Based on the relationship between average local ionization energy I ̄ (r) and average local electron affinity A ̄ (r) with the electronic Fukui functions, i.e., f−(r) and f+(r), respectively, in this paper, we establish a connection between nuclear and electronic Fukui functions beyond frontier molecular orbitals. As a consequence of this connection, we obtain expressions of average nuclear Fukui functions interpreted as a variation of average nucleophilicity or electrophilicity (weighted by the electronic orbital Fukui functions) with respect to nuclear displacements, which goes beyond the highest occupied molecular orbital/or lowest unoccupied molecular orbital consideration. Furthermore, from this connection and considering the frontier molecular orbital approximation, we derive expressions of nuclear Fukui functions in terms of the atom-condensed electronic Fukui functions, which imply a locality in the chemical reactivity and could be used to study the variation of local nucleophilicity or electrophilicity with respect to nuclear displacements. Finally, this new way to interpret the nuclear Fukui function could be useful in the future to study the chemical reactivity related to molecular vibrations, internal rotations, bond dissociation, chemical reaction along the model of reaction coordinate, and so on. Using the reaction electronic flux, a new tool aimed at identifying and characterizing the electronic activity taking place during a chemical process, the chelotropic and cycloaddition reactions of 1,3-butadiene with sulfur dioxide are revisited. The mechanisms of both reactions were studied within the framework of the reaction force analysis; the electronic activity determined through the reaction electronic flux was rationalized in terms of chemical events, bond forming or breaking processes, and polarization and transfer effects localized on the reactants species. The results show interesting features and differences between both the mechanisms; while the chelotropic path is driven by through space electrostatic interactions, the cycloaddition reaction is mainly driven by through bond electronic activity. The relation between these findings and the experimentally found kinetic (cycloaddition) and thermodynamic (chelotropic reaction) control is discussed. Abstract: We have explored the relationships between the reaction force F(ξ), the reaction force constant κ(ξ) and the projected force constants of the intramolecular proton transfer HO−Nsp="0.25" />→OSH along the intrinsic reaction coordinate ξ. The structural changes and energetics associated with the reaction are analyzed in terms of the three regions defined by F(ξ): reactant, transition and product. The significance of the similarity between κ(ξ) and the variation of the force constant associated to the reaction coordinate mode, kξ (ξ), is discussed in detail. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Ab initio SCF and DFT(B3LYP) calculations are performed with 6-311G** basis sets for obtaining insights into molecular internal rotations in HXNX (X=O,S), different vibrational modes in water and double proton transfer reaction in (HONO) 2 . While chemical reactivity is analyzed in terms of the profile of the global reactivity parameters, such as energy, chemical potential, hardness, polarizability, molecular valency and electrophilicity indices, the site selectivity is understood through the variations in local descriptors, such as the Fukui function and atomic valency. Principles of maximum hardness and molecular valency and the minimum polarizability principle are found to be valid in almost all cases. Rotational isomerization reactions can be better characterized by making use of the maximum hardness principle along with Hammond's postulate. Extremum points in electrophilicity during internal rotations, vibrations and chemical reaction can be located from those of chemical potential and hardness.
