Prototissues comprise free-standing 3D networks of interconnected protocell consortia that communicate and display synergistic functions. Significantly, they can be constructed from functional molecules and materials, providing unprecedented opportunities to design tissue-like architectures that can do more than simply mimic living tissues. They could function under extreme conditions and exhibit a wide range of mechanical properties and bio-inspired metabolic functions. In this perspective, I will start by describing recent advancements in the design and synthetic construction of prototissues. I will then discuss the next challenges and the future impact of this emerging research field, which is destined to find applications in the most diverse areas of science and technology, from biomedical science to environmental science, and soft robotics., (© 2020 The Author(s). The brain is our most complex organ. During development, neurons extend axons, which may grow over long distances along well-defined pathways to connect to distant targets. Our current understanding of axon pathfinding is largely based on chemical signaling by attractive and repulsive guidance cues. These cues instruct motile growth cones, the leading tips of growing axons, where to turn and where to stop. However, it is not chemical signals that cause motion-motion is driven by forces. Yet our current understanding of the mechanical regulation of axon growth is very limited. In this review, I discuss the origin of the cellular forces controlling axon growth and pathfinding, and how mechanical signals encountered by growing axons may be integrated with chemical signals. This mechanochemical cross talk is an important but often overlooked aspect of cell motility that has major implications for many physiological and pathological processes involving neuronal growth.

A simple method to produce record concentrations (up to 10 mg mL -1 ) of high-quality aqueous graphene suspensions by using an ordinary benchtop magnetic stirrer is reported. The shear rates employed here are almost 10 times less than those in previous reports, and graphene is efficiently separated from unexfoliated graphite during the synthesis. Systematic optimization of synthesis parameters, such as pH, protein concentration, temperature, stirrer speed, and volume of solution, afforded efficient conversion (100%) of graphite to graphene-aqueous suspensions. The synthesis is readily scaled-up with a continuous flow reactor where the graphene is produced and separated 24/7, with little or no human intervention. Raman spectroscopy confirmed little to no sp 3 or oxidative defects, and that the graphene nanosheets consisted of three to five layers. The graphene suspensions were coated on aluminum and tested for thermal conductivity applications. The thermal conductivity of our graphene sample was calculated to be 684 W m -1 K -1 , a value greater than that of a commercial sample. The activation energy measured for shear exfoliation by stirring was found to be over 45 billion times smaller than the corresponding thermal activation energy, affording physical insight into the process. We hypothesize that stirring selectively populates translational states that are necessary for exfoliation and thus requires far less energy than conventional exfoliation methods, where the energy is uniformly distributed among all available modes. Therefore, an efficient, convenient, and inexpensive method for graphene production in limited-resource settings is reported here.

Covering: 1877 to 2017The ancestors of present-day crinoids are thought to be some of the earliest echinoderms, with fossil records dating back to the early Paleozoic Era (Ordovician Period, 505-440 million years ago). Their bright colours have been noted for over 100 years, and are attributed to a series of polyketide-derived pigments. Some crinoid metabolites display a range of biological activities, including cytotoxicity and fish anti-feedant activity. This review is divided into two parts. Part 1 is encyclopedic in scope, collating information on the >50 known metabolites isolated from crinoids, including their taxonomic source, collection location, chemical structure and biological activities. During the compilation of this data, two distinct themes emerged. Firstly, there is little variation in the class of metabolites produced by crinoids, irrespective of their species or geographic origin. Secondly, the complete and unambiguous assignment of crinoid metabolite structures has been, in many cases, a difficult task. This has been due to a lack of spectroscopic technology available in the past, the presence of proton-poor chemical structures, or both. Thus, Part 2 provides a critical discussion of crinoid chemistry, including the biosynthetic origin of crinoid pigments, as well as the pitfalls and solutions experienced by ourselves and other chemists when elucidating the chemical structures of crinoid metabolites.

DNA-encoded chemical library technologies are increasingly being adopted in drug discovery for hit and lead generation. DNA-encoded chemistry enables the exploration of chemical spaces four to five orders of magnitude more deeply than is achievable by traditional high-throughput screening methods. Operation of this technology requires developing a range of capabilities including aqueous synthetic chemistry, building block acquisition, oligonucleotide conjugation, large-scale molecular biological transformations, selection methodologies, PCR, sequencing, sequence data analysis and the analysis of large chemistry spaces. This Review provides an overview of the development and applications of DNA-encoded chemistry, highlighting the challenges and future directions for the use of this technology.

Materials chemistry has been fundamental to the enormous field that encompasses the delivery of molecules both to desired sites and/or at desired rates and durations. The field encompasses the delivery of molecules including fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, food ingredients, fragrances and biopharmaceuticals. A personal perspective is provided on our early work in this field that has enabled the controlled release of ionic substances and macromolecules. Also discussed are new paradigms in creating biomaterials for human use, the non-invasive delivery of molecules through the skin and lungs, the development of intelligent delivery systems and extensions to nanomedicine. With the advent of potentially newer biopharmaceutics such as siRNA, mRNA and gene editing approaches and their use being limited by delivery, future research in this field may be more critical than ever before.

Manfred Eigen extended Erwin Schroedinger's concept of "life is physics and chemistry" through the introduction of information theory and cybernetic systems theory into "life is physics and chemistry and information." Based on this assumption, Eigen developed the concepts of quasispecies and hypercycles, which have been dominant in molecular biology and virology ever since. He insisted that the genetic code is not just used metaphorically: it represents a real natural language. However, the basics of scientific knowledge changed dramatically within the second half of the 20th century. Unfortunately, Eigen ignored the results of the philosophy of science discourse on essential features of natural languages and codes: a natural language or code emerges from populations of living agents that communicate. In this highly personal account of my career in science, I try to show how many others influenced its course. I was able to abandon work in pure chemistry and microbiology and to take up research in entomology only with the help of others. My faith in the value of collaborative, interdisciplinary work has been the key to success. Our focus on proteins of insect hemolymph has provided valuable insights into insect biochemistry and physiology.

The different stages leading to knowledge of the phenomenon of animal breathing are going from some writings in Corpus Hippocraticum to Aristoteles' and Galen's works, who considered the heart as the source of the animal heat. Later, Miguel Servet suggested that the inspired air can achieve other functions besides cooling the blood. After that, different explications of the animal heat were raised. About 1770, due to progress of knowledge in the chemistry field, first Mayow and later Black began to consider the animal respiration as a combustion. The important treatise Méthode de nomenclature chimique, published by Guyton de Morveau et al. in 1787 and soon after the Traité élémentaire de chimie de Lavoisier (1789) provided a solid support to Lavoisier's thought. This way on arrived to consider analogous the respiration and combustion phenomena. From the early 17th century the advent of physical and chemical sciences developed two important movements toward the explanation of all vital phenomena: the Iatrochemical and Iatromechanical Schools. The important research of their representatives such as Jan Baptist van Helmont, John Mayow, Robert Boyle, Gian Alfonso Borelli, Richard Lower, and Albrecht von Haller, followed by the discovery of the atmospheric gases, provided a fecund soil for the leading work of Lavoisier in respiratory physiology.

This paper summarizes my experience with teaching a first-year, General Chemistry course to a visually impaired student. This includes accommodations and modifications for both the lecture material and the laboratory. Included are also examples of formats and syntax for txt-based quizzes, tests, and laboratory reports, as well as other general accommodations for both the student and the service dog.

The academic setting provides an environment that may foster success in the discovery of certain types of small molecule tools while proving less suitable in others. For example, small molecule probes for poorly understood systems, those that exploit a specific resident expertise, and those whose commercial return is not apparent are ideally suited to be pursued in a university setting. In this review, we highlight five projects that emanated from academic research groups and generated valuable tool compounds that have been used to interrogate biological phenomena: reactive oxygen species (ROS) sensors, GPR30 agonists and antagonists, selective CB2 agonists, Hsp70 modulators, and β-amyloid PET imaging agents. By taking advantage of the unique expertise resident in university settings and the ability to pursue novel projects that may have great scientific value but with limited or no immediate commercial value, probes from academic research groups continue to provide useful tools and generate a long-term resource for biomedical researchers.

Recombinant adenovirus-associated virus (rAAV) vectors mediated gene delivery system has been widely used in the treatments of cancer or other genetic diseases. It is considered to be one of the most promising vector owing to its non-pathogenicicity, low immune response, potential to integrate site-specif-ically, persistent and stable gene expression. However, it was limited in clinical applications because it is easy to be neutralized in serum and non-selection to the target site. Chemical modifications of rAAV have been studied to overcome those problems. This article reviewed the progress of chemical modifications of rAAV by various compounds and different modification methods, and predicted what the researches needed to do in the future.

Chemistry research is an eloquent, yet extremely complex discipline consisting of a diverse range of topics. The complexity of every sub-discipline requires extensive focus, which can limit cross-talk between fields, thus leading to their isolation. In particular, natural product and material chemistries have experienced this trend, and it has led to an ever growing separation between them. Yet by looking at the fundamental aspect of the relationship between molecular design and the resulting properties, it is possible to remind chemists of their ability to bridge these research areas. It is intradisciplinary collaborations that can provide a path toward collectively addressing the many challenges of chemistry.

Academic screening centers across the world have endeavored to discover small molecules that can modulate biological systems. To increase the reach of functional-genomic and chemical screening programs, universities, research institutes, and governments have followed their industrial counterparts in adopting high-throughput paradigms. As academic screening efforts have steadily grown in scope and complexity, so have the ideas of what is possible with the union of technology and biology. This review addresses the recent conceptual and technological innovation that has been propelling academic screening into its own unique niche. In particular, high-content and whole-organism screening are changing how academics search for novel bioactive compounds. Importantly, we recognize examples of successful chemical probe development that have punctuated the changing technology landscape., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

The 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Brian K. Kobilka and Robert J. Lefkowitz for their studies of G-protein-coupled receptors.
