Finding a way for mitigating climate change is one of the main challenges of our generation. Sorption-enhanced gasification (SEG) is a process by which syngas as an important intermediate for the synthesis of e.g., dimethyl ether (DME), bio-synthetic natural gas (SNG) and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) products or hydrogen can be produced by using biomass as feedstock. It can, therefore, contribute to a replacement for fossil fuels to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. SEG is an indirect gasification process that is operated in a dual-fluidized bed (DFB) reactor. By the use of a CO2-active sorbent as bed material, CO2 that is produced during gasification is directly captured. The resulting enhancement of the water-gas shift reaction enables the production of a syngas with high hydrogen content and adjustable H2/CO/CO2-ratio. Tests were conducted in a 200 kW DFB pilot-scale facility under industrially relevant conditions to analyze the influence of gasification temperature, steam to carbon (S/C) ratio and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) on the syngas production, using wood pellets as feedstock and limestone as bed material. Results revealed a strong dependency of the syngas composition on the gasification temperature in terms of permanent gases, light hydrocarbons and tars. Also, S/C ratio and WHSV are parameters that can contribute to adjusting the syngas properties in such a way that it is optimized for a specific downstream synthesis process., H2020 European Research Council

Azulene bilden mit Tetracyanoathylcn im Molverhältnis 1 : 1 gut kristallisierende π-Komplexe, die sich in organischen Lösungsmitteln mit tiefblauer Farbe lösen (2.4.6.8-Tetramethylazulen-Komplex: λmax = 680 mμ, log ε = 3,422) und sich an Aluminiumoxyd wieder in die Komponenten zerlegen lassen.

3-(Dimethylamino)prop-2-yn-1-al (1) reacts with an equimolar quantity of HCl in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran at 0 °C to give the reactive aldehyde (2), R = Cl [¹], which rearranges during isolation to form isomer-free[²] trans-3-chloro-N,N-dimethylacrylamide (3a), R = Cl (yield 80 %) [³].

A completely planar, delocalized 14π-electron system which does not contain cyclically conjugated substructures characterizes the title compound (2). A productive synthesis of the 1,2-bis(tert-butylcyclopentadienyl)ethane (1) enabled the construction of the novel non-benzenoid aromatic hydrocarbon (2). which also contains one of the few planar eight-membered rings.

With regard to the nature of their bonding and reactivity, fulvenes occupy a position intermediate between their benzenoid isomers and the olefins. The chemical and physical behavior of the fulvenes is determined either by the diene character of the cross-conjugated system or by the cylic conjugation in the five-membered ring, depending on the type of substituent at the exocyclic carbon atom. In addtion to several new substitution reactions, a description is given of the syntheses and reactions of 6-amino- and 6-hydroxyfulvenes, isomeric with anilines and phenols, the derivatives of which can be used for the preparation of new types of nonbenzenoid cyclic conjugated systems such as carbocyclic and heterocyclic azulenes, pseudoazulenes, thiepines, dihydropyridazines, and s-indacene.

Die Erkenntnis, daß das Azulen ein inneres Fulven darstellt, gab zu Versuchen Anlaß, Metallalkyle bzw. -aryle auf das kondensierte 5-, 7-Ring-System einwirken zu lassen.

Es werden Darstellung und Eigenschaften einiger in 1- bzw. 6-Stellung halogenierter Azulene und deren Reaktionen mit nucleophilen Agenzien beschrieben. Durch die Polarisation des Azulens bedingt, erfolgen nucleophile Austauschreaktionen im 7-Ring leicht, im 5-Ring dagegen nur in geringem Mase.

Cycloadditions to the azulene system have not hitherto been observed. Instead, azulene reacts, e.g., with maleic anhydride via an "addition-substitution route" to give 1-azulenylsuccinic anhydride and with tetracyanoethylene to yield 1-tricy-anovinylazulene[¹].

To check the influence of substituents on the bonding of the 12π-perimeter of s-indacene, a tetraalkyl derivative, the title compound 1, was synthesized. 1, red needles, is weakly paratropic. Crystal structure analysis and NMR investigations indicate a delocalized or a localized π-electron system with only a small energy barrier between the π-bond isomers.

Nach der Synthese einfacher carbocyclischer Pentalene[¹] sind deren Aza-Analoga von besonderem Interesse, da ihre Eigenschaften in starkem Maße von der Stellung der Stickstoffatome abhängen dürften.

The preparation of alkyl 1-azepinecarboxylates (1) by photolysis or thermolysis of azidoformates in benzene or its derivatives has enabled us to study the monocyclic azepine system[²].

Die enantiomerenreinen Valenzisomere (+)-und(−)−1 sowie (+)- und (−)−2 konnten als erste ihrer Art isoliert werden. Diese Verbindungen mit nichtplanaren, cyclisch konjugierten π-Elektronensystem und lokalisierten π-Bindungen im Grundzustand stehen miteinander im dynamischen Gleichgewicht. Die kinetischen Daten der dynamischen Prozesse - Ringinversion und Doppelbindungsverschiebung -wurden ebenfalls bestimmt (R=H, Me).

In 4-Stellung funktionalisierte Azulene (1) sind über das Sulfoniumsalz (1), X=SMe₂+BF₄-, zugänglich geworden. Bei der Umlagerung dieses Salzes zu (3) läßt sich das Dihydro-Derivat (2) isolieren, dessen Entstehung im Zusammenhang mit der Sommelet-Umlagerung interessiert.

Alle bisher bekannt gewordenen Synthesen des Azulens (I) und seiner Homologen erfordern in der Endphase eine Dehydrierung unter mehr oder weniger gewaltsamen Bedingungen. Die Ausbeuten an Azulenen sind daher durchweg schlecht.

Whereas thermolysis of 6-(4-amino-1,3-butadienyl)fulvenes yields azulenes [¹], it is not unexpected that the corresponding reaction of 6-(2 aminovinyl)fulvenes (1) does not lead to the desired but presumably highly thermolabile pentalene (2) [²].

Synthesen des Pentalens und seiner Derivate erfordern mehrere Reaktionsschritte und oft die Isolierung wenig beständiger Zwischenstufen. In der Cycloaddition von elektronenarmen Acetylen-Derivaten an 6-Dimethylamino-fulvene (1) wurde jetzt eine bei 20°C als Eintopfreaktion durchführbare Synthese gefunden.

s-Indacenes reveal the limits of the Hückel rules: These 12π systems are formally antiaromatic, but the results of more recent quantum mechanical calculations indicate π-electron delocalization. The synthesis and spectroscopic investigation of the non-electronically stabilized 4-hetero-s-indacenes 1 and 2 have now been achieved for the first time.

NMR. data show that protonation of 1-formyl-azulene yields essentially a one-to-one mixture of conjugate acids in which the hydroxyl group assumes the syn-planar or anti-planar configuration relative to the tropylium nucleus. The presence of a minute amount of protonation in position 3 is demonstrated by the rapid hydrogendeuterium exchange in this position. Steric interference in 1-formyl-azulenes with a methyl group in the peri position 8 favours the anti-planar configuration. As shown by one example, the conjugate acids of 1-acetyl-azulenes without substituents in positions 2 or 8 assume the anti-planar configuration. In 1-acetyl-azulenes carrying a methyl group in position 8, addition of a proton to the carbon centre 1 is the preferred route of protonation, as a consequence of the accompanying strain release.

Die Frage nach dem Bindungszustand des Pentalens (1) regte in den letzten 50 Jahren[¹] zu zahlreichen experimentellen und theoretischen Studien an und war Gegenstand häufiger Kontroversen[²].

Cyclopenten-(2)-on-(1) gibt mit N-Bromsuccinimid 5-Brom-cyclopenten-(2)-on-(1) (I) (84 %, Kp₀,₈ 50-51 °C). Dieses spaltet in Ather in Gegenwart von Basen (besonders gut mit Dilthylamin) HBr ab unter Bildung von Cyclopentadienon (II), das sich sofort zum 1.8-Diketo-4.7-methano-3a.4.7.7a-tetrahydroinden (III) (76 %, Fp 103-104 °C, Kp₁₁ 146-148 °C) dimerisiert.

Es wird uber Substituenteneinflusse auf die Lichtabsorption des Cyclopentadienoheptalens (I) sowie uber dessen Reaktionen mit elektrophilen und nucleophilen Agenzien berichtet. In Ubereinstimmung mit MO- und LCAO-Berechnungen verhalt sich I wie ein Azulen mit in 1.8-Stellung angegliederter Dienbrucke, deren π-Elektronen an der Resonanz des bicyclischen 10π-Elektronensystems teilnehmen. Ausgehend von II konnte das aus drei 7-Ringen und einem 5-Ring aufgebaute tetracyclische System XXXIII gewonnen werden.

In ihrem Bindungszustand und ihrer Reaktivität nehmen die Fulvene eine Mittelstellung zwischen den ihnen isomeren benzoiden Verbindungen und den Olefinen ein. In Abhängigkeit von den Substituenten am exocyclischen C-Atom bestimmen der Diencharakter des gekreuzt konjugierten Systems oder die cyclische Konjugation im fünfgliedrigen Ring das chemische und physikalische Verhalten der Fulvene. Neben einigen neuen Substitutionsreaktionen werden besonders Synthesen und Reaktionen von den mit Anilinen und Phenolen isomeren 6-Amino- und 6-Hydroxy-fulvenen beschrieben. Derivate dieser Verbindungen ermöglichen die Darstellung neuartiger nichtbenzoider, cyclisch konjugierter Systeme wie carbo- und hetero-cyclischer Azulene, Pseudoazulene, Thiepine, Dihydropyridazine und des s-Indacens.

After the synthesis of simple carbocyclic pentalenes[¹] the aza analogs attract particular interest because their properties are likely to depend markedly on the position of the nitrogen atoms.

Neue Schlüsselverbindungen für einfache Synthesen ungesättigter Carbo- und Heterocyclen sind die Chlorformamidinium-chloride (2). Beispielsweise reagiert (2), R = X = H, n =; 1, mit NH3 zu (3)

Aus 1- bzw. 3-α-Hydroxy-, Alkoxy- oder Aminoalkyl-azulenen und komplexen Sauren erhalt man 1- bzw. 3-Alkyliden-azulenium-Salze X. Diese entstehen auch durch Kondensation von Azulenen mit aliphatischen und aromatischen Aldehyden oder Ketonen, deren Derivaten sowie mit Orthoestern in Gegenwart von atherischer Borfluorwasserstoffsaure. Die Anwendung der in ihren Eigenschaften den Tropylium-Salzen verwandten Azulenderivate als Alkylierungsmittel macht zahlreiche neue Azulene und von diesen sich ableitende Ringsysteme leicht zuganglich.

Es werden Darstellung und Eigenschaften einiger Dialkylaminomethyl-azulene und deren Derivate beschrieben.

The base-catalysed condensation of cyclopentadiene with formaldehyde or a homologue affords fulvene (4) or its 6-alkyl derivative (5) respectively, but only in yields of less than 5 % [1].

The first non-benzenoid, linearly annelated, tetracyclic system with [4n + 2]-perimeter and [4n]-partial structures was obtained by dimerization of the allene derivative 1 via [6 + 2]-cycloaddition. Subsequent 8π-electrocyclization yielded a tetraquinane, which could be dehydrogenated to the title compound 2.

The hitherto known syntheses of pentalene and its derivatives require several reaction steps and frequently the isolation of rather unstable intermediates[¹].

Dihydropentalenes are important as precursors for a synthesis of pentalene and its derivatives[¹].

1.3-Disubstituierte Azulene reagieren mit elektrophilen Agenzien unter Substitution in 5- und/oder 7- sowie in 2-Stellung. Dabei wird die Substitution von elektrophilen Verdrangungsreaktionen in 1- und/oder 3-Stellung begleitet.

Like acenaphthylene (1), the isomeric compound cyclopent- [cd]azulene (2) can also undergo 1,2-cycloadditions at the double bond of the five-membered ring.

Das erste peri-anellierte[4n]π-Elektronensystem ohne aromatische Teilstruktur ist Cyclohepta[ef]heptalen (Pleiaheptalen). Zu seinen jetzt synthetisierten Derivaten gehört 1, R = Me, das ausschließlich mit der angegebenen Doppelbindungsverteilung entsteht. In Lösung stellt sich ein Gleichgewicht mit einem π-Bindungsisomer ein.

Alkyl and aryl derivatives [¹] of cyclopent[cd]azulene (1) exhibit a notable reactivity in cycloaddition reactions with alkenes, alkynes, and carbenes[²].

Wahrend die Thermolyse von 6-(4-Amino-1,3-butadienyl)-fulvenen Azulene liefert [¹], führt die entsprechende Reaktion von 6-(2-Amino-vinyl)fulvenen ( I ) erwartungsgemäß nicht zum gewünschten, thermisch vermutlich sehr labilen Pentalen (2) [²].

Es wird eine neue Modifikation der Sandmeyerschen Reaktion beschrieben, die auf dem Ersatz der Diazogruppe durch die Sulfochloridgruppe beruht. Die Reaktion verläuft im allgemeinen nur in Gegenwart von Kupfer(I)-chlorid. Nur die stark negativ substituierten Diazoniumchloride, wie die Dinitrobenzoldiazoniumchloride, reagieren mit Schwefeldioxyd auch bei Abwesenheit eines Katalysators. Diazobenzol- und Diazonaphthalin-sulfonsäuren liefern auch in Gegenwart von Chlorionen an Stelle der Sulfochlorid-sulfonsäuren Disulfonsäuren. Analog verhält sich die Diazoarsanilsäure.

Alkylgruppen in 4-, 6- und 8-Stellung des Azulens reagieren am α-C-Atom mit geeigneten Metallüberträgern unter Metall-Wasserstoff-Austausch. Dabei entstehen 4- bzw. 8- oder 6-Alkyliden-azuleniat-Salze, die den Cyclopentadien-Metallverbindungen nahe verwandt sind. Ihre Umsetzung mit elektrophilen Agenzien führt zu neuartigen Azulenderivaten, die für Synthesen anderer quasiaromatischer Verbindungen von Interesse sind.

Wir berichteten über die Darstellung von 1- bzw. 3-Alkylidenazulenium- Salzen¹) durch Umsatz von 1- bzw. 3-α-Hydroxy-alkylazulenen mit einer 54-proz. Lösung von HBF₄ in Äther (aus BF₃- Ätherat und wasserfreier Flußsäure).

Cycloadditionsreaktionen des Azulens 1 mit elektronenarmen sowie mit elektronenreichen Alkinen bieten einen einfachen Zugang zu Derivaten des Heptalens 2[¹] und Cyclopentacyclononens 3[²]. Jüngst konnten wir auch die Transformation von 1 in das Pentalen-System 4 verwirklichen.

Materials with multiple superconducting phases are rare. Here, we report the discovery of two-phase unconventional superconductivity in CeRh2As2 Using thermodynamic probes, we establish that the superconducting critical field of its high-field phase is as high as 14 tesla, even though the transition temperature is only 0.26 kelvin. Furthermore, a transition between two different superconducting phases is observed in a c axis magnetic field. Local inversion-symmetry breaking at the cerium sites enables Rashba spin-orbit coupling alternating between the cerium sublayers. The staggered Rashba coupling introduces a layer degree of freedom to which the field-induced transition and high critical field seen in experiment are likely related. Postprint Postprint

Due to their well-defined plasmonic properties, gold nanorods (GNRs) can be fabricated with optimal light absorption in the near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, which make them suitable for cancer-related theranostic applications. However, their controversial safety profile, as a result of surfactant stabilization during synthesis, limits their clinical translation. We report a facile method to improve GNR biocompatibility through the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). GNRs (120 × 40 nm) were synthesized through a seed-mediated approach, using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a cationic surfactant to direct the growth of nanorods and stabilize the particles. Post-synthesis, SDS was used as an exchange ligand to modify the net surface charge of the particles from positive to negative while maintaining rod stability in an aqueous environment. GNR cytotoxic effects, as well as the mechanisms of their cellular uptake, were examined in two different cancer cell lines, Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) and HeLa cells. We not only found a significant dose-dependent effect of GNR treatment on cell viability but also a time-dependent effect of GNR surfactant charge on cytotoxicity over the two cell lines. Our results promote a better understanding of how we can mediate the undesired consequences of GNR synthesis byproducts when exposed to a living organism, which so far has limited GNR use in cancer theranostics.

Natural killer (NK) cells play key roles in immune surveillance against tumors and viral infection. NK cells distinguish abnormal cells from healthy cells by cell–cell interaction with cell surface proteins and then attack target cells via multiple mechanisms. In addition, extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from NK cells (NK-EVs), including exosomes, possess cytotoxic capacity against tumor cells, but their characteristics and regulation by cytokines remain unknown. Here, we report that EVs derived from human NK-92 cells stimulated with IL-15 + IL-21 show enhanced cytotoxic capacity against tumor cells. Major cytolytic granules, granzyme B and granzyme H, are enriched by IL-15 + IL-21 stimulation in NK-EVs; however, knockout experiments reveal those cytolytic granules are independent of enhanced cytotoxic capacity. To find out the key molecules, mass spectrometry analyses were performed with different cytokine conditions, no cytokine, IL-15, IL-21, or IL-15 + IL-21. We then found that CD226 (DNAM-1) on NK-EVs is enriched by IL-15 + IL-21 stimulation and that blocking antibodies against CD226 reduced the cytolytic activity of NK-EVs. We also show NK-EVs are taken up by target cells via macropinocytosis. Collectively, our findings elucidate the novel properties of NK-EVs and the mechanism of their incorporation into target cells.

In Illinois during the spring of 2018, over 160 documented cases of bleeding and prolonged coagulopathy occurred secondary to contaminated synthetic cannabinoids. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study consisting of 38 patients to describe the initial emergency department (ED) presentation, diagnosis, and treatment. Results: Through serum testing we found that three long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides (LAAR) were detected in patients who had inhaled these tainted products: brodifacoum, difenacoum, and bromodialone.n Discussion: This study encompasses the largest ED presentation of LAAR poisoning via the inhalational route known to date.nConclusion: The emergency physician should be aware of the potential for tainted coingestants as the cause of undifferentiated coagulopathy.
