow to model heat and mass transfer between the media during first and second drying stages. Selection of the computational geometry is also discussed -- it is a fragment of the entire drying facility. Selected modelling results are presented in the final part of the paper. The paper is concerned with an important issue from the field of thermoacoustics -- the numerical modelling of the flow field in the thermoacoustic engine. The presented way of modelling is based on the solution to fundamental fluid mechanics equations that govern the flow of compressible, viscous, and heat-transferring gas. Nanofluids have gained significant attention in recent years due their great potential for heat transfer enhancement . The heat transfer of nanofluids can be numerically studied using a single-phase or two-phase approaches. The first assumes that the fluid phase and nanoparticles are in thermal equilibrium and move with the same velocity, while the second requires more computational effort but provides the possibility of understanding the behavior of both fluid phase and solid particles in the heat transfer mechanism. This paper reviews various computational approaches to predict fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids. The characteristics of single-phase and two-phase (volume of fluid, mixture, Eulerian–Lagrangian and Eulerian–Eulerian) approaches have been analyzed and discussed systematically. The mathematical model has been developed to describe the hydrodynamics of supercritical fluid flow in the reactor, heat, and mass transfer during drying processes for aerogels production. The model is based on the provisions of continuum mechanics, and Ansys Fluent is used for its calculation. In this research, the medium inside the reactor is considered as homogeneous two-component compressible viscous fluid, which is described by Peng–Robinson equation of state. In this paper we consider the model of supercritical drying process. A considerable part of the mathematical model is description of the fluid flow inside the porous body (aerogel), where only diffusive transport of substance occurs. The model is used to scale-up the supercritical drying process; the reactor geometry and process parameters optimization in order to intensify the production process, achieve desired properties of aerogels. Abstract: In this paper, the improved heat flux partitioning model based on first principal models of the underlying physics in determining the active nucleation site density, bubble size and bubble frequency is evaluated for subcooled flow boiling in vertical heated channels at low pressures. Salient features of this model include the fractal approach in determining the active nucleation site density, the force balance model in determining bubble diameters at sliding and lift-off as well as bubble frequency through the consideration of growth and waiting times and the additional heat flux at the heated wall due to surface quenching of sliding bubbles. Model predictions, covering a wide range of different mass and heat fluxes and inlet subcooling temperatures, are compared against local and axial measurements. In comparison to the measured data and selected combinations of empirical correlations such as described in Part 1, the current model predictions clearly demonstrate the effect of the subcooling effect on the activation of nucleation sites at the heated wall. The selected combinations of empirical correlations consistently under-estimate the wall superheat temperature while the current model yields predictions that agree very well with experimentally measured temperatures. Bubble sliding along the heat wall and its influence on heat partitioning and surface quenching heat flux has been ascertained to play an important role during the subcooled flow boiling process. Abstract: Combustion of pulverized coal in oxy-combustion technology is one of the effective ways to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The process of transition from conventional combustion in air to the oxy-combustion technology, however, requires a thorough investigations of the phenomena occurring during the combustion process, that can be greatly supported by numerical modeling. The paper presents the results of numerical simulations of pulverized coal combustion process in swirl burner using RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations) and LES (large Eddy simulation) methods for turbulent flow. Numerical simulations have been performed for the oxyfuel test facility located at the Institute of Heat and Mass Transfer at RWTH Aachen University. Detailed analysis of the flow field inside the combustion chamber for cold flow and for the flow with combustion using different numerical methods for turbulent flows have been done. Comparison of the air and oxy-coal combustion process for pulverized coal shows significant differences in temperature, especially close to the burner exit. Abstract: In the present paper, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling study was performed for the combustion of the brown coal in a large-scale tangentially-fired furnace (550MW) under different operating conditions. The AVL Fire CFD code has been used to model the combustion processes. The mathematical models of coal combustion with the appropriate kinetic parameters were written and incorporated to the code as user defined functions. These models consist of pulverised coal (PC) devolatilization, char burnout, and heat and mass transfer. The simulation of the PC combustion was carried out using multi-step reaction chemistry mechanisms. The level of confidence of this numerical model was based on the previous validations of the lignite combustion in a lab-scale furnace, as well as the validation parameters of the present furnace at the standard existing conditions in terms of temperature values and species concentrations. Performance of the boiler under ten different operating conditions was investigated. The strategy of operation schemes for the first six combustion scenarios were based on the change of the out-of-service (turned off) burners under full load operation, while the rest cases were carried out at 20% lower and 20% higher loads than the standard operating conditions. The validated model was used to perform the following investigation parameters: furnace gas temperatures, species concentrations (O2, CO and CO2), velocity distributions, and char consumption. The predictions demonstrated that there are good temperature distributions in the furnace when the turned off burners are set in the opposite direction under full load operation. For higher aerodynamic effect, the numerical results showed improvements on the combustion characteristics in terms of species concentrations and char burnout rates in comparison with the standard operating case. The findings of this study provide good information to optimize the operations of the utility tangentially coal-fired boiler with less emission. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The co-firing of pulverised coal/biomass in power generation plants is receiving considerable attention due to its influence in reducing all forms of emissions. Unlike coal, milled biomass, such as straw, may contain large particles of different sizes and shapes, which can have an impact on the combustion characteristics and emissions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is often used to understand the influence of large biomass particles in a furnace. However, most CFD sub-models simplify heat transfer effects within the particles during combustion. In this paper a particle heat-up model, which considers the influence of thermal gradients within large biomass particles, is applied to a co-firing coal/biomass simulation in a tangentially fired furnace with up to 12% thermal biomass loading. Different sizes of biomass particles of non-spherical shape and their impact on the combustion behavior have been investigated. The influence of the particle size and shape distribution on the combustion characteristics and emissions was found to be significant. Abstract: In this paper, convective heat transfer effect on the non-Newtonian nanofluid flow in the horizontal tube with constant heat flux was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). For this purpose, non-Newtonian nanofluid containing Al2O3 and Xanthan aqueous solution as a liquid single phase with two average particle sizes of 45 and 150nm and four particle concentrations of 1, 2, 4 and 6wt.% and two concentrations of Xanthan aqueous solutions (0.6,1.0wt.%) were used. Effect of particle size and concentration of Xanthan solution on convective heat transfer coefficient was investigated in different Reynolds numbers (500< Re <2500) for various axial locations of tube. The results showed that heat transfer coefficient and Nu number of non-Newtonian nanofluid increased with increasing concentration of Xanthan solution. By applying the modeling results, an equation was obtained for Nusselt number prediction using the dimensionless numbers. Abstract: The wave-finned flat tube heat exchangers are widely used in air-cooled condensers of a power plant. Due to the oblique arrangement of the wavy fins on the A-frame tube bundles of the air-cooled condenser, the finned tube is prone to fouling thus the thermo-flow performances of air-cooled condensers are likely to become deteriorated. A new configuration of wave-finned flat tube, in which the fin surface rotates to be perpendicular, is proposed in this paper to prevent the fouling from gathering on the finned tube. The physical and mathematical models for the fluid and heat flows of the cooling air through the present and proposed wave-finned flat tube bundles are setup, and the thermo-flow characteristics are compared. For the proposed finned tube, the influences of the fin pitch, height and the Reynolds number on the flow and heat transfer performances are investigated, and the correlations of the friction factor and Nusselt number are recommended. The results show that the buoyancy effect should be taken into account for the correlation of the friction factor at low Reynolds numbers, but this buoyancy force can be ignored for the Nusselt number. One of the important outputs of the heat conduction model is the heat loss flux from steel melt to different heat transfer regions of a ladle. These papers present examples of the predicted heat loss fluxes to different heat transfer regions of mid-aged 105-tonne steel ladles lined with alumina and spinel as working refractory in walls. Abstract: Continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis processes are of interest for the manufacture of nanoparticle metal oxides. In such processes, nanoparticle nuclei (in a slurry) which are initially formed, may continue to grow and agglomerate to generate larger particles as they pass through the synthesis apparatus. These processes can widen the size distribution and also affect the ultimate particle shape in the recovered product. Therefore, fast cooling or quenching the initial nanoparticle slurry using a highly efficient heat exchanger may minimise or stop further crystallisation/agglomeration processes. This may be achieved by optimising the design of the heat exchanger based on detailed examination of flow patterns and heat transfer profiles using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling approach. The predicted flow and heat transfer patterns in the heat exchanger can also provide detailed information for the identification of any heat transfer deterioration or hot spots where further reactions may occur. This paper employs a CFD modelling approach to simulate the heat transfer processes in a tubular heat exchanger of a continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis system and also to examine the effect of various operating conditions, including inlet temperature and flowrate of hot slurry and inlet flowrate of cooling water, on the fluid and thermal features in the heat exchanger. Abstract: The power densities present within a fusion device and its heating systems require the use of high heat flux (HHF) devices to sustain power densities >10MW/m2 in steady state. One such device, known as the Hypervapotron, uses internal water cooling along with a series of fins and cavities perpendicular to the flow to maximise the heat transfer capability. UKAEA, in collaboration with Cranfield University, have initiated a study whereby computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software will be used to predict the variation of heat transfer coefficients (HTC) throughout the Hypervapotron, allowing accurate calculations of both thermal and thermo-mechanical performance. In this paper, the first steps in this process are presented. Abstract: An improved understanding of the heat transfer in materials consisting of two layers (splat and substrate) is essential for many industrial applications. We are interested in the deposition, rapid cooling and solidification of metal droplets (known as splats) brought into contact with a cold substrate. We therefore need to understand the temperature history in both the splat and the substrate, including phase change phenomena. A new model of the thermal contact resistance based on a random distribution of contact points, rather than the uniform distribution commonly used, is presented in this paper. Phase change has been also considered, using the enthalpy-porosity formulation. Simulations have been conducted with the commercial package CFX-4. The computational results for the cooling rate of the splat obtained using the random contact distribution model are in good agreement with available experimental results. In addition, results obtained from the random model provide information on the inhomogeneity affecting the temperature at the interface between the splat and the substrate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
