In this work undoped and Cu doped SnS film at 4% and 8% were deposited onto glass substrates by spray pyrolysis technique in order to investigate the effect of Cu doping on their physical properties. Surface investigations showed that Cu doping reduced the surface roughness of SnS films from 36.5 nm to 8.8 nm. XRD studies revealed that all films have recently solved large cubic phase of SnS (p-SnS) with a- lattice of 11.53 Å and Cu doping led to reduction in crystallite size from 229 Å to 198 Å. Additionally, all deposited films were found to be under compressive strain. Optical band gaps of SnS:Cu varied in the range of 1.83 eV-1.90 eV. Hall-effect measurements exhibited that all film have p-type conductivity with low hole concentration (~10 11 -10 12 cm -3 ) and high electrical resistivity (~10 4 -10 5 Ωcm).

In this study, we proposed Cu-doped TiO2, prepared by the alkaline and heat treatment of titanium (Ti) metal, for use in dental applications because of its bone-bonding and antibacterial properties generated by the release of Cu ions and visible-light-responsive photocatalysis. We successfully prepared Cu-doped TiO2 on a Ti chip surface with a Cu content of 7 at.%. The apatite-forming ability of the Cu-doped TiO2 was evaluated using a simulated body fluid and it was found that apatite formation occurred. Hence, we concluded that Cu-doped TiO2 exhibits bone-bonding properties. The antibacterial properties of Cu-doped TiO2 for Escherichia coli were higher than those of non-doped TiO2 under visible light irradiation. The enhanced antibacterial effect was mainly caused by the visible-light-responsive photocatalysis of Cu-doped TiO2. We confirmed that the reactive oxygen species generated by the visible-light-responsive photocatalysis of Cu-doped TiO2 were hydroxyl radicals formed by the reaction of hydroxide ions (OH−) and holes (h+). Our findings are useful for the development of novel bioactive TiO2-based coatings and bulk materials with antibacterial properties by Cu doping.

The antibacterial activities of the coatings were then evaluated by the plate counting method using Escherichia coli as the indicator. The Cu concentrations on the surfaces of samples are increased from 6.90 to 15.05 mass% as initial electrolyte temperature is increased from 35 to 55°C. The Cu-doped ACP coatings show that they can fully inhibit the growth of E. coli.

The results of a study of the wear resistance of coatings based on cuprides of titaniumin the temperature range of 20-600 С are presented. It is shown that the wear resistance of nickel-doped coatings exceeds the wear resistance of binary coatings. With an increase in the Ni content of more than 10 %, their resistance to wear increases slightly.

The adsorption properties of formaldehyde on the Cr and Cu doped ZnO surface were investigated by using the density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that the binding capacity of the ZnO sensor material to formaldehyde was improved by doping with Cr atoms. Meanwhile, doping Cu atoms showed no obvious enhancement on the formaldehyde binding capacity. The binding distance of formaldehyde to the Cr and Cu-doped ZnO was calculated to be 1.937 and 2.031 A, respectively, with the binding energy of 0.775 and 0.376 eV. After doping, the width of the conduction band increased and impurity levels appeared. The adsorption process of formaldehyde on the Cr and Cu doped ZnO surface belongs to physical adsorption. It is expected that the calculated results reported in the present study can provide worthwhile references for the theoretical investigations and future design of ZnO material for enhancing its performance by doping with different elements.

Cu-doped TiO2 having a brookite phase and showing enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity was synthesized using a mild solvothermal method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Photocatalytic activity of Cu-doped brookite TiO2 nanoparticles was evaluated by photodegradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the crystallite size of Cu-doped brookite TiO2 samples decreased with the increase of Cu concentration in the samples. The UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy analysis of the Cu-doped TiO2 samples showed a shift to lower energy levels in the band gap compared with that of bare phase brookite TiO2. Cu doped brookite TiO2 can obviously improve its visible light photocatalytic activity because of Cu ions acting as electron acceptors and inhibiting electron-hole recombination. The brookite TiO2 sample with 7.0 wt.% Cu showed the highest photocatalytic activity and the corresponding degradation rate of MB (10 mg/L) reached to 87 % after visible light illumination for 120 min, much higher than that of bare brookite TiO2 prepared under the same conditions (78 %).

Cu-doped Mn3O4 and Mn-doped CuO (CMO@MCO) mixed oxides with isolated phases together with pristine Mn3O4 (MO) and CuO (CO) have been synthesized by a simple solution process for applications in electrochemical supercapacitors. The crystallographic, spectroscopic, and morphological analyses revealed the formation of all of the materials with good crystallinity and purity with the creation of rhombohedral-shaped MO and CMO and a mixture of spherical and rod-shaped CO and MCO nanostructures. The ratio of CMO and MCO in the optimized CMO@MCO was 2:1 with the Cu and Mn dopants percentages of 12 and 15%, respectively. The MO-, CO-, and CMO@MCO-modified carbon cloth (CC) electrodes delivered the specific capacitance (Cs) values of 541.1, 706.7, and 997.2 F/g at 5 mV/s and 413.4, 480.5, and 561.1 F/g at 1.3 A/g, respectively. This enhanced Cs value of CMO@MCO with an energy density and a power density of 78.0 Wh/kg and 650.0 W/kg, respectively, could be attributed to the improvement of electrical conductivity induced by the dopants and the high percentage of oxygen vacancies. This corroborated to a decrease in the optical band gap and charge-transfer resistance (Rct) of CMO@MCO at the electrode/electrolyte interface compared to those of MO and CO. The net enhancement of the Faradaic contribution induced by the redox reaction of the dopant and improved surface area was also responsible for the better electrochemical performance of CMO@MCO. The CMO@MCO/CC electrode showed high electrochemical stability with a Cs loss of only ca. 4.7%. This research could open up new possibilities for the development of doped mixed oxides for high-performance supercapacitors.

In the current study, pure Bi2S3 and Cu-doped Bi2S3 nanocomposite catalysts with different Cu concentrations (0.33, 1, and 3%) were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and photocatalytic degradation experiments of methylene blue were carried out in the presence of these catalysts for the first time. The samples were labeled as Bi2S3, Cu(0.33%):Bi2S3, Cu(1%):Bi2S3 and Cu(3%):Bi2S3, respectively. Cu(0.33%):Bi2S3 nanocomposite catalyst was found to have higher photocatalytic degradation efficiency compared to other catalysts. Moreover, the crystalline size and bandgap value of pure Bi2S3 and Cu(0.33%):Bi2S3 nanocomposite catalysts were determined by X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV–Vis) measurements, respectively. Consequently, it was observed for the first time in this study that the Cu-doped metal effectively affects the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Bi2S3 nanocomposite catalyst.

Effect of thickness on structural, optical and morphological properties of 2% copper (Cu) doped zinc selenide (ZnSe) thin films, grown onto chemically and ultrasonically cleaned glass substrate by thermal evaporation method in high vacuum (~10-6 Torr) were studied. Films of 100, 200, 300 and 400 nm thickness were prepared at 200℃ substrate temperature where annealing temperature and annealing time was fixed at 100℃ and 1 hour respectively. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) exhibited polycrystalline nature indicating the zinc-blende structure with a preferential orientation along the (111) plane of cubic phase. The grain size was found to be 19.27 nm. Dislocation density and microstrain were also found as 2.691 × 10-3 nm-2 and 1.85 × 10-3 respectively. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) study confirmed the growth of grains and their distribution over the entire surface of the films. All the films were characterized optically by UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer in the photon wavelength ranging from 300 to 1000 nm. The optical transmittance and reflectance were utilized to compute the absorption coefficient, extinction coefficient and band gap energy of the films. The calculated band gap energy was found to increase (2.99 to 3.94 ev) with varying thickness. The maximum transmittance was found to be 87.65% for the 400 nm film. A series of doped rather than supported 3DOM Ce0.7Fe0.2M0.1O2 and bulk Ce0.7Fe0.2Cu0.1O2 catalysts were prepared for the CO-SCR reaction. The formation of the 3DOM structure not only improves the reduction performance and surface-active sites but also promotes the generation of more surface-adsorbed oxygen species. Thus, the 3DOM Ce0.7Fe0.2Cu0.1O2 catalyst shows high CO-SCR activity in the broad operating temperature window of 150–700 °C, with T50 at 150 °C and T100 at 350 °C. It also has the highest CO oxidation activity in a series of samples. Moreover, the appearance of Cu+–CO species and the fast transition between Ce4+ and Ce3+ (Cu2+ + Ce3+ ↔ Cu+ + Ce4+) are the reasons why 3DOM Ce0.7Fe0.2Cu0.1O2 has better catalytic activity than other catalysts at lower temperature. Simultaneously, the oxygen vacancies produced by the reduction of Fe3+ → Fe2+ and those adjacent to Ce3+ are more significant at higher temperatures, and are favorable for the dissociation of NO. The cause of partial deactivation of the optimal catalyst under specific reaction conditions is also discovered, which further confirms the importance of Cu+ and number of active sites. Further, the CO-SCR reaction on 3DOM Ce0.7Fe0.2Cu0.1O2 follows the mechanism of L–H and E–R at low and high temperatures, respectively.

Development of metal-doped carbon dots (CDs) to effectively modulate their electronic properties and surface chemical reactivities is still in its early stage. In this paper, a facile solid-phase synthesis strategy was developed to synthesize Cu-doped CDs (Cu-CDs) using citric acid as the carbon source and Cu(NO3)2·3H2O as the dopant, respectively. The as-prepared Cu-CDs exhibited superior peroxidase-like activity to horseradish peroxidase and were stable under a wide range of pH and temperatures. Consequently, the Cu-CD-based chemiluminescence sensing was applied to sensitively detect glucose with a low detection limit of 0.32 μM, and the recoveries and the relative standard deviation of the serum sample are 87.2–112.2 and 8.16% (n = 6), respectively. Notably, the proposed chemiluminescence sensing was also successfully applied for label-free detection of glucose in complex biological samples, which envisioned its potential applications in clinical diagnosis and other analytical assays.

The current studies presented the green synthesis of zinc oxide and copper doped ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) using different ratios of Neem leaf extract and its antibacterial application on drug-resistant bacteria. The synthesized NPs were characterized using: X-ray diffractions (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), UV–visible spectroscopy and a simultaneous DTA-TGA thermal analyzer. All the synthesized materials were stable above 400°C. The powder diffraction studies indicated the formation of phase pure materials with wurtzite structure for pure ZnO and 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% Cu doped ZnO with the crystallite size in the range of 16.07 – 23.74 nm. SEM analysis revealed the formation of spherical shaped NPs with large grain size for 10% (v/v) ratio of aqueous leave extract. The aqueous extract of neem act as capping agent and prevent the NPs from agglomeration. The spectral studies confirmed the formation of NPs with the absorbance peak that is different from the micro-size ZnO. The antibacterial activities of the synthesized materials ZnO (1:1) against Staphylococcus aureus and uncalcined ZnO (7:3) and (Zn0.985Cu0.015O) against Bacillus subtilis were enhanced when referenced to the standard gentamicin.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst is one of the promising semiconductors used for the degradation of commercial dyes. However, it has to be doped with other metals to increase its efficiency, reactivity and stability. This study was carried out to synthesize hybrid Cu-doped TiO2 using wet impregnation method by varying the loading of copper precursor (0.3-1.0 wt%), incubation temperature (50-90°C) and incubation time (1-24 h). The synthesized hybrid Cu-doped TiO2 was characterized using XRD, EDX, FESEM and BET to obtain the structural, elemental, and surface morphological information. The photocatalytic activities of the synthesized Cu-doped TiO2 were investigated for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV-light irradiation. The results revealed that the optimum Cu loading was at 0.5wt% Cu with incubation temperature of 50°C and 2h incubation time. The hybrid Cu-doped TiO2 showed an excellent dye degradation efficiency ranging from 40-82% under UV-light irradiation.

The effluents from the textile, paper and food industries contain organic dyes that are strongly colored and reveal harmful effect on living systems. In order to reduce water pollution, the degradation of dye into non toxic form is desirable. Methylene blue is one such organic dye, discharged from textile industries. In this work, the catalytic degradation of methylene blue was investigated using a montmorillonite supported trimetallic catalyst, prepared by supporting Pd on a Cu-doped Ti pillared montmorillonite. The catalyst exhibited excellent performance to reduce methylene blue, in the presence of NaBH4. The decolorization was appreciable and the results indicated that methylene blue could be successfully decolorized and degraded using the catalyst under room conditions. Almost complete degradation was achieved within 20 min. The results obtained were better than those reported for other catalysts. © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Perovskite oxide Sr2Fe1.3Cu0.2Mo0.5O6−δ (SFCM) is prepared and evaluated as a novel cathode material for solid oxide electrolytic cells (SOECs). At 750 °C, the interfacial polarization resistance value decreased from 1.834 to 1.125 Ω cm2 and the SFCM cathode exhibited excellent stability for 100 h, without any significant attenuation, at an electrolytic voltage of 1.5 V.

Cu-doped Cr2O3 thin films were deposited onto glass substrate by the sol–gel dip-coating (SGDC) process using dopant values of 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12%. The Chromium (III) Nitrate Nonahydrate [Cr(NO3)3·9H2O] was used as a Cr source, whilst for the dopant, the corresponding nitrate (Cu(NO3)2) was used. The crystal structure, as well as the optical and electrical properties were examined. XRD data showed that the films with a high degree of crystallinity were rhombohedral Cr2O3 phase. The crystallite size reduces with increase in Cu doping proportion. The AFM results indicate a decrease in the surface roughness of the doped Cr2O3: Cu thin films. The UV-Vis spectra of the Cu doped-Cr2O3 films showed high transparency in the visible region. The optical band gap of Cr2O3 thin films decreases with increasing in Cu doping rate. The Nyquist plot shows that the equivalent circuit of Cu doped-Cr2O3 films is a parallel circuit R p C p . As the concentration of Cu increases, Resistance R P regresses while capacitance C p increases.

Facile synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) structured BiOCl is quite a challenge and a proven practicable solution to achieve superior photocatalytic property. One-pot synthesis of BiOCl single-crystal nanosheets with exposed {001} facets was achieved using a Cu-containing organic solvent. The Cu 2+ ion or Cu 2 O played an important role in controlling the shape and size of BiOCl nanosheets. Furthermore, EDX element mapping confirmed the presence of Cu-doping of the as-prepared BiOCl nanosheets.

Different content of Cu has been loaded onto CoFe2O4 support, and their gas-phase CO oxidation performance has been tested to explore the best Cu loading content and the mechanism of catalyst oxidation. The fundamental characteristics of Cu doped CoFe2O4 are revealed by XRD and TEM. The catalytic mechanism is elucidated by XPS, H2-TPR, CO-TPD and in-situ DRIFTS. The CO oxidation performance is greatly improved upon Cu doping on the surface of CoFe2O4 catalysts. It is found that 5 wt% Cu/CoFe2O4 catalysts showed higher CO oxidation performance.

Intensity- and concentration-dependent nonlinear absorption of Cu-doped ( $$\gamma $$ and $$\beta )$$ - $$\hbox {BaB}_{2}\hbox {O}_{4}$$ nanostructures was measured by a standard open aperture Z-scan setup under nanopulsed (9 ns, 10 Hz) laser excitation (532 nm) at various peak intensities (1.26–2.52 GW/ $$\hbox {cm}^{2})$$ . Intensity-dependent 2PA coefficient exposes the involvement of accumulative 2PA process rather than genuine 2PA. From ground state absorption studies, existence of new energy states due to Cu incorporation has availed a near-resonant state favoring excited state absorption leading to sequential 2PA. Among the samples, 0.05 M Cu-doped $$\gamma $$ - $$\hbox {BaB}_{2}$$ $$\hbox {O}_{4}$$ $$(2.6\times 10^{-10}$$ m/W, $$0.78\times 10^{12}$$ $$\hbox {W}/\hbox {m}^{2})$$ and 0.03 M Cu-doped $$\beta $$ - $$\hbox {BaB}_{2} \hbox {O}_{4}$$ $$(2.5\times 10^{-10}$$ m/W, $$1.21\times 10^{12}\hbox {W}/\hbox {m}^{2})$$ exhibit higher 2PA coefficient and lower onset limiting threshold. The presence of CT and intragap states of $$\hbox {Cu}^{2+}$$ ions-induced strain in visible region transformed genuine 2PA in pristine ( $$\gamma $$ and $$\beta )$$ - $$\hbox {BaB}_{2}$$ $$\hbox {O}_{4}$$ nanorods into sequential 2PA (1PA $$+$$ 2PA) in Cu-doped ( $$\gamma $$ and $$\beta )$$ - $$\hbox {BaB}_{2}$$ $$\hbox {O}_{4}$$ . By simple hydrothermal process, concentration-dependent Cu-doped ( $$\gamma $$ and $$\beta )$$ - $$\hbox {BaB}_{2}$$ $$\hbox {O}_{4}$$ nanostructures were prepared and their structural and optical properties were studied. Platinum catalysts are widely employed for vehicle exhaust treatment, but their activity is poor when the catalyst is cold. Now, precise control of the interfacial structure of platinum sub-nanoclusters on copper-doped ceria delivers excellent activity at low temperatures.

In the present study, the catalytic activity of copper-loaded cobalt-based metal–organic framework (ZIF-67) composites was studied for their electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The Cu-ZIF-67 composite was prepared by the solvothermal method. After pyrolysis under argon atmosphere at 700 °C, the composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The electrochemical activity of the composites was tested for ORR in 0.1 M alkaline media using the three-electrode system by cyclic voltammetry (CV), Tafel plots, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The composites showed variable activity with a current density of 1.32 mA cm−2 at 0.71 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) onset potential for 70 wt% Cu-ZIF-67, 7.5 mA cm−2 at 0.82 V (versus RHE) onset potential for 50 wt% Cu-ZIF-67, and 11.85 mA cm−2 at 0.85 V (versus RHE) for 30% Cu-ZIF-67. The increasing ratio of the ZIF-67 effect can be attributed to the increased activity of ZIF-67 with the synergistic effect of Cu toward increased current density.

The properties of ZnO based materials for ethanol detection have been studied. Cu doped samples obtained from different precursors have been investigated. ZnO and ZnS have been used as host and Cu and CuO as dopant sources. The sensing measurements have been mostly performed at room temperature. To monitor the effect of the presence of gas, resistivity and photoluminescence experiments with and without sensing gas have been carried out. The sensing behaviour is affected by the nature of the precursors used. For ZnO:Cu and ZnO:CuO series, a higher sensitivity is obtained at the lower gas concentrations, the better response is obtained for the sample ZnO:Cu with wt.1% of metallic copper. Strong segregation effects observed in these samples could be deleterious for the sensing properties. In the series ZnS:CuO, no segregation is observed, however the sensing behaviour is erratic and attributed to the reduction of Cu ions to the metallic state.

Bismuth telluride-based alloys are the best-known thermoelectric materials in the room-temperature regime. Here, we report on the enhanced thermoelectric properties of electrodeposited copper-doped tellurium films as an n-type thermoelectric material for near-room-temperature applications. With the increase of the copper content in the films, we observe an enhancement of the thermoelectric properties. Thereby, we investigate the role of copper in modifying the crystal structure, which leads to the amorphous nature of the films and the corresponding enhancement in the thermoelectric properties. The electrodeposited copper-doped tellurium films exhibit a high Seebeck coefficient of -227 mu V/K, resulting to a power factor of 5.6 mW/mK(2) , which is a promising power factor observed for the electrodeposited thermoelectric materials and can be a favorable n-type thermoelectric material for device applications.

Trichloroethylene (TCE), a frequently used chlorinated solvent has been completely degraded in aqueous solution over the as-synthesised Cu-TiO2 irradiated with UV light. The effect of pH and the role played by specific generated reactive oxygen species in the mineralisation process were evaluated. Cu-TiO2 was synthesised and characterised according to our previous study. The photodegradation results, which followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, revealed that pH had a negligible effect on the degradation as the complete dechlorination occurred in all adjusted pH solutions. In addition, probe compound tests using nitrobenzene and tetrachloromethane suggested that the hydroxyl radical (•OH) is mainly generated when coupling UV with Cu-TiO2, and the superoxide radical anion (O2•−) is highly generated when UV is applied alone. Free radical quenching studies demonstrated that O2•− is the major radical responsible for the degradation of TCE compared to •OH. The results obtained in the present study can serve as a support for further studies on the removal of TCE using UV coupling catalyst.
