Abstract

Dans le contexte sahélien, les études menées depuis une vingtaine d'années montrent que les effets conjoints du changement climatique et des activités humaines sur les états de surface sont à l'origine d'un "paradoxe hydrologique". On observe, en effet, depuis les années 1970 que sur certains bassins versants de cette région les coefficients d'écoulement ont très fortement augmenté, entraînant parfois des écoulements plus importants qu'auparavant, en dépit d'une diminution marquée de la pluviométrie régionale. Ces modifications de la relation pluie-débit nécessitent de nouvelles approches permettant de prendre en compte conjointement la variabilité climatique et la dimension anthropique dans la modélisation hydrologique de ces bassins. Le travail mené a eu pour objectif d'intégrer dans un modèle hydrologique une composante environnementale et humaine. Cette donnée est reliée à des indicateurs de pression anthropique et climatique que sont les états de surface. Ces états conditionnent la répartition de la pluie en infiltration, évapotrans-piration et écoulement. Ces indicateurs sont déterminés à partir d'images satellites LANDSAT. Pour calculer l'évolution annuelle des états de surface et des coefficients d'écoulement associés, on propose une méthodologie qui relie les différentes classes d'états de surface à l'évolution de la population. Les résultats des simulations sur un bassin de plus de 20 000 km2 au Burkina Faso montrent des améliorations très significatives dans les performances du modèle quand on utilise cette composante environnementale et humaine.

Abstract

International audience; The Mediterranean region is considered as a hot spot of climate change, where precipitation islikely to decrease with the rise of temperature. These changes could have a strong effect in north Africa andnotably in Morocco where the agricultural sector is of high importance and very dependent on surface waterresources. Therefore, there is a need to quantify the possible climate change impacts on water resources ofthis region. The most common approach to conduct hydrological impact studies of climate change is to runhydrological models with climate scenarios, usually provided by climate model outputs downscaled to thecatchment of interest. In the present study an ensemble of six regional climate model (RCM) simulationsfrom the European project ENSEMBLES at a 25 km resolution is considered to evaluate the climate changeimpacts on the inflows of the sixth largest dam located in northern Morocco. A quantile perturbation methodis used to generate future temperature and precipitation series under the emission scenario A1B. The GR4Jhydrological model is first calibrated on different climatic conditions to assess the temporal transferability ofits parameters and then run with the perturbed temperature and precipitation series. The ensemble approachallows the projection uncertainties to be evaluated from the spread in the individual RCM simulations. AllRCM simulations project a decrease in surface water resources during the extended winter season(November to May), from –9% to –54% depending on the model.

Abstract

International audience; The Chao Lake, located in the Yangtze basin, is the fifth largest freshwater lake in China. The lake catchment (9130 km2 ) includes the city of Hefei (3.5 million inhabitants) and a large extent of paddy fields and rural areas. The Fengle River is a tributary of the Chao Lake. It is currently subject to flood risks and inundation issues. Many changes are expected in land use and agricultural practices in the future, due to the tourist appeal of the Chao Lake shore and the fast expansion of the city of Hefei. Climate changes are also expected in this region, with a high impact on the rainfall regime. The consequences of all these changes on flood occurrence and magnitude are a major issue for the economic development of the area and tools are needed to carry out such an analysis. Here, a methodology is proposed for investigating the potential impact of rainfall regime change on flood duration and frequencies in the future. The methodology consists of three steps: first from a literature review scenarios of changes in precipitation are identified and used to build future series of daily rainfall; secondly, future daily discharges are simulated using a distributed hydrological model (MERCEDES) previously calibrated on current rainfall–discharge data; finally the current vs future discharge dynamics are characterized in terms of flood frequencies from discharge–duration–frequency curves. The methodology is implemented on the Fengle River, for which 20 years of daily discharges (Taoxi station), daily rainfall (eight stations), temperature and evapotranspiration (Hefei weather station) are available.

Abstract

International audience; The Ebro (Spain) and the Herault (France) are contrasting catchments representative of the Mediterranean context. Simultaneous increases of population, irrigated areas and industrial development observed in the recent past associated with future climate change indicators shows the necessity of considering the capacity of these catchments to satisfy water demand. This evaluation requires knowledge of the spatiotemporal dynamics of water demands and their main drivers. This paper thus presents a conceptual modelling framework to estimate water demand and its evolution. The Ebro basin is dominated by agricultural water demand, which has been increasing, mostly due to the expansion of irrigated areas. In the Herault basin, domestic demand has greatly increased since the 1970s. Future water demand was assessed by the 2050 horizon under climatic and socio-economic scenarios. Results show that water demand should keep increasing notably for irrigation requirements. This work was a first step to analyse the capacity of each hydro-system to satisfy current and future water demands.
